Buschwhacked: Cup Series star Kyle Busch wins SpeedyCash.com 250 Truck Series Thriller

    • Kyle Busch holds off Corey Heim to tie the TMS record for NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series wins at six.
    • RCR’s Jesse Love earns Xfinity Series pole position for Saturday’s Andy’s Frozen Custard 300.

FORT WORTH, Texas (April 12, 2024) – Kyle Busch held off a hard-charging Corey Heim following a late-race restart to win Friday night’s SpeedyCash.com 250 and earn a share of the Texas Motor Speedway record for NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series career victories.

Busch, driving in his fourth NCTS race of the season for Spire Motorsports, led 112 of the 167 laps to earn his sixth career victory at TMS and tie the record held by Todd Bodine. The feat is even more impressive given the fact that Busch was making just his fourth start at TMS in the past decade – all of which resulted in victories (2014, ’19 and ’20).

“I just got lucky the schedule changed,” said Busch regarding his limited opportunities to compete at Texas in recent years. “It was at the time of the year when Cup wasn’t here or it was in the Playoffs and I wasn’t able to do it. Fortunate to have Texas come on the schedule when I could run it. … Real cool to do that and thankful for the opportunity with Spire and everybody at Team Chevy and thanks to (car sponsor) Realtree as well for the support they give us.”

The victory in the No. 7 Chevrolet Silverado was Busch’s second of the season and 66th of his career in the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series. Heim of TRICON Garage finished second, .112 of a second behind Busch, and pole sitter Nick Sanchez of Rev Racing finished third.

It appeared that Busch was going to coast to victory, but his pursuers had other ideas as two restarts in the final 17 laps opened the door. He owned the lead on Lap 149 of 167 before a three-truck accident in Turn 2 brought out the caution and Busch relinquished the lead to Eckes.

The seventh and final caution came out two laps later for a four-truck incident in Turn 3 with Eckes maintaining the lead with 10 to go. Eckes held off Busch on the restart before a side-by-side battle ensued and the two-time Cup Series champion regained the lead a lap later.

Then it was Heim’s time to take a shot at Busch and the win. Heim closed to Busch’s rear bumper with four to go and made a last-gasp run on the final lap as he closed to .13 of a second. Busch, however, was able to thwart the challenge and hang on for the win.

Prior to the late-race drama, the only time Busch wasn’t the most dominant truck was in the opening 40-lap stage where Sanchez and Eckes battled for the lead. Eckes led 21 laps and Sanchez 16 before Busch stepped in to lead the final three and win the stage.

Busch never relinquished the lead in Stage 2, winning the segment in dominant fashion by leading all 40 laps. Sanchez was second while Eckes took third. Heim and Taylor Gray got in the mix, taking the fourth and fifth stage positions, respectively.

Busch would go on to lead 112 of the final 130 laps.

In NASCAR Xfinity Series action, Jesse Love of Richard Childress Racing

won the pole position for Saturday’s Andy’s Frozen Custard 300 (12:30 p.m., TV: FS1, Radio: PRN, SiriusXM Radio).

The Xfinity Series rookie continued to impress in qualifying as the 19-year-old Californian collected his third pole in just eight career races. The others came at the first two of the season, with Love winning the pole at Daytona and then Atlanta.

Love posted a lap of 29.093 (185.612 mph) on the 1.5-mile oval to edge defending Xfinity Series champion Cole Custer of Stewart-Haas Racing by .022 of a second. It will be the third consecutive top-five start at Texas Motor Speedway for Custer, who has never qualified outside the top 10 in eight career starts.

Qualifying was tight among the top six as the group was separated by just .061 of a second. Tanner Gray of Joe Gibbs Racing, in his third Xfinity Series race, recorded a season-best qualifying effort of third. JGR driver Chandler Smith, first in the series standings along with two wins, qualified fourth and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Riley Herbst rounded out the top five.

In addition to the Andy’s Frozen Custard 300, Saturday’s on-track activities will include the opening practice session and qualifying for the NASCAR Cup Series. Practice begins at 9:30 a.m. and will be immediately followed by pole qualifying for the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at 10:15 a.m.

Tickets are still available for the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400 at four price points, beginning at $115. TOYOTA QUOTES

COREY HEIM, No. 11 Safelite Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, TRICON Garage

    Finishing Position: 2nd

What would have it taken for you to get by him?

“Just more experience I think. He does such a great job aero blocking. I had a couple runs, here and there. It was pretty single lane tonight. You could make a run in the second groove on older tires, but with all of the throttle time we had – wide open – it was hard to make a lane change and gain momentum. Track position was the biggest thing, but he did a great job too. You can’t take anything away from him – he’s one of the greatest of all time. Just huge thank you to TRICON Garage, Toyota Racing, Safelite for all they do. We were solid tonight. I think we were probably a fifth-place truck. I admittedly struggle here a lot, so to finish second is pretty good. I will take it. Obviously, you want to win, but not a bad day for us.”

Can you tell me about that three-wide move there on the next-to-last restart?

“Just going for it. I knew track position was going to be it with it being single groove, sometimes double groove on the restarts. Being in front of Kyle (Busch) was going to be the main thing. I did everything I could. I was a little overagressive in the beginning and knocked a hole in the nose, so probably just need to pick my battles better, I guess.”

What more could you have done to catch Kyle Busch?

“It just seemed like a big track position game at the end there. Of course, you can get really big runs down the straightaways, but once you got to the corners it is really hard to stay behind somebody and keep momentum. I just was doing all I could there – trying to take him three-wide on the next-to-last restart and then got the caution. I was just trying to build a run on him, but he is just too good. He does a really good job. I’m really happy with our run tonight in our Safelite Tundra. We got stage points and finished second. I feel like we were probably a fifth-place truck, and I admittedly struggle here a little bit at this race track, so to finish second here is a good day for us and we will build on it to get better.”

TAYLOR GRAY, No. 17 JBL Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, TRICON Garage

    Finishing Position: 7th

You continued your top-10 streak with another top-10 finish. Can you talk about your race?

“I can’t thank all of my TRICON guys enough. They gave me a really good JBL Tundra TRD Pro. The cautions at the end – we didn’t need those. It was just another cycle on the tires. It got us continously tighter and we ended up bleeding spots on that last restart. Good points day. We move on and go to Kansas.”

TANNER GRAY, No. 15 Operation 300 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, TRICON Garage

    Finishing Position: 8th

If we would have told you a few hours ago that you would finish eighth tonight, what would you have said to that?

“Honestly, before the race started, I felt really good about our chances. I knew that we would have a fast Tundra. We’ve raced this truck before and ran well with it. I would have honestly felt confident. Wrecking in practice is a terrible way to start the day – just caused these guys a lot of extra work, but once we got into the race, we were awful. I don’t know – we have something wrong in the front. We struggled with the handling. It was extremely bad – pretty much the entire race. Jerame (Donley, crew chief) did a good job throwing a hail mary there and catching the caution at the right time. We got ourselves some track position and then we just came in and tightened up a ton and took a swing at it and was able to manufacture a finish. Really proud of everyone from TRICON – it’s nice to come out of here with a good finish, but I’m still frustrated at myself for putting us in a hole in practice. I feel like if I hadn’t done that, we might be in better shape yet, but definitely needed a good finish. Nice to manufacture one when you have a start like that, but proud of everyone from TRICON, can’t thank everyone at Toyota, Operation 300 and Dead On Tools enough for the support.”

Faction46 to Celebrate Petty 75th During Darlington Throwback Weekend

Thad Moffitt to Race STP/Bobby Hamilton Scheme

SALISBURY, N.C. (April 12, 2024) – Faction46 will use the present to celebrate the past. The team today announced its Darlington Throwback Weekend paint scheme with an unveil of the No. 46 Chevrolet Silverado that pays tribute to Bobby Hamilton and the STP 25th Anniversary scheme that Hamilton debuted in 1996 while racing the famed No. 43 at Petty Enterprises.

Thad Moffitt, the grandson of Richard Petty and the rookie driver for Faction46, will race the No. 46 Chevrolet Silverado during the NASCAR Throwback weekend at Darlington which will begin with the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series on Friday, May 10.

The unveiling is part of the Petty 75th Anniversary.

“This is a really special scheme and one that I’m proud to race and represent the history and the legacy of Bobby Hamilton with my family,” said Moffitt. “After my grandfather (“The King” Richard Petty), it was Bobby who took the STP 43 back to victory lane in 1996. That was a celebration of STP’s 25 years with Petty Enterprises, and it ties in perfectly with the Petty 75th Anniversary. It is really cool that we can do this, and I want to thank everyone for allowing us to celebrate this occasion. It is going to bring back a lot of memories for a lot of NASCAR fans.”

Hamilton won twice in the No. 43 STP car for Petty Enterprises and eventually became a legend in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series where he won 10 times and a championship. Hamilton became family to the Petty’s and will now be celebrated again by Faction46.

“We are proud to carry the same colors that Bobby Hamilton raced with the Petty family and help celebrate the Petty 75th Anniversary,” said Faction46 Owner, Lane Moore. “It was Bobby who made the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series as great as it is today. We all know he was a great guy, an unbelievable driver, but he was one of the drivers who built and grew the truck series and its popularity. We are looking forward to seeing this great scheme on the track and pay tribute to Bobby and the Petty 75th Anniversary.”

Fans will also be able to get into the action as the Petty 75th Anniversary truck will be offered as Moffitt’s first diecast with the Faction46 team. Pre-orders will be available exclusively by visiting www.dailydownforce.com. In addition, fans can also visit the site to purchase an exclusive shirt, a signed hero card, and even the opportunity to have your name on the decklid of the truck during the throwback weekend.

“We really wanted to make sure that this truck could be offered as a diecast and also give fans so much more to be a part of NASCAR’s Throwback weekend,” said Moffitt. “It’s a special part of history and it’s the perfect way for Faction46 to debut its first diecast to all our fans and allows them to get a complete package of one-of-a-kind memorabilia.”

The new Faction46 team can be found online at www.faction46.com and on social media on Twitter (@TeamFaction46), Instagram (@TeamFaction46), TikTok (@TeamFaction46), and on Facebook and YouTube.

    Kyle Busch Quotes
How cool is it for you to be carrying Realtree’s iconic camouflage design?
“Realtree has partnered with some of the most iconic names in NASCAR over a very proud history in the sport, so I’m honored that Bill and Tyler Jordan have chosen me to be the latest driver to carry Realtree’s iconic camouflage design on the race track. We’ll head to Texas hunting another Truck Series victory with our No. 7 Silverado and, at the same time, we’ll raise awareness for Turkey’s for Tomorrow with a really cool paint scheme guaranteed to stand out on the track.”
Do you enjoy racing in the Truck Series at Texas?
“The fast mile-and-a-half tracks like Texas, Charlotte and Las Vegas are ones that I’ve really enjoyed racing in the Truck Series, and I’ve had a lot of success at, so I’m looking forward to Friday night. When we were putting together my five-race schedule this offseason, it was definitely high on my list of races that I wanted to do and I’m glad that it worked out and we were able to get Realtree to come onboard for it. If you look back at last year’s race, Nick (Sanchez) dominated the race and Chase (Purdy) and Jack (Wood), had a lot of speed as well, so I think that we should have a really fast Realtree Silverado Friday night. Texas has one of the coolest Victory Lane celebrations on the circuit and that camouflage and neon green scheme would look really good parked in there.”

Rajah Caruth – Driver, No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado

    • Rajah Caruth will pilot Spire Motorsports’ No. 71 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevrolet Silverado in Friday night’s SpeedyCash.com 250 at Texas Motor Speedway.

    • With his first career NCTS win and pole position earlier this season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Caruth became the third African American driver, alongside NASCAR Hall of Famer, Wendell Scott and current NASCAR Cup Series regular Bubba Wallace, to win a NASCAR National Touring Series race.
    • Caruth is currently seventh in the NCTS championship point standings after six races. He has logged one pole, one win, five top-10’s and six top-15 finishes. He’s recorded a 11.0 average start, a 7.0 average finish and completed 100 percent of the laps contested this season.
    • Caruth started racing professionally online for the first time in the eNASCAR Ignite Series. He finished 20th in points. Caruth still races with iRacing for recreation.
    • Rajah Caruth Quotes

How are you feeling about Texas this week?
“I feel similar to how I did going into Vegas. I know that tracks like these are not only a strength for our program but also myself in terms of my driving style with the higher speed on mile-and-a-half race tracks. I’ve only been to Texas once though, whereas Vegas I’d been to four or five times before, but I do feel pretty dang good going into the race this weekend.”
What is it about mile-and-a-half tracks that make them your favorite?
“They just come more natural to me. The short tracks have been something I’ve had to work towards just because I don’t think I’m as good as I need to be, yet. Whereas, mile-and-a-half tracks, I feel like I’m further along in my progression. So, for my driving style and kind of track I enjoy, it is more of my bread and butter at the moment.”

Chase Purdy – Driver, No.77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado

    • Chase Purdy will Pilot Spire Motorsports’ No.77 Bama Buggies Chevrolet Silverado in Friday night’s SpeedyCash.com 250.

    • Last Friday at Martinsville Speedway, Purdy started 11th and finished with a season-best third-place finish. Purdy jumped from 20th to 16th in the NCTS championship point standings.
    • The SpeedyCash.com 250 will mark Purdy’s 82nd career NCTS start and seventh behind the wheel of Spire Motorsports’ No.77 Bama Buggies Chevy Silverado.
    • Purdy’s crew chief Jason Trinchere has five starts in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at TMS with Kaulig Racing. In Trinchere’s five starts, he has called three top 10s, including back-to-back sixth-place finishes in 2021 with A.J. Allmendinger.

    Chase Purdy Quotes
How do you run well at Texas?
“Honestly, the better you can qualify, the better you are. It’s a very aero dependent track and depending on whether they put any track compound down, it can really make or break your day. I think just making sure you have a good qualifying lap, don’t make any mistakes or beat yourself on pit road. You need to maximize as much as you can on the restart and you should be pretty good.”
How much confidence does last week’s run at Martinsville give you?
“Certainly, running well will give you confidence to run well anywhere, but we’re going to try and take that momentum that we had in Martinsville and bring it into Texas. We’re happy with finishing up front but the job’s still not done. We want to win races and lock ourselves in the playoffs so that’s what we’re focused on. Hopefully, everything goes according to plan.”
What can you take from last year’s great day at Texas and apply it to this one?
“That’s a good track for me, and I think after watching film, there’s already a bunch of things that I would do differently to help us run better and be better, myself. I just think that minimizing mistakes and learning from what I did wrong last year can make all the difference.”

SALISBURY, N.C. (April 10, 2024) — Faction46 has signed its newest partner to its growing NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series program, and it is a familiar one to Thad Moffitt and his Petty family roots. Johnny Sauter on Friday’s Race at Texas Motor Speedway: “I’m excited to be back with Phil Gould and this Niece Motorsports team,” said Sauter. “We had such a fast truck in Daytona, so I’m looking forward to getting back on track in our Karl Chevrolet Silverado. I really enjoy racing at Texas – we’re going to do everything we can to get this Chevrolet in Victory Lane for Al Niece and the whole Niece Motorsports organization.”

By The Numbers: Friday’s race marks Sauter’s 27th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start at Texas Motor Speedway. In his previous 26 starts, he has earned five wins, four poles, and 11 top-five finishes. In addition, the Wisconsin native has 17 top-10 finishes and has led 371 laps at the 1.5-mile track. Sauter also has four NASCAR Cup Series starts and eight NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at the Texas track.

On the Truck: Sauter’s No. 45 Chevrolet Silverado will race with support from Karl Chevrolet, TXAPA, Easton Sales & Rentals, and MG Machinery.

Recapping the Last Race: Kaden Honeycutt and the No. 45 team showed speed in Friday afternoon’s lone practice session, putting up the 10th quickest lap of the session. Honeycutt qualified 17th in the No. 45 Chevy Accessories Silverado for his third NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start of the season. Although passing at the Virginia short track was tough, Honeycutt worked his way through traffic, earning stage points in both stage one and stage two. Late in the race, Honeycutt was involved in a spin, which left him mired in the pack. Honeycutt worked his way through the field again, ending the night in ninth-place.

Kaden Honeycutt on Last Race at Martinsville Speedway: “Ninth-place tonight in our No. 45 Chevy Accessories Silverado, in a wild, chaotic race. Our truck was great all night scoring stage points in both stages. Then, making our way through the field, I made a mistake on the 43 after I saw it and spun. Thank you, Niece Motorsports, for a fast truck.”
