Speedway Motorsports, Inc. announces Weather Guarantee

CONCORD, N.C. – To ease weather-related worries about buying NASCAR race tickets, Speedway Motorsports, Inc. today announced a Fans First initiative that will have fans ‘singing in the rain’.

The Speedway Motorsports Weather Guarantee provides race fans the ultimate assurance in their NASCAR ticket investment. As part of the company’s new weather policy, if a NASCAR race is postponed due to weather and the ticket holder is unable to attend on the rescheduled date, a ticket credit can be issued toward a qualifying NASCAR race at any Speedway Motorsports venue. This initiative is valid for Atlanta Motor SpeedwayBristol Motor SpeedwayCharlotte Motor SpeedwayKentucky SpeedwayLas Vegas Motor SpeedwayNew Hampshire Motor SpeedwaySonoma Raceway and Texas Motor Speedway.

“Of all major professional sports, none is as heavily impacted by adverse weather as NASCAR,” said Speedway Motorsports’ President and CEO Marcus Smith. “With drivers already racing on the very edge at nearly 200 mph, even a little rain can have a dramatic impact on race weekend schedules. What we want to do is take weather out of the ticket-buying equation so fans can focus on having a great time and making memories on our premier NASCAR event weekends.”

Fans with an unused, eligible ticket will have 60 days from the original race date to request a ticket credit on a qualifying future event. The credit must be used toward another Speedway Motorsports’ NASCAR event within one calendar year of the original race date or the same event the following year, even if it takes place beyond the one-year mark. Certain restrictions may apply. Click here for further details on the Speedway Motorsports Weather Guarantee.

  • NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Preview-Michigan

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Preview-Michigan

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series continues their exciting season this week at the 2-mile racetrack, Michigan International Speedway, located in Brooklyn, Michigan and the competition gets even tighter with only two races left until the Playoffs begin. There are three drivers on the bubble; Matt Crafton, Grant Enfinger and Stewart Friesen.

Currently, there are 34 trucks entered on the preliminary entry list.

Here’s a look at who might end up in victory lane this weekend.

    1. Matt Crafton – Crafton has been very hungry this year in trying to end up in victory lane. It’s been a whole year now since he has a won race in the Truck Series. Crafton needs to punch his ticket to make the Playoffs and that could happen this weekend at Michigan. He is the most experienced active driver having competed in the past 16 starts dating back to 2002, in his first track start that year. In those 16 races, Crafton has three top fives and seven top-10 finishes, along with 63 laps led, four DNFs, an average start of 9.9 and an average finish of 14.2. He has three poles at the racetrack, but is still searching for his first elusive victory at Michigan. In the past five races, Crafton has finished sixth, seventh, sixth, second, and ninth. He currently sits right on the cutoff line at eighth. But this weekend could be the place he breaks through and snaps his long winless streak.
    2. Johnny Sauter – Sauter is the second most experienced veteran at the track. He has nine starts with one win, two top fives, three top-10 finishes, 47 laps led, an average start of 7.3 and an average finish of 11.8. His only victory at the track came in 2014 after starting fifth. In the previous race, Sauter started second, but finished 18th, finishing one lap down. It’s been somewhat of a win drought as well for the No. 21 GMS Racing team. It’s been six races since Sauter and the team visited victory lane, which was at Fort Worth.
    3. Grant Enfinger – Enfinger has only two starts at Michigan. But in those two starts, he has finished in the top-10. In his first outing with GMS Racing, Enfinger started ninth and finished eighth. In last year’s race, he started sixth and finished eighth. Enfinger also finished 10th in Stage 2. Enfinger could sneak his way into victory lane this weekend after having solid consecutive finishes in the past few races, especially after almost winning Eldora last month. The team is capable of winning and it’s only a matter of time before Enfinger heads back to victory lane.
    4. Noah Gragson – After sitting out Pocono a couple of weeks ago due to illness, Gragson will be back in the No. 18 Safelite Tundra at Michigan this weekend. He was devastated that he couldn’t compete at Pocono and had to sit out. Since winning at Kansas, Gragson has been close to winning again. In the past five races, he finished sixth at Eldora, eighth at Kentucky, fourth at Chicago, 10th at Gateway, and second at Iowa after almost winning. Gragson’s only start at Michigan came last year, starting fifth and finishing seventh. He also finished seventh and eighth in both stages, respectively.
    5. Ben Rhodes – Rhodes has just two starts at Michigan, all coming for ThorSport Racing since 2016. In those two starts, he finished sixth and 11th respectively. In the 2017 race, Rhodes started 14th and finished 11th, after finishing fourth and fifth, respectively in both stages. He has led four laps with an average finish of 8.5.

The NASCAR Truck Series has competed in the past 18 races dating back to the 1999 season. In those 18 starts, there have only been two repeat winners, which came from Greg Biffle in 1999 and 2000, and Travis Kvapil in 2004 and 2007. Since then, however,  there have been  16 different race winners. Those include Robert Pressley, Brendan Gaughan, Dennis Setzer, Johnny Benson, Erik Darnell, Colin Braun, Aric Almirola, Kevin Harvick, Nelson Piquet Jr, James Buescher, Johnny Sauter, Kyle Busch, Brett Moffitt, and Darrell Wallace Jr. The lowest in the field a race winner has come from to win is 11th back in 1999. The highest a race winner has ever come from is the pole in 2007.

There are two practice sessions scheduled for Friday afternoon. The first practice at 1:05 p.m. ET with the final practice at 3:05 p.m. ET, both on Fox Sports 1.

Qualifying is slated for Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. ET on Fox Sports 1 with race coverage beginning at 1 p.m. ET, live on Fox Sports 1 and MRN Radio. The scheduled green flag is 1:15 p.m. ET.

Stages will be broken up into 30/60/100 laps.

Team: No. 22 GO TEXAN | AM Technical Solutions Chevrolet Silverado
    Driver: Austin Wayne Self

    Follow the Team: @NieceMotorsport; @AustinWSelf

Self on Racing at Michigan: “I’ve always enjoyed racing at Michigan,” said Self. “It’s a big track where speed is at a premium. Handling is just as critical with a good motor. The track was repaved several years ago, and the preferred lines are slowing widening out.

“You can use the straightaway speeds to get yourself in a position to make that pass. It can be sketchy on restarts – but that makes it exciting for the fans. For us, it’s like a mini-restrictor plate race and that will provide excitement and drama from the drop of the green flag to the checkered flag.”

Self at Michigan: Self has two NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) starts at Michigan International Speedway to his credit. His best finish of 15th came last season.

In addition to his two NCWTS starts at the track, Self also has two ARCA Racing Series starts at Michigan International Speedway, both of which resulted in top-10 finishes. His best finish of 3rd came in 2015.

Recapping Pocono: Self and the No. 22 team earned an 18th-place finish at Pocono Raceway.

“I’m happy to bring home the truck in one piece, even though we struggled trying to get the speed we wanted out of our No. 22 Chevrolet Silverado.

“However, we will build on this and move forward and vow to be stronger at Michigan.”

On The Truck: The Texas Department of Agriculture’s GO TEXAN program and AM Technical Solutions will support Self.

GO TEXAN represents Texas agri-business on state, national and international levels by building recognition with the GO TEXAN mark.

Along with its signature mark in the shape of Texas, GO TEXAN celebrates, promotes and supports the business savvy and plainspoken grit Texas agriculture is known throughout the world.

Fontaine on Racing at Michigan: “I really enjoyed racing at Michigan and I’m excited to get back there again,” said Fontaine. “It’s a fast race track and can be line sensitive. Even though the truck and ARCA car are different, I feel like my experience there should give me some good footing for this weekend’s race.

“Cody (Efaw, crew chief) and I have really been able to build on some momentum the last couple of weeks, even if we haven’t had the finishes to show for it. When it comes to the race on Saturday – the style should be similar to Daytona and Las Vegas – two races we did very well at the beginning of the year.

“I have some of the hardest working guys and gals in the garage,” Fontaine added. “Our team has a lot of heart and passion — all with the same goal. The encouraging part for our team is that we’ve been able to showcase our speed lately – now we just need to work harder to execute better and that’s exactly what we have planned for Michigan.”

Fontaine at Michigan: Saturday’s race at Michigan International Speedway will mark Fontaine’s first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start at the two-mile track.

Fontaine has one ARCA Racing Series start at Michigan International Speedway, a 26th-place finish, which came last season.

Recapping Pocono: Fontaine and the No. 45 team earned a 17th-place finish at Pocono Raceway.

“We made some gains throughout the race and even used some strategy at the end of Stage 2 to get some stage points – but we just couldn’t get the truck to rotate that would allow us to contend for a stronger finish during Stage 3.

“Still, a solid top-20 finish is a good rebound from Eldora and we’ll continue to work hard at the shop and look for a top-15 run at Michigan.”

On the Truck: Fontaine’s No. 45 Chevrolet will carry the ProMATIC Automation, Inc. colors in this week’s race. ProMATIC Automation, Inc. specializes in the design and build of custom factory automation equipment.

ProMATIC Automation, Inc. has extensive experience in the integration of high-level automation technologies like robotics, laser, vision, and dispensing systems along with many years of combined experience in the design and machining of custom manufactured components.

JJL Motorsports welcomes returning marketing partner and new partner for upcoming Bristol Truck Series race

SHERRILLS FORD, N.C. – Set to continue their impressive presence on the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) tour, JJL Motorsports officials announced today that the Wings Over North Georgia Air Show (WONG) presented by Parker FiberNet will return as the team’s primary marketing partner for Jesse Little at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway on Thurs., Aug. 17.

Noted as North Georgia’s No. 1 fall family event, the seventh annual Wings Over North Georgia Air Show returns October 13-14 at Rome’s Russell Regional Airport.

The air show will feature an elite lineup of world-class military and civilian performers, static aircraft displays and premium infield camping.

The U.S. Air Force. F-22 Raptor and A-10 Thunderbolt demonstration teams are featured performers and will serve as co-headliners for the two-day event.

JJL Motorsports and WONG paired for the second Truck Series race of the season at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway, where the NASCAR Next alumnus contended for the win – before a late race restart in overtime shuffled the second-generation driver through the field – before soldiering back to an impressive eighth-place result.
“I’m very excited to have the support of the Wings Over North Georgia Air Show at Bristol Motor Speedway in a couple weeks,” said Little. “The speed and finesse of air shows is something that I can easily match to racing in NASCAR. I’m an adrenaline junkie, so I’m excited about having the chance to work with their great staff again.”

In addition to Wings Over North Georgia Air Show, JJL Motorsports also welcomes the Visit Kingsport campaign who will serve as an associate marketing partner for the 16th Truck Series race of the season.
Because of its legendary hospitality and first-rate amenities, popular attractions and visitor accommodations, Kingsport is perfect venue for any occasion.

“It’s great to have the support of a local organization like Visit Kingsport,” added Little. “It’s a town where there’s a lot of community events and attractions and always does their share to promote the Bristol NASCAR weekends. We’re excited to have them aboard.”

Little and his JJL Motorsports plan to be active on their social media channels leading up to Bristol, including offering free tickets to the Wings Over North Georgia Air Show and more.

In addition to Wings Over North Georgia Air Show, and Visit Kingsport (Tennessee), G-FORCE Transmission and Gears, Performance Friction Brakes, Penske Shocks and Racing Electronics will all serve as associate marketing partners for Bristol.
The UNOH 200 is set for Thurs., Aug. 16 with coverage on FOX, the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and SiriusXM Satellite Radio Channel 90. Event coverage begins at 8:30 p.m. (ET).

    Michigan Stats
    3 starts, Best Finish: 20th (2015 & 2016)
    Season Stats
    14 starts, 6 top-10, 9 top-15 finishes

    Notes:

    – Coughlin will utilize chassis no. 312 this weekend at Michigan. This chassis has been run two previous times in 2018, most recently at Kentucky (12th), as well as earlier in the season at Texas (eighth).

    – Aside from his three previous NCWTS starts at the 2-mile D-shaped track, Coughlin has two previous starts at Michigan in the ARCA Racing Series, collecting two top-15 finishes.

    – This week, Coughlin will be named an official NASCAR ambassador of DAV (Disabled American Veterans), a nonprofit charity dedicated to providing a lifetime of help to disabled American veterans and their families. Honored to be chosen to represent DAV, Coughlin’s No. 2 JEGS.com Chevy will carry the organization’s logo, as well as #BlessAVet, DAV’s current initiative. #BlessAVet is an initiative launched in partnership with DAV, Fandango, and the film “God Bless the Broken Road” where people can contribute to send a veteran to dinner and to go see “God Bless the Broken Road,” which releases Sept. 7th, a film in which Coughlin is a part of as well. For anyone interested in contributing to #BlessAVet, please visit https://blessavet.com.

    – After a weekend off on the NCWTS schedule, Coughlin remains 10th in the driver point standings.

    Quote:

“There’s just so much grip with the trucks at every track we race at that it’s hard to tell if the surface at Michigan (International Speedway) has aged a whole lot since it’s repave. I don’t really know if this year we’ll be able to move around a whole lot more than in the past. I do know though that momentum is going to be big there, especially with the new engines we run. My guess is that we’ll run in the middle of the track up to the top groove. The draft is going to be big as well, especially for making moves. So if I get a big run, I’ll try make a pass on the bottom lane, but only if the timing of the run is right. My main thing is to take advantage of those in front of me who may be bogged down in traffic and make those spots up as quickly as I can so I can keep my momentum rolling.

“Since Pocono (Raceway), the No. 2 team and I sat down to come up with a game plan for moving forward. We’ve had fast trucks all season but have just come up short of the finishes that we think we deserve. Both Jerry (Baxter, crew chief) and myself are really excited about how the meeting went and the JEGS.com team is optimistic about how the last half of the season will go.”

Johnny Sauter, No. 21 ISM Connect Chevrolet Silverado
    Michigan Stats
    9 starts, 1 win, 2 top-fives, 3 top-10s
    2018 Season Stats
    14 starts, 4 wins, 10 top-fives, 11 top-10s

    Notes:

    – Sauter will pilot GMS chassis no. 306 at Michigan International Speedway. The No. 21 team has raced this chassis twice this season, with Sauter earning his fourth win of the season in this particular Chevrolet at Texas Motor Speedway.

    – For the final race of NASCAR’s Kids Drive NASCAR initiative, the No. 21 ISM Connect Chevrolet will feature the names of Sauter’s children (Penn, Paige, Anne and Alice), as well as the names of the children of GMS Racing and GMS Fabrication employees.

    – Sauter is locked into The Playoffs with four wins and has 22 Playoff Points. He holds a 65-point lead over Noah Gragson in the driver championship point standings.

    Quotes:

“I think a little bit differently than some others about Michigan. A lot of drivers say it’s starting to race like a superspeedway but I think it’s turned into more of a handling track, at least for me personally it has. Last year I felt like we went with more of a low drag package and really had speed in practice but in the race it was so loose I couldn’t drive it. I think this year we’ll err on the side of handling. I know it’s a big race track and you carry a lot of speed but it will separate especially if you get a little longer into a run, 10-12 laps, the handling issues come into play and grip is a premium. So, that’s what we’re going to focus on this year and hopefully it works out for us.”

Justin Haley, No. 24 Fraternal Order of Eagles Chevrolet Silverado
    Michigan Stats
    1 start, 1 top-10
    Season Stats
    14 starts, 1 win, 5 top-fives, 10 top-10 finishes

    Notes:

    – The No. 24 team will unload chassis no. 305 at Michigan this weekend. Haley has raced this chassis four times during the 2018 NCWTS season, most recently at Chicagoland Speedway, collecting one top-five, two top-10 and three top-15 finishes with it.

    – Collecting another solid top-five finish when the NCWTS was last on track at Pocono, Haley has moved up to seventh in the driver point standings and remains locked in to The Playoffs with his win at Gateway in June.

    Quote:

“Michigan (International Speedway) is different. It’s one of those tracks that’s bumpy and you run along the wall down the frontstretch. With these new motors, they like to be wound up, so that should play in well to this weekend’s race. It’s a track that produces good racing and it’s all about timing big runs.

“I know last year we struggled a bit at Michigan and it was one of the final races before the cutoff, so we gambled to get the win and lock in. Thankfully this year, that’s not the case. We’re already locked in, so now we can focus on running this race like we would usually attack any other race weekend.”

Dalton Sargeant, No. 25 Performance Plus Motor Oil Chevrolet Silverado

This will be Sargeant’s first NCWTS start at Michigan International Speedway.
    2018 Season Stats
    14 starts, 1, top-five, 4 top-10s, 9 top-15s

    Notes:

    – Sargeant will pilot GMS chassis no. 303 at Michigan International Speedway. This chassis has been used seven times this season, including mostly recently at Kentucky Speedway en route to a ninth-place finish.

    – The Boca Raton, Fla., native is coming off a career-best third-place finish at Pocono Raceway.

    – Sargeant has two previous ARCA Racing Series starts at Michigan, with one top-five (3rd in 2017) and two top-10 finishes.

    – The 20-year-old is currently 11th in the driver championship point standings after 14 races.

    Quote:

“Michigan is another track where I’ve done well in the ARCA Racing Series, but this will be my first time in a truck there. I think drafting is going to be really big in the Truck Series there. It was important in the ARCA cars but not as important as what we’ll see this week. I’ll have to time my runs really well to be able to get around guys. Like most of the tracks I’m seeing for the first time in a truck, I’ll have to rely on my teammates – Johnny (Sauter) & Justin (Haley) – and what they’ve experienced there. Johnny is one of the best when it comes to Michigan, along with some others, so their advice will be a big help.

“The Performance Plus Motor Oil team has come a long way in the last few weeks, for several reasons, and I’m excited to see where this momentum takes us.”

  • Jim France assumes role of interim chairman and chief executive officer of NASCAR

Jim France assumes role of interim chairman and chief executive officer of NASCAR

    Staff Report | NASCAR.com

NASCAR issued the following statement Monday afternoon: “Brian France has taken an indefinite leave of absence from NASCAR as chairman and chief executive officer. Effective immediately, NASCAR Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President Jim France has assumed the role of interim chairman and chief executive officer.”

Jim France grew up in the early years of stock car racing, living and learning every detail of the sport from his own experiences, and from his father Bill France Sr., the founder and first president of NASCAR, and brother Bill Jr., NASCAR’s former president, chairman and CEO.

    Jim France

Joining ISC in 1959, France worked in all phases of operations in his early years with the company.

He was elected to the ISC board in 1970 and has served as the company’s secretary, assistant treasurer, vice president, chief operating officer, executive vice president and president.

France has been involved in motorsports most of his life. In addition to stock cars, he has also been a strong supporter of both sports car and motorcycle racing in the United States, evident by his professional involvement in those sports. In 1999, he founded GRAND-AM Road Racing; in 2012, he was the driving force behind the merger of GRAND-AM and the American Le Mans Series, which will begin operation as one entity in 2014.

France has served as a board member for ACCUS (Automobile Competition Committee of the United States). France was on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1969-1970, serving in Vietnam.

France was born and raised in Daytona Beach, Florida, and graduated from Seabreeze High School. He attended Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, and earned a business degree in 1968.

  • France’s Arrest Damaging to NASCAR’s Image

France’s Arrest Damaging to NASCAR’s Image

This week should have been a good week in NASCAR. Chase Elliott, the second coming of Dale Earnhardt Jr., finally won a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race after 99 starts, of which eight of them ended with Elliott in the runner-up spot.

A young, personable, talented individual finally made it to Victory Lane and the whole racing world rejoiced. It certainly helped that the win was attained in dramatic fashion, as Elliott held off last season’s Cup champion Martin Truex Jr., who is arguably one of the best in the business right now. This was a win that could have been marketed to NASCAR’s benefit, drawing in numbers the sport needs.

Instead, on Monday, the racing world receives a report that NASCAR Chairman and CEO (and the grandson of the founder of NASCAR, might I add), was arrested on a DUI charge in the Hamptons; he also happened to be in possession of Oxycodone to boot. Allegedly, according to TMZ.com who first reported the arrest, during the stop France acted in a belligerent manner, name-dropping his relationship with President Donald Trump and asking, “Do you know who I am?”

France doesn’t hold an ownership stake in NASCAR, serving instead at the behest of his uncle Jim France and sister Lesa France Kennedy. But on the business side of things, France is the face of the sport. He is the face of a sport that touts a rigorous drug testing program, a sport that involves driving vehicles at high rates of speed, mind you, a sport that several Fortune 500 companies have poured billions of dollars in over the course of the years, at that.

The arrest report of France’s traffic stop

Some of these sponsors may stay, and if so, great. They may pay at a lower cost because there is no question that on the business side of things, considering that NASCAR is up for sale, all hands are on deck in damage control mode to keep as many advertisers as possible involved in the sport. It’s easy to speculate how much money this arrest has cost the sport, because who wants to be involved in a motorsport where the Chairman has no qualms about operating a vehicle under the influence? What does that tell potential buyers and advertisers?

It’s easy to be angry, to spout doom and gloom on what was supposed to be a happy week. It’s easy to be angry at France because each year thousands are injured or killed in accidents caused by drivers who are under the influence. But it’s also easy to have pity on France. Rumors have carried on for years that he had a substance abuse issue, and although they were easy to dismiss as rumors, this arrest does add a validity to them. This may have been an isolated incident. It may have been a sign of his rumored addiction. But given his conduct and questionable decisions over the course of his tenure as NASCAR CEO, it can be speculated that France does need help and on that note, he should take it.

The ramifications of this arrest have yet to be seen, but they will arrive and they will not be pretty. Aside from the obvious jokes and vitriol across social media (let’s keep in mind that the target demographic NASCAR’s been trying to reach will be too busy laughing at them to even care), there will be the ever-present loss of money, another problem that the sport does not need.

NASCAR has been quick and efficient with the damage control so far, issuing this statement shortly after news of France’s arrest broke:

“Brian France has taken an indefinite leave of absence from NASCAR as chairman and chief executive officer. Effective immediately, NASCAR Vice Chairman and Executive Vice President Jim France has assumed the role of interim chairman and chief executive officer.”

Shortly after, Brian France issued this statement:

“I apologize to our fans, our industry and my family for the impact of my actions last night. Effective immediately, I will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from my position to focus on my personal affairs.”

It looks that NASCAR has realized that instead of carrying on like everything is okay, it would be best for all involved if France were to step down. He needs to step away, seek help or treatment, and tend to his own issues. NASCAR will need recover from this, meanwhile, and if they play their cards right they will.
