SILVERADO POWERS SHELDON CREED TO CHAMPIONSHIP VICTORY
    Wins First Truck Series Title

AVONDALE, Ariz. (November 6, 2020) – Sheldon Creed, driver of the No. 2 Chevy Accessories Silverado, claimed the 2020 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series (NGROTS) championship with a victory in the season-finale Lucas Oil 150 at Phoenix Raceway. The title is the first NGROTS career title for Creed, and second in the division for GMS Racing. It also marks Chevrolet’s 14th Driver’s Championship, and 252nd Chevy Silverado win since the inception of the series in 1995.

“Congratulations to Sheldon Creed, Jeff Stankiewicz, and the entire No. 2 Silverado team for winning the NASCAR Truck Series championship,” said Jim Campbell, U.S. Vice President of Performance and Motorsports. “Sheldon had an incredible final restart and drove to the front on four-fresh tires to bring home his first championship. What a spectacular season!”

Creed joins Johnny Sauter, who won the NGROTS championship in 2016, as the second GMS driver to win in the division.

“Also, congratulations to Maury Gallagher Jr., Spencer Gallagher and Mike Beam on earning a second NASCAR Truck Series championship,” added Campbell. “GMS Racing is recognized as one of the leading organizations in the division, and we are proud to be associated with them.”

During the 2020 NGROTS season of 23 races, the 23-year old Alpine, CA native piloted his Chevy Accessories Silverado to five victories.

“I thought my teammate was going to win the championship and we were going to run third,” Creed said as he exited his title-winning No. 2 Silverado. “We were just too loose there as we went on. The caution came out and Jeff (Stankiewicz, crew chief) and I were talking, and we had nothing to lose. The worst we’re going to run is fourth, here. Let’s put tires on it. I pride myself on my re-starts week-in and week-out, and just nailed that restart right there. They were racing really hard. I was driving as hard as I could. I want this so bad. I was just driving as hard as I could and I knew if I did, I’d have a shot. My guys and Chevy Accessories and everyone who helps us; and my grandfather is the one that makes this deal happen.”

Creed is now the eighth Team Chevy driver to record this achievement. In addition to Sauter (2016), those include: James Buescher (2012), Austin Dillon (2011) Ron Hornaday, Jr. (1996, 1998, ‘07, & ‘09), Travis Kvapil (2003), Mike Bliss (2002), Jack Sprague (1997, ’99, & ‘01), and Mike Skinner (1995).

Chevrolet returns to competition in the NASCAR Truck Series with the NextEra Energy 250 season-opener at Daytona International Speedway on Friday, February 12, 2021.

    TOYOTA QUOTES

CHANDLER SMITH, No. 51 JBL Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
    Finishing Position: 3rd

How did you get to the podium on that final restart?

“Overall, we had a really good finish in our No. 51 JBL Toyota Tundra. We just missed it on our splitter heights this weekend and ultimately it killed us, especially with how deep we started in the pack. We stayed out on that late race caution, got some track position and executed.”

CHRISTIAN ECKES, No. 18 Safelite Auto Glass Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
    Finishing Position: 4th

Solid top-five finish after a wild final restart. How was the finish from your seat?

“I chose the bottom. On those last restarts, I saw that you can make moves, go low and go really wherever you need to. That played in our favor, pretty well overall. I wish we would have been a little bit lower, maybe, we would have been in front of the 2 (Sheldon Creed). Not sure if we had the speed to beat him, but the track position definitely could have helped. Overall, pretty proud of my team. We were able to get Chandler (Smith) up there to get a top-five too, and I think all three of our Tundras were in the top-five too. It was a good day for KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports).”

RAPHAËL LESSARD, No. 4 Mobil1 Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports
    Finishing Position: 5th

It was a good day and you made some moves on that final restart to get a top-five. How was your day?

“It was pretty good. It was my first time here at Phoenix. I have never seen the track before so it was a little bit of learning at first. I think I got used to it really quick. We stayed in the top-10 most of the race. We got both sides. We were pretty good and couldn’t really make moves because it was so hard to pass, and I was still learning the racetrack. Then we got to the last stage, we got way too free. We were super loose, but we kept fighting and trying to pass people. Then the caution came out and we had the green-white-checkered. We came in and put on two right side tires, and we fired off on the last restart and we got everything we could get. We finished with a good top-five I feel like that is pretty good for my first time here. I’m just glad we got to run this year with everybody at Kyle Busch Motorsports, Toyota,TRD. It’s been an awesome year and CANAC, they’ve been a huge help for me this year. I’m just proud to have driven a full season and have a win in the Truck Series.”

STEWART FRIESEN, No. 52 Halmar ‘Racing to Beat Hunger’ Toyota Tundra, Halmar Friesen Racing
    Finishing Position: 6th

It was a really strong run all night Stewart. How was it from your seat?

“It was really good. We just made adjustments on it – had a good long run truck in the end. We decided to come down pit road on that green-white-checkered deal and put on two tires, tried to get some track position. We just got jammed up on the restart and couldn’t really use it. We ended up with a sixth. We needed to get to the bottom on (turns) one and two and kind of got jammed in the top. It is what it is. We will take it and move on. It’s a good end to the season. We made some changes the last four or five races and we really picked up some speed and really showed the potential of this team. We will take that momentum and go into next year with that. A top-10, so another $5,000 to another local food bank for the Halmar ‘Race to Beat Hunger.’ To keep that going is pretty awesome as well.”

Does Monday begin 2021 planning for you? It was an up-and-down year, but you ended the season strong.
“Yeah, just getting the right people in the right places. 2021 starts Monday. The guys in the shop have a good gameplan on how to spend the next couple months getting prepared and we know the areas we need to work on and approve on. It was a big building year for us. We look forward to being in contention for the championship next year.”

    16th — Dylan Lupton

    FORD PERFORMANCE QUOTES

GRANT ENFINGER, No. 98 Champion Power Equipment/Curb Records Ford F-150 — TAKE US THROUGH THE FINAL RESTART? “Before that Hensley made a good call to just get off sequence. We just couldn’t go on a short run. We had good speed on a long run, but just couldn’t pass after that. So we got off sequence. That worked. Hensley was leaning towards tires at the end. I was leaning against it just to do something different, and we ended up staying out. That cost us. It just is what it is. We didn’t have quite the short run speed to legitimately contend tonight, but, man, a great season by these guys. I’m gonna try not to be too sad leaving here because it’s been a great year. It’s just unfortunate the way it turned out tonight.”

YOU WERE ON THE FRONT ROW FOR THE FINAL RESTART, BUT ON OLDER TIRES. WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE? “Tires, like you said. Hensley made a good call earlier on in that deal to get off sequence because we just couldn’t fire off. We had good long run speed, but once we’d cycle five laps or so we were a lot better than those guys, but it was really hard to pass. So we got off sequence and that worked. Then at the end those guys took tires and we didn’t. I was voting to stay out and Hensley was kind of voting to come in and I talked him into staying out and that cost us a shot. Anyway, we’ll try not to hold our head too low leaving here. It’s been a great year. I’m proud of these guys, it just didn’t work out tonight.”

“Robby did a great job in our most recent race at Talladega Superspeedway in October. We were fast and competitive but had an issue late in the race that kept us from a better finish. We have an opportunity to end the season on a high note and that’s exactly what we plan to do.”

Phoenix is home of Lyon’s Truck Series debut in 2017 where he finished 12th after starting 20th. And although the Seminole, Fla. native hasn’t competed on the new configuration, he is hopeful that his prior experience will pay dividends in the 33-truck field.

“Bruce Cook and the entire Diversified Motorsports Enterprises crew have put together an incredible truck in preparation for this weekend’s race at Phoenix,” said Lyons. “I had an awesome experience in my first Truck Series race there three years ago, but the track has changed since then.

“It’s going to be a little tougher to get used to that with no practice or qualifying, but we have 150 laps to learn (it) and execute. With the new configuration, the start | finish line will be one of the biggest challenges on the start and restarts because of the design, as well as the pit road layout.

“I’m confident in my team though and that we can overcome the challenges and deliver a good finish for Logan (Puckett) and the entire DME team.”

Knowing that 2020 hasn’t gone exactly to their plan, Puckett says he is proud of his team for overcoming adversity and making it to the track, especially with the uncertainty because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“Without Bruce (Cook), Jesse (Little), Robby (Lyons) and all the team members of this DME team, 2020 wouldn’t have happened and I appreciate their hard work and dedication despite some forks in the road,” added Puckett.

“No, we haven’t had the finishes we hoped for, but it hasn’t been for a lack of effort and we’ve learned a lot that will help us move into 2021.

“Robby has established himself as a well respected and talented driver. Both he and Bruce have experience at Phoenix and that should prove to be beneficial. Because of the formula, we’re going to be starting deep in the field, but Robby is a smart racer and he’ll make the moves when it counts most.

“If we can leave Phoenix with a top-15 finish, I’d be ecstatic.”

In 16 prior NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series starts, Lyons has delivered five top-20 finishes, including a top-20 finish earlier this year at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway in June. He has been running at the finish of 14 of the 16 races.

Phoenix marks the sixth NGROTS start of 2020 for the popular driver.

    Chatter About Chandler:

Chandler Smith and the No. 51 JBL team head to Phoenix Raceway for the final event of the 2020 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. The reigning owner’s champions were knocked out of this year’s playoffs last weekend at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway after finishing 52 points behind the cutoff line for advancing from the Round of 8 to the Championship 4. Friday’s race will mark this first time since the 2012 season that KBM doesn’t have a driver or team mathematically alive for a championship entering the final race of the season.

The Toyota Racing Development driver ran inside the top five for the majority of last year’s Truck Series event at Phoenix making his way from firth to third on the final restart with 44 laps remaining and maintaining that position when the field took the checkered flag. Smith was victorious in the ARCA Menards Series race at Phoenix in March, taking the lead from fellow Toyota competitor Ty Gibbs on an overtime restart and then finished 0.303 seconds ahead of teammate Michael Self.

Smith has compiled 37 laps led, four top-five and four top-10 finishes across his 11 Truck Series starts this season. He saw a four-race top-five streak end in his last race at Texas Motor Speedway in Ft. Worth after contact from another competitor sent him into the wall in the Final Stage and relegated him to a 21st-place finish. The 18-year-old racing prodigy finished a season-best third in his first-ever superspeedway race Oct. 3 at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway and has finished fifth at Kansas Speedway, Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway. The 18-yeaar-old’s average finish over the last six Truck Series events this year is 8.5 compared to an average finish of 25.2 across his first five starts this season.

In addition to his limited Truck Series schedule this year, the Toyota Racing Development prodigy competed in his third season of part-time action in the ARCA Menards Series. He finished the ARCA season with two wins, two poles, 332 laps led, eight top-five and 10 top-10 finishes resulting in an average finish of 6.4. Across 32 career ARCA Menards Series starts, Smith has collected nine wins, 10 poles, 1761 laps led, 22 top-five and 29 top-10 finishes en route to an average finish of 5.2.

Wes Ward, who has served as shop foreman at KBM since 2015, will serve as the interim crew chief for the No. 51 team this week while Danny Stockman serves his suspension for the wheel that fell off two races ago at Texas Motor Speedway in Ft. Worth. Ward is a veteran crew chief with more than 300 Xfinity Series races on his resume, as well as 28 Gander Trucks races. He has been atop the pit box for three victories at KBM, two with Kyle Busch and one with Todd Gilliland. Ward’s drivers have compiled an average finish of 18.8 across four Truck Series starts at Phoenix, including a 14th-place finish with Gilliland last year.

The No. 51 team is tied for the lead in the Truck Series with four wins, three with owner-driver Kyle Busch and one with Brandon Jones. The team also leads the series in fastest lap run (280) and ranks second in laps led (393).

Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) has five victories at the Arizona track. KBM’s five victories at the Arizona track have come with four different drivers. Kyle Busch won in 2011, Brian Scott in 2012, Erik Jones went back-to-back in 2013-2014 and Daniel Suarez claimed the top spot in 2016. A KBM driver led the most laps in the Phoenix race every year from 2011 to 2018. Busch (2011, 107), Scott (2012, 43), Jones (2013, 84), Jones (2014, 114), Jones (2015, 106), William Byron (2016, 112), Christopher Bell (2017, 90) and Harrison Burton (2018, 46). The streak narrowly came to an end last year when Brandon Jones led 36 laps but was narrowly eclipsed by Ben Rhodes (47) and Stewart Friesen (44).

    Chandler Smith, Driver Q&A

It’s the final race of the year. How would you assess your season?

“It’s the final race of the year. It’s been a great year. It has been a big learning curve especially for me learning my team, learning Danny (Stockman, crew chief) and getting experience on 1.5-mile tracks. I’m definitely hoping we can get back together for next year, but we will see how it works out.”

Phoenix is a unique track. You had a top-five there in trucks last year and won an ARCA race earlier this year. Do you like the track? How crazy are the restarts after the start-finish line?

“I have one win at Phoenix in the ARCA division. I’m pretty sure I finished third there in trucks last year. I’m not quite sure. Phoenix is definitely unique. The restarts are fun. It’s really wide and then gets really narrow in Turn 1. The dogleg always dices things up. It’s a fun racetrack. It’s fun to race on. It’s definitely a dustbowl.”

Now that the season is over, what’s the one thing on the top of your to do list?

“My biggest thing that I want to do in the offseason is relax. I just want to kick back and take it easy because I don’t get to do that much.”
