Ross Chastain Earns Third Truck Series Win of the Season

LONG POND, Pa. (July 27, 2019) – Ross Chastain and Niece Motorsports earned their third win of the season in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) on Saturday afternoon at Pocono Raceway.  Chastain led 54 of 60 laps in a dominating performance in the No. 45 Baja/Acurlite Chevrolet Silverado.

The win is Chastain’s third overall this season in the NGOTS, and the second win counting towards his bid to make the playoffs.

“We stomped them in the dirt,” said Chastain of the dominating performance.  “We pressed the attack.  I’m so dang excited.”

Chastain started second and took the lead on Lap 1, leading the opening 26 laps before visiting pit road under green for a scheduled pit stop.  Six laps later, Chastain made his way to the front of the pack again, leading all the remaining laps.

“I can’t say enough how proud I am of everyone at this organization,” said team owner Al Niece.  “We might not have as many employees as some of these other teams, or as big of a budget, but we do have a lot of heart in the shop and behind the steering wheel.”

On June 4, when Chastain opted to switch his points declaration from the NASCAR XFINITY Series to the NGOTS, the 26-year-old watermelon famer from Alva, Florida needed to win at least one race, while also making the top-20 in the driver point standings.

He now has two victories that count towards his playoff bid and sits 18th in the driver point standings.

While the organization searches for a fulltime primary sponsor to join its championship bid, companies Baja and Acurlite joined the team the week of the race – as fans offering support to Chastain and the No. 45 team.

Next week, Chastain takes on a new challenge, visiting Eldora Speedway for the first time.

“Buck Stevens let me go out in his dirt modified this week and get some laps,” said Chastain.  “We’ll go try and press the attack.  We’re not going to back down.  I always thought dirt was for farming, and asphalt is for racing.  But we’re going to learn something new next week.”

The NGOTS will take the green flag for the Eldora Dirt Derby on Thursday, August 1 at 9 p.m. ET on FS1.

Ross Chastain puts on clinic at Pocono, takes home popular win

With fuel no longer a concern when it came to crunch time, fan-favorite Ross Chastain was able to take home his third checkered flag of the 2019 season and becomes more of a threat for the championship.

“This thing was “Haulin Ballz” all day. Nick Harrison, I miss that guy,” Chastain said in his post-race interview. “These guys brought a flawless truck. The only time we didn’t lead laps was when we pitted to keep our track position. Flawless day, flawless weekend. These guys set up the fastest truck, they get to drive home because we’re not on the budget today. We came and we won, so it’s a dream come true.”

Austin Hill won the pole during qualifying Friday afternoon with Ross Chastain on the outside pole.

    Stage 1 Lap 1- Lap 15

The Gander RV 150 got off to an eventful start on the first lap, as Stewart Friesen’s truck snapped loose, wrecking and hit the Turn 1 wall. Friesen would wind up in last place.

Friesen commented added, “Not really sure (regarding the incident), spun around and made contact with the wall. We had a lot of family out here today and we are really disappointed. I’m usually optimistic, but not really sure right now.”

Just as soon as the race restarted on Lap 5, another caution flag flew for the No. 28 of Bryan Dauzat who spun in Turn 1. Bayley Currey also spun around after the Lap 8 restart but no caution was flown as the race remained green. Johnny Sauter would have to make a pit stop due to contact with Currey after the restart.

These were the only three incidents that took place in the first stage. Stage 1 eventually saw Florida native Ross Chastain take the stage win.

    Stage 2 Lap 19- Lap 30

With some pit strategy, Harrison Burton stayed out along with Chastain, Sheldon Creed, Brett Moffitt, Christian Eckes and Todd Gilliland.

The second stage was not as eventful as Stage 1 but still had some notable incidents. Right after the green flag dropped for Stage 2, Creed hit the wall on the backstretch after slight contact with Eckes and Creed had to make a pit stop for right front damage.

Pole sitter Austin Hill also had his own issues, as clutch problems would eventually take him out of the race on Lap 22. More strategy broke out just a few laps later, that saw Chastain pitting from the lead along with Eckes and Tyler Ankrum.

By staying out, Burton collected a much-needed Stage win in hopes of making it into the playoffs, earning 10 playoff points.

    Stage 3 Lap 34- Lap 60

Chastain was able to recycle as the race leader when the race went back green, as other drivers pitted under the Stage break. From that point on, even with saving a little bit of fuel in case of a green-white-checkered overtime, the Niece Motorsports driver had enough in the tank to take home his third checkered flag of the season, his first since Gateway.

“It all starts with the top of our team,” Chastain added in his post-race interview with MRN Radio describing the victory. “Al Niece (Team Owner), his motto is “Press The Attack”, he is a marine vet. He has done more in his life than I ever could imagine. This whole country could never thank a guy like him enough. But that’s what he instills in us. After everything happened in Iowa, we came back mad and won again. We were mad this week, losing Nick Harrison. Honestly, it’s not fair. Everyone goes to the lord when it’s their time.”

“But man it feels good (to win), yes it’s hard. I’ve had dominant trucks and not won, so to put it all together, it’s so tough. I’m just living my dream.”

With this win, Chastain earned the third victory of his Truck Series career. Chastain led twice for 54 laps and earned six playoff points.

Stankiewicz and Creed have history as the duo captured the 2018 ARCA Racing Series championship together.

Last season Creed won four races and earned 11 top-five, 12 top-10 finishes and three poles with Stankiewicz atop the pit box en route to the 2018 ARCA championship. Stankiewicz was previously with GMS Racing from 2015 – 2017.

“I’m super excited to work with Jeff again,” Creed said. “We had a lot of success last year and always seemed to be on the same page. We got along great and I’m pumped to see what we can do the rest of the season together.”

“I’m happy to be back at GMS and back with Sheldon,” Stankiewicz said. “We won quite a few races and a championship together last year, so I’m hoping we can pick up right where we left off. We’ve got three more chances to get a win to put Sheldon into the Playoffs, and from there we’ll keep building on what we’ve got.”

  • Ankrum, DGR-Crosley Score First Truck Series Victory at Kentucky Speedway

Ankrum, DGR-Crosley Score First Truck Series Victory at Kentucky Speedway

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (July 12, 2019) – Tyler Ankrum earned a first-career NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series victory when he took the checkered flag in Thursday’s Buckle Up in Your Truck 225 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky. The 18-year-old San Bernardino, Calif. native’s win also marked DGR-Crosley’s first victory in the series.

Ankrum made the move to the Truck Series this season after earning a NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Championship title in 2018 with DGR-Crosley. Due to his age, he was forced to miss the first three races of the Truck Series schedule in 2019. Therefore, Ankrum was in a need-to-win situation to make the post-season Truck Series playoffs.

“I can’t thank everyone at DGR-Crosley enough: David [Gilliland], Bo [LeMastus], Bono [Kevin Manion] and everyone else for believing in me. They work so hard day in and day out. I cannot believe that we just did this; it’s incredible. This is a dream come true. I’ve always doubted myself, and I think tonight is going to wash all that away. I have a great group of partners this year that have gotten me this far, without them none of this would even be possible: Toyota, Railblaza, Academy Sports, Modern Meat. This is incredible. It’s going to take a lot more work to chase a Championship, but we are one step closer.”

Ankrum had a strong showing all night at the 1.5-mile track in Kentucky. He was scored fourth at the conclusion of both Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the 150 lap competition. He led for 40 laps in Stage 3 before giving up the lead on pit road. While many chose to short pit, Ankrum’s Crew Chief, Kevin “Bono” Manion gave up the lead in order to get more fuel in the No. 17 Academy Sports/Railblaza Toyota Tundra on the last pit stop of the race. The strategy played out in Ankrum’s favor when the No. 24 ran out of fuel with only a few laps remaining. Ankrum went on to secure a first-career NASCAR National Series win.

“I was so worried because I couldn’t see the 24 truck ahead of me,” said Ankrum. “They kept telling me they needed me to get all I could out of it and that’s what I was focused on. I think I forgot to breathe the last three laps. I’m so thankful for what we’ve done here. This is a total team effort.”

While the night was special for Ankrum, it was also one for the history books for DGR-Crosley and team owners David Gilliland and Bo LeMastus. In just the second year of operation, the newly formed driver development organization was able to pick up their first Truck Series win, giving them a win in every series that they compete in across late models, K&N Pro Series, ARCA and the Truck Series.

“This win is super special,” said team co-owner Gilliland. “We couldn’t do it without the help of Bo [LeMastus], Toyota and all of our partners who have supported us since day one. We have a great group of people who left other opportunities to take a chance on our team. We are working so hard on developing something special and different at DGR-Crosley.”

“I’m so proud of Tyler,” Gilliland remarked. “I’ve been watching him race since he was 11 or 12 years old. To see these kids grow up and watch them move up and succeed within our organization is really special and something that we are really proud of. I’m so proud of every single person that we have at DGR-Crosley. This is awesome.”

While Ankrum collected the win, his teammate Dylan Lupton also earned a career-high finish as he and the No. 15 Toyota Tundra team scored a fifth-place finish in the Buckle Up in Your Truck 225.

The Truck Series will have a week off before heading to Pocono Raceway on July 27.

  • Ross Chastain Finds Victory Lane at Gateway

Ross Chastain Finds Victory Lane at Gateway

MADISON, Ill. (June 23, 2019) – For the third time this season Ross Chastain visited Victory Lane with Niece Motorsports in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS).  This time, the win at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway counted towards Chastain’s bid to make the playoffs.

“This win means the world,” said Chastain.  “This team had a chip on their shoulder after last week.  We knew we needed to come here and win, and we were able to do that.  We didn’t have the fastest truck, but man we wanted it.  I’m so grateful to CarShield for coming on board this week; it feels great to bring them to victory lane.  A big thank you to our boss man Al Niece for allowing us the opportunity to do what we love.”

With clean air proving to be of utmost importance, Chastain and crew chief Phil Gould took a gamble late in the race, opting for a fuel-only pit stop.  The bold strategy call proved successful, ultimately moving Chastain to the lead as green flag pit stops cycled through.

The watermelon farmer from Alva, Florida was able to hold on to the lead, even through a late race restart with seven laps remaining.  The trucks behind Chastain had fresher tires, but the 26-year-old would not be denied.

“I’m so proud of this team,” said team owner Al Niece.  “Instead of letting what happened last week tear them apart, it only made them stronger and more determined to win.  Ross is a tremendous talent – this team has proven what they are capable of.”

Chastain’s push to make the playoffs to contend for the championship became a lot easier after Saturday night’s victory.  Coming into last night’s race, Chastain had six races to earn a win and move into the top-20 in NGOTS points to be eligible to compete for the championship.  After the victory, Chastain is 26th in points, just 38 points outside of the top-20.

The win comes on the heels of a tough week for the organization.  Chastain and team found Victory Lane last week at Iowa Speedway, only to have the win taken away following post-race inspection.

The team’s luck began to turn around when CarShield opted to hop on board and sponsor the No. 45 Chevrolet.

Headquartered close to Worldwide Technology Raceway at Gateway, in nearby Saint Peters, Mo., CarShield offers vehicle service contracts designed to pick up where automobile owners’ existing warranty drops off and to fill gaps in coverage. CarShield was founded in 2005 by principals Nick Hamilton, Mark Travis, and Rick Brettelle and specializes in shielding its members from the high cost of automobile repairs by offering a wide range of flexible vehicle service plans.

Chastain’s victory in the CarShield 200 presented by CK Power, is officially the team’s second win of the season.  Last month, Chastain and team visited Victory Lane at Kansas Speedway.

The NGOTS will return to action in the Camping World 225 on Friday, June 28 at Chicagoland Speedway.

  • Ross Chastain And Niece Motorsports Lose Appeal

Ross Chastain And Niece Motorsports Lose Appeal

On Sunday what would have appeared to be a big win for Chastain and the No. 44 Niece Motorsports team, who won every stage and led a dominating 141 of the scheduled 200 laps, Chastain’s truck was found too low following post-race inspection, thus his win was taken away along with the $50,000 courtesy of The Triple Truck Challenge.

After the decision was made by NASCAR officials, Chastain and his team had until noon eastern to appeal the penalty. Thus, Niece Motorsports chose to appeal the penalty.

Al Niece stated this on Sunday following the post race failure inspection.

“Our Niece Motorsports team works hard to ensure that our race trucks are within the confines of NASCAR’s rules,” Niece said. “Both of our Chevrolets passed opening and pre-race inspections. We believe that the No. 44 Truck sustained minor damage during the event, which left the truck too low following the race. We will appeal NASCAR’s decision. Regardless of the outcome, this team will be prepared to go to Gateway and win again.”

With that said, the penalty appeal hearing was held on Wednesday morning and a decision was made early afternoon. Despite all efforts by Chastain and Al Niece, they lost the appeal, therefore will not be able to get the win back and will receive a last-place finish along with five points.

“Although our team disagrees with the decision, we have exhausted our options for recourse and must move on,” Al Niece (Team Owner) added following the appeal hearing. “Our sights will remain set on the obstacle in front of us which is making the playoffs. I firmly believe that Ross and this Niece Motorsports team are capable of rising to the challenge, no matter what gets in our way.”

Cody Efaw, General Manager of Niece Motorsports also added to the statement.

“I’m proud to work with every single member of this Niece Motorsports team,” Efaw said. “This team is all heart- we aren’t going to let anyone or anything get in our way. We have one goal. We’re incredibly thankful to our owner who continues to believe in us and invest in this team. We are looking forward to Gateway.”

Chastain also chimed in on the statement and gave his side.

“It’s actually very simple- Sunday is in the past,” Chastain added. “I’m focused on getting to Gateway and putting this Niece Motorsports Truck in Victory Lane for the third time this year.”

Up until the post race failure at Iowa this past Sunday, Chastain and his No. 44 Niece Motorsports team had finished inside the top-10 in every race dating back to the season opener at Daytona.

  • Johnny Sauter suspended for one race after incident at Iowa

Johnny Sauter suspended for one race after incident at Iowa

NASCAR officials announced Tuesday that Johnny Sauter has been suspended for one race due to his actions at Iowa Speedway under caution and cannot compete in this weekend’s upcoming Truck Series race at Gateway.

On Lap 137 during Sunday’s M&M’s 200 at Iowa Speedway, Sauter was wrecked off Turn 4. Replays showed that it was Austin Hill who wrecked Sauter after they had been battling hard with each other laps prior, which led up to the incident.

After Sauter was wrecked, he chased after Hill and intentionally wrecked him, sending Hill up the track. After Sauter’s actions, he was parked for the rest of the day by NASCAR and finished 27th, while Hill wound up in the 12th position. Apparently, this incident started at the previous race Texas Motor Speedway, a week before.

However, despite the news, Sauter will still remain playoff eligible from his win at Dover and currently sits eighth in the points standings, the last spot to be qualified for the playoffs.

Sauter spoke with Fox Sports 1 reporter Alan Cavanna after the race in a short interview and gave his side of the story.

“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out, you know?,” Sauter said to Alan Cavanna in his interview. “You know, sometimes you have contact and it’s racing.”

Sauter was also asked if he had spoken to Hill.

“No, what’s there to say?” Sauter added. “I’d love too, yeah it would be great, but it’s going to be hard to get to him.”

Hill also commented about the incident. .

“It’s hard racing with that (Johnny Sauter) guy,” Hill said to Alan Cavanna. “We were racing hard, getting in to Turn 1, he got in to me a little bit, I kind of returned the favor. I don’t race like that, so if you’re going to race me like that and take me out, I guess he was mad from Texas last week, I don’t know. I’m not going to put up with it, I mean you seen that today (Sunday). I try to race everyone clean, but when they race you like that, I don’t put up with it.”

When the suspension news was announced Tuesday afternoon, NASCAR senior vice president of competition Scott Miller explained NASCAR’s decision.

“We look back at the history of everything we’ve done and try to react with the precedents that we’ve set and then obviously tailoring those to the situation that we have at hand,” said Scott Miller, NASCAR senior vice president of competition. “In this case, we felt like his actions certainly warranted being sat down for an event, but it felt a little too harsh to take him straight out of the championship, so we think we landed on what we feel is fair and a deterrent.”

“We tend to look at incidents under caution as more of a retaliatory thing,” Miller said. “Obviously, him driving half a track with a smoking truck and winding through a few cars to get to the 16 and then running over him, then bouncing off the wall and running into his door, it was pretty aggressive. It was definitely not anything that could in any way, shape or form be defended as a racing incident.”

While Sauter will sit out this weekend, NASCAR said there will be more discussions with Hill and NASCAR will continue to monitor the two drivers for the rest of the season.

“We did talk about that,” Miller said, “and while we haven’t typically reacted in the form of a penalty to those things, there will certainly be further discussions with the driver of the 16 and he will definitely be placed under a little bit more of a microscope as far as us watching his actions on the race track.”

“Those conversations will take place again before they are placed on the race track again together,” Miller said, “and there will be a pretty good understanding that we don’t want to see any more contact or aggressive behavior out of either one of them  — toward each other or other competitors.”

This is the first time a Truck Series driver has been suspended from competition since 2011.

  • All Out Motorsports team shut down

All Out Motorsports team shut down

Announced earlier this morning by team crew chief, Wally Rogers, All Out Motorsports, a NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series team was shut down Tuesday. The team had driver and team owner, Korbin Forrister, behind the wheel.

All Out entered their first event in the Truck Series in 2018 and was considered a part-time team. Their history included a span of over two years with 16 starts and they had their best finish of 13th at Kentucky last July with Forister behind the wheel. The team never recorded a top five or top-10 finish in the series but did manage to lead four laps.

The last start came at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where they started 27th and finished 25th. The team originally was supposed to do the Kansas race in May but withdrew.

Wally Rogers made the following statement on his Twitter account Tuesday morning, but the team has not made an official announcement.

So they shut our truck deal down. I’m officially a free agent. So if someone is looking for a person that can build one from the ground up, take it to the track and call the races hit me up. I’m available.— Wally Rogers (@walr2772) June 18, 2019

  • Moffitt Wins at Iowa after Chastain fails post-race inspection

Moffitt Wins at Iowa after Chastain fails post-race inspection

When racing fans watched the 11th Annual M&M’S® 200 presented by Casey’s General Store live, they saw Florida native Ross Chastain take the checkered flag at Iowa Speedway for his second win of the season. However, about an hour after the race concluded, NASCAR officials made the announcement that race winner Chastain failed post-race inspection after finding the ride heights being too low.

With that said, Grimes, Iowa native Brett Moffitt was declared the winner instead after previously finishing second when Chastain crossed the line first originally.

“I’ll take a win anyway I can get,” Moffit said in his post race press conference. “I would rather take the checkered flag first and inspection penalties like this, are good for the integrity of the sport.”

This is Moffitt’s eighth victory in 46 Gander Outdoors Truck Series and his first victory and sixth top-10 finish in 2019.

Moffitt started his day in the sixth position after qualifying was rained out. He was quiet for most of the day, but shined in the final stage where he followed Chastain closely behind in second. When the original race was over, Moffitt crossed the second but later declared the winner after inspection.

Even if Moffitt was declared the winner, he described track position was important when he originally finished second.

“Track position, really,” the Grimes, Iowa native told in his post race interview with MRN Radio. “Really tough to pass and we kept getting stuck on the bottom on restarts, and tough to get your momentum going down there. All in all, we had a good day but it’s my home track and wins are all that matters here. We had a good Chevy Silverado, just needed a little more.”

It is Moffitt’s first win of the 2019 season, his first since winning the championship last season at Homestead. Moffitt is awarded ten points and a spot in the playoffs should he stay in the top eight.

The Niece Motorsports team, however, are allowed until noon eastern Monday to appeal the decision.

Chastain, on the other hand, was relegated to a 32nd place finish and his two stage wins were taken away. He will only earn five points for the race.

Johnny Sauter was parked by NASCAR after an incident with Austin Hill and is credited with only completing 137 laps. He wound up finishing 28th. The altercation began when Hill got into the back of Sauter’s truck on Lap 137. Sauter slid into the outside wall and during the caution, he ran into the rear of Hill’s truck in retaliation.

Update: It is determined that Niece Motorsports will appeal NASCAR’s decision. Niece Motorsports originally had until noon eastern on Monday to appeal the penalty.

Stay tuned with Speedway Media throughout the week following Niece’s appeal.
