Spencer Boyd Captures Highest Career Finish in Talladega Debut

Talladega, AL (October 14, 2017) – With most of the focus on the Camping World Truck Series playoff picture, Spencer Boyd patiently managed the Talladgea draft to finish 13th, a career high. Boyd has spent the latter part of the season running in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for SS Green Light Racing in the No. 07, but had an opportunity to run his 3rd Truck race this year in DJ Copp’s No. 83.

“We had a conservative approach to this race,” Boyd said. “At this point in the season it is all about the playoffs, but for me it was about getting more experience. Copp Motorsports prepared a truck that was good in the outside lane for us and we were able to stick to our strategy. I’m super thankful for the opportunity that DJ gave me.”

Boyd would qualify 27th for fred’s 250 powered by Coca-Cola with 94 laps in front of him around the 2.66 mile track. It would only be 5 laps into the event though when there would be playoff implications with the No. 29 of Chase Briscoe being black flagged for an engine issue. As Stage One neared the end, the first caution of the race came out when the No. 47 of Fontaine and the No. 33 of Grala got together when trucks in front of them checked up. Johnny Sauter would take the Stage One win under yellow as Boyd was in 25th and the free pass position.

The No. 83 crew would put on four Goodyears and take a round out of the rear of the truck under yellow and Boyd would restart Stage Two in 23rd. The next 20 laps would be uneventful with Johnny Sauter again winning the stage and Boyd moving up one spot to 22nd.

The third and final stage would not be so uneventful. The third caution of the day involving Crafton, Nemechek, Rhodes, and Greenfield allowed Spencer to again be the recipient of the free pass. After taking right side tires and filling up with Sunoco race fuel, the No. 83 Grunt Style Silverado would be in 15th position with 35 laps to go. In the subsequent laps, Spencer would duck to the inside lane and take advantage of some green flags stops to race up to 6th while narrowly missing the big one that brought out the fourth yellow flag of the day.

In the closing laps of the race Spencer was as high as 4th and in the lead pack looking at 2 laps to go in overtime. As the pack came to the white flag, the No. 18 of Noah Gragson went high, squeezing Justin Haley and Johnny Sauter causing a chain reaction of accidents. Spencer was caught up in it despite ducking below the double yellow line, as the No. 63 of Bobby Gerhardt tried to avoid other wrecking trucks slamming into Boyd causing him to spin.

Parker Kligerman was declared the winner with Boyd able to drive his Chevy back to pit road earning a 13th place finish.

“I’m not going to lie, I love this type of racing,” an excited Boyd admitted. “I made some mistakes early in losing the draft, but by the end of the race I could see the air better. I felt comfortable running toward the front at the end of the race. Our strategy worked well, but wish we didn’t get caught up in the mess at the end as I like bringing a clean truck home to the shop. All in all, it was a great weekend with a solid finish for a small team and I got to enjoy a little Talladega Boulevard for the first time!”

The 13th-place finish in Boyd’s third start of NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition this season would be his personal best. His previous best was 17th in his Xfinity debut at Iowa Speedway in 2016. Boyd will return to SS Green Light Racing next week to race the No. 07 Grunt Style Camaro at Kansas Speedway on October 21, 2017.

  • Kligerman Wins Talladega Truck Race

    Kligerman Wins Talladega Truck Race

TALLADEGA, Ala. — Before the season started, at the Henderson Motorsports shop in Abingdon, Virginia, I asked NBC Sports analyst Parker Kligerman why he was taking a part-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series ride. His response was “Why the hell not?” Today I asked him if this win validated that response, he said it didn’t need validating because he’s having a hell of a lot of fun.

Getting a push down the backstretch from Grant Enfinger, Kligerman took the lead from Bell coming to the white flag. Entering Turn 1, Justin Haley made contact with Noah Gragson and Johnny Sauter, sending either Gragson or Sauter into Stewart Friesen and triggering the five-car wreck that ended the Fred’s 250 at Talladega Superspeedway.

“It was just crazy. Every move worked,” Kligerman said of his closing laps. “And it’s just sometimes, they’d click. Those last 10 laps, no matter if I went high and I’d separate a pack, or I’m trying to get the bump and the run. Every move just works.”

It’s his 12th victory in 68 career starts.

Bell finished second and Myatt Snider rounded out the podium.

Enfinger and Austin Cindric rounded out the top-five.

John Hunter Nemechek, Vinnie Miller, Clay Greenfield, Matt Crafton and Tyler Young rounded out the top-10.

    RACE SUMMARY

Bell led the field to the green flag at 1:16 p.m., but lost the lead immediately to Sauter, who led the first stage from start to finish and won it.

DJ Kennington and Cindric led during the first stage break, but Sauter took back the lead on the ensuing restart and led all the remaining laps of the second stage on his way to winning it.

The intensity picked up from the drop of the green for the final stage, with 48 laps to go. Snider edged out Bell at the line to take the lead with 47 to go. Sauter shoved Snider ahead of Bell, but Kligerman shoved Cody Coughlin to the front coming to the line with 46 to go. Kligerman went to the inside of Coughlin and took the lead with 45 to go. Friesen was shoved by Bell to the front down the backstretch with 43 to go.

On the restart, following a three-truck wreck in Turn 3, Kligerman got a push from Bell to the front around Friesen through Turn 1 35 to go.

A multi-truck wreck in the tri-oval with 23 to go set up the run to the finish.

    CAUTION SUMMATION

Caution flew for the first time on Lap 20 for a one-truck wreck exiting Turn 4. The second caution on Lap 42 was for the end of the second stage. A three-truck wreck in Turn 3 on Lap 55 brought out the third caution. Caution flew on Lap 71 for a multi-truck incident, coming to the start/finish line. The final caution flew in Turn 1 on the final lap, ending the race.

    NUTS & BOLTS

The race lasted one hour, 57 minutes and 18 seconds, at an average speed of 129.258 mph. There were 17 lead changes among 11 different drivers and six cautions for 27 laps.

Bell leaves with a 52-point lead over Sauter. Chase Briscoe and Kaz Grala fail to advance on in the Truck Series Playoffs.

  • Toyota NCWTS Talladega Christopher Bell Quotes

Toyota NCWTS Talladega Christopher Bell Quotes

    Toyota Racing – Christopher Bell
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS)
    Talladega Superspeedway – October 13, 2017

Kyle Busch Motor Sports driver Christopher Bell was made available to the media at Talladega Superspeedway:

CHRISTOPHER BELL, No. 4 Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
Can you share with us what your plans are for 2018?
“Yeah, it’s really exciting, actually, to be able to go and run full‑time in the XFINITY Series for Joe Gibbs Racing is ‑‑ obviously it’s a dream come true, and it’s really cool to be able to move up the ladder underneath the Toyota banner. I can remember I think it was Chili Bowl 2014, myself, Tyler Gibbs and Jack Irving all went and sat down, and I was coming off the USAC national midget driver championship, which was the first for Toyota, and Jack and Tyler sat down and kind of ‑‑ we were just talking about the future and how it was going to work out. Now a couple years later to be able to be moving up and going into the XFINITY Series with Toyota and Joe Gibbs Racing is a dream come true, and really thankful for the opportunities. It’s been great to be able to go from Keith Kunz Motorsports on the dirt side to Kyle Busch Motorsports in the late models, and then as well as the Truck Series, so I’ve been with great organizations, and it’s going to continue with Joe Gibbs.”

This year you’ve got all these wins coming into this race, but looking forward to next year, are you a little bit nervous? Are you worried about that? Are you ready for the next step in your career?
“I’m excited. One thing that Toyota has done a great job of is preparing me for the next stepping‑stone. Whenever I was running late models at Kyle Busch Motorsports, they were kind of trickling me into some truck races, and I think I got seven truck races that year before I went full‑time, and it worked out again this year where I’m going to have, I think, eight XFINITY races before I go full‑time next year, so that’s great seat time for me. I’m going to be able to be with the organization and kind of learn how they operate, and driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports, you already have somewhat of a feel for how they do things, and I think it’s a great fit and the perfect stepping‑stone.”

Christopher, you’ve made, I think, four XFINITY Series starts this year. From a competitive standpoint, how does that relate to the Truck Series when you’re out there?
“Well, the field is a lot deeper, that’s for sure. There’s a lot more quality cars in the XFINITY Series, and I mean, other than that, it’s still racing. Every step along the way you’re racing against professional race car drivers, and that goes back all the way to when I was racing USAC and World of Outlaws on the dirt side of things, you’re racing against professional race car drivers. It’s just another division. I feel like the cars are going to actually maybe even suit my driving style a little bit more than the trucks would. I’m excited, man. I can’t wait. Let’s go.”

Next weekend you’re going to run, return to the XFINITY Series, run Kansas, and then Texas, Phoenix, Homestead. How important is that stretch to get you ready for 2018?
“Well, like I said, Toyota has done a great job of preparing me for each step, and that’s kind of how it worked out with the Truck Series. I was able to do, I think, Vegas, Talladega, Texas, Homestead, the last couple races in the truck schedule before I went full‑time in the Truck Series. And same thing this year, I got a couple XFINITY races earlier in the year to get my feet wet, and then I’ve got a lot here to try and prepare me for next year. So it’s a great schedule that they’ve laid out for me, and I’m going to try and take everything I can get from these next couple XFINITY races that I can drive and try and learn everything and prepare myself as well as I can for next year.”

With the additional races that are in the XFINITY Series, what does that do to your sprint car Chili Bowl schedule?
“Well, I’ve done sprint car racing for 2017. There’s really no more that I can do. I do have one more midget race, Turkey Night that’s after Homestead on Thanksgiving Day. As far as other dirt stuff, the Chili Bowl, I’ll be at the Chili Bowl, of course, but yeah, that’s all I’ve got for the remainder of 2017.”

“I don’t know, we haven’t really talked too much about it. I see Jack is over there grinning. We haven’t talked too much about it. We’ll have to play it by ear.”

What does it mean for you to have such an investment from Toyota in your career?
“Well, as a kid growing up, I was just a dirt track racer, so there was really no feasible path to get to NASCAR, and then you see Larson, he went to Keith Kunz Motorsports driving for Toyota, and then unfortunately there wasn’t a path there for him, so he went to Ganassi and that route. But then from that point on, I was able to win the drivers’ championship, and they gave me an opportunity at Kyle Busch Motorsports. So to be able to be associated with Toyota through my entire young career has been a dream come true, and just thankful. I can’t say that enough how thankful I am that they’ve believed in me through the thick and thin. Last year I had a really ‑‑ not a great season, and then this year has been really great. They believed in me enough to give me another opportunity this year in the Truck Series, and I’m really thankful for that, and I’m thankful that we get to continue our partnership.

  • Tyler Young hoping for some superspeedway redemption at Talladega

Tyler Young hoping for some superspeedway redemption at Talladega

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Set to make his seventh NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start of the season, Tyler Young (@TylerYoung02) sets his sights on earning his first top-10 finish of the season in Saturday afternoon’s fred’s 250 powered by Coca-Cola at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

The last time Young participated in a superspeedway race, his fun lasted two laps after being swept into a multi-truck incident in the season-opening NextEra Energy Resources 250 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway.

For the past eight months or so, the Midland, Texas native has been left pondering what could have been on that February night.

But, there’s no more in relishing on the past as Young looks to steer his No. 02 Young’s Building Systems / Randco. Industries Co. Chevrolet to his second top-10 finish at the 2.66-mile superspeedway.

“I’ve been pumped about Talladega,” offered Young who has two previous starts at the historic Alabama race track. “Daytona was a real bummer for us, especially because we felt like we had a truck capable of contending for the win. But, since then we’ve brought Chad Kendrick aboard and he has a niche for plate racing and I’m hoping that his experience will lead our team even further in Saturday’s race.”

Running a limited schedule this season, the 26-year-old Young sees every race as an opportunity, but when it comes to restrictor plate racing, the Texan believes he has developed a craft that has allowed him to post two top-10 finishes in his last three superspeedway races.

Two years ago, at Talladega, Young qualified 18th and cleverly raced his way inside the top-15 then eventually the top-10 and contended for a strong finish but after being left without a solid drafting partner coming to the checkered flag, Young finished 10th, one of his two top-10 finishes during the 2015 season.

Four months later in February 2016, Young earned his career-best finish to date with an impressive sixth-place finish at Daytona.

“When it comes to plate racing, it’s a lot of patience and luck,” Young explained. “We’ve been fortunate at Young’s Motorsports to have good trucks when it comes to superspeedway racing, but negotiating through the big one has sometimes been our achilles heels – hopefully on Saturday we can be smart and have a good finish for the team.”

Young’s Motorsports heads to Talladega on the strength of a 11th place finish earned by Timothy Peters two weeks ago at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway. It was the team’s highest finish this season in a Chevrolet from the Young’s Motorsports stable.

Overall, the finish was a good morale boost for the team.

“Timothy did a great job for us at Las Vegas,” sounded Young who also serves as Young’s Motorsports team principal. “He brought a lot to the table as far as knowledge and feedback and in the end, I think that’s going to make our program stronger for places like Texas and Homestead.”

With the checkered flag drawing closer to signify the end of the 2017 season, Young says his team is leaving nothing on the table.

“We’ve been very thankful to have a year full of a lot of positives,” added Young. “With five races left including Talladega, it’s important for us to make the most of each race to propel us into a good off-season and an even better 2018!”

In 76 career NCWTS starts, Young holds four top-10 finishes to his credit with a career-best sixth at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February 2016. A sixth-place qualifying effort at Eldora Speedway in July 2015 is his best time trials effort to date. Young’s Motorsports has competed on the tour since 2012.

  • NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Preview-Talladega

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Preview-Talladega

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series heads to Talladega Superspeedway this weekend and it’s the final race in the Round of 8. Two drivers will be eliminated in competing for the playoffs after the race is over.

Currently, there are 32 trucks entered on the preliminary entry list.

Surprisingly, there have only been 11 races dating back to the first race in 2006, when NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin earned the win.

In the past five races, there were three different winners, while Timothy Peters, who will not be competing this weekend, has repeated in the past two races. The lowest a winner has come from is 24th back in 2013 set by Johnny Sauter and the highest starting spot winner was from the pole at least three times in 2006, 2007 and 2015, respectively.

Here’s a look at who we can expect to be a strong contender for the win this weekend.

      1. Johnny Sauter – Sauter is the best active driver statistically at Talladega. In five races, he has one win (2013), two top five and four top 10 finishes, but has one DNF in 2014. His average starting position is 14.0, while his average finishing position is 9.0. Anything can happen at Talladega, but Sauter might just pull off a win.
      2. Christopher Bell – Bell won’t have anything to worry about as he already is locked into the next round, but he’ll be fighting for some extra playoff points. In two races, he has a finish of 13th and sixth, respectively. Bell has an average finishing position of 9.5. Look for him to be up front on Saturday.
      3. Kaz Grala – No career starts for Grala at Talladega, but he has high expectations after becoming the youngest-ever winner at Daytona earlier this season. A win will certainly help him to move on to the next round as he sits below the cut line.
      4. Grant Enfinger – Enfinger just might be the spoiler in the playoffs Saturday afternoon. In last year’s race, he pulled off the win after leading for 45 laps. So if he ends up in victory lane at the end of the day, don’t find it surprising that the Alabama driver plays as the spoiler.
      5. Ben Rhodes – While his result from last year’s race may not look pretty, he is carrying momentum after his first career win at Las Vegas two weekends ago. He, along with others, will be fighting for stage points throughout the race.

There will be two practices scheduled for Friday afternoon at 12 p.m. ET and 2 p.m. ET both on FS1. Qualifying is slated for Saturday morning beginning at 10:30 a.m. ET on FS1.Race coverage begins on FS1 and MRN Radio at noon ET, with the green flag dropping at 1:22 p.m. ET.

    Season Stats
    18 starts, 2 wins, 9 top-fives, 15 top-10s

    Additional Info
    – The No. 21 team will utilize GMS chassis No. 129. Talladega will be the first outing for this GMS chassis.
    – Following a 10th-place showing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Sauter sits fourth in the NCWTS driver championship point standings leading into the final race of the Round of 8.

    Quote
“I think we can play the strategy game a little bit because the GMS trucks, especially as of late, on the superspeedways have just been phenomenally fast. Our truck at Daytona this year was the fastest speedway vehicle I’ve ever had in my career. If we can duplicate that or try to, we’ll be in a good position. Talladega’s got a little different complexion to the race than Daytona does, where I feel like it’s better to stay in line and be disciplined than be a hero and make moves. It’s definitely a wild card race; things can happen out of your control there.”

    Talladega Stats
Saturday will mark Haley’s first NCWTS start at Talladega Superspeedway.

    Season Stats
    16 starts, 2 top-fives, 10 top-10s

    Additional Info
    – Haley will pilot GMS chassis No. 127. This chassis was last run at Daytona International Speedway by Scott Lagasse (start: 14th, finish: 7th), but was also raced to second-place finish at Talladega last year by Spencer Gallagher.
    – Haley, who was not old enough to compete at Daytona earlier this year, made his first superspeedway start in the ARCA Racing Series in May. He took over the lead for a one-lap shootout and stayed out front to claim his first superspeedway victory.
    – Haley’s No. 24 team is eighth in the owner championship playoff standings, 15 points out of the final transfer spot.

    Quote
“The trucks at any superspeedway look very on edge, so putting myself in that bee’s nest is going to be a little different than the ARCA races, but obviously having a win anywhere is going to improve your confidence. I know GMS brings really fast superspeedway trucks they showed it this year at Daytona when we ran first through fourth for a while and qualified first, second and third. This is probably the race I’m looking forward to the most.”

    Quote
“Obviously it’s cool knowing that the last Superspeedway race we were able to get the pole and the win, but anything can happen in these types of races. You can have the fastest truck or be the best plate racer, but we’ve seen it time and time again in every series, that doesn’t guarantee you any sort of favorable finishing position. We’re looking at this race as a wild card, just like everyone else is. Leaving Daytona without any damage, we’re able to bring the same truck with us to Talladega, which is a plus. The No. 33 STEALTH team will bring me a fast Chevy, it’ll be up to me to keep us out of trouble and up front at the end.”
