  • Crafton Still Set on Top Five Result in 2010 Truck Series Championship Standings

Sandusky, Oh. (October 11, 2010) – Matt Crafton has had to readjust his goals for the 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season. Leaving Daytona with his first ever top-five finish had Crafton in the frame of mind that a championship wasn’t out of the question. After all, he’d been a solid contender for the top spot in 2009.

But disappointing finishes for the No. 88 Menards/SealBest Chevrolet at Atlanta (27th), Kansas (25th), Texas (18th), and Michigan (27th) left Crafton thinking it might be a stretch to crack the top ten in the standings at the end of the season. Despite the disjointed first third of the season, Crafton is not only solidly among the top ten but sitting fifth with five races to go. And he has a realistic chance at staying in the top five for the third consecutive season.

“I said then that the start of our season was the worst we’ve ever had,” Crafton said. “We just had terrible luck and got caught up in some situations that took us out of a chance to not only finish well but to win. It was frustrating because we tore up a lot of good equipment and our guys had to spend a lot of time getting caught up. It’s hard to look forward when you’re sitting on a pile of wrecked stuff. But once we did get caught up we got focused and have been really steady ever since.”

Steady is an understatement: Crafton hasn’t finished outside the top ten since June. His eleven-race top-ten streak is the longest this season in the NCWTS, and during that time he’s also collected six top-five finishes and moved from tenth to fifth in the standings.

“We knew we didn’t have a realistic chance at the championship when we left Michigan,” Crafton said. “It’s not that we gave up on it but we were 350 points out and that’s tough to make up. So we focused on getting the best results we could, winning races and scoring points. We’ve had eleven top tens in a row. We’ve got our consistency back and we’re not just in the top ten we’re in the top five. We think we can get a win before the season is over.”

Consistency has been Crafton’s trademark. Over his 242-race Truck Series career Crafton has rung up 124 top-tens, with 40 of them in the top-five.

“We’ve grown as a team together,” Crafton said. “We’ve all been together for five or six years. We know each other inside and out and that’s what makes this such a great team. Bud (Haefele, crew chief) knows what I am going to say before I say it and he knows what a little tight or a little loose means and exactly how to fix it.”

The longevity of the Crafton-Haefele combination, in place since the start of the 2006 season, is only overshadowed by the longevity of the team itself. ThorSport Racing has fielded at least one entry in each series race since the first race of the 1998 season at Walt Disney World Speedway. The team’s relationship with primary sponsor Menards has endured since the start of the 2002 season, the longest team/sponsor relationship in series history. All told, the team has had 468 entries in 335 races.

“Duke and Rhonda Thorson are absolutely the type of owners NASCAR needs,” Crafton said. “They are committed to building a strong team and they haven’t ever wavered in their support. They give us everything we need. They treat us like family and it’s been an honor to drive for them. We’d like to get them a win before the season is over and get ourselves in a position to fight for the championship again next year. That’s the ultimate goal, getting to sit at the head table in December.”

  • ODYSSEY Battery Co-Primary Sponsor of Cope Twins as They Make NASCAR History in Martinsville Speedway Truck Series Race

ODYSSEY® Battery Co-Primary Sponsor of Cope Twins as They Make NASCAR History in Martinsville Speedway Truck Series Race

Twin Nieces of Daytona 500 Champ Derrike Cope Ready to Show They Belong in one of NASCAR’s Top Series

READING, Pa. October 12, 2010 – ODYSSEY® Battery byEnerSys® announced today that it will be a major co-primary sponsor of the Cope Twins – Amber and Angela – who will become the first twins in history to compete in the same race in one of NASCAR’s top three series.

Twins have never competed in a NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide or Camping World Truck Series race, but that will change when the 27-year-old sisters will get behind the wheel in the Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, October 23.

Twin nieces of 1990 Daytona 500 Champion Derrike Cope, both Amber and Angela have guaranteed starting spots in the No. 01 Dodge and the No. 6 Dodge. Both will have identical paint schemes – solid black with white ODYSSEY® Battery logos, which will adorn the hoods as well as the TV panels. Having the twins compete in the same race – their debut in the Truck Series – is a joint effort between Derrike Cope Racing, Stratus Racing Group, Daisy Ramirez Motorsports and Rick Ware Racing.

“The teams and the twins have been waiting patiently to get to this historical occasion,” said Derrike, a two-time winner in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series who now competes in the Nationwide Series. “The opportunity to showcase their driving talents will happen in Martinsville soon.”

“This is what we have strived for since we started racing go-carts at age nine,” said Angela, who along with Amber, are originally from Puyallup, Washington. “We successfully ran go-carts for years across the Northwest, then moved to North Carolina over five years ago with a dream to race stock cars or trucks. We will now get the opportunity to earn the respect of our competitors.”

The Twins’ resume includes countless go-cart victories and multiple championships. Since moving east they have competed in super late models and ARCA, although be it on a limited basis. While they haven’t been in an ARCA car in more than a year, their Uncle Derrike has had them testing at various venues, preparing for this – their shot.

“I know female racers come and go in our sport, but it all comes down to driving on a consistent basis,” said Derrike. “The twins are smart, attractive and have talent. They understand that there is a learning process associated with becoming successful. Angela and Amber will commit their time and energy to the sport. We are pleased to have ODYSSEY® Batteries as co-primary for this historic race. Their support has been crucial to our success.”

Opening practice for the Martinsville Truck race is set to begin at 10 am on Friday, October 22, followed by final practice at 1:10 pm. Qualifying for the 36-truck field will be at approximately 4:40 pm, immediately following time trials for the Sprint Cup Series cars. The Kroger 200 NASCAR Camping World Series Truck race gets the green flag at 1 pm on Saturday, October 23.

The co-primary sponsorship of the Cope Twins continues a motorsports effort by ODYSSEY® Battery, which has been with Richard Childress Racing since 2009.

  • Kyle Busch Motorsports Set to Continue Expanding, Opening New Shop

Kyle Busch Motorsports Set to Continue Expanding, Opening New Shop

In a time when money is tight and people are having a hard time with funding, NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kyle Busch is going against the norm and expanding.

Starting at the beginning of the year, Kyle Busch started a two-truck team, ready to dive head first into the series. He knew he would have to have the right backing so he hired Rick Ren, 2009 championship crew chief for Ron Hornaday, to be competition director.

So far this year has worked out well for Busch in 27 races. Johnny Benson, Brian Ickler, Kasey Kahne, Taylor Malsam, and Busch himself have combined for five wins, five poles, 11 top-fives, and 16 top-10s.

There were rumors swirling that Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) may shut down early due to lack of sponsorship. However, KBM is going in the opposite direction as on October 14th they will be opening the newly completed headquarters for a complete Grand Opening and Fan Appreciation Day.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., including a morning autograph session featuring Busch and fellow driver Ickler. The autograph session is slated to start at 9:30 a.m., and limited to the first 200 fans that purchase a wristband for $2. Proceeds from the wristband sales will be donated to the Kyle Busch Foundation. Fans can begin purchasing the wristbands at 8:30 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis. With the wristband, you are allowed to have a maximum of two items signed.

Racetrucks and show cars will be on display in the showroom and will be able to tour the 77,000-square foot KBM facility to see where the trucks are built.

“We are extremely happy with how our facility has turned out, and we’re excited about the opportunity to open our doors to our fans and let them inside for an up-close-and-personal look at the world of Kyle Busch Motorsports,” said Busch on his team’s website. “We’re proud of our team, we’re thankful for our sponsors and supporters, and we’re so glad to invite everyone to our race shop. Actually, I think ‘corporate headquarters’ is a more appropriate description of what we have here. Not only do we build and prepare our racetrucks, we also are equipped to conduct executive meetings and gatherings for our partners and prospective partners on a daily basis. And we’re also proud of the fact that our facility has become a cornerstone for a number of ‘green’ initiatives. There are enough cutting-edge technologies involved in the construction of our building to put it on a path to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, which would be something that’s unprecedented in motorsports facilities, whether it’s in NASCAR, IndyCar or Formula 1. That’s something in itself to be proud of. We welcome our fans to come out, see what we have going on here, and have a great time.”

There will also be interactive displays as they can try their hand at changing a tire, try the Traxxas radio-controlled cars, sample NOS Energy Drink and Otis Spunkmeyer cookies.

Fans attending the Grand Opening and Fan Appreciation Day festivities can tour the high-tech and environmentally friendly 77,000-square-foot KBM facility, where the team builds and prepares its stable of Toyota Tundra racetrucks.

Lastly, there will be merchandise and memorabilia available for purchase, and fans will also be available to purchase drinks and foods that support KBM, including Mars. Inc. chocolate bars and Moose Juice Slurpee products.

While fans are checking out the shop, they can also buy raffle tickets for a chance to win a 2010 Toyota Tundra and a round-trip airfare and accommodations for two to the Nov. 12-14 race weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. Details about the promotion can be found at here.

Kyle Busch Motorsports is located at 351 Mazeppa Road in Mooresville. There will be free parking across the street from the facility on the day of the Grand Opening and Fan Appreciation Day.

Late updates and more information can be found at here.

Busch Sets New Record At Gresham

While testing at Gresham Motorsports Park, Busch turned a lap of 16.992 seconds, which is the first time a full-size NASCAR vehicle has turned a sub 17-second lap on the half-mile. A video interview with Busch is posted on the YouTube section of the Gresham Motorsports Park website.

  • Carl Edwards & Crew Help Unveil New Aflac Wingman Bead of Courage

Carl and Crew to Wear Beads of Courage to Honor Kids with Serious Illnesses like Cancer

COLUMBUS, GA – (October 6) – This Sunday, October 10, NASCAR driver Carl Edwards and his crew will unveil a special new Aflac Duck Wingman Bead of Courage to show kids with serious illnesses like cancer that they are not alone in their fight against the disease. The new bead is part of the Aflac Duck’s 10th birthday celebration, as the Aflac Duck shares his birthday wish for people across the nation to help give kids facing cancer renewed strength and a reason to smile.

At a press conference scheduled for Friday, October 8, at Auto Club Speedway, Carl will be joined by the Aflac Duck and seven year-old Nolan Blake of Griffin, Ga., a cancer survivor and avid NASCAR fan and recipient of hundreds of courage beads. Nolan will be joined by his mother Brittany and Jean Baruch, Founder of Beads of Courage, a nonprofit, international organization that provides arts in medicine programs for children to help support and strengthen them as they cope with serious illness.

Building on a long-standing commitment to pediatric cancer research and treatment through Aflac’s association with the Aflac Cancer Center in Atlanta, the Aflac Duck is issuing a Duck Call to Action to encourage people to engage in the fight against pediatric cancer. Aflac has teamed with Arizona-based Beads of Courage, Inc., to create a new Aflac Duck Wingman bead that can be purchased and sent to a courageous child with cancer. Through Beads of Courage children chronicle their unique stories using beads that commemorate milestones and procedures during their treatment for cancer. Beads of Courage, Inc. is affiliated with more than 70 hospitals across the United States, including the Aflac Cancer Center.

The Aflac Duck is inviting NASCAR fans to go to aflacracing.com and click on the Beads of Courage logo to purchase an Aflac Duck Wingman bead for a child with cancer for only $5. For $25, donors can purchase beads for five children and receive one of their own. Purchasers can select the region of the country where they would like their bead to be sent with a portion of their donation going to Beads of Courage® to help provide and maintain the program in hospitals across the country.

“When I visit the Aflac Cancer Center I am moved by the courage of these heroic children,” Edwards said. “My personal experience with beads of courage inspired me; so I am proud to be a part of this program.”

Aflac Foundation President Kathelen Amos said, “In the same spirit that Aflac policies provide security for policyholders, keeping them under our wing; we envision the Aflac Duck bead symbolizing courage while being the wingman for children at the Aflac Cancer Center and facilities across the country.”

Race fans will also be treated to a special visit from the Aflac Duck on October 10th, the first time the Aflac Duck has attended a NASCAR race.

“That loveable Aflac Duck inspires smiles in children,” said Jean Baruch, RN, BSN, executive director and founder of Beads of Courage, Inc. “Our long-standing relationship with the Aflac Cancer Center, the immense strength of the Aflac Duck’s image, and Aflac’s commitment to pediatric cancer treatment and research gives me great confidence that this program will be a tremendous success in helping more kids cope with serious illnesses.”

Edwards and his pit crew will also wear a special Beads of Courage necklace like the ones worn by Nolan at the Aflac Cancer Center in Atlanta. The Aflac Ford Fusion will sport the Beads of Courage logo during the Sprint Cup race televised nationally on ESPN as part of the Aflac Duck’s 10th birthday wish for people across the nation to help give kids facing cancer renewed strength.

Bodine continues to lead the unofficial NCWTS driver standings following Las Vegas, leading Almirola by 262 points.   Peters (fifth), Skinner (eighth) and Starr (ninth) are also in the top-10 in points after 20 of 25 races.

Germain Racing leads the unofficial NCWTS owner standings by 39 points over Kyle Busch Motorsports with five races remaining in 2010.

TODD BODINE, No. 30 Valvoline Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing Finishing Position:  4th How was your race? “We missed it pretty good.  I don’t know how we missed it.  We got a right front flat (tire) at the start of the second practice so we missed all of second practice on race trim.  We needed more time.  We adjusted on it and kept making it better and better and it was the best it was at the end.  That’s what you have to be able to do.  We didn’t win but it’s a good day for points because everybody we needed to worry about was behind us.  We’ll just go on to the next one in Martinsville.” Was this a good points night for your team? “We weren’t very good in the beginning of the race.  We kept adjusting and it got better and better.  Our Valvoline Tundra didn’t come to life but it was definitely the best it was right at the end of the race.  It’s just too tight, too tight in the center and too tight off.  I think we missed a little with the shocks but for points racing, this is what you have to do.  If you can’t win, you have to do the best you can and get what the truck will give you.  Aric (Almirola) in the 51 was behind us so it was a good points night.  We don’t like to do that and think about that, but that’s what you have to do.  I got the Valvoline Tundra in fourth.” What were the final laps of tonight’s race like for you? “We still weren’t good enough for Austin (Dillon).  They have it going there, they’re really doing great and I’m happy for them.  At the end, longer runs were definitely our strong suit.  We could run times faster than the guys in front of us.  I was catching James (Buescher) there at the end, we just ran out of time.  I can’t be disappointed with fourth after the way we ran.”

ARIC ALMIROLA, No. 51 Zyclara/Graceway Pharmaceuticals Toyota Tundra, Billy Ballew Motorsports Finishing Position:  6th How was your race? “We were a little bit off all night just a little bit.  It wasn’t much.  Man, these race tracks where you run wide open you can’t really afford to be off a little bit and we were.  I felt like we had maybe a third to fifth-place truck and we finished sixth so I’m a little disappointed in that.  Nonetheless, it was a good effort.  We were terrible in practice so I’m really proud of Richie Wauters (crew chief) and all the guys on our Graceway Pharmaceuticals team, they did a really good job making our truck a whole lot better.”

BRIAN ICKLER, No. 18 M&M’s Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports Finishing Position:  7th How was your race tonight? “We fought the lack of grip all night.  We struggled on restarts.  I don’t think it was a horrible day for points for Kyle (Busch, owner) in the 18 truck.  We have one thing to look forward to.” Have you enjoyed racing with KBM this year? “They’ve been great to me.  We’ve had good runs.  Coming to Vegas here and this being the last race for me with KBM, we definitely wanted to run better.  The truck is in one piece.  Definitely not what we wanted today but it’s all right.”

JUSTIN LOFTON, No. 7 VisitPit.com Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing Finishing Position:  8th Are you happy with another top-10 finish? “I’m really happy with tonight.  It turned into being a really good night.  During practice today the No. 7 VisitPit.com Toyota Tundra was just a little off.  We were really fighting the bumps real bad, but no one was working the groove or anything like that.  In the race, I kind of slipped up and worked my way up to the top and found some grip up there and came down the first stop.  Honestly Terry (Cook, spotter) was the one that made the call.  He called for a big change and I didn’t have to say anything so it’s really cool to have someone up top that can see that kind of stuff.  The team did a great job too.  We picked up spots on pit road all night long and got the adjustments exactly where they needed to be and what we called for.  Towards the end, we just got really good, really fast and got caught up on some restarts.  We probably could have finished three or four spots better, but we’re definitely happy with the way tonight ended up considering how we started the day.”

DAVID STARR, No. 81 ASI Limited/Zachry/Stratosphere Toyota Tundra, Green Light Racing Finishing Position:  12th

TAYLER MALSAM, No. 25 EXIDE Toyota Tundra, Randy Moss Motorsports Finishing Position:  13th

JASON BOWLES, No. 77 Germain.com Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing Finishing Position:  16th

NELSON PIQUET JR., No. 15 Qualcomm Toyota Tundra, Billy Ballew Motorsports Finishing Position:  20th

MIKE SKINNER, No. 5 International Trucks/Monaco RV Toyota Tundra, Randy Moss Motorsports Finishing Position:  24th

TIMOTHY PETERS, No. 17 Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing Finishing Position:  26th

DONNY LIA, No. 90 Toyota Tundra, Stringer Motorsports Finishing Position:  28th

Dillon wins at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Austin Dillon, grandson of NASCAR owner Richard Childress, led 93 of 146 laps, including the final 35 laps on Saturday night at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and won his second Camping World Truck Series race of the season.

“My grandfather and dad had a very rough week,” Dillon said. “I think it was the roughest week of my dad’s career at RCR. My dad said that after the week he had that I had to come down here and win it. To come out here and do it is pretty awesome.” Dillion said.

Dillion also became the youngest winner in all three national NASCAR series at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Johnny Sauter finished second, James Buescher third, Todd Bodine fourth and Matt Crafton finished fifth.

Bodine’s fourth place finish increases his series standings to 262 points over Aric Almirola.

“We didn’t win but it’s a good day for points because everybody we needed to worry about was behind us.  We’ll just go on to the next one in.” Bodine said.

Crafton finished his eleventh consecutive top-ten finish of the season

“It’s a great night for the entire team whenever we can both finish in the top five.  I didn’t want to come out here and finish second, especially to Johnny. I told him in the conference call this week if I was leading not to try to pass me on the outside because I’d make my truck awfully wide.” Crafton said.

The second place finish marks the eighth top-five finish for Sauter in the last eleven races.

“I hate finishing second.  We’re here to win, and to be that close and not get it done is frustrating. We’d have liked to win back-to-back races out here. We just missed out on it but we have some really good tracks coming up still.” Sauter said.

Up next on the schedule, Martinsville Speedway on October 23.
