MDM Motorsports NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Preview: Charlotte Motor Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 18, 2017) – The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season is in full swing as MDM Motorsports prepares for their fifth race of the season on Friday, May 19. NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) driver Brandon Jones will pilot the No. 99 Roland Chevrolet Silverado in the N.C. Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway located in Concord, N.C.

MDM Motorsports has scored two top-10 finishes in the first four NCWTS events of the year. Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS) driver Austin Dillon scored a seventh-place finish at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway on March 4. Ty Dillon, also a MENCS driver, scored a fifth-place finish piloting the No. 99 entry at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on April 1.

2017 marks Jones’ second season with MDM Motorsports. Last year, he joined the team for five NCWTS races and five ARCA Racing Series Presented by Menards events. Throughout his NCWTS career, the 20-year-old Georgia native has scored five top-5 and 11 top-10 finishes in 30 series starts, including last year’s 11th-place finish with MDM Motorsports at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

This weekend’s race will reunite Jones with veteran crew chief Shane Huffman who led teams for Jones in the NCWTS, NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and ARCA Racing Series Presented by Menards.

“I’m looking forward to being back in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with MDM Motorsports this weekend,” said Jones. “They’re off to a great start with their truck series program this year, and I’m excited to drive the No. 99 Roland Chevrolet Silverado at Charlotte. I was actually able to get back on track at Charlotte just a few weeks ago during a NASCAR XFINITY Series test. Between test sessions and multiple races, I’ve had a lot of laps on this particular track and I’m very comfortable there. It was good to have that seat time to get re-acclimated to the track, so during practice I can focus on adjusting to being back in a truck and dial in the handling. Shane [Huffman, crew chief] and I are already really comfortable working together, so I think we’ll be ready to hit the ground running this weekend.”

The N.C. Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway is scheduled for Friday at 8:30 p.m. ET live on FOX Sports 1.

  • NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Fantasy Preview – Charlotte

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Fantasy Preview – Charlotte

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series return to Charlotte Motor Speedway this Friday night for the annual running of the N.C. Education Lottery 200. Thirty-three trucks are currently entered so far on the entry list. So who are some drivers to keep an eye on at Charlotte?

Kyle Busch: Coming off a win last week at Kansas, Busch has two wins at Charlotte in the last five years. Expect him to be in contention for the win on Friday night.

Matt Crafton: After a disappointing finish at Kansas, Crafton is looking for a rebound and Charlotte may be the place. Dating back to 2013, Crafton has one win (2016) and three top fives. If anyone can beat Busch, it’s Crafton.

Christopher Bell: 1.5-mile tracks have been Bell’s strong suit as of late. Bell won at Atlanta earlier this year and placed fourth last week at Kansas. Last year at Charlotte, Bell came home in the eighth position.

Timothy Peters: Peters has a great track record at Charlotte. In the last three years, Peters finished seventh or better. Look for him to be a contender this weekend.

Ben Rhodes: Rhodes is looking for a win this week after his engine blew up at Kansas late in the going. In his only start coming in 2016, Rhodes finished 17th. However, despite Kansas, he finished fourth at Atlanta earlier this year, the other 1.5-mile track.

Brandon Jones: Jones returns to the truck series this weekend at Charlotte driving the no.99 for Matthew Miller. In two starts, Jones has finished 13th or better.

These are just some of the names to keep an eye on at Charlotte this weekend.

On track activities kick-off Thursday, May 18, for two rounds of practice at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET. Qualifying is set for Friday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. ET on Fox Sports 1 followed by the race at 8:30 p.m., also on Fox Sports 1.

    JOHNNY SAUTER
    No. 21 Allegiant Chevrolet Silverado

    Charlotte Stats
    8 starts, 1 top-five, 3 top-10s

    Additional Info
    – Sauter is racing for his first win of the season following his third consecutive top-three finish at Kansas Speedway last week.

    – The No. 21 Allegiant team will run chassis No. 118. Sauter drove this Chevrolet to a third-place result at Kansas Speedway earlier this year. It was also utilized by the No. 21 team four times in the second half of the 2016 season at Chicagoland Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Texas Motor Speedway (win), and Homestead-Miami Speedway.

    – Sauter continues to lead the driver and owner point standings.

    Quote
“Charlotte, statistically, is not one of my best tracks for whatever reason. I’m not sure why that is. We’ve had some decent runs there before, so I guess for me it’s just focusing on not making mistakes. We’ll work with our teammates and watch what other teams are doing. Last year wasn’t too bad, and we learned a lot at the test, so I feel good about where we are at. I absolutely feel an urgency to get locked-in to run for another championship, it’d be nice to get that done this weekend.”

    JUSTIN HALEY
No. 24 Levine Children’s Hospital Chevrolet Silverado

    Charlotte Stats
This will be Haley’s first start at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

    Additional Info
    – Haley earned his first top-10 finish of the season last week at Kansas Speedway. It was his first 1.5-mile attempt and second race with GMS.

    – Haley will pilot chassis no. 119 for the first time in 2017.

    Quote
“I’m really happy of the run this team had last week at Kansas. We spent a lot of time prepping our 1.5-mile program and it showed. We’ll go out and try to build on what we learned last week and incorporate some of the work we did at the test. This No. 24 team has a good base to work off of so we just need to fine-tune and tweak to be able to run closer to the front and eventually capitalize on a win. I’ve still got a lot of learning to do, so the focus is on learning and then applying that knowledge to each race as we work through the season.”

    KAZ GRALA
No. 33 Outlaw Fasteners Chevrolet Silverado

    Charlotte Stats
Kaz will be making his first NCWTS start at Charlotte this weekend.

    Additional Info
    – Kaz will pilot chassis no.120; he last raced this chassis earlier this season at Atlanta Motor Speedway where he qualified 12th and finished 15th.

    – Kaz will welcome a new sponsor this weekend at Charlotte. Outlaw Fasteners will be onboard the No. 33 Chevrolet Silverado for Friday night’s race.

    – After an eighth-place finish at Kansas, Kaz is currently sixth in the driver point standings, with one win to his name.

    Quote

“It’s darn near impossible for a rookie to get an understanding of Charlotte since it is so temperature sensitive. Lucky for me NASCAR had the sanctioned test a couple weeks ago at Charlotte, so I actually got to feel the change from day to night. That’s super important for me because I know what I need the truck to feel like this weekend.
“I also have a little extra motivation this weekend with Outlaw Fasteners onboard. This is their introduction to NASCAR and I want to give them a good showing.”

KEVIN DONAHUE HAS SOLID RUN IN BLUE LIVES MATTER CHEVY KANSAS DEBUT, MB MOTORSPORTS DEDICATES RACE TO FALLEN OFFICERS

    Driver: Kevin Donahue, donahue-motorsports.com, @kevinDonahue07
    Team Info: mbracing.net, @MBMotorsports

WRIGHT CITY, MO- It was big weekend for Kevin Donahue, as he made his intermediate track debut in the Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway, driving the #63 “Blue Lives Matter” Chevy Silverado.  After a miscue on pit road cost the team ten positions on the track, Kevin battled back to finish 22nd.

“The whole experience was awesome,” says Donahue.  “Being able get my first mile and a half track under my belt, and getting to hang out with officers from the Kansas City PD was great while supporting Blue Lives Matter.  I’d like to thank everyone who helped out with the photo shoot, as that took a lot of coordination.  Our team dedicated this race to Captain Robert David Melton and Detective Brad Lancaster, fallen officers from the KCPD.”

“Kevin drove a smart race,” says team owner Mike Mittler.  “He never over-drove the truck, was able to avoid trouble on the track and earned praise from Troy, his spotter.  He also put on a good show for our new partner, Kansas City Breweries Company, which joined us at the speedway. You can’t ask for much more than that.”

Blue Lives Matter is run entirely by active and retired law enforcement officers. In today’s evolving society, an increasing number of citizens fail to accept responsibility for their actions and attempt to escape the consequences through outward blame. Due to the nature of the profession, law enforcement personnel are seen as easy targets and are consequently bullied by slander, illegitimate complaints, frivolous lawsuits, and physical attacks. The echo of these negative highlights by the media and political figures have only further damaged community relations, which has greatly increased the inherent threat of the profession. We desire to change these wrongs to law enforcement and once again shed positive light on America’s heroes to help boost morale and gain society’s much needed support.

“We really appreciate the support we are receiving from MB Motorsports,” Blue Lives Matter National Spokesperson, Lt. Randy L. Sutton (Ret.). “They understand what we do and why we do it.  They provide an excellent platform for Blue Lives Matter and we’re happy to have them as a partner.”

The Toyota Tundra 250 also marked the debut of Kansas City Breweries Company as a marketing partner with the team.  “We had a great time with everyone at MB Motorsports,“ notes Sam Lipari of Kansas City Breweries Company.  “They really deliver the demographic we are trying to reach.  We’re very happy to be working with them.”

The #63 Chevy Silverado also received support from Winntec, Gateway Kartplex, Mittler Brothers Machine & Tool, MARADYNE® High Performance Fans, Mayhew Tool, Champion Brands, Reikken, Gaither Tool, Excel Bottling / Ski Soda, Timken, MechanixWear and WIX Filters.

    FAST FACTS:
    • The Toyota Tundra 250 was Kevin Donahue’s first NCWTS start on an intermediate track.
    • This was Kevin’s third NCWTS start.
    • Kevin recently graduated from Maryville University with a Bachelor in Science.

  • Kaz Grala Welcomes New Sponsor, Outlaw Fasteners, for Charlotte

Kaz Grala Welcomes New Sponsor, Outlaw Fasteners, for Charlotte

Making his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) debut this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kaz Grala will welcome a new sponsor along for the journey on his No. 33 Chevrolet Silverado, Outlaw Fasteners.

Transforming the construction industry, Outlaw Fasteners prides itself on having a screw and drive system that allows for no stripping or dropped screws and a “one bit fits all” ability. This technology makes Outlaw Fasteners’ screws “The World’s Best Screw.”

“We are excited to have teamed up with Kaz and the No. 33,” said David Sitton, a representative of Outlaw Fasteners’ distributor. “The NCWTS is ideally aligned with our product, and we believe that both Kaz and Outlaw are emerging standouts in their respective fields. We look forward to the growth ahead for both Kaz and Outlaw Fasteners’ in NASCAR.”

While this may be the NCWTS rookie’s first start at the 1.5-mile track, he has a long racing history at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Before he was old enough to race in NASCAR, Kaz cut his teeth in the Summer Shootout Series and Winter Heat, winning championships in both bandeleros and legend cars at the quarter-mile oval and road course in the track’s infield. Now Kaz has graduated through the ranks and finds himself returning to his roots, but this time in the NCWTS.

“I’m very excited to have Outlaw Fasteners on board this weekend in Charlotte,” said Kaz. “Their company is a great fit in the racing industry and I’m proud to be a part of their introduction to NASCAR. After the test at Charlotte a few weeks ago, I feel better about my first race there. Between that and an awesome new paint scheme, hopefully we can put on a good show for Outlaw Fasteners.”

Earlier this year, Kaz made history by becoming the youngest pole award and race winner in series history at the season opener at Daytona International Speedway. Since then, Kaz has collected one top-10 and two top-15 finishes and sits sixth in the NCWTS driver point standings.

Tune-in to the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Friday, May 19 at 8:30 p.m. on FS1 to see how Kaz and the Outlaw Fasteners Chevrolet Silverado fair.

    ABOUT OUTLAW FASTENERS:
Outlaw Fasteners screws are unlike any other screw on the market and will transform the construction, hardware, home repair, building supply and manufacturing industries. The unique design of this screw and patented system effectively solves all issues in the industry related to stripped screws, dropped screws and the need for multiple driving bits for a range of screw sizes. Outlaw posits that this drive system, combined with a “no-jacking” thread design, corrosion resistant coating, self-drilling tip and self-counter sinking head makes their screw “The World’s Best Screw.”

  • Stroke of luck propels Kyle Busch to Truck Series win at Kansas

Stroke of luck propels Kyle Busch to Truck Series win at Kansas

    May 12, 2017
    By Reid Spencer
    NASCAR Wire Service

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Kyle Busch didn’t do a celebratory burnout when he won Friday night’s Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway.

He didn’t do his customary bow after notching his 47th victory in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Heartbreak for Ben Rhodes, who was leading by more than a second when his engine expired with eight laps left, provided the stroke of serendipity that launched Busch into Victory Lane.

    And Busch knew it.

“That’s one of the worst ones to swallow right there, for sure,” Busch said of Rhodes’ misfortune. “I didn’t do a burnout or nothing like that. I just got the checkered flag for our group of guys at Kyle Busch Motorsports.

“Ben Rhodes had that race won. That one was his. I tried everything I could to try to chase him back down. I just didn’t have enough speed in our Tundra tonight—it was fast, but his was a little bit faster than ours.”

Busch won for the second time at Kansas, having also triumphed in his most recent previous start at the speedway in 2014.

Three laps after a restart on Lap 139 of 167, Rhodes won a sustained side-by-side battle against Busch and pulled ahead. Rhodes stretched the advantage to as much as 1.4 seconds before a piece of debris shot through the grille of his No. 27 Toyota and torpedoed the engine.

Rhodes, who was driving a chassis built by Kyle Busch’s Rowdy Manufacturing with a body made by KBM, took his truck to the garage and retired in 23rd place.

“We ran with the best tonight,” a chagrined Rhodes said after the race. “Our Safelite Tundra had speed all night long. We did everything right, but Ben Rhodes has a curse on his back or something, because something always goes wrong.

“A piece of debris went through the grille into the radiator and blew up the motor… It’s just crazy that something always goes wrong with our (ThorSport) team. We do everything right—we just can’t pull one off. We’ve been trying for years and years.”

Rhodes, of course, is only 20 years old and has just 31 career starts in the Truck Series.

Johnny Sauter ran second and retained the series lead by two points over polesitter Christopher Bell, who was trapped a lap down after pitting on Lap 123 when the 10th caution of the race on Lap 127 interrupted the pit sequence.

Busch had just left pit road when the yellow flag flew. The caution kept him on the lead lap, and he cycled back into the lead when the rest of the contenders came to pit road on Lap 128.

But Busch lost the top spot to Rhodes after the 11th caution for Matt Crafton’s spin through the infield grass, and Rhodes pulled away while Busch and third-place finisher John Hunter Nemechek were battling for second place.

Bell came home fourth, followed by Chase Briscoe and Brett Moffitt.

TYLER YOUNG EARNS SOLID TOP-15 FINISH AT KANSAS SPEEDWAY

KANSAS CIY, Kans. – In his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race of the season, Tyler Young’s conservative approach in Friday night’s Toyota Tundra 250 rewarded the Young’s Motorsports team with a hard-fought 14th place finish.

During practice on Thursday, Young and crew chief Andrew Abbott worked through changing track conditions to post competitive and consistent laps in his No. 02 Young’s Building Systems / Randco Chevrolet Silverado with an optimistic approach to the fourth race of the season.

In qualifying on Friday, just hours before the start of the race, Young posted the 19th quickest lap informing his family-owned team that his truck was wide open and felt secure through the turns.

An array of cautions at the start of the Toyota Tundra 250 found it difficult for Young to fall into a routine, but as discussed prior to the race – staying out of trouble would be crucial towards a good finish.

By the end of Stage 1 at Kansas, Young had maneuvered his way to 16th, but informed his team that he needed help with truck upon exit of the corners.

During Stage 2, Young overcame a botched restart to climb from 18th to 15th, however, approaching Lap 60, Young radioed his team that he felt like he had right front. Electing to stay out on the race track, the conditions from inside the truck improved with Young staying out and hovering inside the top-16.

With a loose on entry condition and tight through the middle and on exit, Abbott elected to make a chassis adjustment at the end of Stage 2 setting Young up for the final stint in Stage 3.
Still wrestling a loose race truck, Young maintained a safe positon inside the top-16 until leader Kyle Busch put the Midland, Texas native a lap down with 46 laps remaining in the race.

In the midst of green flag pit stops, however, the caution waved a few laps later for Ross Chastain sliding into the wall. With Young the first truck one lap down, he received the free pass and found himself back on the lead lap.

35 laps from the finish, Young restarted 15th and climbed one more spot to claim his first top-15 finish of 2017 and a huge rebound from a Lap 2 crash at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February.

    Tyler Young Quote:

“We are really happy with our performance Friday night at Kansas Speedway. We unloaded pretty good and made steady and stern adjustments through the weekend and it propelled us forward.

I had a couple of mistakes on some of the restarts and that cost us a little.

“That’s my mistake and I will get better for my guys. Overall though, this was a good night for the Young’s Motorsports team and exactly what I needed to get some momentum on my side in preparation for my next race.

“Thanks to Andrew (Abbott) and the rest of the guys for working hard all weekend long. It’s nice to go back to North Carolina with a solid finish and the determination to get even better for the next one.”

Spencer Boyd Earns Second Career Top 20 Finish in Kansas Speedway Debut

Kansas City, KS (May 13, 2017) – In somewhat of a homecoming race, Missouri native Spencer Boyd, brought the No. 12 Grunt Style Chevrolet Silverado to a 20th place finish with many friends and family in attendance. The running of the Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway was Boyd’s first race of the season and the first time at this track.

“We battled all through practice and qualifying with an engine that lacked horsepower,” said Boyd. “Crew Chief, Jeff Spraker, and the Rick Ware Racing crew threw the kitchen sink at it including changing the carburetor just before the race. As we took the green flag I realized we had found the power that had been missing. Kansas Speedway has shades of Daytona so I was super comfortable running wide open all the way around this 1.5 mile track.”

Boyd would start the 167 lap event from 30th position as a result of his qualifying effort earlier in the day. With five caution flags in Stage 1, Boyd kept his No. 12 Chevrolet on the lead lap moving up nine spots to the 21st position after the 40 lap segment.

Pitting under caution between stages, the crew made a track bar adjustment and tire pressure changes to loosen up the truck. Boyd would start Stage 2 in 19th position. There were longer runs in the second 40 lap segment and at the end of it Boyd would find himself down one lap to the leaders in 23rd position.

The crew gave Boyd four fresh Goodyears to start Stage 3 in 22nd position where he would find himself for quite some time as the field would log laps after a lap 88 caution. Spencer kept the truck clean, but will fall three laps down in the 23rd position before taking the wave around when Ross Chastain’s No. 66 found the wall for the 10th caution of the race.

As Kyle Busch would drive to win the race, Spencer continued to persevere working his way up to a 20th place finish. He moved up 10 spots in the race, second only to John Hunter Nemechek’s 11 spots.

“What started as a puzzling weekend, resulting in a pretty solid finish,” added Boyd. “I’m thankful my Mom was in the stands with our extended family to start the Mother’s Day weekend off right. We also snuck some fun in while ‘Crusin’ the Campground’ with our new Excessive Cart.”

The 20th-place finish was Boyd’s second top 20 in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition with four starts under his belt.

Spencer and his Rick Ware Racing team will be back next week at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the running of the North Carolina Education Lottery 200. The fifth race of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season will be Friday, May 19th and can be seen LIVE on FOX Sports 1 at 8:30 pm ET. It can also be heard on Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SiriusXM Channel 90.
