DGR NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race Recap: Charlotte

    Friday, May 28
Track: Charlotte Motor Speedway, 1.5-mile quad oval
    Race: 10 of 22
Event: North Carolina Education Lottery 200 (134 laps, 200 miles)

Hailie Deegan, No. 1 Toter Ford F-150

    Start: 12th
    Finish: 13th

    • After qualifying was rained out, Deegan lined up 12th to start the event. She reached the top-10 just before the halfway point of the stage. The race remained green throughout the stage and Deegan completed it in 10th. During the stage break, the Toter driver visited pit road for fuel, four tires and adjustments.
    • Deegan started the second stage from the ninth spot. 50 laps into the race, Deegan was in the 13th position when the caution was displayed. She remained out on the track during the caution and restarted 11th with six laps to go in the stage.
    • Another caution late in Stage 2 found Deegan in 11th and she visited pit road for service to her F-150. She closed out the stage just outside the top-10 in a one-lap shootout. Since Deegan pitted just before the break, she stayed out during the stage break.
    • The rookie driver started the final stage from the ninth position. With 50 laps to go in the race, Deegan was 13th. She made a scheduled green-flag pit stop on lap 104 from the 14th position. Unfortunately, the caution came out during the pit sequence which trapped her one lap down. After a lengthy caution for cleanup and with 10 laps to go, Deegan restarted in the 13th position where she ultimately finished.
    • Deegan’s 13th-place finish at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway ties her previous best finish of 13th earlier this year at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Ford Performance F-150

    Start: 25th
    Finish: 22nd

    • The starting lineup was determined by owner’s points as qualifying was rained out. Gray started in the 25th position.
    • Gray was in 20th after the opening three laps and began to methodically pick more trucks off as the stage ran. He finished Stage 1 in 15th and relayed to the team that he needed more rear stability.
    • The No. 15 team pitted for four tires, fuel, air pressure and trackbar adjustments and would restart Stage 2 in 13th.
    • Gray was in 17th on lap 50 when he got loose attempting to pass for position and spun his Ford Performance F-150. He had to come down pit road for four new tires and to check for any damage and went one lap down. He ultimately finished Stage 2 in 25th.
    • Green flag waved with 68 laps to go in the race and Gray rode steady in 24th trying to maintain position as the first truck one lap down and hoping for a caution. Caution waved on lap 118 for a wreck, but due to the cycling of green flag pit stops the No. 15 was still trapped one lap down.
    • Gray pitted under yellow for tires and fuel and restarted 22nd with 10 laps remaining and finished the race there.

Next event: SpeedyCash.com 220 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, Texas on June 12 at 1 p.m. ET.

    • Fans can buy tickets to Saturday’s Alsco Uniforms 300 or Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 by visiting www.charlottemotorspeedway.com/

CONCORD, N.C. (May 28, 2021) – A dominant Stage 3 and a flawless final restart powered John Hunter Nemechek to the ninth win of his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series career in Friday’s North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Nemechek led 71 of 134 laps and held off Carson Hocevar over the final 10 circuits to score his first Truck Series win at Charlotte and Kyle Busch Motorsports’ seventh.

Ben Rhodes finished third, with Stewart Friesen fourth and Todd Gilliland fifth. Chandler Smith was sixth with Ty Majeski seventh, Derek Kraus eighth, Austin Hill ninth and Zane Smith 10th.

Nemechek’s victory earned the second-generation NASCAR winner a $50,000 bonus for Charlotte’s leg of the Triple Truck Challenge. It also marked Toyota’s fourth win in the last six Charlotte races.

Sheldon Creed controlled Stage 1 and appeared poised to challenge for the win before an accident ended his race with 79 laps to go. Smith won Stage 2.

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK, No. 4 Mobil 1 Toyota (Race Winner): “We started the day hitting the fence in the third lap of practice and we had to fix our truck. Overall, the team did an awesome job repairing it. … We had a dominant truck, I feel like. I’m just proud to be able to drive these Kyle Busch Motorsports trucks. Overall, a solid victory. It’s nice to get our third win. I’m just thankful for all my guys and blessed to be part of this organization.”

CARSON HOCEVAR, No. 42 Scott’s/GM Parts Now Chevrolet (Runner-Up): “We’re starting to hit our strides at the right time. It’s getting close to crunch time – close to Playoff time. It’s just about me not making those rookie mistakes, those crucial mistakes, and ironing out things. This stuff is hard. You don’t expect to run that good, especially as good as we did at Darlington and now at Charlotte. We’re starting to hit it again. It’s just about inching forward, not taking big swings.”

An action-packed weekend of racing continues Saturday with Xfinity Series qualifying and the Alsco Uniforms 300 Fueled by LongHorn, Cup Series qualifying and the ARCA Menards Series General Tire 150. Sunday will mark the 62nd running of the Coca-Cola 600.

    TOYOTA QUOTES

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK, No. 4 Mobil 1 Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 1st

Started with damage on your track in practice, and you came back and won tonight.
“You (Regan Smith) came and saw me earlier, and I told you we had a fast truck. I think we only ran 10 laps in practice, so hats off to all my guys. Eric Phillips (crew chief), all of my guys that work on this thing, everyone at KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports), the chassis shop, the fab shop, just everyone and all of their effort. Mobil 1, TRD, Toyota, Kyle (Busch, team owner) for this opportunity. Just so thankful, so blessed to be in this spot. How about this crowd? It’s awesome to have all of you back.”

With the Triple Truck Challenge, you get an extra 50k in your pocket.

“I honestly forgot about that. Thank you to Womply, Camping World, Marcus Lemonis, everyone that makes this series happen. It’s one of the greatest series – the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Awesome. Aspen (daughter) is asleep at home, but Taylor (wife) is here, so hopefully we can have some fun tonight and celebrate.”

What does it mean to overcome the practice incident and make it to victory lane?

“I completed two laps and wrecked on lap three. Huge shoutout to all my guys – Eric Phillips (crew chief) and all our guys here and back at the shop. The pit crew pretty much won the race tonight I feel like on pit road. We were able to jump some guys there after the first stage. It was so hard to pass. It was amazing. Eric did a great job making adjustments all night and I was telling him what we needed. This was our baby truck, this one has won three races for me this year and sadly it’s going to have to get fixed with that crazy crash. Just huge shoutout to everyone that made this possible – Kyle (Busch, team owner), thank you for the opportunity. Jack (Irving, TRD), Tyler (Gibbs, TRD), David Wilson (president, TRD) and everyone at Toyota and TRD for all their help, Mobil 1 as well. My wife’s here so we’re going to celebrate. Sadly, baby is back home sleeping, but she will have a trophy in the morning.”

Did you notice any difference in the handling after sustaining the damage from the accident?

“That might be a speed secret, I don’t know.”

How important is it to recover with this win after the 12th place run last weekend?

“We’re #Here4Wins and we’ve been using that hashtag since I announced I was coming to KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) last year and it’s a dominant team, dominant truck every single week. We’re going to have weeks where we’re off and we’ll struggle, but we’ll keep getting through it. I didn’t lose confidence in Eric (Phillips, crew chief) and he didn’t lose confidence in me. It’s just one bad race. You have to move on from it and look, we’re in victory lane here.”

STEWART FRIESEN, No. 52 Halmar International Toyota Tundra, Halmar Friesen Racing

    Finishing Position: 4th

    What made a difference tonight?

“Jon (Leonard, crew chief) made a good call to short pit that one stage and just got some good track position. We had a good Tundra. Thanks to Halmar. Thanks to all of our veterans and all of our military that gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can come out here and race trucks and modifieds on Memorial Weekend all over the country. I’m proud of my Canadian Roots, but I’m proud to call USA my home. Thanks to all of these guys. We needed a good night to get some momentum. We just were free all night. Nothing we did tightened us up where we could run with them, but proud of my guys.”

BEN RHODES, No. 99 Bombardier Toyota Tundra, ThorSport Racing

    Finishing Position: 5th

How would you evaluate your race tonight?

“Feels like a win for us to be honest. Practice was really, really rough. I think we were 19th on the speed sheets and we threw everything we had at it after practice. This was a brand new truck coming into the race with no qualifying. Couldn’t be more proud of our Bombardier Tundra ThorSport team. They have done a fantastic job and our pit stops were on fire all night. Really, really proud of their effort and as my crew chief said, this is what we have to do to make ourselves contenders for this championship. Just super proud. I want to throw an apology out there to the 26 (Tyler Ankrum) too. I have to go see him. Everybody was checking up for the second stage right at the start-finish line and I had nowhere to go. I think he knew that too and he was trying to not hit somebody and I couldn’t slow down quick enough. Overall, good race for us.”

CHANDLER SMITH, No. 18 Safelite Auto Glass Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 6th

    How was your race?

“Our mindset going into tonight was that we were just going to be patient and work our way through the field. We knew that we were going to have a good Safelite Auto Glass Toyota Tundra. We just needed to pick and choose our battles and we would get there eventually. The 13 (Johnny Sauter) and I got into it on a restart. Ended up taking a good bit of our sideforce away on the right rear quarterpanel, so we had to fix that because it was almost undrivable. Then when we fixed that, we made the call to get a little track position. Then once we got a little track position, we started picking our way through the field and captured a P-6 finish.”

TY MAJESKI, No. 66 Simcraft Toyota Tundra, ThorSport Racing

    Finishing Position: 7th

    How was your race tonight?

“I didn’t know what to expect. This is a fifth effort for ThorSport. Bud and all of the guys did a good job preparing this thing. When I came to engineer this truck for Paul (Menard) at CotA, this thing was basically bare bones so they worked a lot of hours to get this thing ready and they did a good job on it. Just really proud of the effort. We had that penalty after the second stage, and it definitely set us back a bit but we fought back to a top-10 finish. Thought we had top-five speed, just didn’t have track position to go with it, but overall, really good effort for everyone.”

DEREK KRAUS, No. 19 NAPA Power Premium Plus Toyota Tundra, McAnally Hilgemann Racing

    Finishing Position: 8th

How was the race for you?

“It was a really good night with my NAPA Power Premium Plus Toyota Tundra. We executed everything right. Mark and all of the guys brought a really good truck to the track so that always helps. We were able to get a lot of stage points and then we were able to run in the top-10 most of the race. It’s really tough to pass. Once that yellow came out, we were like 12th. We stalled out, but that final restart helped us out a lot and we were able to get a few more positions, so overall it was a really good night.”

  • CR7 Motorsports carries momentum to Charlotte Motor Speedway

CR7 Motorsports carries momentum to Charlotte Motor Speedway

CONCORD, N.C.: On the heels of their season-best finish of fourth last weekend at Circuit of the Americas, CR7 Motorsports heads to Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway for Friday night’s N.C. Education Lottery 200 looking to keep the team pointed in the right direction.

The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ first ever visit to Austin, Texas certainly drew attention to the state-of-the-art road course and while the Toyota Tundra 225 was soaked with rain, the team’s charge led by Grant Enfinger played into their hands.

With a methodical and steady approach, Enfinger, 36, was able to muscle his No. 9 Good Sam | Grant County Mulch Chevrolet Silverado through the field to post the team’s first top-five of the year but third overall.

Now, the team looks to showcase their speed at Charlotte, often considered hometown court for the teams and drivers.

“We are really proud of Grant’s efforts at Circuit of the Americas and glad to have him back this weekend for Charlotte,” said Codie Rohrbaugh, team manager and CR7 Motorsports mainstay driver.

“Having Grant, a part of the CR7 Motorsports team is a luxury and has been extremely beneficial to us as an organization. Results have shown that this year and we’re hoping to continue that pace on Friday night.”

Enfinger, a native of Fairhope, Ala. is no slouch when it comes to racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
In four previous Truck Series starts, he has delivered two top-10s and four top-12s with an average showing of 10th. Both driver and team hope they can improve on that statistic.

“Grant always has tremendous feedback, and he has certainly done his part to help make our intermediate program better,” added Rohrbaugh. “Doug (George, crew chief) and him have an executed plan of what they want to do during practice and qualifying on Friday and I think they will easily be able to deliver.”

Overall, looking at the team’s program, Rohrbaugh is satisfied with the direction of the team heading into the summer stretch.

“Whether it’s me or Grant behind the wheel, you can see that there has been progress in 2021,” he said. “We’re getting there but there’s still work to be done. We want to be competitive week in and week out. Eventually, we’d like to take our team from contenders to winners. Everyone is working hard to achieve that goal, we just have to keep ourselves focused and humble and we will get there soon.”

It’s a busy weekend at Charlotte for CR7 Motorsports. In addition to Friday night’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race, the organization will field an ARCA Menards Series entry for Saturday night’s General Tire 150 with Jason Kitzmiller behind the wheel.

Enfinger, a six-time NCWTS winner has no prior ARCA Charlotte starts, however, Rohrbaugh competed in two ARCA Menards Series races with a best finish of ninth in the 2018 edition.
CR7 Motorsports has 35 NCWTS starts to their credit with a career-best finish of third at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway (February 2020). Additionally, the team owns six other top-10 finishes including two this season at Circuit of the Americas (fourth | Grant Enfinger) in May 2021 and Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway (seventh | Grant Enfinger) in March 2021. An 11th place qualifying effort at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway (Oct. 2019) is the team’s best time trials effort to date.

With 13 races remaining, Enfinger despite missing one race is seventh in the championship driver standings, just 22 points from fifth.

CR7 Motorsports holds a respectable 19th in the championship owner standings after nine races.

In 20 career ARCA starts, Rohrbaugh has a best finish of seventh twice at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway (July 2018 and Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway (February 2019). He has qualified a career-best fourth on four different occasions, most recently at Kansas Speedway (Oct. 2018).

Marketing partnership(s) opportunities are also available for the No. 9 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, as well as the team’s ARCA Menards Series No. 97 A.L.L. Construction | Grant County Mulch Chevrolet program with driver Jason Kitzmiller for the 2021 seasons and beyond. Interested inquiries are encouraged to contact tonya@gcmulch.com or 304.257.8783.

The N.C. Education Lottery 200 (134 laps | 201 miles) is the 10th of 22 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races on the 2021 schedule. Practice begins on Fri., May 28th from 11:35 a.m. – 12:25 p.m. Qualifying is set for later in the day beginning at 5:35 p.m. The field will take the green flag a short time later after 8:30 p.m. ET with live coverage on FOX Sports 1, the Motor Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM Satellite Radio NASCAR Channel 90. Spencer Davis ready for redemption in Charlotte return

CONCORD, N.C.: Set to make his fifth NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) start of the season in Friday night’s N.C. Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, Spencer Davis is seeking redemption.

Last year, Davis had hopes to shine with his family-owned Spencer Davis Motorsports (SDM) team, but a transmission issue hindered the team’s performance and left them with a disappointing 40th place finish.

Fast forward 12 months later, Davis believes his team is in a much better place and ready to deliver in one of the most anticipated races of the 2021 NCWTS season.

“Charlotte is such a huge race for a variety of reasons,” said Davis. “Everyone wants to go there and do well because it’s the centerpiece race of the Truck Series schedule – but it’s also a chance to shine in the backyard of so many teams, including ours.

“The place is extremely fast, but I enjoy the speed. The track has numerous characteristics as well which can make it a driver’s race track. Thankfully, we have practice and qualifying before the race on Friday night, so we have an opportunity to dial in our No. 11 INOX Supreme Lubricants Toyota Tundra.”

Davis sat on the sidelines last weekend for the series’ most recent race at Circuit of the Americas while road course racing standout Camden Murphy took the driving controls. Despite a soaked race day which included qualifying and racing on wet weather tires, Murphy contended for a top-10 finish but was spun late.

He recovered to finish a modest 19th. While not quite a top-10, Davis was more than satisfied with Murphy’s performance.

“Camden did everything we asked him off and then some,” added Davis. “The conditions were not ideal last weekend at Circuit of the Americas, but as a team, we charged through the challenges and we have some much-welcomed momentum to carry us to Charlotte after our Darlington hiccup.”

Inching closer towards the second half of the 2021 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season, Davis says his Mooresville, N.C.-based team continues to make huge strides and expects the family-owned organization to rise up during the upcoming stretch.

“We’ve put a lot of emphasis on our Charlotte truck – not only because it’s such a huge race, but it is a place where it can give us a lot of notes for some of the upcoming races on the schedule, including Texas Motor Speedway. Our goal is a top-15 or better on Friday night and I hope we can deliver.”

In February, SDM announced that INOX Supreme Lubricants will serve as the team’s primary partner this season.

INOX product range was first released in 1989 with the Original INOX MX3 Lubricant. The original MX3 product was in development stages for two years prior to release with testing and focus on creating the right product for the market.

The INOX product range continues to grow with 12 products on the market, each with their own many specialized qualities used in all different industries. All their products are tested and trialed before hitting the market to ensure the best of quality is maintained in the INOX name. INOX products are available at all major industrial, electrical, automotive, hardware, bearing and mining, marine, fishing and tackle outlets, plus many more locations.

A wholly owned Australian company Candan Industries is now exporting to over 25 countries including United States of America, Canada, France, South Africa, New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia.

“Excited to have a long-time friendship turn into a season-long partnership with INOX Supreme Lubricants,” said Davis. “I can’t thank Angel and James at INOX enough for their continued support and partnership with our small team.

“We use their products day to day on our race team and in our machines at our business. A quality product and amazing people helped bring this all together.”

Entering Charlotte, Davis, 22, has 27 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts to his credit with a career-best finish of seventh at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in Feb. 2018, with additional top-10s at Texas Motor Speedway (June 2018) and Kentucky Speedway (July 2019).

The Pete Store Rolls with Gilliland Into Charlotte

The team is fifth in the championship standings.

Gilliland spoke yesterday on the Ford Performance Teleconference. Below is the transcript:

HOW HAVE THESE LAST COUPLE OF DAY BEEN AFTER WINNING ON SATURDAY? “They’ve been awesome. Really, just soaking it all in. Last year I made the playoffs and that was a huge high, but just being locked in this early is really cool and from here on out we can just go race. That’s what I’m most excited about. I’m gonna scratch and claw for each and every single point, but just very relieving and also very exciting.”

WHAT’S THE ATMOSPHERE LIKE AROUND FRONT ROW WITH A WIN IN THE TRUCK AND CUP SERIES ALREADY THIS YEAR? “It’s really good. I wasn’t here much past last year, but the attitude is way better in here. Just when you have success it’s that much easier to get up every day and come back in here and do it all over, especially the Cup guys. They do it 36 weeks a year and it just gets repetitive, but once you have just a little glimmer of hope here and there, even though we’re not them, hopefully we can keep them wanting to come back here and put in their best every single day.”

DOES HAVING THE WIN ALLOW YOU TO EXPERIMENT AT ALL AND YOU’RE NOT RACING AS MUCH AFTER THESE NEXT FEW WEEKS, SO HOW MUCH MORE TIME DOES THAT GIVE YOU TO WORK ON THINGS? “I think it’s huge, especially with no practice. We’re actually getting spoiler because two or three of our next few races have practice, so that might not be as big of an advantage, but hopefully once we get past this and we’re just back to racing every single week, we can experiment on some stuff — maybe looking forward to a track that might be similar in the playoffs. I think you hear a lot of people say that, but it really is a big advantage I’m feeling right now, being able to try stuff and really not having that exaggerated amount of pressure come the cutoff line of the regular season.”

HOW WILL YOU TRY TO STAY SHARP DURING THE SUMMER LULL IN RACES FOR YOU? “I definitely think we’ll do a lot of iRacing and sim work, but we haven’t really talked about too much other racing outside of the truck series. I know just at DGR, David Gilliland Racing, there’s always racing going on, so I’m sure I’ll probably go hang out with them some weekends, but as of right now we haven’t talked about me driving anything else. Obviously, two of the Cup cars here, I’m sure I’ll just continue to watch and try and learn from those guys as much as I can.”

CAN YOU GIVE A SENSE OF WHAT IT’S LIKE TO DEAL WITH BEING A YOUNG DRIVER AND DEALING WITH THE UPS AND DOWNS OF BEING IN THIS SPORT? “That’s a huge thing and obviously I think every up-and-coming driver goes through it. I’ve definitely been through it. It seems like you win a few races and you’re on top of the world and then two or three so-so months go by and you’re just not being talked about and it’s the next guy up. I think just looking back, and even nowadays, there are so many super young guys that are being put out there as the next big thing, but even when I was younger you’re still so unproven. There’s still so much racing to go in your career. I feel like I’ve matured leaps and bounds since I came into the truck series. People were saying great things about me when I came in, but I feel like I’m 10 times better than I was back then, so I think it’s all situational. I think you’ve just got to really take the best of every opportunity, but it definitely is hard going through it. Like I said, one day you’re on top of the world and the next you’re kind of just pushed to the side, but it’s definitely all good attention and I think you just can’t let yourself get too high and too low.”

HOW DID YOU LEARN THROUGH THAT PROCESS? “I think you just have to have good people around you. For me, it’s always been my dad. He’s always been keeping me steady through most of it because I’m sure he’s been there and done that already, so I think that’s the biggest thing — just staying focused through it all. There are so many little things that people don’t pay attention to throughout a race weekend. Sometimes where it goes good and sometimes where it takes a turn for the worse, so you just have to take the best things out of it and as a driver there’s only so many things you can control throughout the whole race weekend, so you just have to look at those things more importantly and kind of eliminate the things that you can’t control. If they go bad, you obviously try and fix them, but just work on yourself the most you can. It’s definitely a team sport, so you’ve all got to work together.”

DO YOU FEEL THIS COULD OPEN THE FLOODGATES FOR MORE TRIPS TO VICTORY LANE? “Yeah, I definitely could see that happening. I think even over the last month or so, the last month-and-a-half, two months we have made our trucks a lot faster. We’ve been more in contention every week. Kansas, we were second going into turn one on a restart, got blocked, but we had a pretty good shot there at at top three. Darlington, we ran up front and won a stage at a mile-and-a-half that was not good to us last year, and then obviously going to the road course and having a really good weekend. I don’t think this was a fluke by any means, and I think that’s the biggest thing I’m trying to talk to my team about is just stay focused. We need to keep making the little steps. There’s still a ways to go on the mile-and-a-halves and the short tracks, but I think we can get there and just any momentum is always a good thing. We just have to keep them motivated and for a lot of my guys this was the first win for them, so given that little taste of victory I hope it makes them that much more motivated to do more.”

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO BE EVEN STRONGER IN THE PLAYOFFS? “I think that’s also something I’ve learned, just being in the top three series is that the seasons are long. You’ve got to be your best come the playoffs and you just can’t get impatient with any of that, just trust the process to be your best when you get there. There’s still a lot more steps we can take and I’m really hoping we can just take one step every weekend. We don’t need to make anymore big jumps — just to be our best come the playoffs.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE LITTLE VICTORIES YOU MENTIONED EARLIER? “For me, I think our first small victory came at Richmond. It was our first race where we were really competitive and ran in the top five or top 10 at least all day, and we ended up finishing fourth or sixth, I believe. But just running up there all day, that was our first race of actually being in the game. The race before that at Atlanta and Vegas we were 15th-20th and we were just out to lunch, so just being able to be in the game, being one or two changes away when you start the race, instead of maybe the whole package being wrong. From there, we’ve been more consistent every week. Like I say, Kansas was a way better mile-and-a-half for us and Darlington was another step better. A stage win is hard to get, so that was probably bigger than a small victory for us. That was a pretty big one for our team and all of those things definitely add up.”

Friday’s North Carolina Education Lottery 200 will be televised live on FS1 at 8:30 p.m. ET on FS1.
