    Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

    • Riley Herbst and Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway are an appropriate pair. Herbst is the driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing and Dover is best known as the “Monster Mile”. At a track that can chew up and spit out even the most seasoned racers, Herbst has acquitted himself well on the concrete-clad, 1-mile oval. In four career NASCAR Xfinity Series starts at Dover, Herbst has scored two top-10 finishes with a best result of sixth on Aug. 22, 2020. He has never finished outside the top-20.

    • Herbst’s solid runs at the Monster Mile aren’t confined to the Xfinity Series. He also has two starts at Dover in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. In the 2016 and 2017 races, Herbst finished eighth and seventh, respectively.

    • Herbst comes into Dover having finished among the top-10 in four of his last five Xfinity Series races, including a run of three straight. The 23-year-old racer from Las Vegas finished seventh in the series’ prior race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway to secure his sixth top-10 in the nine races run this season. He is 10th in the championship standings as he heads into the 10th race of the season.

    • The A-Game 200 will mark Herbst’s 86th career Xfinity Series start. His resume includes 12 top-fives and 40 top-10s. His best finish is second, earned twice – in February 2020 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, and July 2020 at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.

    • While still seeking his first Xfinity Series win, Herbst is driving for an Xfinity Series winner. Stewart-Haas Racing owns two Xfinity Series victories at Dover – October 2019 with Cole Custer and August 2020 with Chase Briscoe.

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

You had a solid weekend at Talladega with a seventh-place finish. With six top-10s in the nine races run this year, do you feel like you’re in a better position at this point in the season than you were last year?

“We’re in a better spot this year over last year, for sure. Richard (Boswell, crew chief) and I talked about it at the beginning of the season – that we needed to be consistent this year, and that’s just what we’re doing. I feel like we had a shot there to win at Talladega, but in the scramble at the end, it didn’t work out in our favor. Happy to come home with a top-10, still. Our consistency and hard work will pay off, though. This No. 98 Monster Energy team is a winning team.”

Dover is best known as the Monster Mile. What are your thoughts heading into such a difficult and unpredictable track?

“Dover’s a cool track, but it’s also really tough. You have to be confident there and be comfortable with your car. We got into some trouble there last year with contact early on, but I’ve had good runs there in the past. Hopefully, we can stay out of trouble and be there at the end of it this year.”

Monster Energy has been a big part of your career and you have a great relationship with them. What does it mean to have that support and network from such a big company?

“I’m grateful for my relationship with them and for their support. I was fortunate enough to go to Monster Energy’s 20th birthday party a few weeks ago out on the West Coast. It was so cool to see all of the people from the company and other Monster Energy athletes. Honestly, it’s an honor to be a part of that brand and to sport that logo. It’s something that I won’t take for granted. I’m fortunate to be in the position that I’m in and Monster Energy is my family, for sure. I’m happy to have them on the car again this season and hopefully we can get them to victory lane.”

Allgaier, JRM’s winningest driver, currently ranks sixth in the NXS standings heading into this weekend’s event at Dover Motor Speedway. Last season, Allgaier earned finishes of seventh and fourth in the two primary races for hellowater at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Watkins Glen International.

  • Parker Retzlaff Hopes Dover Experience Pays Off in Xfinity Series Rumble

Parker Retzlaff Hopes Dover Experience Pays Off in Xfinity Series Rumble

DOVER, Del.: Set to make his fourth NASCAR Xfinity Series start of the season this weekend at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway, thriving rookie Parker Retzlaff is hopeful that his prior experience at the “Monster Mile” will reward his RSS Racing team with his second top-10 finish of the season.

Retzlaff returns to the seat of the No. 38 Ponsse Ford Mustang after a brief three-week hiatus but on the heels of a solid 12th place finish in his Martinsville (Va.) Speedway debut on April 8th.

After qualifying 20th for the Call 811 Before You Dig 250 at the famed 0.526-mile paperclip, Retzlaff exercised extreme patience throughout the race and continued to showcase his short track skills and put himself in position for his second straight top-10 finish of the year.

However, an array of late-race cautions jumbled the field and despite his best efforts, Retzlaff settled for 12th after a grueling night of beating and banging under the beaming Virginia lights.

“I’m still a little disappointed that we finished 12th at Martinsville so that just gets me fired up thinking about Dover Motor Speedway this weekend,” said Retzlaff. “I cannot thank everyone for RSS Racing enough for giving me a fast No. 38 Ponsse Ford Mustang.

“Historically, Martinsville has always been a tough place to pass and the Xfinity race was no different. I thought we were in a good place, but there was just so much chaos at the end of the race and we finished 12th. Not what we wanted, but it wasn’t terrible either.”

Eyeing to keep his name in the spotlight, the Rhinelander, Wisc. native returns to the famed Dover race track hoping his prior two ARCA Menards Series East starts at the 1.0-mile facility will pay dividends in Saturday afternoon’s A-Game 200.

In his two previous starts in 2020 and 2021 respectively, he earned a respectable seventh-place finish in his track debut and finished 12th last spring.

“I love everything about Dover,” added Retzlaff. “It is a very demanding race track and it’s a track where hitting your marks every lap is crucial to execution. Passing can be tough, but it’s doable and from time to time, you can see a stretch of long green flag runs. I’m not sure what to expect on Saturday afternoon, but our RSS Racing should be ready for any challenges that come our way.

“I know track position is going to be super important but I’m hopeful that my two prior races in ARCA East will be beneficial from a driver’s perspective. I didn’t have any prior experience at Richmond or Martinsville, so it took some time to get up to speed with those tracks, but at Dover, we should be able to go hard in practice and get a good baseline for qualifying and then the race.”

Retzlaff’s goals for his fourth of 10 Xfinity Series races with the Sugar Hill, Ga.-based team is to better his 10th place finish from Richmond and inch closer to a top-five performance.

“Finishing strong is what is going to keep our momentum rolling,” continued Retzlaff. “Following Dover, I won’t be back in an Xfinity car until Nashville in June – almost two months so it’s important to have a good finish – hopefully better than Richmond so we can keep some momentum on our side and inch closer to a top-five if not this weekend than maybe at Nashville.”

Ponsse, which manufactures and markets a range of forestry vehicles and machineries such as forwarders and harvesters will return as the primary partner of Retzlaff’s No. 38 Ford Mustang for the 200-mile race.

In addition to Ponsse, Eco-Tracks, Grille Adz, Iron Horse Loggers, Northern Chill Spring Water and Pewag will serve as associate marketing partners for the 10th Xfinity Series race of the season.

“I feel very fortunate to be able to have the support of Ponsse, Eco-Tracks, Northern Chill Spring Water and our other partners not only for Dover this weekend but for the 2022 season overall,” explained Retzlaff.

“Without them, I would not be competing in the Xfinity Series this year. My goal is to go out there and just stick to the same goals we’ve had all season. We want to be better than we unloaded and go forward during the race.

“Hopefully, on Saturday afternoon, we can do a little better than 10th at the checkered flag.”

Retzlaff, 18, graduated to the Xfinity Series in 2022 after spending the last two years competing in the ARCA Menards Series East tour where in 12 starts, the Rhinelander, Wisc. native delivered one top-five and nine top-10 finishes, including a career-best fourth-place finish in June at Southern National Motorsports Park (SNMP).

In addition to Dover, Retzlaff will drive an RSS Racing entry at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway, Pocono (Pa.) Raceway, Kansas Speedway, Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway and the season finale at Phoenix (Ariz.) Raceway on Sat., Nov. 5, 2022.

Retzlaff added, “I feel like I’ve raced the others on the track with respect and race them how I liked to be raced. Dover has some tight quarters, but I would like to continue building on that respect with my peers and teammates and hope it will be mutual with them. I’m just looking forward to getting to Dover and getting to work.”

Outside of the cockpit, Retzlaff is an accomplished iRacer with 1,615 poles, 1,653 wins, 3,291 top-five and more than 68,800 laps led.

He is also the rookie driver of the No. 6 KOHLER Generators Ford Mustang for Roush Fenway Keselowski (RFK) Racing in the eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series.

    Driver Quotes

“Dover is one of just a couple of tracks that I haven’t been to yet in the Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions No. 1 car, but we have been putting in a lot of sim time to make sure I am ready for this weekend. I ran the Truck and ARCA car here back in 2020 and won the ARCA race so that gives me a little extra confidence heading into a pretty difficult track. I know restarts are going to be tricky, so if we can stay clean we may be contending for the win at the end of the day.” – Sam Mayer

“I can’t wait to get to Dover this weekend with our No. 7 team. We’ve been really strong there the last couple of years and I feel extremely confident that we are going to pick up right where we left off when we hit the track for practice on Friday. Hopefully we can have a solid, smooth weekend and be right where we need to be come race time to fight for the win. I’m ready to go.” – Justin Allgaier

“We had a really strong run last year in Dover and almost came away with the win but fell just short. We did win the $100k and helped JRM sweep the Dash 4 Cash so that was exciting. The last month or so we haven’t had any luck go our way, so we need to turn that around and it starts this weekend for our Tire Pros team. We’ve been fast but the results don’t show it.” – Josh Berry

“Dover is one of those tracks where we have always had good speed but we just couldn’t capitalize. We’ve been near the front every time we have been here but things just never went our way. This Bass Pro Shops/TrueTimber/Black Rifle Coffee team is coming off a strong run that put us in Victory Lane last weekend so our confidence is high and we are going to ride that momentum into Dover this weekend.” – Noah Gragson

Monster Energy Driver Earns Sixth Top-10 of 2022
    Date: Saturday, April 23
    Event: Ag-Pro 300 (Round 9 of 33)
    Series: NASCAR Xfinity Series
Location: Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway (2.66-mile oval)
Format: 113 laps, broken into three stages (25 laps/25 laps/63 laps)
    Start/Finish: 20th / 7th (Running, completed 121 of 121 laps)
Point Standing: 10th (242 points, 142 out of first)
Note: Race extended eight laps past its scheduled 113-lap distance due to a green-white-checkered finish.

Race Winner: Noah Gragson of JR Motorsports (Chevrolet)
Stage 1 Winner: Josh Berry of JR Motorsports (Chevrolet)
Stage 2 Winner: Justin Allgaier of JR Motorsports (Chevrolet)

    Overview:

Riley Herbst employed a smart and savvy drive to finish seventh in the Ag-Pro 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race Saturday at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. The driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) dropped to the back of the 38-car field for an unapproved adjustment prior to the start, but Herbst wasted no time in working his way toward the front, hovering in or near the top-10. In the final stage, crew chief Richard Boswell made a strategy call on lap 69 while the race was under caution to pit Herbst for fuel only, which earned him the fifth-place starting spot when the race returned to green on lap 72. As the race made its way toward completion, Herbst endured three overtime restarts and avoided multiple wrecks to bring home his sixth top-10 of the season.

Riley Herbst, driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

“It was a frustrating day. We were fast, but I just felt like we were lacking a little power. We would get up to the front and then get shuffled. Then I would work my way back up to the front. We didn’t earn any stage points. We had a shot to win there at the end, but I don’t know. We just have to take what we can get. It was important that we did finish this race and get points to move on to Dover, which hasn’t been my best track. We’ll go to Dover and try to capitalize there.”

    Notes:

    ● This was Herbst’s third straight top-10. He finished fifth April 2 at Richmond (Va.) Raceway and sixth April 8 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

    ● Noah Gragson won the Ag-Pro 300 to score his seventh career Xfinity Series victory, his second of the season and his first at Talladega. His margin over second-place Jeffrey Earnhardt was .131 of a second.

    ● There were 10 caution periods for a total of 39 laps.

    ● Twenty of the 38 drivers in the race finished on the lead lap.

    ● AJ Allmendinger remains the championship leader after Talladega with a 40-point advantage over second-place Gragson.

    Next Up:

The next event on the NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule is the A-Game 200 on April 30 at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway. The race starts at 1:30 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by FS1 and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Sheldon Creed and the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet Run Strong at Talladega Superspeedway Before Late-Race Incident

    Finish: 24th
    Start: 4th
    Points: 14th

“We had a fast Whelen Chevrolet at Talladega Superspeedway. We ran well today and were in contention until the crash that took us out of the race early. I was three or four-wide in the middle and our Whelen Chevrolet just got hooked in the right-rear. I don’t know what they were doing outside of me; I couldn’t see ‘em. The next thing I knew I was getting hooked straight into the fence. I made some mistakes early in the race and learned from them. I thought I did a lot of the right things at the end to put myself in contention. I missed the block off of Turn 2 and back I went. It’s unfortunate but that’s part of speedway racing.” -Sheldon Creed

    Finish: 2nd
    Start: 1st
    Points: N/A

“I think it’s mission accomplished coming here to Talladega Superspeedway in Richard Childress Racing’s No. 3 ForeverLawn Chevrolet. We wanted to sit on the pole and win this thing and fell short by one spot. I knew on that last restart we had a shot. I just didn’t know how it was going to play out. I knew it was going to break apart and I knew we had some help from out back. I didn’t know if it was going to be enough to get us to second, but I knew we had a shot. We just didn’t have anybody close enough out back to create a run to get to his back bumper. I’m just very thankful for ForeverLawn and everyone that’s given me this opportunity. From the word go Larry McReynolds immersed himself at RCR and figured out how they go about a race weekend and how he was going to come in and be successful. This has been a dream of mine for years.” -Jeffrey Earnhardt

Austin Hill and the No. 21 Bennett Transportation & Logistics Chevrolet Lead Laps at Talladega Superspeedway Before Late-Race Wreck Eliminates Them from Contention

    Finish: 27th
    Start: 2nd
    Points: 9th

“We were having a solid day in our Bennett Transportation and Logistics Chevy Camaro. RCR brought a bad fast car to the racetrack. I couldn’t keep the No. 27 car with me on that restart for whatever reason. I don’t know if his car wasn’t good enough or what the deal was there. I kept trying to drag back to him and that allowed the No. 7 car to clear me on the top and the No. 1 car was about to clear me. I guess the 1 just got hit from behind, got out of shape and then he hit us in the right-front. Once he did, we were just along for the ride. I don’t know if I could have done anything different to save it. I was trying to get turned back around to the right so I kind of got off the brakes a little bit to try to get turned to the right and by the time I got turned I hit driver’s side on the inside wall. I’ll have to go back and look at it to see if I could have done something different to save the car. You can have the best car all day and dominate and end up with nothing to show for it. It’s just tough when you run up front all day and that happens.” -Austin Hill

    FORD FINISHING RESULTS
    5th – Ryan Sieg
    7th – Riley Herbst
    8th – Joe Graf Jr.
    14th – Shane Lee
    16th – Joey Gase
    18th – Kyle Sieg
    33rd – David Starr

Riley Herbst, No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang — Finished 7th

“It was a frustrating day. We were fast but I just feel like we were lacking a little power. We would get up to the front and then get shuffled. Then I would work my way back up to the front. We didn’t earn any stage points. We had a shot to win there at the end but I don’t know. We just gotta take what we can get. It was important that we did finish this race and get points to move on to Dover which hasn’t been my best track. We will go to Dover and try to capitalize there.”

Ryan Sieg, No. 38 A-GAME Ford Mustang — Finished 5th

“We had great Roush Yates power. I gotta thank Doug. He put power under the hood this weekend and that is the big thing. Our A-GAME Ford was fast all day. We just didn’t really have anyone to work with. It is tough to try to stay up front when you try to go to the front to get the lead and nobody wants to work with you. I just had to do what I did at the end and we ended up fifth.”

WHAT ABOUT THAT SAVE ON THE LAST LAP? “Yeah, I had to do it. I saw them coming and I was trying to watch the outside and slipped up and he got underneath me. I went to block it and it was a pretty wild save right there. I thought I was wrecked. I just dove the hell out of it and it was just a great Ford Performance Mustang we had today and great for us to come out of here with a fifth. I gotta thank A-GAME and Doug Yates and Stewart-Haas. It was a great day to come home fifth.”

    TOYOTA QUOTES

TY GIBBS, No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 35th

    Ty, what happened?

“I just got a big run by the 38 (Ryan Sieg) and I got kind of out of shape and came back down and caught the 11 (Daniel Hemric). Sorry for everyone involved. It was a sucky deal. We had a very fast Monster Energy Toyota GR Supra. I was proud of my guys. We struggled a little bit in Daytona and we came back here and were fast. We picked up a lot. It was a pretty good hit, but I’m okay. Hopefully we get a Supra in victory lane.”

CHANDLER SMITH, No. 26 Charge Me Toyota GR Supra, Sam Hunt Racing

    Finishing Position: 38th

What did you see out there, Chandler?

“We had it avoided there for a minute and then the 8 (Josh Berry) started coming back across and just the way that I was angled I was going to either hit him with my left front or I had to get on my brakes and go to the right quick enough and once I did, I just got sideways and couldn’t save it. It sucks. I hate it for this Sam Hunt Racing Charge Me group. We were having a strong showing for sure. We showed good speed and everything in our Supra. It kind of is what it is. It’s Talladega.”

    News and Notes:

    • Practice; For the Talladega Superspeedway Spring race the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) will receive no practice time for Saturday’s Ag-Pro 300.

    – Starting Position; With no practice scheduled teams would move directly into qualifying on Friday afternoon after technical inspection to determine the starting order for Saturday’s Ag-Pro 300. In 2022, superspeedway qualifying for the NXS would consist of a two rounds of single car single lap qualifying with the 10 fastest cars in Round 1 moving on to Round 2 to determine the starting order of the Top-10. Rolling off 23rd in Round 1, Snider would complete a lap of 53.628 at 178.563 ranking 31st overall in Round 1 failing to qualify for Round 2. After the completion of qualifying the Jordan Anderson Racing Bommarito Autosport TaxSlayer Chevrolet No. 31 will start 31st on the inside of row 16 for Saturday’s Ag-Pro 300.

    – Talladega Superspeedway Stats; Saturday’s NXS Ag-Pro 300 will mark Snider’s fifth NXS start at Talladega Superspeedway. In April of 2020, Snider would make his NXS debut at the 2.66-mile Alabama superspeedway earning himself a 27rd place finish after lagging towards the back of the field majority of the race and would fall victim to getting caught up in an accident caused by someone else getting inpatient at the front. The Fall race of 2020 would see Snider see much of the same happen as he would run mid-pack the entire race until a spinning car coming up track on the final lap would end his day resulting in 26th place finish. 2021, would see Snider move to a new team and put himself in contention in the Spring race running inside the Top-10 the entire race having a shot to win on the final lap running in fifth when the caution flag would come out. Reverting back to the previous timing loop Snider would be scored in the 9th position in the final run down. The Fall race of 2021 would see Snider running up front the entire race before getting caught up in the big one with 26 to go resulting in a disappointing 31st place finish after having a fast car all day. In four starts at Talladega Superspeedway Snider holds an average finish of 23.3. Snider has also made two starts in NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) in 2017 & 2018 earning himself a second and third place finish holding an average finish of 2.5.
