BROOKLYN, Mich. – Garrett Smithley continued his recent streak of great races Saturday, finishing 17th on the lead lap in the Menards 250 Xfinity Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

Smithley has had top-20 finishes in four of the past six Xfinity events. Saturday he drove the Operating Engineers 324 Chevrolet for JD Motorsports with Gary Keller.

“This was one of the best weekends from practice all the way through the race,” Smithley said. “Michigan has been one of my favorites since I raced there last year in the truck, and this weekend did not disappoint. We were racing some really good cars and passing them.

“The whole JD Motorsports team has stepped it up this year, and we’re hoping to keep riding this momentum.”
It was a fine day all around for JD Motorsports. In addition to Smithley’s 17th-place run, Ross Chastain was 16th and Ryan Preece 19th.

Series point leader Daniel Suarez won the race.

The series moves on to Iowa Speedway for a June 19 race.

  • Confidence Continues to Grow for Anderson Following Texas Run

Confidence Continues to Grow for Anderson Following Texas Run

Jordan Anderson’s Bolen Motorsports crew placed 22nd after starting 17th for Friday’s Rattlesnake 400, posting his third straight top-25 finish in the 2016 season. Anderson, who drives for the first-year organization in their No. 66 entry, remains optimistic despite some serious setbacks early in the year, such as a DNF at Daytona and back-to-back DNQs at Atlanta and Martinsville.

Said Anderson of his Rattlesnake 400 run, “Really, really solid finish here in Texas today. Awesome qualifying run by our guys, we were top-20 in practice both days. Today, getting that good qualifying run was a good motivational booster for our crew guys to show that we can qualify up there. We have speed. We were on the same straightaway as the big teams. We passed a couple of the big team trucks and ran there by them for most of the race.”

Anderson is in his second season of Camping World Truck Series competition, and although he has had some less than savory results, he is still with a stable team that has the potential to grow and become more consistent as the year progresses. He takes care of his equipment, which for a small team is very important. He’s one of three full-time employees at Bolen, and with their limited resources, he continues to grow as a driver.

Currently, 25th in points, Anderson’s Texas truck will be used again at Iowa and again at Gateway, both tracks that are harder on equipment than Texas. Considering that the season is only seven races old, Iowa and Gateway will be important in deciding how his 2016 will fare. He has the potential to carry on and maybe even improve his top-25 streak in those events. But if the team struggles, it may be a repeat of 2015 in the long run.

Still, this has been a good year for Anderson regardless of struggles. Bolen can build their organization around him and build him up as a driver as well. Texas showed that the team is moving in the right direction and it could lead to other strong runs for this underfunded team.

  • William Byron Takes Second Win of 2016

William Byron Takes Second Win of 2016

William Byron won the 2016 Rattlesnake 400 at Texas Motor Speedway, leading the final six laps on his way to victory over a very dominant Matt Crafton. Byron, a Kyle Busch Motorsports rookie, claimed his second win of 2016 following a surprise win in Kansas last month.

Crafton, who rebounded from bringing out the first caution of the race, led 133 of 167 laps before taking the runner-up finish. Polesitter Johnny Sauter took home third, while Ben Kennedy and Tyler Reddick rounded out the top-five. The win moved Byron to third in the points, 23 behind points leader Crafton.

Said Byron of his late-race pass, “I found the top earlier in the race and it didn’t work very well lap 15 to lap 20 in the run. Once I could get laps on the tires – it’s all about heart and you have to want it and my team wants it and I see that every day.”

Rounding out the top-10 was Timothy Peters, John Hunter Nemechek, German Quiroga (who was making his first start since 2014), Rico Abreu, and Daniel Hemric.

Following his eighth-place finish, Quiroga was pleased.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “I gotta thank everybody at Red Horse Racing (and) my crew chief Scott Zippadelli. I think we really have a lot of chemistry together. Coming back home to the truck series and bringing the truck back with a top-10 and in one piece, I’m very happy, very proud. Thanks to Toyota, TRD, and all the fans that follow me.”

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will take to the track again on June 18, at Iowa Speedway.

  • Sauter Claims Texas Pole, Quiroga Starts Second

Sauter Claims Texas Pole, Quiroga Starts Second

Johnny Sauter claimed the pole for Friday night’s Rattlesnake 400 at Texas Motor Speedway, his 12th career pole and first of 2016. This is Sauter’s third career pole at Texas. Sauter took his No. 21 Smokey Mountain Snuff Chevy to the top of the charts ahead of the No. 11 of German Quiroga, who will be making his first start in the series since 2014 driving for Red Horse Racing, a team he previously raced for in 2013 and 2014.

Sauter’s GMS Racing entry took the 1.5-mile speedway in 29.996 seconds, topping Quiroga’s 30.018 elapsed time. Rounding out the top-five is the No. 19 of Daniel Hemric, who took the track in 30.022 seconds, while two-time champion Matt Crafton took the fourth spot with a 30.025 and the No. 29 of Tyler Reddick took the track in 30.050 seconds.

Sauter looks to claim his second win of 2016 following his victory at Daytona and also looks to claim his third win at Texas in the Truck Series, while Crafton looks to claim his third-straight win of 2016 and his third win at Texas overall, previously winning at the 1.5-mile speedway in June of 2014 and 2015.

Positions sixth through 10th were claimed by rookie William Byron, John Wes Townley, Timothy Peters, rookie Christopher Bell, and Spencer Gallagher.

  • Toyota NCWTS Texas Rico Abreu Matt Crafton Notes & Quotes

Toyota NCWTS Texas Rico Abreu Matt Crafton Notes & Quotes

ThorSport Racing drivers Rico Abreu and Matt Crafton were made available to the media at Texas Motor Speedway:

RICO ABREU, No. No. 98 Safelite Auto Glass/Curb Records Toyota Tundra, ThorSport Racing
What are your expectations for your first Texas race?
“I think they are pretty high after the last few weeks truck racing. I think between Dover and Charlotte, we had some solid runs, not just the greatest finishes. I think our trucks have a lot of speed as an organization right now at ThorSport with the 88 (Matt Crafton) running good, the 13 (Cameron Hayley) and the 41 (Ben Rhodes) are there as well as the 98. I’m excited.”

Has Matt Crafton given you any advice about racing at Texas?
“Quite a bit, more so on just the tire fall off. We’re running a new tire, same as the Cup cars ran earlier this year. Just the differences at all these tracks, it’s all new to me. Definitely good to get back and forth with him (Matt Crafton) on different grip levels from Charlotte to here. We had a day race in Charlotte, so the track was really hot and slimy, sliding around a lot and I felt you could move around a lot. Just watching the race (here) last year, I felt you could move around a lot here as well. I will pick Matt’s brain throughout practice here today and see where we finish.”

How valuable has Matt Crafton been to you as a teammate this season?
“He’s been huge, off the track, on the track, mountain bike riding – wherever we go. More so at the race track from these last three weeks of truck racing, he’s so detailed about everything he explains and describes and feels. He’s been doing it for a long time. I don’t expect anything else. Being able to run over to his truck out of practice or him come over and look under the splitter or work my crew chief Doug (George). ThorSport Racing in general is a great organization and everyone works really well together, which just keeps building the organization to what it is at today. I think Matt (Crafton) in general has so much to do with all that. At the end of the day, they are the ones that everyone goes to and ask questions or they are in your garage on your side of the shop helping you guys.”

Do you feel pressure to perform well based on your past success at the Chili Bowl?
“Not any expectations on mine. I’ve had a lot of success in open-wheel racing – Sprint Cars, Midget Cars, go karts and the K&N East series. I feel like the Truck Series is the next step and the success I’ve had so far. I haven’t been off results, but the people that have been around me and affiliated with me every weekend have seen it. I’m happy where I’m at right now. I’m not in any rush. I plan on being here for a long time.”

How would you describe yourself off the track?
“I just like to have fun and enjoy life. That’s what it comes down to and to be happy. You look around and look at us sitting up here how lucky we are to be here. As race car drivers, and that being our job. I am pretty hard on myself because I know how incredible of an opportunity I’ve been given. I try to take advantage of all these opportunities just because there’s someone out there that doesn’t get those opportunities and aren’t as lucky as we are all here. I’m happy where I’m at and enjoying every moment of it.”

MATT CRAFTON, No. No. 88 Menards/Ideal Door Toyota Tundra, ThorSport Racing
What about this track suits your driving style?
“I love the June race – it’s one of my favorites because you have to lift the most. You’re not running wide open for 15 laps. If you’re in clean air it puts the driver in the seat more because you have to modulate the throttle and do different things to make the truck fast. You can slip and slide and it reminds me more of Atlanta, and that’s one of my favorite race tracks and why I love coming to Texas. You can search, move around and just like Rico (Abreu) said, he was the only one in the rookie meeting asking anything about running the high line here, and I know where he’ll be tomorrow during the race.”

How do you think Rico Abreu has handled the fan attention he’s received?
“He’s done real well. He’s not really worried about that, he’s just driving a race car. At the end of the day, it’s about driving a car and having fun and putting on a good show. That’s what we are here to do for all the fans and the people that watch it on TV. He looks at that and he’s having fun, which is the most important thing. A lot of people get here and get stressed out and forget to have fun. We’re having fun. I know I am, and I know he is as well.”

What will be your approach to the rest of the season before the Chase now that you have two wins?
“I’m going to experiment, but we’re not going to get too far out of the box. We’ll try some things some weeks. We’re going to go try to win more than just two races before we get to the Chase. We don’t want to do anything stupid and finish 10th and be aggravated by that. We’re here to win races. If it’s not that good in practice, we’re not going to lead the race, but we’re definitely going to experiment some.”

Travis Kvapil on Racing at Texas Motor Speedway:
“Texas is a special track for me because it is the track that I got my first NCWTS win as a rookie in 2001. I have always enjoyed coming here because it is fast, racy, and has a lot of character. The age and the bumps allows the groove to widen out throughout the race especially when the tires wear. It should be a good race for our GasBuddy Chevrolet”

Austin Hill Texas Motor Speedway Preview

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Driver Makes His Debut at Texas Motor Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (June 7, 2016) –NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) driver Austin Hill is making his first national touring start at the 1.5-mile oval of Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) this Friday in the Rattlesnake 400. The 22-year-old is piloting the No. 20 A+D Welding Ford F-150 and will be making his third start this season as he runs a partial NCWTS schedule.

Hill has two NASCAR career starts on 1.5-mile tracks, both of which resulted in Top-20 finishes, including a 12th place finish at his home track of Atlanta Motor Speedway earlier this season. Hill has posted Top-20 finishes in each of his two NCWTS starts so far this season.

“Racing on 1.5-mile tracks is a lot different than the shorter tracks I’m used to,” said Hill. “The bigger tracks just require a different style because aero and traction comes into play, especially with the Truck Series since they don’t have as much horsepower.”

The NASCAR Next alum is not afraid of trying new things and looks to use this weekend’s race as a way to build his team’s intermediate track program.

“You want to hold it full throttle for as many laps as you can, if you can,” said Hill. “I’m pretty comfortable running wide open like that. It’s learning the drafting and side drafting that will be the test. Learning to work the air and knowing the right time to pull off another truck to make the pass will be a focus for me this weekend.”

Hill, from Winston, Ga., raced Legend Cars at Texas Motor Speedway’s 1/5-mile circuit as he was starting his racing career. Hill earned the 2014 Battle at the Big Top Pro Championship title in the US Legend Cars Series at the track.

“I’m pretty excited to be making my first NASCAR start at Texas Motor Speedway,” said Hill. “I’ve raced Legend Cars there in the past but to be racing there in the Truck Series is awesome!”

The Rattlesnake 400 will take place on Friday, June 10 at 9:00p.m. ET at Texas Motor Speedway. Fans can follow Hill on social media for updates at Austin Hill Racing (Facebook), @_AustinHill (Twitter) and @_Austin_Hill_ (Instagram).

    About Austin Hill

Austin Hill, a Winston, Ga. native, is driven to become the next big name in NASCAR.

The 22-year-old is driving a partial schedule in the 2016 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, securing a Top-20 finish in both of his starts this season. Hill earned a third-place finish in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Championship in only his second full-time season in the series. Hill is a two-year member of the NASCAR Next program, a program designed to cultivate and promote the sports’ next generation of superstars. Over the past two years, Hill has secured four NASCAR K&N victories and 12 Top-5 finishes. Hill started his racing career at the age of six in Quarter Midgets.  He won the 2002 Quarter Midget championship at his hometrack in Cumming, Ga. and went on to excel in Bandolero, Legends Semi-Pro Series and Pro Late Model Series racing. Hill currently resides in Mooresville, N.C. with his wife, Ashlyn, and daughter, Lynnlee.

    TOYOTA QUOTES
MATT CRAFTON, No. 88 Damp Rid/Menards Toyota Tundra, ThorSport Racing
    Finishing Position: 1st
Were you surprised with how strong your truck was in the last half of the race?
“The crazy part about it, we didn’t make a whole lot of changes. They made all the changes last night – two nights ago Junior (Carl Joyner, crew chief) and I went to dinner and sat until 11:00 and thought of a ton of things. We had a list of about 20 or so things and I think he changed 15 or more things. We got about halfway through the changes yesterday that he was telling me that he did and I was like, ‘I’m good, I don’t need to know anything else you did to it.’ We were honestly, I knew we were off at Dover in practice, but this was the worst we’ve been in a long time during practice and they wholesaled this thing and from lap one on I knew it was game time. The first one I slid through the box and just had a goofy pit box there and had another one, but this Menards Toyota Tundra was right there at the end.”

What does it mean to have beat Kyle Busch today?
“It was definitely very, very good to be able to beat him. He’s won a lot of races here and anybody who can beat Kyle Busch in one of these Truck races, you’re doing something. And I definitely know that we beat him today.”

What adjustments did you make on the truck during the race?
“It was a lot of air pressure adjustments honestly. It was amazing – lap one I drove it down into three and four and I thought, ‘Ooh, I think we have something here boys.’ It felt really good, unless it goes away really fast. It just kept going and it kept going and I’m like, ‘My goodness, this thing is good.’ Then we ran that long run and we came in and I slid through the pit box and I had to go all the way back I think to 19th again and drove back through them again and this Menards Toyota Tundra was unbelievable on short run and long run.”

Where was your truck the strongest?
“Just everywhere, it would go really anywhere it wanted to and that’s why I love racing in the day. If it was a night race, we wouldn’t have to lift near as much and we were coming completely out of the throttle and the drivers, we had to work a whole lot harder in the seats than what we do if it’s a night race. I think that separates some of us whenever we come to these places and you have to slip and slide a little bit more.”

Did you know how good your Tundra was on lap one?
“I literally did – I was like, wow. This thing went through one and two, well the first original start everybody got jumbled up and went through one and two and then three and four and I’m like, ‘This thing feels really good right here.’ Then we fell back to the 20s at that point and we started driving back through them and I was like, ‘Oh my goodness these boys are in trouble today.”

Did you know this is the first time you’ve won races back-to-back?
“No, actually I did know that because somebody just brought that to my attention last week and said can you do it. Last year we came really close, we went to Atlanta and then we were second at Martinsville and got beat on a green-white-checkered and it feels very good to have a back-to-back.”

Were you frustrated with some young drivers early in the race?
“Does that mean you were listening to that? Sorry. I was a little animated. The problem is that it was early in the race and we were racing and I had some huge runs on people and I go to pass and literally there were two different times down the back straightaway they drove me from the top of the wall all the way underneath the white line down the backstretch and I’m like, ‘We’re 20 laps into this race.’ At some point you have to just man up and say that you’re going to get passed right now and just go on and maybe race back. At the same time, that’s what ticks me off so bad about it whenever they turn left and drive you down to the white line. I don’t know what’s going to fix the problem, I know what would fix the problem, but I don’t really want to do it at a mile-and-a-half race track.”

Do you feel comfortable that you will be locked in this year’s Chase?
“Yeah, I would definitely say that I feel comfortable there. I didn’t completely feel 100 percent comfortable when we only had the one because I truly believe there can be nine or 10 different winners in the Camping World Truck Series. The depth of the competition is unreal right now. It’s very, very good and there’s a lot of young talent and a lot of really good trucks. It should be interesting the next few races.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 SiriusXM Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
    Finishing Position: 2nd
What happened to the truck in traffic?
“I don’t know, something happened when we got back in traffic and I got super, super tight like it was laying on the splitter or something. I don’t know if something came out of place on the frontend or what. Just proud of the effort – this is a fourth team deal and it’s not an A-plus deal. We have some work to do on this one to get it a lot better for where we need to be. Thanks to SiriusXM Satellite Radio and Toyota and all the guys at KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) that built this thing. It’s one of our newer pieces. It was okay, but once I think we had a part failure it wasn’t very good at all so we have to go back and do our homework.”

MATT TIFFT, No. 11 NASCAR Heat Evolution Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing
    Finishing Position: 5th
    How was your Tundra today?
“We really struggled all day. We have a little bit of damage on the first lap, but we were just way too tight all day. When you have those situations and you’re in the back like that, you have to play the strategy piece. Scott Zipadelli (crew chief) did an awesome job with that, obviously bringing home my first top-five in the Truck Series. We weren’t going to come down and I said, screw it, let’s come down and let’s get some fuel. It really worked to our favor there and sometimes when you’re in the back like that you have choices you can make. Really cool having NASCAR Heat Evolution on the truck, it’s awesome what they’re doing for the sport with video games. Red Horse Racing has worked hard this whole year and the funny thing is that we’ve had really, really fast trucks and we didn’t get the finishes we wanted. Today may be the opposite, but we’ll take top-fives as they come.”

TIMOTHY PETERS, No. 17 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing
    Finishing Position: 7th

CHRISTOPHER BELL, No. 4 Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
    Finishing Position: 8th

WILLIAM BYRON, No. 9 Liberty University Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
    Finishing Position: 10th
    How was the race today?

“We started first and we were able to get a pretty good lead there early in the race. We just had a couple strategy things work out the way they did and restarts weren’t my strong suit, starting on the bottom. I’m just going to have to look back at those and see what I can do when I’m starting fifth or so like that. The track was really slick, which made it fun and fun to pass – you were able to move around, but at the same time it was harder to pass because you were sliding around so much. Now we’ll move on to Texas.”
CAMERON HAYLEY, No. 13 Cabinets by Hayley Toyota Tundra, ThorSport Racing
    Finishing Position: 15th

BEN RHODES, No. 41 USA Cars Toyota Tundra, ThorSport Racing
    Finishing Position: 17th

RICO ABREU, No. 98 Safelite Auto Glass/Curb Records Toyota Tundra, ThorSport Racing
    Finishing Position: 20th
What happened on the final green flag pit stop?
“I felt like I really let my guys down on that last green flag stop. I was so focused on not sliding my tires with 25 (laps) to go and then stopped too late in our box and my nose was out. We’ll just move on to Texas.”

AUSTIN SELF, No. 22 AM Technical Solutions Toyota Tundra
    Finishing Position: 21st

RYAN TRUEX, No. 81 Seawatch Toyota Tundra, Hattori Racing Enterprises
    Finishing Position: 22nd

DANIEL SUAREZ, No. 51 ARRIS Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
    Finishing Position: 23rd
How was the truck in today’s race?
“We maybe didn’t have the same power as the other guys, but we had good enough balance to try to move forward with the good, balanced truck that we had. That’s exactly what we were doing. We made it to second place in a truck with less power and a strong balance in the truck and we felt like we needed to gamble. We ran a little short – well, four laps isn’t a little, but it’s what we are here for. We’re here to win races and to try to go for it. That’s what my crew chief wanted to do. I’m proud of it, I’m not disappointed. We just have to keep working. We have the speed and we have the combo to try to make it happen, we just have to keep digging.”

CONCORD, N.C. (May 21, 2016) – Matt Crafton returned to Charlotte Motor Speedway, the site of his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory in 2008, and scored a convincing win in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200, which was completed on Saturday afternoon due to rain showers on Friday.

Crafton, who corralled his second straight Truck Series win in the process, led a race-high 47 of 134 laps and spoiled Kyle Busch’s bid for a seventh North Carolina Education Lottery 200 trophy by beating Busch to the finish line by 5.748 seconds. Johnny Sauter finished third, Tyler Reddick was fourth and rookie Matt Tifft rounded out the top five in the second of three races scheduled forSaturday, with the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race – the biggest all-star event in sports – on tap under the lights at The Greatest Place To See The Race.

    QUOTES:
North Carolina Education Lottery 200 Winner – Matt Crafton (No. 88 Damp Rid/Menards Toyota): “This thing was unbelievable from when they dropped the green. We just made air pressure adjustments – at least that’s what I was told. From the first lap I knew that we had something that would contend for the win. After we ran a few laps, the truck just got better. I got a little animated earlier because some of the other trucks would just run us down to the white line on the backstretch. I know what would cure that but I really don’t want to do that on a mile-and-a-half race track. I really wanted to get another win because I think we will have more than seven or eight trucks get a win this year to get into the Chase.”

North Carolina Education Lottery 200 Runner-Up – Kyle Busch (No. 18 SiriusXM Toyota): “Our truck was good early on. The first half of the race we were pretty good. Second half of the race something happened. We got back in traffic after that bad pit stop where we got the penalty. Something broke, so it was just super tight. It was on the splitter.”

North Carolina Education Lottery 200 Rookie of the Race – Matt Tifft (No. 11 Toyota, fifth): “It was a little bit of an up-and-down day. We struggled a little bit the first part of the race. We were just too tight. I was kind of caught in traffic there. We were in a position to come in and top off on fuel and we were able to play a little bit of strategy. We have had really fast trucks, so it’s really cool to get our first top-five finish in the Truck Series.”
