Allgaier wins at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

[media-credit name=”CIA Stock Photography, Inc.” align=”alignright” width=”223″][/media-credit]Justin Allgaier got redemption!  Allgaier won the 6th Annual NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) NAPA Auto Parts 200 presented by Dodge at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in one of the craziest races but perhaps the best of the season so far.

Allgaier bumped Jacques Villeneuve on the final lap to score his first NNS victory this season and his third career.

Sam Hornish Jr. finished second, Jacques Villeneuve third, Elliott Sadler fourth and Ron Fellows rounded out the top-5.

“Prior to that caution where we got spun out, you know, we were catching the 22 (Jacques Villeneuve) and felt like we had something for it. I felt like we had a winning car today, we just didn’t get the win. All in all, the guys did a great job. Another lap and I think I would have had the 31 (Justin Allgaier). To be able to come back from where we were at and have those kinds of problems I feel pretty good about it.” Hornish Jr. said.

Alex Tagliani started on the pole for the first time in his short career. Tagliani only completes one or two races a year due to racing in Indy full time. Tagliani led the first lap with Hornish Jr. following closely behind him.

Sadler headed to the pits after the first lap so that they could make it on only two pit stops. Everybody had to come in within the next 20-25 laps so that they could also make it a two stop race.  Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Allgaier made their stops on lap 3.

Nobody else pitted until lap 18 when Fellows came in and took four tires and fuel. Danica Patrick and Cole Whitt came in and took four tires but while that was happening, the No.14 of Eric McClure stopped in turn 9 and the No.23 car spun right in front of of Villeneuve, bringing out the caution.

Everybody that did not pit during green, came in.  Hornish Jr. got some tape off so that they would not heat up the brakes.  Villeneuve took four tires and told his team that he is holding his good stuff back for the very end.

Patrick restarted as the race leader on lap 21 and started to pull away from her teammate Fellows and Sadler. Patrick had a 1.067 lead when the No.41 car of Timmy Hill stopped in turn 6, bringing out the second caution of the afternoon. Sadler came in during the yellow and got four tires along with Stenhouse Jr.

Patrick led the field to the restart on lap 27 with everybody scrambling for position behind.  Kyle Busch went three wide into turn 2 and got the second position and almost got the lead from Patrick, but Patrick went hard into the corner and was able to keep the position.

Couple laps after the restart, Busch, who never completed one lap on the track in his career and Allgaier pitted for four tires since they were on different pit strategies than the rest.

The Caution came out for the third time on lap 33 when the No.23 car of Dexter Stacy hit the wall and stopped in turn 6. Fellows came in and got tires but he was the only one to pit.

Patrick was the leader once again and lead them to the green on lap 37.  Partick was starting to pull away but somebody threw a shoe, yes a shoe, out onto the race track and Patrick ran over it.  Patrick told crew chief Tony Eury Jr that she was feeling like the steering wheel was about to fall off and she couldn’t control it. Eury Jr. told her to pit if she could not control it or if she could, hold on for another 9 laps.

Villeneuve took the lead in turn 7 and started to pull away. Patrick said that something is going back and forth in her car. It moves when she turns, brakes, turns everything. The caution came out on lap 46 for debris on the track.

Pit stops happened on lap 47 with the top-5 looking like this, Villeneuve, Patrick, Tagliani, Billy Johnson and Hornish Jr. Patrick got four tires and the crew looked under the car which they found a bar hanging loose. They went behind the wall to fix the problem.

Sadler was in the lead when the race was restarted on lap 49.  Andrew Ranger, Allgaier, Mike Wallace and Kyle Kelley round out the top-5.

Ranger, Sadler and Fellows all went into pit road for their finals stops. They rejoined the field in 25th, 26th and 27th.  Villeneuve retook the lead with 20 laps to go but still did not pit. Allgaier went in a lap later and took four tires and fuel. Cole Whitt went to the garage with a lost cylinder.

Busch came in on lap 58 and got four tires and fuel.

The caution came out with 14 laps to go when the No.81 of Jason Bowles wheel hoped in the turn and spun into the gravel trap, bringing out the 5th caution of the day.  Villeneuve was told by his team to shut the car off to save fuel.  They were planning to go the rest of the way without pitting.

Hornish and Villeneuve restarted the race.  Everyone went into turn 1 beating and banging. Michael McDowell went hard into turn 2 and collected Hornish Jr.  Both drivers drove away but a lap later the No.59 of Kyle Kelley went into turn 1 and spun, collecting Patrick, Wallace and Hornish Jr.

One lap later Tagliani was leading when Villeneuve went for the lead into one, caught his back bumper and kept in the gas until he spun him out. Tagliani slipped back to eighth after the spin.

“I was a little bit on the inside and we tangled a little bit. I thought it would be alright so I didn’t get off the gas, I didn’t want the cars behind me to get to me. I ended up turning him around. That’s a shame. That wasn’t my intention.” Villeneuve said.

Caution came out for the sixth time when Wallace spun in the last turn where he wheel hopped and stopped.

They restarted and it was bombs away! The No.33, 30, 44, 12, 18, 54 and more all spun in turns one and two and caution came out due to the No.30 of Tagliani and the No.51 of Jeremy Clements stopped and couldn’t not get re-fired and there was tons of debris.

Everybody was having to save fuel while the track was being cleaned for debris.

They restarted on lap 76 (2 laps after the scheduled laps) with Villeneuve still leading. Everybody made it thru 1 and 2.  Things were looking good until Stenhouse Jr. tried to get on the back bumper of the No.22 and spun out and backed into the wall.  Derek White also spun from contact from Alex Kennedy.

They final restart of the race was clean.  Allgaier got onto the rear bumper of Villeneuve in turn 6, causing his to go wide into the turn.  Allgaier made the pass for the lead and never looked back.

“Dodge and Penske gave me an amazing car today. We had the car of the field today. We were untouchable. It makes the end result a little frustrating. We were a little bit low on fuel so I was being careful and as often happens (here) it goes a little bit crazy on the last lap.”

Allgaier thought Villeneuve was having fuel issues.

“I got run in to. It (fuel) was no problem. Into Turn 6 I think it was (Justin) Allgaier (who) just hit me really hard and that was it, which is very frustrating because our car was untouchable.” Villeneuve said.

Sadlers fourth place finish extends his lead in the series standings to 22 points over Stenhouse Jr.

  • Edwards wins the Zippo 200 at The Glen

Edwards wins the Zippo 200 at The Glen

[media-credit id=24 align=”alignright” width=”240″][/media-credit]Carl Edwards comes back to the Nationwide Series (NNS) and what does he do? He Wins! Edwards led nine laps in Saturday’s Zippo 200 at The Glen and took over the lead with two laps remaining to earn his 38th career and the first win in 2012.  Edwards also broke a tie for third with Kevin Harvick on the series’ all-time win list.

“This is huge for us. It’s nice to be in victory lane.” Edwards said.

Brad Keselowski led 43 laps and finished second.  Sam Hornish Jr. third, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. fourth and Ron Fellows rounded out the top-5.

Sam Hornish Jr. started on the pole first the first time in his NASCAR career.

Ryan Truex was going into to turn-1 when he went out of control and spun and collect Danica Patrick.

“I drove in the corner and got wheel-hopped and spun out back in front of everybody. Basically I wheel-hopped and it was either wheel-hop and hope I didn’t run into my teammate in front of me and take out the field, or turn in the grass and spin out and not hit anybody, and I chose the grass. I had no control after that.” Truex said.

Patrick tried to repair the damage in pit road but had to garage.  Patrick finished 43rd.

“I feel so bad. I wish it would have gone differently but that’s the sport. There’s a lot of stuff that is out of your control and there’s a lot of stuff you look back at that you would’ve, could’ve, should’ve done differently. But that’s just racing.” Patrick said.

The first caution came out when the No,19 car of Alex Popow cut a tire and slammed into the guard rail throwing debris everywhere. They had a chance to pit but no came in and they stayed in there position for the time being.

They went back to green on lap 10 with Sam Hornish leading since the green flag. Hornish was under attack from his teammate Brad Keselowski. Keselowski took over the lead two laps later.

Green flag pit stops occurred on lap 19 with Justin Allgaier hitting the pit road. He told his crew that he was tight coming up the hill. They took four tires and had a air pressure adjustment. The No.18 of Joey Logano was loose in but he needs to be more loose off. They also took four tires. Carl Edwards went in and was telling the team he was tight in the carousel and got some air pressure. Kyle Busch and Hornish wrapped up the lead lap green flag pit stops. Busch said he need more grip but otherwise was not that bad. He got four tires and a air pressure. Hornish was reporting a little vibration when he was under braking but other then that  he was okay. He said he was free everywhere especially the right handers.

The only person that has not pitted was the No.87 of Alex Kennedy but on lap 29, Keselowski was much quicker and took over the top spot.

The second caution came out on lap 37 when Kennedy got loose in turns 3 and 4 and slammed into the guard rail. Austin Dillon also spun out to not run into the No.87 car. The top-5 did not stop but Dillon had to pit to change tires due to his spin. Kasey Kahne also came in during the caution. Dillon will start at the tail of the field since he did not stop in inner loop under green.

We restarted the race on lap 43 with Keselowski still leading. It was a crazy restart with all the leaders going three wide.

The final pit stops occurred with 32 laps to go. Elliott Sadler got a air pressure and told the team to pack it full of fuel. He also needed a track bar to help him turn right. Busch came in and need to help turn in the front and the back. He got a air pressure and a track bar. Edwards said the car was great and all they need to do was fill it with fuel and  clean the grill.  Kahne beat everybody off of pit road because he only took fuel due to the previous caution.

While that was happening, Edwards and Logano were racing hard into 7 and spun the No.18 out. Logano told his crew chief to tell the No.60 to “bite him”.

On the other side of the track, Joe Nemecheck was stopped on pit road and the caution was waved. Miguel Paludo and Justin Allgaier did not pit and will be pitting during this caution.

Kahne led the field back to the green flag with 23 laps to go but Keselowski took the spot in turn-1. Busch made it three wide and took second.
The caution waved once again for the fourth time when the No.88 of Cole Whitt went into turn-5 and clipped the barrier and tore the front bumper off his car. During the caution, Busch told his team the throttle is sticking.
They restarted the race with 10 laps to go and Edwards was determined to get this lead. Edwards drove down into turn-1 and made it stick and took the spot and started to pull away. It looked like Edwards was going to run away with this win.
Five laps to go, Keselowski was still going strong but Edwards got a nice run off of 1 and were battling for the lead. During that battle, Dillon blew a right front tire and was throwing debris everywhere. Logano was radioing to his team (during the caution) that his engine was not running so well and he would try and nurse it home for the finish.
They restarted the race with two laps to go with Edwards in the lead. The No.18 and the No.54 did not get a good jump and spun their tires.  Keselowski tried to take the lead on the high side but could not get it done.
“I hate to admit it, but I missed a downshift in Turn 6. All day, that was where he was beating me, so I went in there extra hard, and I missed my downshift and he got next to me.” Edwards said.

  • Sadler wins in Corn Country!

    Sadler wins in Corn Country!

[media-credit name=”Kyle Ocker” align=”alignright” width=”232″][/media-credit]Elliott Sadler won the U.S. Cellular 250 at Iowa Speedway for his fourth win this season and a little bit of redemption from last week. Sadler who told ESPN’S Shannon Spake said that his dad gave him a great quote. Elliott said, “Elliott don’t let NASCAR take the championship away from you. Go to Iowa and give them ****”. You could see the relief on his face as he celebrated to his team in victory lane. Justin Allgaier, Sam Hornish Jr, who won the dash for cash, Michael Annett and Ricky Stenhouse Jr rounded out the top 5.

Sadler started on the pole and led the 43 NASCAR Nationwide series cars to the green. It did not take long for the lead to change as the 18 year old of Darrell Wallace Jr took the top spot on the back stretch.  This is Wallace’s 2nd race as the other race he competed in was earlier this year at the very same track.

On lap 35 Wallace was leading until he caught lap traffic which made Austin Dillon and Justin Allgaier catch the leader. Dillon took the top spot until the competition caution on lap 50.

The leader came in during that caution. Justin Allgaier told the team he is very tight and he has no side bite so they gave him an air pressure adjustment and 4 tires. Dillon came in and also was tight but it was getting better as the run went on.  He only took two tires and came out second as Sadler also took 2 tires and lead them off pit road.

Sadler led the field back to the green flag on lap 57 but got pushed back to 2nd as Dillon took over the top spot. Brian Scott had to make a unscheduled pit stop as he felt a vibration on his right front. He came in got 4 tires and fuel and went back out but fell back to 31st, 2 laps down.

Caution came out for the 2nd time when the 44 of John Blanketship got spun by Jeremy Clements  in turn 2. All of the leaders came in as Dillon took four tires and was off but lost 9 spots. Stenhouse’s tire changer slipped coming to the left side of the car which slowed his stop.Stenhouse took 4 tires and a wedge adjustment. Sadler was talking in code with his crew saying they would take “Alabama”. He took 4 tires but barely avoided a penalty when the tire came off the right side and almost left the pit but the rear tire changer caught it and saved it. Allgaier came out first as well as Cole Whitt and gained 10 spots.

Allgaier lead the field to the green flag on lap 96 followed by Michael McDowell, Sam Hornish Jr, Cole Whitt and Michael Annett. Dillon came in on lap 138 with a vibration and took 4 tires and fuel. He finished 15th when he could not get a lap back.  Allgaier was leading by 3.90 seconds when he caught the 01 of Mike Wallace, who was running 19, which made Sadler catch up to him and contend for the top spot.

Caution came out for debris for the 3rd time tonight as the leaders could make their last pit stops here in Iowa. The race leader came in to his pit, telling his pit crew that he was tight in the center and loose threw the turns, got four tires and an air pressure adjustment. Sadler got 4 tires wanting more forward bite and also some fuel. Allgaier went off pit road 1st while Sadler lost a spot to Kurt Busch who got 4 tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment.

Allgaier led the field to the green flag with 178 in the books and started to pull away. Sadler gained lap by lap and caught the 31 and passed him for the lead with 57 to go and never looked back.

Kurt Busch was running second when a tire got cut with three laps to go and he had to go in a to get some new right side tires. He finished 17th driving for his brother Kyle.

  • Keselowski Wins the Inaugural Indiana 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series Race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Keselowski Wins the Inaugural Indiana 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series Race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Indianapolis Motor Speedway kicked of its inaugural NASCAR Nationwide Series race today with stories and drama galore! Three jumped restarts, only one of which resulted in a penalty; Danica Patrick’s return to the Brickyard resulted in a wrecked car; the Dillon brothers finishing in the top 5 with Ty beating out brother Austin; Michael Annett wins the $100,000 Dash for Cash; and Brad Keselowski wins the race after Elliott Sadler is black flagged with 10 laps to go.

Kasey Kahne started on the pole and was jumped on the start by Kyle Busch but never penalized. Kyle Busch led 3 times for 51 laps. Kyle was running in the top 5 on lap 80 when he spun in front of the field and lost a ton of track position. Kyle would go on to finish 22nd.

On lap 40 of the 100 lap event, Danica Patrick got into the #98 of Reed Sorenson causing the two to get together and end Danica’s day. Danica finished 35th and Reed Sorenson finished in 33rd. “I just tapped him a little bit, and when I did, he slid sideways. I tried to go around him and didn’t quite get by him and spun around, and unfortunately that was it. I am sorry if I did anything to affect his day, but I didn’t mean to” Danica said after the accident.

On a lap 82 restart Elliott Sadler was running in 2nd place behind Brad Keselowski. Elliott was being pushed by Austin Dillon, and in-car cameras made it sound as if Keselowski spun his tires. The result was a black flag for Elliott Sadler with 11 laps to go in the race. The black flag cost Sadler, in the #2 OneMain Financial Chevrolet, a shot at the win and a $100,000 bonus in the Dash for Cash. Sadler, who finished in 15th, tweeted after the race, “After meeting with NASCAR.. They said I DIDNT JUMP START but seems to be my fault the 22 spun his tires… I’m devastated”. Michael Annett, in the #43 Pilot Ford, finished ahead of Sadler and claimed the $100,000 Dash for Cash from Nationwide Insurance. “This is awesome. This is the Brickyard. We aren’t kissing any bricks today but we have a big cardboard check that we can lay our lips on” said Annett.

Brad Keselowski, in the #2 Discount Tire Dodge, gave team owner Roger Penske his first stock car victory at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and 100th NASCAR win. Brad Keselowski said, “I’ve been watching races here since I was a kid in Michigan. Everybody knows how special Indy is and any win that you can have here, whether it’s the Indy 500 or the Brickyard here tomorrow, the first Nationwide race, every race is special.” When asked about the final restart and black flag for Sadler, Keselowski said, “I can tell you my perception of it was I got a push from Sam (Hornish), and it was a little more that I could take, and certainly I wasn’t going full throttle but I was not in the zone when Elliott took off. It appeared that Elliott got a push from behind, as well, and maybe he just couldn’t slow down, I don’t know. I don’t know how it all played out.”

Sam Hornish Jr., also driving for Roger Penske in the #12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge, finished in 2nd place and led 7 laps during the race. Ty Dillon, driving the #51Wesco Chevrolet, finished 3rd beating brother Austin, who finished in 5th, by two spots. Denny Hamlin finished in 4th place. The rest of the top 10 were Michael Annett in 6th, Joey Logano 7th, Paul Menard 8th, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. 9th, and Jeremy Clements finished 10th.

The race had 9 lead changes among 6 drivers, 5 cautions for 24 laps, and margin of victory or 3.304 seconds. Elliott Sadler now leads Austin Dillon by just 1 point in the driver standings after 19 races.

  • Bad Brad wins the Indy 250 at Indianapolis

Bad Brad wins the Indy 250 at Indianapolis

[media-credit name=”Credit: Tyler Barrick/Getty Images for NASCAR” align=”alignright” width=”227″][/media-credit]In a wild race, Brad Keselowski won the inaugural NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) Indy 250 with his Penske teammate Sam Hornish Jr. finishing second.  This was Roger Penske’s first win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) in NASCAR and Keselowski’s first win at the speedway.  This win also gave Penske its 100th victory in NASCAR.

Ty Dillon, making his second NNS start, finished third (his career best finish), Denny Hamlin finished fourth and Austin Dillon finished fifth.

Polesitter Kasey Kahne led them to the green flag when Kyle Busch took off as they went into turn one.  Kahne told his team on the radio that the No.54 should get a penalty because he jumped the start.  NASCAR said that the No.38 Great Clips car did not start and that the No.54 would not get a penalty.

Busch lead the first 15 laps en route to the competition caution. All of the leaders came down for pit stops. Denny Hamlin came in for 2 tires and a wedge adjustment. Dillon came into the pits fifth and got two tires as well. The No.54 car came in the leader and got two tires but they held Busch for just two seconds for fuel and lost three spots. Keselowski won the race off pit road.

Green flag pit stops started to occur on lap 36 with the Discount Tire Dodge of Keselowski . Keselowski took four tires and a track bar adjustment because he was a little free off the corner.  The No.54 and the No.18 both took four tires.

While that was happening, Danica Patrick and Reed Sorenson got together when Patrick went into turn-1 and bumped into the No.98 of Sorenson.  Sorenson tried to save it but came back up the track and caught Patrick, sending them both to the outside wall.  Patrick was not happy and showed her anger thru her in car camera.  Patrick said she just got shuffled back and she doesn’t know if she tapped him.

“It’s just unfortunate for our day. It’s a big race, a big weekend.” Patrick said.

The rest of the leaders came into pit during the caution. The No.12 of Sam Hornish took four tires and won the race off pit road. Kasey Kahne lost two positions due to putting tape on the car.

The third caution came out with 37 laps to go for Debris. All of the leaders came in to pit maybe for the last time. the No.12 and the No.43 took two tires and came out first and second. The No.54 came in and was told to save fuel because they are four laps short. The No.22 car took 4 four tires and got tape for the grill.

They restarted with 34 laps to go with Hornish Jr. leading. Keselowski took the lead from his teammate with 29 to go and also having to save fuel.

The fourth caution came out when Brian Scott was battling Kahne and Scott spun and saved it but got little damage from Dillon. There was some takers for pit road to top off for fuel but none of the front runners came in.

They got back to green with Keselowski leading. Busch spun coming off turn-1 and made a great save to keep it off the wall. Busch will have to come to pit road so the fuel mileage situation (for him) is gone. Busch finished 22nd.

With 15 laps to go, Elliott Sadler was the race leader and got black flagged. Keselowski  was the leader on the restart and spun his tires (just like Kasey at the start). Sadler was asking NASCAR to review it and they did, but they still made Sadler come down pit road on lap 89.

“It’s so wrong to penalize me for a mistake they made.” Sadler radioed to his crew. “NASCAR just took the championship away from me. They just took the damn championship right out of our hands.”

Sadler finished battled back to finish 15th after the penalty and remains the series points leader by two points over Dillon.

Sixth place finisher Michael Annett captured the Nationwide’s $100,000 Dash 4 cash.  “This is awesome. This is the Brickyard. We aren’t kissing any bricks today but we have a big cardboard check that we can lay our lips on.”

  • Sadler wins the NNS STP 300 at Chicagoland

Sadler wins the NNS STP 300 at Chicagoland

[media-credit name=”Dan Sanger” align=”alignright” width=”233″][/media-credit]Elliott Sadler won the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) STP 300 at Chicagoland Speedway on Sunday. Sadler led 35 laps and captured his first win at Chicagoland and the third of the season.

Sadler, spent most of the week battling a stomach virus, held off a hard charging Ricky Stenhouse Jr. on the final green-white-checkers restart.

Sadler also claimed a $100,000 bonus from series sponsor Nationwide Insurance through its Dash 4 Cash program. Stenhouse, Allgaier and Wallace will be the other three drivers vying for the $100,000 bonus next weekend.

Stenhouse lead a race high of 135 laps but had to pit during the green flag and the caution came out during his stop and he had to go to the back on the restart with 28 laps to go.

Justin Allgaier finished third, Kenny Wallace (best finish this season) fourth and Michael Annett rounded out the top-5.

“That’s just shades of the past.” Wallace said. “That’s the Hermanator.”

They started the race in overcast skies and Stenhouse loved those track conditions. Stenhouse started on pole but Sam Hornish lead the first 7 laps but then Stenhouse took over the lead and never looked back. Stenhouse, who drives for Jack Roush, has never won in Chicagoland and never has his team owner. They have had 37 starts and 11 poles, but Roush Fenway Racing (RFR) continues on without a win.

Green flag pit stops were starting to occur around lap 40 with the leaders coming in about two laps later. Kyle Busch was running 4th when he was too fast exiting and had to come in for a drive through penalty. Busch caught a good break when the No.23 of Jamie Dick broke something and stopped on the apron in turns 1 and 2. Brenden Gaughan also had trouble in the pits when he went to go in but caught the commitment cone and missed pit road. The caution came out and he and Mike Bliss went in for there stops.

On lap 127 the 3rd caution was waved when Brad Sweet spun the 38 Great Clips car in turns 1 and 2. Everybody pitted except for Stenhouse, Parker Kligerman, Austin Dillon, Brian Scott and Cole Whitt.

The third round of pit stops occurred around lap 165 when Dillon came in. Dillon got an air pressure adjustment hoping to correct a too tight condition. Stenhouse came in saying that something starting to go wrong with the right rear tire “bouncing”. Right in the middle of green flag pit stops Brad Sweet spun coming off of turn 2 and the caution came out. The rest of the drivers that did not pit on green including the No.2 of Elliott Sadler and the No.31 of Justin Allgaier came in and got four tires.

The final caution came out with 7 laps to go when the No.12 car of Sam Hornish Jr. pushed the No.54 of Busch into the wall collecting Gaughan. Busch was not happy and declined to comment after exiting his car. Hornish Jr. went on his radio told his crew chief to tell the “No.54 and the No.33 he is sorry and it was all his fault”.

    News and Notes:

Elliott Sadler told ESPN’S reporter Mike Massero that he was 60% but he would run the entire race.

ESPN reported on lap 40 that 12 drivers have already start and parks.

Danica Patrick finished 14th and Travis Pastrana finished 17th respectively.

Elliott Sadler, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Kenny Wallace and Justin Allgaier all qualified for the Nationwide series Dash for Cash at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Brad Keselowski Wins Nationwide Race; Austin Dillon Wins Dash4Cash

[media-credit name=”Kirk Schroll” align=”alignright” width=”231″][/media-credit]Brad Keselowski, in the No. 22 Snap -On Penske Dodge, sat on the pole, led the most laps and took the checkered flag, as well as the American flag, right to Victory Lane.

The win was Keselowski’s second victory in 2012 and his first win at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Keselowski also now ranks 15th on the all-time win list in the Nationwide Series.

“It was a great day,” Keselowski said. “It was one of those days when things came together,”

“We unloaded yesterday with a lot of speed and tried to work on making sure it stayed there,” Keselowski continued. “It feels good to finally come here and close the deal.”

“It’s great to have Roger (Penske) here today to witness it and be part of it,” Keselowski said. “I’m very proud of the effort and proud of the result.”

Kevin Harvick, driving the No. 33 Barber Foods Chevrolet, finished second and was totally unhappy after the race finish. While it was a positive finish overall, he was most displeased with the lapped car No. 24 car of Amber Cope, who broke his momentum and cost him the win.

“It was a good day,” Harvick said. “The 22 and I were pretty evenly matched and I knew the restart was the best place to capitalize.”

“It just came down to an unfortunate deal there and we got beat,” Harvick continued. “Obviously we wish we would have been able to win the race but got cut up in a cluster of lapped cars.”

“That 24 car is somebody who shouldn’t be on the race track,” Harvick said. “She wants to be Danica Patrick but she can’t hold her helmet.”

This was Harvick’s 11th top-10 finish in 12 races at the Magic Mile and his sixth top-10 finish in 2012.

Rookie driver Austin Dillon, sans crew chief due to his penalty of last week, finished in the third position in his No. 3 Advocare Chevrolet. Dillon was also the highest finishing rookie, the highest finishing Nationwide regular, and the winner of the $100,000 in the Nationwide Dash4Cash.

The young, up and coming driver beat out Elliott Sadler, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and Michael Annett, the other three eligible drivers for the Nationwide Series Dash4Cash prize.

“It’s great,” Dillon said. “Winning our first Nationwide race at Kentucky was our number one moment of the year but this comes close.”

“We started 12th and got up there quick,” Dillon continued. “Dash4Cash racing right there was awesome. I gave it my all.”

And what was Dillon planning to do with all that cash won from the Dash4Cash promotion?

“I said I was going to get a pool,” Dillon said. “I wish I had a pool right now.”

“Maybe I’ll be smart like my Grandpa and invest it.”

“I want to thank Nationwide for letting us do this, Dillon continued. “To run for a hundred grand is amazing.”

Sam Hornish, Jr., in the No. 12 Alliance Truck Parts Dodge, came in fourth, giving Roger Penske top-five finishes for both Nationwide cars and some welcome good news after the suspension of his Cup driver A.J. Allmendinger this past weekend.

“At the end of the day, a top-five finish is good,” Hornish said. “All in all, I’m pretty happy with how we ran.”

“Just wish we would have had a little bit more for those guys at the end of the race.”

There was also drama on pit road after the race with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., who was overcome with heat and stretched out on pit road until a stretch took him to the infield care center. Stenhouse had been ill all week, which in addition to the heat, no doubt caused such a physical reaction at race end.

In spite of it all, Stenhouse, Jr., in the No. 6 Cargill Ford, was able to gut it out to finish in the fifth position.

“Ricky has been sick most of the week just fighting the flu bug,” crew chief Mike Kelley said. “At the end of the race I think the heat and the exhaustion caught up with him.”

“They’ve got him in the infield care center,” Kelley continued. “He’s awake and alert and getting some fluids in him.”

    “He’ll be fine.”

Both Danica Patrick and Travis Pastrana wrecked in the F.W. Webb 200. Patrick was able to soldier on, bringing her No. 7 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet to the checkered flag in the 14th position.

Pastrana, however, was not as fortunate, finishing 31st in his No. 99 Boost Mobile Toyota Camry for RAB Racing. Pastrana suffered a hard hit into the wall, with some flames in the car erupting after the crash.

“Just the tire went flat coming into the corner,” Pastrana said. “I was locking up the brakes a lot trying to get the car in and eventually just wore out that right-front tire.”

“They gave me such a great car to start out there,” Pastrana continued. “I hate that I just went too soon on that first green when everyone started going.”

Kasey Kahne, in the No. 38 Great Clips Chevrolet, Elliott Sadler, in the OneMain Financial Chevrolet, Justin Allgaier, in the No. 31 Brandt Chevrolet, Jamie McMurray, in the No. 30 LiftMaster Chevrolet, and Ryan Truex, in the Grime Boss Chevrolet, rounded out the top ten finishers.

After this race, Elliott Sadler leads the point standings in the NASCAR Nationwide Series by three points over Austin Dillon.

Kurt Busch wins wild Subway Jalapeno 250 at Daytona

[media-credit name=”Credit: Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images” align=”alignright” width=”228″][/media-credit]Before the green flag even flew in the Subway Jalapeno 250 on Friday night at the Daytona International Speedway there had already been fireworks.

Danica Patrick in a way called her shot. Saying she wasn’t going to bet against herself while her team said it was the night that she broke through. Unfortunately her night ended like her others at Daytona, wrecked.

Then in qualifying last weekend’s winner, Austin Dillon, went out and won the pole. His celebration was short lived. Dillon failed post-qualifying inspection because of an open cooling hose in his Chevrolet. He failed under section 20A-2.1J and had his time disallowed and moved to the rear of the field. Any further penalties will be announced early next week.

When the race went green it didn’t take long for the action to get exciting even though drivers quickly made their way into the tandem style drafting. Pairing after pairing took their turn at the front, seeing only two cautions and 12 drivers having led by halfway.

During much of the second half of the event the Busch brothers, Kyle and Kurt, often found themselves the leaders with Kurt leading on six different occasions for a race high 23 of 101 laps. But fan favorite Patrick soon arrived and began to flex her muscle, making moves without any drafting help at times.

Then came the Big One on lap 65, which would change the complexion of the race. As Mike Wallace slowed in turn two the hard charging pack behind him had nowhere to go. When the smoked cleared 16 cars involved including Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Mike Wallace, Clint Bowyer and other favorites.

Kurt Busch came out with damage as well but it wasn’t enough to keep him out of contention. The James Finch team taped up their No. 1 Chevrolet and watched Busch fight back through the field. Whether his car was spewing water or losing its drafting help, Busch continued to fight and found himself near the front when it mattered most.

A debris caution three laps to go set up the races finish. A green-white-checkered finish that saw Stenhouse push Busch past the tandem of Dillon and Annett. Then as Busch crossed the finish line Dillon spun behind him, collecting Kyle Busch, Johanna Long and Jason Bowles.

It was the second win for Busch in 2012 but his first for Phoenix. In April he delivered Kyle Busch Motorsports their first career NNS win. It was also the first time Busch had won at Daytona and the 23rd win of his career. But, Friday night in Daytona it was all about the little team who could.

“We just won at Daytona!” shouted Busch in Victory lane. “I got these guys at Phoenix, this is unbelievable. Passion and heart, that’s all I can give. That’s all I can do right now. And to do this for James Finch, this is awesome. To be an underfunded team, to come out only four times a year – we’ll be at Indy in a few weeks – it’s amazing to do what we can with a little team and to preserve.

“And Ricky Stenhouse, in a Ford, thanks to him, this Chevrolet is in Victory Lane. Thanks to Nationwide and these fans. Running this series gives me a lot of confidence but it’s just passion and heart. That’s all I can give right now.”

There was no shortage of emotion from Busch or the Phoenix team.

“I’m a racer. I don’t know much about anything else. There’s time when you get caught up in marketing or PR and everything else that goes along with it, but you’ve got to do all the steps in this day and age.

“I keep saying I grew up 30 years too late, I still haven’t grown up, even though I’m 33. But back in the 80s, that’s what this team reminds me of. It’s family. And you go hard or you go home.”

Stenhouse finished second and Annett third, earning his best career NNS finish. They were also two of the four drivers who became eligible for the Dash4Cash program along with Dillon and Sadler. They’ll race for $100,000 bonus next weekend in New Hampshire.

Going into New Hampshire, Sadler remains the point leader over Dillon. Stenhouse still sits third.

The Subway Jalapeno 250 also set a record for lead changes and leaders. There were 42 lead changes and 16 leaders, the previous record had been 38 lead changes among 16 drivers back in February.

Austin Dillon wins first NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Kentucky Speedway

Austin Dillon dominates at Kentucky Speedway

Austin Dillon won his second pole of the 2012 season Friday afternoon in the Feed the Children 300 at Kentucky Speedway with a lap of 31.359 seconds and a speed of 172.199 mph. Kevin Harvick qualified second, Brad Keselowski started third, Sam Hornish Jr. fourth, and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. started in fifth.

Dillon would go on to dominate and bring the famous black No. 3, owned by Dillon’s grandfather Richard Childress, back to victory lane, scoring his first win in 26 starts in the NASCAR Nationwide Series. Dillon’s win is the first for the number No. 3 in the Nationwide Series since Dale Earnhardt Jr. won with it in 2010.

“I know Dale is smiling down to see that 3 get a win tonight,” said team owner Richard Childress.

Dillon, in the Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet, lead by as much as 9 seconds and at one point in the race, had lapped all but 8 cars, until a caution came out on lap 143 when Mike Wallace hit the wall. The caution came out during a round of green flag pit stops. Dillon restarted first and would never be challenged for the lead. He would lead 192 laps in the 200 lap event.

Kurt Busch, driving the Monster Energy Toyota owned by his brother Kyle, finished in second after starting in eighth place. Harvick finished third in the Hunt Brothers Pizza Chevrolet.

Michael Annett scored his best ever Nationwide Series finish in 4th driving the Pilot/Flying J Ford with Justin Allgaier in fifth and Hornish Jr. in sixth.

The rest of the top 10 were Brad Keselowski, Stenhouse Jr., Elliott Sadler, and James Buescher. Danica Patrick finished two laps down in 12th. Only eight cars were running on the lead lap.

Dillon’s win broke the race record for most laps lead at Kentucky breaking Carl Edwards’ record of 150 laps lead. This race was also the fastest NASCAR Nationwide Series 300 mile event at Kentucky Speedway being with an average speed of 152.54 mph shattering the previous speed of 138.46 mph.

Dillon currently leads the points by tw0 over Elliott Sadler.

Following post-race inspection, Dillon’s car was found to be too low in the rear. Dillon’s crew chief, Danny Stockman, said, “We’ve had an issue before. We addressed it in a meeting. It should have been addressed. That’s the only comment I’ve got.”

Elliott Sadler’s team failed post-race inspection in Iowa for a similar infraction and the team was docked 6 points and fined $10,000. NASCAR has stated the penalties will be announced early in the upcoming week. If a point penalty is assessed, Dillon could lose the point lead.

SPARTA, Ky. – Driver Austin Dillon delivered his first NASCAR Nationwide Series Kentucky Speedway pole award and will lead tonight’s 43-car Feed The Children 300 field to the 7:30 p.m. green flag after turning a 172.199 mph (31.359 seconds) lap in the No. 3 Richard Childress Racing (RCR) car.

Dillon, who set the current Kentucky Speedway NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) qualifying record with a 179.868 (30.022 seconds) lap on Oct. 1, 2011, will share tonight’s front row with Kevin Harvick, Inc., (KHI) owner Kevin Harvick, who knocked out a 171.401 mph (31.505 seconds) qualifying effort in his No. 33 KHI ride.

“It was really good. Actually that first lap, it worried me because we got a really bad push and it was too tight. I over drove a little bit. We were able to recover on the second lap which has been a slower lap for us all weekend,” Dillon said. “That really shows you how fast our car is. The BASS Pro Shops team is doing a good job this weekend and I can’t wait to get in the race tonight when it cools down and see how our car reacts to the different temperature.”

He will make his NNS track debut owning three career Kentucky Speedway pole awards. He earned his first at the track on Sept. 3, 2010 for a 225-mile NCWTS race.

Harvick will make his second straight and fourth career NNS Kentucky Speedway start tonight. He earned a victory in the series inaugural 300-mile event at the track on June 16, 2001, placed second to Penske Racing’s Brad Keselowski in last season’s Feed The Children 300 and owns a total of three top-10 NNS finishes at the facility through three career starts.

Keselowski qualified third with a 170.611 mph (31.651 seconds) lap. He took last season’s Feed The Children 300 title from the fifth spot on the starting grid.

Tickets for tonight’s race remain on sale through the tickets page of this Web site, by phone at (859) 578-2300, and at the Kentucky Speedway gates and corporate offices at the track.
