Gilliland earns first Truck Series win at Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Todd Gilliland survived an unpredictable race filled with twists and turns to claim his first NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series victory in 46 starts. It is his sixth top five and 13th top-10 finish this season.

The Kyle Busch Motorsports driver led the last 11 laps of the NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 and held off a hard-charging Ross Chastain in an overtime drive to victory lane.

Gilliland described his emotions after the win.

“It feels amazing,” he said. “This place is really hard to win at. This Mobil 1 Toyota Tundra is not as pretty as we hoped it would be when we crossed the start-finish line, but man, it looks even better with water and Gatorade on it. Can’t thank JBL, Toyota, and all the fans enough. Thank you guys for sticking around. I think that was a good finish.”

He was also asked about a comment he made on the team radio concerning team owner Kyle Busch, saying Busch could “stay in his (expletive) motorhome.”

The remark was made in reference to remarks made by Busch earlier this year that indicated he was not pleased with Gilliland’s overall performance, telling him, “You have got to get up on top of the wheel and make it happen.”

Gilliland posted an apology to Busch on Twitter Saturday night.

“Like I’ve said before we should have won by now and it just hasn’t happened. I want to apologize to Kyle Busch for what I said after the race. My emotions got the best of me obviously and a lot went through my head as I took the checkered. Two more wins to chase.”

Ross Chastain finished second for his 17th top-10 of 2019 followed by Johnny Sauter in third, Grant Enfinger in fourth and Timmy Hill who rounded out the top five. It was Hill’s first top five in any of NASCAR’s top three series. Stewart Friesen, Jeb Burton, John Hunter Nemechek, Codie Rohrbaugh and Sheldon Creed placed sixth-10th, respectively.

While Gilliland celebrated, it was a tumultuous race for many of the competitors including most of the Playoff drivers. There were 12 cautions for a total of 80 laps.

Current points leader Brett Moffitt was involved in an accident on Lap 155 and his No. 24 GMS Racing Chevrolet was severely damaged. He was unable to finish the race and after completing only 122 laps, finished 29th. Moffitt currently has a 45-point margin over Matt Crafton who is fifth in the standings. Crafton had mechanical issues and finished a disappointing 23rd.

An accident on Lap 123 involved nine drivers including playoff drivers, Austin Hill (currently fourth) and Tyler Ankrum (sixth). Ankrum finished 25th followed by Hill in 26th.

The Truck Series heads to ISM Raceway for the Lucas Oil 150 on Nov. 8. The race will determine the four drivers who will contend for the series championship at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

GMS Racing Announces 2020 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Lineup

Brett Moffitt, Sheldon Creed and Sam Mayer Return for Second Consecutive

Statesville N.C. (October 26th, 2019) – GMS Racing officials announced today that Brett Moffitt and Sheldon Creed will compete full-time in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series for GMS Racing in 2020. 2019 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Champion Sam Mayer will return to the team with an expanded Gander Trucks schedule in 2020 as well as competing for ARCA Racing Series championships.

Moffitt, the 2018 Gander Trucks Champion is currently in his first full-time season with GMS Racing. Moffitt currently has four wins and three poles this season with 12 top-five’s, 15 top-10s and 369 laps led. He also leads the Gander Trucks playoffs standings with a 45-point cushion above the cut line. With eleven career Gander Trucks wins in his first 54 starts, Moffitt was the fourth quickest to reach eleven wins.

“I can’t thank Mike (Beam, team president) and Mr. Gallagher (team owner) enough for the opportunity to compete full-time with GMS Racing in 2020,” said Moffitt. “It’s been awesome to work with this organization this year and we’ve been competitive each and every week. We’ve earned four wins so far this season and held a steady lead throughout the playoffs. Having next year locked down allows us to focus completely on competing for a championship this year. Returning with the same teammates as well will be really cool. We already know how to work together and help each other while maintaining a bit of that competitive edge. I can only imagine what we will be able to accomplish in 2020 building off the momentum from this season.”

Creed, the only full-time Gander Trucks driver in the Drivers Edge Development program has scored two runner-up finishes so far this season and currently has four top-five’s, 10 top-10s and has led 164 laps. With a background in off-road racing, Creed was the youngest driver, at age 18, to compete in the world-famous Dakar Rally. He is currently the winningest driver in Stadium Super Trucks history, with 36 victories, two championships, and a gold medal in Stadium Super Trucks at X-Games Austin.

“I feel very confident going into next season with GMS Racing. I know I have the best group of people around me and the best organization to go out next year and compete for wins and hopefully the championship,” Creed stated. “I’m thankful to Mike (Beam, team president) and Maury (Gallagher, team owner) for the opportunity and continued support. The beginning of this season was a bit of a learning curve for me, but we found our groove and I’m excited to go out and compete for wins and build momentum for next year. It’ll be great to have my teammates back with me as well.”

Mayer won the 2019 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Championship for GMS Racing as a member of the inaugural Drivers Edge Development program. The Franklin, Wis., native will compete in six Gander Trucks races while competing for the ARCA Racing Series Showdown Championship and looks to defend his ARCA East Championship. Mayer holds the honor of being the youngest NASCAR champion in any national series, earning his title at 16 years, three months and eight days. Mayer earned four wins, three poles, 11 top-five’s, 11 top-10’s and led 497 laps in K&N East competition in 2019. He has earned seven top-five’s and led 26 laps in eight ARCA starts this year.

“I am excited to be returning to GMS Racing in 2020,” said Mayer. “We are being very aggressive with my schedule next year, and I think that will help challenge me and help me grow even more in my career. We are doubling the number of Gander Trucks races from what I am running in 2019 and once the ARCA series is finalized, I should be running more races than the entire truck schedule. I’ve been able to accomplish a lot this season with the support from GMS and I can’t wait for next season.”

“To have all three of these talented young men back with our organization is a blessing,” said Mike Beam, team president. “They have all brought a lot to the table for GMS in 2019. Mayer winning the K&N East Championship, Moffitt being in the hunt for GMS’ second Truck championship and Creed with multiple runner-up finishes, needless to say, that they have represented GMS well in 2019 and I have no doubt that success will continue in 2020.”

  • Moffitt and Creed back at GMS for 2020

Moffitt and Creed back at GMS for 2020

GMS Racing officials announced Friday afternoon that 2018 Truck Series Champion and current Playoff contender Brett Moffitt will return to the team for a second season to compete for the Truck Series title once again. Sheldon Creed will also be back in the No. 2 GMS Truck for a second season.

Moffitt has earned four wins, 12 top fives and 15 top-10 finishes and is currently looking for his second bid for the Championship 4 at Homestead-Miami Speedway next month.

After a rocky start to the 2019 season, Sheldon Creed has had some great runs as of late. Currently, the Alpine, California native has notched four top fives and 10 top-10 finishes along with three DNFs but he does have 164 laps led and a best finish of second twice, at Eldora and Michigan.

The beginning of this season was a bit of a learning curve for me but we found our groove and I’m excited to go out and compete for wins and build momentum for next year. It’ll be great to have my teammates back with me as well.”

Not to be overshadowed by the two returning drivers is NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Champion, Sam Mayer. Mayer, who has piloted the No. 21 GMS Chevy also returns but with more races scheduled compared to two races that he has done this year. The Franklin, Wisconsin native will now have six races on his schedule in 2020, but those have yet to be announced. Mayer will also compete for the ARCA Menards East championship.

“I am excited to be returning to GMS Racing in 2020,” said Mayer. “We are being very aggressive with my schedule next year and I think that will help challenge me and help me grow even more in my career. We are doubling the number of Gander Trucks races from what I am running in 2019 and once the ARCA series is finalized, I should be running more races than the entire truck schedule. I’ve been able to accomplish a lot this season with the support from GMS and I can’t wait for next season.”

GMS Racing Team President, Mike Beam, is excited about the 2020 season.

“To have all three of these talented young men back with our organization is a blessing,” said Mike Beam, team president. “They have all brought a lot to the table for GMS in 2019. Mayer winning the K&N East Championship, Moffitt being in the hunt for GMS’ second Truck championship and Creed with multiple runner-up finishes. Needless to say, that they have represented GMS well in 2019 and I have no doubt that success will continue in 2020.”

  • Tanner Gray to Make Truck Series Debut in Martinsville

Tanner Gray to Make Truck Series Debut in Martinsville

NHRA Champion Tanner Gray set to transition to Truck Series for the remainder of 2019 season

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 16, 2019) – DGR-Crosley announced today that Tanner Gray will make his NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series debut for the team driving the No. 15 Gray Motorsports/Valvoline Toyota Tundra at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on October 26. Gray will follow-up his debut by making starts at ISM Raceway in Phoenix, Ariz. and Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway to close out the 2019 season.

Gray, a 20-year-old NHRA Pro Stock Champion, made the transition to oval track racing in 2019, where he competed full time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series as well as picking up select ARCA Menards Series races. In his rookie K&N season, Gray closed out the year with a second-place finish at Dover (Del.) International Speedway, moving him up to third in the K&N Pro Series East Championship point standings. With combined results between his 15 K&N Pro Series East and West starts, Gray collected one win, nine top-five, and twelve top-10 finishes. He also collected three Pole awards throughout the season.

“I’m excited to make the step up to the Truck Series,” said Gray. “I think it’s going to be challenging, but I’m ready to take the next step with my DGR-Crosley guys. We’ve been preparing for this all season, and I think the best way to learn is to go out and do it. Between testing and spending time in the Toyota simulator, I think I have a good feel for Martinsville and will be able to adapt quickly. We will have three practice sessions to get acclimated and get the truck where it needs to be. We just need to keep our nose clean in the race and have a solid day on pit road.”

Gray’s K&N Pro Series team will make the transition to the Truck Series with him for the remainder of the season. Seth Smith will cover crew chief duties as veteran Cup Series spotter Eddie D’Hondt guides the young driver from the spotter stand.

“I’m really looking forward to Tanner’s Truck debut after the building season that he’s had,” said crew chief Seth Smith. “He’s learned a lot from where he started at the beginning of the season to where he’s at now. We tested at Martinsville and I feel like we had a really successful test session. I’m looking forward to racing there, as well as Phoenix and Homestead to finish out the year.”

Gray will take to Martinsville Speedway for the first time on Friday, October 25, for practice before the series qualifies and races on Saturday, October 26.

Jeb Burton to Return to Niece Motorsports at Martinsville Speedway

STATESVILLE, N.C. (October 15, 2019) – Jeb Burton will make his second start with Niece Motorsports in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, October 26.

“I’m excited to get back behind the wheel of one of these Niece Motorsports Chevrolets again,” said Burton.  “Martinsville is certainly a very special track to me, and a place that I have a lot of experience, so I’m confident that we can turn that into a strong result.”

Burton’s debut with Niece Motorsports came earlier this season at Kentucky Speedway, behind the wheel of the No. 44 Alsco/State Water Heaters Chevrolet Silverado.  In his 54th NGOTS start, Burton was able to earn his 20th top-10 in the series after starting 28th and finishing ninth.

The Virginia-native is no stranger to Martinsville; growing up racing late models at the ‘paper clip’.  In addition, Burton has four Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series starts, and seven NGOTS starts at Martinsville.

In his seven NGOTS starts at the half-mile track, Burton has earned one pole, which came in 2013.  At a track where passing is tough and track position is paramount, Burton has qualified in the top-10 on four occasions. His best finish at the track is two third-place results, both coming in 2013.

The No. 44 Chevrolet will carry the Alsco, State Water Heaters and Puryear Tank Lines colors at Martinsville.

Alsco was the first to offer linen and uniform rental services when founder, George A. Steiner, transformed a Lincoln, Nebraska, towel delivery route into a thriving commercial linen business, now headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Alsco has been an industry pioneer since 1889, blazing the trail for the laundering and delivery of ready-to-wear uniforms, starting with aprons and then moving on to every type of workwear application imaginable. Alsco also invented the continuous roll towel dispenser and pioneered the use of on-site garment lockers.

State Water Heaters, a brand of State Industries, Inc., is a leading manufacturer of commercial and residential water heaters. State offers over 500 water heater products and has consistently developed new technologies to ensure longer product life.

Based in Ashland City, Tennessee, State has seven water heater manufacturing plants. Hundreds of distribution centers across the United States ensure efficient service to State’s national customer base of residential homeowners, wholesalers, contractors, and other members of the engineering community.

All State products are backed by customer technical support and durable tank and parts warranty.

Puryear Tank Lines has supported Burton dating back to the start of his late-model racing.  Puryear Tank Lines is a third-generation, family-operated business, specializing in bulk tank delivery of LPG, butane, liquid asphalt, and bulk cement.

The NGOTS will visit Martinsville Speedway on Saturday, October 26 for the NASCAR Hall of Fame 200.  The race will take the green flag at 1:30 p.m. ET, and will air on FS1, MRN and SIRIUSXM NASCAR Radio.

NASCAR reinstates Tyler Dippel in Gander Outdoors Truck Series

    Staff Report | NASCAR.com

NASCAR reinstated Gander Outdoors Truck Series driver Tyler Dippel after an indefinite suspension on Aug. 23.

Dippel was originally suspended for violating the Member Conduct Guidelines, specifically Section 12.1 of the NASCAR Rule Book, a behavioral penalty for “actions detrimental to stock car racing.”

Dippel, 19, took to his Facebook page to explain the incident, citing he and a passenger had been pulled over for changing lanes without proper signal driving home from Orange County Fair Speedway on Aug. 18 in New York. Upon a requested search of Dippel’s truck by the trooper during the traffic stop, prescription medication was found in a friend’s backpack who was not present at the time.

According to Dippel, the trooper initially charged him with criminal possession of a controlled substance, but those charges were dropped in a Wallkill, New York, court on Wednesday morning after presented evidence proved his innocence.

The No. 02 Young’s Motorsports driver missed Sunday’s Gander Trucks race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. D.J. Kennington filled in and finished 15th.

Dippel is cleared to return when the Gander Trucks head to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the World of Westgate 200 on Friday, Sept. 13 (9 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM).

Read Dippel’s full statement via Facebook below:

I would like to start by apologizing to my fans, Young’s Motorsports, NASCAR, Gander Outdoors, our partners, and my family and friends for the grief this situation has caused. Due to an ongoing investigation we have not been able to speak on the topic until today.

On August 18, while driving home from the Orange County Fair Speedway, I was pulled-over for changing lanes without proper signal. The trooper asked my passenger and myself if we had been using drugs and we responded with “no” – because we hadn’t. The trooper continued to question us and then asked to search the vehicle, which I gave him my consent as I had nothing to hide. In the back of my truck was a friend’s backpack who was not with us containing his prescription medication. Because it was in my vehicle, I was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance. Upon my appearance ticket, I contacted NASCAR within hours to inform them of the situation. Due to the NASCAR rule book and code of conduct, they ruled to suspend me indefinitely. I respect their decision.

Early this morning, at the Town of Wallkill Court, the charges against me in this case were dismissed. We presented proof that the prescription was not mine and the person that the prescription belonged to accepted responsibility for leaving them in my vehicle.

I along with my team will work closely with NASCAR to hopefully be reinstated so I can be back in the Young’s Motorsports No. 02 Chevrolet. I take full responsibility for my actions.

Thank you again to everyone who has supported me. I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

    Sincerely,
    Tyler Dippel

Truck Series driver Tyler Dippel suspended indefinitely by NASCAR

A NASCAR spokesperson confirmed that the suspension is due to violating Section 12.1 of the NASCAR Rule Book for “actions detrimental to stock car racing.” No further details have been released.

Dippel was scheduled to compete in this weekend’s Truck Series race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in the No. 02 Chevrolet for Young’s Motorsports. The team has made no comment about the suspension and has not announced who will fill in for Dippel Sunday afternoon in the Chevrolet Silverado 250.

The 19-year-old is currently 13th in the series standings and has one top-five finish after finishing third at Michigan on August 10. He also has three top 10s this year but did not qualify for the Playoffs.

The NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Chevrolet Silverado 250 is scheduled for Sunday, August 25 at 2:30 p.m. ET on FS1.

Young’s Motorsports issued the following statement on their Twitter account Saturday morning.

“We understand NASCAR’s position regarding Young’s Motorsports driver Tyler Dippel and accept their decision. Our team was notified of the decision on Thursday, August 22. We respect the NASCAR policy as well as the process that NASCAR has gone through for this matter.

“Young’s Motorsports is disappointed with the situation and will evaluate its future course of action in regards to Dippel. We are finalizing our plans for the race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and will announce those details as soon as they are complete.”

They later announced that DJ Kennington would replace Dippel in the No. 02 entry for the race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

Update: On Wednesday, Aug. 28, NASCAR confirmed that Dippel had been reinstated.

Dippel issued a statement on his Facebook page explaining the incident in question.

“I would like to start by apologizing to my fans, Young’s Motorsports, NASCAR, Gander Outdoors, our partners, and my family and friends for the grief this situation has caused. Due to an ongoing investigation we have not been able to speak on the topic until today.

Dippel is scheduled to compete in the next Truck Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sept. 13.

  • Ankrum Locks Up Gander Outdoors Truck Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award at Michigan International Speedway

Ankrum Locks Up Gander Outdoors Truck Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award at Michigan International Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Aug. 11, 2019) – Tyler Ankrum locked up the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Sunoco Rookie of the Year award this weekend at Michigan International Speedway. The 18-year-old DGR-Crosley driver was the only rookie contender to make the 2019 Playoff field; therefore, he was able to clinch the award before seasons end.

Ankrum and his No. 17 Railblaza team earned a first-career Truck Series win earlier this season at Kentucky Speedway; a victory that ultimately solidified his spot in the Round of 8. NASCAR reset driver point standings to 2,000 for all Playoff drivers, a number of points that cannot be earned in the remaining seven races for other 2019 rookie contenders.

Ankrum is in his second season with DGR-Crosley. In 2018 he competed full-time in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. With four wins and nine top-five finishes, Ankrum won the 2018 K&N Pro Series East Championship as well as receiving Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors. The San Bernardino, Calif. native moved to the Truck Series this season after having a successful run in NASCAR’s regional series last year.

In 2019, Ankrum has one win, three top-five and six top-10 finishes in 11 races with DGR-Crosley. Ankrum was forced to miss the first three races of the season due to age restriction, which made making the 2019 Playoffs an even tougher feat for the team.

“It’s awesome getting the Rookie of the Year award in the fashion that we did,” said Ankrum. “We were basically out on points because of missing all those races at the beginning of the season. We won at Kentucky, and it changed the entire direction of our season. We knew that we had a team and equipment that could win this year and I’m so happy that we were able to do it before the Playoffs started. It’s a huge honor and one I’m proud to capture for DGR-Crosley. I’m focused on winning the Championship. That’s the next thing on the list us.”

The 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Playoffs will kick-off on Thursday, Aug. 15 at the 0.533-mile track of Bristol Motor Speedway.

ABOUT DGR-Crosley: DGR-Crosley is a race team owned by NASCAR veteran David Gilliland and Crosley Brands CEO, Bo LeMastus. The team specializes in driver development, competing full-time in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series, NASCAR K&N Pro Series and CARS Tour, as well running select ARCA Menards Series and late model races with factory support from Toyota. In its first year of operation, DGR-Crosley won 7 of 14 K&N East races, securing a Driver and Owner Championship. The team operates out of two buildings totaling 55,000 square feet in Mooresville, N.C.

  • Friesen survives, wins his first career race at Eldora

Friesen survives, wins his first career race at Eldora

It took 437 laps led and 63 starts but finally, Stewart Friesen is a winner in the Gander Outdoors Truck Series. Friesen had to hold off Sheldon Creed and company to win the Dirt Derby at Eldora Speedway.

“Thank you to all the race fans that stuck with us, that kept pulling for us,” Friesen said after he got out of his truck in Victory Lane. “Everybody that came to my hauler and thought that this is the week. Today, this is the day. This is part of it!”

“Just thanks to all these race fans. This was meant to be.”

Friesen was on the last spot in the Truck championship but with the win, he is locked into the field of eight for the Truck Series Playoffs that will start in Bristol.

Sheldon Creed came home with a career-best finish of second followed by Grant Enfinger and Mike Marlar, a dirt regular, who came home fourth. Kyle Bisch Motorsports driver Todd Gilliland came home in fifth.

Chase Briscoe and Matt Crafton started on the front row and they are no strangers to being up front on the dirt. Briscoe won this race last year with Crafton winning the year before. Briscoe led from wire to wire even though the stage was slowed by two quick cautions. Landon Huffman who is subbing for Spencer Boyd spun it around. Then Jake Griffin spun it around as well right after the green flag waved from the Huffman spin. When it was all said and done it was Briscoe winning the stage followed by Gilliland, Brett Moffitt, Creed and Crafton to round out the top five.

    Stage 2:

Most of the leaders decided to stay out after the stage break with the exception of Gilliland and Moffitt while Briscoe continued to dominate as he did in the first stage. Also like the first stage, some yellows disrupted the flow of the action. Harrison Burton spun his truck around on Lap 57 and the dirt version of “The Big One” happened on Lap 65 which involved Austin Hill, Burton, Christian Eckes, Carson Hocevar, Colt Gilliam and more. Many were able to continue but for Hill and Gilliam, their nights were over.

The action and the yellows did not stop though as the No. 34 of Mason Massey spun it around on Lap 76 when he got a cut tire. Creed spun it after they went back to green after the Massey spin but there was no yellow waved.

Like the first stage though it was all Briscoe as he went wire to wire to win the stage.

    Final Stage:

Friesen stayed out while Briscoe and Crafton, among others, went in to pit after the stage ended. With going in to pit Briscoe restarted 12th while Friesen led the field to green to start the final stage. Friesen started to pull away but it was all for nothing due to the No. 45 of Chastain spinning right in front of the field. But somehow, someway, all of the field escaped without hitting Chastain’s truck.

There were a few more incidents after this one including a yellow that featured three wrecks in one. First, the No. 54 of Kyle Strickler spun trying to navigate the high side and before that the No. 32 of Devin Dodson and the No. 10 of Jennifer Jo Cobb. Last but not least Johnny Sauter and Briscoe got connected after the Strickler spin. Norm Benning spun with 31 laps to go after they went back to green following the multiple trucks that spun in the previous caution. The fun didn’t stop there as Dodson spun it around again with 17 laps to go.

Briscoe was a man on a mission but he tried a little bit too hard and spun out with nine laps to go while battling Creed for fifth. Briscoe went on to finish seventh.

There is only one race left to make the field of eight for the Gander Outdoors Truck Series Championship and that will be determined by the race in Michigan, a week from Saturday (August 3), on FS1.
