Smith Rallies Back for Second Truck Series Win

McDowell & Gilliland Show Pace Late For Top-16 Cup Finishes

This past weekend featured all three Front Row Motorsports (FRM) teams in action. They raced through the twists and turns of the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas.

Zane Smith and the Speedco Ford F-150 team rallied back late in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event for his second win of the 2022 season.

In Sunday’s 231-mile NASCAR Cup Series race, Michael McDowell brought the Love’s Travel Stops No. 34 Ford Mustang across the line in 13th.

Todd Gilliland and the No. 38 Boot Barn Ford Mustang team had a Cup Series career-best 16th-place finish.

SMITH RALLIES BACK FOR SECOND TRUCK WIN OF 2022

Zane Smith and the No. 38 Speedco Ford F-150 team rolled into COTA coming off a top-five finish the week before at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The team was feeling good heading to Texas.

Smith started off the weekend on the right foot by qualifying on the front row, his highest qualifying run of the season thus far. Looking to maximize points for the day, the team did just that. They played pit strategy to perfection to win both opening stages.

In the final stage, Smith made contact with another truck and his No. 38 Ford went spinning. With the race coming to an end, Smith raced his way from the back to the front. In dramatic fashion, Smith made the race-winning, four-wide pass for the lead after the other leaders made contact. Smith snuck his Speedco Ford low below all three leaders and cruised easily to the win.

    SMITH ON COTA:
“It just goes to show that you’re never out of a race until you cross the finish line. My Speedco guys did great all day giving me what I needed to get the job done and put it in Victory Lane.

“I really want to thank the people from Speedco, everyone who is supporting this program and to Bob Jenkins. We’re having a great time and it’s been a lot of fun.”

    McDOWELL GRABS TOP-15 FINISH

For Michael McDowell and the No. 34 Love’s Ford Mustang team, it was a total team effort over the weekend.

McDowell was confident heading into practice and qualifying. He loves racing at COTA and knew he could compete for a great finish. On Saturday, the team had to work to find the best handling for McDowell. The team had to make a change to the car and fall to the rear for the start of Sunday’s race.

From there, McDowell, crew chief Blake Harris and the entire Love’s crew put on a show racing through the field. Using the first two stages to dial in their Ford Mustang, McDowell took control in the final stage.

He raced up to eighth and held onto a 13th-place result at the end. McDowell got everything out of the car.

    MCDOWELL ON COTA:
“We didn’t unload like we wanted, but the team never gave up all weekend. Saturday was frustrating for everyone, but that’s when Blake and the engineers really dug deep to give us that speed we needed.

“It didn’t happen at the start of the race, but by the end we were running top-10. A few little things different and we could have finished there, but we’ll take 13th today and get on a roll from here.”

GILLILAND SCORES CUP CAREER-BEST FINISH IN COTA:

Todd Gilliland and the No. 38 Boot Barn Ford Mustang started Sunday’s race from 29th, but knew they had the opportunity to have a great day.

Gilliland fought the handling of the car early, finding the car to be loose in the corners. The team quickly went to work making adjustments to help tighten the car up and give it more grip. It worked as Gilliland moved into the top-25 and late in the stages was making passes to get into the top-20.

To show how strong the Boot Barn team is, Gilliland suffered a mechanical issue with the left-front wheel during a pit stop. The team quickly made the right repair on pit road and Gilliland was back on the track faster than ever. He went from the back to 16th at the end.

    GILLILAND ON COTA:
“I want to give a huge shoutout to my Boot Barn crew on pit road and my guys. They saved our race at the end. They fixed the issue and gave us what I needed to make moves at the end. We passed a lot of cars today. The Boot Barn Ford Mustang looked great and I’m ready to keep fighting hard.”

Fourth to First: Zane Smith Takes Checkers in Wild, Overtime Finish at XPEL 225 Camping World Truck Series Clash at COTA

    • Kyle Busch led a race-high 31 laps but got caught up in a last-lap crash with Alex Bowman and Stewart Friesen, ultimately finishing third.
    • Tickets for Sunday’s EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix at Circuit of The Americas are on sale at NASCARatCOTA.com/Tickets.

AUSTIN, Texas (Feb. 23, 2022) – Four drivers, two overtimes and one corner created a finish for the ages as Zane Smith took the checkered flag in the wild XPEL 225 Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) race at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) on Saturday.

Kyle Busch led a race-high 31 laps, but Smith led the one that mattered, coming from fourth to first through the tricky turn 11 hairpin in the second and final overtime. Busch was collected in a crash that also took out contenders Alex Bowman and Stewart Friesen and opened the door for Smith to sweep both stages and take home the victory.

“Truck races are crazy,” Smith said in victory lane following the win, his second of the young season. “You’re never out of it until you’re out of it. That was a wild one.

“Any truck win you can get feels so great, especially when it happens like that in such dramatic fashion. It’s a huge statement from this team. Every single race this year, I’ve been in contention to win.”

Busch, who leads the NCWTS with 61 career wins, seemed destined to earn his first-ever truck series victory on a road course after pulling away from the field late, but the crash relegated him to a third-place finish behind Smith and John Hunter Nemechek.

“Great race all day,” Busch said, crediting his team for giving him a fast Safelite Toyota Tundra. “It doesn’t matter if you deserve it or not, you’ve got to be the first one to the checkers and we were not.”

Ben Rhodes finished fourth while Busch’s teammate, Chandler Smith, finished fifth.

    TOYOTA QUOTES

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK, No. 4 ROMCO Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 2nd

Can you describe those closing laps and how good this run was for you?

“The season has been frustrating for sure. We never give up at KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports). We never give up as an organization. I didn’t have the fastest truck today. We struggled most of the day. I got spun by Zane (Smith). I’m a little ticked off there. That’s two weeks in a row that we’ve got screwed by the 38. On to next week. I’m going to run the Richmond Xfinity race. Thanks to ROMCO Equipment, Toyota, everyone at KBM, TRD for all they do for us. Hopefully, we can keep this ship righted the right way and take this and carry the momentum. It’s way better finishing second than 24th, 25th, 24th in the first three. Still got a lot to go, a lot to learn and a lot to build on, but a long season ahead.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 51 Safelite AutoGlass Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 3rd

What did you see at the end that happened that forced you to give up the lead at that point?

“We had a great race all day. I really appreciate everyone at KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) and their hard work and everyone there who does a good job building such fast trucks. I felt like we deserved that one, but it doesn’t matter if you deserve it or not. It’s just a matter if you get it. You have to be the first one to the checkered flag to win these things and we just weren’t.”

BEN RHODES, No. 99 Tenda Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, ThorSport Racing

    Finishing Position: 4th

How are you feeling after a top-five finish?

“I’m definitely glad it is over. I’m pretty tired, I’m not going to lie. Not as bad as I’ve been at some other places. Daytona road course really wore me out a few years ago, but overall our Tenda Toyota Tundra was pretty fast. We made some improvements from last year. I wanted one more spot. I wanted a podium in front of Kyle Busch. I was hoping some of those guys were going to run out of gas. I could feel mine start to sputter and I thought, man, there is hope, but fourth-place isn’t bad. It’s a good points day and we are going to go on to the next one and see what we can do.”

CHANDLER SMITH, No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, Kyle Buch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 5th

What was the biggest challenge for you today at COTA?

“Track position and then at the very end – we probably would have ran second if everything had went good. We just had a loose wheel and had to come in and get tires, and we still ended up salvaging a top-five at the very end with the green-white-checkered. Happy with my whole Safelite, ChargeMe Toyota KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) group and on forward.”

Hocevar on the first road course event of the season at Circuit of the Americas: “I feel good about the No. 42 team’s return to Circuit of the Americas this week. We ran seventh last year in wet conditions and the track never truly dried out until the very end. Last time out (Fr8 208 – Start: 5th / Finish: 27th): Hocevar ran in line with the leaders in the opening laps of Saturday’s Fr8 208, making his way to third before the No. 42 fell out of line with ten to go in stage one culminating in an 18th-place result. He rebounded to make his way back into the top-10 on lap 49 and held on to earn two stage points with a ninth-place finish in stage two. After restarting the final stage fourth, Hocevar reported a tire rub on the left rear and made a pair of stops under caution to remedy the issue. The No. 42 team continued to work to correct the issue and ultimately settled for a 27th-place finish.

Circuit of the Americas is one of the few tracks on the schedule that I have experience at. Bringing my experience from running Trans Am TA2 and legend cars on road courses to the track this week gives our No. 45 team a really good chance to have a strong run and we’re looking forward to it.”

Alan at Circuit of the Americas: Saturday’s XPEL 225 marks Alan’s second career start at Circuit of the Americas in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS). Alan ran to a 23rd-place finish in the 2021 event after starting 32nd.

Alan makes his fourth career road course start in the NCWTS Saturday. He finished 36th in his first career truck series start on the road course at Daytona International Speedway last season and placed 32nd at Watkins Glen last August.

On the Truck: Alan and the No. 45 Chevrolet Silverado will run the AUTOParkit™ scheme for Saturday’s XPEL 225 at Circuit of the Americas.

Last time out (Fr8 208 – Start: 24th / Finish: 33rd): Alan battled his way through traffic in the opening laps of Saturday’s Fr8 208 after starting 24th. Following a 30th-place finish in stage one, the team made key adjustments and Alan made his way into the top-15 by the end of stage two, lining up to restart in 14th for the final stage. Poised for a top-10 finish, Alan’s fate was sealed on lap 68 when he was collected in a multi-truck incident in turn three that caused nose damage to the No. 45. Alan made several stops to pit road to repair the damage, but an overheating issue persisted and brought his day to an abrupt end.

Wright on making his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start at Circuit of the Americas: “I am excited to get to the Circuit of the Americas for the first road course event of the season. We had some good speed there last year with the NASCAR Xfinity Series start. I am looking forward to what we can do in our No. 44 F.N.B. Corporation Chevrolet Silverado. It is great having support from F.N.B. Corporation again this week in what should be a solid result for Niece Motorsports. I know our team has been working hard in the shop to prepare this truck for Saturday.”

Wright at Circuit of the Americas: This weekend marks Wright’s debut appearance at the Circuit of the Americas with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS). Wright has one start in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) at the Circuit of the Americas. In 2021 with Sam Hunt Racing, he qualified in the 36th-place and finished in the 32nd-place, due to a mechanical failure.

In one NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start on a road course, Kris Wright recorded a 25th-place finish at the DAYTONA (Fla.) Road Course on August 16, 2020. The start was his debut in NASCAR national series competition in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, his single series start of the 2020 season.

On the Truck: Wright and the No. 44 Chevrolet Silverado will carry the red, white, and blue F.N.B. Corporation paint scheme Saturday.

Last Time Out (Fr8 208 – Start: 21st / Finish: 21st): Wright and the No. 44 team worked to find the right balance on the F.N.B. Corporation Chevrolet Silverado in the opening laps of Saturday’s Fr8 208 and after finishing stage one 32nd, he made his way into the top-20 to start the final stage. Wright was running 22nd when the caution flag flew on lap 90, and shortly after the restart, he suffered a flat right front tire that caused him to make contact with the outside wall in turn three. The No. 44 team worked to make repairs on pit road and kept Wright on the lead lap to earn a 21st-place finish.

    • Chassis History/Info: Grant Enfinger will take GMS Racing chassis no. 138 to battle in the first road course race of the season on Saturday. This Silverado was originally built in 2021, competing at COTA and Watkins Glen with Sheldon Creed, where it finished fifth and third, respectively. At COTA, this truck led fourteen laps and contended for the win throughout the entire race. – Building Momentum: After a disappointing start to his 2022 campaign which saw two late crashes in two races, Enfinger showed some great signs of speed this past weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Grant finished second in Stage one of the race, and was able to lead the field for fourteen laps. Though a pit road penalty forced him to the tail end of the lead lap, the No. 23 Chevrolet was able to pass a significant amount of trucks en route to a 12th place finish. The solid finish catapulted Enfinger up eleven spots in the points standings, where he currently sits in 16th position.
    • Short Tracker Turned Road Course Sleeper?: Grant will be the first person to tell you that he is not a natural born road course ace. However, the stats might show otherwise. Last season, driving a truck built by GMS Fabrication, Enfinger had one of his best runs of the season at COTA, finishing in fourth place. Don’t count the veteran out of your fantasy lineup as he turns left and right this weekend. – GE Quote: “From slow speed hairpins to high speed sweeping corners, COTA has a little bit of everything. I’m not really a big road course guy, but I’ve been working hard on it the last couple years. With all of the prep that Team Chevy has helped us drivers with and all the work that Charles and our No. 23 Champion Power Equipment guys have put into this weekend, I’m excited to see what we will have.”

    • Chassis History/Info: Jack Wood will drive GMS Racing chassis no. 140 at the Circuit Of The Americas this weekend. This truck was also built last season and competed in two road course races with Zane Smith behind the wheel. Finishes of eighth at COTA and sixth at Watkins Glen are highlighted on this chassis’ rep sheet, highlighted with four laps led at The Glen.
    • Where It All Started: Jack Wood returns to the site of his first-career start in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this weekend. The Californian made his series debut at COTA in 2021, making his first of twelve starts that season. - Preparation Is Key: In his spare time, Jack has taken on some new challenges to help bolster his road course racing program. Wood has raced in the TransAm TA2 Series on multiple occasions at Watkins Glen International, Brainerd International Raceway, and Sebring Raceway. Earlier this month, he spent time at the Spring Mountain Road Course with other Team Chevy drivers, testing the capabilities of new Corvette production cars on a closed course.
    • JW Quote: “It’s pretty cool to come back to the track where I made my first truck start last season. Last year’s race was super tough in the rain with the constantly changing track conditions on top of my lack of road course experience. But, over the course of the year, I have been spending a lot of time on road courses, honing my craft so I can become a better driver on them. My hopes are high for COTA, I think that GMS will race well here as they did last season, so I am looking forward to heading there and putting another solid run together with my No. 24 team.”
