GMS Racing Camping World Truck Series Darlington Raceway II Recap

Sheldon Creed, No. 2 LiftKits4Less Chevrolet Silverado

    START: 1st

    FINISH: 1st

    POINTS: 1st

    • Sheldon Creed entered Darlington with one goal: earn Playoffs points and win. Having locked himself into the Round of 8 with a win in Gateway, the No. 2 team had no stress about Sunday’s In It To Win It 200.
    • Creed led the field to the green from the pole position, but had to overcome adversity early as his Silverado received heavy rear end damage on the lap 21 restart. The crew went to work on fixing as much of the damage as possible, and miraculously, the truck never skipped a beat.
    • Pure domination by the GMS Racing team resulted in Creed’s third win of the season. An incredible drive by Sheldon, as he led a total of 104 of 147 laps. Notably, Creed swept both of the Darlington races this season. Perfect momentum to start the Playoffs!

Back2Back: Sheldon Creed is the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship points leader after his win at Darlington Raceway. Creed looks to continue to build on his momentum and go for a clean sweep of the Round of 10 next time out at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Quote: “Gosh, what a tough race! We certainly earned that one, even though my truck wasn’t handling great early on, the crew kept working on it and we got better each time out. I drove super hard to stay in the clean air, that damage really hurt us early on. Pit crew was phenomenal all race long, best they have been all year. It feels so great to go back to back and open up the Playoffs with two wins!”

Zane Smith, No. 21 Chevy Accessories Chevrolet Silverado

    START: 10th

    FINISH: 9th

    POINTS: 9th

    • Zane Smith entered Darlington on the outside looking in for the Playoffs picture, as a disappointing early end at Gateway put the No. 21 behind the eight ball. Early on, it was evident that Smith would stand a fighting chance at competing for the win at Darlington.
    • Smith finished an impressive third place in Stage 1, and backed it up with a sixth place finish in Stage 2. With bonus points at a premium, the two stage finishes assisted his Playoffs bid. The No. 21 team fought through adversity on pit road multiple times, forcing Smith to drive through the field twice.
    • Ultimately, Smith rebounded to a ninth place finish in the South Carolina heat. Though the results might not show the entire story, it is undeniable the fight that his team brought to the table.

21in21: Zane Smith continues to find himself below the cutline entering the final race of the Round of 10 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Smith needs to gain five points on his nearest competition to advance to the Round of 8, a task that is very doable.

Quote: “More mistakes today. Jack failed on the second stop, then I made a big mistake trying to maximize pit road trying to get around the 88 and spun myself. We came from the back three times to finish ninth. Just five points out heading into Bristol.”

Chase Purdy, No. 23 Bama Buggies Chevrolet Silverado

    START: 17th

    FINISH: 15th

    POINTS: 19th

    • Chase Purdy returned to Darlington with a vengeance after he did not receive the finish he deserved in May due to contact with a lapped truck. Riding the high of his best-career finish at Gateway, Purdy was eager to have two solid finishes in a row. A 17th place starting spot meant that Chase would have to dig deep from the drop of the green flag.
    • The No. 23 Bama Buggies Silverado fought hard from start to finish, running 17th in Stage 1 and 14th in Stage 2. Towards the end of the race, Purdy made up even more spots as he continued to tame the historic track, even breaking into the Top 10 at one point.
    • Purdy brought his Chevrolet home with a respectable 15th place finish at Darlington, and heading into the series’ next event at Bristol, the No. 23 team has some solid momentum behind them. Purdy is thirty points behind his nearest competitor in the standings.

Quote: “We had a fast Silverado today! I spun the tires on a late restart that cost our team some valuable track position, and ultimately, our chances at a solid Top 10 finish. Regardless, it was a great effort from my No. 23 guys today, onto Bristol in less than two weeks!”

Jack Wood, No. 24 Chevy Accessories Chevrolet Silverado

    START: 15th

    FINISH: 30th

    POINTS: 29th

    • Jack Wood made his first ever start at Darlington Raceway in Sunday’s In It To Win It 200. As a rookie with no previous track time and minimal experience, Jack faced a tough battle ahead of himself with the Lady in Black.
    • Wood faded back early on as he learned the track layout, but kept his nose clean through Stage 1, where he finished 24th. In Stage 2, the No. 24 was on the move, as it began to pick up spots one by one. Unfortunately for Jack, however, disaster struck on lap 67, as he was forced into the wall by another competitor. With major front, rear, and side damage, Jack was knocked out of contention for the remainder of the race.
    • Wood and the No. 24 crew continued to fight and never gave up, but their day resulted in a disappointing 30th place finish. Jack will return to NCWTS competition in Las Vegas Motor Speedway on September 24th, as Doug Coby takes over the reigns next time out at Bristol for his series debut.

Quote: “Man, what a wild first race at Darlington. It was tough to get all of that damage in Stage 2, but it was still a good learning experience as we were able to run all the laps today. We will move onto the next one!”

Tyler Ankrum, No. 26 LiUNA! Chevrolet Silverado

    START: 25th

    FINISH: 18th

    POINTS: 13th

    • Tyler Ankrum raced his heart out at Darlington, starting deep in the field in 25th. As the No. 26 LiUNA! Chevrolet passed several trucks through the pack, it appeared as if Ankrum was going to have a good finish.
    • Early on, Ankrum found out pretty quickly why the track is labeled “Too Tough to Tame”, as he made contact with the wall in turn 3 and earned his first Darlington stripe. The damage was enough to hinder Ankrum’s Silverado in a significant way, as he was not able to recover. Stage 1 had the No. 26 positioned in 16th, but by Stage 2, he had dropped to 19th.
    • Officially, Ankrum was scored with an 18th place finish. Not the finish that he was looking for, but with all things considered, it could have been worse. The team will try to rebound in the series’ next outing at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Quote: “We started off decently today, made up a good amount of spots in Stage 1, but that was unfortunately the highlight of my day. Our truck really never had the long run speed needed to contend up at the front. Definitely not the finish we were looking for, but we will move onto the next one and keep on working.”

    Track: Darlington Raceway, 1.366-mile oval
    Race: 17 of 22
Event: In It To Win It 200 (147 laps, 200 miles)

Hailie Deegan, No. 1 Built Ford Tough F-150

    Start: 14th
    Finish: 29th

    • During the competition caution on lap 15, Deegan reported her truck had no grip on the front tires. She stayed out during the caution and restarted 14th.
    • As the laps clicked off in the stage, Deegan reported her F-150 was snappy loose on exit and she closed the stage out in 21st. During the break she pitted for fuel, four tires and adjustments.
    • Deegan started Stage 2 from the 20th position. Another caution was displayed on lap 67 and the California native reported the balance of her truck was much better and she stayed on the racing surface. She restarted 15th.
    • Late in the second stage, Deegan made an incredible save in her F-150 and ultimately ended it in the 19th spot.
    • The Ford driver pitted during the break and restarted 17th for the final stage. On lap 106, the caution came out after a competitor spun and Deegan attempted to dodge the spinning truck, but was struck by it in the right-rear which resulted in damage forcing her to pit from 18th.
    • Another caution was displayed on lap 111 after another competitor made contact with Deegan which caused her left-rear tire to go down. She received service on pit road and restarted 27th.
    • With seven laps to go in the event, Deegan radioed that she thought she had a right-side tire going down and made an unexpected pit stop for service which sent her a multiple laps down. The team confirmed the tire was losing pressure and Deegan ended up finishing 29th.

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Ford Performance F-150

    Start: 22nd
    Finish: 24th

    • Tanner Gray started the event from the 22nd spot and was 14th when the competition caution came out on lap 15. Gray remained on the track and restarted eighth. Throughout two more quick cautions, Gray continued to stay on the racing surface and restarted 14th after the lap-27 caution.
    • The Ford Performance driver completed Stage 1 in 18th and reported his truck was too free on entry. He pitted for service and started the second stage from 15th.
    • A caution on lap 67 brought Gray down pit road for fuel, four tires and adjustments to help with his loose-handling issues. He restarted 25th.
    • With two laps to go in Stage 2, the New Mexico native took over the 10th position. At the stage break, he pitted for service and restarted the final stage from seventh.
    • On lap 104 in the final stage, Gray made contact with the outside wall while running in the top-10. The damage forced him to pit for repairs which sent him one lap down. Gray remained one lap down for the duration of the race and ended it 24th.

Next event: UNOH 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee on September 16 at 9 p.m. ET.

    TOYOTA QUOTES

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK, No. 4 Mobil 1 Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 2nd

What more did you need to catch Sheldon Creed in the closing laps?

“Clean air. Just super hard to pass. Same thing as last fall, same thing we fight in the Truck Series every week. I don’t know, we have to do a little bit better – think we could have controlled the race. They weren’t going to get by us. We made a last ditch effort. Proud of all the KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) guys – Mobil 1, Toyota, TRD and everyone who helps. Just have to say thank you. This one hurts. We had the dominant truck here in the spring and came back and ran second here today. On to Bristol. We should be starting first or second. Hopefully we can go get a win there. The only thing that matters is that we locked ourselves into the next round today. That’s all it is. The eyes are set on the prize. We want to win every single week, but there is a big trophy at the end of the year that means the most.”

What did you take away from this race?

“We just needed track position. We needed clean air. We addressed it, I felt like the right way and had a truck to contend. What mattered today if we couldn’t win was locking ourselves into the next round and advancing. We were able to do that by a pretty good margin I felt like. Overall, a solid performance. Our Toyota Tundra was fast. Just needed a little bit more. It definitely stings knowing we had the dominant truck here in the spring, gave that one away. Then to come back and run second, it hurts. We’ll take the momentum, not going to dwell on this. Just one race of the Playoffs and now we’re focused on the next round. Bristol doesn’t mean anything to us other than to go out there and try to win. Then the next round starts and all that focus is on those three races to make it to Phoenix. Eyes on the big trophy at the end of the year.”

STEWART FRIESEN, No. 52 Halmar International Toyota Tundra, Halmar Friesen Racing

    Finishing Position: 3rd

Did you have anything for the lead two trucks in the closing laps?

“Great day for the Halmar team – thanks to Chris Larson for everything. He’s always been there for me in my career. It was cool –- our best run for HFR, proud of that. Another good day for us. We got off sequence and we just fought a loose condition all day. Got off sequence and got those tires and we thought we might have something. They just kind of equalized at the end and I could just chameleon the guys in front of me and not really do anything more with it. Proud of my guys, good momentum for us.”

CHANDLER SMITH, No. 18 JBL Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 7th

How was the race today and how do you feel heading into the final race of this Playoff round?

“Overall, I felt like we had a really solid day. We were inside the top-10, top-five most of the day. Fell back there at the very end. Just started to lack a little lateral grip up the hill and I couldn’t really run the top due to just way too free right when I would touch the throttle. I couldn’t keep my momentum up at all. Overall, we had a really fast JBL Audio Toyota Tundra and I’m really happy heading to Bristol.”

How do you feel about your chances at Bristol?

“It’s Bristol, that’s the thing about it. You can be really good and then the lapped car can screw you, kind of like they were doing today a little bit and you’re out of it. I feel like we’ll be good, we just have to stay out of trouble.”

MATT CRAFTON, No. 88 Ideal Door/Menards Toyota Tundra, ThorSport Racing

    Finishing Position: 10th

How was your race today and how do you feel heading into Bristol next week?

“I don’t know where we are, but I think we should have a little bit of a cushion and be able to just go to Bristol and race and not have to worry about stage points and all that, just go there and win. I’m sure that’s what a lot of them are going to do. If you’re stuck in that box where you have to stay out and get stage points, that’s not ideal. All in all, we had a lot better truck than a 10th place truck. On the first pit stop, we broke a brake line and had no brakes the rest of the race. It wasn’t fun.”

Over the past nine weeks, the Mooresville, N.C.-based team has methodically been working to improve their program with the intent to compete for top-20 finishes for the remainder of their 2021 Truck Series schedule.

“Our first two races of the season were great and we thought we were heading in the right direction, but the next three races we were missing something a little bit, so we decided to take some time and regroup,” offered Davis.

“The last two months or so we’ve been diligent in working on the areas we feel like we needed to improve and I feel like we’re coming back to Darlington with a refreshed and recharged attitude and we can look ahead to the race this weekend with a positive outlook.”

Davis, 22, will make his second NCWTS start at the track Too Tough To Tame in Sunday’s In It To Win It 200 and while he was one of the 19-trucks involved in a Lap 119 restart in the spring, the two-time ARCA Menards Series East winner was extremely thankful for the track time before the incident.

“I definitely learned a lot about Darlington before getting swept into the crash,” added Davis. “We were making steady progress throughout the race. It definitely was a challenge to come to a tough track like Darlington without any laps and go straight into race mode.

“We were making strides though and I was happy about that. We will be starting deep in the field on Sunday afternoon, so our goal is just to be progressive and make positive adjustments with our No. 11 INOX Lubricants Toyota Tundra and hope we can find ourselves on the cusp of a top-20 finish at the end of the race.”

In February, SDM announced that INOX Supreme Lubricants will serve as the team’s primary partner this season.

INOX product range was first released in 1989 with the Original INOX MX3 Lubricant. The original MX3 product was in development stages for two years prior to release with testing and focus on creating the right product for the market.

The INOX product range continues to grow with 12 products on the market, each with their own many specialized qualities used in all different industries. All their products are tested and trialed before hitting the market to ensure the best of quality is maintained in the INOX name. INOX products are available at all major industrial, electrical, automotive, hardware, bearing and mining, marine, fishing and tackle outlets, plus many more locations.

A wholly owned Australian company Candan Industries is now exporting to over 25 countries including United States of America, Canada, France, South Africa, New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

“Excited to have a long-time friendship turn into a season-long partnership with INOX Supreme Lubricants,” said Davis. “I can’t thank Angel and James at INOX enough for their continued support and partnership with our small team.

“We use their products day to day on our race team and in our machines at our business. A quality product and amazing people helped bring this all together.”

Based on metrics set by NASCAR without practice or qualifying, Davis will lineup 36th for the 147-lap race.

Melvin “Woody” Burns who started the year with SDM as car chief has been promoted to crew chief for the NASCAR Next alumnus for the remainder of the 2021 NCWTS season.

Entering Darlington, Davis, 22, has 28 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts to his credit with a career-best finish of seventh at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in Feb. 2018, with additional top-10s at Texas Motor Speedway (June 2018) and Kentucky Speedway (July 2019).

Following Darlington, Spencer Davis Motorsports plans to compete at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway in the Victoria’s Voice Foundation 200 presented by Westgate Resorts on Fri. Sept. 24. 2021.

“As a team, we head to Darlington with some momentum and confidence after our performance at World Wide Technology Raceway a couple of weeks ago. It really was a strong race for our team. I really wanted a couple of spots better, but we made great progression throughout the race and earned a top-20 finish.

“That is definitely something to build on for this Sunday.”

Tate Fogleman Truck Series Speedway Stats: At NASCAR Camping World Truck Series tracks classified as a speedway, Fogleman has made 25 starts throughout his career carrying an improved average finishing position of 23.6.

World Wide Technology Raceway | Toyota 200 Race Recap: In the most recent NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, Fogleman made his 42nd career NCWTS start.

Starting 24th based on the metrics set by NASCAR without practice or qualifying, Fogleman’s No. 12 Solid Rock Carriers Chevrolet quickly climbed from his mid-pack starting position and easily contended for a top-20 finish.

A late-race restart, however, allowed Fogleman to gain the track position he needed to pick up a few positions and earn a strong 14th place finish.

The effort was his fifth top-20 finish of the 2021 NCWTS season and his best result since finishing ninth at Knoxville Raceway in July.

To The Point(s): Entering Darlington, Fogleman sits 20th in the championship standings with 196 points earned. Fogleman overtook Christian Eckes to enter the top-20 and stands 12 points behind Chase Purdy for 19th.

    Tate Fogleman Pre-Race Quotes:

On Darlington: “This weekend is a chance at redemption for our Young’s Motorsports team. We had such a good truck in the spring but unfortunately with that huge wreck at the front with the leaders on the restart, we found ourselves a victim of circumstances and left with a lousy finish.

“Sunday will be my third start at Darlington, and I find myself getting better there with every lap turned. Ryan did a great job setting up the truck in May, so we will build off that and see if we can build off our Gateway finish with another top-15 run this weekend with our No. 12 DogeCola Chevrolet Silverado.”

On 2021 Season: “I’m proud of everyone on this Young’s Motorsports team – we are finally going in the right direction.

“Start to finish – Gateway was a lot of fun and things seemed to go our way. We are certainly capable of finishing in the top-15 on a weekly basis, so that’s our goal not only this weekend at Darlington but for the rest of the 2021 season.”

    Driver: Spencer Boyd
    Primary Partner(s): Dan-O’s Seasoning

Starting 32nd based on the metrics set by NASCAR without practice or qualifying,
Boyd’s No. 20 Hans Wiemann Chevrolet Silverado charged to inside the top-20 in the closing laps of Stage 3.

A late-race restart, however, allowed Boyd to gain even more positions on the track at his hometown race, taking the checkered flag in 16th, second in class of the Young’s Motorsports team.

The impressive effort by Boyd is his first top-20 finish since finishing 13th in the season-opening race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February.

To The Point(s): Entering Darlington, Boyd sits 25th in the championship standings.

57 points separate Boyd from 20th in the championship standings currently held by teammate Tate Fogleman with six races remaining this season.

Young’s Motorsports’ No. 20 team also secures 35th in the NCWTS owner standings.

Chasing That W: Boyd is eyeing his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory for himself and Young’s Motorsports.

In 2019 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Boyd pulled an upset during the Truck Series Playoffs by winning the Sugarland Shines 250 at the 2.66-mile superspeedway edging Todd Gilliland by 0.027 seconds.

Truck Series Rundown: In five years of Truck Series competition, Boyd has 60 career Truck Series starts with one win, two top-five and two top-10 finishes and a championship best of 17th in 2019.

On Darlington: “Glad to be back at the track this weekend and hope we can have a solid finish with our No. 20 Dan-O’s Chevrolet Silverado.”

On Dan-O’s Seasoning Partnership: “I use Dan-O’s on a weekly basis. My nutritionist keeps my diet to a lot of chicken and fish. Thankfully Dan-O’s is low in sodium but big in flavor so my meals aren’t boring. I use it so much they even made a bottle with my face on it last year!”

Chandler Smith – No. 18 JBL Tundra Camping World Trucks Darlington 2 Preview

Chandler Smith: Driver, No. 18 JBL® Toyota

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Overview:
Event: In It To Win It 200, Race 17 of 22 (Race 2 in the Round of 10), 147 Laps – 45/45/57; 200.1 Miles
Location: Darlington (S.C.) Raceway at (1.33-mile egg-shaped oval)
    Date/Broadcast: Sept. 5, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR 90

Mr. Smith Meets the Lady in Black:

    • Chandler Smith and the No. 18 JBL team head to Darlington Raceway for the second race in the Round of 10 of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series playoffs looking to rebound from a disappointing start to the rookie driver’s inaugural playoff campaign. A hub issue in the opening stage at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway forced Smith to the garage for several laps and relegated the Georgia native to a 28th-place finish in the first of three races in the Round of 10. The Georgia native currently sits 18 points below the cutoff line for advancing to the Round of 8 with two races remaining.
    • Smith finished the regular season 10th on the playoff grid, 10 points above the cutoff line for qualifying for the post season, after posting three top-five and five top-10 finishes across 15 races. Smith and fellow Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Carson Hocevar are the only two drivers who are competing for a driver’s championship for the first time. The other eight contenders have all competed for the Truck Series championship at least one time in previous seasons.
    • While this is his first competing for a Camping World Truck Series driver’s championship, Smith has at least one Truck Series start at all seven tracks that will be contested during the 2021 playoffs, including two starts at Darlington. Earlier this year at the 1.33-mile-oval, Smith finished the opening stage seventh and Stage Two fourth before getting caught up in a 17-truck pileup on the frontstretch that would relegate him to a 27th-place finish. Last September, the talented teenager was running sixth with just under 20 laps remaining when a loose wheel forced him to pit road under green-flag conditions and left him with a disappointing 23rd-place finish.
    • The 19-year-old driver ranks third among full-time Truck Series drivers with 165 laps led this season. He accumulated 119 of those laps led over the final four races of the regular season.
    • The Toyota Racing Development driver has 11 top-five, and 14 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 15.6 across 32 career Camping World Truck Series starts. His runner-up finish at Knoxville Raceway earlier this season equaled the career-best finish he achieved at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in 2019.
    • While this is Smith’s first time taking part in the driver’s portion of the NASCAR Camping World Serie playoffs, he has been a part of the owner’s playoffs for the No. 51 team each of the last two seasons. Last year, he recorded top-five finishes in all three races of the Round of 10 (Bristol Motor Speedway, Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway) advancing the No. 51 team to the Round of 8. He opened the Round of 8 up with another top-five finish at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City before an accident relegated him to a 21st-place finish at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth in the second race of the round and then after Brandon Jones finished 17th in the final race in the Round of 8 the No. 51 team was eliminated from playoff contention.
    • Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman calls the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team this season. Stockman led the No. 51 team to four wins in his first season atop the pit box at KBM in 2020. He came to the organization with experience as a crew chief in all three national series, including a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s Truck Series drivers have three starts at Darlington, with Dillon’s fifth-place finish in 2010 being the best result. In Xfinity Series action, his best result across six starts was also a fifth-place result with Dillon in 2012.
    • JBL, the authority in engineering superior sound, will be the primary sponsor for the No. 18 team for the final time this season at Darlington.

    Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:

What will your approach be at Darlington being 18 points below the cutoff line with two races remaining in this round?
“I think that you definitely have to look at the points a little bit, but at the same aspect you have to go out there and whatever happens, happens. Gateway was out of my control. At the end of the day, I can only do so much for myself. We have to regroup as a team and do our best at Darlington.”

You’ve had fast Tundras at Darlington, is it a track that seems to fit your driving style?
“I think it’s more of the characteristics that Darlington holds. It’s a really technical race track, it’s really wore out and you have to come completely off the throttle – which is a strong suite of mine. I haven’t been that great at mile and a halves lately, so Darlington is definitely one of my stronger race tracks and I’m looking to bring our JBL Toyota Tundra to victory lane.”

How will the conditions at Darlington be Sunday for a day race compared to what you experienced earlier this year with an evening race?
“Overall, I think it’s going to be a lot more greasier. With higher temperatures than it was the last time we were there it is going to make the track temperature a lot hotter and that will make it really slick.”

    Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

    • Across 32 career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts has recorded 258 laps led, 11 top-five and 14 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 15.6.
    • Posted an average finish of 7.7 across his final seven of 12 total Truck Series starts in 2020, including third-place finishes in the series finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway and his first career superspeedway start at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in October.
    • Produced three top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.2 across his first four career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts in 2019. He led 55 laps and finished eighth in his Gander Trucks debut at Iowa Speedway last July and then posted top-five finishes in his final three starts, including a runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
    • Has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 1783 laps led, 22 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.4 across 34 career ARCA Menards Series starts. Set an ARCA Racing Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career and earned his first victory after leading a race-high 102 laps at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in his fourth series start.

Chandler Smith’s No. 18 JBL Tundra:
KBM-70: The No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team will unload chassis number KBM-070 for Sunday’s 147-lap event at Darlington. Smith has piloted this Tundra three times this year, including a fifth-place finish it its most recent outing at Texas Motor Speedway in June and a sixth-place result at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway in May.
Click here to see KBM-70 Performance Profile

    KBM Notes of Interest:

KBM drivers have collected one win, 162 laps led, two top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 14.3 across eight starts at Darlington. Kasey Kahne led a race-high 95 laps en route to victory in the 2011 event.
KBM holds the Camping World Truck Series records for most career wins (88) and most wins in a single season (14 in 2014). With his victory at the Bristol Motor Speedway Dirt Track, Truex Jr. became the 16th different driver to win a Truck Series event for KBM. In addition to collecting a series-record seven Owner’s Championships, the organization has produced two championship-winning drivers: Erik Jones (2015) and Christopher Bell (2017).
The No. 18, the number which was on the first Tundra that went to victory lane for KBM in 2010, has 21 career victories.

    Neme’chek’ The Facts:

    • John Hunter Nemechek and the No. 4 Mobil 1 team head into the second race in the Round of 10 in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season at Darlington Raceway 55 points above the cutoff line for advancing to the Round of 8 with two races remaining in the round. Nemechek had a tough opening race of the playoffs, finishing 22nd at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway after experiencing power issues and a braking issue in the Final Stage. Despite the disappointing results, the 24-year-old driver was able to remain well above the cutoff line thanks in large part to the 49 playoff points he accumulated during the regular season.
    • The Toyota Racing driver is competing in the Camping World Truck Series playoffs for the third time in his career. He finished eighth in the championship standings for his family-owned team, NEMCO Motorsports, in 2016 and 2017. He qualified for the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs in 2019 and finished the final standings in the seventh position.
    • Nemechek will be making his second career start at Darlington in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series competition. Nemechek dominated the early stages of the Truck Series event at the 1.33-mile egg-shaped oval in May, leading a race-high 65 laps and bringing home the Stage 2 win before getting turned into the outside wall while leading on a restart with just under 30 laps remaining. After repairs were made to his damaged Tundra by the over-the-wall crew the talented wheelman was able to work his way back inside the top 10 in the closing laps and ended the night in the eighth spot. In 2020, Nemechek made three NASCAR Cup Series starts at Darlington with a best finish of ninth coming in NASCAR’s return to racing last May following a 10-week shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. In 2019, Nemechek made his sole NASCAR Xfinity Series start at the 1.366-mile facility and finished 21st.
    • The second-generation driver has put together a remarkable season thus far in his first season driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM). In addition to leading the circuit in race wins (five) and stage wins (nine), he leads the Truck Series in top fives (nine), laps led (487), fastest laps run (244), driver rating (115.4), average running position (6.251) and average finish (7.9). Nemechek was also crowned the regular season champion.
    • Nemechek registered his fifth Truck Series win of 2021 June 26 at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. The talented wheelman was able to beat KBM owner-driver Kyle Busch head-to-head for the third time this season. Nemechek also bested his boss at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway in March and at Richmond (Va.) Raceway in April. Busch finished second to his pupil in all three of those events. Additionally, Nemechek has produced victories at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.
    • Nemechek is an 11-time winner in Camping World Truck Series action, winning at least one race each season from 2015 to 2018 for his family-owned team, NEMCO Motorsports, and returning to victory lane this year with KBM. Across 118 career starts in NASCAR’s third division, the second-generation driver has compiled two poles, 1096 laps led, 37 top-five and 62 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 12.5.
    • Eric Phillips returned to KBM to lead the No. 4 team this season. Phillips led the No. 18 team at KBM in its debut season in 2010 and helped build the organization into one of the premier teams in all of NASCAR before departing at the end of the 2014 season. Under his guidance, the No. 18 team won eight races in its inaugural campaign and became the first team in Truck Series history to capture an owner’s championship in its first season of competition. In 2014, the Illinois native led the No. 51 team to an owner’s championship and his team’s 10 wins spearheaded KBM to a single-season Truck Series record of 14 wins. His 42 career Truck Series victories make him the winningest crew chief in Truck Series history, with 32 of those coming while at KBM. At Darlington, Phillips has four starts with one win coming in 2011 when Kasey Kahne led a race-high 95 laps driving KBM’s No. 18 Tundra.

    John Hunter Nemechek, Driver Q&A:

How special would it be to get a win at Darlington?

“Darlington, I’ve only run there two or three times, but I’ve always loved running there. There is so much history there, it’s such a tough race track, it’s demanding, you don’t want to get a Darlington stripe – I can tell you that. The race track is so worn out. It’s such a fun race track to race at. For me, being able to go win at those race tracks that have so much history would mean so much.”

After having a dominant truck in the spring race at Darlington but not getting the win are you eager to get back there?
“Last time at Darlington we got wrecked on one of the final restarts and gave our race away. When you have a dominant truck like we did – leading most of the laps and winning a stage, and we were pretty much checked out – there wasn’t many people that could run with us there. We were saving our stuff, trying to wait until the end and I think when it gets down to it and you lose a race that you are so dominant at it, it makes you feel heartbroken that you should’ve won that race. For us, I’m glad that we are able to go back a second time now – that wasn’t previously scheduled for us. Hopefully, we can go get some redemption this weekend!”

How will the conditions at Darlington be Sunday for a day race compared to what you experienced earlier this year with an evening race?
“It’s going to be hot, slick and you are going to slide around a lot more. I feel like when it is at night, you definitely have more grip. Tire fall off may not be as bad or you may not fight the same handling characteristics that you will during the day. I definitely feel like the race track is going to be different. Luckily, we are taking the same truck, but setup is going to be different because of the night to day difference.”
