  • Shoutout of the week-Daytona

    Shoutout of the week-Daytona

In a new column at Speedway Media, I will be giving shoutouts of the week to feature memorable drivers, teams and events.

Here’s the first shoutout of the week and a bonus one as well.

In this week’s shoutout of the week, we’ll highlight Josh Reaume who is the owner of his own team in the Truck Series, Reaume Brothers Racing, that fields the No. 33. Reaume might be the one that got lost in the shuffle when the race was all said and done at Daytona.

While there were only nine trucks that finished the race, Reaume played his cards right and earned a career-best finish of sixth and the first ever top-10 finish of his career. During the span of Reaume career, he’s made 28 starts throughout five years.

Last year, Reaume only made 12 starts with a best finish of 18th at Gateway last summer. He missed the field last year at Daytona, but got redemption this past weekend to finish sixth. It really says, anyone can win given the right opportunity.

Reaume came close last Friday night but was happy with his finish. Daytona is where careers are made or broken and his sixth-place finish may help get more publicity for him and his team.

The bonus shoutout of the week is DraftKings who have added the Truck Series to their fantasy lineup.

The Truck Series, in most cases, has been the most exciting series in the past few years. And, while some of the finishes are remembered, most of them are forgotten unless you attended the event yourself or an especially memorable moment happened during the race.

Using DraftKings could help bring in more fans to the Truck Series and more people to the races. The series is already off to a good start, where Kids 12 and under get in free to the Xfinity and Truck Series races. Perhaps, DraftKings will add more excitement from a series perspective.

Last year, the Truck Series literally had exciting races all year round, but the races only get talked about in that day’s event and maybe a couple of days after for press material. Take, for example, Natalie Decker whose truck caught on fire on Lap 1 when she came down pit road after running over something. The Twitter machine exploded with memes and all sorts of other happenings.

Or let’s go back two years ago at Gateway, where John Wes Townley and Spencer Gallagher got into a fight. On that weekend and for a couple of weeks, it was the most talked about topic in the world of NASCAR, as well as appearing on national sports shows. The fight is brought up every now and then, but that’s it.

The Truck Series isn’t your typical water cooler talk at work on Mondays, unless you were there for one of the races and someone asks you about it, or something major happens as I listed above, but the Truck Series does have a decent fan base and a great following.

However, DraftKings is a good place to start to bring more attention to the series, possibly bring in more fans and gain more popularity. It will take a couple of years, but perhaps one day, the Truck Series might be watercooler talk on Mondays.

  • Chad Finley readies first Truck Series start of 2019 at Atlanta

Chad Finley readies first Truck Series start of 2019 at Atlanta

HAMPTON, Ga. – Cheering on his Chad Finley Racing (CFR) teammate Robby Lyons last weekend at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, Chad Finley is ready to take the wheel of his No. 42 Air Lift Company | Auto Value Certified Service Centers Chevrolet Silverado in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) for Saturday afternoon’s Atlanta 200.

Finley’s first start of 2019 will give the chance for Dewitt, Mich. native to not only make his Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway debut – but an opportunity to earn his second career top-10 in just his sixth series’ start.

“I can’t wait to get to Atlanta in our No. 42 Air Lift Company | Auto Value Certified Service Centers Chevrolet Silverado this weekend,” said Finley. “It’s been a while since I’ve been in a truck, but we’ve made a lot of changes since October and I think those changes will peek in our performance on Saturday afternoon.”

Finley pointed to the speed of No. 42 Chevrolet during last Friday night’s NextEra Energy Resources 250 at the “World Center of Racing.”

Having to qualify their truck on-time, the team not only stepped up to the challenge but did it solidly. And while the race didn’t go as the team hoped – being swallowed in an early race accident, Finley is ready to take the reins and help earn the team a solid finish before handing the steering wheel back to Lyons next weekend at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway.

“Teamwork has never been as important as it is right now,” explained Finley. “Everyone is digging deep, putting in the hours all for the love and the opportunity to win a NASCAR race. Atlanta is a difficult track, but a place that I think we can run very well at. We just have to take what we can get and roll from there.

“I think we proved in Daytona that we have improved our program. We suffered a lot of heartbreak at the end of last season. We impressed in our debut at Gateway – but we had bad luck after that. Since our last race at Martinsville, we went back to the drawing board, made the investments and have found some really good people to work with Bruce. So far, the hard work is paying off.”

Knowing the abrasiveness of Atlanta’s 1.54-mile track, Finley is hoping his prior experience at tracks where tire management was critical will fit into his driving style – all while adapting to Atlanta’s fast speeds and breathtaking action.

“The first place I think of when it comes to Atlanta is Rockingham,” added Finley. “I know the tracks are completely different – but the mindset is still the same. Within a few laps, the lap times slow down significantly and you can find yourself not only having to race the track – but your competitors too.

“My crew chief Bruce (Cook) also has plenty of experience at Atlanta and with his guidance and our commitment, I think we can earn our first top-10 finish of the year on Saturday and take some momentum to Las Vegas.”

Air Lift Company and Auto Value Certified Service Centers will serve as the primary marketing partners for Saturday afternoon’s double-header event with the NASCAR Xfinity Series Rinnai 250.

Finley also has additional support from Northsidetowing.net and XLT Engineering as well for the second race of the season.

In addition to his five prior Truck starts, Finley, 26, has 20 ARCA Menards Series starts to his credit.

In his years of ARCA competition between 2009 and 2018 Finley has mounted one-win (Nashville 2017), eight top-five and 11 top-10 finishes, including a pole (track record) at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway in 2009.

Finley is the son of former ARCA winner and NASCAR driver Jeff Finley.
The Ultimate Tailgating 200 (130 laps| 200.2 miles) is the second of 23 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series races on the 2019 schedule. Practice begins on Fri., Feb. 22 from 2:00 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. A final practice session is set for 4:00 p.m. – 4:50 p.m. Qualifying is set for race day, Sat., Feb. 23 beginning at 10:40 a.m. The 32-truck field will take the green flag shortly after 4:30 p.m. with live coverage on FOX Sports 1, the Motor Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Satellite Radio, Channel 90).

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 20, 2019) – The NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series will be back in action this weekend as teams head to Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway for the Atlanta 200. DGR-Crosley will field two trucks in the competition: the No. 17 Ceco Building Systems Toyota Tundra for Anthony Alfredo and the No. 54 N29 Technologies Tundra for Natalie Decker.

Alfredo, a 19-year-old Ridgefield, Conn. native, is set to make his national series debut on Saturday in the Atlanta 200. Alfredo and his No. 17 DGR-Crosley team recently tested at Atlanta Motor Speedway, giving the Truck Series Rookie Contender valuable time behind the wheel of a Tundra at the mile and a half track. Longtime DGR-Crosley employee, Chris Lawson will call the shots for Alfredo atop the pit box while former Cup spotter David Keith will guide him from the spotter stand.

Alfredo most recently raced in NASCAR K&N Pro Series East before joining DGR-Crosley. In 2018, he collected one win, five top-five and nine top-10 finishes during the 14 race season. Alfredo is also actively involved in the prestigious NASCAR Next program which highlights emerging up-and-coming racecar drivers.

Decker will be back in action at Atlanta Motor Speedway, after making her Truck Series debut last weekend. The Atlanta 200 will mark the 21-year-old Eagle River, Wis. native’s first Truck Series start on a mile and a half track, as well as her first time racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Decker has six previous speedway starts which occurred in the ARCA Racing Series. In those six starts, she has one top-10 and has an average finish of 12th-place. Decker will have the same team behind her in Atlanta with veteran crew chief, Frankie Kerr and Cup spotter, Kevin Hamlin.

The Atlanta 200 will be broadcast live on FS1 beginning at 4:00 p.m., ET.

Alfredo on Atlanta: “I’m excited to make my NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series debut this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It’ll be my first race at the national level, so I’m super pumped. My DGR-Crosley team has been working super hard getting my truck ready for me. I’m excited for the opportunity that I’ve been provided and I’m prepared to push the limits in my No. 17 Toyota Tundra and hopefully put together a solid run.

Decker on Atlanta: “Really bummed with how Daytona went for us. I was looking forward to getting some laps in my Toyota Tundra, but we are putting that behind us and shifting our focus on Atlanta. I’m really excited this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway because it will be my first trip to a mile and a half track in a truck. My teammate and the DGR-Crosley guys tested at Atlanta earlier this year. I’ve been studying film and preparing all week. I’m looking forward to getting down there and making some laps.”

    Quotes:

“Atlanta Motor Speedway is a track that I thoroughly enjoy. For a driver it takes a lot of patience since it’s rough and worn out. Atlanta is the type of track that I grew up racing on in late models around the country. Just knowing how to adapt to the track surface and how to manage your equipment to make sure you are there in the end is crucial. We had a solid finish last weekend at Daytona so we are looking to carry that momentum into this weekend.”

  • Anthony Alfredo to Make NASCAR Truck Series Debut at Atlanta

Anthony Alfredo to Make NASCAR Truck Series Debut at Atlanta

MOORESVILLE, N.C., February 19, 2019 (Newswire.com) – For Ridgefield, Connecticut native Anthony Alfredo, Feb. 23, 2019, will be forever remembered as the culmination of a dream. That date is when the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series takes to the track at Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Atlanta 200. Alfredo will make his first start in a NASCAR national series competition, racing a Toyota for top tier team DGR-Crosley.

The 19-year-old UNC-Charlotte student is stepping up the ladder after a year of competition in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series and the ARCA Racing Series, where he won one K&N Pro Series East race and showed plenty of speed throughout the season in both series. He has already tested with his new team at Atlanta and says he felt more comfortable in his first outing than he expected, giving him confidence going into his first race. “I think my team was a little bit surprised at my performance in the test,” he said. “And I think I surprised myself a little bit. It went well. Obviously, those were single-car runs, and I know that I am going to have a lot to learn about how the truck handles racing around other trucks, but we definitely felt satisfied with the progress we made at the test.”

Alfredo plans to compete in 13 of the 23 scheduled NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series races this season, with more starts possible if the funding can be put in place. Details of his schedule will be released shortly. “I’d love to be running a full season,” he explained. “But I’m just so thankful that we get to do over half of the schedule. It’s every young racer’s dream to compete in one of NASCAR’s national series, and I’m grateful to everyone who has helped and is helping me to be able to do that this year. We plan to use these 13 races to learn and show what we can do so that hopefully, we can get more sponsorship for this year or at least be able to put the ingredients in place to run a full season in 2020.”

His past racing exploits show that he is a quick learner. He won the Southeast Limited Late Model Series championship in his first full year of late model racing. He won in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East in his first year in a full-size stock car. He showed top five-speed in the ARCA Series in his limited number of starts there last year and he’s proven to be adaptable on tracks from tight 1/4-mile ovals to the larger, faster 1.5-mile speedways that ARCA and NASCAR race on.

Asked to step back a bit and talk about growing up in his hometown of Ridgefield, Connecticut, Alfredo smiled as he began to reflect. “I attended Scotland Elementary school growing up and East Ridge Middle School and studied religious education at St. Mary’s Church in Ridgefield. I only attended Ridgefield High School for a year as my racing career in legend cars to limited late models began and the heavy travel schedule to North Carolina forced me to miss so much school that I had to enroll in online High School with The Keystone School. I played lacrosse, football, and house basketball through elementary school and some in middle school, before making the transition to lacrosse year-round where I played in high school as a long stick midfielder for the freshman team. I had so much fun. I was always athletic. I took a break from racing at one point to focus on other sports. But eventually, it called me back. I am glad I made the decision to try it again because, with the help and support of my family and a lot of other amazing people, I am about to start a career in NASCAR. How unbelievable is that?”

Now, before his 20th birthday, he will have his chance to race against veterans like his team owner David Gilliland, multi-time champion Matt Crafton, former NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch and some of the most talented and proven young racers in NASCAR this season, beginning at Atlanta Motor Speedway. The Atlanta 200 is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday, Feb. 23. The race will be televised live on Fox Sports 1.

    New Marketing Partnership Announcement:

AFA Motorsports and driver Anthony Alfredo have joined forces with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation for the 2019 racing season to raise awareness through our unique racing sponsorship program. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for children battling pediatric brain tumors and other childhood cancers. Our program starts by adopting a child and making them an honorary pit crew member, but it’s not just for one race, it’s for as long as the child and family are in need of support and beyond. Our marketing partners have made a commitment to help us spread the word of encouragement throughout the racing community by showing support to children and families battling cancer. • Four takeaways from the NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series at Daytona

Four takeaways from the NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series at Daytona

The Truck Series returned to Daytona International Speedway this past weekend for its annual running of the NextEra  Energy Resources 250. As usual, the action didn’t disappoint and it was quite possibl, the best race of the whole week.

    1. Hattori Continues Truck Series Dominance/Starts Season On Right Track – Many people wondered what Hattori Racing would look like this season when the defending champion from that team didn’t have a ride for 2019 and wasn’t coming back. Insert Austin Hill who previously drove for Young’s Motorsports in previous races and had just 52 starts before he entered victory lane Friday night for the first time in the Truck Series. It seemed Hattori has made the right choice so far and it’ll be interesting to keep track if they continue their winning ways in 2019.
    2. Truck Series Best Race Of The Week – While it certainly was a wreckfest, the Truck Series was the best race of the week, as it had multiple lead changes and some exciting moves to increase your heart rate. There was side-by-side racing throughout the majority of the race. While only nine trucks finished on the lead lap and we had multiple big ones, it was still a great race aside from what we saw in the other series this past week.
    3. Angela Ruch Gets Top 10 Finish In Truck Series Return – While only nine trucks finished the race and she may get some backlash from fans that she got lucky, you should give credit where credit is due. Ruch avoided every wreck and found herself at the end for contention. However, handling issues with the truck prevented her from getting up there and challenging for the win. But what ifs come to mind. What if she didn’t have those handling issues? If she didn’t, then maybe we would be talking about a different story. But as the old saying goes, if wishes were fishes, the world would be an ocean.
    4. Drivers Get Career Night In Daytona – Daytona and yes Talladega is always the place for upsets, excitement, and good finishes. As a result, many drivers had a career night. Ross Chastain got his first top five after almost five years in the Truck Series, Josh Reaume got his first ever top-five finish, and Spencer Boyd earned his first top-five finish as well. Among the others was Bobby Gerhart despite a wrecked truck, Clay Greenfield, and Cory Roper who was running in the top five and was the underdog story before, unfortunately wrecking by himself .
