  • NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart to compete in NASCAR Xfinity Series Race July 4 at Indianapolis

NASCAR Hall of Famer Tony Stewart to compete in NASCAR Xfinity Series Race July 4 at Indianapolis

Tony Stewart will compete in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race July 4 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in a Ford Mustang from Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR).

The three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and 2020 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee will headline the inaugural Xfinity Series event on Indianapolis’ 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course, with the 62-lap race serving as Stewart’s 28th overall start at the Brickyard but his first in the Xfinity Series. Stewart has competed in 18 Brickyard 400s, five Indianapolis 500s and four IROC Series races. Stewart is a two-time Brickyard 400 winner (2005 and 2007) and a member of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame.

“Everyone knows what Indy means to me, so I can’t think of a better place to race on Fourth of July weekend,” said Stewart, who grew up 45 minutes from Indianapolis in the towns of Columbus and Rushville, Indiana. “It’s going to be cool making history by turning left and right in a stock car at the Brickyard, and the racing will be full of action and contact. Any time you can drive any racecar at the speedway is special, and you know I’m going for the win. The date is already circled on my calendar.”

The road course at Indianapolis has hosted INDYCAR, Formula One, sports cars and even MotoGP, but never NASCAR. And while Stewart is no stranger to Indianapolis, be it in open-wheel Indy cars or full-bodied stock cars, he has never driven the road course in any type of racecar. But Stewart has proven to be prolific when turning left and right. He has eight road-course wins in the NASCAR Cup Series, including his 49th and final career victory in 2016 at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway. Stewart is second to only Jeff Gordon for the most road-course wins in the NASCAR Cup Series with a tally that includes Sonoma in 2001, 2005 and 2016 and Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International in 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2009.

Outside of the NASCAR Cup Series, Stewart has a road-course win in IROC and a near win in the prestigious Rolex 24 At Daytona. Stewart won Round III of IROC XXX on the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway road course en route to the 2006 series championship. He also competed in the prestigious Rolex 24 At Daytona five times, with a best finish of third in 2005 with co-drivers Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace. Stewart nearly won the 2004 Rolex 24 At Daytona, where with co-drivers Wallace and Dale Earnhardt Jr., they led 355 of the 526 laps available and had a commanding five-lap advantage before mechanical problems less than 20 minutes short of the finish ended their shot at victory and placed them a disappointing fourth.

Stewart’s most recent road-course outing came in a demonstration run last October at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas. He took an SHR-prepared Ford Mustang specially outfitted with a passenger seat around the 3.426-mile, 20-turn layout and showed Haas F1 Team drivers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen how to wheel a 3,200-pound racecar around America’s only purpose-built Formula One track.

“It was a lot of fun for me to get in one of our Ford Mustangs and do that exhibition run at COTA,” Stewart said. “It kind of got my juices flowing to get back in a car again, and what better place to come back than Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

The Indiana 150 will mark Stewart’s 95th career Xfinity Series start and his first since the 2013 season opener at Daytona, where Stewart collected his 11th Xfinity Series victory. It will also mark Stewart’s first NASCAR start since the 2016 NASCAR Cup Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

“People sometimes say, ‘We miss seeing you behind the wheel,” and I’m like, ‘Well, you’ve just got to go to different places now’,” said Stewart, who has collected 23 wins in an assortment of sprint car races since retiring as a full-time NASCAR driver at the end of the 2016 season. “I’m racing 100 times a year in a sprint car, but seeing some of these road-course races – especially the Roval at Charlotte – piqued my interest a bit, and running the stock car at COTA, it kind of fed my hunger. All of it has led me back to the place I’ve always called home – Indy.”

Details regarding Stewart’s car number, crew and primary partner will be announced closer to the race.

  • Noah Gragson captures first Xfinity Series win at Daytona

Noah Gragson captures first Xfinity Series win at Daytona

Noah Gragson was in the right place at the right time and grabbed his first Xfinity Series win in the season-opening NASCAR Racing Experience 300 at Daytona International Speedway in the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevy. He took the lead from Chase Briscoe on the final restart of the race and was scored as the winner when a caution came out on the last lap.

The final restart came on Lap 118 of the 120-lap race as Gragson moved to the lead. A multi-car wreck in Turn 3 brought out the final race caution on Lap 120 and he was declared the winner, besting second-place Harrison Burton by 0.631 seconds.

It was the 21-year-old’s first victory in the series in 37 starts but it was the seventh win at Daytona for car owner, JR Motorsports, who has now won three of the season-openers in a row.

He thanked everyone who has helped him along the way, particularly team owner, Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“Man, I’m speechless right now,” Gragson said. “I didn’t think this would come. But there’s so many people who made this possible for me, Dustin Ash back at home, the O’Hanley family, Jefferson Pitts Racing, Kyle Busch Motorsports, everybody who’s helped me get to this point.

“I spent a lot of time with Dale Jr. this week, talked to him for about two hours, and wanted to be a better speedway racer. He told me, go have fun; wreckers or checkers; you’ve got to manage your gaps, be there at the end, and just go lead the damn thing. That’s what we did.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Harrison Burton finished second in his debut race for the team.

Although he conceded it was a great finish, he had hoped for more and credited his fallen friend, John Andretti, whose presence he felt during the race.

“Not as great as it could have been, which is unfortunate,” Burton said. “There was a couple times where we almost got wrecked, and we kind of barely squeaked out of it, so I know I had John Andretti kind of over my shoulder watching me for that. That was really cool. There was a couple times this weekend in general where I blew a tire in practice and somehow didn’t wreck. Had a lot of help there from him.”

Timmy Hill, who qualified for the upcoming Daytona 500 in the Bluegreen Vacations Duel 2, finished third, saying, “I just feel like this year is kicking off on a great note. Making the Daytona 500 on Thursday was awesome. I didn’t think it could get any better. Third place was a nice finish. I thought we could’ve had a shot at the win.”

Brandon Jones and Chase Briscoe rounded out the top five as Justin Haley, Brandon Brown, Ray Black Jr., Ryan Sieg and Alex Labbe completed the top 10 finishers.

  • Noah Gragson Wins NASCAR Racing Experience 300; Final DAYTONA 500 Practice Led by Former Champion Joey Logano

Noah Gragson Wins NASCAR Racing Experience 300; Final DAYTONA 500 Practice Led by Former Champion Joey Logano

    • Logano, Five Others Top 200 mph in Practice
    • 62nd Annual DAYTONA 500 Set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 15, 2020) – Noah Gragson won the NASCAR Racing Experience 300 on Saturday  to open the NASCAR Xfinity Series season at Daytona International Speedway.

Gragson, driving the No. 9 Bass Pro Shops/BRCC Chevrolet for JR Motorsports and car owner Dale Earnhardt Jr., emerged from a tight battle after the race’s final restart on Lap 118 of the 120-lap/300-mile race being held for the 62nd time at the “World Center of Racing.” Gragson took the lead on Lap 118 and kept it until a Turn 3 multi-car incident brought out the yellow flag on Lap 120 to effectively end the race under caution.

Gragson nipped runner-up Harrison Burton (No. 20 Dex Imaging Toyota) by 0.631 seconds. Timmy Hill (No. 66 VSI Racing/RoofClaim.com Toyota) finished third.

After getting his first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory, the 21-year-old Gragson celebrated like a veteran – and a champion – by climbing the frontstretch fencing and gesturing to the fans in attendance.

“That was bad-ass,” Gragson said. “I’m so thankful for this opportunity and I’m very proud of this team. I spent a lot of time with Dale Jr. this week. I talked to him for about two hours. I wanted to be a better superspeedway racer.

“He told me to go have fun … wreckers or checkers … you’ve got to manage your gaps … be there at the end … and just go lead the damn thing. And that’s what we did.”

Added Earnhardt, winner of 17 races at Daytona International Speedway during his NASCAR career: “We just sat down and talked about all the scenarios you find yourself in, in the draft. I like sharing that information with drivers. This was just a great day for JR Motorsports.

“This (going to Gatorade Victory Lane) never gets old.  You know, I don’t expect I’ll ever do it again as a driver, so I’ll take these whenever they’re coming, right?  If I can get in here as an owner or part of any kind of success like this, it’s a great feeling.”

Also on Saturday, the last of four practice sessions was held for Sunday’s 62nd annual DAYTONA 500 (2:30 p.m. ET; TV – FOX; Radio – MRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Joey Logano, the 2015 DAYTONA 500 champion, led the practice with a fast lap of 200.517 mph in the No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Ford. Logano was one of six drivers to post laps above 200 mph; there surely would have been more if 14 drivers had not opted to bypass the session.

One of those sitting out was defending and two-time DAYTONA 500 champion Denny Hamlin (No. 11 FedEx Express Toyota). In fact, none of the five Toyota drivers in the field took part. That seemingly play-it-safe approach seemed reasonable. No matter where you qualify, if you switch to a back-up car or change an engine, you must go to the rear of the field at the start of the race. And going from back-to-front is no easy task in this 40-car field.

“Towards the end, I can see it being very aggressive,” Logano predicted. “Everyone is racing so hard. Everyone knows what it means to win the DAYTONA 500, how big of a deal it is. And you know you’re going to see some aggressive driving out there and that usually causes crashes.”

The DAYTONA 500 opens the season for the NASCAR Cup Series; it will be watched by a sellout crowd.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (No. 47 Kroger Chevrolet) will start on the DAYTONA 500 pole. Alex Bowman (No. 88 Valvoline Chevrolet) will roll off alongside Stenhouse.

Tickets for the 50th annual DAYTONA Supercross on March 7 and all other Daytona International Speedway events can be purchased online at www.daytonainternationalspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-PITSHOP. Fans can stay connected with Daytona International Speedway on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, PinterestYouTube and Snapchat, and by downloading Daytona International Speedway’s mobile app, for the latest Speedway news throughout the season.

Allmendinger to Enter Eight Races for Kaulig Racing in 2020

LEXINGTON, N.C. (January 30, 2020) – Kaulig Racing has announced the return of veteran driver, AJ Allmendinger, for a total of eight races in the 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) season. Kaulig Racing announced earlier this year that Allmendinger would be piloting the team’s third entry at Daytona International Speedway, alongside teammates Ross Chastain and Justin Haley.

Additionally, Allmendinger will be entered in seven more races in 2020 for Kaulig Racing. Those races include both events at Daytona International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Road America, Watkins Glen, and the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he is the defending race winner.

“AJ (Allmendinger) has played an instrumental role in competition for Kaulig Racing,” states Chris Rice, President of Kaulig Racing. “He has helped guide our road course program and has been a great resource for our other drivers, crew chiefs and engineers to lean on. I look forward to what he can do in more races for us this season.”

Allmendinger, who competed in a total of five races for Kaulig Racing in 2019, recorded two top-five finishes, including one win – the team’s second ever.

“I’m looking forward to returning to the Kaulig Racing organization,” said Allmendinger. “I had so much fun working with everyone on the team last season and being teammates with Justin(Haley) and Ross (Chastain). Hopefully I can help the team in any way possible so that we can build on the success we had last year and go for more wins. More than anything, Kaulig Racing is just a great team to compete for, especially with Matt Kaulig as the owner and Chris Rice as the President of the team.”

Richard Childress Racing Names Andy Street as Xfinity Series Crew Chief

Street to Lead Efforts on Multi-Driver No. 21 Chevrolet Camaro

WELCOME, N.C. (January 24, 2020) – Long-time Richard Childress Racing team member Andy Street has been promoted to crew chief within the organization’s NASCAR Xfinity Series program, building on a long-standing tradition of utilizing the Series to grow and develop talent from within. Street, a Kernersville, North Carolina native and 16-year veteran employee at RCR, will lead a multi-driver lineup that includes Myatt Snider, Anthony Alfredo, and Kaz Grala, in the No. 21 Camaro in the Xfinity Series.

“Over the years, we have been able to successfully use our NASCAR Xfinity Series program as a proving ground for talent and it’s always a strong testament to our ladder system when we are able to promote from within,” said Danny Lawrence, director of RCR’s Xfinity Series program. “Andy has played an integral part of RCR’s success during his long career here in both the Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Cup Series and we know he is ready, capable and poised for success as a crew chief. Our hope is that this is Andy’s first step to succeeding as a crew chief and that he will win races and move up within the company.”

Since joining RCR as a design and test engineer in 2003, Street has served in a variety of roles within the company, most recently working closely with up-and-coming drivers in the Xfinity Series as an engineer, and playing a key role in R&D as a design engineer specializing on chassis and suspension systems. He has contributed to several key wins for the organization as a team engineer in the NASCAR Cup Series, working with Kevin Harvick and Clint Bowyer, winning a combined 10 races.

“Andy is a brilliant design engineer, who has spent a lot of time and effort at RCR over the past 16 years,” said Andy Petree, vice president of competition. “When Andy stepped into the Xfinity Series crew chief role in Richmond Raceway last fall, I was very impressed with how he went about the weekend running and leading the race team. He proved he is worthy of this role. He’ll be the perfect complement to both Justin Alexander and Randall Burnett because of his engineering background and having worked with both of these guys on the R&D side of the company.”

Street, who holds a degree in mechanical engineering from UNC Charlotte, rounds out a 2020 crew chief lineup that includes Justin Alexander (No. 3 Chevrolet) and Randall Burnett (No. 8 Chevrolet), strengthening RCR’s focus on engineering and technology.

“I am honored for this opportunity to work as a crew chief within this organization where I have spent a majority of my career,” said Street. “I know that we have the tools necessary to win races. It means so much to me that Richard Childress, Andy Petree and Danny Lawrence have the confidence in me to help develop Myatt Snider, Anthony Alfredo and Kaz Grala as they try to make a name for themselves in the Xfinity Series. I will work my hardest to represent RCR to the best of my ability.”

Street, who currently resides in Lexington, N.C. with his wife Lauren and daughter, Addison, is a former drag racer. He spent many of his high school days on the road traveling around the state driving a 1972 Chevrolet Nova in the sportsman bracket program, as well as a 1981 Chevrolet Camaro in the local top sportsman series. He notched his first win, of many, in 1996 at Farmington Dragway.

We couldn’t be more excited to see them through to the finish line.”

Snider, an accomplished driver whose resume includes 2018 NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Rookie of the Year honors, joins an impressive list of drivers who have competed in the NASCAR Xfinity Series under the Richard Childress Racing banner, including Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Austin Dillon, Ty Dillon, Daniel Hemric and Tyler Reddick, among others.

“I am thrilled to be driving for Richard Childress Racing in 2020,” said Snider. “It’s an honor to drive for a team with such a rich history in the sport, and I’m excited to start learning from everyone. After a great season of racing in Europe this past year, I’m excited to be back home and moving up to the NASCAR Xfinity Series.”

“I’m also happy TaxSlayer has returned for another year to support my racing career,” continued Snider. “I’m honored to be a part of bringing them back to the Xfinity Series. TaxSlayer has been a loyal partner of mine, and I can’t wait to see what we can build together moving forward. I know the season just ended, but 2020 is shaping up to be an excellent year. I’m just ready for Daytona to get here as soon as possible!”

Snider most recently wrapped up a full season competing in the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, where he finished fifth in the season long championship standings. The Charlotte, North Carolina-native also made select NASCAR Truck Series starts in 2019 and is a former race winner in the ARCA Menards Series, scoring the victory at Toledo Speedway in 2016 in his first ever ARCA start.

“We’re proud to be joining forces with Myatt and TaxSlayer during the 2020 season,” said Richard Childress, chairman and CEO of Richard Childress Racing. “Both Myatt and TaxSlayer are family-focused, with Myatt’s family being involved in racing and TaxSlayer being a family-owned tax and financial technology company. Those values fit perfectly with ours, and I think will help guide all of us to on and off-track success next season.”
