Race Rundown – No. 44 VFW Chevrolet Silverado

Wright and the No. 44 team made up critical track position at the halfway point of Stage One when the team elected not to pit under caution on lap 22, positioning them in sixth-place on the restart. Wright battled to hold track position the rest of the way in the stage on old tires, resulting in a 26th-place finish.

After running to a 25th-place finish in Stage Two, Wright restarted 21st for the final stage and was narrowly collected in a multi-truck incident in turn four on lap 98, causing right side damage. The No. 44 team worked to make repairs but was forced to take its Chevrolet Silverado behind the wall under NASCAR’s damaged vehicle policy, resulting in a 32nd-place finish.

Alan and the No. 45 team faced early adversity Friday night when he was sent for a spin in turn three on lap 20 to bring out the caution. Alan rebounded to secure a 24th-place finish in Stage One.

On lap 72 with the end of Stage Two looming, Alan had a right front tire go down and was forced to put under green for four tires. Fortunately, the caution flag waved two laps later and Alan was awarded the free pass to get back on the lead lap before crossing the line 23rd in Stage Two. Race Rundown – No. 40 Worldwide Express Chevrolet Silverado

Thompson and the No. 40 team’s strategy of staying out while the leaders pitted during the second caution of the night positioned them in ninth-place at the halfway point in Stage One before holding on for a 21st-place finish in the stage on old tires. Thompson continued to battle in the middle of the field in the second stage, crossing the line 26th.

The No. 40 team continued to make adjustments throughout the night and steadily made its way up the leaderboard over the course of several restarts, culminating in a 14th-place finish and his third Sunoco Rookie of the Race honor this season.

Thompson on his top-15 effort at Darlington: “Our No. 40 Worldwide Express Chevrolet team put together a strong run to finish 15th and earn another Sunoco Rookie of the Race honor. We brought a solid Chevrolet Silverado to the track today and it showed – our strategy paid off and we’re pointed in the right direction.”

Race Rundown – No. 41 Worldwide Express Chevrolet Silverado

Chastain and the No. 41 Worldwide Express Chevrolet came to life following the team’s first pit stop of the night on lap 20, driving up through the field in the final laps of Stage One to cross the line second. After winning the race off pit road during the stage break, Chastain took control of the race and was out front for a majority of Stage Two before giving way to teammate Carson Hocevar and settling for another second-place showing in the stage.

The No. 41 team won the race off pit road yet again before the start of the final stage before Chastain and John Hunter Nemechek began to battle for the lead following the ensuing restart. After surrendering the lead, Chastain was shuffled back to fifth when two trucks got together and forced the two-time Cup Series winner to check up and lose ground on the leaders. On the final restart – starting in third – Chastain suffered from a transmission failure heading into turn one, ultimately ending his night and resulting in a 25th-place finish.

Chastain led four times for 46 laps on the night – second to race winner Nemechek’s total of 69.

Chastain on his strong run at Darlington: “We had a fast Worldwide Express Chevrolet Silverado tonight. We led laps and were in position to race for a win but, unfortunately, the transmission got stuck in second gear on the final restart. We’re bummed with the end result, but I’m proud of the effort from Niece Motorsports and happy for Carson Hocevar and the No. 42 team. Their day is coming.”

Race Rundown – No. 42 Premier Security Solutions Chevrolet Silverado

Hocevar quickly made his way into the top-five Friday night and was a mainstay at the front of the field. Following a four tire stop under caution on lap 20, he made his way back into the top-10 and ultimately crossed the line third at the end of Stage One. The No. 42 team put together one of its best stops of the night during the stage break to position Hocevar on the front row to begin Stage Two and ran behind race leader Ross Chastain for much of the stage. After another four tire stop under caution on lap 76, Hocevar made the pass on Chastain with three to go in Stage Two and went on to claim his first career stage win.

After making adjustments to remedy a loose handling condition under caution on lap 116, Hocevar made his way back up to second-place in the final laps of the race but was unable to chase down race winner John Hunter Nemechek as an electrical issue plagued the No. 42 on the final lap.

Hocevar led twice for nine laps en route to his second-consecutive runner-up finish this season.

Hocevar on turning in another second-place finish: “There’s no question these Niece Motorsports Chevrolet Silverados are really good. [Crew chief] Phil Gould’s hard work week-in and week-out – along with all of the support from [general manager] Cody Efaw and [team owner] Al Niece – is making this organization the best its ever been. To have a truck running up front that’s not [driven by] Ross Chastain and winning stages is really good. We just needed a little bit more. The No. 4 truck was really good. I was hoping I could have gotten to [John Hunter Nemechek] – I would’ve done a lot – because I was better than [Nemechek] in turns one and two but he was better than me in three and four. We were close again, but hopefully we’re one spot better next week.”

Quote: “Great job by everybody on my Champion Power Equipment team tonight. This race was by far our best one that we’ve had as a group, and we have made some really solid gains. I feel that more importantly, we have a solid direction to head moving forward. Nights like these make me feel really good about the work that we all have been putting in, and I’m really looking forward to getting to a more traditional intermediate track like Kansas next week to see how our package continues to perform.”

Quote: “Man, what a hard-fought race tonight at Darlington. Our No. 24 Chevy had some speed in it, but unfortunately we had to overcome some major front end damage early on. Darlington is such a tough track, and losing that downforce really hurt our chances at having a better night. Thankfully, we were able to fight through the field and avoid most of the carnage to salvage a decent finish. I’m proud of my team for working as hard as they did to repair our truck and look forward to some of these upcoming tracks.”

DGR NCWTS Race Recap: Darlington Raceway

    Friday, May 6
    Track: Darlington Raceway, 1.36-mile oval
    Race: 7 of 23
Event: Dead On Tools 200 (147 laps, 200 miles)

Hailie Deegan, No. 1 Wastequip Ford F-150

    Start: 26th
    Finish: 29th

    • Hailie Deegan took the green flag for the Dead On Tools 200 after qualifying 26th at the infamous Lady in Black. Despite being loose early in the run, she netted six additional places, crossing the line at the end of Stage 1 in 20th position.
    • Deegan noted on the radio that she fought the rear end coming around throughout the run, finding it especially difficult to get the nose turned in the bottom lane. Despite these issues, the Temecula, CA native found speed running the top, reaching as high as 16th in Stage 2.
    • The 20-year-old’s momentum was ultimately halted after becoming trapped behind a wounded truck, limping its way onto pit road following a blown tire. Deegan would fall to the 25th position, losing valuable track position despite a strong Ford F-150.
    • Before the ensuing restart, the No.1 crew made a slight left rear adjustment, climbing back into 20th as the race would enter its final 57 laps. The following restart proved to be disastrous as Deegan was collected in a wreck that critically damaged her left front fender. She rejoined the field for 30 more laps before being forced to retire early with recurring tire failures generated by the damage sustained in the incident.
    • When the checkered flag fell on the Dead On Tools 200, Deegan was scored in the 29th position.

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Dead On Tools Ford F-150

    Start: 17th
    Finish: 34th

    • Tanner Gray qualified 17th for the Dead On Tools 200. Struggling with a loose handling truck, Gray was running 14th after the opening 20 laps.
    • The caution on lap 21 allowed the team to pit for fresh tires and trackbar adjustments. The No. 15 F-150 restarted 19th and cracked into the top-10 on lap 30. Gray ultimately finished seventh in Stage 1 to earn four stage points.
    • Still struggling with a loose truck, Jerry Baxter made the call for fresh tires and the addition of a spring rubber to the left rear during the stage break.
    • Gray restarted 11th and sustained fender damage in the opening few laps that forced the team to fix it under the lap 59 caution. The Ford driver would go on to finish 15th in Stage 2.
    • The Dead On Tools truck fired off 16th for the final stage and was working its way forward when disaster struck on lap 99 and Gray was involved in a multi-truck incident in turn 3 effectively ending his night early. He was credited with 34th position.

Ryan Preece, No. 17 United Rentals Ford F-150

    Start: 13th
    Finish: 7th

    • Ryan Preece rolled off 13th for the 200-mile event. At the drop of the green flag, he quickly moved up to eighth.
    • The veteran driver pitted at the lap 20 caution and restarted 17th. He advanced back up to ninth with 17 laps to go in the stage, but as the truck began to build loose he faded back to 17th at the end of Stage 1.
    • Preece started Stage 2 from 15th and was running 12th when caution flag waved on lap 59. On the restart, he advanced up to seventh and maintained inside the top-10 as he held on for eighth-place at the end of Stage 2.
    • The Connecticut native occupied the eighth position for much of the final stage. When the final caution flag of the race waved with four laps remaining, he was in ninth. He gained two positions in the closing laps and secured his fifth career top-10 in five career NCWTS starts with a seventh-place finish.

Next event: Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas on May 14 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

    TOYOTA QUOTES

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK, No. 4 Mobil 1 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 1st

How does it feel to get your first win of the season and first at Darlington Raceway?

“Huge shout out to all the guys that work on this No. 4 KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) Mobil 1 Toyota Tundra TRD PRO, just Mobil 1 and everyone that puts their heart and soul into what’s going on — this is huge. Just thank you to everyone. Thank you to the fans. This place is packed. Awesome crowd. I thought we gave it away early honestly and we’re able to rebound and battle back so it’s cool. Aspen (daughter) I think is sleeping so hopefully Taylor (wife) gets her up and brings her to victory lane so we can celebrate. Learned a lot tonight and was finally able to bring home the first one of the year. I’m just thankful for the opportunity I have from Kyle (Busch, team owner), Toyota and TRD (Toyota Racing Development) for putting me in this truck. Let’s go celebrate.”

TY MAJESKI, No. 66 FarmPaint Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, ThorSport Racing

    Finishing Position: 4th

How was your race overall and bringing home a top-five finish?

“It was an up and down day for sure, but had really good speed in practice and qualifying. We split that first stage, lost some track position and made some big adjustments to hopefully have paid dividends at the end. Then we got a flat tire right before the end of the second stage. That last stage, I kept getting caught a lap down and couldn’t get it back. Finally, the first caution in the final stage, got back on the lead lap and made our way back up through the field. Had a really good truck, but didn’t run up front because of those circumstances, but really had really fast FarmPaint Toyota Tundra TRD PRO. Love doing this with the ThorSport guys and getting them a good finish.”

MATT CRAFTON, No. 88 Jack Links/Menards Tundra TRD Pro, ThorSport Racing

    Finishing Position: 5th

    How was your race tonight?

“Good run for all of us. We needed that momentum heading into this stretch of races to build the confidence for Jeff (Hensley, crew chief) and every one of these guys. Jeff’s new to the whole 88 group. We needed this. We had great, great long run speed, short run speed was just a little bit off, but I know where we were and why we were off a little bit there. I was hoping for some long runs right there at the end, and I don’t know if we could outrun the 4 (John Hunter Nemechek) because he was really, really good, but I thought we had a second-place truck if we could have had that long run because it was so good. Our Menards Tundra was good and we’ll just keep working from here.”

    • JW Quote: “I’m looking forward to racing again at Darlington this weekend. It’s been a great track for GMS Racing as they swept the races there last year, so I think we have a great opportunity to have a solid run. I believe that we have a good idea of where we need to be for our baseline setup, and as we begin the summer stretch, this is going to be a crucial race to start off on the right foot. We have a bunch of races lined up ahead of us, so a good finish here will help build our momentum going forward.”

Alan on making his second-career start at Darlington: “I’m excited to be going back to Darlington this week to kick off NASCAR’s Throwback Weekend. After making my debut with Niece Motorsports at Darlington last season, it will be good to return to a track with the same team for a change. I cannot wait for our No. 45 AUTOParkit Chevrolet Silverado to hit the track with our throwback paint scheme honoring Jeff Gordon’s iconic flames look. It would not be possible without all of the continued support from AUTOParkit and allowing us to take part in throwback weekend.”

Alan at Darlington Raceway: Alan makes his second-career start at Darlington Raceway Friday night. He was running strong in the top-15 last September before being inadvertently wrecked by the 19 truck.

Alan’s Throwback Truck for Darlington: Alan’s No. 45 AUTOParkit™ Chevrolet Silverado mirrors Jeff Gordon’s 2007 Department of Defense paint scheme featuring Gordon’s iconic flames design.

Last Time Out (Pinty’s Truck Race on Dirt – Start: 31st / Finish: 30th): In his first career dirt race in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Alan started in the back half of the field but held his own, crossing the line 31st in Stage One despite falling a lap down. Alan continued to battle in and out of traffic in the second stage to bring the No. 45 AUTOParkit Chevrolet to a 32nd-place finish in Stage Two.

Alan and the No. 45 took advantage of a few late-race cautions to make adjustments to their Silverado in the closing laps to ultimately come away with a 30th-place result.

Alan remains the Sunoco Rookie of the Year points leader heading into Friday night’s race at Darlington.
