Trevor Bayne wins in a wild weekend in Iowa!

Trevor Bayne won the 3rd Annual DuPont Pioneer 250 for his first win of the season. He won on Sunday afternoon after the race got postponed Saturday night due to rain and with 86 laps to go, delayed for rain once again. Austin Dillon, who led 204 of 250 laps, finished 2nd followed by Elliott Sadler, Sam Hornish Jr and Kyle Larson rounded out the top 5.

After getting postponed until Sunday morning,  it was Dillon once again leading the field to the green under cloudy conditions. Hornish Jr led the first lap and led until the caution came out. The first caution came out due to Brad Sweet and Kevin Swindell getting together after getting bumped from Cole Whitt on lap 3.

There was a long green flag run through lap 50 but it went back to yellow as Brian Vickers got together with Bayne. Bayne was getting held up with a lap car and Vickers went three wide and Vickers got turned around.

At 100 laps in, It was all Dillon. He had a pretty good lead on Hornish Jr, Scott and others and were just cruising along.

The third caution waved for debris and all of the leaders went in for pit stops. They went back to green and a huge wreck occurred! No. 99 of Alex Bowman got loose and spun No. 20 of Vickers and No. 60 of Travis Pastrana was there and just got hit. Pastrana then went down the track and got clobbered by the No. 33 of Max Papis. Pastrana got out and was okay while Vickers went to the garage and Bowman and Papis drove their cars to pit road. Pastrana will be done for the day as the 3 other cars have a ton of work to do.

All of a sudden, a MASSIVE downpour just hit the speedway and soaked the race track and all of the cars were heading down pit road. As of 12:31 ET, covers have been put on the cars and people have been advised to take shelter.

12:37 ET: Sun is out and jet driers are now on the track.

1:36 ET Driver have refired their engines.

After a 1 hour and 9 minute rain delay, we went back to green in Iowa! Dillon did not seem concerned as he continued to lead and pull away from Bayne and the others, he is looking for his 3rd career win. The green did not last for long as the No. 43 of Michael Annett spun off of turn 2 and barley touched the inside wall. None of the front leaders came to pit but Drew Herring, who is in the #54 ride, came in. Herring is driving for KBM due to Busch driving in Pocono right now.  Annett spun again trying to catch up to the field due to blowing his left rear tire.

With about 20 to go Dillon caught lap traffic and Bayne got caught up to him. When they cleared, Bayne got side by side and bumped him a little bit. Dillon did the same  and finally passed Dillon with 11 to go.

  • For Joey Logano, Monster Mile Nationwide Win Feels Like the First Time

For Joey Logano, Monster Mile Nationwide Win Feels Like the First Time

While Joey Logano’s victory in the Nationwide race at Dover was his third straight Dover win, the driver of the No. 22 Hertz Ford for Penske Racing was fixated on firsts instead.

“There were a lot of firsts for me today,” Logano said in the media center after the race. “Winning for Hertz, winning for the No. 22 Nationwide team, and winning for Ford were all firsts.”

“And finally and most importantly, winning for Roger (Penske, team owner) was a first,” Logano continued. “That’s the coolest part of this win.”

“There is a huge list of great race car drivers that have won for Roger Penske,” Logano said. “It’s cool to have my name put on that list too.”

In spite of battling Cup drivers Kyle Busch and Kasey Kahne, both of whom had cars good enough to contend for the win, Logano was confident that he had  Miles the Monster under his control.

“This is one of those race tracks that I feel like I know what it takes to win and what I need in a race car,” Logano said. “I was able to get Jeremy (Bullins, crew chief) the feedback he needed to give that car to me.”

Logano admitted that he didn’t quite have that confidence, however, the night before the race.

“Last night, I felt like we still weren’t there,” Logano said. “We had decent speed in our car but I felt like we were a second place car and not quite good enough to win.”

“Jeremy and all the 22 team did a great job changing about everything on it,” Logano continued. “They got the car a little bit better.”

In the end, the race was won in the pits by a gutsy call from the crew chief according to Logano.

“Really the winning call was on that last pit stop,” Logano said. “Jeremy made an audible and decided to do two tires to beat out a lot of those guys.”

“To give us that track position was the biggest thing.”

Crew chief Jeremy Bullins could not agree more with his driver and race winner.

“Obviously he’s really good here to win three in a row at any track,” Bullins said. “He obviously knows how to get around here.”

“And he’s right,” Bullins continued. “We changed just about everything.”

“I thought we were better today but wasn’t sure if we were good enough to win,” Bullins said. “We went back and forth in track position.”

“In the end we were racing the 5 and the 54, who had been up front all day,” Bullins continued. “As soon as we saw they were taking four, we called it off and took two.”

“The guys did a good job.”

Logano may have had another first in mind, that of beating that 54 car, driven by fellow Cup competitor Kyle Busch.

“It feels good, especially since this year he (Kyle Busch) has been winning everything,” Logano said. “To finally beat that 54 car, that was the team I worked with for the last seven years or so since my Nationwide debut really felt good.”

“To beat them means a lot to me after they have been winning so much this year,” Logano continued. “I wanted to beat them really bad and to get here in Victory Lane, you have to beat everyone.”

“They had a strong car again today but my man Jeremy made the right call for us.”

The victory was also Logano’s 19th in 114 NASCAR Nationwide Series races and his fourth top-10 finish for the season.

Following closely behind Logano was Brian Vickers in the No. 20 Dollar General Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. Vickers finished second and had the best finish of his season to date.

“The guys did a good job,” Vickers said. “But we just needed a little bit more right, one spot more right.”

“Obviously we wanted to get a win and get this Dollar General in Victory Lane,” Vickers continued. “But we were able to give $1.63 million dollars to Autism Speaks from the customers and Dollar General.”

“It’s phenomenal for them,” Vickers said. “And to show their generosity for a top-10 finish today, all Dollar General customers get 10 percent off on Monday.”

Vickers also credited his crew chief with gutsy calls on the pit box, just as Logano had done with his crew chief.

“That was a great call on Kevin’s (Kidd, crew chief) part,” Vickers said. “It was a last minute call and it was one thousand percent the right call to keep track position.”

“We were close to even with Logano there at the end of the race,” Vickers continued. “He was probably a little better on the short run and we were a little bit better on the long run.”

Vickers admitted that he was “pleased but not satisfied” with his runner up status.

“On one hand, I’m very excited – it was a great points day for the Dollar General team,” Vickers said. “But on the other hand – we wanted to win.”

    “We were so close.”

This was Vickers fifth top-10 finish in six races at the Monster Mile. It was his sixth top-10 finish of the season.

Another Cup regular, Matt Kenseth, rounded out the top three in the 32nd annual 5-Hour Energy 200. Kenseth posted his 11th top-10 finish in 19 races at Dover International Speedway.

“We had a decent GameStop Toyota and made it better there at the end,” Kenseth said. “Got two tires and was able to make up some ground.”

“I stalled it one time coming out of the pits and so we got ourselves behind,” Kenseth continued. “So, it was just hard to come back from that.”

Even though he was disappointed, Kenseth did have some fun at the Monster Mile.

“It was fun to go out and get 200 laps,” Kenseth said. “We were ten laps away from getting a win.”

    “So that was fun.”

Trevor Bayne also had a decent day behind the wheel of the No. 6 Ford Ecoboost Mustang, finishing fourth. And he too accomplished that top-5 finish with a gutsy call in the pits.

“Yeah, that two-tire stop got us in the game there,” Bayne said. “We needed that to get some track position.”

“I was really proud of these guys and the car that they gave me,” Bayne continued. “We have had some bad runs but now we got a couple good ones in a row and we need to keep it going.”

“Top-fives are what we gotta knock out every weekend and eventually that will lead to Victory Lane.”

Kyle Busch, who had been so strong in his No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing for much of the race, did pull off a fifth place finish. Unfortunately for him, pit strategy did not play to his favor, ruining a possible Dover sweep.

“It was a great race car,” Busch said simply. “Just real unfortunate that I messed up pit strategy there, you know.”

“Got us too far back,” Busch continued. “I tried to make some big moves there and a couple of them worked.”

“But a couple of them didn’t,” Busch said. “It is what it is.”

Kyle Larson, driver of the No. 32 Vizio/Hulu Chevrolet, was the top finishing rookie, scoring the tenth spot.

“We started out the first half of the race good through one and two,” Larson said. “We were really good there at the end but we lost a spot or two on every pit stop.”

“Track position was key today,” Larson continued. “Three top-10s in a row is great and I’m looking forward to Iowa.”

  • Busch Makes History in History 300

Busch Makes History in History 300

CONCORD, NC – If you were at Charlotte Motor Speedway this morning, you would have been tempted to check the calendar. Saturday morning started out feeling more like it should be October, than May, with local temperatures breaking all-time lows overnight.

However, Kyle Busch made sure that the day ended hot. Busch smoked the field in the 32nd History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway to earn his 57th career Nationwide Series race – the most of any driver. Busch’s Monster Energy Toyota led 186 of the 200 laps and moved him ahead of Mark Martin as the all-time winningest driver at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Busch was really never challenged throughout the race.  A series of late caution flags was the biggest challenge he had to overcome, each time, holding off race runner-up Kasey Kahne. It appeared that Kahne’s Great Clips Chevrolet got stronger as the race went on and appeared to be the only one had anything for Busch at the end. Sprint Cup regulars, Joey Logano and Kevin Harvick were third and fifth respectively.

Rookie Kyle Larson continued to show signs of his potential greatness, finishing third. Trevor Bayne was sixth, Justin Allgaier was seventh, Matt Kenseth, Parker Kligerman and points leader Regan Smith rounded out the top ten.

Allgaier was the only driver in the top five of points who was able to cut into Smith’s lead today. Smith increased his points lead over Sam Hornish Jr by one point and will head to Dover with a 29 point lead. Hornish finished twelfth. Elliot Sadler was 13th and Brian Vickers was eleventh and remains in fifth in points, 49 behind Smith.

  • Busch wins the History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Busch wins the History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway

Kyle Busch won the 32nd Annual History 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This is his sixth victory and eighth top-10 finish in 2013. Kasey Kahne, Joey Logano, Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top-5.

Austin Dillon led the field to green for the first time this year but did not last long as Busch took over the lead and drove away like he has been doing for the past 3-4 races this season.

First caution waved when there was debris spotted in turn 3. Everybody came in but Busch got out in front and will lead them to the green.

Green flag waved but did not last long as the caution waved again when the No.23 of Robert Richardson Jr spun and hit the wall and collected Johanna Long in the process. Both of them went to the garage. Nobody pitted due to coming in during the last stop.

The third yellow waved when the No.25 of John Wes Townley was trying to find grip and he found the wall instead. Busch had a huge lead and lapped all but 25 cars. He has led 80 of the 88 laps before this caution. Everybody came in and got four tires but Vickers took over the top sport and beat his JGR (Joe Gibbs Racing) teammate out of pit road.

Green flag pit stops starting to occur on lap 146 with Sam Hornish Jr coming in. He came in for four tires and was out. Trevor Bayne, Justin Allgaier, Parker Killgerman, Vickers and others came in as well and got their stops completed. Juan Carlos Blum and Allgaier will have a pass-through penalties due to being too fast entering. Busch went in for his stop and came out with the lead as they had a solid stop with no hiccups.

Right after the pit stops, Kyle Busch 3.8 second lead was gone. Debris was the cause to Vickers gave up 4th position to come in.

We went back to green with 43 to go and wow! Larson found something with his car and drove all the way up to 3rd with 39 to go and set his sights on the 54.

A nasty wreck including the #60 of Travis Pastrana  and No.87 of Joe Nemechek as well as the No.25 of Townley. Pastrana hit the inside wall really hard and came out the track and almost got away but Nemechek hit the back of Pastrana’s car. Busch and six others cars did not pit but Busch was the only one of the leaders that stayed out.

Green waved and it was wild! three wide in the middle of the pack and a very nice save from Hornish Jr and Michael Annett. Couple laps later, the caution waved for the 40 car of Reed Sorenson. Sorenson told his crew, on his radio, that the motor blew up before he spun.

They tried to go back to green but it did not last as the No.21 of Dakota Armstrong spun off the backstretch while going three wild. He was okay but was visibly upset.

Regan Smith leads the point standings by 29 points over Sam Hornish Jr.

  • Busch Dominates at Darlington Claiming his Fifth Win of the Season

Busch Dominates at Darlington Claiming his Fifth Win of the Season

Kyle Busch won the 31st annual VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 in dominant fashion. It was his fifth win out of 9 races run this season in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS). He started on the pole and led 107 of the 147 laps. There have been 13 NNS races won from the pole at Darlington Raceway. Busch was the last driver to do so in May 2011.

This was Busch’s 56th victory in 252 NNS races and his 112th win across the Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck series combined.

After the final caution of the evening, Logano led the field to green with Austin Dillon in second and Busch in third. Busch quickly passed Dillon and on lap 129 sailed past Logano to take the lead.

“It starts with having a really good race car,” Busch said. “We unloaded really well and were fast off the truck.”

All the Joe Gibbs Racing entries were strong, placing in four of the top five spots. Elliott Sadler finished second, earning his fourth top-10 finish in 10 races at Darlington Raceway and his fifth top-10 finish this season.

Brian Vickers, Joey Logano and Matt Kenseth rounded out the top five in the finishing order. It was the fifth top-10 finish in nine races at Darlington Raceway for Vickers. Kenseth led the second most laps with 27 and Logano led the third most with 8.

The top finishing rookie of the race was Kyle Larson. The sixth place finish brings his total of top-10s this season to four.

Regan Smith, who finished seventh, is the points leader by 28 points over Sam Hornish Jr. Sadler, in third place, trails the leader by 42 points. Justin Allgaier and Vickers are fourth and fifth in the standings.

  • Pastrana Devastated at Talladega

    Pastrana Devastated at Talladega

Driver of the No. 60 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, Travis Pastrana, led the way to green Saturday at the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Talladega Superspeedway. Pastrana came to Talladega 13th in the points standings.  Pastrana led the first four laps of the race before later being involved in a hard crash with No. 43 Pilot Travel Centers Ford driver, Reed Sorenson, on the backstretch of lap 73.

When asked what happened, Pastrana said, “We were hooked up.  We were great.  I practiced with the 43 car and we had a strategy and that was to stay in the back after we can try to lead a lap.  I don’t know what happened, but we were up there in the front and got tangled up in somebody else’s mess.  We’ve got the two fastest cars on the track and for me to be out already is just stupid on my part.  I just want to thank Jack Roush and all the team for giving me a great weapon out there and I think we definitely could have put it on top if we just kind of had a little more patience.  I’ve just got to swallow my ego next time and stop being up front.  We could run a half-lap down and I think we still could have charged to the end, but now that’s over.”

Commenting on how he can handle the high of leading his first green flag lap, and then being taken out by the accident, Pastrana said, “Honestly, it’s just stupid.  I just feel like a complete idiot because the race is still going on.  I’ve got to watch the rest of the thing and Trevor has a great car, but it would have been awesome to put our cars together.  I hope he wins for Roush and for my Monday morning conversation that we’re gonna have to have with Jack and explain to him why I crashed the car when all we had to be doing was sitting back.”

Winning his first career pole and the first pole for the Roush Fenway Racing Ford team wasn’t enough to keep Pastrana from being hard on himself after he got caught in the crash. When asked if he was being too hard on himself, he responded, “Nowhere to go when the crash happened, but we shouldn’t have been there.  There’s no reason for us to have been there and that’s entirely my fault.  I knew Trevor was gonna be running up front, but we can be sitting a half-lap back and we still would have had a chance to go for the win.  We had a great car and could have met up with him later, but I didn’t stick to the strategy and that’s why I’m being hard on myself.  Much thanks to the crew.  Everybody worked really hard.  I learned a lot about drafting.  I learned a lot about racing these restrictor plate races.  I’m just bummed out.  I’ll always have the fact that I led the crew to the green, but you don’t get great cars every race.  You’re lucky to get the two best cars on the track on your team at any event for the year and to have that at this event and to be watching the race is just devastating.”

Pastrana finished the Aaron’s 312 in 36th position, and will have his next chance at Victory Lane next Friday, May 10th, in the VFW Sport Clips Help a Hero 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, NC.

  • Smith wins a Crazy Day at Dega!

Smith wins a Crazy Day at Dega!

Regan Smith won the Aaron’s 312 which was a  unbelievable race that include rain, darkness, wrecks and replays! Kasey Kahne, Joey Logano, Kurt Busch and Justin Allgaier rounded out the top 5. NASCAR originally had Kahne win but the caution came out before the checkers waved making the #7 Tax Slayer Chevy the winner.

The race went green after a long delay that started about 4:15 Central time. Travis Pastrana led the field to the green for the first career time in his short career.  Danica Patrick caused the first caution on lap 19 when her #34 Turner Scott Motorsports Toyota got turned by Kyle Larson and sent her in to the wall and the wet grass. she got damage to her splitter and tried to go back out but could not maintain speed to contend for a win and went to the garage. Austin Dillon was slowing before the caution and fell a lap down. He went on pit road and he had a spark plug issue but they fixed it.

The second caution waved  when the #32 of Larson left rear tire exploded and basically half of his car was destroyed because of the tire. The No. 79 of Jeffery Earnhardt also spun during the Larson incident but he was able to drive away and head to pit road. Dillon was about to get the free pass but Mike Wallace got lapped right before the caution so he got the lucky dog.

At half way, we have had 25 lead changes with Kahne and Logano leading most of the way. Pastrana and Trevor Bayne as well as Sam Hornish Jr and Smith were up there and will be in contention for the win. Elliott Sadler had some engine troubles with 49 to go as he radioed to his CC that “temperature is getting hotter and hotter, we need to check for water or something. Blowing oil everywhere, inside the car.”

The third caution waved when the No. 43 of Reed Sorenson got turned by the #2 of Brian Scott and collected the No, 60 of Pastrana. Pastrana was just driving and was a innocent bystander. Sorenson got his back wheels airborne but did not flip. Pastrana took a really hard hit after getting hit by Sorenson from the turn 3 wall. Both were okay but both were done for the day.  Pastrana told ESPN that “Everything kind of happened really fast” and “me and Trevor should have still been sitting in the back.” He was really dejected but will learn from this for the future.

4th yellow waved when the No. 00 of Blake Koch smacked the wall on the backstretch. He was drafting with Allgaier and Allgaier turned down and Koch was there.

On lap 94, the big one happened. Johanna Long blocked Sam Hornish Jr into getting a spot on the high side and Hornish and Eric McClure got together. Mike Harmon, Scott, Nelson Piquet Jr, Bobby Gerhart, Long, Hornish Jr, Dexter Stacey, Robert Richardson Jr, Bayne, Tim Andrews and Ty Dillon were all involved.  There is also rain coming with darkness coming soon. NASCAR announced that they will cut the race by 10 laps so they can finish this before darkness.

Yellow waved once again with two laps to go because of the No. 54 of Joey Coulter got turned by Allgaier and smacked the front stretch wall. He got out and was fine but NASCAR said this was be the only GWC they would have. And boy, what a GWC it was!

  • Pastrana grabs the Aaron’s 312 pole at Talladega

Pastrana grabs the Aaron’s 312 pole at Talladega

Travis Pastrana, driver of the No. 60 Roush Fenway Racing Ford, captured the Coors Light Pole Award for the 22nd annual Aaron’s 312 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) race at Talladega Superspeedway.  This is Pastrana’s first pole in his first start at Talladega Superspeedway not to mention his first pole in 17 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts.

When Pastrana was asked for his thoughts on his first pole, he responded, “It sounds like a dream come true.  Bringing the guys to the line at the green flag at Talladega is awesome, so I’m definitely excited.  I mean, this Roush Fenway team has worked so hard.  Chad (Norris), my crew chief, he’s like, ‘We’ve been putting everything together.  Let’s go out there and get this thing.’ He had a lot of confidence in myself and the car and it’s just awesome to be able to show the work these guys are putting together and I’m definitely really happy to be here.”

Pastrana’s pole position is also Roush-Fenway Racing’s first NNS Coors Light pole at Talladega Superspeedway. Travis said, “Anytime Jack’s smiling, I’m smiling.  That’s a good deal.”

When asked what a pole means from a team and driver standpoint, Pastrana said, “On the restrictor plate races it means you went out there and drove a perfectly clean lap and that your car and that your crew and that everybody was working together.  You picked the right line and did the right stuff, but mostly that you have a great team and a great car.  Winning the pole at a restrictor place race also means that you’re gonna have a lot of people that are willing to work with you come race day, so I’m excited about that.”

The Aaron’s 312 race on Saturday will be Pastrana’s eighth start for the 2013 racing season.  He has had top ten finishes this season at Daytona, Las Vegas and Richmond.  Pastrana has completed 1,394 out of 1,420 laps and is currently ranked 13th in the series points standings.
