Kyle Busch Wins Toyota Tundra 250

Kyle Busch visited Gatorade Victory Lane for the first time in 2017, winning the Toyota Tundra 250.

Even though Busch won the first two stages, with just eight laps remaining, it didn’t look like Busch would be in Victory Lane but bad luck struck Ben Rhodes as his engine gave way, preventing Rhodes from his first career victory in the Series. The race saw 15 lead changes among four drivers with Busch leading 91 laps for his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series win at Kansas Speedway.

Johnny Sauter finished second, his sixth Top-10 finish in nine race at Kansas Speedway. John Hunter Nemecheck finished third, his first Top-10 finish in two races at Kansas Speedway. Chase Briscoe, who won in the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards race at Kansas Speedway last year, was the highest finishing rookie, finishing fifth.

Sauter currently leads the point standings by two points over Christopher Bell.

Earlier in the day, Ryan Blaney won the pole for tomorrow’s Go Bowling 400 with a speed of 189.6 m.p.h., his first pole in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Two-time Kansas Speedway winner Joey Logano will start second, the 10th time he’s started in the Top 10 at Kansas. Martin Truex Jr. will start third, his 11th Top 10 start at Kansas Speedway. Ricky Stenhouse Jr, who is running the Go Bowling car this weekend, starts fourth. Jamie McMurray will start 12th, while Clint Bowyer will start 30th.

The Go Bowling 400 is tomorrow night at 6:30 PM CT and tickets are available.

Toyota NCWTS Kansas Quotes – Christopher Bell, Brett Moffitt, Timothy Peters and Samantha Busch

Toyota Racing – Christopher Bell, Brett Moffitt, Timothy Peters and Samantha Busch
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS)
    Kansas Speedway – May 11, 2017

Toyota NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers Christopher Bell, Brett Moffitt and Timothy Peters along with special guest Samantha Busch were a select few who participated in a charity event at Kansas Speedway benefitting local women’s shelters. All were made available to the media following the event:

CHRISTOPHER BELL, No. 4 SiriusXM Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
Talk about your expectations for this weekend
“Well Kansas is always super exciting because it’s so wide on the front straightway, restarts are always super hectic and the way the trucks draft, you can’t really get away from somebody, so that’s typically why you see three and four wide on the restarts here. So that’s something I think all of us drivers are a little bit apprehensive about is because you just never really know what to expect and there’s no way to plan for how the restarts go. But Kansas is a – it’s a really wide race track. A really fast race track, so it provides awesome racing.”

What did being able to put the Women’s Hope Kits together mean to you?
“It was really special. I’m really thankful that everyone at Kansas and Toyota were able to do this. It’s a really cool deal and I’m glad that us race car drivers were able to give back a little bit.”

With a win under your belt does it change your approach heading into this weekend?
“I feel like having the win under our belt maybe allows my crew chief to be a little bit more aggressive on pit strategy, such as getting track position instead of tires or vice versa. Maybe a little bit more aggressive on pit strategy. As far as me driving – not really because we’re out there to give 100 percent all the time. I’m thankful we’ve got the win. It definitely takes some stress off, but we’re out here and we want to win more too.”

BRETT MOFFITT, No. 7 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing
How do you feel about giving back to the local community?
“It’s really fun that we get the opportunity to come out here before we get on track today. We were here all morning, so it was good to be able to put it to a good purpose and help build these Women’s Hope Kits for WorldVision. It’s just really great what they’re doing, so it makes it a lot of fun as a driver to be able to come and help give back.”

What are you looking forward to about Kansas?
“I’m looking forward to – just based off of Red Horse (Racing) and Timothy’s past success here – they’ve always had really fast Tundras and it’ll be good for us to kind of get things going again. We had a long break there and I feel like this is going to be a really strong track for us. It’ll be a good place to come back to and hopefully end up with a good finish.”

TIMOTHY PETERS, No. 17 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing
Talk about being involved in the charity event today.
“It’s really cool for the race track to be involved in some many charities and to help with the WorldVision and Women’s Hope Kits and for Toyota to be involved and to come ask us to do it was pretty cool to experience. It makes you sit back and think that you still don’t take anything for granted. With that said, hopefully these will go to great use for the women that will receive them.”

What are your expectations for the race tomorrow?
“We’re looking forward to racing good in all of the stages. Maybe we can get a stage win or two and some playoff points and even get that win that’s been eluding us for a while. I love Kansas. We’ve had great runs out here over the past and hey, you know, we had a shot at it last year. There at the end when things were getting slice and dice, we got shuffled back, but we ran up front all night long and we’re hoping to pick up where we left off.”

SAMANTHA BUSCH, wife of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Toyota Camry driver Kyle Busch
Talk about attending this charity event and giving back to the community.
“Yeah, this is a great weekend. Toyota’s putting on an awesome event with WorldVision. We’re packing over 1,000 care packages for women’s shelters here in Kansas and it has all the necessities. What a lot of people don’t realize is sometimes when women leave the situation that they’re in they don’t have anything with them. They don’t have time to grab a toothbrush and hair brush and all that. The great people at Toyota put this all together and they’re going to have great care packages and a nice little Mother’s Day gift.”

How does it feel to give back like this?
“It’s wonderful. We’ve worked with Toyota and some other charities in the past and done things like this and actually had the opportunity to meet some of these women and they’re just so appreciative and grateful that somebody’s thinking about them and thinking about little things that we take for granted every morning. I think this is a really good event. I think they’re going to love it and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

What’s this say about the motorsports community giving back?
“It’s one thing maybe people don’t realize that NASCAR – we are a very tight knit community. We travel together. We’re like a travelling circus almost 38 weeks out of the year and we’re all here for one another. We support each other’s causes and charities and different initiatives and we really all work together to give back to the community.”

  • MDM Motorsports: NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Preview: Kansas Speedway

MDM Motorsports: NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Preview: Kansas Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (May 11, 2017) – After a month-long hiatus, the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) will be back in action on Friday at Kansas Speedway located in Kansas City, Kan. MDM Motorsports will field the No. 99 Chevrolet Silverado in Friday’s race with Travis Miller behind the wheel.

MDM Motorsports has scored two consecutive top-10 finishes in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition and the No. 99 entry sits inside the top 15 in the owner point standings tied with the No. 18 truck of Kyle Busch Motorsports. Ty Dillon scored a top-five finish at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on April 1, and his brother, Austin Dillon, finished seventh at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway on March 4.

Last weekend, Miller won race number one of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East WhosYourDriver.org Twin 100s at South Boston (Va.) Speedway. On Friday, he will be making his fifth NCWTS start, however it will be his first time behind the wheel of a MDM Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado.

“I am so thankful for the opportunity to race the MDM Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado this weekend,” said Miller. “It has been a great start to the year for our team and I’m hoping we can continue that success this weekend at Kansas Speedway with a solid run. I’m looking to keep the truck clean, learn and have fun this weekend.”

Qualifying for the Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway will be broadcast live on FS1 starting at 4:30 p.m., ET on Friday, May 12. Race coverage will shortly follow starting at 8:30 p.m., ET on FS1.

  • Kansas Speedway – Did You Know?

Kansas Speedway – Did You Know?

The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and the Camping World Truck Series travel to Kansas Speedway this weekend for racing under the lights. The Truck Series Toyota Tundra 250 is set for Friday, May 12, at 8:30 p.m. ET while the Cup Series Go Bowling 400 will air Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Both races will be televised on FS1.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch is the defending race winner and is still searching for his first victory this season. He has four top fives and six top 10s at the track with the 12th best driver rating. Busch is currently 10th in the point standings.

The first Cup Series race at the 1.5-mile track was on Sept. 30, 2001, but did you know that it was won by Jeff Gordon? There have been 22 Cup Series races at Kansas Speedway, one each year from 2001 – 2010 and two races per year since 2011. Hendrick Motorsports leads the series in wins at Kansas with six; Gordon has three (2001, 2002, 2014) and Jimmie Johnson also has three (2008, 2011, 2015).

Fourteen different drivers have won poles at Kansas, led by Kevin Harvick, Johnson, Matt Kenseth and Kasey Kahne, with three poles each. But did you know that Jason Leffler won the pole for the inaugural Cup Series race at Kansas Speedway in 2001? He won it in the No. 01 Dodge for Chip Ganassi Racing with a speed of 176.499 mph and is the only driver to capture his first career Cup Series pole at Kansas.

Leffler, known as “LEFturn,” began his career as an open-wheel driver winning three consecutive USAC Midget championships from 1997-99 and the 1998 USAC Silver Crown championship. He also made three starts in the IndyCar Series and finished 17th in the 2000 Indianapolis 500.

Leffler’s NASCAR career began with four starts in the XFINITY Series in 1999 with Joe Gibbs Racing, running a full-time schedule in 2000. He advanced to the Cup Series in 2001 with Chip Ganassi Racing. During his career, he made 423 starts across the three national series and has two XFINITY wins and one victory in the Camping World Truck Series.

On June 12, 2013, Leffler lost his life in a crash during a 410 sprint car race at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey. He was 37 and left behind a son, Charlie, who was only five years old at the time

Leffler was a fierce competitor on the track but his most enduring quality was his generous spirit off the track. He will always be remembered for his irresistible smile, his selfless desire to help others and who could forget his trademark haircut?

Three-time Cup Series champion Tony Stewart remembers Leffler as “a great racer and an even better friend. We raced together a lot, and our career paths were very similar. He loved racing, especially open-wheel racing, and that’s a passion we both share. To not have him around to talk about whatever race one of us had just run, or were going to run, will be hard.”

Qualifying well at Kansas Speedway should give drivers an edge. Five of the 22 (22.7 percent) Cup Series events have been won from the front row, four from the pole position and one from second-place. But did you know that 54.5 percent of the races have been won from a top-10 starting position? Brad Keselowski won from the deepest in the field ( 25th) in the spring race of 2011.

As we head to Kansas Speedway, Jimmie Johnson leads all drivers with the series-best driver rating of 110.6, with three wins, nine top fives, 17 top 10s and three poles. Kenseth (108.1), Harvick (105.3), Martin Truex Jr. (95.7) and Kahne (91.4) round out the top five best driver ratings.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has struggled this season but did you know that he has the sixth-best driver rating (90.0) at Kansas Speedway? He has three top fives, nine top 10s and one pole at the track and is looking forward to the race.

“Kansas is a great racetrack for me,” Earnhardt said. “That place has widened out pretty good and you can run against the fence there, which is a line that I like to run. It’s a very fast racetrack and very smooth, a lot of fun, so we should have a good time.”

The on-track action begins Thursday, May 11, with Truck Series practice, culminating with the Go Bowling 400 Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. In the meantime, check out the video below as we take a moment to remember Jason Leffler.

  • Tyler Young ready to get back in the saddle at Kansas Speedway

Tyler Young ready to get back in the saddle at Kansas Speedway

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – After the disappointment of getting caught up in a Lap 2 crash in the season-opener at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Young’s Motorsports driver Tyler Young has never been so ready to get back behind the wheel in Friday’s Toyota Tundra 250 at Kansas Speedway.

Young, the Midland, Tex. native enters his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race of the season looking to duplicate his performance under the Kansas City lights, where an 11th place finish last May propelled him to a then career-high fourth place in the championship standings.

While Young isn’t contending for a championship run this season, the 26-year-old is still embracing the opportunity to put his No. 02 Young’s Building Systems / Randco Industries Inc. Chevrolet up front and in the hunt.

“Man, I’m so ready to get back in a truck,” said Young. “We had a strong truck at Daytona and were wiped out before we even had a couple laps complete. I knew it was going to be a couple races before I had the chance to get back behind the wheel. My season though starts now.”

Even though he hasn’t been in the seat, Young has been one of the busiest drivers around. From concentrating on Young’s Motorsports NASCAR K&N Pro Series East program with development driver Reid Wilson to accelerating his partnership with friend Austin Hill at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway and Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Young has also spent a lot of time on Young’s Motorsports paint and body, which now boasts a new larger location adjacent to the team’s shop in Mooresville, N.C.

“It’s been a busy few months,” added Young. “Reid has done a good job for us. A couple top-10s to the start the season and our relationship with Austin is getting better and better with each race we are working together. I’m taking an active approach to make sure I’m in the best shape that I can be to get behind the wheel and our guys led by Andrew (Abbott, crew chief) have really put an emphasis on the truck making sure we can be good as we can be when practice starts on Thursday.”

Young will make his fourth career start at Kansas Speedway Friday night and eyes his fifth career top-10 run in the second mile-and-a-half track of the year.

“We like top-10s,” sounded Young. “I know the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series is a tough series right now, but we embrace the challenges and look forward to a good run on Friday night to propel us forward to the upcoming races at Charlotte, Dover and my hometown track of Texas Motor Speedway.”

In 72 career NCWTS starts, Young holds five top-10 finishes to his credit with a career-best sixth at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February 2016. A sixth-place qualifying effort at Eldora Speedway in July 2015 is his best time trials effort to date. Young’s Motorsports has competed on the tour since 2012.

For more on Tyler Young, please visit YoungsMotorsports.com or click on his Facebook page. Young is also active on Twitter. You can follow and tweet with him @TylerYoung02.

The Toyota Tundra 250 (167 laps / 250.5 miles) is the fourth of 23 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races on the 2017 schedule. Practice begins on May 11 from 2:00 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. A final practice session is set for 4:00 p.m. – 4:55 p.m. Qualifying is set for race day, Fri., May 12 beginning at 3:35 p.m. The 32-truck field will take the green flag shortly after 7:30 p.m. with live coverage on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), the Motor Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Satellite Radio, Channel 90).
