  • 2018 class officially joins the hall

2018 class officially joins the hall

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A speech written by the late Robert Yates for his induction capped off the 2018 class’s enshrinement into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Yates — his words read by fellow NASCAR Hall of Fame member Dale Jarrett, who won his lone Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship driving for Robert Yates Racing — thanked people such as Bill France Jr., Edsel Ford (who inducted him), the people at the Holman Moody engine shop, Junior Johnson and the Allison family.

“The Allisons have been a big part of my life,” Yates said. “I won a championship with Bobby (Allison) in 1983 at DiGard (Racing), and then got to work with Davey (Allison), who was always so positive. When I bought Harry Ranier Racing, I knew other people wanted to hire him, so we talked about it, and he said to me, ‘Robert, I’ll always work for you. You don’t ever have to worry about me.’

“Losing Davey was painful. We shed a lot of tears and didn’t know how we would move on, but we did.”

He thanked Jarrett and crew chief Todd Parrot for the success they achieved and what he called “a special time in my life with a special group of people.”

“So to you, Dale, Todd, and everyone who worked at Robert Yates racing or in our engine shop, you have my deepest appreciation,” he said.

Yates wrapped up by thanking his family, such as sister Martha Brady, who made Yates move in with her at Wake Forest to improve his academics.

“I was the only kid in my family that didn’t make straight A’s,” he said. “That’s when my sister, Martha Brady, stepped in. I moved from Charlotte to Wake Forest and lived with her. She told me what classes I was going to take, and that was the first time I studied and made straight A’s.”

His other sister, Doris Roberts, convinced him to attend Wilson Technical College, where he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering.

“So if it wasn’t for my two sisters, I don’t know where I’d be today,” he said.

While working for Junior Johnson, Yates took son Doug to the shop, where he’d “sort out nuts and bolts.”

“He could sort them out and put them all in the right bin. I knew he was destined for a career in racing,” he said. “Little did I know that would include working side by side with him for 20 years. Doug, I couldn’t be prouder of the man you are today. I love you.”

After the ceremony, Doug Yates said that he hadn’t seen any of the speech prior to hearing it during his father’s induction, although he was offered the chance earlier that day.

He thanked his daughter Amy and his wife of 51 years Carolyn, then thanked God to conclude his speech.

“I never prayed to win a race. I just prayed for the wisdom to help me make good decisions,” Yates added “My creator didn’t always give me what I asked for, but he gave me more than I deserved. I thank you for this great honor. Good night, and God bless.”

Robert Yates wrote this speech after his health took a turn for the worse. He died of liver cancer on October 2, 2017 at the age of 74.

His induction was the highlight of a class that enshrined Red Byron, Ray Evernham, Ron Hornaday Jr. and Ken Squier.

Squier, who fought tooth and nail against the campaign to induct him, a pure broadcaster, into the hall, said he felt “like an odd duck in a flock of fancy geese.”

Always the master storyteller, Squier used his induction speech to spotlight the other inductees.

“Now, think about those nominations for 2018: A preacher’s son who built not only great engines but great teams of people, human beings who harmonized like a finely-tuned engine, the late and great Robert Yates,” he said. “And drivers like Hornaday, Ron Hornaday. It was Jean Shepherd who wrote, ‘If horse racing was the sport of kings, then auto racing was the sport of friends.’ Ron Hornaday represents that character of drivers that comes from every short track in America. He’s it.

“And there’s Ray Evernham, modified star, Wall Stadium, Belmar, New Jersey, who learned and listened every time, everywhere, and was to develop a race team that brought Dodge back to racing. Remember Homestead 2001? What a race.

“For some of us, there’s one story this year that I believe deserves special place in this or nearly any Hall of Fame. Red Byron represents the spirit and the passion of NASCAR racing. He was the common man doing uncommon deeds, which has been the history of this country, when the chips are down.”

Ray Evernham took his place in the hall.

“The Hendrick family became very special to me. I love and appreciate those that are here, and I miss the ones that we lost every day,” he said.

“Rick Hendrick, where do I begin. You saw more in me than I saw in myself. You believed in me. I was a young, unorthodox crew chief. You were the first person to stay on my side with my son in the hospital, Ray J. You stood by my side when I decided to take two tires at Charlotte. You didn’t really stand by my side, he kind of paced back and forth behind me, but he didn’t ask me to change my mind. He stood by me when I wanted to start my own team, and if he wasn’t terribly under the weather with the flu, as most of America is, he’d be standing by my side tonight. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve a friend like you, Rick, but thank you very much.”

Ron Hornaday was the first Camping World Truck Series driver inducted into the hall.

He famously allowed drivers such as Jimmie Johnson and Kevin Harvick to sleep on his couch early in their driving careers, a favor which Harvick later repaid in a Truck Series ride for Hornaday.

He also spent two sleepless nights pondering what he’d say.

“Everybody says, you know, just — first of all, I started two nights, can’t sleep, he said. “Sitting up here trying to think what you’re going to say to anybody, and it’s the toughest thing you’d ever say. And everybody would just say just be yourself, it’s easy. It’s the frigging Hall of Fame, guys.”

Coca-Cola Refreshes Partnerships with NASCAR & ISC

    Renewed Partnerships Build Upon Coca-Cola’s 50-Year History in NASCAR;

Coca-Cola Continues as ‘Official Soft Drink of NASCAR’; Most Poured Soft Drink Across NASCAR-Sanctioned tracks

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 17, 2018) – Coca-Cola, International Speedway Corporation (ISC) and NASCAR today announced an extension to each of its long-standing partnerships through 2023. Coca-Cola, an iconic global brand, will continue its deep-rooted history in the sport by engaging racing fans across NASCAR’s three national series and 12 ISC-operated race tracks.

The first-of-its kind integrated agreement is designed to deliver value to Coca-Cola across both the sanctioning body and ISC properties. Building on a 50-year relationship in the sport, Coca-Cola utilizes an immersive marketing approach to engage fans, customers and employees across virtually every facet of the NASCAR ecosystem. The strategy has resulted in Coca-Cola being one of the most recognized sponsors in the sport (according to the 2017 NASCAR sponsor loyalty survey conducted for SportsBusiness Journal/Daily by Turnkey Sports & Entertainment).

“We’re elated to announce an extension to this winning formula,” said Stuart Kronauge, SVP of Marketing & Business Unit President of USA Operations, The Coca-Cola Company. “The association with NASCAR, iconic tracks across the country, the Coca-Cola 600 and the Coca-Cola 400, and the drivers of the Coca-Cola Racing Family creates an ideal relationship between the brands, the sport and fans. It allows for a fully integrated experience that connects Coca-Cola with NASCAR fans at every level – locally, nationally, at the track, in store, at home and elsewhere.”

While Coca-Cola has been involved with stock car racing for 50 years, the brand became an Official Partner of NASCAR in 1998. The extended agreement furthers Coca-Cola’s position as the “Official Soft Drink of NASCAR.” Additionally, a signature part of the brand’s marketing strategy is the Coca-Cola Racing Family – a group of top drivers that includes Austin Dillon, Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, Joey Logano, Ryan Newman, Daniel Suarez and Darrell “Bubba” Wallace Jr. The Coca-Cola Racing Family, which has been around for nearly 20 years, makes appearances and is featured in advertising, promotions and packaging.

“Our continued partnership with Coca-Cola is a product of a long history of successful collaboration,” said Steve Phelps, EVP and chief global sales and marketing officer, NASCAR. “Partnering with a global company like Coca-Cola puts NASCAR in front of a massive scope of consumers while providing our partners direct engagement with the most brand faithful fan base in sports.”

The extended relationship with ISC will continue Coca-Cola’s position as the leading soft drink pour across NASCAR-sanctioned tracks. Through partnerships with ISC and Speedway Motorsports, Inc., Coca-Cola will be refreshing fans at 21 race tracks in 2018.

“This renewed relationship highlights how committed Coca-Cola is to engage the most brand loyal fans in sports. Coca-Cola is deeply integrated across our sport, including track pouring rights, race entitlements and relationships with drivers – all adding up to a valued partnership,” said Daryl Wolfe, chief sales and partnership officer, NASCAR and ISC. “The company has been a longtime supporter of NASCAR, and we are thrilled to embark on the next expanded phase of our partnership.”

A loyal supporter of the U.S. Armed Forces, Coca-Cola honors and recognizes service members at race tracks annually, and in 2017, expanded its support as the presenting sponsor of NASCAR Salutes Refreshed by Coca-Cola. The six-week platform encapsulates the NASCAR industry’s collective expression of respect and gratitude of past and present members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Coca-Cola also partners with NASCAR on Troops to the Track, hosting service members from all military branches at race tracks during the season.

In 2013, Coca-Cola became the first three-time recipient of the prestigious NASCAR Marketing Achievement Award, emblematic of the brand who best utilizes its sponsorship to engage NASCAR fans.

  • Cody Coughlin Joins 2018 Lineup for GMS Racing

Cody Coughlin Joins 2018 Lineup for GMS Racing

STATESVILLE, N.C. (January 16, 2018)- Adding to the 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) lineup, GMS Racing officials announced today the addition of Cody Coughlin to the Statesville-based team. Climbing back behind the wheel of a Chevrolet for the first time since 2013 in Late Models, Coughlin will drive the No. 2 JEGS Chevrolet Silverado for his second full-time NCWTS season.

With 35 NCWTS starts under his belt already, including his first full-time season last year, Coughlin is poised to have his best NCWTS season yet. Ending 2017 with a career-best finish of third at ISM Raceway (formerly Phoenix Raceway), the 22-year-old has momentum on his side heading into his second full-time season.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join the GMS Racing family,” said Coughlin, “as well as be back running for Chevrolet. GMS is a team that has proven to be one of the teams to beat every time they unload at the race track and now I have the same opportunity. I can’t thank GMS Racing, Maury Gallagher and Mike Beam enough for this chance. I think we have the right tools and personnel in place with the No.2 team to run up front and contend for race wins every weekend.”

Looking to add veteran knowledge to Coughlin’s sophomore campaign, crew chief Jerry Baxter will call the shots atop the box this year for the No. 2 team. After a successful start with GMS Racing in 2017, including a win at the NCWTS season opener at Daytona International Speedway, Baxter’s distinguished career includes 10 wins, seven pole awards, 43 top-five and 78 top-10 finishes in 139 NCWTS starts.

“I’m more than ready to get the 2018 season underway,” said Baxter. “Last year we raced against Cody every weekend, so I have an idea of the type of driver he is. It will be even better to be able to work with him now firsthand. We have a good group of hard-working guys on the No. 2 that will definitely put us in the position to run well every time we’re at the track.”

Tune into the NextEra 250 at Daytona International Speedway on Friday, February 16th at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1 to see Coughlin hit the track for the first time with GMS Racing.

Justin Haley and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Return to GMS Racing for 2018

STATESVILLE, N.C. (January 15, 2018) – GMS Racing announced that Justin Haley would once again pilot the No. 24 Chevrolet Silverado in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) in 2018. Long-time sponsor Fraternal Order of Eagles will also rejoin the group as a primary sponsor throughout the season.

The 18-year-old returns to the team following a strong rookie season in which he earned three top-fives and 12 top-10 finishes in 21 starts. He also captured his first-career NCWTS pole award at Texas Motor Speedway in November, setting a new track qualifying record and becoming the youngest pole winner in track history.

Haley, who won the ARCA Racing Series event at Talladega Superspeedway and contended for the win in his NCWTS debut at the same track, will make his first start at Daytona International Speedway. In addition, Haley has yet to make a start at Atlanta Motor Speedway, but earned an average finish of 10.5 in eight 1.5-mile starts in 2017.

“We found a lot of success toward the end of the 2017 season, so there’s a good amount of momentum that we can carry over into this year,” said Haley. “The No. 24 team is working hard in the off-season to take us to that next level, to be able to keep running up front and improving week to week. There’s no reason we shouldn’t be competing for a championship when we get to Miami, and I couldn’t be more excited to be heading in that direction with GMS and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.”

Looking to build on the consistency from 2017, the No. 24 crew will be led by Kevin Bellicourt, now in his second season as crew chief with GMS and Haley.

“It’s been really encouraging to see the work that not only this team has done, but that Justin has put in over the off-season,” said Bellicourt. “From working in the gym to time on the simulator, he’s focused on getting himself prepared to make a run for the title. The team has put everything we’ve got behind him and we’ve watched him do the same. It feels like all the pieces are coming together at the right time.”

Haley and the No. 24 team will contend for GMS Racing’s third consecutive Daytona International Speedway season-opening win. Coverage will be broadcast live Friday, February 16th on FS1 and MRN at 7:30 p.m.

NASCAR Next Alumnus Dalton Sargeant to Join GMS Racing for 2018 Season

STATESVILLE, N.C. (January 12, 2018)- With the start of the 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season being only 35 days away, GMS Racing officials are proud to announce the addition of Dalton Sargeant to their driver lineup. Competing for Rookie of the Year honors this season, Sargeant will be the driver of the No. 25 GMS Racing Chevrolet Silverado.

Sargeant will move to the NCWTS full time after successful seasons competing in the ARCA Racing Series and NASCAR K&N Pro Series. The 19-year-old most recently recorded four wins, one pole award, 20 top-five finishes, 2016 ARCA Rookie of the Year honors, and a second-place finish in the 2017 ARCA Series championship standings. Sargeant also has 18 K&N Pro Series starts across both the West and East Series with one win, two pole awards, 10 top-five finishes and was selected to the 2015 NASCAR Next Class. Heading into the 2018 season, Sargeant has six previous NCWTS starts under his belt with two top-10 finishes, including a 10th-place finish in his debut at Bristol Motor Speedway.

“I’m really excited to be joining a championship-caliber team in GMS Racing for the 2018 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season,” said Sargeant. “Mike Beam and everyone at GMS Racing has put so much effort into this No. 25 team during the off-season and I can’t thank them enough for this opportunity. GMS Racing has put together an all-star team of people and equipment, plus had faith in me to drive and compete for wins. I’m looking forward to what we can accomplish in 2018. It’s always been a dream and a goal to compete at this level in NASCAR. I left a career and a life in Europe to compete against the best in NASCAR and today is that day. We have a full slate of things coming up as a team and I know we’re all really looking forward to getting on the track and beginning the season.”

Although Sargeant will be competing as a Sunoco Rookie of the Year candidate in 2018, the No. 25 Chevrolet Silverado will be led by a veteran crew chief. Doug Randolph joined GMS Racing in the off-season, bringing 17 years of experience as a crew chief across all three of NASCAR’s top three series. Randolph has worked with both Dave and Ryan Blaney, Sterling Marlin, Bobby Labonte, Brad Keselowski, Clint Bowyer, Scott Riggs and Jimmy Spencer. Randolph has 11 wins, 75 top-five and 149 top-10 finishes, including eleven pole awards as a crew chief in NASCAR competition.

“I can’t thank Mike Beam and GMS Racing enough for the opportunity to lead this race team in 2018,” said Doug Randolph. “I met Mike on my first job in racing as a mechanic for Junior Johnson’s team in 1982. We’ve worked together many times throughout our careers and have stayed friends along the way. He and Maury Gallagher have certainly given us all the resources we need to win races and championships. I’ve watched Dalton progress in his career for a while now. He’s been impressive and won in everything he’s driven, against tough competition for years. I’ve taken a lot of pride into developing drivers over the years, and the opportunity to work with Dalton at a race team like GMS Racing is something that I’m excited to be a part of.”

Additional information for Sargeant and the No. 25 GMS Racing team will be announced at a later date.

  • Driver Analysis: 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion Christopher Bell

Driver Analysis: 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Champion Christopher Bell

The 2017 season could not have been any better for the eventual champion Christopher Bell. Early on in the year he was up front and challenging for wins every week. With a strong Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota Tundra, it was not surprising to see him challenge for victories week in and week out.

Bell got his win early in the season at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the second race of the year. He collected poles at Kansas and Charlotte, finishing fourth and third, respectively, in those two races. However, a week later at Dover, Bell was collected in an unfortunate crash leaving him with a 25th place finish at the end of the day.

The following week at Fort Worth, Bell put that disappointing finish behind him and won by mere inches over Chase Briscoe. It was his second win of the season. If he did not feel comfortable with just that one win at Atlanta, Bell sure felt comfortable now, knowing that he would be racing for the championship if the Playoffs went well. It was a great victory for him and the No. 4 JBL Toyota Tundra entry.

“Well, it’s huge. We’ve been so fast throughout the entire year and all of our partners have done such a great job bringing really fast cars,” Bell said. “Rowdy Manufacturing chassis and everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing Engines, they just work so hard to bring really fast Tundras to the race track and I’m the lucky one who gets to drive them.”

After the wild finish at Texas, Gateway and Iowa saw him finish sixth and fifth. A week later, Bell was back to his winning ways at Kentucky even though he spun out early in the race. The victory was just as good a feeling for his team, after winning the week before at Texas.

“This is pretty special, man,” Bell said. “This is an extremely tough race for me. We had our ups and downs there and through practice yesterday, just kind of – practice didn’t really go smooth. We had such a good Toyota Tundra that I knew, I knew if the right circumstances came up we could do it and Rudy (Fugle, crew chief) did a great job on top of the pit box just getting me track position after I made a mistake there and spun out. Just really glad to be here.”

Bell continued his winning ways once again at Pocono. With already having four wins early in the season, he was the regular season champion in the Truck Series after the race was over at Chicago. At that point in the season, 2017 was already being great to him and the No. 4 Toyota Tundra team.

“It’s huge,” he said, “Thankfully, this year we were able to accumulate some points to have a little bit of a cushion going into the Playoffs and just really thankful to be here at Kyle Busch Motorsports driving this No. 4 SiriusXM Tundra and not just SiriusXM, but all of our partners at JBL, TRD, Toyota and everyone at Kyle Busch Motorsports. There is a whole group there that builds these Tundras and they do an excellent job and it really shows week in and week out.”

Just like in early season form at Atlanta, Bell started out the Playoffs with a bang by winning at Loudon. It was his fifth win of the season and it advanced him on to the Round of 6.

“It was really big. To be able to win the first race and now we can be more aggressive at Vegas and especially Talladega and try and win the race compared to how I did it last year and just kind of had to take my fifth through eighth place finishes and move on,” Bell said. “It’s just a credit to Rudy (Fugle, crew chief) and Kyle (Busch, owner) and everyone on this group – this team that I’ve got, man.”

With that win at Loudon, Bell continued to be consistent throughout the Playoffs. His worst finish in the championship hunt was eighth which occurred at Martinsville and Phoenix. Otherwise, he finished second at tracks such as Las Vegas, Talladega and a third at Fort Worth. During those races, Bell collected two poles at Talladega and Phoenix. By having such a strong season, he ultimately qualified for the Championship 4 for the second consecutive year.

Bell would be competing against tough challengers like 2016 champion Johnny Sauter, two-time champion Matt Crafton and Canada winner Austin Cindric. He knew it would not come easy for him and that he would have to bring the best of the best.

“I think everyone on this No. 4 JBL team is as prepared as we can be,” Bell said. “Overall, if you look back on the season, I think we’ve shown the most speed in the Truck Series, and week in and week out we’ve been the best team. I’ve always enjoyed Homestead and Rudy (Fugle, crew chief) has been really fast there the last few years. If we can just go out and focus on what has gotten us to this point, I think we should be in good shape. Regardless of the outcome, it’s been an amazing season.”

The day finally came, the race the Kyle Busch Motorsports No.4 team had been waiting for all season, the Championship 4 race at Homestead. Bell was the worst of the four Playoff drivers when it came to qualifying, as he would qualify 13th leaving him with a challenge to get up to the front fast.

When Stage 1 began, he worked his way up to first and won the first stage. Bell would stay there in Stage 2, but fell one spot short and finished second when Ben Rhodes ended up winning the stage. With 30 laps to go, he began to drive away from Sauter. Bell would eventually stay in the second position and win the 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship, finishing just one spot ahead of Sauter.

It was the first ever championship in NASCAR for Christopher Bell and the second Truck Series driver championship for Kyle Busch Motorsports. This was a great feeling for the No. 4 driver who came out of Norman, Oklahoma. It was a moment that Bell will remember forever.

“A dream come true just doesn’t even describe it,” Bell said.  “For me to be at KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) as long as I have and to go out a champion — that is something I’m really proud of. Really cool that we have our partners JBL here on the championship stage with us. They’ve been with me since day one of my Truck career and I’m really glad to have them here with us. Between JBL, Toyota, TRD (Toyota Racing Development), SiriusXM, DC Solar, everyone at KBM, man – these trucks are so good and they pay so much attention to all the detail into that goes into these things and that’s what makes these Tundras so fast. I’m just speechless.”

Winning the championship was very emotional for the 23-year-old.

“There are no words to describe what this means to me,” he said. “To be able to be here and to finish out my career at Kyle Busch Motorsports with the championship is something that I’m going to cherish for the rest of my life and, man, to be able to do it with JBL on the truck – they’ve been with me since day one and the start of my career. They were with me through last year and we had a struggle point there through the beginning and middle parts of last year and they stuck with me and believed in me and we were able to persevere and come away a champion a year later.”

After the final checkered flag of the season, Bell earned five wins, 15 top fives and 21 top 10 finishes with an average start of 4.9 and an average finish of 5.7. He also had two DNF’s and led 875 laps.

In 2018, Christopher Bell will not return to the Truck Series as he will be joining Joe Gibbs Racing driving the No. 20 Rheem Toyota Camry.

Bell can be found on social media pages. You can follow him on Twitter at @CBellRacing and on Instagram @CBellRacing.
