Clean Harbors Partners with Milwaukee Mile for NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Return to America’s Legendary Oval

Second round playoff race to be run Aug. 27

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (April 25, 2023) – The triumphant return of NASCAR to the oldest operating motor speedway in the world will run this summer under the banner of a long-time race partner and worldwide sustainability leader – Clean Harbors.

The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series 175-lap race at the Milwaukee Mile on Aug. 27 will be named the Clean Harbors 175.

“The competitive NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series’ return to the historic Milwaukee Mile is one of the most anticipated races on the series’ schedule this season,” said Chip Wile, SVP & Chief Track Properties Officer, NASCAR. “We are proud to welcome our long-time partners Clean Harbors and Safety-Kleen as part of the series’ return to the Milwaukee market for the Clean Harbors 175.”

Wisconsin State Fair Park, home of the Milwaukee Mile, has hosted at least one auto race every year since 1903 (except during U.S. involvement in World War II). The Clean Harbors 175 marks the return of the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series to the famed course following a 13-year absence. The truck series raced 15 times at the Milwaukee Mile from 1995-2009, producing 11 different winners.

“We’re proud to have played a part in bringing this race back after so long – especially for the playoffs,” said Clean Harbors co-CEO Eric Gerstenberg. “We have a large footprint in Wisconsin and the Chicagoland area, so we’ll be packing the stands in Milwaukee with hundreds of our employees and customers. We’re also hiring for a wide range of jobs at our field services, technical services and industrial services branches in the Midwest along with all kinds of drivers. It’ll be great to network with race fans and attendees of the event. We’re thrilled to have our name associated with this race and its celebrated return to the Cream City.”

Founded in 1980 with more than 700 service locations across the United States and Canada, Clean Harbors is the continent’s leader in environmental and industrial services. Clean Harbors currently manages the 17th largest private motor carrier fleet in North America with more than 15,000 vehicles. In 2020, Clean Harbors enabled NASCAR to be the first major sport to return early in the pandemic and subsequently deep cleaned a multitude of race tracks, advancing NASCAR’s efforts to safely return to competition. Along with decontamination efforts around Ground Zero following the Sept. 11 tragedies, Clean Harbors is noted for aiding in the Deepwater Horizon response and other major oil-spill clean-up efforts.

Through its subsidiary Safety-Kleen, Clean Harbors has been a decades-long partner of NASCAR as the worldwide leader in used oil recycling. The official environmental services supplier and green partner of NASCAR, Safety-Kleen collects all used oil at race tracks then re-refines it into KLEEN+ base oil or its Performance Plus motor oil. Safety-Kleen was founded in Milwaukee in 1963 before moving its headquarters to Elgin, Ill., and later to the Dallas area prior to be acquired by Clean Harbors. Its signature parts washers are still manufactured in New Berlin, Wis.

“This is a historic race for both NASCAR and the Milwaukee area,” said Clean Harbors co-CEO Mike Battles. “Safety-Kleen has a lot of history in the region and we’re certainly a company that strives to make history with the work we do for the environment. This will be a celebration for us and we hope it’s celebration for the community that we’ve been part of for so long, too.”

The list of former winners at the Milwaukee Mile is a historic register of some of the most revered names in automobile racing. William Jones of Chicago won a five-lap speed contest, setting the first track record with a 72 second, 50-mph lap, when auto racing debuted at “America’s Legendary Oval” in 1903. Barney Oldfield, Rex Mays, Tony Bettenhausen, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Fred Lorenzen, Rick Mears, Dick Trickle and Alan Kulwicki are just some of the past winners at the iconic oval.

“Ron Hornaday, who was sponsored by Safety-Kleen, was the last NASCAR driver to win at the Milwaukee Mile, so that adds even more intrigue for us in coming back,” said Buddy Judy, Safety-Kleen’s director of motorsports.

Johnny Benson Jr., the 2008 series champion, is the winningest driver in Milwaukee after collecting a hat trick of consecutive CRAFTSMAN Truck Series wins from 2006-2008. Hornaday (1997 and 2009) and Ted Musgrave (2001 and 2004) both have a pair of victories there.

In addition to the Clean Harbors 175, fans will be treated to a double-dose of side-by-side racing action when the ARCA Menards Series opens the day’s racing card with the Sprecher 150.

“This race was always a battle and this year, in its return, won’t be any different,” said Milwaukee Mile promoter and Track Enterprises president Bob Sargent. “The relatively flat mile means lots of gear shifting, lots of lead changes and, most importantly, lots of action. The whole Track Enterprises team looks forward to NASCAR’s return to the historic Milwaukee Mile. We’re excited to see some great CRAFTSMAN Truck Series and ARCA Menards Series Racing.

“A lot of people missed this race. There’s nostalgia and there’s excitement – the best of both worlds. We think this is a win-win for everyone and anticipate the teams, fans, sponsors and local community to enjoy a fantastic weekend of action at this incredible race track.”

The Clean Harbors 175 from the Milwaukee Mile will be televised live on FS1 Sunday, August 27 beginning at 4 p.m. EDT. The race will also be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.

Grant Enfinger, No. 23 Champion Power Equipment Chevrolet Silverado RST

    START: 10TH
    FINISH: 14TH
    POINTS: 6TH

Post-Race Quote: “Pretty frustrated with how things went for us on our Champion Power Equipment Chevy. I feel like we had overall a decent truck to contend with, but we opted to try a differing strategy than what most of the field chose to do, and had it went green we would have been in good shape, but we never got to see it play out all the way. Regardless, I’m thankful for everybody’s effort this week. It’s been a tough few weeks for our No. 23 team but I think we will be able to get regrouped over these next two off weekends and come back stronger in Kansas.”

Rajah Caruth, No. 24 Wendell Scott Foundation Chevrolet Silverado RST

    START: 16TH
    FINISH: 25TH
    POINTS: 18TH

Post-Race Quote: “Well, we ended up 25th. We had quite an eventful evening with our Wendell Scott Foundation Chevrolet. From struggling really badly on the rain tires to being stuck on lap down. Literally got our lap back at that last caution then it started raining. That’s all she wrote. I hate that for our team. We would have finished around 10th to 15th. We had to put on a show for everybody. Unfortunate usage of our evening tonight here at Martinsville but we will enjoy these two off weeks and go back to Kansas.”

Daniel Dye, No. 43 Heise LED Lighting Systems Chevrolet Silverado RST

    START: 21ST
    FINISH: 31ST
    POINTS: 21ST

Post-Race Quote: “We had a fast GMS Chevy early in the day, and then just had several issues throughout the race and we couldn’t recover before the rain ended the race. Thank you to Heise LED and all of our partners for the dedicated support of our No. 43 team.”

On Friday’s Race at Martinsville Speedway: “Starting on wet-weather tires threw us off from the start, and we were never able to rebound. It’s unfortunate to have a day like this after building confidence through practice and a good qualifying run. But, that’s part of it and we’ll hopefully rebound after this two-week break.”

Due to the inclement weather delaying the start of the Long John Silver’s 200 at Martinsville Speedway, NASCAR would start the event on wet-weather tires. The race was treated by rain for a majority of the running, ultimately ending the race on lap 124.

Alan qualified inside the top-20 for the short track event but fell a lap down early with heavy fall-off on the wet-weather tires. When the competition caution flew, NASCAR would bring each team down pit road to put on normal racing slicks. From there, Alan was able to finish 29th in the stage— still trapped one lap down.

As Stage Two was set to begin, a red flag would fly for rain. Once NASCAR was able to restart the race, contact from Daniel Due spun the No. 45 Silverado around in turn four. Unfortunately, after thus spin, Alan would be two laps down and finish 35th in the second stage.

The rain once again returned in the final stage, causing the event to be called on lap 124. Alan would finish the race in 32nd, moving him to 26th in the championship standings.

Hocevar on Friday’s Race at Martinsville Speedway: “I’m proud of our Worldwide Express team for working so hard today in less than optimal conditions. It was hard to get into any kind of rhythm with the weather delays and cautions. We’ll regroup and look ahead to the next one.”

Rain loomed over Martinsville Speedway for most of the day. Fortunately, the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series was able to run the Long John Silver’s 200 Friday night, although it be rain-shortened.

The race began two hours later than originally anticipated due to in climate weather including heavy rain and lightning. But, once the race was able to go green, Carson Hocevar was able to maintain track position after starting inside the top-ten for most of the day; capturing stage points in both Stage One and Two.

Rain continued to alter the flow of the race for a majority of the rain-shortened event with constant cautions, red flags, and even some time on the wet-weather tires. Ultimately, Hocevar ended his day in 34th after a late wreck took him out of contention

Chastain On Friday’s Race at Martinsville Speedway: “Mike Hillman Jr. and this whole Worldwide Express 41 group just didn’t stop. On the rain tires to start the race, we didn’t have the grip everyone else had after a few laps. I may have gone a little to hard on those tires but everyone was. After that, we were able to keep fresh tires on it and march through the field. All in all, I think everyone I raced around raced good, hard, and clean. We were slowly making our way forward and if we ran all 200 laps, I think we get a few more.”

Ross Chastain’s day didn’t go as smooth as him, nor his No. 41 Worldwide Express team would’ve liked. Chastain qualified 25th after finishing practice in 13th, but would make up lots of ground throughout the Long John Silver’s 200.

With inclement weather passing through the area, NASCAR started the race with the wet-weather tires on all 36 trucks. With the new tire that has yet to be run in NASCAR competition, tire wear was different from the normal racing slicks. Because of that, Chastain would fall a lap down early but he would secure the free pass at the conclusion of Stage One running 27th.

Though Chastain started at the rear of the field after receiving the free pass, the Florida driver would make his way up inside the top-20. The non-eventful stage for the No. 41 team would put them in 16th going into the third and final segment.

Unfortunately, an incident in the front of the field would bring out the caution flag on lap 116. The rain would follow shortly, resulting in NASCAR calling the race with 76 laps to go. Chastain would finish in 12th, moving the No. 41 Silverado into 16th in the owner’s championship

    TOYOTA QUOTES

COREY HEIM, No. 11 Safelite Auto Glass Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, TRICON Garage

    Finishing Position: 1st

What do you have to say after picking up the win tonight?

“Our Safelite Toyota Tundra was phenomenal tonight. I just can’t thank David Gilliland, Kevin Ray, Johnny Gray, the Gray family for everything they do and how much work they have put in these last few weeks – countless hours in the shop. My 11 crew – I can’t ask for a better group of guys. Toyota Racing, Safelite, TRICON Garage, everyone at the shop – just a huge thank you.”

As a driver, what does it mean to you to be able to get past Kyle Busch?

“It means everything. I bring everything, 100% effort to every race, every week, to be able to sit here and have it pay off is phenomenal. It is a rain-shortened race, but that clock is going to tick the same in my living room.”

What was going through your head as the weather started to come down?

“Just eyes forward. Tony Hirschman, my spotter, did an amazing job coaching me through everything. I really just have to give all of the credit to my TRICON team. They’ve worked so, so, so hard these last few months and putting all the hours and effort into these trucks. Our Tundra TRD Pro was phenomenal today – just a big thank you to Toyota Racing, Safelite, everyone that makes this happen.”

How did you conquer all of those late restarts?

“I just kept my eyes forward. I just had to stay concentrated and just make sure I had a perfect day with these guys behind you. It’s really hard to hold them off unless you are perfect, and I think we did just that.”

Where is this coveted trophy going to go?

“Right in my living room. I’ve got one ticking from a few years ago from a late model win back here. If the Lee Pulliam guys are watching at home, just a lot of credit to those guys as well. I should have had another one a couple years ago, but I got it back today.”

TANNER GRAY, No. 15 JBL Toyota Tundra TRD Pro, TRICON Garage

    Finishing Position: 5th

    How was your race?

“I felt like the first run in the rain tires put us in good position with track position. Once we went to slicks, I thought we fired off okay, but with all of those heat cycles, I was building tighter and tighter. I was getting worried that if it went green much longer, I was going to start struggling pretty bad, but all-in-all, a pretty good day for us. It is a couple of good runs in a row, so we can build some momentum and keep it up. Awesome that TRICON got their first win. Corey (Heim) has been doing a great job all year; he deserves it. We just have to keep working and get better each week.”

    Long John Silver’s 200 | Saturday, April 14, 2023

    Ford Finishing Results:
    3rd – Zane Smith
    4th – Ty Majeski
    6th – Ben Rhodes
    13th – Stephen Mallozzi
    18th – Conner Jones
    20th – Hailie Deegan
    26th – Matt Crafton
    28th – Kaden Honeycutt
    33rd – Mason Massey

ZANE SMITH, No. 38 Long John Silver’s Ford F-150 – WHAT DID YOU NEED? “No rain. It was just kind of a waste of a race, to be honest. It’s just a bummer, especially to have Long John Silver’s on the truck in the Long John Silver’s 200. It’s still a good finish, but almost impossible to pass and the rain didn’t do any favors for tonight.”

HOW DID THE RAIN TIRES FEEL? “I don’t know everyone else’s opinion, but we weren’t good. We were super tight and fortunately we were able to get normal tires back on and drive back through them and come home with a top three finish.”

WHAT MORE DID YOU NEED ON THE LAST FEW RESTARTS TO GET THE LEAD? “I fought lot of wheel spin, definitely. It was just kind of hit or miss on being up top or on the bottom. Me and Kyle just kept changing. It depending on how well the third guy got going to plug that hole, but it is what it is.”

TY MAJESKI, No. 98 Soda Sense Ford F-150 – A LONG NIGHT WITH THE RAIN. “Yeah, you hate to see that for TV. Everyone wants to put on a show and it just wasn’t in the cards for us to do that for everybody tonight. Overall, it was a good day. We started 12th and with not a lot of green flag laps to be able to get to fourth was a solid day for us. I have a string of really good finishes here and I’m excited to go to Kansas. We were good there last year.”

HOW DID IT FEEL ON THE RAIN TIRES? “The track wasn’t totally wet. The biggest thing is these are road course rain tires so they don’t have any stagger. The truck was just very, very tight compared to what it is with an actual tire that’s made to turn left. It was an experience. I guess somebody had to do it first, so I don’t know. It’ll be interesting to see where that takes us in the future.”
