    GMS Racing NCWTS Eldora Preview

    JOHNNY SAUTER
    No. 21 Allegiant Chevrolet Silverado

    Eldora Stats
    4 starts, 1 top-10

    Additional Info
    – Sauter will pilot chassis no. 047 which he raced to a 13th-place finish at Eldora last year after starting from the 8th position.
    – Sauter continues to lead the driver and owner championship point standings by 28 points after the 10th race of the season. He has one win and 10 playoff points.

    Quote
“Eldora is a little bit of a different situation, especially for a guy like me that’s raced asphalt his whole life. I’ve been to a couple of dirt races throughout my lifetime, but I’ve always been an asphalt guy. I have fun at Eldora. I think it’s a fun place and obviously a good atmosphere with a lot of great race fans. But for me it’s just a place where I haven’t figured it out quite yet.

I’ve had some decent runs [at Eldora] but for some reason got tore up towards the middle stages of the race. I guess my mindset going there is just to have fun, first and foremost. I think if we do everything right, if we can stay out of trouble, hopefully we’ll be in contention at the end of that thing.

It’s sort of a survival state, but Eldora’s also a place where if you have a win early in the season and you’ve had some good runs going, you can kind of just go and enjoy. It’s only one race on the schedule, but it’s still a race, nonetheless, and you want to put your best foot forward every week.”

    JUSTIN HALEY
No. 24 Fraternal Order of Eagles Chevrolet Silverado

    Eldora Stats
Haley will be making his first NCWTS start at Eldora Speedway.

    Additional Info
    – The No. 24 team will utilize GMS chassis no. 021, the same chassis raced to the win by Kyle Larson at Eldora in 2016.

    – 18-year-old Haley started his racing career on dirt, competing in 600cc sprints for three years. He was ranked Indiana’s No. 1 600cc sprint driver in 2014. He ran second in the Tulsa Shootout, continuing his dirt career as he transitioned to asphalt racing.

    – Haley won the ARCA Racing Series event at the Illinois State Fairgrounds, his first ARCA start on dirt.

    – Started first and won the Open Wheel Modified race at County Line Raceway on Saturday night – his first time competing with Lethal Chassis.

    – Haley has earned five consecutive top-10 finishes and a career-best third place finish at Kentucky.

    – The Winamac, Ind., native is 12th in the driver championship point standings after missing the first two races of the season due to NASCAR’s age restriction.

    Quote
“I grew up racing in Indiana where there are a lot of short tracks that are dirt. We went out and bought an open wheel mini sprint and raced it around four or five tracks. We ventured out to the Tulsa Shootout and ran second, and I’ve just kind of been playing around in dirt ever since.

Obviously being in a truck at Eldora is going to be a lot different than what I’ve been used to. These trucks are very heavy with quite a bit of motor, so I don’t know what to expect until I get out there. You can run all the simulator laps and talk to all the veterans and all the dirt aces that you want, but until you get on track and run your practice laps you just don’t know. The surface will change all through the night, so every time you get out there it’s going to be a different story, but I think we’ll adapt pretty quick.

This isn’t the first time I’ve had to go back and lean on my dirt experience; we kind of had to the do the same last year for the ARCA race at Springfield and it worked out pretty well for us. Add to that that I have Kyle’s truck from last year, so it’s a little added boost to team morale and coming off a third-place finish at Kentucky is good motivation for my guys.”

    KAZ GRALA
No. 33 15-40 Connection Chevrolet Silverado

    Eldora Stats
Kaz will be making his first NCWTS start at Eldora Speedway this weekend.

    Additional Info
    – Kaz will pilot chassis no. 004 this weekend. This chassis was raced last year at Eldora by Ben Kennedy, where he qualified 17th and finished 11th.

    – Having never raced on dirt before, Kaz ran a dirt modified twice at 311 Speedway in Pine Hall, NC, as well as at Friendship Motor Speedway in Elkin, NC, to prepare for the NCWTS race at Eldora.

    – After a 24th-place finish at Kentucky Speedway, Kaz is currently 10th in the driver point standings, with one win to his name.

    Quote
“I like watching dirt racing, but I don’t know much about it. I can guarantee you that I’ll be having a blast the entire race though. I’ve been in a dirt car a couple times, not much, but it was the most fun I’ve had in a racecar. I just hope that I can catch on to whatever it takes to go fast at Eldora. It’s certainly not like any other track we race at. I’m looking forward to it though.”

  • Camping World Truck Series Preview – Eldora

Camping World Truck Series Preview – Eldora

After a week off, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns to action for a mid-week showdown on dirt at the famed Eldora Speedway Wednesday night.

There are thirty-four entries on the preliminary entry list.

This will be a tough race for many of the rookies. It will take them awhile to adapt to the dirt. Nonetheless, experience pays off and this will fall right into the hands of the dirt track stars.

Since its inaugural event in 2013, there have been four different winners in the last four races. Let’s take a look at who has the best shot of winning this year’s Eldora Dirt Derby 150.

    1. Christopher Bell – Bell is the defending winner of this race. Other stats include two top fives and two top ten finishes, with a 1.5 average finish. Bell has also competed in some dirt races after Kentucky, picking up a USAC win, an All Star Sprints win and a World of Outlaw Series win at Eldora this past weekend. Oh, and Bell won the Midget Chili Bowl earlier this year. So yeah, expect Bell to be up front.
    2. Rico Abreu – Abreu is back for a one race deal with Thorsport Racing. He is a dirt track standout star with more than 20 dirt track wins. Abreu also has a 2015 Chili Bowl win on his resume. At Eldora in his only Truck Series start, he has one top five with a third place finish in 2016. Expectations will be high for this dirt track superstar.
    3. Ken Schrader – The 62-year-old veteran is a dirt track specialist. With championships in the USAC Silver Crown and Sprint Car Series, Schrader has numerous dirt track wins. He has competed in the Truck Series at Eldora since 2014. In that time, he has one top five and finishes of 11th and 12th, respectively. Schrader also won the first ever heat race in 2013 and won a heat race the last two years.
    4. Matt Crafton – Crafton has competed in all four races at Eldora. During that time, he had four top 10 finishes, with an average finish of 9.0.
    5. Bobby Pierce – Pierce is another favorite when it comes to dirt track racing, especially the last few years, even though the results might not show it. In the last two years that Pierce has competed at Eldora, he battled for the win in the late going. In the 2015 race, he came up one spot short and finished second to race winner Christopher Bell. Last year, he was competing for the win with Cup star Kyle Larson, until he crashed on lap 126, ending his day with a disappointing 25th place finish. Will the third time be the charm for Pierce?

There will be two practices Tuesday, with the first practice at 7 p.m. ET followed by the final practice at 9 p.m. ET. Single Truck vehicle qualifying is slated for 5 p.m. ET on FS1. Qualifying heat races are scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS2 with the Eldora Dirt Derby to cap everything off at 9:30 p.m. ET on Fox Business Channel and MRN Radio.

Young’s Motorsports to field two Truck Series entries at Eldora Speedway

ROSSBURG, Ohio – Officials from Young’s Motorsports confirmed today that they will field two trucks for the upcoming NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) Eldora Dirt Derby at Eldora Speedway on July 19.

Announced Thursday, newcomer and Australian sprint car driver Max Johnston will drive the team’s flagship No. 02 Chevrolet Silverado in his series debut with partner support from BRANDT, a leading agriculture retailer and manufacturer of agricultural specialty products.

Sheldon Creed will drive the team’s second entry, the No. 20 United Rentals Chevrolet for his second consecutive Truck Series race at Eldora Speedway. Creed, a native of Alpine, Calif. is a veteran of Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series, Stadium Super Trucks and the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East.

Among the accolades for the 19-year-old driver include two back-to-back championships in the Stadium Super Truck Series in 2015 and 2016, an X-Games gold medalist in Stadium Super Trucks in 2015 and a former Dakar Rally competitor.

In addition to Trucks, Creed has competed in the Stadium Super Truck Series, NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West, ARCA Racing Series and Trans Am Series this season making him one of the most diversified drivers in the field.

Veteran crew chief Chad Kendrick will guide Johnston for his NCWTS debut, while current truck chief Andrew Abbott will call the shots for Creed in the 150-lap race.

“We are very proud and excited to field two trucks for Eldora,” said Young’s Motorsports team principal Tyler Young. “Young’s Motorsports prides itself on bringing strong and competitive race vehicles to the track and the opportunity to bring two trucks to one of the most anticipated races of the year is really a chance for us to shine.

“Both Max and Sheldon have been successful in their respective racing series on dirt and Sheldon has been to Eldora before – so we’ll be leaning on him to help guide Max if he has any questions. The trucks look good and we’re proud to represent great corporations like BRANDT and United Rentals.”

Johnston who will have additional support Australian distribution partners BARMAC, a division of Amgrow Australia Pty Ltd, and GLOBE Growing Solutions says he is grateful for the opportunity to compete for Young’s Motorsports at Eldora.

“I’m very thankful to have the opportunity to race for Young’s Motorsports and BRANDT at Eldora Speedway,” said Johnston. “This is a good team who has the capabilities of running well and can guide me to a good finish on Wednesday night.

“A good night would be to see the checkered flag. A great night would be a top-10 finish for BRANDT, Amgrow and GLOBE who have allowed me this opportunity of a lifetime.”

Creed, vastly earning the nickname “The Showstopper” looks to improve on his 16th place finish from Eldora last year and believes Young’s Motorsports will give him the opportunity to do so.

“I’m glad to have another shot at Eldora,” said Creed, who drives for MDM Motorsports in K&N East and ARCA competition. “Hopefully, we can get our No. 20 United Rentals Chevrolet dialed in and have a good handle on our truck on Tuesday night that will carry over to qualifying, the heat races and the feature on Wednesday night.”

Wednesday night’s race at Eldora Speedway will mark the second time since their inception in 2012 that the team has fielded two-full race length entries in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series since the season-finale at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway with drivers Scott Lagasse Jr. and Patrick Staropoli last November.

Ford Performance NASCAR: Chase Briscoe Teleconference Transcript

FORD PERFORMANCE NASCAR NOTES AND QUOTES
    Date: Tuesday, July 11, 2017
Event: Eldora Dirt Derby (NASCAR Teleconference)
Series: NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
Location: Eldora Speedway (half-mile clay oval)

Ford Performance Development Driver Chase Briscoe, driver of the No. 29 Cooper Standard Ford F-150 for Brad Keselowski Racing, joined today’s NASCAR teleconference in advance of next week’s Camping World Truck Series Eldora Dirt Derby at Eldora Speedway.

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 29 Cooper Standard Ford F-150 — Chase had early success during his rookie campaign two runner-up finishes, two top 10s in the first ten races. Chase, you’re a third generation dirt racer from the neighboring state of Indiana. Take us through how it feels to return to your roots as you prepare to make your NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Eldora. “It’s awesome. This is the one track I’ve been looking forward to more than any. It’s going to be nice to finally get to Eldora, I’ve been going there ever since I was little. Never got to actually race there. My dad never wanted to take me there because it was dangerous in a sprint car and we only had one motor growing up. So it was tough. But never thought my first laps were going to be in a pickup truck, but definitely excited. Eldora for a dirt guy is Daytona and Indianapolis. Definitely going to be an honor to run there finally.”

Chase, this is your first time at Eldora. In a race truck, it’s a lot different than like a modified. So give us your dirt background and the excitement of going to Eldora. “Yeah, my whole dirt background has been 410 non-winged sprint cars and a couple midget races here and there. But just having dirt experience in anything is certainly going to help I think just because you know what the track is doing, you can tell just by reading it and you just know that feel that you need on dirt as far as side bite and forward bite goes. And just having sprint car background, obviously the truck’s going to be a lot slower than the sprint car and that always helps when you feel like you’re in slowing motion. It’s going to be a great race. Obviously, Bell is going to be one to beat. Rico’s going to be good. But Bobby Pierce and guys like Chris Wyndham who is a really good USAC sprint car driver and I think there’s going to be a couple guys that surprise you. I think normally at Eldora you see guys rise to the top but also seems like the normal truck guys pick it up pretty soon.”

Chase, you guys both have dirt backgrounds. I’m curious if you think there should be maybe one more dirt race maybe during the playoffs just so you can have all tracks a part of this deal. If so, and you do feel that way, which tracks would you want to see added first? “I’d be all for it. I think obviously for me and Christopher, both, I think we don’t have near as much pavement experience as most of the guys. It’s nice to go to a racetrack where we have an advantage. If we could do that in the playoffs. I certainly think it would be awesome. But there’s a lot of tracks I think that could host it. Obviously Knoxville would be one, I think, just from a seating standpoint and the track size standpoint would be good. And I think you could even go all the way to Charlotte Motor Speedway with it being out there real close. So there’s tons of dirt tracks out there. You can throw Lawrenceburg into the mix, as well. That would be really good. But I’d be all for having it in the playoffs, that’s for sure.”

Chase, you mentioned that your dad didn’t want you racing on Eldora because it was so dangerous. What makes Eldora different from other dirt tracks?
“Yeah, Eldora, in general, it’s so fast. And it seems like it’s a self-cleaning racetrack where when guys do start flipping it seems like you can’t get out of their way. Like I said, it’s so fast it’s hard to slow down. And that was one of the things my dad really didn’t want me going and doing. If we had a different motor situation we certainly would have did it but with our situation we were never running for points in USAC or anything so we just kind of stayed away from it. Just listening to the teleconference, it’s very interesting and very obvious, both of you are loving this idea of Eldora and maybe some of the veterans in the series are kind of a little bit more weary and have to kind of prepare for it. How aware are you two of the fact that this is kind right up your alley? And just what I was saying earlier, for me this being my second year really on pavement, everywhere I go is kind of a disadvantage I feel like because I don’t know what the track’s doing or how it’s changing, where when we go to the dirt track I can see what the track’s doing. I know what the feeling’s going to be when the track’s going away where a lot of these guys that grew up around pavement they don’t know that. For us obviously we’re the highest guy right now without a win but we really do want to win and secure our way in. We feel like this is a really good place for it to happen.”

  • Four Takeaways From The Buckle Up 225 At Kentucky

Four Takeaways From The Buckle Up 225 At Kentucky

The 10th race of the 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series took place at Kentucky Speedway this past Thursday night. There were some drivers/teams who had an up and down night. Here are my four takeaways from the Buckle Up In Your Truck 225 at Kentucky.

    1. Christopher Bell continues his strong season. Bell collected his third win of the season and fifth of his career. He now has seven top fives and nine top-10 finishes this season. Before Kentucky, he was sitting 42 points behind point leader Johnny Sauter. Now after his win, Bell is 28 points behind. After the off weekend, there will be six races left before the playoffs begin. Bell will be looking to cut into Sauter’s points lead. He could lock up another win this season, as Bell is the defending race winner at Eldora, which is the next scheduled race on the circuit.
    2. John Hunter Nemechek finished a disappointing 18th after two consecutive wins. Needless to say, this was a race to forget about for Nemechek. He and eventual race winner, Bell, were battling side by side for the lead late in the going. However, Nemechek had to pit after getting right side damage with 15 laps to go, thus ending any hopes for going three in a row. He now sits eighth in the points standings. Hopefully, sponsorship keeps up for the rest of the season and Nemechek can continue his run to the championship battle.
    3. Air Titans/Track officials/NASCAR did a great job with the weather. NASCAR and Kentucky Speedway had been battling off and on rain showers all day/evening at Kentucky. With pop up rain showers continuing through the evening, it looked like all was lost. However, the Air Titans and the new drain off area did their jobs and were able to get the race in a little bit past 10 p.m. ET.
    4. Thorsport Racing continues its up and down season. If Thorsport wants to be in the championship battle at Homestead, they’re going to have to kick it up a notch starting at Eldora.  So far in 2017, Cody Coughlin has no top fives or top-10 finishes. Matt Crafton only has two top fives and six top-10 finishes and no wins. By this time last year, Crafton already had two wins and was locked into The Chase. For Ben Rhodes, after coming up short at Kansas due to a blown engine, his season has been somewhat fair with three top-fives and five top-10 finishes. To add on to that, he’s had two DNF’s with the last one coming in Kentucky. This team is going to have to need a win soon in order to be a strong championship threat.
  • NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rankings – Kentucky

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Rankings – Kentucky

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series took center stage at Kentucky Speedway Thursday night. Barring a three-hour rain delay, it was an action filled race. Here are the power rankings following Kentucky.

    1. Christopher Bell – While Bell was the dominant truck throughout the race, it did not come without issues. On lap 28, Bell took a spin in turn 3 bringing out the second caution. Bell had another issue in Stage 2, by being involved in a wreck on lap 43, but came away with no damage. He rebounded by the end of Stage 2 to finish sixth. In the remaining laps of the race, Bell swapped the lead with John Hunter Nemechek until he took the lead for good on lap 114. He eventually held off a hard charging Brandon Jones with just a few laps remaining to score his third win of the year.

“This is pretty special man,” Bell said. “This is an extremely tough race for me. We had our ups and downs there and through practice yesterday.” “We had such a great Toyota Tundra that I knew, I knew if the right circumstances came up we could do it and Rudy (Fugle) did a great job on top of the pit box just getting me track position after I made a mistake there and spun out.”

    2. Brandon Jones – Jones’s race came with issues as well. After starting sixteenth, Jones slipped back to finish seventh in Stage 1 and ninth in Stage 2. However, on lap 115, Jones and Ryan Truex made contact to bring out the last caution. It took him several laps to rebound, but he challenged for the win and eventually settled for second behind race winner Christopher Bell.

“Yeah, I’m dying for a win right now for sure,” Jones said. “I was trying everything I could to get to the 4 (Christopher Bell) at the end. Eventually, I finally just started holding my line and you see him trying to move around stuff and try to mess us up a little bit. It was all fun and games for sure. I enjoyed it. It was a great start so far.”

    3. Justin Haley – Haley made his fourteenth career start last night and a career-best third. After starting 10th, Haley had a solid Stage 1 finish by finishing sixth. During Stage 2, Haley led only four laps to finish third. Haley eventually held on to finish where he finished in Stage 2, third.

“We had a really good night in the No.24 Fraternal Order of Eagles Chevy,” Haley said. “We knew track position was going to be key and Kevin (Bellicourt, Crew Chief) worked out great strategy for us.”

    4. Noah Gragson – Gragson had a solid night at Kentucky. After starting eleventh, Gragson finished just two spots ahead in Stage 1 as the truck needed adjustments to get to Gragson’s liking. When Stage 2 began, Gragson started second and assumed the lead on lap 41 to win his first ever stage of his career. However, issues came in Stage 3. Gragson brought out a caution on lap 77 for a collision between him and Austin Cindric but started to work his way to the top. He was up to seventh with 10 laps to go, before eventually finishing in fifth place.

“We led some laps during the second stage and were in a really good position running seventh to start the third stage,” Gragson said. “I just made a rookie mistake down there running the apron. Not running this track before, I didn’t know there was a bump there and I had a little bit of wheel into it down there in the front stretch and spun out.”

    5. Parker Kligerman – Kligerman has been solid recently in the truck series in 2017. Before Kentucky, Kligerman had only competed in three races and scored just one top 10 coming at Charlotte. Kligerman started in the 30th position after qualifying was rained out. While he did not finish in the top 10 in the first two stages, circumstances worked out for him and he came home to finish seventh, his best finish of the year.

“Glad we had a solid night and we will take this and keep building on runs like this,” Kligerman said. “Good momentum going into our next few races.”

Next up: The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series takes a week off, before heading to the famed Eldora Speedway on July 19.

  • Cody Coughlin Nabs Top-15 Finish At Kentucky

Cody Coughlin Nabs Top-15 Finish At Kentucky

Cody Coughlin was able to nab a top-15 finish in Thursday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Kentucky Speedway.

In the first stage, Coughlin finished in the 20th position after running seventh earlier in the race. In the second stage, he improved his finishing position to sixteenth.

In the remaining laps during the final stage, Coughlin was inside the top 10 but fell back quickly after his engine let go on the back stretch. Nonetheless, he was able to get to the start/finish line to finish 15th in the Buckle Up In Your Truck 225.

“That was a bit weird, I had no warning that was going to happen until the engine just let go,” Coughlin said. “It’s disappointing because we had another top-10 finish within our grasp. It was fun racing up there for much of the night. It was certainly wild at times. I’m glad the rain stopped and we were able to get this race in.”

This was Coughlin’s sixth top-15 finish of his career and his fourth this year.

Coughlin sits 13th in the driver standings after Kentucky.

SPARTA, Ky. — An eight-place finish by Matt Crafton and 15th by Cody Coughlin salvaged what almost turned into a rotten night for ThorSport Racing after three-quarters of their stable, including Crafton, were involved in a multi-truck wreck early in the second stage of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Buckle Up In Your Truck 225 at Kentucky Speedway.

Entering Turn 3 on the lap 42 restart, first stage winner Ben Rhodes was running below the No. 45 of TJ Bell when he got loose and spun out. He did roughly a 135° spin before hitting Bell with his left-rear corner, sending him up the track and into the path of Crafton, who made slight contact with the wall.

After Rhodes made contact with Bell, his truck did another half spin before pounding the wall right-rear first. Teammate Grant Enfinger, who made the choice to go high to avoid the spinning Rhodes when he was still on the bottom, slammed into his rear-end.

“I was underneath the 4 (Christopher Bell) trying to make a move. Then I saw him start to come down on me so I started backing out, and as we were going down to the groove we just all ran out of room,” Rhodes said. “I was trying to give everybody as much room as I could. Just unfortunate. I know all the restarts everybody was going as hard as they can. They were four-wide in front of me, so I was trying to do what I could with what I had. Just unfortunate we couldn’t come out a little bit better for our Safelite team. We had a lot of people here tonight to watch the race. Sorry I let them down. Just a big mistake on my part. Miscalculated it, and just need to re-evaluate our situation this year and try to get us in the playoffs.”

Crafton leaves Kentucky fourth in points, 89 back of Johnny Sauter, with Rhodes and Enfinger tailing him in fifth and sixth. Coughlin leaves 13th in points.
