No. 22 Menards/Richmond Ford Mustang – Austin Cindric

    Start: 9th
    Stage 1: 7th
    Stage 2: 4th
    Finish: 2nd
    Status: Running
    Laps Completed: 306/306
    Laps Led: 75
Driver Point Standings (ahead of second): 1st (+0)

    Notes:

    • Austin Cindric started ninth and finished second while crashing just past the start finish line in a wild NASCAR Overtime on Friday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. Cindric led 75 laps on his way to the second-place finish in the Food City 300 and ended the regular season with the No. 22 Menards/Richmond Ford Mustang team earning another 10 playoff points to use in their Championship quest, finishing second in the regular season standings. The team enters the first NASCAR XFINITY Playoff race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway next Saturday as the number one seed.
    • In the early laps of the race, Cindric drove the No. 22 Menards/Richmond Ford Mustang into the top-five, reaching the fourth position prior to the lap 40 competition caution. During the run, the driver reported that the handling of his Mustang was building slightly free on corner entry. Cindric would later get trapped behind a car on the inside line on a restart, dropping him to the seventh position at the end of Stage 1. Crew chief Brian Wilson adjusted on the No. 22 Mustang with air pressure on the stage ending stop, looking to give Cindric additional entry security and center turn.
    • Despite radioing the team that the Mendards/Richmond Mustang was too tight in the opening laps of Stage 2, Cindric quickly found himself racing back inside the top-five. As the stage wore on, Cindric was able to move up, becoming the first car to make good lap times in the second and third lane around the high-banked concrete half-mile. Cindric remained in the top-five, finishing Stage 2 in the fourth position. On the stage ending stop, the team elected to make a trackbar adjustment to help with the No. 22 Menards/Richmond Mustang being too tight on fire-off.
    • With the trackbar adjustment working favorably, Cindric powered to the second position at lap 210 with only 90 laps remaining in the scheduled distance. Cindric would take the lead for the first time of the night at lap 230 before a caution at lap 240 which set up setting up the final stop of the race. The team delivered on a four-tire stop, sending Cindric back to the track with the lead.
    • While leading and lapping cars, Cindric received contact to his left rear, but maintained control of the No. 22 Menards/Richmond Mustang, driving out to a one-second lead and cruising to the win. With only three laps remaining, a caution flag was displayed for a spin in second-place, sending the race to NASCAR Overtime.
    • On the restart, Cindric received heavy left-side contact from eventual race winner AJ Allmendinger and then again from Justin Allgaier. Cindric was able to rally back to the second position, getting inside Allmendinger before the two made contact at the checkered flag. Cindric netted another 10-playoff points with his regular season performance and enters the NASCAR XFINITY Playoffs with 44 total playoff points.

Quote: “Yeah. Absolutely. I’m sure everybody in the grandstands tonight will remember this one. I certainly will. That’s two years in a row in this race that I feel like we should have won. That’s a lot of races in this neon yellow car that I feel like we should have won this year, so really disappointed for Menards, Richmond, Team Penske — all the hard work these guys put in. We put ourselves in position. That’s all you can ask for and I guess that’s short track racing.”

    FORD FINISHING RESULTS
    2nd — Austin Cindric
    3rd — Riley Herbst
    34th — Ryan Sieg

AUSTIN CINDRIC, No. 22 Menards/Richmond Ford Mustang — YOU WILL MAKE HIGHLIGHTS AT BRISTOL FOR YEARS TO COME WITH THAT FINISH. “Yeah.

HOW DO YOU RESET YOUR MINDSET FOR THE PLAYOFFS? “I know how much it means to everybody else to beat us.”

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE FINAL LAP? “What happened on the last lap? The short summary is short track racing. The long summary is a lot of contact. Five-star bodies definitely made their money’s worth today. I’m surprised we were able to not cut a tire down in that situation, but just a lot of hard racing, a lot of guys wanted to win the race. I feel like, and I say with confidence, we were probably the ones that deserved to, but that’s not how these play out with these green-white-checkers and sometimes you’re vulnerable.”

DID YOU HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THAT LAST MOVE OFF OF FOUR OR WAS THAT DESPERATION? “I would say that was the exact same thing AJ did on the bottom of turn four the lap prior, just gassing up out of desperation. I would say it was a bit desperate, but monkey see, monkey do in that situation. Like I said in my TV interview, I don’t want to tear up race cars and can’t say I’m the one that instigated any of that. I had a shot to win. I mean, I’d love to see the margin there of two cars crashing across the finish line, but really close two years in a row.”

WHAT WERE YOU THINKING WHEN YOU NARROWLY MISSED SIEG TRYING TO GET TO PIT ROAD? “I thought that was really close. The 10 car had a tire go down. The 39 had a problem. I was just waiting for my caution. When we got to three to go I thought we were in a decent spot, but I’ve had a couple of these run green while I’ve been leading and I consider myself lucky every time it does and today it didn’t happen.”

DO THE RULES OF ENGAGEMENT WITH AJ CHANGE NOW AFTER TONIGHT? “Yes and no. I feel like at a track like this it’s probably more pliable, but it doesn’t surprise me. That’s how AJ races. That’s how he’s always raced. He’s usually walked that fine line no matter what position he’s running on the racetrack. I respect him for it — not for tonight — but I respect him for it in general. He’s hungry. I think that’s proof. Not to sound arrogant, but how bad guys want to win, how bad guys want to beat us. We obviously did the right adjustments tonight and got ahead and stayed ahead of the track and I’m really proud of that and some nights that’s all you can do.”

IT’S A BIG POINT SWING. DO YOU FEEL THAT PLAYED INTO IT AT ALL? “Absolutely. You can look at it from a different perspective that I would rather AJ win than anybody else because I’d rather have two cars have the most playoff points than to be equally distributed throughout the field because then that devalues mine, so from that perspective, I don’t mind him winning as long as I’m ahead. That’s the caveat there.”

WILL YOU CHAT WITH HIM ABOUT THIS? “The funny thing is we fly on the same plane as Kaulig, so it’s kind of been funny the whole year. They sit in the front of the plane. They make us sit in the back of the plane, so I get to have some snarky comment every time I walk by AJ when we walk on the plane, so, if he doesn’t talk to me by then I’m sure I’ll hear something on Friday morning.”

YOU TOOK THE OUTSIDE AND ALLGAIER OPTED TO GO BEHIND YOU. WHAT WERE YOUR THOUGHTS WHEN YOU SAW THAT HAPPEN? “I actually liked it because I thought Allgaier was the better car and I thought that was gonna trap AJ on the bottom, but obviously contact there off of four really screwed my run. I did have a point that I was clear, but the moment I pull down with a tight clear like that all AJ is gonna do release the brake and run into the back of me, so, like I said, two guys who both wanted to win the race really bad.”

DO YOU KNOW YOUR SNARKY COMMENT YET BEFORE GETTING ON THE PLANE? “I usually try to think of my rebuttal because he usually gets the first word and the last word, and I try to shut him up before he gets the last word.”

RILEY HERBST, No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang — THAT WAS A WILD FINISH. “Yeah, that was fun. A lot of people using their bumpers out here tonight and kind of what I expected just because it’s the regular season cutoff and playoff points are on the line. It got aggressive, but it was cool. We kept ourselves in position. Richard Boswell and the 98 team gave us a really good strategy and a really good car. Thank you to Monster Energy and Ford Performance. Man, I’m so excited to go home next week and try to go race for a championship.”

HOW SPECIAL WILL IT BE TO START THE PLAYOFFS AT YOUR HOME TRACK? “It’s gonna be fun. I’ve been looking forward to going home for a long time and I think we can win at home next week and, like I said, I’m excited. We’re going to race for a championship.”

WHAT ABOUT THE FINAL RESTART? “Once the caution came and the overtime happened I knew it was gonna be kind of hectic. It’s just a product of Bristol. People got aggressive. Everybody wants to win at this place. This place is awesome. It was ten tenths there the last few laps and all hell kind of broke loose, but we were able to come away third and we’ll take it headed to Las Vegas.”

THOUGHTS ON LAS VEGAS NEXT WEEK? “We’re going to back to my home, Las Vegas, to try to go win and move to the Round of 8. We’re very capable of winning and we’re ready to go do it.”

    TOYOTA QUOTES

BRANDON JONES, No. 19 YeeYee Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 5th

How do you feel about the race and your momentum heading into the Playoffs?

“This is exactly what we need to do truthfully is just have a good, solid run. We had decent stages – I think we finished eighth in both stages. There at the end, you never know what’s going to happen. I’ve been part of a lot of these races where these late-race restarts cause a lot of chaos and you can come and sneak in. I didn’t know what to expect, but that was my best shot at trying to come in here and win this race. Awesome day for YeeYee, I know they had a big deal setup in the fan zone so that was super cool for them so it was great to get them a top-five although I think we should be grateful for a top-five, we’re still hunting for that win. It’s awesome to go into the Playoffs with some momentum and we’ve got some good tracks coming up. Vegas is really good for us and looking forward to getting there.”

DANIEL HEMRIC, No. 18 Poppy Bank Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 10th

What happened in the closing laps of the race and how was your car tonight?

“A 10th place finish is not at all what this Poppy Bank Toyota Supra team had. We struggled a little bit on pit road all night. We maintained track position – I think the worst we were was second or third under green flag runs and then would lose a few spots on pit road, which is very uncharacteristic of our group. It was one of those nights. I’ve made some mistakes and I’m cleaning it up. Just wish we could have been in the mix there coming to the end. Then somebody got into me coming to two to go and got me out of the groove and that was it. Finally got the ball rolling. First time in a couple weeks that we had one of the fastest cars. That’s all you can ask for. Get my voice healed up and head to Vegas.”

    NASCAR Cup Series
NASCAR Media Zoom | Thursday, September 16, 2021

Austin Cindric, driver of the No. 22 Carshop Ford Mustang in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, comes into this weekend’s regular season finale trailing points leader AJ Allmendinger by five points. Cindric, who is going for his second straight regular season championship, leads the series with five wins this season. He was part of a Q&A session with media earlier today.

AUSTIN CINDRIC, No. 22 Carshop Ford Mustang — WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND? “It’s a pretty fluid weekend for us. It’s the difference of five playoff points. It’s been a tough month in August, almost losing 100 points in two races. That really derailed our hopes or at least our comfort for that. I would say in the Xfinity Series five points, it’s not that it’s harder to make up than in the Cup Series, but the amount of cars that gain stage points realistically anybody you’re gonna be racing against in the Xfinity Series gains stage points, so your gains are cut in half. We really have to have a standout day under normal circumstances for us to be able to clinch this or at least get it to where it’s tied. That’s obviously the mindset, but the best way I can offset those five playoff points as well is to win the race. Either way, it’s a pretty fun weekend ahead — at least for those watching — and it’s been good for our team to kind of get us in playoff mode already. The last three weeks have been all about points and the next seven weeks are gonna be all about points, so I think that’s the underlying positive from all of it is we’re certainly ready for the playoffs come Vegas.”

WHAT ABOUT BEING ABLE TO BOAST ABOUT WINNING THE REGULAR SEASON TITLE. HOW BIG WOULD THAT BE? “I certainly think anytime you can win a race it’s obviously great. I think the regular season championship is one of those things that it means the most to the person who got it, and everybody else it’s kind of shrugged to the side and you take your points and go on. It’s a trophy. It’s still a championship. It still means you gained the most points and performed the best and I think AJ and his team have performed really consistently to minimize their bad days and, unfortunately, we’ve just had a string of bad luck. When we get knocked out of a race it’s usually pretty big and they’re usually able to capitalize. I’m not gonna take anything away from those guys, but certainly we didn’t think a month ago this was gonna be the scenario but that’s racing. I definitely want to give it our best shot and from there it’s back to playoff mode — you’re living every three weeks.”

DOES IT MATTER AT ALL MENTALLY FOR YOUR TEAM WHETHER YOU FINISH FIRST OR SECOND WHEN YOU GO INTO THE PLAYOFFS? “Yes and no. I don’t think it’s gonna make us perform better or worse in the playoffs. Our Vegas car is already built. The guys are working just as hard. We can’t do anymore. I guess maybe that’s what I’m saying. I can’t prepare more. I can’t be faster than I already am in preparing different ways. Those things come naturally and whether I finish first or second in the regular season championship isn’t gonna change how I prepare and how I perform, or how my team performs.”

HOW BENEFICIAL IS IT TO RACE AGAINST AJ FOR A CHAMPIONSHIP? “I think if there’s anything AJ has done this year it’s just that he’s proven he’s not just good on the road courses. I can obviously relate to that, but they’ve been incredibly consistent and he’s certainly pushed me even when he was part-time. It’s great to be against the best and no matter what I’ve raced in in my career, whether it’s been in NASCAR or sports car racing — even having teammates — I look back to when I raced in Pirelli World Challenge in 2016 and I had Alvaro Parente, a McLaren factory driver, a really established guy as my teammate, when I’ve got a rabbit to chase, when I’ve got someone that’s really well-respected in the industry and I’m trying to grow myself as a driver, those are the best situations you can be in. It’s just like having Cup guys come and run Xfinity. It’s a better gauge for Cup owners and Cup drivers to understand what’s coming up next, so it’s been a great opportunity to race against him. I’ve really enjoyed it. I think he and I get along fairly well and at least understand each other, and it’s gonna be a fun next couple of weeks for sure.”

ARE YOU A BELIEVER IN MOMENTUM? “I feel like momentum is more important for everybody else. If a certain team started to win a lot of races, all you start to think about is that certain team winning those races. I think momentum affects those around you more than it does your own team, so I would say yes, but, at the same time, if I’m superstitious about anything I am a believer in the law of averages. I feel like I said that when we were in Daytona and got wrecked out, so I don’t know what that means for our playoffs, but, like I said before, we can’t try any harder than we already are. We can’t bring any better cars. We’re doing a great job and I’m proud of my team. I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish so far this year. We just have to keep going in that direction.”

DID YOU GET TO LOOK AT THE 2022 CUP SCHEDULE THAT WAS ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY? “I think Gateway is a great addition to the schedule. Obviously, the Indy car race there has been really popular and it always seems like they always do a great job promoting that race, so I think a Cup race there will be great as well. I raced there in Trucks. I’ve tested there in the Trucks and I really liked it. I think the only difference since I was there last was they paved the two corners for some tire issues that Indy car was dealing with, but nonetheless I think it’s a fun racetrack and I think it’ll suit our cars well.”

HOW HAS THIS YEAR CHALLENGED YOU? “I think in a lot of different directions. Some of it’s been trying to either increase my level of focus in certain areas or increase my level of attention in certain areas, and by that I mean with the sprinkling of Cup races, trying to maximize those opportunities that anyone in this sport would kill to have. I feel like I’ve done that effectively well probably 80 percent of the time, trying to maintain 100 percent focus on the Xfinity side. That was more of a challenge than I probably anticipated, just going back and forth between the two, and maybe that’s because of how much I already put in. It’s hard to do that two times in a week as far as preparation and as far as what it takes in understanding and learning a new car. On the flip side of all that, I feel like this year has been really good for me to understand and really come down to the small details, whether that’s the advantage of working with the same crew, the same crew chief, and really the same race cars for the last three or four years and working on the small details. A lot of guys don’t have the opportunity to do that in this sport, especially at the level I’m at. In the Cup Series I feel like guys do and that’s why guys are really at the top level is because they do have that continuity and they can focus on the small details and have that notebook. I feel like that’s where I’m at in the Xfinity Series. Some weekends that’s good. Some weekends it’s not. Some weekends it might lead us down the wrong path, but either way I learn from it and I think that’s been a valuable experience because I think my ability to perfect those situations is going to be what sets people apart when you’re racing at the highest level. I feel like having that experience at maybe a lower level at a lower level of competition is pretty valuable to when I do get to that point racing in Cup I can reference that and I can have a process and I can look out for the right details.”

HOW DOES A YOUNGER DRIVER LEARN TO STUDY AND TAKE ALL THAT INFORMATION AND NOT JUST DROWN IN THE DATA THAT’S OUT THERE? “I’ve always been a big believer that one thing that works for one driver isn’t gonna work for the next. Everybody is different, just like anything in life, honestly. The things that work for me might not work for somebody else, but I’ve always gained confidence in knowledge and knowing things that I can apply in real time. I feel like I’ve become a lot more self aware probably in the last six or seven years of my racing career than I was in the first three or four. Some of that is just maturity. Some of that is just getting older, but, nonetheless, that’s where I feel I’ve grown the most and being able to apply that knowledge in real time and being able to apply that knowledge even beforehand and kind of predict what’s happening and be proactive instead of reactive because otherwise that knowledge is useless. If you can’t apply it, it’s useless. Giving myself the things to cue off of and communicating with my team to where things are very uniform and I think building that team dynamic has been important for me. I do have a close relationship with my guys, whether it’s my crew chief, my engineer, my spotter, our road crew — whatever it may be — I feel like those things help me apply those details and that knowledge in real time.”

CAN YOU GIVE ME A SENSE OF WHAT YOUR PREP TIME WILL BE LIKE WHEN YOU GET TO THE TRACK ON RACE DAY? “When I was a student in school, unless I had to, I was never a last-minute studier for a test, unless it was just memorization of facts. I never studied for any math test because if you didn’t know the math, if you didn’t know how to use those formulas and apply it in the questions that are gonna be asked, you’re not gonna know it in the next eight hours. For me, that’s been the same philosophy with our race team. It’s that we nail down what we want to do during the weekend during the week. Yeah, things may change and you have to be adaptive, but if I were to get a flat tire driving to Bristol tomorrow and I show up 20 minutes before the race, we don’t need to talk about anything. If I showed up and just got in the race car, we won’t need to talk about anything unless factors have changed and we know how to adapt to them. I think that’s the strength in our team is that when we do show up to the track and I’m someone that does like to show up when the garage opens and roll through tech and hang out with my guys. We kind of just know what to do and we’re just waiting for that opportunity to go show and do it, so that’s what’s fun for me. That time is a little bit boring. I might jump on and look at some onboard video just to get my head in the game, but other than that we’re pretty ready to go.”

    Driver Quotes

“This is our last chance to get into the playoffs for the driver’s championship, and we plan to make it our best shot. We’ve run well the past three races, but events haven’t gone our way, so we need to make the most of this weekend at Bristol. We’ve been fast—I had the best car I’ve ever had there last fall—and we can do it again. This No. 1 Pilot Flying J team will give it everything we have.”– Michael Annett

“I love racing at Bristol. It’s a place that has really suited my driving style over the years and I feel like we have always unloaded with a car that is capable of going to Victory Lane, but we’ve just had circumstances not go our way. Hopefully, all will go well on Friday night and we will unload just as fast and can be in contention for the win with our BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet and end this regular season on a strong note as we head into the playoffs.” – Justin Allgaier

“Bristol is a track that I am really comfortable at and I am looking forward to getting there in a few days. I will be running the ARCA and Truck races again, so hopefully we can defend the wins we had there in 2020. JRM had strong runs last season at Bristol and I know it will be more of the same this year, so I have a lot of confidence going into the race on Friday night. This Tire Pros Chevrolet is going to look awesome underneath the lights and it would look even better in Victory Lane.” – Sam Mayer

“I am excited to get back to Bristol this week. It’s a track that this No. 9 Bass Pro Shops/TrueTimber/Black Rifle Coffee Camaro has always been strong at. We got the win during our first visit last season and then ran seventh at this race last year. Dave (Elenz, crew chief) and the No. 9 team has been unloading fast Camaros all year and we are really trending in the right direction with the two wins we have had in the last two races. Hopefully we can make it a third win this weekend and enter the playoffs on a high note.” – Noah Gragson

Go Bowling Racing: Riley Herbst Richmond NXS Race Report

    Herbst Finishes Fifth at Richmond
Tire Strategy Earns Go Bowling Team Third Top-Five of 2021

    Date: Sept. 11, 2021
Event: Go Bowling 250 (Round 25 of 33)
    Series: NASCAR Xfinity Series
Location: Richmond (Va.) Raceway (.75-mile oval)
Format: 250 laps, broken into three stages (75 laps/75 laps/100 laps)
    Start/Finish: 20th / 5th (Running, completed 250 of 250 1aps)
Point Standing: 11th (590 points, 403 out of first)

Race Winner: Noah Gragson of JR Motorsports (Chevrolet)
Stage 1 Winner: A.J. Allmendinger of Kaulig Racing (Chevrolet)
Stage 2 Winner: Ty Gibbs of Joe Gibbs Racing (Toyota)

    Overview:

Riley Herbst and the No. 98 Go Bowling team’s pit strategy paid off in Saturday’s Go Bowling 250 at Richmond (Va.) Raceway as they brought home a fifth-place finish. Herbst was on a mission to gain points in the race for the NASCAR Playoffs. When the green flag waved on the 250-lap race, the Go Bowling driver quickly worked his way up to 14th before the lap-35 competition caution. He reported that his car’s balance wasn’t bad in the initial stages but could use an air pressure adjustment. He restarted 13th but was unable to hold the spot as new tires came up through the field. He fell back to 16th, where he finished the first stage. During the stage break, the team pitted for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment to combat a loose racecar. In addition, the No. 98 Go Bowling pit crew gained their driver a total of six spots on pit road to have him restart 10th for the second stage. Herbst stayed in the top-10 during the second stage, moving up to eighth by the stage end. During the final segment, Herbst was struggling with the short-run speed of his Ford Mustang and fell back to 13th on the initial run. When the caution came out on lap 183, crew chief Richard Boswell made the call to keep his driver out when the leaders came down pit road to put on their final set of fresh tires, hoping for a late-race caution. The tire strategy was successful. When the caution came out on lap 224 and Herbst was able to come down pit road to put on his final set of tires, the leaders had none to use. He restarted the race 14th, and a series of cautions that followed forced Herbst to rely on his fresh tires and short-run speeds. On the final restart on lap 244, the 22-year-old driver restarted 10th and rocketed his way to fifth in the final laps of the race. This was his third top-five finish of the 2021 season, and it grew his lead above the playoff cutline to 66 points heading into the final race of the regular season.

Riley Herbst, driver of the No. 98 Go Bowling Ford Mustang for Stewart-Haas Racing:

“That finish was good, for sure. I wish we didn’t get the late cautions there, because maybe we could have stolen a win, but all in all I think that’s what we needed going to Bristol next week. We maintained the points, and hopefully we’ll go playoff racing back home. That tire strategy was all Richard (Boswell, crew chief), honestly. We were just playing defense because we couldn’t afford to have anybody else win, so we had to play defense instead of offense. Luckily, it paid off a little bit, and it was a good deal.”

    Notes:

    ● Herbst finished eighth in Stage 2 to earn three bonus points.
    ● Noah Gragson won the Go Bowling 250 to score his fourth career Xfinity Series victory, his second of the season and his first at Richmond. His margin over second-place Justin Haley was .381 of a second.
    ● There were nine caution periods for a total of 58 laps.
    ● Twenty-seven of the 40 drivers in the Go Bowling 250 finished on the lead lap.
    ● A.J. Allmendinger remains the championship leader after Richmond with a five-point advantage over second-place Austin Cindric.

    Next Up:

The next event on the Xfinity Series schedule is the final race of the regular season, the Food City 300, on Friday, Sept. 17, at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway. The race starts at 7:30 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by NBCSN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
