Codie Rohrbaugh, CR7 Motorsports prepared to step up short track game at Martinsville Speedway

MARTINSVILLE, Va.: NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) rookie Codie Rohrbaugh and his CR7 Motorsports team head to their penultimate race of the season prepared to step up their short track game in Saturday afternoon’s NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 at the famed Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

Make no mistake about it, Rohrbaugh and his Doug George-led team have certainly showcased a lot of speed in their No. 9 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet – including a career-best qualifying effort of 11th in their recent outing at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

However, with just two races left on their docket, the Mooresville, N.C.-based team is ready to let their speed also to transition in their results as they aim for their first career top-10 in the penultimate short track race of the year.

“I’m so proud of this CR7 Motorsports team,” said Rohrbaugh. “It’s a shame we were caught up in someone else’s mess at Talladega – but our team showcased a lot of speed from practice to qualifying and throughout the race.

“I’m confident that we can continue to showcase that same speed in our trucks and look forward to doing that on Saturday at Martinsville.”

The Petersburg, West Virginia native will attempt to make his NASCAR debut at the tight
0.555-mile paperclip oval. After missing the race in the spring, Rohrbaugh and his team went back to work identifying their weak points and prepared to step up to the challenges in the highly contested fall challenges.

“We’ve been through leaps and bounds this year,” offered Rohrbaugh. “But even with the disappointments, there are positives to everything. We’re a better team because of the hiccups we faced throughout the season. The energy and leadership from Doug (George, crew chief) have made me a better drive and the guidance from my spotter Tim (Fedewa) has allowed me to enhance my craft.

“Martinsville is a tough short track – but I cut my teeth in the Pro Cup and NASCAR K&N Pro Series East on the short tracks and I hope I can apply some of those skills during Saturday afternoon’s race.”
“Martinsville is what we’re focused on this week, but we’re already looking ahead too. Homestead should be a good race for us and I’m already getting excited about 2020 – especially how well we ran on a superspeedway at Talladega.

“We’ll use Martinsville this week to gather as many notes as we can to continue to make steady gains in all aspects of our race team that we hope can be beneficial not only for Homestead but next year too. I want to get better as a driver and the best way to do that is to be on the track racing competitively and finishing races.

“Martinsville seems to be a lot about track position. It’s going to be a crowded field with not a lot of for error. I can’t wait to embrace that. We need track position to be on our side and make sure we’re managing our tires too. If we can keep up with that, we should be a good shape near the end of the race.”

CR7 Motorsports has nine NGOTS starts to their credit with a career-best finish of 14th at Kentucky Speedway (July 2019). An 11th place qualifying effort at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway (Oct. 2019) is the team’s best time trials effort to date.

In 20 career ARCA starts, Rohrbaugh has a best finish of seventh twice at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway (July 2018 and Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway (February 2019). He has qualified a career-best fourth on four different occasions most recently at Kansas Speedway (Oct. 2018).

Marketing partnership(s) opportunities are available for the No. 7 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet and No. 9 Grant County Mulch Chevrolet for the 2019 ARCA Menards Series and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series seasons and beyond. Interested inquiries are encouraged to contact at tonya@gcmulch.com or 304.257.8783.

Following Martinsville, CR7 Motorsports plans to return to the Gander Truck Series scene at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway for the Gander Trucks season-finale Ford EcoBoost 200 on Fri., Nov. 15, 2019.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 (200 laps | 105.2 miles) is the 21st of 23 races on the 2019 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series schedule. Practice begins on Fri., Oct. 25 from 12:05 p.m. – 12:55 p.m. A final practice has been etched in from 2:05 p.m. – 2:55 p.m. Qualifying is set for race day, Sat., Oct. 26 beginning at 10:05 a.m. The 32-truck field will take the green flag shortly after 1:30 p.m. with live coverage on FOX Sports 1 (FS1), the Motor Racing Network (Radio) and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Satellite Radio, Channel 90). All times are local (Eastern).

    Quote:

“We salvaged a solid top-five finish here in the spring, and starting from the pole gave me a lot of confidence at a track that had been kind of hot and cold for me previously. We just have to be smart and run our race. Martinsville is very aggressive track and it’s tough to find that balance between when to push and when to hold back. We’re in an okay spot in the playoff standings, but that cushion we could disappear with one or two bad stages. I hate racing for points, but Trip (Bruce, crew chief) loves it so I’ll rely on him to keep me focused on the big picture throughout the race.”

    Quote:

“We didn’t have the race we were hoping for when we ran here in the spring, we got caught back in traffic and could never quite rebound. I’m looking forward to improving on that this weekend. This team has been been improving every single week and has been putting together solid runs the last few weeks. It’ll be a true test of what we’re capable of to go to a track that we didn’t perform our best earlier in the season and do everything to be successful. I think a top 10 would be great for a track as tough as Martinsville, a grandfather clock would be even better.”

Sam Mayer, No. 21 Manpower U.S. Chevrolet Silverado

    Martinsville Stats
    – Mayer has no prior starts at Martinsville, but did test a truck at the track this summer.

    2019 NGOTS Stats

    Notes:

    – Mayer was able to test his No. 21 ManpowerGroup Chevrolet at Martinsville this summer and get a feel for the paper-clip shaped oval.
    – Mayer will race chassis No. 116 at Martinsville. This Silverado was part of Justin Haley’s fleet in 2018.
    – Mardy Lindley will again be Mayer’s crew chief for the truck race. The duo recently claimed the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East championship.
    – The No. 21 Silverado will feature a pink scheme in honor of breast cancer awareness. Special pink ribbons on the truck honor those close to GMS employees that are breast cancer survivors, fighters and those no longer with us.
    – Manpower U.S. will sponsor Mayer in his three NGOTS starts this season. ManpowerGroup(R), the parent company of Manpower and headquartered in Milwaukee, Wis., is the leading global workforce solutions company which helps organizations transform in a fast-changing world of work by sourcing, assessing, developing and managing talent that enables them to succeed.

    Quote:

“I’m really excited for Martinsville this weekend. I feel like GMS will bring a great Silverado for me to run and all I want to do is learn, have fun and have a solid finish. I can’t thank Manpower enough for all they do with being on the truck this year, and hopefully we can get them a solid finish since they will have guests here from their Lynchburg, Va., office.”

    – Moffitt’s Silverado sports a special pink paint scheme in honor of breast cancer awareness. Special pink ribbons on the truck honor those close to GMS employees that are breast cancer survivors, fighters and those no longer with us.

    Quote:

“Martinsville is a tough place to race and win because the racing is so physical and aggressive. I think that’s part of why I like competing there. We had a solid top-five finish there in the spring, it would be great to improve on that with a win on Saturday. We’re in a pretty good position in the playoffs right now, but I would be a lot more comfortable with a win to officially punch our ticket to the Championship 4 in Miami.”

Tanner Gray, No. 15 Gray Motorsports / Toyota Tundra

Reigning NHRA Pro-Stock Series Champion Tanner Gray will make his NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series debut this weekend at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. Gray will drive the No. 15 Gray Motorsports/ Valvoline Toyota Tundra for DGR-Crosley.

Gray enters Martinsville Speedway fresh off his rookie campaign in the K&N Pro Series East. In combined results between his 15 K&N Pro Series East and West starts, Gray collected one win, nine top-five finishes, and twelve top-10 finishes. The rookie also collected three Pole awards throughout the season in route to a third place finish in the point standings. The 20-year-old rookie also competed in eight ARCA Menards Series races this season for DGR-Crosley, most recently coming off a sixth place finish at Kansas Speedway.

The No. 15 team will be led by Crew Chief Seth Smith from atop the pit box. Veteran Cup Series spotter Eddie D’Hondt will be Gray’s eye in the sky. The 200 lap NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 will be broadcast live on FS1 beginning at 1:30 p.m., ET on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Gray on Martinsville: “I’m excited to make the step up to the Truck Series. I think it’s going to be challenging, but I’m ready to take the next step with my DGR-Crosley guys. We’ve been preparing for this all season, and I think the best way to learn is to go out and do it. Between testing and spending time in the Toyota simulator, I think I have a good feel for Martinsville and will be able to adapt quickly. We will have three practice sessions to get acclimated and get the truck where it needs to be. We just need to keep our nose clean in the race and have a solid day on pit road.”

Tyler Ankrum, No. 17 B/X Custom Designs Toyota Tundra

After a thrilling come back at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, Tyler Ankrum and his No. 17 Factory Canopy Toyota Tundra team will continue their pursuit of a championship as the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series makes a stop at the half-mile of Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

The NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 will mark Ankrum’s third career start at the 0.5-mile paper clip. Ankrum made his Truck Series debut at Martinsville Speedway for DGR-Crosley in 2018, where he finished in the 18th position. The 18-year-old Sunoco Rookie of the Year competed at Martinsville Speedway for his first race of the 2019 campaign and went on to finish in the 19th position. Ankrum will enter race two of the round of six only one point below the cut line.

The No. 17 team will be led by veteran crew chief Kevin ‘Bono’ Manion from atop the pit box and Doug Campbell from the spotter stand. The 200 lap NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 will be broadcast live on FS1 beginning at 1:30 p.m., ET on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Ankrum on Martinsville: “Martinsville historically has been my worse track. It goes against everything that you learn short track racing. But with that said, I have a lot of confidence going into the weekend. My team and I have been working really hard to prepare for this race. We’ve spent a couple of days in the Toyota Simulators as well as watching a lot of film. We know that we need a solid race to advance in the Playoffs. If we can make it through this weekend, our chances are really good because Phoenix and Homestead are two tracks that really fit our style.”

Natalie Decker, No. 54 N29 Technologies Toyota Tundra

Natalie Decker will make her Martinsville (Va.) Speedway debut in the No. 54 N29 Technologies Toyota Tundra. The NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 will mark Decker’s 17th NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series start with DGR-Crosley this season.

The 0.5-mile paperclip of Martinsville Speedway will be a different test for Decker. The Eagle River, Wisc. native made her first short track appearance in the Truck Series earlier this year at Bristol Motor Speedway. She went on to finish in the 25th position after getting caught up in a late-race incident. In four career starts at speedways less than 1.5-miles, Decker has an average starting position of 21st and an average finish of 22nd. The No. 54 team tested at Martinsville earlier this season in preparation for Saturday’s event where Decker posted the fasted lap times of all DGR-Crosley trucks participating. Despite her lack of short track experience in the Truck Series, Decker is optimistic for her Martinsville Speedway debut.

The No. 54 team will be led by veteran crew chief Frank Kerr atop the pit box and Coleman Pressley from the spotter stand. The 200 lap NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 will be broadcast live on FS1 beginning at 1:30 p.m., ET on Saturday, Oct. 26.

Decker on Martinsville: “I can’t wait to race at Martinsville with my DGR-Crosley truck this weekend. I love short track racing because that’s what I grew up doing. I was not able to make the first Martinsville race this season because I was trying out for the W series, so I’m excited I am able to compete there for the first time.”

  • Boyd Turns Talladega Win into Sponsorship Gold with ORORO ® Heated Apparel

Boyd Turns Talladega Win into Sponsorship Gold with ORORO ® Heated Apparel

Concord, NC (October 21, 2019) – Fresh off the first win of his NASCAR career, Spencer Boyd is proud to announce a new partnership with ORORO ® Heated Apparel. ORORO’s mission is to empower everyone to never again let the weather dictate their outfits with quality and affordable heated apparel.

“It was a crazy week,” reflects Boyd. “There were a lot of media appearances and just as many sponsorship calls. One of those calls was with Mark from ORORO and we were able to put a primary sponsorship at Martinsville together. With fall finally here and winter around the corner, I could think of no better sponsor than the most trusted heated apparel brand in the USA.”

‘Don’t let your life be dictated by a thermometer’ – ORORO wants to enable everybody to ‘Challenge the Climate’ with ORORO® battery heated apparel line for both men and women. ORORO’s 2019-20 product line-up includes heated vests, fleeces, jackets, hoodies, parka and gloves. With built-in safe carbon fiber heating elements powered by Lithium-ion batteries for up to 10 hours of working hours, ORORO® Heated Apparel is perfect for staying toasty without the layers in any season.

Mark H., Co-Founder of ORORO commented, “We grew up in the Midwest just like Spencer. The weather is always changing there so we wanted to create something that made staying warm and comfortable easier. We saw Spencer’s win and thought he would be a great spokesperson for our brand. Plus, didn’t it snow at a Martinsville race recently? I invite all NASCAR fans to leave the layers at home and use BOYD20 for 20% off ORORO heated clothing at www.ororowear.com for a more comfortable race weekend.”

The 24 year old race winner is looking to take the momentum from Talladega and turn it into redemption at Martinsville. The No. 20 Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado was plagued by engine issues at the spring race at the famed paperclip earlier this year. “I like this race track a lot,” says Boyd. “I grew up racing on short tracks. I’ve got a new sponsor. There’s a win sticker on my truck. It’s going to a great weekend in Martinsville, VA.”

The NASCAR Hall of Fame 200 at Martinsville Speedway on Saturday October 26, 2019 will mark the first appearance in NASCAR for ORORO ® Heated Apparel. The NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race can be seem live on FS1 or heard on the Motor Racing Network or Sirius XM Radio Channel 90 beginning at 12:30pm ET.

    Toyota Racing – Austin Hill
NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Quotes

LINCOLN, Ala. (October 11, 2019) – Hattori Racing Enterprises driver Austin Hill was made available to media at Talladega Superspeedway:

AUSTIN HILL, No.16 United Rentals Toyota Tundra, Hattori Racing Enterprises

How’s practice – you were pretty good?

“Yeah, our plan to draft with the KBM (Kyle Busch Motorsports) guys didn’t pan out the way we were anticipating. We unloaded with a mock run. We thought it was decent. We saw some guys run two or three laps in their mock run and we only ran one, so we think we are close. We are not really sure – it drove well. That’s pretty much all you can ask for at this type race track.”

New truck or same truck you had in Daytona?

“Same truck we had in Daytona. It feels like it was just as good as it was in Daytona. It drafts up – sucks up really good. I can push the guy in front of me whenever I want to. It just drives really good. I saw a lot of guys behind me, their trucks just seemed to move around a lot with the air. Our truck seems like its sealed to the track really good.”

Talk about going from the biggest track to the smallest – Martinsville – in a few weeks.
“It’s definitely a transition for sure. A place like Martinsville – is kind of like Talladega – really anything can happen. Back in the spring, we were running up front – we weren’t having a great day, but we were going to run about eighth – and we had a green-white-checkered and finished 16th because we got booted out the way. So, anything can happen at Martinsville, like anything can happen in Talladega. I feel like this race and Martinsville is going to be two of those races that you just have to have solid days, collect stage points and finish up front.”

How do you treat this race with your position in the point standings?

“I feel like you can’t really change anything you have done all season. As soon as you start changing stuff, it’s going to bite you. Just like we did in Daytona. We qualified really good and we stayed up front all race long. I think that’s kind of what we should do going into tomorrow. We need to be aggressive and we need to be upfront, because we need to get stage points. Stage points are huge. If we can go out there and win the first two stages – and get 20 stage points – that’s huge going into the next round. I’m here to win Talladega. I’m looking at Homestead, but my number one goal is to win Talladega. And if I’ve got to get aggressive to make it happen, I’m going to.”

Do you rely on your crew chief Zippy’s (Scott Zipadelli) Playoff experience?

“I kind lean on him. They have experience being in the Playoffs and winning the championship last year, so it’s definitely something we’ve talked about. It’s kind of like the round of 8. We did what we had to do to make it to the next round and we were really good at Las Vegas and we were able to get a win. But our number one goal has been to get stage points. That’s really the only thing that has changed from throughout the season. Of the races we ran, we weren’t too concerned about stage points and now that we are in the Playoffs, that’s one of the biggest things that we are concerned with – getting as many stage points as we can.”

Is this team capable of winning another championship?

“Definitely, easily. I feel like Talladega is obviously an unknown and you’ve got to get through this round. Our number one goal is to get stage points in stage one and stage two and hopefully we can be there at the end of the race for a solid top-10 if not a win. If we are in the lead, it’s going to get aggressive to try to win the race obviously. But I feel really confident going into Martinsville and Phoenix. Probably a little more confident in Phoenix than Martinsville. I feel very confident that this team is capable of being in the Final 4 and being able to compete for a championship at Homestead for sure. Especially how we have been running the last couple months. We’ve been running, firing on all cylinders, we’ve been really good.”

    Toyota Racing – Tyler Ankrum
NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Quotes

LINCOLN, Ala. (October 11, 2019) – DGR-Crosley driver Tyler Ankrum was made available to media at Talladega Superspeedway:

TYLER ANKRUM, No.17 May’s Hawaii/Modern Meat Co. Toyota Tundra, DGR-Crosley

What does this race mean to your program?

“It means a lot. David (Gilliland, team owner) being so good on speedways – he poured a lot of himself into Daytona. From what we learned there, we’ve put into it here. Everyone that I’ve ever talked with has said that Talladega was just an easy Daytona. It’s a lot wider, but I feel like it’s pretty rough. I was surprised how rough it was – especially down the straightaways. It’s a ton of fun. It’s weird – because I don’t want to say it’s boring – but it is. You are going down the straightaway – it’s like a minute long – and you are just wide open the whole time. You feel like you are driving a Cadillac down the highway. I’m sure it will be different in the draft. I haven’t got out in the draft yet. I don’t know what Toyota’s plan is – what they want to do in practice to start pulling the pack. They had a pretty solid one in first practice, but we did all single car stuff. I think the second practice, we will get after it.”

How do you balance going for the win and also being aware of your point situation?

“A nine-point deficit – you can pretty much gain that in one stage here at Talladega, but you can also lose it overall. I feel like Talladega – if it treats us right and we treat it right – we can come out of here unscathed; I think we will be fine. If you have a top-five or a top-10 day, you will be alright. That said, going forward, it would be really nice to get a win. Everyone in this field can win if it goes right for them. Being conservative to start, not doing anything stupid, I think is going to be the most important part. For me, watching the past, you have had a lot of guys go out there and get too excited, too much in a hurry in a 94, 95-lap race. So, I’m just trying to keep myself disciplined and just try to make it to Martinsville.”

How much do you feel like you have to go perform to set yourself up for next year?

“A lot. I feel like that’s the way racing is going back to. If you want to continue to move up – if you want to continue to race – you have to be out front and win. I definitely want to win again. With single car speed, we thought we were really fast out there. To be honest with you – I have no idea what I’m doing – I’m just going out there and saying, ‘I feel this, and you can tell me what to do’. With me being on a superspeedway for the first time – I wouldn’t say lost – but I’m just trying to paint the yellow line and tell them what I feel. With points and the championship coming up – after this weekend two races away – it’s definitely crunch time. We don’t want to make Phoenix our final stand.”

Do you look at this race as survival or as an opportunity?

“It’s for sure an opportunity. It’s definitely not survival time yet, but we can’t have the same issues we had last time. Bristol, we had electrical issues and Vegas, we had electrical issues. I wouldn’t have been in the position I was in Bristol or Vegas if we didn’t have those issues. So, we can’t have mistakes like that on the car side or even on my side. We have to be perfect. Especially with six. The lower and lower these rounds get, the more tight and competitive it gets. Definitely for us, being at Talladega for my first time, it’s my wild card. But to be honest with the trucks – the speed our trucks have – on superspeedways, I’m not too worried about it. I’m more worried about Martinsville. Martinsville is my worst race track. Martinsville goes against everything I have ever learned racing on short tracks. I feel like I will struggle more there than I will here. I feel like this will be a test, but Martinsville will be the real ringer. Then we’ve got to make it in Phoenix. Brett (Moffitt) didn’t even finish this race last year and he ended up winning in Phoenix and making it to Homestead and winning there. So, anything can happen. I don’t think we should root ourselves out yet, but the competition is definitely stout, and these guys definitely have years more experience than us.”

If we play our cards right we’ll be around at the end and hopefully end up in victory lane.”

    Quote:

“With the season winding down the pressure is on to perform, and this weekend at Talladega will be a true test. Historically, superspeedway racing has not been my friend, but we had a really fast truck at Daytona in February and Jerry (Baxter, crew chief) won Talladega last year for GMS so I’m confident going into this weekend’s race. I just have to be patient and let things shake out and hope we’re around at the end to show what we got. We have a decent points lead right now, we just need to be smart and hopefully we can improve on that. It would be great to come out of the weekend with a win and lock ourselves into the Championship 4 in Miami, but ultimately it’s about survival.”

  • Gus Dean ready to deliver Truck Series style at Talladega Superspeedway

Gus Dean ready to deliver Truck Series style at Talladega Superspeedway

TALLADEGA, Ala.: NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series (NGOTS) Rookie of the Year candidate Gus Dean (@gusdean) knows his way to Victory Lane at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway and he hopes to guide his Young’s Motorsports team there in Saturday afternoon’s Sugarlands Shine 250.

Dean, a native of Bluffton, S.C. burst onto the ARCA Menards Series scene in 2016 and scored his first career victory in just his second career start at the 2.66-mile superspeedway driving for Mason Mitchell Motorsports.

Fast forward to 2019, the 24-year-old has a plethora of superspeedway starts to his advantage and sees the opportunity to showcase his superspeedway skills once again aboard his No. 12 LG Air Conditioning Technologies Chevrolet Silverado.

“I’ve had this race circled on my calendar since we announced we were going Truck Series racing back in January,” said Dean. “Without a doubt, I believe our Young’s Motorsports showcased our potential to contend and be a threat for a win at Daytona in February – but this time, we’re coming to Talladega fully loaded and ready to deliver.”

While Dean, a two-time winner in the ARCA Menards Series has certainly endured some rookie bumps this season, the avid racer has increased his presence inside the top-10 over the past eight weeks and hopes to continue that trend as LG Air Conditioning Technologies and Baker Distributing returns for their sixth sponsored race of the 2019 season.

Dean credits spotter Tyler Green for being a major asset to his winning ways at Talladega Superspeedway three years ago and with Green back on the spotting tower for Saturday afternoon’s 94-lap race, Dean believes he’ll have the right components to pull off a potential upset amidst the heart of the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Playoffs.
“The chemistry between myself and Tyler is incredible,” added Dean. “He has taught me a lot during my racing career. From ARCA to Trucks, he’s been a great mentor from up above. He knows my driving style when it comes to the superspeedway and he quickly adapts to it.

“We are both determined to go to Talladega and bring back the magic we had a couple of years ago and believe I want nothing more than to deliver for LG Air Conditioning Technologies, Baker Distributing and my Young’s Motorsports team.”

Green a full-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series spotter for Kurt Busch praised Dean’s craft on the superspeedways.

“Superspeedway racing is always a challenge whether you are a driver or a spotter,” he said. “Race winning moves are made in a split-second decisions. It is very important to have the drivers trust their spotter and I feel like Gus and I have that bond.

“He’s always been a tremendous superspeedway racer and (I) think he’ll continue to showcase that on Saturday.”

In Dean’s Truck Series debut at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway, he qualified an impressive 12th and recovered from being involved in a mid-race incident to draft back inside the top-five and challenge for the race win before being collected in an accident two laps from the finish. He finished 15th.

“Hard to believe, there are only four races left this season,” sounded Dean. “Four more opportunities to get into Victory Lane.”
