    Mr. Smith Goes to Charlotte:

    • Chandler Smith and the No. 18 Safelite AutoGlass team make the short trek to Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway this week for the N.C. Education Lottery 200. Friday night’s race will be Smith’s first career start in any series at the 1.5-mile quad-oval. While it will be Smith’s first start at Charlotte, Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) has collected six wins in 11 races at the organization’s home track since its inaugural season in 2010. Owner-driver Kyle Busch has collected all six of those triumphs, most recently visiting victory lane in 2019. Smith has posted two top-five finishes on mile-and-a-half tracks in his young career, finishing fifth at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway in 2020. His best result this year in three starts on 1.5-mile tracks was an 11th-place finish at Kansas Speedway.
    • KBM has collected the victory at all three mile-and-a-half races in 2021, with John Hunter Nemechek winning at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway and Kyle Busch bringing home the trophy at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway and Kansas Speedway in Kansas City. KBM drivers have combined to lead 76.2% (308/404) of the total laps in the three races on 1.5-mile tracks this season.
    • Smith comes into Saturday’s race 13th in the Camping World Truck Series championship standings. He currently sits 35 points behind Johnny Sauter for the 10th and final spot in the playoffs with six races remaining in the regular season. Across nine starts this season, Smith has one top-five and two top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 18.9. He produced a season-best result of fourth at Richmond (Va.) Raceway in April. He sits second in Rookie of the Year standings, 45 points behind Carson Hocevar. Smith has earned the rookie of the race award four times this season.
    • The Toyota Racing Development driver has nine top-five, and 11 top-10 finishes across 24 career Camping World Truck Series starts, including a career-best runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway in 2019.
    • The talented teenager recorded nine wins, 10 poles and an average finish of 5.3 across 33 ARCA Menards Series starts the last three seasons. He captured the pole in his series debut at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville (Tenn.) in April of 2018 and set an ARCA Menards Series record by winning four consecutive poles to start his career. He earned his first victory at Madison (Wis.) International Speedway in just his fourth series start in June of 2018. Despite running a part-time schedule, he led the series in laps led in both 2018 and 2019.
    • Veteran crew chief Danny Stockman will call the shots for Smith and the No. 18 team this season. Stockman led the No. 51 team to four wins in his first season atop the pit box at KBM in 2020. He came to the organization with experience as a crew chief in all three national series, including a Truck Series championship with Austin Dillon in 2011 and an Xfinity Series championship with Dillon in 2013. Stockman’s Camping World Truck Series drivers have one top-five and two top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 14.7 across three starts at Charlotte. His best result was a runner-up finish with Kyle Busch in 2020. He was victorious with Dillon in the Xfinity Series race in October of 2015 and posted runner-up finishes with Dillon in October of 2013 and May of 2016.
    • Saturday’s race will be the final race of the Triple Truck Challenge presented by Womply in the Camping World Truck Series. The bonus program kicked off at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway and continued last week at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. An extra $50,000 is on the line for the winning driver Friday night.
    • Safelite AutoGlass – the nation’s largest provider of vehicle glass repair, replacement, and recalibration services – will be the primary sponsor of Smith’s Tundra this weekend at Charlotte and for 15 races total this season. Smith General Contracting and Katerra will be associate partners on the bedtop of the No. 18 Toyota for Friday’s 134-lap event.

    Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A:

How important is that 50-minute practice session Friday at Charlotte?
“It’s extremely important. When we went to COTA this past weekend, we had 50 minutes of practice. We didn’t get a lot of laps in, but every corner and every braking point at COTA that I was able to practice ended up paying off in the race. It’s my first time going to Charlotte. It’s a unique mile-and-a-half. It’s going to be a real big game changer for myself.”

How much do you lean on Kyle and John Hunter for advice going into another 1.5-mile track?
“Oh yeah, all the time. I was looking through the notes that Kyle took last year when he raced the 51 truck at Charlotte. I definitely pick both of their brains a little bit before we get there and just digest everything they say and keep it in the back of my head, especially when running thorough practice. I know we are going to be practicing in the middle of the day. It’s going to be really hot. We are going to be racing at night. Typically, it will free up at night. I will try to keep all those things in the back of my head for our Safelite AutoGlass Toyota Tundra and make sure we’re all set for the race.”

Last week, you joined a Safelite leadership call. How cool is it to represent Safelite on and off the track?
“To represent Safelite on and off the track and being a part of a big meeting like that was incredible. I’ve never been part of any meeting that’s been to that extreme. It was really cool for me to be able to sit there through the whole meeting and see how Safelite runs its company and what it talks about on a monthly basis with its leaders across the country. It’s really neat to be a part of it. I’m really grateful for our partnership.”

    Chandler Smith Career Highlights:

    • Produced three top-five and four top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 4.2 across his first four career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts in 2019. He led 55 laps and finished eighth in his Gander Trucks debut at Iowa Speedway last July and then posted top-five finishes in his final three starts, including a runner-up finish at Bristol (Tenn.) John Hunter Nemechek, Driver Q&A:

How special is it to race in front of a hometown crowd at Charlotte?

“It’s definitely a big ordeal to race in front of friends, families, all the employees here at KBM, and all of our partners that are around this area as well. Being a hometown driver and myself being from Charlotte, North Carolina, it is definitely a place that you want to win and make everybody proud. It’s a special race and racetrack. It’s Memorial Day weekend as well, so thank you to all the men and women who sacrificed your lives. I’m just proud to be an American.”

The past couple of races haven’t been what you or your team have wanted, but your worst finish was 12th. What does it say about the resiliency of your team?
“When things don’t go right and you can still finish 12th and that being your worst finish, I guess is pretty good situation I feel like. I feel like there are some other guys that have worse days than we do. To run like we have and be consistent, we knew there were weekends where we were going to be off. You can’t win every single race, but we definitely wish that we could. We have to continue to put fast trucks on the racetrack and be there at the end when it counts. It says a lot about this team. We have a never give up attitude. We want to continue to push and strive for more and continue to kind of be perfect every single weekend. Hopefully, we can continue that here at Charlotte. We’ve been good at 1.5-mile tracks this year. Hopefully, we can bring back another W.”

How excited are you to get back to racing on a 1.5-mile track?

“It’s very exciting to get back to a mile-and-a-half. I feel like our 1.5-mile and short track programs have been really good. I feel like our whole program in general has been good. We kind of missed it on one of the road courses and the dirt stuff. I feel like we can kind of throw those away now and focus on the future. We have some really good racetracks coming up as well. Some more mile-and-a-halves, short tracks and another dirt and road course race that I really enjoy, but first things first, I have to go take care of business at Charlotte.”

    The Data on Dollar:

    • Drew Dollar will make his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start behind the wheel of the No. 51 Tundra in Friday night’s 134-lap event at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway as part of an eight-race schedule with Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) in 2021. Sunbelt Rentals, the premiere rental company in North America, will serve as the primary sponsor on Dollar’s Tundra Friday and for five more races this season. In addition to Friday night’s race, the remaining six races on Dollar’s schedule in the No. 51 Tundra this season are Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth (June 12), Nashville (Tenn.) Raceway (Nov. 5).
    • Friday will be Dollar’s first-ever start in any series at Charlotte, but he logged 30 laps and posted the third fastest time of the day in an ARCA Menards Series test at the 1.5-mile quad-oval on May 11. The Georgia native will be pulling double duty this weekend, as he will pilot the No. 20 Camry for Venturini Motorsports in Saturday’s night’s ARCA Menards Series event. While Friday night will be Dollar’s first mile-and-a-half start in the Truck Series, he has recorded an average finish of 5.8 across five career starts on 1.5-mile circuits in the ARCA Menards Series, including a runner-up finish in his most recent outing at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City on May 1.
    • In his Camping World Trucks debut in February, Dollar exited Turn 4 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in the third position on the final lap before getting clipped from behind and getting swept up in a last-lap crash. Despite the incident, the 20-year-old driver brought the JBL Tundra home in the 10th position.
    • In addition to his part-time schedule with KBM in the Truck Series, Dollar is competing in a limited schedule in the ARCA Menards Series this season. Despite not being scheduled to compete in the series most recent event, the 20-year-old driver ranks sixth in the standings behind the strength of an average finish of 3.8 across his four starts this year.
    • The Toyota Racing Development driver finished fourth in the ARCA Menards Series championship standings in 2020 after recording one win, four top-five and 14 top-10 finishes across 20 starts. Dollar led 40 laps en route to his lone series victory at Talladega Superspeedway last June. He also finished inside the top 10 in both of his ARCA Menards Series starts in 2019, including a sixth-place finish in his series debut at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.
    • After nine events, the No. 51 sits second in the Camping World Truck Series owner standings, 31 tallies behind KBM’s No. 4 team. The No. 51 team leads the series with three victories, with owner-driver Kyle Busch collecting victories at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga., and Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, while Martin Truex Jr. picked up first-ever Truck Series victory at the Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway Dirt Track.

Before arriving at KBM, Lindley guided his drivers to 32 wins and four ARCA Menards Series East championships since 2013, including back-to-back titles with Sam Mayer the last two seasons. Additionally, he earned the ARCA Menards Series Sioux Chief Showdown championship with Mayer in 2020. Behind the wheel, the second-generation driver won 11 races on the Pro Cup Series from 2000 to 2006 and was crowned the series champion in 2001. Friday night will be Lindley’s first time calling a race at Charlotte.

    Drew Dollar, Driver Q&A:

What has it been like waiting to get back in a truck?
“I’ve been really excited to get back behind the wheel of the Tundra. I’ve had a lot of races in the ARCA car in the meantime, so that’s kept me sharp. I’ve had a lot of simulator time as well and a lot of time to study for the races coming up. I’m really excited to get back behind the wheel of the Tundra this weekend.”

You participated in the ARCA test at Charlotte a couple weeks ago. How did that go? How will that help you this weekend?
“The ARCA test a couple of weeks ago I feel like will be beneficial just to have already seen the track in person in the Camry. The speeds are going to be a little bit different, but I think the lines are going to be similar. Obviously, the track is the exact same, so that will be good. It will be good for me to have some notes going into the race. We have practice so that will help me get up to speed.”

How important will it be for you to have practice this weekend at Charlotte?
“Having 50 minutes of practice is going to be pretty big for me. I’ve never been in a truck before on a 1.5-mile track. Daytona is so different. Just to be able to familiarize myself with my Sunbelt Tundra and kind of figure out how to run it around a mile-and-a-half will be really beneficial for me.”

What does it mean to have Sunbelt on your Tundra this weekend?
“We’ve always had Sunbelt Rentals on the Camry in ARCA, so it’s really exciting to have them on a Tundra this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway. That’ll be really cool to see it on a truck. I look forward to having a good run with them.”

Front Row Motorsports Makes Most of Texas Trip

A Recap of the Weekend Past

The NASCAR Cup and Truck Series made their inaugural debut at Circuit of The Americas this weekend.

Todd Gilliland and the No. 38 Crosley Brands team captured the inaugural NASCAR Truck Series win.

Michael McDowell and his No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops | Outwest Express Ford Mustang earn a 7th-place finish in Sunday’s Cup Series race.

Anthony Alfredo and the No. 38 MDS trucking team finished 18th in Sunday’s Cup Series race and scored their second Top-20 finish of the season.

TODD GILLILAND. NO. 38 CROSLEY BRANDS FORD F-150. FINISHED 1.

Todd Gilliland and his No. 38 Crosley Brands Ford F-150 started Saturday’s inaugural NASCAR Truck Series race at Circuit of The Americas from the 5th position.

Gilliland would prove impressive right from the drop of the green flag as the No. 38 Crosley Brands Ford F-150 would settle inside of the Top-5 and quickly go to work on running down the leader. With 5 laps remaining in the first stage, the No. 38 had climbed into the 3rd position as Crew Chief Chris Lawson came over the radio to tell Gilliland that he was running 2 seconds per lap faster than the leader. Then, on the Final Lap, Gilliland would overtake the lead and go on to win Stage 1 (his second stage win of the season). Under caution, the No. 38 Crosley Brands Ford F-150 would pit for an air pressure adjustment, 4 tires and fuel after Gilliland noted that his truck, “lacked a bit of forward drive, but the balance is good.” Unfortunately, the No. 38 team would be hit with a questionable “over the wall too soon” penalty, which forced the No. 38 Crosley Brands Ford F-150 to restart at the rear of the field for the second stage.

In Stage 2, Gilliland would continue to impress as he made quick work of driving back through the field and would be scored in the 8th position with only a handful of laps remaining as Lawson called the No. 38 to pit road for 4 fresh rain tires and fuel before going on to take the second green-white-checkered flag from the 9th position. During the Stage 2 Caution, Gilliland told the team that he was “just lacking a bit of side bite through the high speed stuff” and would stay out after pitting just before the second Stage Break Caution.

Gilliland would restart 5th for the Final Stage of Saturday’s NASCAR Truck Series race and would strategically pick away at the trucks in front of him as he climbed into the second position with 7 laps remaining in the race. Then, 2 laps later, the No. 38 Crosley Brands Ford F-150 would regain the lead and never looked back as Gilliland would make history, becoming the first NASCAR Truck Series driver to win at Circuit of The Americas as well as earning Front Row Motorsports their first Truck Series victory.

With his win on Saturday, Gilliland locks himself into the NASCAR Truck Series Playoffs and is now scored 4th in the playoff standings.

GILLILAND ON CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS:

“We had such a great truck today. Thank you to Crosley Brands, Ford Performance, Front Row Motorsports, Speedy Cash, Speedco, The Pete Store, Frontline Enterprises, Chicago Pneumatic, Black’s Tire and everybody that has come on board. This is a huge win for us; we’ve been gaining momentum every single week and today was another big step in the right direction for our team. I’m just so proud of everyone at Front Row Motorsports.”

MICHAEL MCDOWELL. NO. 34 LOVE’S TRAVEL STOPS | OUTWEST EXPRESS FORD MUSTANG. FINISHED 7.

Michael McDowell and the No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops | Outwest Express team started Sunday’s inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at Circuit of The Americas from the 23rd position.

The race track was primarily dry during the pre-race pace laps, which prompted NASCAR to allow teams to pit for an optional tire swap as the field had put on rain tires prior to rolling onto the grid for pre-race ceremonies. During the optional pit stop, Crew Chief Drew Blickensderfer made the call for McDowell to keep his rain tires on as the weather radar showed incoming precipitation. The call proved to be the right one because rain began to fall just as the green flag dropped, to which the majority of the field would be forced to pit again and trade out their slick tires for wet ones. McDowell would quickly jump into second place before the caution flag would fly on Lap 9. McDowell would stay out during the caution and the No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops | Outwest Express Ford Mustang would lead the field back to green as the No. 34 would lead 3 laps, including McDowell’s 100th in the NASCAR Cup Series before going on to finish Stage 1 from the 2nd position.

During the first Stage Break Caution, McDowell would stay out and restarted Stage 2 from the 2nd position. The No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops | Outwest Express Ford Mustang would sustain significant left rear damage during a multi-car incident on Lap 20 after standing water on the straightaway between turns 11 and 12 created poor visibility. Under yellow, McDowell brought his race car to pit road for 4 fresh rain tires, fuel and damage repair and the No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops | Outwest Express Ford Mustang would restart from the 32nd position with 2 laps remaining in Stage 2. McDowell would gain 15 positions through the remainder of the stage as he took the second green-white-checkered flag from the 17th position. During the second Stage Break Caution, McDowell told the team that he had picked up a right rear tire rub and the would pit for 4 tires, fuel and damage repairs.

In the Final Stage of Sunday’s inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at Circuit of The Americas, Michael McDowell and his No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops | Outwest Express Ford Mustang would blaze through the field once again as the rain began to intensify and would be scored in the 7th position when NASCAR displayed the yellow flag on Lap 54 for track conditions and shortly after made the decision to call the race early as the No. 34 Love’s Travel Stops | Outwest Express Ford Mustang would take the checkered flag from the 7th position.

Sunday’s 7th-place finish earns McDowell a career-best 5 Top-10 finishes in a single season as well as a team-best for the most Top-10 finishes for the No. 34 car in a single season.

MCDOWELL ON CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS:

“The beginning of the race wasn’t too bad. We started out on kind of a damp track and then obviously rain started coming down … once the rain started really coming down it was so treacherous. Once the cars got single filed out you were OK, but as soon as you got within four or five car lengths of a car it was pretty tough to see. I’m really proud of everybody on our No. 34 team, especially Drew and our pit crew because they did a great job of repairing the damage that we collected during Stage 2 and really kept us in the fight. I’m proud to bring home another Top-10 this season and I’m thankful to Love’s Travel Stops and Outwest Express for coming on board.”

ANTHONY ALFREDO. NO. 38 MDS FORD MUSTANG. FINISHED 18.

Anthony Alfredo scored his best NASCAR Cup Series finish on a non-superspeedway during Sunday’s rain-shortened event at the Circuit of the Americas. In a wild, rain-soaked race, Alfredo kept his No. 38 MDS Ford Mustang on the track, while many others could not, and passed from his rear starting position all the way to 18th before NASCAR officials called the race early due to the track and racing conditions.

Alfredo made driving without visibility look easy on Sunday. Starting the race on slick tires, the team came down pit road in Stage 1 to switch to rain tires as track conditions worsened. The team went to the back of the field after the stop, but moved up nearly 10 spots at the end of the stage to finish 26th.

Stage 2, the rain came down heavier and Alfredo stayed out. The pit strategy moved the No. 38 team into 19th and Alfredo avoided some major wrecks in the Stage. NASCAR was forced to red flag the race to help remove standing water from the track and clean-up after a wild wreck. Alfredo reported the conditions to the team, but he also continued to stay on strategy. The team pitted for more rain tires and fuel and finished Stage 2 in 24th.

The final stage, which was cut short due to the rain, Alfredo made a brilliant drive. He raced up to 15th before having to make his final stop for fuel. A quick stop by the crew, Alfredo, who still couldn’t see at times in the pouring rain, ran great laps. He quickly made his way back inside the top-20 and up to 18th. That is when NASCAR finally called the race with the rain just too much for the track to handle.

ALFREDO ON CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS:
“It was a wet and wild day. It’s a great facility and super cool to race there. But, it was pouring rain and the restarts were insane. It was impossible to see anything. That made it unpredictable.

“I feel that I’m getting better at road racing. We finished 18th and I’m pretty happy with that, especially for never racing in the rain before. I got a lot of experience. I wish we would have finished the race because I think we could have gotten a few more spots. I want to thank all our partners and everyone on the team. I look forward to coming back to this track.”

  • GILLILAND WINS NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES TOYOTA TUNDRA 225 AT CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS

GILLILAND WINS NASCAR CAMPING WORLD TRUCK SERIES TOYOTA TUNDRA 225 AT CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS

AUSTIN, Texas (May 22, 2021) — Todd Gilliland was so fast and so determined out front in Saturday’s Toyota Tundra 225 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race his own team had to remind him to slow down and take care of his tires in the closing laps of the series debut at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) race.

Despite receiving the cautionary advice, Gilliland, 21, did not ease off and raced to a hefty 7.941-second margin of victory to earn his second career series win and first since 2019. His No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford set the fastest lap of the race with two laps remaining.

“I definitely did a lot of stuff wrong but that’s what I love about road course racing, there’s 20 turns here, 20 opportunities to pass, but also make mistakes,’’ Gilliland said, thanking his Front Row Motorsports team.

“Last year we didn’t quite have the season we knew we could and just to come out here and win early, we’ve been building momentum and for my team to get this win is just amazing.’’

Gilliland and the rest of the field ran wet tires flag-to-flag as the race began in a steady rain. As things dried out a bit, his team kept reminding him to be careful and look for wet spots on the track. He hit his marks on the 3.41-mile 20-turn circuit and he hit the puddled water just enough to carry on to the victory – leading the final six laps and earning an extra $50,000 incentive in the second race of the series’ Triple Truck Challenge.

Kaz Grala finished runner-up, followed by pole-winner Tyler Ankrum, Grant Enfinger and defending series champ Sheldon Creed, who led a race-best 14 of the 41 laps.

Seventeen year-old driver Sam Mayer, rookie Carson Hocevar, Zane Smith, Austin Hill and Ben Rhodes rounded out the top 10. Championship points leader John Hunter Nemechek finished 12th.

Gilliland actually won Stage 1 – his first stage win of 2021 – and was first out during the ensuing pit stops during that caution period. But NASCAR ruled one of his pit crew members was over the wall too soon and Gilliland was penalized – sent to the rear of the field on the restart.

With Gilliland now forced to play catch-up, Creed led most of Stage 2, pitting just before it ended and allowing Ben Rhodes to instead take his first Stage win of the year.

Creed and Ankrum battled one another up front – at one point passing each other three different times on one lap – before Gilliland – who methodically worked his way forward was able to take the lead for good with six laps remaining. Grala passed Ankrum with two laps remaining to tie his best-ever series finish.

The victory marks Gilliland’s fifth top 10 showing in the last six races and as he told his team on the victory lap, “I know we can do this [win races] a lot.’’

Gilliland becomes the fourth full-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver to win this season – joining two-race winners John Hunter Nemechek and Rhodes, and last week’s winner Creed.

Todd Gilliland earned his second career NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race by taking the checkered flag nearly eight seconds ahead of his closest challenger Saturday at the Toyota Tundra 225 at Circuit of The Americas.

Todd Gilliland (38) won the first stage and ultimately the race after overcoming an early race penalty in the Toyota Tundra 225 at Circuit of The Americas Saturday near Austin, Texas. The race started in the rain and teams used wet weather tires throughout the entire 41-lap race around the 3.41-mile, 20-turn road course.

Todd Gilliland (38) earned an extra $50,000 bonus with the Camping World Truck Series Triple Truck Challenge for winning Saturday’s Toyota Tundra 225 at Circuit of The Americas near Austin, Texas.

    Saturday, May 22
Track: Circuit of the Americas, 20-turn, 3.426-mile road course
    Race: 9 of 22
Event: Toyota Tundra 225 (42 laps, 143 miles)

Hailie Deegan, No. 1 Monster Energy Ford F-150
    Start: 28th
    Finish: 14th

    • Deegan started the road course race from the 28th spot after qualifying this morning at Circuit of the Americas. By the end of the first stage, Deegan was up to the 21st position and reported her Monster Energy F-150 was tight in the center under the rainy conditions. She pitted for fuel, four tires and adjustments to help loosen her truck up. Unfortunately, the rookie driver received a penalty for a crew member over the wall too soon and was forced to start at the rear of the field for Stage 2.
    • In the second stage on lap 22, Deegan made a scheduled green-flag pit stop from the 20th spot for fuel, four tires and adjustments. The Ford driver finished Stage 2 25th, but the most recent pit stop allowed her to not pit during the break which moved her up to the 15th position to start the final stage.
    • Early in the final stage Deegan slipped back, but as the drizzle stopped her truck came to life and she worked her way forward in the closing laps. In the last five laps, the Monster Energy driver went from 21st to 14th to close out the race.

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Ford Performance F-150
    Start: 36th
    Finish: 31st

    • Gray started in the 36th position after he was unable to make a qualifying attempt due to an engine issue.
    • On the opening lap, the Ford Performance driver gained six spots. At the end of Stage 1, Gray was in the 23rd spot. He pitted for fuel and four tires, and started the second stage from the top-25.
    • Gray made a scheduled green-flag pit stop on lap 22 from the 27th position. He closed the stage out in the 31st position and didn’t pit during the break.
    • The Ford driver started the final stage from 18th. On lap 30, Gray went for a spin after contact with another competitor. Damage from the contact forced Gray to pit for repairs and two right-side tires. The time on pit road ultimately put him one lap down.
    • The No. 15 F-150 driver closed out the race in the 31st position.

Next event: North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina on May 28 at 8:30 p.m. ET.

Gilliland overcomes early penalty to win inaugural NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at COTA

Todd Gilliland was so fast and so determined out front in Saturday’s Toyota Tundra 225 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race his own team had to remind him to slow down and take care of his tires in the closing laps of the series debut at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) race.

Despite receiving the cautionary advice, Gilliland, 21, did not ease off and raced to a hefty 7.941-second margin of victory to earn his second career series win and first since 2019. His No. 38 Front Row Motorsports Ford set the fastest lap of the race with two laps remaining.

“I definitely did a lot of stuff wrong but that’s what I love about road course racing, there’s 20 turns here, 20 opportunities to pass but also make mistakes,’’ Gilliland said, thanking his Front Row Motorsports team.

“Last year we didn’t quite have the season we knew we could and just to come out here and win early, we’ve been building momentum and for my team to get this win is just amazing.’’

Gilliland and the rest of the field ran wet tires flag-to-flag, so his team kept reminding him to be careful and look for wet spots on the track since the rain stopped mid-race. He hit his marks on the 3.41-mile 20-turn circuit and he hit the puddled water just enough to carry on to the victory – leading the final six laps and earning an extra $50,000 incentive in the second race of the series’ Triple Truck Challenge.

Kaz Grala finished runner-up, followed by pole-winner Tyler Ankrum, Grant Enfinger and Sheldon Creed, who led a race-best 14 of the 41 laps.

Seventeen year-old driver Sam Mayer, rookie Carson Hocevar, Zane Smith, Austin Hill and Ben Rhodes rounded out the Top-10.

With Gilliland now forced to play catch-up, defending series champion Sheldon Creed led most of Stage 2, pitting just before it ended and allowing Ben Rhodes to instead take his first Stage win of the year.

Creed and Ankrum battled one another up front – at one point passing each other three different times on one lap – before Gilliland – who methodically worked his way forward was able to take the lead for good with five laps remaining. Grala passed Ankrum with two laps remaining to tie his best ever series finish.

The victory marks Gilliland’s fifth Top-10 showing in the last six races and as he told his team on the victory lap, “I know we can do this [win races] a lot.’’

Gilliland becomes the fourth full-time NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver to win this season – joining two-race winners John Hunter Nemechek and Rhodes, and last week’s winner Creed.

The series races next Friday night in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway (8:30 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
