Isn’t It Time That NASCAR Took Away Victories?

It’s almost time for the engines to roar at Dover in the second race of the Sprint cup race and we’re still talking about New Hampshire. Of course, that’s because NASCAR has accused Richard Childress Racing of cheating at the New Hampshire race. The chassis tolerances were not up to NASCAR’s standards and driver Clint Bowyer and car owner Childress were docked 150 championship points and the crew chief on the team was fined $150, 000. And yet, the win stands for Bowyer. It makes no sense to me.

It’s a long standing tradition or rule that goes back to the beginnings of NASCAR. Big Bill France, the founder of the sanctioning body that has become an American staple, thought that fans at the track should know when they left who was the winner. Those being the case, victories are never taken away even if a rules infraction is discovered. On Sunday, that meant that Clint Bowyer got the win regardless of whether his car was illegal or not. Bowyer’s No. 33 Chevy has been hot the last two races. In fact, the car was so hot that NASCAR began to look a little closer at the team. Warnings went out after Richmond that the car was so close to being illegal that a meeting was held with Childress and the team. I found this interesting. RCR was given notice that they should clean up their act. Then the teams headed to the New Hampshire race. Post race inspection showed the car to not be within the tolerances of the rule book, and a penalty was assessed three days after the race. Bowyer kept the win, but lost most of the points he had earned, leaving him back in last place after ascending to second on race day.

I find this unusual, even though I’ve know this most of my adult life. Why should any team retain a victory if they had cheated? I understand the logic that Big Bill prescribed to. The fans at the track left knowing Bowyer had won the race, but does it make it right that his team did it by not following the rules? It has happened so often in the history of this sport that it probably is not on the mind of most fans, but does that make it right?

Since NASCAR wants to follow the stick and ball sports in their playoff system, why don’t they follow those sports in policing cheaters? Recently, the NCAA stripped a Heisman Trophy from Southern Cal start Reggie Busch because he had broken the rules. High school and college programs have always forfeited victories when cheating is discovered, taking away championships and wins. And yet, we live with this antiquated rule that says if you finish first in a race, even if you didn’t follow the rules, you still get the victory. Sure, they essentially took away the points from the victory, but forevermore the record will show Clint Bowyer as the winner on Sunday.

It’s time for NASCAR to get tougher. I know that Childress has appealed the decision saying that the tow truck probably knocked the car out of specs when pushing it back to victory lane after the car ran out of fuel. But is that going to fly with the appeals board? It usually doesn’t. In my memory I cannot remember a NASCAR decision being overturned (notice I said in my memory, which isn’t so good these days). My guess is NASCAR’s decision will be upheld. So where does that leave us? It’s time for NASCAR to simply not grant any points for the car that they have determined was not playing by the rules, eliminate all points, and grant the victory to the second place car. Nothing else makes any sense. If I were in charge, I’d get on that immediately, but I doubt that will happen. It’s tradition you know.

  • Marc Davis, Chase Elliott and Johanna Long: NASCAR’s Newest Talent Triumvirate

Marc Davis, Chase Elliott and Johanna Long: NASCAR’s Newest Talent Triumvirate

While the trio of Cup drivers atop the newly revised point standings, including Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, battle it out for this year’s NASCAR championship, three new, young drivers, Marc Davis, Johanna Long and Chase Elliott, are well on their way to becoming the sport’s newest talent triumvirate.

These three upstarts are taking the sport by storm, each excelling in various racing series throughout the country this weekend. With their skills and talents, as well as their family ties, they may just become NASCAR’s newest talent trio, poised to take the next step up the racing ladder.

Marc Davis, son of the late Harry Davis, will be making his Nationwide debut this weekend at the Monster Mile in Dover, Delaware. Davis, at age 20, will return to the track with R3 Motorsports and will pilot the No. 23 WHUR 96.3 FM sponsored Chevrolet.

This past year has been a tumultuous one for Davis. The death of his father not only hit him hard personally, but he also inherited the management of his family’s race team, now named Marc Davis Motorsports.

“It’s been an interesting year so far,” Davis said with some sadness in his voice. “This is what my dad and I worked for; to achieve my dream of having a successful and competitive NASCAR career.”

Davis, a former Joe Gibbs Racing development driver, has most recently been behind the wheel in the inaugural Free State 500 in South Africa. He competed in that American Speed Association Race in January, scoring a top five finish as he took the checkered flag in the third position.

When his father passed away, Davis was thrust from the driver’s seat into the command position with the race team that now bears his name, becoming one of the youngest team owners in the sport. Davis also is one of the few minority team owners, a mantle that he wears proudly, serving as a role model for others of diverse backgrounds in racing.

The young driver caught the eye of R3 Motorsports team owner Robert Richardson, Sr. after a previous good run at Dover International Speedway. While other drivers, including Coleman Pressley, Alex Kennedy and Johnny Sauter, have driven the No. 23, Richardson knew that Davis was the driver for the final Nationwide race at Dover this year.

“We saw how well Marc has done at Dover in the past,” Richardson said. “When this opportunity came up, we knew it would be good for everyone.”

Davis acknowledges that Dover has been a good track for him, running the 2007 and 2008 East Series races there. “It’s a good place for us,” Davis said. “It suits my driving style a lot. I’m pretty confident that we’ll have a good run.”

While Davis is thrilled to return to the track, he will no doubt do so with a heavy heart. But the young man also feels that he will be driving the challenging concrete track with an angel on his shoulder.

“Every race this year has been dedicated to him,” Davis said of his father. “I know that he’d be proud of what we’re doing now.”

Another up and coming driver, Chase Elliott, has family that is proud of him as well, namely his father Bill Elliott and his late grandfather George Elliott. Chase, the 14 year old son of ‘Awesome’ Bill, ran this past weekend at Gresham Motorsports Park, a track that his grandfather helped run, and led every lap of the 100 lap George Elliott Memorial.

While Chase Elliott never got to experience his grandfather’s racing passion firsthand as he was only three years old when his Papa George passed away, he knew of the stories his father told him, particularly of his grandfather’s devotion to the Ford brand.

“I just remember Papa George’s strong conviction for being a Ford Driver,” Elliott said. “And there was one special little red airplane that he gave me that the propeller would crank up and spin.”

The race was also special for Chase’s father Bill, who had once worked at that race track selling hot dogs and tickets. That was also the site of Bill Elliott’s first major stock car win in the mid-1970’s when he was making his own way up the NASCAR ladder.

“It was a special evening for me because Daddy’s sister Ethel and his first cousin Thelma were able to come,” Bill Elliott said. “They were able to see Chase race and win for the first time.”

Chase Elliott, now part of the Red Bull team family, has been taking the south by storm, following in the footsteps of his father. He had a top five finish at Bristol and won at the first race of the newly re-opened North Wilkesboro track. Elliott will next compete in the championship finale this weekend at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida.

The final member of the up and coming NASCAR triumvirate is Johanna Long, an 18 year old racer who has just announced that she will be dipping her toes more deeply into the Truck Series waters. Long plans to run at the Truck race this weekend with a new team, Panhandle Motorsports, making its debut at Las Vegas this weekend.

Although Long has four starts in the Truck Series, three with Billy Ballew Motorsports, this will be her inaugural run with her new family team and her first time ever foray into the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Long has two top 20 finishes in her Truck career so far and is hoping to continue learning more and gaining valuable seat time.

“I’m looking forward to getting to know the track at Las Vegas,” Long said. “I’m grateful to have the opportunity to run with my family’s team, but our ultimate goal is to have the track performance over time to become a driver for another competitive team. Every race I enter, I learn, but I also get a chance to hone my skills to keep moving forward with my driving.”

Long also has a long racing resume, tearing up the track in late models and serving as the youngest and first woman to claim the Pro Late Model title at Five Flags Speedway, taking that honor at the tender age of 15. With 19 starts so far in 2010 in various series, she has scored five top-five finishes and ten top-10 finishes.

Just like Davis and Elliott, Long has also followed in her family’s racing footsteps. In her case, she has modeled her career after her father Donald, who raced with great success in the All Pro Series in the southeast.

While these three racers have strong family ties in common, the tie that binds them most as they compete in various venues this weekend is their desire to learn so they can continue to hone their crafts and move forward in their racing careers.

Johanna Long sums it up best. “I have a lot to learn,” Long said. “Every step that you go up, you have to learn a lot more. I’m just going to go out there and do the best I can and learn as much as I can.”

With that learning attitude at the forefront, all three drivers, Davis, Elliott and Long, will no doubt continue their climb up the racing career ladder. These drivers’ ultimate hopes, however, will be to become NASCAR’s next talent triumvirate, ultimately competing for the sport’s highest honor, the Cup championship.

  • James Buescher Experiences the Agony of Defeat in New Hampshire

James Buescher Experiences the Agony of Defeat in New Hampshire

Kyle Busch continues to make friends wherever he goes. A few weeks ago it was Todd Bodine calling him dirty. Before that, Brad Keselowski announced that Busch was an a** over the PA system of the Bristol Motor Speedway. Even mild-manner Jeff Burton became red in the face because of Busch earlier this year in Charlotte.

And the fans, well they’re never at a loss of opinions for Rowdy. He’s talented and competitive and for some it rubs off the wrong way. Whether he’s being cheered or booed, Busch won’t complain, he just loves the attention.

Following Saturday’s RacedayRaffleseries.com 175 Busch can add two more drivers that were giving him plenty of attention: James Buescher and Austin Dillon. The two had just finished second and fifth respectively as Busch was celebrating his fifth win of the year in the Camping World Truck Series.

“We had a really good shot at victory lane today,” said Buescher. “Everybody on this Wolfpack Rentals team did a great job.”

The source of Buescher’s frustration was the way in which the victory got away. After chasing the dominant trucks of Busch and Kevin Harvick all afternoon, Buescher took advantage when the two got together in turn one. With six laps remaining the caution came out, setting up a final restart that saw Busch drive up and over the nose of Buescher’s No. 31 Chevrolet.

Even after hitting the wall, Busch still went on to win. Buescher settled for his fourth top five, sixth top 10 finish of the season. On the cool-down lap Busch gave the Texan the middle finger.

“He just drove us dirty and got the win and we hung in for a second place finish,” said Buescher.

Dillon on the other hand, conceited Buescher’s points. He was not only rooting for Buescher to beat the two Cup Series drivers but said Busch’s tactics are predictable. Dillon followed it up and noted that Buescher should just wreck him [Busch] next time.

“Kyle [Busch] doesn’t really give you any room,” said Dillon. “If he’s inside of you he’s going to come on in for some reason. He did it to me in Michigan too and I had to check. It’s just how he drives. It’ll all come around, world’s round.”

For Buescher it was another bright moment and impressive stat in the aforementioned columns. Since returning to the NCWTS, Buescher has been one of their brightest stars. He sits 13th in points even though he’s only run 13 of the 18 events.

It’s a wonder what where Buescher would be sitting had he run the full schedule.

The 2010 season started with Buescher in the Nationwide Series for Phoenix Racing and what was expected to be a full-time gig. While he did run the first 10 races, with a best finish of eighth at Daytona in February, he soon departed and headed back to the NCWTS. A great relationship with Turner Motorsports put him in a decent seat and he’s done the rest.

Buescher’s now one of the most consistent drivers on the circuit and pounding on victory lane’s door. Saturday was one of his best shots to do so but it slipped through his fingers.

“There’s definitely mixed emotions,” Buescher said. “Being that close is one thing but getting it taken away from you like that is a totally different thing. If you’re faster, you’re going to pass him but you don’t have to race him dirty and flat out try to wreck you to get the lead and that’s what he did.”

Even at the tender age of 20 Buescher isn’t intimidated by a veteran like Busch. A second place finish is nothing to sneeze at, however Buescher knows that sometimes second isn’t good enough when you should be holding the trophy. Doesn’t matter whether it was bad boy Kyle Busch or four-time champion Ron Hornaday Jr., it still hurt.

A day after the finish Buescher appeared on Speed Freaks radio where he again reiterated that Busch used dirty tactics. Then declared had there been one more lap he would have not only caught Busch, but pulled a move similar to what the driver of the No. 18 had done.

I’m going to win Las Vegas, Buescher then told the audience as he had done after Saturday’s race. Whether it was the frustration of coming so close to getting to victory lane or just losing to Busch, there’s no denying that Buescher is more determined than ever.

He’s young, talented and his career hasn’t even begun to take off yet. If the pairing of Buescher and Turner Motorsports sticks for years to come there’s no doubt that they’ll be in victory lane and eventually the head table of the season ending banquet.

Buescher’s been a quick study and the next time around he’ll know what to do differently. Losing makes a driver hungrier to end up in victory lane. With a team that has been running up front week in and week out, their time is coming.

Don’t be surprised if Buescher does go and win in Las Vegas, he’s got a big enough chip on his shoulder pushing him toward accomplish it.

  • Justin Lofton Las Vegas Preview

    JUSTIN LOFTON QUICK FACTS

    Las Vegas Motor Speedway

Smith’s Food and Drug Stores 350

    September 25, 2010

Last time out… Lofton and the No. 7 Red Horse Racing team added another 11th place finish to their 2010 stats last Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Lofton started the 175-lap race from the 10th position and battled within the top-10 throughout, before crossing the finish line in the 11th position.

Off-road roots… Lofton is taking advantage of the stop out West this week by embarking on a little nostalgia. Lofton, who honed his skills racing off-road machines before transitioning to stock cars, will head to the desert on Thursday and climb behind the wheel of a MasterCraft Safety/Rockstar Energy Trophy Truck. The NCWTS rookie won’t have all of the fun, since crew chief Mark Rette, as well as SPEED cameras will be along for the ride. Lofton’s off-road excursion will be taped for an upcoming pre-race segment on NCWTS Setup.

Around town… Lofton will join other Red Horse Racing team members on Friday at the Nellis Air Force Base, visiting the Red Horse Squadron of the United States Air Force. The No. 7 team will also run the Squadron’s decal on the B post of the truck on Saturday. Following the morning visit, Lofton will head to the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino for an open autograph session. The session will begin at 7PM and run through 8:30 PM.

Intermediate tracks, advanced finishes… Lofton will make his first start in the 1.5-mile Las Vegas race track this Saturday, but he has a strong record on other intermediate tracks to his credit. Over the last month, Lofton scored a fifth place run at Chicagoland, followed by an 11th at Kentucky.

Justin Lofton on racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway “I’m excited about going to Las Vegas this week. We have a lot going on leading up to the race and it will be fun to take Mark out to the desert in the off-road truck. The visit to the Air Force base will also be exciting. It is always humbling to meet members of the military. As far as the actual race, Las Vegas Motor Speedway is another track I haven’t raced on before, but I can always rely on my crew to prepare fast trucks, and we’ve been solid on other mile and a half tracks, so it should be a good weekend.”

Crew Chief Mark Rette on Las Vegas Motor Speedway “I’m looking forward to going to Las Vegas. It’s another track Justin hasn’t been to. We’ll use the first part of the first practice to get him acclimated to the track. We’ll approach it with a conservative setup until he gets comfortable and go from there. We have a lot of fun things going on this week before the race. I have been dying to get into an off-road truck with Justin. The first time I heard about him being from off-road, it was something I always wanted to do, and we’ve been trying to get out there for a while.”

Equipment Information Lofton will race chassis RHR123 at Las Vegas this weekend. It is the same truck that he qualified third with at Darlington, and finished fifth in at Pocono.

  • David Starr Looking for Lady Luck

After two straight disappointing finishes David Starr and the SS Green Light Racing team look for Lady Luck to help them turn their fortunes around in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Smiths 350 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Indianapolis-based building enclosure specialist ASI Limited will sponsor Starr’s Toyota Tundra for the Smiths 350 along with Las Vegas landmark Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower with associate support from Zachry.

“Last year I had a pretty good run going and we got a flat tire towards the end of the race,” Starr said. “I really love racing at Las Vegas, you always remember where you got your first victory and I’m looking forward to going back to try for another.”

“I really like how hard this team works, the stops have been good and they never give up,” David continued. “Its just a matter of time before we put it all together.”

Crew Chief Jason Miller feels they will have a strong truck this weekend. “We recently purchased a Toyota Tundra from KBM and the SS Green Light guys have been working hard to get it ready for Las Vegas. It’s TRD chassis number 100, I think it’s a real nice piece and we can’t wait to get it to the track and see what we can do with it.”

Starr has ten career NCWTS starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with three top-five finishes and five top-ten finishes including his first of four career victories back in 2002. David’s average start is 13.0 and his average finish is 12.7.

“Its unfortunate that we got spun and caused a caution last week at New Hampshire. Jason made a great call saving a set of tires and we were working towards the top-ten when we were wrecked on the last lap,” Starr added. “Jason is better than we’ve shown, I’m better than we’ve shown and this team has shown me a lot of potential over the last two weeks. Let’s hope that we can put that bad luck behind us in Las Vegas.”

The Smiths 350 is the 240th consecutive NCWTS start for the SS Green Light Racing team and the 260th career start for Starr in the Truck series.

42 trucks are on the preliminary entry list for the Smiths 350.

Practice for the NCWTS Smiths 350 will be Saturday, September 25th at 9:00 a.m. (12:00 Eastern) with final practice 10:45 a.m. (1:45 p.m. Eastern) and qualifying at 3:15 p.m. (6:15 Eastern.) The race will be shown live on SPEED TV at 6:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. Eastern.) It will also be broadcast live via radio worldwide on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and on SIRIUS Satellite Radio NASCAR Channel 128-XM104.

David, along with teammates Jason White and Tony Jackson Jr. will participate in a free autograph session at the Stratosphere Hotel & Casino on Friday, September 24th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Mike Skinner on racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

“Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of my favorite tracks. I’ve had a lot of success there over the years and we hope to continue that trend this weekend. The guys on the International Truck/Monaco RVs Toyota Tundra team have put in a lot of long hours to prepare our truck for this race and I think we’ll have a great weekend. We also have a new teammate at the track with Tayler Malsam in the No. 25 Exide Batteries Toyota Tundra; he’s a talented driver and I think it will be cool to work with him again.”

Crew Chief Stacy Johnson on competing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

“Las Vegas Motor Speedway is one of those races that we circle the date on our calendar. Our International Truck/Monaco RVs team had a great race at the last mile-and-a-half track—Kentucky Speedway—so we’re looking forward the race this weekend too. We’ve done a lot of work on our mile-and-a-half program and we feel that our trucks are getting better week after week. Given Skinner’s past success at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, we hope to have a really great race on Saturday night.”

  • Randy Moss Motorsports Returns to Las Vegas Motor Speedway as a Two-Truck Team

Tayler Malsam Will Drive the No. 25 Exide® Batteries Toyota Tundra

STATESVILLE, N.C. (Sept. 21, 2010) – Randy Moss Motorsports will return to Las Vegas Motor Speedway as a two-truck organization with sophomore driver Tayler Malsam behind the wheel of the team’s second Toyota Tundra entry. Malsam will return to the team where he made his rookie of the year campaign in the NASCAR® Camping World Truck Series™ to pilot the No. 25 EXIDE Batteries Toyota Tundra at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to go back to Randy Moss Motorsports and race with my old team,” commented Washington native Malsam. “When we parted ways it was on good terms and I’m still friends with the guys on the team so it’s like I’m going back to race with family. Exide is a fantastic sponsor; we had a great time working together last season and I’m looking forward to having them on my Toyota Tundra at Las Vegas [Motor Speedway]. Hopefully we can pick up right where we left off and race for the win on Saturday night.”

Despite a new number on the side of his Toyota Tundra, Malsam will compete with many of the same team members that he raced with during his rookie campaign including crew chief Doug Wolcott.

“It’s going to be great to have Tayler back behind the wheel of our Toyota Tundra,” said Wolcott. “We had a lot of success with Tayler throughout the 2009 season—10 top-10 finishes and finished just outside the top-10 [in 12th] in the season point standings. There is no doubt that Tayler is a talented driver; he gives great feedback to help us make the adjustments we need on the truck and knows how to get up on the wheel. Our guys have worked hard to prepare a great truck for the race at Las Vegas [Motor Speedway] and I think you’ll see us racing near the front of the field before the night is over on Saturday.”

Randy Moss Motorsports started the season as a two-truck organization but took a brief three-week hiatus to regroup and prepare for Malsam’s return to the No. 25 Exide Batteries Toyota Tundra. Malsam is expected to be behind the wheel of the No. 25 Toyota Tundra again before the 2010 season concludes, stay tuned for race dates and sponsor information.

RHUSAF’s motto is Semper Ducimus, which translates to “we always lead.” Peters hopes to make that his personal motto on Saturday night. The RHUSAF flag will also be flying on the #17 pit box during the race. That flag has flown during combat in 18 different countries and will fly for the last time on Saturday night before being laid to rest as a gift to the Commander of the RHUSAF upon his retirement.

Timothy Peters on racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway “ I like Las Vegas Motor Speedway a lot. It’s probably because we had a good run there and finished top-five last year. We just need to keep the momentum on our side. We are aware of the points battle but as a team we are really focusing on getting more wins before the season is over. We will be going for the win each week but also need to make sure we are not doing anything stupid and we can still get the top-five and top-10 finishes we need. I’m very honored to have the Red Horse Squadron on board with us this week. We are looking forward to seeing what they do at Nellis and then showing them what we do at the track.”

Jeff Hensley on racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway “Vegas is a special place for me because I was able to visit Victory Lane there in 2006. I would love to get this team back there. We are taking our Chicago truck and it ran really well that night, we were in the top-five all night until we lost the engine. That gives me a lot of confidence this truck will be good again this weekend and we can hopefully get us another win.”

Equipment Information Timothy Peters will compete with chassis #85 in The Smith’s Food and Drug Stores 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. This chassis was last raced at Chicagoland Speedway where Peters started 15th and finished 21st due to an engine failure.

Timothy Peters Seeks Sponsorship Partner Peters is still seeking sponsorship for his #17 Toyota Tundra. Red Horse Racing is currently running the #17 without primary sponsorship. For more information on sponsorship opportunities please contact Tom DeLoach at 704-662-0039.

  • Ken Schrader Truck Series Advance: Las Vegas Motor Speedway

WELCOME BACK SCHRADER: Ken Schrader will return to the No. 2 Chevrolet Silverado for this weekend’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (LVMS). The Smith’s Food & Drug Stores 350 will mark Schrader’s sixth Truck Series start for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) in 2010. In his five previous starts for the team, Schrader has five consecutive top-10 finishes, including two top fives at Texas Motor Speedway in May and Iowa Speedway in July. Schrader has an average start of 8.6 and an average finish of 7.6 in KHI equipment this season.

STILL A WINNER: Schrader has been close to visiting victory lane in the Truck Series this year, but is still looking to close the deal and take the checkered flag in the No. 2 Kroger Chevrolet. However, Schrader has been a winner many times over in 2010. In addition to his part-time Truck Series schedule, Schrader has run over 60 short-track races this season in Late Models and Modifieds, winning a dozen of them at 11 different tracks. Additionally, he has run one Sprint Cup Series race, one Nationwide Series race, and competed in two ARCA Racing Series events as well, bringing his total to more than 70 races in 2010. That is the equivalent of running the complete Truck Series schedule 2.8 times in nine months.

TURNING BLUE: The No. 2 Chevrolet Silverado will be turning blue with a brand new paint scheme for LVMS. For the first time, longtime partner Kroger will take the spotlight as primary sponsor of the No. 2 in Las Vegas. Kroger’s West Coast retail operation and race sponsor Smith’s Food & Drug Stores will also be represented on the truck’s tonneau cover in support of the entitlement.

THOUGHTS FROM THE DRIVER: Ken Schrader

What are your thoughts going into the race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway?

“I always look forward to going to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It’s a beautiful facility and a great town to have a race in. I feel really good about everything the No. 2 team has done this season, so I know we’ll have a great performance there. I’m also very excited to be representing Kroger and their partner, Smith’s Food & Drug Stores, so hopefully we can keep our top-10 streak alive and get a win for them while we’re at it.”

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: With new sponsor JEGS.com on board as primary sponsor, Kevin Harvick battled hard for 175 laps with eventual race winner Kyle Busch to finish third in TheRaceDayRaffleSeries.com 175 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 2 team will utilize chassis No. 042 this weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Chassis No. 042 was most recently driven by Schrader to a 10th-place finish at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway in August. Chassis No. 42 has been driven to victory lane twice in 2010, once by KHI co-owner Kevin Harvick at Atlanta Motor Speedway in March and once by Elliott Sadler in his first-career Truck Series win at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway.

Home of the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship team, KHI enters 2010 in its seventh full year of competition with two full-time Truck Series teams and one full-time Nationwide Series team. Four-time Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday returns to the helm of the No. 33 Truck team looking for his fifth title and third championship for KHI (2009 and 2007), while Sprint Cup series stars Kevin Harvick and Elliott Sadler guide the No. 2 Truck team. • Ron Hornaday Advance: Las Vegas Motor Speedway Advance

ROLLING SNAKE EYES FOR THE FIRST TIME: Ron Hornaday is the winningest driver in the Truck Series with 46 career wins to date. However, in nine attempts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway he has yet to put a tally in the win column. Las Vegas joins Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Michigan International Raceway, Iowa Speedway, Pocono (Pa.) International Raceway, Chicagoland Speedway and Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway as the only tracks on the current Truck Series schedule in which Hornaday has not recorded a win.

EPIC BATTLES: Although Hornaday has not recorded a win at the 1.5-mile D-shaped oval, he has experienced some epic championship battles on the hallowed grounds of famous sin city. His first ever Truck Series championship was decided at the final race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 1996. Two years later he found himself in the same situation, this time fighting rival Jack Sprague and it came down to the final laps. Sprague won the race, and Hornaday finished second to take the title by a mere three points. To this day, it is still the closest championship title race in Truck Series history.

AUCTIONEER: While in Las Vegas, Hornaday and fellow Truck Series competitor Mike Skinner will make their way to the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino to attend a live taping of Barrett- Jackson. The Barrett-Jackson Auction Company was established in 1971 and is headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. Barrett-Jackson specializes in providing products and services to classic and collector car owners, astute collectors and automotive enthusiasts around the world.

TO THE LEFT, TO THE LEFT: According to NASCAR’s Loop Data statistics no other driver has made more passes in turns one and two at Las Vegas Motor Speedway than Hornaday. When making his way up through the field, Hornaday’s corners of choice for moving past competitors are the first two, and he has made 50 passes in these two turns over the last five Las Vegas Motor Speedway Truck Series events.

Notes from the Professor: Quotes from Ron Hornaday:

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON GOING TO LAS VEGAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY?

“I have come really close to winning at Vegas and this year we have a really good shot at it. We have run pretty well at the 1.5-mile tracks. I really would like to mark this one off my list, since this will mark my 10th visit to the track.”

WHERE DOES LAS VEGAS RANK AMONG ALL THE TRACKS THE TRUCK SERIES VISITS?

“Las Vegas is a special place. I always say that my favorite race tracks are the ones I win at, but this one ranks up there very close. I have been so fortunate in my racing career. In the mid to late 90’s, Sprague and I had a good battle going. I won the first championship, then he won one, then I won my second. The cool part was every year I won the championship he won the race here in Vegas. I have some really good memories from there.”

CHASSIS HISTORY: The No. 33 E-Z-GO team will take chassis No. 047 to Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Chassis No. 047 is a brand-new chassis which has not yet seen a lap of competition.

PREVIOUS RACE RECAP: Last weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Hornaday and the No. 33 team recorded a 24th-place finish following a late-race tangle with a lapped truck where Hornaday sustained left-front fender damage. Following the incident, Hornaday and Timothy Peters got together on the race track, sending Hornaday into the outside retaining wall, ending the day for the No. 33 truck.
