Layne Riggs and the No. 38 Love’s RV Stop Ford F-150

    Richmond Raceway Competition Notes

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (August 6, 2024) – Layne Riggs is back in action this weekend at the Richmond (Va.) Raceway after NASCAR’s Olympic break and his fifth-place finish at Indianapolis Raceway Park.

This will be Riggs’ second visit to the 0.750-mile asphalt track, competing there in 2022. Riggs enters the weekend in a must-win situation to make the 2024 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Playoffs in the iconic yellow, Love’s RV Stop Ford F-150.

It will be a one-day show for Riggs and the No. 38, kicking off the weekend with practice and qualifying at 2:30 pm ET on Saturday, August 10th. The Clean Harbors 250 is scheduled for Saturday evening at 7:30 pm ET and will be televised live of FS1. Fans can also listen in on the action from the Motor Racing Network and Sirius XM channel 90.

    No. 38 Love’s RV Stop Ford F-150:

    DRIVER LAYNE RIGGS:

“We’re going into this weekend with the same mindset we have had all year; show up and try to win. If we win and make the playoffs, great, but we aren’t going to hang our heads if we don’t. We have had a good season and speed, just a lot of bad luck. This is my learning year and the team’s learning year. There is still a lot of racing left in the season where we can learn, compete for wins, and prepare for 2025.”

    CREW CHIEF DYLAN CAPPELLO:

“I’m excited for this weekend. Layne (Riggs) has shown a lot of speed on short tracks this year and Richmond is just that, a short track. We have lot of good momentum from IRP, we just need to keep our same mindset and execute on all fronts. I think we can do that this weekend.”

    @BayleyCurrey05

    • Personnel Updates: Veteran crew chief, Wally Rogers, has taken over full-time duties on the No. 41 team after the team’s General Manager, Cody Efaw, subbed in for the past three races. Rogers had originally been tabbed as the crew chief on the part-time No. 44 entry, but a shift was made which now sees Tom Ackerman (Niece Competition Director) calling the shots for that truck.
    • Niece Motorsports Richmond Stats: Niece drivers have accounted for 12 NCTS starts at Richmond Raceway since it was re-added to the series schedule in 2020. Of those drivers, Carson Hocevar proved to have the most successful results with two top-10 finishes. Last year, Hocevar led the second-highest amount of laps (64) en route to a thrilling victory – the first for the organization at this track.
    • Currey’s Richmond Stats: Last year’s Truck Series event marked Bayley Currey’s only series start at Richmond, where he finished 18th. Currey has made five Xfinity Series starts here and posted a best run of 19th in 2020. He also made a lone Cup Series start at the track in 2019.
    • Rogers’ Richmond Stats: Wally Rogers has called six NCTS races at Richmond and has one top-10 finish with Ron Hornaday (10th in 2005). He’s also called 14 Xfinity Series races at this track and finished runner-up with Kevin Harvick in 2008. In six Cup Series starts, Rogers’ best result on top of the box was 27th with Jeffrey Earnhardt in 2016.
    • On the Truck: Currey’s No. 41 Chevrolet Silverado RST will race with support from DQS Solutions & Staffing along with Masked Owl Technologies.
    • Recapping Indianapolis: Bayley Currey and the No. 41 Niece Equipment team put together a respectable night in Indianapolis. The team showed promise early on in practice, where they were posted fifth fastest, but started in 22nd. The team made changes that helped gain him positions after the conclusion of stage one, and he would go on to run 14th the following stage through the finish of the race. This was the solid run they needed to help turn around their momentum.
    • Points Rundown: Heading to Richmond, Currey remains 18th in the championship points standings for the second straight week. There is a 27-point margin to Jake Garcia, who holds onto the 17th position. Being it is the last race in the regular season, Currey will have to win the race in order to qualify for the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Playoffs.
    • Quoting Currey: What are some differences between driving a truck vs. an Xfinity car at Richmond?

“Mainly just the corner speed, there’s a lot more corner speed in a truck there compared to the Xfinity car. There’s a little less wheel spin, too. Trucks at Richmond, like a lot of these places, are momentum-based so you have to try and keep that up while not smoking the tires off. That’s a big deal here especially for us.”

    • Quoting Rogers: Can you carry over some of the feedback Bayley gave at IRP and use those notes at this track?

“Richmond and IRP are a little bit different, but we can take some of the stuff we learned at that track and apply those ideas here and at Milwaukee. Hopefully we can get out of there with a better finish this time, so we’ll see.”
DQS Solutions & Staffing Mission Statement: The core mission of DQS Solutions & Staffing is to attain unparalleled excellence in our specialized domains, specifically staffing and security. Simultaneously, we maintain the flexibility required to collaborate closely with our clients in the creation of innovative products and services within the framework of DQS.

No. 42 J.F. Electric / Utilitra Chevrolet Silverado RST
Driver: Matt Mills | Crew Chief: Jon Leonard
    Matt Mills Racing
    @MattMillsRacing
    @MattMillsRacing

    • Mills’ Richmond Stats: Matt Mills has one prior Truck Series start at Richmond Raceway, which came in last year’s running of the event. Mills had a strong run in that race, where he qualified and finished in the top-five. In seven Xfinity Series starts at the track, Mills’ best result is 13th – which was obtained twice in the double header race weekend of 2020.
    • Leonard’s Richmond Stats: Jon Leonard has called one prior Truck Series race at Richmond when he worked with Stewart Friesen in 2022. Friesen finished 11th that night after qualifying in third-place. Leonard also made one start as a Cup Series crew chief at this track with Regan Smith as his driver in 2018.
    • On the Truck: Mills’ No. 42 Chevrolet Silverado RST will race with support from longtime partners J.F. Electric and Utilitra.
    • Mills Runs Well in Richmond: Barring any mechanical issues, Mills has typically thrived at Richmond Raceway. This short track falls right into his wheelhouse, and is his favorite track on the schedule. With two respectable Xfinity Series runs under his belt, he chose to add it to his limited schedule with Kyle Busch Motorsports in 2023. Last year’s running was some of Mills’ best work, where he qualified fifth and gained stage points twice en route to a fifth-place finish. It was in that race where he gained the attention of Al Niece, who eventually signed him onto the team for this season.
    • Home Race: Though he claims New Philadelphia, Ohio as his true hometown, Mills was born in nearby Lynchburg, Virginia just over two hours away from the track. He considers Richmond as his home race since Mid-Ohio was removed from the schedule this year.
    • Recapping Indianapolis: Matt Mills and the No. 42 team fought through early adversity at IRP. Mills spun and sustained heavy left front damage in practice, and subsequently was not able to post a qualifying lap. Mills fought a tight-handling truck for the majority of the race, but continued to gain positions through stage one and two. Through several adjustments, the team continued to make big swings at it on every pit stop. Ultimately, the group would wind up with a 22nd-place finish after starting 34th on the day.
    • Points Rundown: Following the 22nd-place finish in Indy, Mills’ streak of points position gains came to a close after seven strong races in a row. He’s still shown 21st in the points standings, and notably made ground up on the top-20. Bret Holmes, who currently is seeded 20th, is now only 11 points ahead of Matt heading into Richmond. In order to make the 10-driver NCTS Playoffs field, he will need to pick up the race victory on Saturday night.
    • Quoting Mills: What is it about Richmond that tends to fit your driving style?

“Richmond is one of those tracks that you have to be disciplined the whole race. What you do and how you drive the truck on lap one is going to affect how it drives on lap 40. So, just being aware of that and how big the tire falloff is there is important. You have to balance when it’s time to get positions and when you have to manage your tires. Honestly, it’s not a track for an aggressive driving style, and I think that mine is more calculated, so that helps. It’s a home track for me since I was born in Lynchburg, VA, so that has always added some extra motivation as well. It’s been a good rhythm track for me.”

    • Quoting Leonard: Since this has been a good track for Matt and for the team in the past, does that help give you a sense of direction on where you need to be setup-wise?

“I think Matt’s confidence will be high this weekend, and with Phil (Gould) and Carson (Hocevar) winning last year, we have a good baseline on where to start off with. We’ve all been comparing notes on how the trucks were built last year and where they were at on the setup which will give us a good direction on where we should be when we roll off the truck.”

Driver: Kaden Honeycutt | Crew Chief: Phil Gould

    @KadenHoneycutt10

    • Honeycutt Returns: After taking a two-race break from the Truck Series while Ross Chastain took over the ride, Kaden Honeycutt returns to make his seventh start of the season in the No. 45 Chevy for Niece Motorsports. Honeycutt will nearly round out the season schedule as he has
    • Honeycutt’s Richmond Stats: Honeycutt has started one Truck Series race at Richmond Raceway which came in 2022 when he drove for On Point Motorsports. He started and finished the race in the same position – 21st.
    • Gould’s Richmond Stats: Phil Gould has called four Truck Series races at Richmond and earned two top-10s with Carson Hocevar. Last year, Gould led his team to a convincing victory at the track which significantly boosted their momentum heading into the Playoffs.
    • On the Truck: Honeycutt’s No. 45 Chevrolet Silverado RST will race with support from Venture Foods, a family-owned grocery store chain located in Oklahoma. 2024 marks the company’s 50th anniversary of the first store opening, and has been operated by the Moore family for three generations.
    • Recapping Indianapolis: Ross Chastain was in for an eventful start to his day at IRP as he narrowly made it to the track just in time for practice. Chastain would go on to start 16th in the race, but quickly found pace in stage one. After taking his first set of tires with a handful of laps to go in the stage, Chastain’s truck rocketed to the front. He would finish sixth in both stages, but a miscue on pit road would hamper his running position in the final stint. In his final start of the year with Niece Motorsports, Chastain would go on to finish eleventh.
    • Late Models In Action: The past month has been a busy stretch of racing for Honeycutt as he’s competed in several Late Model events. Honeycutt battled engine troubles in the Hampton Heat at Langley Speedway but rebounded for a seventh-place finish. The following week, he earned another top-10 finish in the CARS Tour Pro Late Model Series (PLM) at Hickory Motor Speedway. From there, it was onto North Wilkesboro Speedway for both the CARS Tour Late Model Stock (LMS) & PLM divisions. He finished eighth in the PLM but was sidelined by a crash in the LMS race.
    • Owner Points Outlook: The No. 45 team looks to secure their spot in the NCTS Owner Playoffs in the regular season finale. Entering Richmond, the team is seeded ninth in the owner points standings, 39 points above the cutline. The No. 45 is one of only two multi-driver teams currently in the fight for postseason eligibility, along with Spire Motorsports’ No. 7 team. They are within 16 points of CR7 Motorsports’ No. 9 team in eighth.
    • Quoting Honeycutt: Do you think having all the recent late model experience will tend to help you save tires on Saturday?

“I think for Richmond, if you’re fast at the start, you’re going to be fast for the whole race; but if you’re not, you’re just not going to be quick at all from start to finish. From what I’ve seen in the past, if you can take off quick on the short run and be able to manage your stuff throughout the whole stage, you’re going to be good. You don’t want to push it too much, especially if you spin the right rear tire. If you do that, you’re just going to make it mad, and you’ll be very free just like a late model. So, you just have to manage that throughout the night. That’s the way to go.”

    • Quoting Gould: Will your team approach this race differently knowing that there is the Owner Playoffs spot on the line?

“Not really, honestly. I think we’ve had a great year and have been pretty competitive with Kaden, so we’re just going to go into this weekend and try to win the race. If we’re able to do that, the points will just take care of themselves. I think he’ll do a great job like he normally does for us.”

    • Bayley Currey’s Post-Race Thoughts: “It was a solid night tonight. We’re treading in the right direction here for sure. From going from a few DNFs, to a 17th last week, to 14th tonight, we’re getting better. IRP definitely lived up to all the hype, that was the most fun racetrack I’ve ever been on. We fired off too loose, but managed to get it back and tighten it up. We made a big charge through the field, so huge thanks to everyone at Niece Motorsports, the No. 41 team, and all the fab guys back home. We’ll take what we learned tonight and just keep getting better.”

    Owner Points: 25th

    • Key Takeaway: Matt Mills and the No.
    • Matt Mills’ Post-Race Thoughts: “I kind of put us in the hole there by not getting much practice with the slight spin. We had to start in the back and go off of what our teammates were saying. I felt like our team did a good job of getting all the damage repaired; it felt like they had everything within a 1/16th of an inch close. Honestly, I felt like we kind of missed the setup tonight. We could never really get the track position we needed, never got our truck handling as good as it should have, and just struggled. I felt like it was hard to make the changes to get us back where we needed to be. We’ll pick ourself up and take this opportunity to prepare for Richmond, which has been a good track to me in the past.”

    Owner Points: 43rd

    • Key Takeaway: In his first Truck Series short track race at IRP, Conor Daly had to overcome issues early on. In practice, a rear gear seal issue prevented him from making a qualifying attempt, which forced him to start shotgun on the field. Daly continued to learn throughout the night, and climbed up into the top-25 before debris cut his right front tire. After the issue, his truck would go a couple of laps down, resulting in a 29th-place finish.
    • Conor Daly’ Post-Race Thoughts: “Honestly, working with Stevie Reeves, my spotter, was super helpful today. I think the first stint was mainly just for me to learn a little bit. Then we got back on the lead lap, and once we took the green again, we were ripping. We were passing a ton of trucks out there and were really fast, and it felt so good. I followed Bayley (Currey), my teammate, there, and he was really cool to follow through when we ripped the top side. That was awesome, but then obviously when our right front went down, that basically ended our race. When we put on the right sides after the flat, it was a really fun next stint because we started to pass those trucks again. But, we were just never really as competitive as where we were before that. I think it was really fun. Everything has to be perfect when you want to go out there and put together a good finish, but I thought it was a great learning experience for me tonight.”

In his final start of the year with Niece Motorsports, Chastain would go on to finish eleventh.
    • Ross Chastain’s Post-Race Thoughts: “It was really cool to come back to IRP tonight. It’s well-documented, but this was where I ran my first NASCAR race at. I had a lot of flashbacks and memories from the first time I raced here. As for the race today, we got the truck better from the start of practice through the end of the race. We were tight, but when we got it turning better I was able to go forward on restarts. It was fun to make moves and run different lines to get leverage on some guys. On the last pit stop, I basically drove past my stall before I turned in, so I had to back up there and really made it tough on the pit crew. It basically threw all their timing off, so we went from sixth to the mid-teens and couldn’t recover. There’s still some things we need to work on fundamentally to make the truck last throughout the entire run, but there’s a really solid group here. With Kaden (Honeycutt) and Connor (Mosack) taking over the rest of the year, I feel really good for them. In all the races I’ve ran this year, we’ve gotten better, so it’s going to be fun to watch and cheer them on the rest of the year.”

    Sammy Smith Quotes
You’ve made a pair of starts at IRP. The track is a different animal compared to anyone else. How do you attack getting around the track?
“I had the opportunity to run an ARCA car and a Late Model at IRP in 24 hours. It’s very low grip and restarts quickly go three and four-wide. You can run up near the wall, and you can run all the way on the apron. It provides really good racing. The trucks definitely drive differently than either of the other disciplines I’ve been in there. It will be fun to get rolling and should be a fun race. I’m excited to get back there on Friday night.”
You will be hopping out of the Xfinity car after practice at IMS and jumping right into the truck at IRP to practice and qualify just over an hour afterwards. How different will those experiences be?
“It will be different for sure. They are obviously two different vehicles at two completely different race tracks. The Xfinity cars will be going a lot faster at the big track, and the trucks will be going slower and sliding around a bit more with the low-grip surface. It will be an exciting day.”
Golden Harvest is hopping aboard as the primary sponsor for your final two truck races this season. Are you excited to build on that previous relationship?
“I’m excited to have Golden Harvest onboard. They’ve been a great associate partner the last couple years on my Late Model stuff so it’s cool to see them get a primary. I’m looking forward to continuing that relationship and having a lot of farmers out at the racetrack.”

Rajah Caruth – Driver, No. 71 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado

    • Rajah Caruth will pilot Spire Motorsports’ No. 71 HENDRICKCARS.COM Chevrolet Silverado in Friday night’s TSport 200 at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

    • HENDRICKCARS.COM is the online home for everything Hendrick Automotive Group. Visitors can shop thousands of new or pre-owned vehicles, locate centers for service and collision repair, receive a value to sell or trade their car, chat online with customer service, discover career opportunities, learn more about vehicle protections programs, and explore how the company gives back to the community.
    • The Winston-Salem (N.C.) State University senior has one prior start in the NCTS at the 0.68-mile short track, qualifying fourth and finishing seventh in last year’s event. His lone ARCA start at the Indiana oval in 2022 concluded with an eighth-place finish.
    • The 21-year-old has seen plenty of success on short tracks, collecting Late Model wins at Greenville-Pickens (S.C.) Speedway and Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway early in his racing career.
    • In 11 short track starts in ARCA Menards Series (AMS) competition, Caruth has racked up five top-five and nine top-10 finishes. He also boasts four top 10’s on short tracks in a truck.
    • Caruth scored his career-best finish in 19 NASCAR Xfinity Starts at a short track, crossing the line 12th at the 0.5-mile Martinsville Speedway last fall.
    • The Washington, D.C., native is currently fifth in the NCTS championship point standings after 14 races. He has logged one pole, one win, seven top-10 and 11 top-15 finishes. He’s recorded an 11.1 average start, an 11.2 average finish and completed 97.5 percent of the laps contested this season.
    • With his first career NCTS win and pole position earlier this season at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Caruth became the third African American driver, alongside NASCAR Hall of Famer, Wendell Scott and current NASCAR Cup Series regular Bubba Wallace, to win a NASCAR National Touring Series race.
    • Caruth raced his first full season in NCTS in 2023, earning four top-10 finishes and coming home 16th in the division’s championship point standings.
    • Crew chief Chad Walter has called the shots four prior times at IRP, all in Xfinity Series competition. During his stint at Team Penske, he guided Justin Allgaier to a top-ten finish at the track in 2010.
    • Walter has seen success all across “The Hoosier City.” He helped Sam Hornish, Jr., to a runner-up finish in the inaugural Xfinity Series race at IMS.
    • The No. 71 Silverado racing on Friday evening is identified as Spire Manufacturing chassis SMT-003. Earlier this season, the truck finished seventh at Martinsville Speedway with Rajah Caruth behind the wheel. The chassis has been driven to victory lane twice by William Byron (Martinsville, 2022) and Kyle Larson (North Wilkesboro, 2023).

    Rajah Caruth Quotes
IRP was one of your best “all-around” performances last season. How are you looking to build on your solid day at the track last year?
“I think overall we have just gotten better, both myself and Chad (Walter). We have made some improvements. I have also gotten better at short tracks, which is something I have really been focusing on. That’s a spot I know I’ve needed to improve. IRP is a track I have a little experience at between ARCA and trucks, so hopefully that correlates to a good run this weekend.”
The progressive banking at IRP opens a variety of lines drivers can utilize and make time. Does this add to your excitement as a driver and which line do you prefer to run?
“IRP is interesting because the seams determine the banking of the racetrack. Meaning, the higher you go, the more banking the racetrack has. It’s really a testament to how well your truck works. If your truck is turning well, you can take the inner line with the least amount of banking that is the shortest way around. If your truck isn’t turning, you can use the banking on the higher side of the track to help make the corner. It’s a racetrack that’s a different animal with good tools to use no matter how the truck handles.”

Chase Purdy – Driver, No.77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado

    • Chase Purdy will pilot Spire Motorsports’ No.77 Bama Buggies Chevrolet Silverado in Friday night’s TSport 200.
    • The 24-year-old sits 14th in the NCTS driver points standings, 61 points behind the playoff cut line with two races remaining in the regular season.
    • Last week, Purdy started 16th and finished sixth in the CRC Brakleen 175 at Pocono Raceway.
    • The Meridian, Miss., native has two starts at IRP in Truck Series competition, logging a venue-best finish of 14th last year.
    • In his lone ARCA Menards Series start at the Indiana oval, Purdy started and finished fourth after pacing the field for 25 laps in 2018.
    • On a quest for his first win, the TSport 200 will mark Purdy’s 90th NCTS start and 15th behind the wheel of the No.77 Bama Buggies Chevrolet Silverado for Spire Motorsports.
    • Purdy finished third in the 11-race Sioux Chief Short Track Challenge series within the 2018 ARCA season. He racked up six top fives and nine top 10s while achieving a sixth-place average starting starting position and a 6.9 average finish.
    • While racing for Kyle Busch Motorsports in 2023, Purdy had the best statistical season of his career thus far. He racked up three top-five, 11 top-10 and 14 top-15 finishes while earning a career-best finish of second at Texas Motor Speedway (April 1) and claiming the first Truck Series pole of his career at Kansas Speedway (Sept. 8). He would snag his second pole two races later at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway (Sept.30), a race in which he led a career-high 11 laps.
    • Crew chief Jason Trinchere will make his debut atop the box at IRP, but has called the shots twice in NASCAR Xfinity Series competition down the road at the road course configuration at IMS. During his time at Kaulig Racing, he helped A.J. Allmendinger to a second-place finish in 2021.
    • Purdy will be piloting Spire Manufacturing chassis SMT-038 on Friday evening in its 31st start. The chassis has led nearly 900 laps, maintained an average finish of 6.5 and visited victory lane seven times, most recently at Texas Motor Speedway in 2021 with John Hunter Nemechek behind the wheel.

    Chase Purdy Quotes
The playoffs are closing in and you find yourself battling at the cutline. What is your mindset heading into the weekend?
“We have one goal heading into this weekend. Win.”
The progressive banking at IRP opens a variety of lines drivers can utilize and make time. How does affect the way you can move through the field?
“The progressive banking makes it a multi-groove track. You can run as high or as low as you want, and still make speed. It makes it exciting as a driver and for the fans. The ability to move around and change lanes gives the driver a lot of options. It creates more opportunities to make passes.”

We have shown a lot of speed on short tracks this year, and it’s the type of racing I grew up on in my late model days, so I am confident in our performance this weekend. Like I’ve been saying all year, just need to bring a fast Long John Silver’s Ford F-150 and execute on all fronts and I think we have a shot to win.”

    CREW CHIEF DYLAN CAPPELLO:

“This track has Layne’s (Riggs) name written all over it. He is a short track guy through and through. We had a good sim session and are confident that we can execute a solid race, it just comes down to qualifying up front and staying up there.”

Ford Performance NASCAR – 2024 Indianapolis Advance

    INDIANAPOLIS

    Friday, July 19 — NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series @ LOR, 8:30 p.m. ET (FS1)
Saturday, July 20 — NASCAR Xfinity Series @ IMS, 3:30 p.m. ET (USA)
Sunday, July 21 — NASCAR Cup Series @ IMS, 2:30 p.m. ET (NBC)

Indianapolis will once again serve as the auto racing hub of America this weekend as NASCAR’s top three series makes its annual stop. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series kicks off the racing action on Friday night at Lucas Oil Raceway while the NASCAR Cup and NASCAR Xfinity Series cars will return to the IMS Oval for the first time since 2020 when Ford’s Kevin Harvick was victorious.

    FORD ROLL CONTINUES

Ryan Blaney’s victory on Sunday at Pocono Raceway continued Ford’s recent hot streak that has now seen a Blue Oval win six times in the last 10 events, including Joey Logano’s triumph in the All-Star Race. Blaney led the final 44 laps to register his second win of the season and 12th of his Cup career. Ford’s winning ways started when Brad Keselowski took the checkered flag at Darlington Raceway and since then Logano and Blaney each have two wins while Austin Cindric has one.

    WINNING WAYS

May 12 – Brad Keselowski at Darlington
May 19 – Joey Logano at North Wilkesboro (All-Star Race)
June 2 – Austin Cindric at WWTR
June 16 – Ryan Blaney at Iowa
June 30 – Joey Logano at Nashville
July 14 – Ryan Blaney at Pocono

    HARVICK LAST OVAL WINNER

Kevin Harvick holds the distinction of being the last NASCAR Cup Series driver to win on the oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway after he took the checkered flag for the second straight year in 2020. Harvick came out on top following an overtime restart in a race that saw him lead 68 of the 161 laps and was delayed at the start for weather. Overall, six Ford drivers finished inside the top 10, including Aric Almirola (3rd), Brad Keselowski (4th), Cole Custer (5th), Michael McDowell (7th) and Joey Logano (10th).

JOSH BERRY: “I think Indianapolis Motor Speedway is so historic, and when you think of NASCAR at Indy, you think of the Brickyard 400 on the oval, right? So, to me, it’s a no-brainer to be there on the oval, and it’s going to be really special to run laps there. I’ve been to Indy on the road course but not on the oval. So, it’s going to be a challenge learning that, but it’s super exciting to go there and it’s going to be a challenge learning that. It’s a marquee event that we all want to run really well in.”

MICHAEL MCDOWELL: “It is cool to go back there because we won last year and there will be banners there with us in victory lane. That is cool. It is going to be fun. I know people won’t believe me when I say this, but I am. I wish we were still racing on the road course or had a doubleheader, but I believe we should be racing on the oval at Indy as well. Just its history, and it’s just different. The feel is different. It’s no different than the Indy 500 versus the Indy Grand Prix when the Indy Car guys run on the road course. It’s still a cool race and still a cool weekend, but it’s not the Indy 500. I’m excited about going back to the Oval and I’m looking forward to it. I’ve been in the sport a long time, so I have a lot of seat time there. Some other guys do, but a lot of the guys don’t. I look at that as an opportunity, and I’ve driven a lot of different packages there from low downforce to high downforce, no drag to a lot of drag, a thousand horsepower to five hundred horsepower. I feel like I’ve experienced a lot there, and I’m looking forward to getting the Next Gen car on the Indy Oval and see what it can do.”

NOAH GRAGSON: It’ll be awesome to get on the Oval. I’ve only run that Oval configuration once in my career, and that was in the Xfinity Series in 2019. It’ll be a little bit different because the Xfinity cars back then had the drafting, aero-duct package, and low horsepower. You had to draft the whole race, and it was kind of tricky to pass. I don’t know exactly what it’s going to be like. I haven’t been on there in five years, and on top of that, it’s a Cup car. It’s a different vehicle, but having some experience in the tunnel turn, turn two at Pocono, that corner is replicated off of Indianapolis, so to be able to get reps throughout the weekend before Indy is crucial to getting into a rhythm and at least having a little knowledge of what it might feel like when we get out there. I’ve done work on the simulators for Indianapolis and it’s a great track. There’s a lot of history there. The fans are awesome there. My first ever race as a spectator was going to the Indianapolis 500 in 2009 and to be able to go back there as a driver now and not a fan, you feel that presence of what the Brickyard means to you. Just being there as a fan back in the day, to be able to go there and remember everything that stuck out in my mind, it’s pretty cool to relive that.”

    THREE JEWELS FOR DJ

The first time Ford found victory lane on the oval at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a NASCAR Cup Series race was in 1996 when Dale Jarrett won the first of his two Brickyard 400 championships. What made the race most memorable from a Ford perspective is that it ended up being a battle between Jarrett and his Robert Yates Racing teammate, Ernie Irvan. The two ended up breaking away from the field as Irvan found himself in the lead after passing Jarrett on lap 139, but when he pushed up the track going into turn two with only seven laps to go, Jarrett was there to take advantage and make the pass. Jarrett held on to eventually win as the race ended under caution. That completed a trifecta of sorts for Jarrett, who also won the Daytona 500 and Coca-Cola 600 earlier that season, and capped a memorable day for Ford with seven finishers in the Top 10 and 11 in the top 14.

    RUDD’S BIG WIN

One of the most recent NASCAR Hall of Fame inductees, Ricky Rudd, stretched his fuel to the limit in winning the 1997 Brickyard 400 as he went the final 46 laps without stopping. That decision, along with a pair of timely cautions, enabled him to gain the lead and hold it until the checkered flag. Rudd inherited the lead on lap 147 after the yellow flag came out for debris from Robby Gordon hitting the wall. While leader Dale Jarrett and fellow contender Jeff Gordon were forced to pit for fuel under the caution, Rudd stayed out. Another caution with seven laps remaining allowed Rudd to save the necessary fuel to make it the rest of the way. In a single-file restart with three laps to go, Rudd led Bobby Labonte, Johnny Benson, Mark Martin, Jarrett and Gordon. Labonte was never able to get closer than a couple of car lengths as Rudd posted his second win of the season and biggest triumph of his career.

    A MAST-ERFUL START

Another memorable Brickyard highlight came in the inaugural weekend in 1994 when Rick Mast won the pole while driving the No. 1 Ford of car owner Richard Jackson. Mast went on to lead the first lap at the speedway in official NASCAR competition, but ended up finishing one lap down in 22nd place. The pole was one of four Mast earned during his 15-year NASCAR Cup Series career.

    CUSTER CLIMBING WIN LIST

Defending NASCAR Xfinity Series champion Cole Custer won his first race of the 2024 season last weekend at Pocono Raceway and also increased his lead in the point standings to 51 over second-place Justin Allgaier. The win was also Custer’s 14th career series victory, moving him into a sixth-place tie with Matt Kenseth on the all-time Ford win list. The next driver on the list is Jeff Burton, who won 17 times during his career.

    FORD ALL-TIME NXS WIN LIST

    Mark Martin, 47
    Carl Edwards, 38
    Brad Keselowski, 19
    Greg Biffle, 18
    Jeff Burton, 17
    Cole Custer, 14
    Matt Kenseth, 14

TWO RACES REMAINING IN REGULAR SEASON

There are only two races remaining in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series regular season and two Ford drivers are currently inside the top 10 that will advance to the playoffs. Ty Majeski is the highest driver in the standings among those who have yet to win, sitting fourth, while defending series champion Ben Rhodes is fighting for one of the final spots as he goes into the weekend ninth in the standings. The top 10 drivers will make the playoffs and compete in a seven-race battle to determine this year’s champion.

HEIM TIME: TRICON GARAGE DRIVER DOMINATES NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCK SERIES CRC BRAKLEEN 175

Corey Heim sweeps all the stages and leads a race-high 55 laps for his series-leading fifth win of the season.

LONG POND, Pa. (July 12, 2024) – Corey Heim arrived at Pocono Raceway with a vengeance and left with a victory.

Heim, who lost on the final lap in last season’s NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race at “The Tricky Triangle,” rebounded with a dominant victory in the CRC Brakleen 175. The 22-year-old TRICON Garage driver swept all the stages and led a race-high 55 laps as he earned his series-leading fifth victory of the season.

It also was his third top-five finish in as many starts at Pocono Raceway, with the victory following a runner-up effort to Kyle Busch last season and a fourth in 2022.

“It was such a big deal (to win this one) because I feel like I gave the race away (last year here),” Heim said. “There have been races we’ve lost where it’s been more circumstantial, and it’s like ‘well, there’s nothing you could have done,’ but at the end of the day that was my race to lose and I lost it.”

“Coming back here this year, reviewing that and understanding what I could have done better was big for me even though there was never really another time where I had to play that scenario out. I knew I was going to have to be aggressive from the first lap and it all worked out in the end. I don’t know if there is another race that I feel like I brutally messed up and wanted to redeem myself, but this was probably the top of the list for me since (last year) it was the last lap and second to the last corner, so it definitely tops the charts there.”

Heim was never seriously challenged and the only drama remaining was when the 70-lap, 175-mile race was red flagged for wet conditions due to a light intermittent rain with eight laps remaining. The field returned with Heim at the point for two caution laps before the red flag was thrown again for the wet conditions. After a brief delay, Heim led the field back out for two more caution laps before going green with three to go.

Heim took the outside and Christian Eckes of McAnally-Hilgemann Racing took the inside on the restart. Heim got a great restart while Eckes spun but made a great save to continue. He quickly opened up a .85 of a second lead on second-place Grant Enfinger of CR7 Motorsports on the first lap. He was never threatened the remainder of the way as he posted his fourth win in the last seven races.

With same-day qualifying cancelled due to light intermittent rain, Eckes, the points leader, started on the pole and Heim beside him on the front row.

Eckes came out strong as he led the first 11 laps of the opening stage before Heim overtook him on the ensuing lap. He would lead the final four laps to capture the first stage and set the tone for the remainder of the race.

The 15-lap second stage was all Heim as he led every lap and was never threatened for the lead. The only blemish came at the opening of the third and final stage when ThorSport Racing’s Jake Garcia stayed out to gain the lead briefly. Garcia led four laps before Heim made the pass, leaving the only slim chance the field had at catching him was when the red flag came out.

    Start: 20th
    Stage 1: 32nd
    Stage 2: 22nd
    Finish: 17th
    Driver Points: 18th
    Owner Points: 22nd

    • Key Takeaway: As rain washed away the Pocono qualifying session, Bayley Currey would start mid-pack in 20th position. On the first lap of the race, contact with the left rear tire forced the No. 41 Chevy to pit, resulting in a 32nd-place run in stage one. Currey rose to 22nd in stage two, and made up a handful of positions to finish in 17th.
    • Bayley Currey’s Post-Race Thoughts: “Lackluster day for sure, we had a solid truck but got hit in the left rear on lap one. I came down pit road with it smoking real bad in the corners and thought the tire was going down. That put us behind all day. I was trying to fight for track position and make up spots on pit road, but it was tough. We came down at the end and put some tires on it to salvage a decent top-20 finish. I was hoping for a top-15; it was there, but I just didn’t capitalize enough in the last corner. But, that’s automobile racing, I guess. It seems like everything that can happen will happen to us, but the truck came home pretty straight. When we got out front, it handled really well and we were running as fast as the leader. It was just hard to keep track position. Big thanks to DQS, Masked Owl Technologies, AutoVentive, Precision, and everyone on our No. 41 Chevy team.”

    Stage 2: 10th
    Finish: 11th
    Driver Points: 21st
    Owner Points: 25th

    • Key Takeaway: Thanks to his top-10 finish at Nashville, Matt Mills would start the highest of the Niece Motorsports drivers in 13th after qualifying was canceled. Mills showed promise throughout the race as he gained confidence in his truck. Following a 13th-place run in stage one, Mills climbed to 10th in stage two to pick up a point. Before the red flags came out for rain, the No. 42 was slated to finish sixth, but ultimately dropped to eleventh. Still, a solid showing for the team.
    • Matt Mills’ Post-Race Thoughts: “Overall, it was a good day for us. It was a nice change to start up front with that track position. We just fired off a bit loose and built tight throughout the race. Jon (Leonard) made some good calls to keep us in track position. I thought we still had a good truck even with it getting tight. I learned a lot today manipulating the air, but didn’t learn enough by the end there. I cost us a couple of spots just trying to be greedy and making aggressive moves, but overall, I learned a lot. It’s another good day, we have another clean J.F. Electric/Utilita Chevy, and we built up a pretty good notebook for next year.”

    Stage 2: 7th
    Finish: 5th
    Driver Points: N/A
    Owner Points: 10th

    • Key Takeaway: By virtue of the qualifying metric, Ross Chastain started the deepest in the field of the Niece Motorsports drivers in 27th position. He did not stay there for long, however, as he made quick work early on to pick up track position. A 16th-place finish in stage one propelled him to a seventh-place run in stage two, enabling Chastain to fight for the win in the closing laps of the race. With just a handful of laps to go, his truck began to stumble, but held on following both red flags to come home with a top-five finish.
    • Ross Chastain’s Post-Race Thoughts:
Interviewer: You had some issues on your truck there at the end. On the restart, were the issues still there?
“No, it made it! I’m happy. I mean, we gave up one spot, I didn’t get attached to the No. 19 well, so I didn’t give him the push he deserved. I got to him too late with the No. 77 pushing me and knocked our nose in. For all things considered, I’m happy with fifth. Our Mar-Del Watermelon Association Silverado was fast today, and it’s always fun to race these trucks for Al (Niece), Cody (Efaw), and Phil (Gould).”
