NASCAR Announces 2020 Schedule Through Cup Series Regular Season Finale Weekend

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 8, 2020) – NASCAR today announced its schedule of events through August for all three national series and the ARCA Menards Series, which includes two additional NASCAR Cup Series doubleheaders, and two separate stops – on two different courses – at Daytona International Speedway.

The NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series and ARCA Menards Series will visit Michigan International Speedway Aug. 7-9, featuring a Cup Series doubleheader on Saturday, Aug. 8 (4 p.m. ET, NBCSN) and Sunday, Aug. 9 (4:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN). Meanwhile, the NASCAR Xfinity Series will visit Road America on Saturday, Aug. 8 at noon ET (NBCSN).

For the first time, the NASCAR Cup Series will race on the storied road course at Daytona International Speedway during the August 14-16 weekend. The road course-oval hybrid, most noted for the annual running of the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA, will feature races across all three national series and the ARCA Menards Series. The historic races will replace NASCAR’s annual visit to Watkins Glen International.

FS1 will continue to carry coverage of the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series throughout the balance of the season. As part of the 2020 revised schedule, World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, which was originally slated to host the first race of the Gander Trucks playoffs, will now become race number 14 of the regular season on Sunday, Aug. 30 at noon ET.

NASCAR’s modified event procedures and protocols have been finalized in accordance with public health officials, medical experts and local, state and federal officials. NASCAR will determine if fans are allowed entrance to NASCAR Cup Series races on a market-by-market basis, in accordance with local and state guidelines.

More details on additional NASCAR national series events, including the playoffs, will be announced at a later date.

STATESVILLE, N.C. – (June 9, 2020) – GMS Racing announced the addition of Chase Purdy to the driver lineup for five races in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series in 2020. The NASCAR Next alum will make his season debut in the No. 24 Bama Buggies Silverado at Pocono Raceway on June 27.

In addition to Pocono, Purdy will pilot the No. 24 for GMS Racing at Kentucky Speedway, both Kansas Speedway events as well as Talladega Superspeedway.

“I know I’m definitely going to need to get acclimated again. I would like to take a practice session to get warmed up and everything, if we’re allowed. If we just line up and race I just want to settle in at first and make real adjustments as we go. My goal initially would be to keep the truck in one piece and finish in the top 10.”

Purdy amassed 10 top-five and 14 top-10 finishes en route to a fourth-place finish in the championship standings. 2018 also marked Purdy’s Gander Trucks debut, competing at Martinsville and Phoenix with current GMS Racing crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz atop the pit box.

Grant Enfinger captures Vet Tix/Camping World 200 win at Atlanta in overtime

    By Holly Cain
    NASCAR Wire Service

** Editor’s Note: The story/results reflect the disqualification of Johnny Sauter and the No. 13 ThorSport Racing Ford after post-race inspection at Atlanta Motor Speedway

HAMPTON, Ga. (June 6, 2020) — Grant Enfinger muscled the lead from Austin Hill on a two-lap overtime restart to claim the victory in Saturday afternoon’s Vet Tix/Camping World 200 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

It was especially heartbreaking for Hill, a Georgia native, who had been so vocal about wanting to win at his “home track” and late in Saturday’s race looked destined to hold the trophy – bettering the afternoon’s most dominant drivers, NASCAR Cup Series regulars Kyle Busch and another Georgia favorite Chase Elliott, in the waning laps and leading 36 laps on the afternoon; second only to Busch’s race best 37 laps out front.

Ironically, it was Elliott who caused the final caution with three laps remaining, spinning out while making his way forward to challenge for the lead. During the caution period, the front-running trucks all pitted for fresh tires and Hill returned to the track for the two-lap overtime test as the race leader – only to have Enfinger pull alongside and then make the pass in Turn 1 as the field came around for the last lap.

“It was definitely wild that’s for sure,’’ said Enfinger, who started sixth on that final two-lap green flag run. “We didn’t lead too many laps, but we led the ones that counted.’’

It marks the second victory of the season for Enfinger and his No. 98 ThorSport Racing Ford, which finished .215-seconds ahead of Hill and led seven laps. It marks the first win for a Ford truck ever at Atlanta and it was Enfinger’s first career victory at the track as well. With a victory in the Daytona season-opener it also marks the first multi-win season of his career.

“Unbelievable Ford F150 really on the short runs,’’ Enfinger said. “We didn’t have everything we needed to make a real run at those guys, Chase [Elliott] and Kyle [Busch] there for the long run, but I do think we were decent, but on the short run, I knew if it came right down to it and we could get a good restart we could make it happen. Fortunately we got a good restart.’’

Rookie Christian Eckes tied his career-best series effort finishing third. Todd Gilliland and rookie Zane Smith rounded out the top five. Ross Chastain, rookie Derek Kraus, former series champion Brett Moffitt, Ben Rhodes and Stewart Friesen rounded out the top 10.

As Enfinger celebrated his dramatic win in front of an empty grandstands, Hill climbed out of his No. 16 Hattori Racing Enterprises Toyota and leaned over the driver’s side window, resting his head on the roof obviously gutted by the outcome.

“I’m sure when I go back and watch the race I’m going to look at all the different things I could have done differently for that not to happen,’’ Hill said.

“I saw the 98 was getting a run on me down the backstretch but we had been so good on the bottom all day at the line that I didn’t really want to give that up and he was able to get to my quarter on entry to three. …Maybe I could have protected the outside line more or made my truck just a little bit wider but I just think when we go back to the drawing board, maybe I could have said something different to [crew chief] Scott [Zipadelli] and the guys to maybe have a little better truck on that short run.

“It was a good race, I wish it would have went green there at the end but it didn’t so we’ll have to take what we had and go on. All in all it was a good points day for us,’’ said Hill, who retains the championship lead by 20 points over Smith. The defending regular season champion Enfinger is now ranked fourth, 31 points behind Hill.

In a field featuring two vastly different levels of experience – the track’s all-time winningest driver Busch along with 14 other competitors making their debut on the Atlanta high banks – the veterans certainly demonstrated their expertise.

For much of the race, the more experienced drivers prevailed. Busch – a five-time winner at Atlanta in the truck series – and fellow NASCAR Cup Series driver Elliot dominated the top of the scoreboard in the early portion of the race – Busch winning both Stage 1 and Stage 2. Chastain, a truck series championship contender a year ago, put himself into the mix during long green flag run in the final stage – despite starting 27th in the field.

Among the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Series championship contenders, it was the kind of solid performance Enfinger and Hill needed, even racing against some of the NASCAR Cup Series’ finest.

Hill spent the early race holding his own among the front-runners, consistent and steady and when the opportunity to take the lead arose during green flag pit stops, Hill was there. With a little help from some uncharacteristic issues for Busch and Elliott.

Busch who had already established his truck the class of the field made what would likely have been his last pit stop with 35 laps to go. Immediately after returning to the track, however, his No. 51 Toyota hit the wall as he tried to avoid a damaged truck driven by Jordan Anderson. Unfortunately for Busch, he got a speeding penalty on his green flag pit stop and then another when he came in to repair that damage. It dropped him to 29th place with 25 laps to go – a full lap down. He ended up 22nd

Elliott, who tried to pit with Busch on that last set of green flag stops, was unable to get slowed enough to make pit road so had to turn back onto the track and cautiously make an extra lap with damaged tires before pitting on the next lap. He returned to the race back in the pack but had worked his way up to third place with 15 laps remaining ready to challenge Chastain and Hill before crashing with three laps to go. He finished 21st.

“They’re always tough to swallow when you know you know that you’re that good and end up second,’’ Hill said. “But that being my hometown, this is one of the race tracks I’ve wanted to win at since I was a little kid racing here when I was eight years old racing on the front stretch. It hurts and it’s really frustrating, but we’ll keep digging.

“We have that points lead and we’re hoping to keep it. I’m excited to go to Homestead [next weekend], maybe we can get a win there like we did last year and get locked into the playoffs.’’

  • Grant Enfinger wins in overtime thriller at Atlanta

Grant Enfinger wins in overtime thriller at Atlanta

In typical Atlanta Motor Speedway fashion, there was a last-lap dash and pass to the finish in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series Vet Tix Camping World 200 race. This time, however, it was between Grant Enfinger and Hattori Racing Enterprises’ Austin Hill.

Hill had led up until a late caution that flew with four laps to go when Chase Elliott spun off Turn 4. When the event went back green, Hill got a good jump on the restart, but it was eventually ThorSport Racing’s Enfinger who took home the win over Hill by 0.215 seconds.

“It was definitely wild, that’s for sure,” Enfinger said. “We didn’t lead too many laps, but we led the ones that counted. It was just a unbelievable, Farmpaint Ford F-150 on the short run. We didn’t have everything that we needed to make a real run at those guys, to keep up with Chase (Elliott) and Kyle (Busch) on the long run. We were decent on the long run, but we weren’t great. On the short run, I knew if it came down to it, we could make it happen if we had a good restart.”

“Fortunately, we got a good restart,” he continued. “Austin (Hill) blocked me on the backstretch and I felt like we could probably clear him either way but I was kind of glad he went to the bottom. I never used that move, but I (had) seen Kyle (Busch) and Johnny (Sauter) be successful with that same move. From there, it was just a matter of holding him (Hill) off and we had the speed to do that.”

Stages 30-30-70 made up the 130 lapper for the fourth race of the season with a competition caution on lap 15. Kyle Busch Motorsports driver, Christian Eckes, drew the pole earlier in the week while Tyler Ankrum of GMS Racing drew outside pole.

    Stage 1: Lap 1 – Lap 30

Eckes led early on but the race was slowed a couple of times by the No. 28 of Bryan Dauzat. Dauzat spun around twice, once on Lap 2, and a second time on Lap 12. Eventually, Dauzat would be out of the race, due to the damaged vehicle policy.

Before the competition yellow, KBM teammates, Eckes and Kyle Busch traded the lead. When the yellow flew, Johnny Sauter, Zane Smith, Brennan Poole, Stewart Friesen, and Ankrum were among the drivers to pit under yellow.

As the race went back green on Lap 16, Eckes got ahead for the lead but Busch took the top spot on Lap 24. KBM Team Owner Busch went on to win Stage 1 with Elliott, Eckes, Smith, Hill, Brett Moffitt, Sheldon Creed, Ross Chastain, Sauter, and Enfinger rounding out the top-10.

When the leaders pitted, there was a log jam on pit road and a collision. Ryan Truex, who was ahead of John Hunter Nemechek, checked up which caused Nemechek to run into the back of the No. 40 truck. Seasoned veteran, Matt Crafton also received front-end damage to his No. 88 machine after the incident and Nemechek had left-rear quarter panel damage to his Truck as well.

However, Sauter and Chastain were too fast on pit road and Angela Ruch was penalized for pitting outside the box. TJ Bell was also penalized for improper fueling. Zane Smith did not elect to pit, stayed out and was deemed the new leader for the Stage 2 restart.

    Stage 2: Lap 36 – Lap 60

After staying out hoping for track position, Smith fell back and was almost run over by drivers with fresher tires in the back.

Last week’s winner, Elliott, took the lead on Lap 38 and held it until Lap 51 when Busch once again made his way to the top of the leaderboard. The two traded positions before a caution halted the field when Austin Wayne Self in the No. 22 was stopped sideways off Turn 4. A few drivers, including Ruch, had to make some extra moves to avoid the sitting truck.

When the stage restarted with four to go, there wasn’t much of a challenge for Busch and he took the stage win. Enfinger, Kraus, Chastain, Gilliland, Eckes, Sauter, Raphael Lessard, Crafton, and Hill completed the top-10 finishers in the second stage.

    Stage 3: Lap 66 – Lap 136

The final stage saw the longest green-flag run of the day with 62 laps. Busch took the lead from Niece Motorsports’ Chastain with 44 to go and it looked as though he would set sail.

The final round of green-flag pit stops began with 35 to go with Chastain the first to start the sequence. Busch pitted from the lead one lap later. Meanwhile, Elliott had troubles slowing when he tried to pit and was forced to make an extra lap.

When Busch pitted, he was too fast on pit road and was given a penalty. As Busch re-entered the track, he nearly got into the No. 3 of Jordan Anderson in Turns 3 and 4. However, the No. 51 Cessna Tundra, was too fast again on pit road when Busch served the initial penalty. Receiving two penalties in a row would eventually end Busch’s chances of winning the race.

After that, Georgia native Hill was in prime position as he inherited the lead during the pit stop cycle. He appeared to be on his way to score the big victory until Elliott went spinning around in the No. 24 Hooters machine off Turn 4 with four to go, setting up an overtime restart.

There were some questions as to whether Hill would pit and everyone else would stay out or if Hill stayed out and everyone else would pit. However, all the lead lap trucks pitted under the final yellow.

Eventually, a two-lap dash to the finish ensued and anybody inside the top five had a chance to win. But when it came down to it, Enfinger and Hill were the two trying to get to the finish line first. Enfinger was on the outside while Hill was on the inside. Enfinger was able to get Hill loose just enough to take the lead and would score the first Atlanta victory of his career.

In 2020, Enfinger has earned two wins early in the season.

“Obviously, it started at Daytona,” he said. “Superspeedways can be so crazy and hit and miss. It’s something I like though. The fact we won at Daytona and I shouldn’t say this, but shouldn’t be the reason we won today. That, however, changes our mindset at the shop even before we get here. Like my spotter, Chris Lambert said, ‘we won this race at the shop.’ Some of those guys can’t even celebrate with me right now, so we won this for the shop. We might not have made the same move, had we not won (at Daytona) and we would be points racing. Thankfully, we get to take some of Marcus Lemonis’ (CEO of Gander RV and Camping World) money home to those who deserve it.”

Enfinger led twice for seven laps and now has four career victories. Not only did the Alabama native score his fourth career victory, he and the team picked up the $25,000 bonus from Marcus Lemonis.

There were six cautions for 28 laps and 14 lead changes among seven different drivers.

Note: Following the post-race inspection, Sauter’s 17th place finish was disqualified due to an unspecified tire modification. He was relegated to last place in the finishing order. This moves everyone who finished after him up one spot in the results.

  • David Ragan will return to Truck Series for one race at Richmond

David Ragan will return to Truck Series for one race at Richmond

Announced today via DGR-Crosley retired Cup Series star David Ragan will make his return to the NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series on Saturday, April 18 at Richmond International Raceway. Ragan is scheduled to drive the No. 17 Ford Performance F-150 Ford out of the DGR-Crosley stable. This will be the first time since 2006 that Ragan has competed in the Truck Series and will be the first time he’s competed in a Truck at Richmond.

“I’m really looking forward to racing one of DGR-Crosley’s F-150’s at Richmond,” said Ragan. “I’ve been friends with David [Gilliland] for a long time, and I see how much work he’s putting into this team and the success they’ve had early on. They have a shop full of great people and I’m glad that we could make all this happen.”

The last time Ragan raced in a Truck was 2006 at Phoenix, where the Georgia native finished 17th after starting 20th. Ragan notes that this is something he’s planned on ever since retiring from full-time competition last year in the Cup Series.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve raced in the Truck Series, and I’m incredibly thankful to Select Blinds for supporting me and allowing me to do this,” remarked Ragan. “This is what I wanted to do when I decided to stop racing full-time at the end of last season; I want to race in different series, with different teams. Obviously, we want to be competitive, and I have no doubt that DGR-Crosley will bring me a great truck. Richmond has always been one of my favorite tracks that we race at; hopefully, we can get the folks from Select Blinds another good finish this year and put on a good show for the fans.”

Ragan will carry sponsorship with Select Binds.
