Kyle Busch Rallies from Speeding Penalty to Win Bristol Truck Race

BRISTOL, Tenn. — While Kyle Busch was the dominant driver, he had to overcome a speeding penalty, which he did with ease, ran down and passed Matt Crafton, and even held him off on an overtime restart to win at Thunder Valley.

Busch was busted for speeding under the second stage break caution and restarted at the tail-end of the field on the ensuing restart. He made quick work of the field, catching and passing Crafton for the race lead with 33 laps to go to score his 49th career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory in 140 career starts.

Crafton finished second and John Hunter Nemechek rounded out the podium.

Grant Enfinger and Ben Rhodes rounded out the top-five.

Johnny Sauter, Christopher Bell, Parker Kligerman, Austin Cindric and Brandon Jones rounded out the top-10.

    RACE SUMMARY

Busch led the field to the green flag at 10:44 p.m. He led every lap of the first stage on his way to winning it on Lap 56.

Cindric took the lead under the caution and restarted the race leader. A lap after the Lap 64 restart, however, Crafton got to his corner panel and loosened him. Taking the lead on Lap 65. But Busch ran him down, and lapped traffic allowed him to pass Crafton exiting Turn 2, retake the lead and win the second stage on Lap 121.

He was busted for speeding, which set up the run to the finish.

    NUTS & BOLTS

The race lasted one hour, 13 minutes and five seconds, at an average speed of 88.829 mph. There were six lead changes among four different drivers and five cautions for 31 laps.

  • Johnny Sauter Looking To Rebound At Bristol

Johnny Sauter Looking To Rebound At Bristol

Since the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Iowa Speedway back in June when Johnny Sauter finished second, the GMS Racing driver has been up and down in the past four races. At Kentucky Speedway, he finished ninth, while he finished 23rd at Eldora Speedway. He had a solid run at Pocono Raceway where he finished fifth. However, Sauter’s points lead started to slip after Eldora. He eventually lost the lead at the Pocono race weekend due to Christopher Bell winning the race and taking the points lead. Bell is currently the leader by 37.

Sauter had a disappointing recent outing at Michigan International Speedway, where he finished 18th due to a flat tire late in the going and was unable to make up any of the ground. But if he wants to turn his season around, Bristol Motor Speedway just might be the place on Wednesday night. Sauter made his Bristol Truck Series debut back in 2003 driving for Christopher Beckington, where he started 23rd and finished 25th.

Sauter has competed at Bristol in the Truck Series full time at Bristol since 2009. Including that start in 2003, he has four top fives and five top 10 finishes, with a best finish of second coming in 2011. Since 2013, Sauter upped his game as his finishes came inside the top 10. He’s looking to notch that elusive win at Bristol and take back the point lead.

“Bristol (Motor Speedway) is one of those tracks that I look forward to every year,” Sauter said. “I’ve never won there but that style of driving and the work that goes into these short track races is what I love. There’s always racing going on no matter where you’re running in the field and it really is a driver’s track. You can be completely comfortable with your truck and how it gets through the corners but if you aren’t completely focused on your job as a driver, on making passes and avoiding mistakes then you can get caught up in something really quick.”

    Toyota NASCAR Bristol Advance 8.15.17

    Toyota NASCAR Bristol Advance
    Week of August 14 – 20

Toyota Drivers Hit Stride: With only three races remaining in the regular season, Toyota drivers have hit their stride by winning four of the last six races (Kentucky, New Hampshire, Pocono, Watkins Glen) in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS). Although Camry driver and current points leader Martin Truex Jr. has long since solidified a spot in the 2017 NASCAR playoffs with four wins this season, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch recently secured victories to join Truex in the championship run. After debuting its newly redesigned 2018 Toyota Camry race car to start 2017, Toyota drivers have captured the Camry’s 100th MENCS victory at Pocono (July 29) and led a season-high 3,089 laps (50 percent of laps run). In the last six races alone, Toyota drivers have accounted for 81 percent of laps led. The Toyota contingent heads to Bristol on a high, returning to the short track where the manufacturer has eight MENCS wins, including two by Matt Kenseth, who hopes to secure a spot in the playoffs.

Outside Looking In: Three Toyota drivers have all but secured a spot in the 2017 playoffs with wins this season – Busch (one win), Hamlin (one), and Truex (four), while three Camry drivers remain on the cusp. Kenseth is currently ninth in points to sit above the playoff cutoff, while rookies Erik Jones and Daniel Suárez must maintain points and capture a victory to make championship runs. Jones most recently tied his career-best finish of third at Michigan, while Kenseth and Suárez both had four-consecutive top-10 finishes after Watkins Glen, but accidents at Michigan ended their streaks. At Bristol, Kenseth owns the highest driver rating (100.2) and has four-career wins at the ‘Last Great Coliseum,’ including two in a Toyota Camry. Jones is also no stranger to Bristol’s victory lane, where he has two NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) wins, including one earlier this year.

Triple the Fun: Busch takes on the ‘Last Great Coliseum’ across all three national series this week, competing in the No. 46 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) Kyle Busch Motorsports Tundra, the No. 18 NXS Joe Gibbs Racing Camry and the No. 18 MENCS Joe Gibbs Racing Camry. In 2010 at Bristol, Busch became the first driver to sweep all three national series races in a single race weekend and continues to be the only driver to accomplish the triple win in NASCAR history. The last time Busch attempted to sweep Bristol, he came up just short in fall 2015 when he collected second, a win and eighth-place result in the NCWTS, NXS and MENCS races, respectively. Should Busch or multiple Toyota drivers sweep Bristol, it will be the sixth weekend in 2017 that Toyota has swept, including Kansas Speedway, Kentucky Speedway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Pocono Raceway/Iowa Speedway and Watkins Glen International.

Youth In Numbers: As youth continues to dominate the NASCAR conversation, Toyota proudly boasts a number of drivers under the age of 25 across all three national series. While Cup rookies Jones (21 years old) and Suárez (25) compete in their first year of MENCS competition, Matt Tifft (21) holds strong in the NXS and six drivers make up NCWTS competition. Tifft most recently captured a career-best, third-place finish at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and heads to Bristol where he has two previous NXS starts. Two-year NCWTS ‘veteran’ and up-and-coming driver Christopher Bell (22) leads the series points standings, while Ben Rhodes (20), Ryan Truex (25) and Cody Coughlin (21) are sixth, seventh and 13th, respectively. Kyle Busch Motorsports newcomer Noah Gragson (19) is also competing in his first season, while Harrison Burton (16) will make his Bristol debut.

Staying Connected: You can follow Toyota Racing on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and online at www.toyotaracing.com. For media images, please visit www.toyotaracingmedia.com.

Toyota at Bristol – Notes & Numbers:

Kyle Busch has the most laps led in the MENCS at Bristol among active drivers –and the ninth most in Cup history – with 1,960 circuits led. The next closest active competitor is Matt Kenseth with 1,572 laps.  Busch and his brother Kurt Busch are tied for the most Cup wins at Bristol among active drivers with five.

  • Enfinger’s Season After 13 Races

    Enfinger’s Season After 13 Races

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Grant Enfinger’s first full season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series has him just on the outside, vying for a playoff spot, with three races remaining in the 2017 regular season.

Ask him how he’d rate his season, he’d say, “it depends on where in the season you ask me.”

“If you’re asking me right now, probably a C,” he said. “We’ve been an A at certain parts of the season, and we’ve been an F at certain parts of the season.”

His season started with him pushing teammate Ben Rhodes with two laps to go in the NextEra Energy Resource 250 at Daytona International Speedway. Exiting Turn 2, Rhodes got loose, turned down into teammate Matt Crafton and triggered a 12-truck wreck. Enfinger wound up 16th.

He rebounded the following week with an eighth-place finish at Atlanta Motor Speedway but was a non-factor in a 17th-place finish at Martinsville Speedway.

After an 11th  place at Kansas Speedway, Enfinger went on a run of five top-10 finishes and four top-fives. That run consisted of a seventh at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a bottom-step podium finish at Dover International Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway, a fifth at Gateway Motorsports Park and a fourth at Iowa Speedway.

“We got through the first three or four races and weren’t where we really wanted to be, and then we started to gain a lot of momentum, and had some really good finishes and had some really good trucks,” he continued.

This five-race hot streak came to an end when he collided with teammate Rhodes, only half a lap into the second stage of the Buckle Up In Your Truck 225 at Kentucky Speedway.

Enfinger bounced back with a fourth-place finish at Eldora Speedway, bringing him to his highest points position of the season to date.

After finishes of 13th at Pocono Raceway and eighth at Michigan International Speedway, he now sits seventh in points, 14 back of teammate Rhodes, who currently occupies the final playoff spot.

Doing so won’t be easy, given that, as he notes, his team is without the consistency that carried them for the aforementioned five-race stretch.

“In the last couple of races, we’ve struggled,” Enfinger added. “We just haven’t had the finishes we’ve needed, but we’re looking to get back on track here at Bristol.”

    Quote
“I love Bristol (Motor Speedway). I mean, I think everyone loves Bristol. It’s got to be one of the best tracks out there. I’ve got quite a few laps around that place and have had good runs there too. What’s interesting about Bristol, that makes it so difficult, is because you’re on asphalt and going so fast through the banking, the closing rate is crazy fast. You have to always be ultra-focused on what’s ahead to make sure you stay out of trouble. I really can’t wait to get back.”
