RILEY HERBST, No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang — Finished 8th

“It was a good day. We got another top-10 so that is good. We just struggled with speed a little bit and we had some struggles on pit stops which put is back a few times. We were able to work our way back up inside the top-10 though, so that is good. We will take this and work on some things for Charlotte.”

    Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

    • Riley Herbst comes into Saturday’s SRS Distribution 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth riding a wave of front-running consistency. The driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) is on a five-race top-10 streak, punctuated by a season-best third-place finish in the Xfinity Series’ most recent race May 7 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway. It was his eighth top-10 in the 11 races run this season – tying Herbst for the second-most top-10s this year with fellow Las Vegas-native Noah Gragson – and it has Herbst eighth in the championship standings, 54 points above the top-12 playoff cutline.

    • The Xfinity Series was off last weekend, but Herbst was still on. The 23-year-old competed in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City. Herbst wheeled the No. 17 Monster Energy Ford F-150 for David Gilliland Racing (DGR) to a seventh-place starting spot and a 12th-place finish as he furthered his experience on intermediate-style ovals.

    • Prior to the Xfinity Series off weekend, racing worlds collided. Herbst, along with his NASCAR Cup Series teammates Chase Briscoe and Cole Custer, spent the day with Haas F1 Team drivers Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher. In a day of speed and fun on the Ford Performance Racing School road course at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, all the drivers were able to get behind the wheel and give rides to Haas Automation customers. F1 Digital released a video recap of the day on their social channels earlier this week.

    • The SRS Distribution 250 will mark Herbst’s 88th career Xfinity Series start and his fifth at Texas. Herbst’s best finish at Texas is a pair of 12th-place drives, both of which were earned last year in the series’ two stops at Texas.

    • SHR has one Xfinity Series win at Texas. Cole Custer delivered the victory in November 2018, beating Tyler Reddick by .162 of a second.

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

There was no weekend off for you. While the rest of the Xfinity Series took a break, you were wheeling the No. 17 Monster Energy Ford F-150 for David Gilliland Racing (DGR) at Kansas. What did you learn by running that race?

“You learn a lot. I was able to drive that truck back at Daytona, and I think there’s a good bit that you can learn and carry over to the Xfinity Series. I’m thankful to DGR for giving me the opportunity to learn. No matter what, it’s more seat time and a way to gain more experience. I’m a big fan of Kansas, and it’s also an intermediate track, which we’ll run this weekend in Texas. While they’re different tracks, I can learn as a driver. In my career, I’ve had limited track time with practice and qualifying going away in 2020, so I’ll take what I can get.”

What are your expectations for Saturday’s race?

“We’re focused on ourselves, and that’s trying to get the No. 98 Monster Energy team to victory lane. Right now, we’re focused on trying to bring the best racecar to Texas and I’m focused on being the most prepared that I can be as a driver. Hopefully, we can lead some laps, run up front, and win some stages. Last year, we were decent there, but struggled to find speed. We’re gathering all of our notes, going to the simulator, and preparing for this race. The plan is to have a solid run at Texas and go for the win, but we’re also preparing for Charlotte next week, which is one of my favorite tracks.”

You’re sort of flying under the radar this year despite a strong start to the season with eight top-10s and being eighth in points. How are you feeling about the team’s performance so far as you’re currently on a five-race top-10 streak?

“The goal this season was always to be consistent. Momentum is everything. It was tough last year, and we knew that if we did what we were supposed to do, we would finish decently. We’re way more consistent, and being able to finish has been huge for this No. 98 Monster Energy team. It allows us to keep moving forward and progressing. Ultimately, we’re moving toward the goal of winning races.”

It will be my first time driving this Next Gen car on a mile-and-a-half racetrack, so it will be interesting to get a feel for these kinds of tracks. I’m also looking forward to having Andy’s Frozen Custard back with us at Texas with their newest flavor of custard featured on the car – the All-Star Jackhammer!” – AJ Allmendinger on the All-Star Race

Justin Haley, No. 31 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Camaro ZL1

    SRS Distribution 250
    Texas Motor Speedway
    NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS)
    Saturday, May 21 at 1:30 p.m. ET on FS1

Kaulig Racing earned one top five and nine top-10 finishes in 2022
The team has an average finish of 14.5 and 88 laps led at Texas Motor Speedway
Dating back to the 2020 season opener, Kaulig Racing has finished at least one car in the top 10 in 76 of the last 77 NXS races (35-consecutive races with at least one top-10 finish), which is the longest active streak of any team in the NXS
Kaulig Racing has led 190 laps in the 2022 NXS season so far
    Allmendinger: 142 laps
    Hemric: 48 laps

Landon Cassill, No. 10 Voyager Chevrolet

Landon Cassill has an average finish of 26.4 and has led one lap at Texas Motor Speedway across 10 starts

“Texas is one of my favorite markets and one of the most unique intermediate tracks we go to. Even though it’s just under a mile-and-a-half in size, it’s one of the fastest tracks we go to, and one of the most challenging. Survival will be key this week.” – Landon Cassill on Texas Motor Speedway

Daniel Hemric, No. 11 Cirkul Chevrolet

Daniel Hemric has earned three top fives, four top 10s and has an average finish of 10.8 at Texas Motor Speedway across six starts
He has led 149 laps at Texas

“I’ve always enjoyed racing at Texas. It’s one of the more challenging tracks for teams as far as how differently both ends of the racetrack flow. It’s hard to be really good at both ends without compromising too much lap time. That can determine whether you win or lose the race. We just have to focus on things that are most important to our race team. Hopefully practice will give us a good baseline so we can move in right direction as a team to build on these types of tracks.” – Daniel Hemric on Texas Motor Speedway

AJ Allmendinger, No. 16 Action Industries Chevrolet

    • AJ Allmendinger has won in four consecutive NXS seasons
    • He has an average finish of 6.0 at Texas Motor Speedway across two starts and has led 21 laps
    • Allmendinger is the only driver in the NXS with a top-10 finish in all 11 races in 2022

    Driver Quotes

“This Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions team is on quite a roll as of late. The guys have been bringing me a great car each week and the results are really showing. We’ve been in the top five a lot lately and have been putting together great points days. If we can keep doing that then there’s no reason this team can’t be in Victory Lane soon.” – Sam Mayer

“We came really close last year here in Texas with this No. 7 team and hopefully we can replicate that same success again this weekend. Texas has been a good track for us the last couple of times we’ve been here and I have all the confidence that we will have that same speed when we hit the track for practice on Friday with our hellowater Chevrolet.” – Justin Allgaier

“Texas is a track I don’t have much experience at but I know Bummy (Mike Bumgarner, crew chief) and this entire Jarrett team will unload with a fast car right off the truck. It’s the first race for everyone at Jarrett on the No. 8 and I know a bunch of them are coming, so hopefully we can show them a great time in Victory Lane this weekend.” – Josh Berry

“This Bass Pro Shops team has been really strong lately, and we’ve got some clear momentum going. Luke Lambert and the guys on the crew have been giving me great Camaros and we’re taking advantage of it. We’ve come close at Texas in the past, and I’d like nothing better than to take that next step this weekend and get another victory for our No. 9 team.” – Noah Gragson

“I’m looking forward to being back with JRM. It’s been since 2017 since I raced for them. It’s going to be cool to work with some of the guys again that I knew over there from that year and I’m excited to work with Jason (Stockert, crew chief). Hopefully I’ll be able to get my bearings in an Xfinity car again and get the feel for it quickly.” – William Byron

“This isn’t the best car we’ve brought to the racetrack unloading after practice. But we just kept after it all day. Some great strategy from this No. 31 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevy team. We had a good restart there at the end and we just kind of hung on. We didn’t have a third-place car, but it’s a great finish. This was my best Cup finish besides that win. To do it here at Darlington (Raceway), to finish third, it’s pretty special. It was a good run. We’ll take this to next week and see what we can do at Kansas (Speedway).” – Justin Haley

Sheldon Creed and the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet Show Speed Before Early Race Exit at Darlington Raceway

    Finish: 38th
    Start: 10th
    Points: 15th

“I’ve always loved Darlington Raceway so we really thought this was the weekend our luck would turn around in the Whelen Chevrolet. I’ve won two NASCAR Truck Series races here and we started off the weekend great. We didn’t get a chance to qualify, but we were pretty good in practice. Our car was driving really well at the start of the race but we had to retire early with a mechanical issue. It’s a bummer but we’ll regroup and come back strong at Texas Motor Speedway.” -Sheldon Creed

Austin Hill and the No. 21 Bennett Transportation & Logistics Team

    Finish: 9th
    Start: 12th
    Points: 10th

“I feel like we had some positives today at Darlington Raceway in our Bennett Transportation and Logistics Chevrolet. The biggest issue we faced was managing the tires because we were sliding the front tires when it fired off. I didn’t want to completely burn the fronts off so I couldn’t push it as hard as I wanted to on a restart. It was a lot easier to lose positions because I didn’t want to hurt the front end. We kept working on it and kept getting it better all day. On one of the stops, we got the rear out of the racetrack too much. I struggled in Turns 3 and 4 trying to run the wall. I’ve always ran the bottom and I couldn’t get comfortable running right up against the fence in 3 and 4. We’re going to keep working at it and try to get a little better and running the fence. All in all, it was a solid day but it’s still a little frustrating because you want to win races, so we still have some work to do.” -Austin Hill

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK, No. 26 Stillhouse Vodka Toyota GR Supra, Sam Hunt Racing

    Finishing Position: 4th

How do you feel about your race today and another top-five finish for Sam Hunt Racing?

“We unloaded yesterday and had a really fast Stillhouse 1111 Toyota GR Supra. This Sam Hunt Racing machine was quick. All the guys gave me a great car here. Had to start back because we didn’t get to qualify and we were able to get into the top-10 I think in the first stage, made some adjustments, got it better. And then I thought we were going to have a shot at the win there until the caution came out and lost a few spots on pit road there. The pit crew did awesome for not running up run every week and maintaining most of the time. So shout out to the Sam Hunt Racing guys. I think that’s three or four or five starts in this car and I think three out of the five are top five finishes so pretty proud of everyone in the organization.”

After two strong races at Darlington, what does this do for your overall momentum?

“I feel like it’s good no matter what series you’re running in. I feel like the XFINITY car can translate over to the truck and truck and translate over to the XFINITY car and I feel like I learned a lot last night in the truck race. Had a really good Toyota Tundra TRD PRO and that carried over into today. Our Toyota GR Supra was really fast. Just needed track position to start off. We battled our way through the field and made the right adjustments I felt like and had a shot there until the caution came out and just lined up wrong. Chose restarts wrong but we’ll learn from it and now we’ll go race I think seven or eight more weeks straight in the truck series trying to pick up some more wins.”

BRANDON JONES, No. 19 Menards/TurtleWax Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 7th

How was your race today overall?

“Yesterday we were pretty snug in practice and then we fired off today really loose so I know we didn’t do much different and the weather was kind of similar so I don’t know where it all kind of switched for us today. But we rebounded I think and we still stayed in the fight pretty well there and continue to at least keep pushing back up through there kind of early on. We’d fall back and then we’d find a little speed there. So all in all, it wasn’t terrible for sure. I think that we can definitely continue to build on this and keep going here and momentum is still kind of strong in my opinion. Even after Dover and everything today, I feel like we’re still kind of in the right direction as far as how fast we’ve been here in the past couple weeks. So looking forward to many more here in the next couple of weeks.”

RILEY HERBST, No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang – HOW SOLID WAS THIS CAR TODAY? “I thought it was fairly good from spring last year we finished probably a lap down in 19th, so to come here and finish third and to honestly have a top-five car is just a testament to Stewart-Haas Racing and everyone at Ford Performance and Monster Energy. This wasn’t one of my favorite racetracks, and I still think we need about a tenth a lap to try and win these races here in Darlington, but we’re getting closer and it’s good.”

ANOTHER SOLID FINISH. “Yeah, it was good. We were pretty good the first stage. The second stage we were even better and then I messed up on the restart and spun the tires and finished the second stage in ninth or tenth. I was pretty bummed out about that and luckily we were able to get our track position back to kind of where we ran all day in the fourth or fifth spot and ended up third. Another top five and another top 10 is just what we need – consistency – and I think we’re doing a pretty good job.”

YOU GOT A LOT OF STAGE POINTS TODAY. “I think it was good. Obviously, I’m still bummed because I had an opportunity to get two fifths or a fifth and a sixth and now I had a fifth and a ninth, so that’s four points there I kind of gave up. Obviously, it’s bad to look back on, but four points is four points.”

WHAT ABOUT COMING TO DARLINGTON AND THIS RACE. IS IT A LITTLE SCARY? “I wouldn’t say scared, but it hasn’t been one of my best tracks recently just because I’ve struggled on how hard it is to race here, so good runs like this help. Hopefully, we can have another one in the fall.”

YOU WERE ON THE INSIDE OF ROW 2 ON THE FINAL RESTART. WHAT WAS YOUR PLAN? “I was just thinking not to spin my tires and I did spin my tires. I had to gather it back up and get going down the back straightaway and ultimately we ended up where we should have ended up – third. All in all, pretty good.”
