  • FIRST TIME IN HISTORY: NASCAR’S THREE TOP-TIER SERIES, ARCA TO COMPETE ON DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY’S ICONIC ROAD COURSE, AUGUST 14-16, 2020

FIRST TIME IN HISTORY: NASCAR’S THREE TOP-TIER SERIES, ARCA TO COMPETE ON DAYTONA INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY’S ICONIC ROAD COURSE, AUGUST 14-16, 2020

Three-Day Weekend includes Sunday Doubleheader with NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Trucks Series on Iconic 3.56-mile, 12-Turn, High-Banked Trioval/Infield Road Course

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 7, 2020) –  NASCAR was already set to return to Daytona International Speedway in late August, but now the iconic venue is set to host a double dose of two exciting NASCAR weekends during the month, one with unprecedented twists, literally.

NASCAR announced today that, in addition to the scheduled August 28-29 doubleheader weekend featuring the Coke Zero Sugar 400 and the Wawa 250 Powered by Coca-Cola, for the first time in history, Daytona International Speedway’s world famous 3.56-mile road course will play host to NASCAR’s three top national series, along with the ARCA Menards Series, on August 14-16.

Three events to be held on Daytona’s 12-turn, high-banked tri-oval/infield road course, are realigned races that were originally scheduled to be held at Watkins Glen International on August 14-16 – the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series race and ARCA Menards Series. In addition, the fourth race – a NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series event is realigned from Iowa Speedway that was originally set for June 12.

The new scheduled August 14-16 weekend for Daytona International Speedway’s road course includes:

    ·         Friday, August 14 – ARCA Menards Series at 5:00 p.m. ET (MAVTV); Distance TBD

    ·         Saturday, August 15 – NASCAR Xfinity Series at 3:00 p.m. ET (NBCSN); 182 miles (51 laps)

    ·         Sunday, August 16 – NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors at 12 Noon ET (FS1): 153 miles (43 laps)

    ·         Sunday, August 16 – NASCAR Cup Series at 3:00 p.m. ET (NBC): 231 miles (65 laps)

The historic races will be held on the same road course as the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA, North America’s premier race for sports cars. Road-course racing has always been an anticipated, vital component of the makeup of the speedway, with the Rolex 24 first held in 1962 as a three-hour race called the Daytona Continental. The DAYTONA 200 for motorcycles was moved off the old Daytona Beach-Road Course to the speedway in 1961, and the majority of today’s course is used for the DAYTONA 200. The ribbon of asphalt was used in action this past weekend with the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s IMSA WeatherTech 240 At DAYTONA.

In March, it was announced that the 2021 Busch Clash At DAYTONA would move to the speedway’s 3.56-mile road course and be held under the lights on Tuesday, Feb. 9. Now, however, the August 14-16 weekend will be on the pole for the track’s first NASCAR road course weekend for NASCAR’s premier series and others.

“Daytona International Speedway has a storied history like no other in motorsports,” said Speedway President Chip Wile. “The sport of NASCAR gets to add a surprise chapter of road course racing to the venue’s legacy. Throughout the years, we have had many memorable moments with sports cars and motorcycles, but now NASCAR will take center stage on the road course at the World Center of Racing.”

Complete details on the road-course weekend, including fan attendance, is currently being finalized and will be announced in the near future.

Competition on the road course will be unlike any other challenge drivers have faced at Daytona International Speedway. In contrast to the tightly packed competition on the speedway’s famed 2.5-mile high-banked trioval, drivers will utilize approximately three-quarters of the tri-oval along with the challenging infield portion of the road course. That translates into 12 turns instead of the usual four. That challenge entails the high-speed entrance into Turn 1, as drivers dive left off the front straight to begin the twists and turns the infield offers, including the International (east) and west Horseshoe turns and the tricky negotiation of the backstretch chicane prior to a climb back atop the bank in Turn 3.

While this will be the first attempt of NASCAR’s three top-tier series on the heralded road course, it won’t be the first time NASCAR vehicles have been on the coveted layout. In the late 1960s, in smaller, stock-type cars, the NASCAR Grand Touring Division competed on the road course while the NASCAR Grand American cars were a constant in the early ‘70s, as well as the NASCAR Modifieds in the mid to latter part of the decade. Noted names of winners in those divisions included stars like Pete Hamilton, Buck Baker, Jim Paschal, Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip. The International Race of Champions (IROC) actually had its first race at Daytona in 1974 on the road course, with Mark Donohue winning in a Porsche (the next year moving to a Chevrolet Camaro and the oval).

Current NASCAR drivers who have competed in the Rolex 24 on the 3.56-mile road course include Kyle Busch, who was a participant earlier this year, and his brother Kurt, who was part of the event in 2005 and 2008, when he wound up third-place overall. Two-time DAYTONA 500 champion Jimmie Johnson, a seven-time starter in the Rolex 24, has two runnerup finishes in the event, in 2005 and 2008. Other former NASCAR drivers who had success in the Rolex 24 At DAYTONA include AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Jamie McMurray, Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Mark Martin, Bill Elliott and Juan Pablo Montoya.

In addition to the dates for Daytona’s Road Course, NASCAR also announced the next installment of the 2020 schedules through the end of August. The Coke Zero Sugar 400 (Aug. 29) will mark the final time drivers have a chance to secure their position in the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs while the Wawa 250 Powered by Coca-Cola will see the NASCAR’s future stars tackle the 2.5-mile trioval.

Fans can stay connected with Daytona International Speedway on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, PinterestYouTube and Snapchat, and by downloading Daytona International Speedway’s mobile app, for the latest Speedway news throughout the season.

Though the season-opening NASCAR Cup Series event garners most of the attention – as well as the largest audience in motorsports – the approximately 500-acre motorsports complex, also known as the “World Center of Racing,” boasts the most diverse schedule of racing on the globe. In addition to at least nine major event weekends, the Speedway grounds are also used extensively for events that include concerts, civic and social gatherings, car shows, photo shoots, production vehicle testing and police motorcycle training.

Todd Gilliland – NGROTS Advance: Kentucky Speedway

    Track: Kentucky Speedway, 1.5-mile oval
    Race: 7 of 23
Event: Buckle Up In Your Truck 225
    (225 miles, 150 laps)

    Schedule:
    Saturday, July 11
    6:00 p.m…..……Race (FS1)
    (all times ET)

Todd Gilliland, No. 38 Speedco Ford F-150

Todd Gilliland is ready to get back behind the wheel of his No. 38 Speedco Ford F-150 Saturday evening at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta. Coming off a successful month of racing in June, he’s hoping to pick up where he left off in July. In the three NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series races in June, Gilliland earned two top-five and three top-10 finishes. That momentum vaulted him up to fifth in the driver point standings.

He has two previous starts at the intermediate track. He finished seventh in 2018 and last year was running well, finishing third in the first stage of the race. In the second stage he began to lose power and after the race determined a spark plug wire had come loose, leaving him in 17th place, five laps off the pace.

The Front Row Motorsports team will be taking the same Ford F-150 it raced at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway two weeks ago. Gilliland finished fourth in that race and hopes to improve on that at Kentucky.

Speedco, part of the Love’s family of companies, will be back on Gilliland’s No. 38 Ford F-150 at Kentucky. Love’s provides professional truck drivers and motorists with 24-hour access to clean and safe places to purchase gasoline, diesel fuel, fresh coffee, restaurant offerings and more. Love’s has more than 380 truck service centers, which include on-site and stand-alone Speedco and Love’s Truck Care locations. Love’s and Speedco combined is the largest oil change, preventive maintenance and total truck care nationwide network. Love’s is committed to providing customers with “Clean Places, Friendly Faces” at every stop. To learn more, visit loves.com.

The No. 38 Speedco Ford F-150 will compete in the 150-lap Buckle Up in Your Truck 225 on Saturday, July 11, at 6:00 p.m., ET. A live broadcast of the race will be shown on FS1. Stage breaks will be on laps 35 and 70.

    Quick Facts:
Number of Starts at Kentucky: 2
    Best Start: 2nd (2018)
    Best Finish: 7th (2018)
    2020 Driver Point Standings: 5th

Gilliland on Kentucky: “I love racing at Kentucky. It’s a really nice race track. We were running really well there last year and had a spark plug wire come off. I’m hoping to back up some of the momentum we have gained the last few races this year and just keep continuing to click off good finishes. I feel like our Front Row Motorsports (FRM) team is in a really good place right now and we just keep getting better every week. Since DGR-Crosley got its first truck win at Kentucky last year, it would cool if I could get FRM’s first truck win there this weekend.”

  • Tanner Gray – NGROTS Advance: Kentucky Speedway

Tanner Gray – NGROTS Advance: Kentucky Speedway

    Track: Kentucky Speedway, 1.5-mile oval
    Race: 7 of 23
Event: Buckle Up In Your Truck 225
    (225 miles, 150 laps)

    Schedule:
    Saturday, July 11
    6:00 p.m…..……..Race (FS1)
    (all times ET)

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Ford Performance F-150

Tanner Gray will be pulling double duty on Saturday at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta. Gray will compete in both the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series (NGROTS) race that evening, and also the ARCA Menards Series race earlier that afternoon. He has no previous starts at Kentucky an any series, so the extra seat time will be a benefit for the rookie.

Gray has five starts in the NGROTS on mile-and-a-half tracks. His best finish came earlier this season at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway when he crossed the finish line eighth. His DGR-Crosley team is taking the same No. 17 Ford Performance F-150 which Gray raced in Vegas, as well as at Atlanta and Charlotte this year.

DGR-Crosley is the defending winner in the NGROTS at Kentucky. Tyler Ankrum took the checkered flag in 2019 for the team’s first and only Truck Series victory to date.

The Buckle Up in Your Truck 225 from Kentucky Speedway will be run on Saturday, July 11. The race will go green at 6:00 p.m., ET, with a live broadcast on FS1. The 150-lap race will be broken into three segments with stage-ending cautions on laps 35 and 70.

Gray on Kentucky: “I have big shoes to fill since DGR-Crosley won this race last year. Hopefully running the ARCA race earlier in the day will help me learn about the track. Without any truck practice or qualifying, my chances as a rookie to get the feel of the track are zero until the race starts. Hopefully the ARCA race will give me an advantage when the truck race starts. If we can unload close to what we need that would be great so we don’t have to spend the first part of the race getting the truck where we need it to be. We’ve had some struggles lately, but hopefully after a weekend off we can reset and put all that behind us.”

    TOYOTA QUOTES

BRANDON JONES, No. 51 DuPont Air Filtration/Menards Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 1st

Talk about the battle with your teammate and with Sheldon Creed in the closing laps.

“First off, everyone that makes this possible for me to come and play in this Truck Series – when I first started racing in my life, I saw the 51 late model and said I wanted to race with Kyle Busch Motorsports one day and win races. We finally did it. We’ve been close in the past. Menards was on our Tundra, Dupont and those guys do so much for us in our sport. That was a heck of a battle and I know it was fun to watch on TV. It was really fun for me there. Got a heck of a push there from the 38 (Todd Gilliland), that was really fun. All in all, great day and I’m pretty pumped. Got another one too so maybe we can get it done.”

What is the pressure like from Kyle Busch knowing the expectation is to get in this truck and win?

“It’s not really that much pressure honestly. I think there’s so much that he (Kyle Busch) provides for us. We were all on a call with him last night after the Cup race and he gave us so much information that led to this in today. It’s a group effort and I can’t do it by myself, I have to have all that stuff to tie the pieces in.”

How concerned were you in the closing laps and could you have caught Eckes had he not wrecked?

“Christian (Eckes), he was better in the tunnel (turn) than me I think. My one and my three were just lights out different so I was working so hard to get clean air, that’s kind of what I felt I was struggling with, I just needed some clean air on my nose to be good through the tunnel. That was the thing holding me back, but I was getting big runs. He was getting out in front of me from that and then I would really run up to him. Misfortunate that happened to him. Would have been fun to race for the win with a teammate, but at the end it was just a game of cat and mouse to see whose going to lift first down in turn one. The 38 (Todd Gilliland) gave us a heck of a push. We were talking to him there a little bit before that restart trying to get him to push better. I think he had the rear tires lifted off the ground coming to the restart zone so he did his job there and got me out front. Then me and the 16 (Austin Hill), we were just playing, who was going to lift first and we both drove down in the corner pretty deep. The outside just had so much more momentum all day long. The PJ1 was definitely a different way to race this race track. There were a lot of differennces for me coming here this time with running up through that middle lane. I always do good when we have the PJ1, same thing that was at Phoenix when we won the Xfinity race. I was happy to see that they added that.”

What does it mean to win in the Truck Series?

“This is big. That was the only thing I was missing and now that everything I’ve raced in, I’ve got at least one win in. Pretty big, really is. It means so much for me. When I was 13 years old racing in short tracks, the 51 was at the race track every week in super late models and I knew one day that was what I wanted to be doing was racing with Kyle Busch and now I’m here winning races with him.”

What were the restarts like from your vantage point?

“They were a little different. With the compound up there, definitely played a big change with the way we attacked our restarts. You really wanted to be on that top lane, it didn’t really matter what position you were in, you really needed that momentum up there. The trucks don’t have the power or the RPM to get you out of that hole so you really have to just carry as much momentum as possible and the top lane just had the momentum and it’s where you needed to be. A few times I would get the top going good on the restart and then I would bail on it trying to protect and play defense when I shouldn’t have been, it was hurting me a little bit. I got off that and just stayed committed to that top line at least for that first lap until I got cleared.”

How much confidence do you have going into the Xfinity race?

“This is big for me. There are going to be a lot of differences here today. There’s going to be differences in lines and things like that. I don’t think you’ll see as many caution flags as you saw today, but this definitely helps. I know now what the PJ1 does, at least to the tire. I know kind of where you want to start and where you want to be ending. All of that stuff is a big help. I expect our Xfinity car to be really fast so I’m looking forward to seeing how different it is when we jump in the Xfinity car here in a little bit.”

AUSTIN HILL, No. 16 Toyota Tsusho Toyota Tundra, Hattori Racing Enterprises

    Finishing Position: 2nd

What was the battle like at the end of the race?

“Our Toyota Tsusho Tundra was really fast today. We stayed up front all day. Clean air was really big. During that run that we finally had, we had so many caution laps that during that first pit stop I didn’t really know exactly what to tell the guys I needed. I knew I was on the tight side so I said hey if anything, let’s loosen it up some. We just didn’t free it up enough, we should have taken a big swing at it because once we had that little bit of a long run there when we were running third, it just got way too tight. Clicked off a few good laps there early in the race when I actually started catching the 51 (Brandon Jones) and the 18 (Christian Eckes) a little bit and then all of the sudden it was just like a light switch and it got really tight on us. That’s kind of what the difference was, that last restart, got a really good push and got through (turn) one good and was battling with the 51 and the 2 (Sheldon Creed) got to the middle of us. When I went through the tunnel turn, I was just way too tight. Just could not get it turning and I had to lift to stay off the 2 to keep from wrecking all of us. It’s frustrating finishing second, but I guess when you’re frustrated finishing second then the wins will come. It just shows that my guys are the best in the garage and they know what they’re doing and they’re really good at dialing these trucks in with no practice.”

What is the consistency showing with this team this season?

“Just that everybody at HRE (Hattori Racing Enterprises), they’re just really good ta making these trucks unload really good and really fast. Without practice and I’ve said it before, I wasn’t worried at all when everybody told me that we were going to this different format and we were just going straight to racing. I actually thought that we had a little bit of an edge on the rest of the field because every time we unloaded at certain race tracks, we’re just fast right off the bat. Our Toyota Tundra was really fast today. We just fought tight really all day long. Early in that run, stage one and two, we didn’t have enough green flag laps to really feel out exactly what the truck was doing. I think if we could have had a little longer of a run, I could have maybe been a little more vocal to Scott (Zipadelli, crew chief) and everybody on how tight the truck actually was. We made a small adjustment and it fired off pretty good and then that long run that we had, it just showed that our truck was just too tight and there at the end with the green-white-checkered, we were just too tight. It was hard for us to make any moves being that tight. I would get on the bottom of somebody and I had to lift. We’re just showing consistency right now and these consistent runs will turn into wins here soon, I hope. It’s frustrating when you finish second and know that you should be in victory lane by now at this part of the season. We just have to keep digging and have to go back to the drawing board and be just a little better to go win these races.”

Do you think you could have gotten past the 51 if the 2 hadn’t shot up the middle of you both?

“I think it would have been really hard, but I think it would have made my entry into the tunnel turn a loot better. I didn’t really have a good angle going into the tunnel turn being on the bottom of three-wide. I didn’t have the right arc and angle being that tight going through there and essentially just had to lift a little bit and that’s kind of what the difference maker was. As soon as I lifted, they were just able to drive back by me. The 51 (Brandon Jones) was just really good at being able to get his truck turning in the center and being able to get back to throttle and stay in the throttle. We fought really all day, we would get down in there and when it would get to the center, it would just get tight and would never go away until we got back to the straightaway. I just had to wait on the truck too long. I don’t know of really much difference I could have done today with the circumstances and how everything happened. I didn’t want to be put middle of three-wide, just because of how our truck was handling and being on the tight side. I just didn’t want to be put in that predicament and slide up into the 51 or something like that. Everybody at Toyota and TRD, they work their tails off each and every week, we’re just showing that we’re consistent right now. The wins will come. I feel like we should have won by now and we had a shot at winning today, just didn’t play out our way. If we could have restarted from the first posiiton there instead of second, it could have possibly been a different outcome, but who knows.”

STEWART FRIESEN, No. 52 Halmar “Racing to Beat Hunger” Toyota Tundra, Halmar Friesen Racing

    Finishing Position: 8th

Top-10 all day, just a solid run. Talk about the finish today at Pocono.

“It was good. When we got clear of the 99 (Ben Rhodes) and got to fifth with five to go, I’m like it needs to go green to the end. Restarting at the bottom was not the advantage today, and sure enough we get a caution there. It was good. We are building. We had a balanced Tundra today. Thanks to Halmar. It was cool to do the Race to Beat Hunger. Three races in what turned out to be 36 hours – have a third, fourth and a eighth. It’s pretty cool. Another top 10; five grand towards local food banks here. Just a good deal.”

DEREK KRAUS, No. 19 NAPA Autocare Toyota Tundra, McAnally-Hilgemann Racing

    Finishing Position: 10th

You ran great all day, and you were the top finishing rookie with a top 10 run.

“Yeah, it was definitely different. This track is definitely tough. I’ve never been here – never seen the place – until we got on the racetrack. Then, we didn’t get a lot of green flag laps. We were pretty good. We were running the top 10 a lot; we just had a good run. The guys at MHR had a good NAPA Autocare Toyota Tundra and I’m just happy with how the day ended.”

How difficult is it for you as a rookie to have your first laps at a track be when the green flag waves?

“Yeah, it’s definitely different. It’s challenging. There’s a lot of things I got to learn throughout the race. I just watch film in there as much as I can before I get to the racetrack and just adapt to it throughout the race.”

CHRISTIAN ECKES, No. 18 Safelite Auto Glass Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 33rd

He was leading when he had the tire issue. How do you describe that issue – leading and have a tire problem?

“Yeah, it sucks for sure. Probably done by me. We had a little contact on pit road – it might have created a rub or something. I don’t know. They said everything was clear, but who knows. We had a really fast Safelite Toyota Tundra; we could just never get track position. We finally got there at the end and blew a tire, so I guess we will go to Kentucky.”

RAPHAEL LESSARD, No. 4 SiriusXM Toyota Tundra, Kyle Busch Motorsports

    Finishing Position: 37th

After your best finish of the season at the last race, this one ends early. What did you see?

“Well, I tried to go on the inside of the 24 (Chase Purdy). He was kind of slow and just, he kind of plugged me a little bit and then I just kind of fenced it. I’m not sure what happened. I think I got hooked on the right rear. It is what it is. It’s part of it (replay shown on screen) – oh I hit the grass. That’s what happened. Well, it sucks. My mistake. You got to learn from it. Just got to thank everyone at Kyle Busch Motorsports, Toyota, SiriusXM and Canac. It’s not what we wanted. We just have to move on and focus on the next one.”
