    TOYOTA QUOTES

TY GIBBS, No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 1st

How do you describe your first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory?

“You know, I can’t thank everybody right now. This is like a dream come true to me. This is awesome, I can’t do burnouts, that’s one thing I cannot do at all. I just can’t thank everybody, this is just a dream come true to me. I really didn’t think I had it there. Kind of fought back and we won. Thank you to Monster Energy and everybody, I don’t even know what’s going on.”

What do you have to say to your family?

“The family is everything to me, they do so much for me. I just can’t thank them enough, this is just amazing; this is a dream come true. It’s all the man above, I’m sorry I’m a wreck I didn’t think this was going to happen at all. This is awesome, I can’t thank everybody enough watching and last week I had a terrible interview. I want to apologize for everybody, I just can’t thank everybody enough. This is just amazing.”

How do you capture this emotion in this moment?

“I don’t even know how to feel. This is really hard for me to explain. After my uncle passed away, it’s been hard for me. It’s just a dream come true. I’m just rambling. I’m excited. Mixed emotions for sure. This is just awesome.”

Can you talk about that last restart?

“I don’t even know how I kept going. It was the man above. He’s done everything for me. He put me in this great family and in this great situation in life. I feel like I had to earn a lot of respect tonight, and I don’t think I did a too good of a job. I hit the grass and kept on rolling. I have no words. I just won at Daytona.”

Last week, you weren’t too happy after the ARCA race here. Have your thoughts changed about Daytona?

“I just want to say sorry to everyone for that. That was just a complete disgrace by me. I was just mad and rambling and just saying excuses, and I have no excuses for this. I made mistakes all night, and I don’t know how I still won. This is just amazing.”

DANIEL HEMRIC, No. 18 Poppy Bank Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 3rd

Can you describe those last few laps?

“You don’t want to be on the top – I know that. I was the fortunate guy. I stared 13th in the first green-white-checkered. We were in fourth or fifth coming off of turn two. I thought we were going to line-up in fifth on the last one, and something happened with the lineup and we got shuffled to sixth before we got to the green. It was very late notice. You have two rows of old tires in front of us. The guys in front of you spin the tires. I ducked right, and put myself into three-wide coming into turn one. Probably a piss poor move on my part, honestly. I’m proud of these guys. Everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing, TRD, everyone at Toyota that supports us, everyone at Poppy Bank. Man, I want that one decision back. We will lick our wounds and carry on.”

BRANDON JONES, No. 19 Menards/Barracuda Pumps Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 4th

Solid top-five for you today, Brandon, after some damage. How was your race overall?

“I thought we had a really solid Supra all day long. I thought that thoughout the day we had consistent speed to pretty much run top three throughout the day. I don’t think we had the car to completely dominate the race, but definitely one that would run up front throughout the race. What led to our damage was, I felt like coming off of pit road, we were on cold tires. As soon as we came off of pit road, I was looking at my tac, I popped my head up and all that I hear is my spotter Stevie (Reeves) saying check-up, check-up. I think it was a combination of cold tires sliding across the racetrack, I was trying to get it out of first gear so it would stop bucking me into the wreck. We came down pit road after that and really did a good job of making those repairs that we needed. Actually, I think we got the car back pretty much to what it was when we started the race. We were really, really close on our balance, so that was a really good job by those guys to get that back. Then to hold everybody off at the end on four old tires, that was a testament to the team that we are bringing to the table to compete this year for a championship. We were able to rally back from the tires and the damage and still have a top-five out of that. It was a solid day for us, and I think two top-fives on that roaad course is a really good improvement.”

HARRISON BURTON, No. 20 DEX Imaging Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 6th

    How was your race today?

“The way the cards fell at the end, just a chaotic end to these races. Basically, whoever is lucky enough not to get wiped out or a hole opens up or whatever it may be, you just have to try to find holes. Those last restarts kind of hurt us, that’s something we can go back and watch and get better at. I felt like we had good speed all day in our DEX Imaging Supra, just not quite enough to be dominant, but close, so that was a good set-up. It’s little frustrating, but good overall.”

    2nd — Austin Cindric
    25th — Cody Ware
    27th — Ryan Sieg
    39th — Riley Herbst

    FORD PERFORMANCE QUOTES

AUSTIN CINDRIC, No. 22 PPG Ford Mustang — POST-RACE INTERVIEW — “Obviously, I don’t want to be racing to a stage probably that aggressive.  I’d love to see a replay.  Just hopefully we can avoid something like that because AJ and I were gonna be fighting for a win later today, so I hate to be able to do that much damage to our PPG Ford Mustang that early.  It just seemed like he was trying to block, whether if he didn’t know I was there or not.  It sucks.  It’s over with, but we salvaged a great day out of it.  Congratulations to Ty.  That’s obviously really cool.  Congrats to him and his family.  P2, I’ll take it.”

    POST-RACE PRESS CONFERENCE

THOUGHTS ON YOUR START TO THE SEASON WITH A WIN AND A RUNNER-UP?  “Yeah, it’s obviously a great start to the season big picture-wise.  I wish we would have been able to do a little bit more tonight.  If that caution hadn’t come out, but it’s the what-ifs of racing.  Those restarts were crazy.  I hope everyone else enjoyed it because that was stressful and that was challenging, but, overall, it’s a great way to start the year.  I wish we would have been able to get our PPG Ford Mustang in victory lane, but it was not in the cards on those restarts.”

IS IT IMPORTANT FOR YOUR TEAM TO COME OUT OF THE BOX STRONG AND SEND A MESSAGE TO THE FIELD THAT YOU GUYS ARE THE FAVORITES AND YOU’RE GOING TO PERFORM LIKE THAT?  “Yeah, the more you can be offensive than defensive the better.  The last couple weeks we have in some ways maybe painted a target on us as being guys that are willing to race hard to win, so I’m excited that we’re bringing that speed early on in the year, but there’s nothing guaranteed, so you’ve got to keep it going.  You’ve got to be able to keep bringing those race cars.  We have a bunch of different types of tracks coming up on the schedule and I’m looking forward to seeing what we’ve got to start the season.”

DO YOU THINK THERE WILL BE ANY LINGERING AFTER EFFECTS WITH AJ AFTER WHAT HAPPENED IN STAGE 1?  “I doubt it.  I think he and I should talk about it to understand.  Obviously, we had two really great cars capable of winning the race and definitely damaged mine and I never saw him the rest of the afternoon, so I’m sure it obviously affected his chances at winning the race.  It’s frustrating, but I think we can both learn from it and try not to do that again.  He’s a grown-up.  He’s been around.  I’m sure we can talk it out and figure out how to do better moving forward.”

HAVE YOU SEEN THE REPLAY YET?  “That was like three minutes ago, so, no, I have yet to see a TV replay.  I’m fairly certain I know what happened and whether if it’s a difference of opinion or a miscommunication over the spotter radio, I mean, I could probably be equally frustrated or even more frustrated with AJ, so I don’t think that’s the right approach to take.  Like I said earlier, I think we both just need to sit down and talk about it and understand that we both hurt our chances of winning today because of it and move forward and be better.”

HAD YOU EVER RACED TY GIBBS BEFORE AND WHAT DID HE DO TONIGHT TO IMPRESS YOU?  “Yeah, obviously Ty did a really great job tonight.  He didn’t seem to put a wheel wrong at least when I was behind him.  I haven’t raced him before, but he seemed to be able to handle a lot of situations well and I put him in some pretty tough spots trying to hang onto the lead and he did a great job with it.  There were a lot of times I could have easily been shoved off the racetrack, so I felt like he raced me fair, but the way those restarts worked out I’m not sure I could have done much different.  I’m shocked that he didn’t rip the splitter off of it going through the grass heading into turn one on the final restart, so it was cool to watch his interview.  That’s cool for him and his family, so it’ll be interesting to see what he does the rest of the year in his races.  It’s a cool way to start for him.”

HOW DID THE CHANGES TO THE BACKSTRETCH CHICANE WORK?  DID IT IMPACT HOW YOU RACED AT ALL?  “I thought it was a good compromise.  I’m glad that they didn’t put the turtles in the first two curbs because they’re pretty high-speed entries and can do a lot more damage than probably just grass, so I think they found the right compromise.  I don’t see it working very well for a sports car, but it’s a good, quick fix for NASCARs.”

HOW MUCH DID THE DAMAGE TO THE RIGHT-FRONT AFFECT THE CAR AND WAS THAT A DETERMINING FACTOR AT THE END ONCE TY GOT CLEAN AIR?  “I don’t think it changed anything at the end of the race.  By the time I got into second-place he was gone.  All l had to hope for was him screwing up or a caution coming out.  I felt like on equal terms I probably could have been able to make a pass, but it definitely affected my handling in some of the higher speed corners and I’d almost put money on it affecting my braking.  My braking got significantly worse throughout the evening.  I made a lot of mistakes on the brakes while in the lead.  I’m not very proud of those, but just have to go back and understand it better — see what our brake wears look like — and obviously losing a ton of downforce and adding a lot of drag, so definitely didn’t help in a lot of facets.  I wish we wouldn’t have had to overcome th

To kick off his second season of competition at SS GreenLight Racing, Joe Graf Jr. will drive the No. 07 Bucked Up Energy Chevrolet Camaro with a new sophisticated updated livery.

Full of Energy: Bucked Up Energy and its sister products will continue its role as the primary partner of Graf’s No. 07 Chevrolet Camaro to kick off the 2021 Xfinity Series season. The Daytona International Speedway Road Course is the second race of 2021 but is the 24th race overall in a multi-year, multi-race deal with the former ARCA Menards Series winner.
Bucked Up is the everyman (or woman) energy drink. We don’t care about the color of your collar; whether blue or white, we all require energy to power our days. We want something that tastes like success, enhances mood and focus, and most of all delivers long-lasting energy.

Welcome To The Team: On February 10, 2021, Joe Graf Jr. officially announced Buffalo Bills running back Antonio Williams as an investor in his racing program this season.

Williams, 23, will be heavily involved in Graf’s day-to-day business interactions, while also playing a key role as a supporter of his racing endeavors by attending races, including this weekend’s race at the Daytona Road Course.

Together, the two are focused on Graf reaching the pinnacle of the sport, the NASCAR Cup Series in the near future.

The Challenge Is On!: Earlier this week, Antonio Williams threw a challenge at JD Motorsports driver Ryan Vargas and NFL Saints running back Alvin Kamara who is backing Vargas’s race with his The Big Squeezy brand.

If Joe Graf Jr. finishes higher than Vargas’s No. 6 Chevrolet Camaro in Saturday afternoon’s race, Vargas and Kamara will have to make a donation to Graf’s charity of choice, myFace, a leading nonprofit focused on providing the comprehensive care, education and information to help people with craniofacial differences lead full and productive lives.

If Ryan Vargas finishes higher than Graf’s No. 07 Bucked Up Energy Chevrolet Camaro, Williams and Graf will pledge a donation to Vargas’ charity of choice, Son of a Saint, a nonprofit founded in 2011 by Sonny Lee, son of the late New Orleans Saints DB Bivian Lee whose mission is to transform the lives of fatherless boys.

Race fans can also pledge their support to myFace by clicking here.

Joe Graf Jr. Xfinity Series Daytona International Speedway RC Starts: Sophomore NASCAR Xfinity Series driver Joe Graf Jr. will make his second Xfinity Series start at the Daytona International Speedway Road Course on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2021.

Last August, the rookie started 25th but finished 26th, completing 51 of the 52 scheduled laps of the race.

Back To Turning Lefts and Rights Again: For just the fifth time in his NASCAR Xfinity Series career, Joe Graf Jr. will compete on a road course. Graf, 22, earned a career-best finish of 15th in his most recent Road Course event at the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway ROVAL last October in the rain.

Joe Graf Jr. Xfinity Series Career Road Course Nuggets: At tracks classified as a road course, Graf has competed in just four NASCAR Xfinity Series races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Road America (Wisc.), the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway Road Course and the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway ROVAL, respectively.

He holds an average starting position of 27.8 (per rule book) and an average result of 23.0 with 99 percent of the laps complete.

Daytona International Speedway Race Recap: In the season-opening Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner 300 at Daytona, Graf Jr. capitalized on a strong starting position after Mother Nature washed out qualifying Saturday morning to keep his No. 07 Bucked Up Energy Chevrolet tucked up in the lead draft throughout the races’ 120 circuits.

On a late-race restart, Graf Jr. was able to avoid the carnage and draft his SS GreenLight Racing Chevrolet to an 11th place finish, a career-best for Graf in 37 career starts.

From the Pit Box: Industry veteran Mike Tyska is Joe Graf Jr.’s crew chief. He will crew chief his second NASCAR Xfinity Series race as crew chief on Saturday afternoon.

Tyska joined SS GreenLight Racing in January after honing his skills in all three of NASCAR’s national divisions and working for teams like Germain Racing, GMS Racing and Rick Ware Racing.

Tyska was apart of Todd Bodine’s 2006 championship season in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series at Germain Racing.

Hello From The Other Side: Graf Jr. has a teammate at SS GreenLight Racing. Veteran Cody Ware will drive the No. 17 SS GreenLight Racing Chevrolet on Saturday afternoon.

Ware, a veteran racer is poised to make his 23rd career NASCAR Xfinity Series start, but first at the 3.61mile, 14-turn Daytona International Speedway Road Course.

    Joe Graf Jr. Pre-Race Quotes:

On Daytona International Speedway Road Course: “I’m ready for the challenge of another road course in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. I know it rained hard, but my last road course race at the Charlotte ROVAL last fall, I had a blast.

“We stayed out of trouble and had a good finish. We’ll need to do more of the same on Saturday. Our team has some momentum right now and I sure would like to keep it on our side heading to Homestead-Miami Speedway.”

On Daytona International Speedway Finish: “There are so many reasons to be thankful for how Daytona went last week. I can’t thank my SS GreenLight Racing team enough for their hard work.

“As a team, we had a good day that was rewarded with a strong finish and a positive vibe to start the 2021 NASCAR Xfinity Series season. I hope it continues.”

On The Challenge: “I’m proud of the initiatives that Antonio is taking control of since we announced our partnership last week at Daytona. He is really doing some good stuff not only for me personally, but for NASCAR as a whole.

“With fellow running back Alvin Kamara joining NASCAR with Ryan (Vargas), what a cool way to collide the two worlds for the sake of competition and giving back.

“The challenge is on and I hope we win.”

Brett Moffitt Starts From Pole at Daytona Road Course After Best-Ever Xfinity Finish

Brett Moffitt and the Quartz Hill Records / Nate Barnes No.02 Chevrolet will start from the pole this Saturday in the Super Start Batteries 188 at the Daytona Road Course. This will mark the first ever race that Our Motorsports will take the initial green flag from the pole position in a NASCAR Xfinity Series race. This Saturday’s race will come off of an exciting best-ever finish of  2nd for the No.02 Our Motorsports team last week at the season opening race at Daytona.

Sponsor Quartz Hill Records will be represented in a yellow, red, and black scheme highlighting  fast-rising country artist Nate Barnes with the hood adorning the artwork for his debut single,  “You Ain’t Pretty.” Barnes’ “You Ain’t Pretty” has already earned over 14 million TikTok streams and debuted as the #2 Most Added Country Song in the U.S. this week.  Quartz Hill Records is a Nashville-based record label helmed by former BBR Music Group Benny Brown, former BBR Music Group CFO Paul Brown, and hit songwriter Jason Sellers.

    Looking back at last week:

Last week, Moffitt finished in the runner-up position at the biggest race of the season, which was already a big story for the Chris Our owned team, but the team also recorded its first ever stage win in the second stage at Daytona. Crew Chief Joe Williams put the team in a position to win late in the race, with the No.02 leading six laps total and only 0.104 seconds short of the victory. That finish marks Moffitt’s best-ever finish in his 33rd Xfinity Series start, and Our  Motorsports’ best finish in just their second-ever season.

    In his words:

    Driver Brett Moffit

“I really like the new course at Daytona. I had a good run in the trucks there last year and Andy  Lally had a phenomenal run with Our Motorsports last year, so my expectations are very high for this weekend. I know there will be a lot of eyes on us after our strong run last weekend and we want to do all we can to keep impressing. Starting from the pole, even through a random draw, shows that we are running with the people we want to be racing each week and shows just how hard our team has worked to continue improving our program. I’m excited to get this  No.02 Chevy on track for Quartz Hill Records and I hope everyone checks out Nate Barnes’ music, it means a lot to have them supporting our team.”

Past Results at the Daytona Road Course for Our Motorsports:

Last year, in the NASCAR Xfinity Series’ only-ever race at the Daytona Road Course, Andy Lally piloted the 02 Chevrolet for Our Motorsports, starting 6th and finishing 5th. This year, Lally will be piloting the No.99 Energy Air Inc Chevrolet for BJ McLeod Motorsports with technical assistance from Our Motorsports, with Moffitt running the full season in the No.02 Chevy.

Tune in: The NASCAR Xfinity Series and Our Motorsports are headed back to Daytona International  Speedway this week for the Super Start Batteries 188 on Saturday, February 20th for the first road course race of the season. Fans can catch the action on FS1, MRN/Sirius XM NASCAR, and other local radio affiliates at 5pm and by following Our Motorsports on social media.

Let the challenge begin (Joe Graf Jr. vs. Ryan Vargas)

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.: Two of the National Football League’s toughest running backs Antonio Williams and Alvin Kamara will see their two NASCAR Xfinity Series drivers Joe Graf Jr. and Ryan Vargas battle it out on the track in Saturday’s Super Start Batteries 188 at the Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway Road Course all for a good cause.

On Wednesday, Kamara, the running back for the New Orleans Saints announced a partnership for the second Xfinity Series race of the season with Vargas and JD Motorsports with Gary Keller.

Williams, who announced last week that he has become a personal investor in the future of Joe Graf Jr.’s NASCAR career challenged Kamara and Vargas through a social media post that the top finishing driver in the 52-lap race would pledge a donation to a charity of each team’s choice.

If Graf Jr., finishes higher than Vargas’s No. 6 The Big Squeezy Chevrolet, Vargas and Kamara have agreed to make a donation to Graf’s charity myFace, a leading nonprofit focused on providing the comprehensive care, education and information to help people with craniofacial differences lead full and productive lives.

If Vargas finishes higher than Graf’s No. 07 Bucked Up Energy Chevrolet, Graf and Williams will proudly make a donation to Vargas’s charity, Son of a Saint, a nonprofit founded in 2011 by Sonny Lee, son of the late New Orleans Saints DB Bivian Lee whose mission is to transform the lives of fatherless boys.

William’s mission is to continue to bring the two worlds of the NFL and NASCAR together and encourage other players to consider investing in the sport he has enjoyed since childhood.

“This idea came together really quickly, but I thought what a better way to welcome Alvin into NASCAR than with a friendly challenge between the two of our drivers,” Williams said. “Joe and Ryan have raced many races together – but this weekend it will be a little more important not just for points, but the chance to give to others who work tirelessly to make a difference.”

On the heels of a career-best 11th place finish at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway on Feb. 13, Graf is ready for the task at hand and hopes his experience at the 14-turn road course last August will pay dividends on Saturday.

“I love being a part of ideas like this,” added Graf. “I’m not a road course expert by any means, but when there is a challenge on the line, I’m all in.

“I’m doing my part to adequately prepare myself to have a good weekend not only for my team and partners – but an extra incentive to bring a contribution and exposure to myFace too. Looking forward to Saturday afternoon.”

Graf will start Saturday’s race from ninth, while Vargas is scheduled to roll off 12th.

    Toyota Racing – Harrison Burton
    NASCAR Xfinity Series Quotes

DAYTONA BEACH (February 18, 2021) – Joe Gibbs Racing driver Harrison Burton was made available to media via videoconference prior to the Daytona Road Course event today:

HARRISON BURTON, No. 20 DEX Imaging Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing
How was your race in Daytona?

“It was awesome. I’ve been waiting to get back to the racetrack for a while with my new team members, and the old team members that are still on my team from last year. We’ve got a great group of guys. It’s been really great so far. Obviously, we are just one race in, but it was a good result. We had a chance to win and that’s all you can ask for at a place like Daytona – is give yourself a shot. We came up short and gave myself some film to watch to try to get better next time. Overall, it was a good day – tough day to lose because you lead a lot of laps at Daytona, you start getting excited. It just didn’t work out for us, so I’ve got some things I can do to try to be better and we will move on from there.”

What does it feel like to you to know you had the opportunity to attend races as a kid, and now you are driving and making your own brand?

“It’s crazy. I always thought that my dad (Jeff Burton) was a superhero. My dad was a race car driver and that was the coolest thing in the world for me to look at my dad and be proud of him and be proud of how hard he works to be there. Now to see him and how he does his career, the tail end of his career, where I was able to remember most of it and remember how hard he had to work, it’s pretty surreal to go back and have a chance to win races and race at these places that my dad went to. It’s pretty rare that you get to slow down and reflect on it. You are always so busy racing and going like crazy, but it’s pretty awesome. I’m proud of my dad and really trying to follow in his footsteps and be even half the man that he was.”

What have you done to prepare for the road course races?

“There is a ton of road races, so it’s super important for Playoff points, for race wins, for whatever your goals are. Road courses, you are going to have to find a way to win there. You are going to have to find a way to run well, win, whatever it may be. It’s really important. Recently, I’ve been working really hard on road races. I went to COTA in a TransAm car to try to get better – a TA2 car, raced there with some Toyota teammates. That was a good time. We didn’t race, but we tried to race and practiced. That was good. My dad (Jeff Burton) and I both got go-karts. We are both ripping around road courses in go-karts all the time. I’m trying to get better and he’s trying to stay in shape and have fun. I’m trying to be fast, so it’s a good combination of father-son rivalry. We have a good time with that. Lot of it has been in person seat time, and a lot of it has been watching film and trying to get better that way as well.”

What has been your biggest challenge in preparing for the road course races?

“I think the biggest challenge – the guys that separate themselves are amazing in the braking zones. You watch in the Clash; Chase Elliott is the road racing guy now. He’s the favorite to win at all of the road races. You could see him in the braking zone just slamming the car in there, using all of the brakes but not locking up, aggressive, things like that. That’s the biggest challenge – getting yourself past that next level. If you look at the data, I’m just as fast as anyone from center to exit, but those guys that have that braking technique and have dialed that down over years and years are very good. They are very hard to beat, and they are always getting better like you are. So if you show up to the racetrack and you think that I’m better now, I’m going to come in here and whoop everyone’s tail – everyone else got better too, so you’ve got to be almost doubling their rate of growth. It’s a big challenge but it’s fun.”

Do you wonder where you fit in with Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. signing extensions?

“Obviously, you think about things like that because your dream is to be in the Cup Series, but if I’m ever going to be there – I’ve got to focus on where I’m at now. Last year, I had a good year, won races, got my name into those conversations somewhat, but didn’t do anything to make it an undeniable thing. That’s what you have to do now-a-days to get a Cup ride, you have to be amazing in the Xfinity Series. You see Chase Briscoe, Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, guys that win a ton of races and they find a way to make themselves undeniable for the Cup Series, so that’s the next step for me, plus I love the Xfinity Series. It’s so much fun. Winning races there is an amazing feeling, and I hope to be doing more of that – but that’s the next deal for me, is trying to be at that level and have a season like that.”

What can you do to show you are the guy who can take that next step?

“I think show that you are ready to put in the work. When you get to the Cup Series, no matter how good you are in the Xfinity or Trucks or wherever you come from, it’s a big step. Those guys are all amazing. They are all guys that are there for a reason. They are the best of the best. To go there and contend for wins, and win races, is one of the hardest things on this planet to do. To show that you are willing to work, to show that you are willing to take criticism and try to get better from it, that’s my biggest thing. There’s also the side effect of work is getting better, so you want to show that you are working and getting better to try to impress people, but you are also doing it because you need to, to win races. You want to win races. I think if I just focus on where I’m at now. I know it’s a cliché answer, but if I focus on where I’m at now and try to be the best that I can be here and try to enjoy where I’m at, I think that maybe puts me in a better spot to be able to make that jump one day.”

What do you think it will take to move to the Cup Series?

“The Xfinity Series champion puts himself or herself in a great spot to be a Cup driver one day. So, whatever it takes to win a championship for me is kind of a goal. My new crew chief Jason (Ratcliff) when we first got to working with each other, we had a few meetings and we decided to write down our goals and go research what it took to win the championship – how many laps did they lead, how many stages did they win, whatever it may be. We went over all of that separately, wrote down our goals and came together with pretty similar goals – six or seven wins, less than three DNFs. Things that have been averaged out to what it takes to be a champion, now we just have to go attack and believe in those goals. There is always the outlier. (Tyler) Reddick’s first championship, I think he won one race, guys like that who can do that is another way to do it, but on average you have to win a lot of races and stages to be a champion.”

Do you have any stories that your dad told you about racing with Dale Earnhardt?

“Later towards when Dale (Earnhardt) passed away, my dad (Jeff Burton) and my mom (Kim Burton) were thinking about getting this boat. My dad has always loved boats and he was racing Cup, and he was in a spot where he thought he could get a boat. My mom was nervous, financially nervous, to do it. She was nervous to make a purchase like that – a boat. They came from little to nothing. They were in South Boston, Virginia and clawed their way through bad times, and once they got to the top, they were like we have to save our money. Dale Sr. came up to my mom, and hugged my mom, and it was probably within a few months of when he passed away and he was telling her to go and live life and go get this boat. Shortly after Dale passed away, they got this boat and made some memories on that thing before they sold it. He tells me stories about Dale a lot. He tells me stories about a lot of things because I’m interested in it, but I think that’s the coolest one. No one knew what would happen, but he was telling my parents to go enjoy life, live life and then the unthinkable happen, but they made a decision based on that moment.”

How do you grade yourself as a road racer right now?

“I don’t know, but I’ll tell you better after this weekend. I’ve been working really hard to be better. I think last weekend was my best superspeedway race I’ve ever driven. I felt like I made a lot of gains in that regard. I really hope I made a lot of gains in the road racing regard too. I’ve been working really hard on it. I think last year I was fast. I was kind of in contention for the best of the rest of last year. You had your road racing ringers and then there was the guys like me and I’d put Riley Herbst was there, I’d put Noah Gragson in there – the guys that were not quite as fast as Chase (Briscoe) and Austin (Cindric), but guys that were close and pretty quick on lap time and were able to contend in the end. I put myself in there as of last year, but hopefully this year I made that jump to be that much better and contend for wins and lead laps. I’ll tell you after this weekend.”

What stood out to you about the Daytona Road Course?

“It’s a fun race track. It’s a place that was really, really cool to run at. Just because you never thought you would. You’ve always seen the Rolex race there and you always dreamed of racing at Daytona, but you never were dreaming about racing the road course at Daytona as a little kid, or at least I wasn’t. To do that was a cool experience and something that I never thought I would do. The race track in and of itself is so fun. It’s a low grip infield with a high grip outside of the track. It leads to a lot of great passing zones, a lot of great opportunity for good racing. We saw that in the Clash. The Clash this year was a crazy finish at the end and I expect more of that this year.”

When you are racing on a road course, how can you tell the difference between rubbing and bumping that’s part of the race or is intentional?

“You know normally by how hard they hit you or whether or not you end up in the grass or whether or not you end up wrecked or spun out or whatever. Like last year, me and Ross (Chastain) were racing real hard and he wheel-hopped and he got loose under me and hit me off the race track. I was upset and I was frustrated, but I knew it wasn’t on purpose. I knew he didn’t take me out on the last lap on purpose just because I could tell what happened. You can kind of tell by the aggression level the guy behind you, the part of the race that you’re in and things like that. At the end of the day, they have fenders on our cars for a reason and we use them. It’s a lot of fun. I try and race people the way I want to be raced and I expect the same towards myself. Normally, I don’t really have too many issues with it. It’s been fun. The road races are crazy. The last five laps of road course races in the Xfinity Series are nuts. Everyone is going crazy and it’s pretty fun. It’s like racing go-karts and banging off each other, it’s pretty cool.”

    Driver Quotes

“We had a really fast Chevrolet Camaro last season on the Daytona road course, and had a top-10 finish in the bag before the final chicane. Since we have seven road courses on the schedule this year, it’s going to be important to maximize our finishes, and it starts at Daytona this weekend. I was proud of our Pilot Flying J/American Heart Association team last week, and we’ll rebound with a good finish this weekend.” – Michael Annett

“Last week we didn’t get the finish we wanted, but it was out of our control. I’m looking forward to heading back to Daytona this weekend and getting another shot at running on the road course. We had some good success there last year. What’s really awesome about this weekend is having two BRANDT cars on the track with the addition of Miguel (Paludo) in the No. 8. I know it means a lot to Rick (Brandt) for this to be happening and we want to go out there and put on a good race and do what we can to get to Victory Lane.” – Justin Allgaier

“It has always been a goal of mine to return to compete in NASCAR and to get this opportunity with BRANDT Professional Agriculture and JR Motorsports is just a dream come true. I can’t wait to get to the track down in Daytona this weekend with this No. 8 team and hopefully we can be in contention all race long. I just can’t say thank you enough for this opportunity and to get the chance to race with my BRANDT teammate Justin Allgaier, it’s just really special.” – Miguel Paludo

“We ran really well at the Daytona Road Course last year and I expect us to do much of the same this year. I made a few mistakes last year that really set us back, and I don’t plan on making those a second time around. Our No. 9 team has shown strength on road courses and these races really fit my driving style, so I think you’ll see the Bass Pro Shops/TrueTimber/Black Rifle Coffee Camaro up front and contending for the win.” – Noah Gragson

    Notes:

Austin Cindric held off Brett Moffitt and Harrison Burton in NASCAR Overtime to win the Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner. 300 Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway. The victory was Team Penske’s first NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) victory at the 2.5-mile speedway and the first for Cindric in seven starts at Daytona. The driver of the Verizon 5G Ford Mustang now has wins on the superspeedway, road course and in rallycross competition at the World Center of Racing. Cindric also becomes the second Xfinity champion from the previous season (2020) to win the season-opener at Daytona the following year (2021) joining 1996 champion Randy LaJoie.

Persistent rain on Saturday morning washed out NXS qualifying. The starting lineup was set per NASCAR rule book, which gave Cindric the pole position.

Cindric opened his 2021 race season leading twice for nine laps in Stage 1 and finished fourth when the 30-lap segment concluded on lap 30. The defending series champion came to pit road during the stage caution on lap 33 for two tires, fuel, slight adjustments, and restarted 14th when the race went green on lap 36.

In Stage 2, Cindric shuffled out of line and briefly fell outside the top 20 before rallying back through the field. Showing his maturity and skill, the driver of the No. 22 Verizon 5G Mustang raced to the third position by the conclusion of the second stage on lap 60. He avoided a four-car accident that happened just behind him as the field crossed the finish line to complete the second segment. Debris from the incident forced NASCAR officials to briefly halt the race for track cleanup. When the race resumed, Cindric pitted on lap 62.

The driver of the Verizon 5G Ford restarted in second position on lap 65 and took the lead one lap later, holding the top spot until lap 74 when he slowed to enter the pits for a scheduled green flag stop. As he led a group of cars to pit road, an accident occurred in the middle of the pack, bringing out the caution and causing the Verizon 5G team to call an audible. Crew chief Brian Wilson told Cindric to forgo their stop to avoid a penalty. Cindric remained on track and pitted the next lap. He restarted 12th when the event went green on lap 83.

The race would be slowed by three more cautions, with the final one pushing the finish into NASCAR Overtime. As the green flag waved for the final time on lap 120, Cindric lead the field to the green and did a masterful job holding off Moffitt and Burton in the final two laps to capture his first career victory at Daytona, crossing the finish line .104 seconds ahead of Moffitt. The win was Cindric’s ninth career victory.

Cindric will be back in action on Sunday afternoon as he makes his NASCAR Cup Series debut in the Daytona 500 behind the wheel of the No. 33 Verizon 5G Ford Mustang.

Quote: “What an awesome race and what a really fast Verizon 5G Ford Mustang. Unbelievable effort by everyone at Team Penske. Obviously, coming off a lot of momentum winning that championship last year, but nothing is guaranteed, and we keep working hard. Congrats to my man Coleman (Pressley, spotter) up on the roof. He puts in just as much effort or more than I do and I’m proud of him. Our guys have delivered on bringing us extremely fast Ford Mustang race cars. The thing that’s really cool about winning tonight is that I’ve won on the road course here, I won the rallycross race they had here and now the superspeedway. I’m really proud of the effort.”

Austin Cindric Pulls off Overtime Victory in Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. ® 300 at Daytona

Daytona Beach, Fla. (Feb. 13, 2021) – Austin Cindric took up where he left off in 2020.

The reigning NASCAR Xfinity Series champion held off Brett Moffitt and Harrison Burton in a two-lap NASCAR Overtime dash to win Saturday’s action-filled Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300 at Daytona International Speedway, the season-opener.

Cindric, who locked up the Xfinity title by winning in his last outing at Phoenix Raceway in November, picked up his first victory on the 2.5-mile Daytona oval and the ninth of his career in the No. 22 Team Penske Ford.

“What an awesome race,” said Cindric, who will make his NASCAR Cup Series debut in Sunday’s Daytona 500. “What a really fast Verizon 5G Ford Mustang. Unbelievable effort by everyone at Team Penske.

“Obviously, coming off a lot of momentum winning that championship last year, but nothing is guaranteed and keep working hard. Congrats to my man, (spotter) Coleman (Pressley) up on the roof. He puts in just as much effort or more as I do. I’m proud of him, and we’ll try to go do it again tomorrow, I guess.”

The runner-up result was a career-best for Moffitt, who previously had one top five in the series, a fifth at Talladega.

“Once the 22 (Cindric) got up front, every time I got within a car length, I’d just push him farther forward,” said Moffitt, who chased Cindric in overtime time after taking over second place from Burton, the third-place finisher.

Jeb Burton, Harrison’s cousin, ran fourth, despite sustaining minor damage to the nose of his No. 10 Chevrolet in a three-car incident that caused the ninth caution on Lap 114 of a scheduled 120 and set up the overtime.

AJ Allmendinger was fifth, followed by Brandon Brown, Myatt Snider, Brandon Gdovic (first career top 10), Daniel Hemric and Jason White.

With 15 laps left, contact between the Joe Gibbs Racing cars of Ty Dillon and Daniel Hemric rewrote the story of the race. Dillon moved up the track between cars running in the inside and outside lanes, but when he tried to complete a pass of Hemric, he turned across the nose of Hemric’s No. 18 Toyota and spun, igniting a chain-reaction wreck that eliminated a handful of potential race winners and probable championship contenders.

Destroyed were the JR Motorsports cars of Justin Allgaier and Josh Berry and the No. 11 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet of Justin Haley, who was trying to win his fourth straight Xfinity Series superspeedway race—an achievement only Dale Earnhardt Jr. had accomplished previously.

“The 18 (Hemric) hit me so hard in the left rear, it drove me up the track,” said Dillon, who is racing in the Xfinity Series after four full seasons at the NASCAR Cup level.

Allgaier saw it differently. “He wrecked the whole field,” Allgaier said. “He had to make a statement… Unfortunately, guys were trying to make moves—veterans who should know better—and making bad decisions.”

On Lap 75, nine circuits after a restart to begin the final stage, the pit window opened, and all hell broke loose off Turn 4 as Cindric slowed at the front of a group of cars headed for pit road. Michael Annett was turned sideways across traffic in a nine-car wreck that wiped out Annett’s No. 1 Chevrolet and the No. 9 of JR Motorsports teammate Noah Gragson, the defending race winner.

The cars of Bayley Currey, Gray Gaulding and Colby Howard also suffered race-ending damage.

“I got wrecked coming to pit road,” Annett said. “I waved them off 10 friggin’ times.”

Stage 1 winner Brandon Jones saw his fortunes change dramatically coming to the checkered flag to end Stage 2. Jones steered his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota up the track to side draft the outside lane, but when he returned to the bottom lane, his attempted block on Myatt Snider’s Chevrolet came too late, and Jones spun across the nose of Snider’s car.

After a wild slide through infield grass soaked by rain earlier in the day, Jones rocketed back onto the track and slammed nose-first into the outside wall. Cody Roper’s Camaro smashed into Jones’ car at high speed, and the spinning Toyota clipped the Chevrolet of Alex Labbe. All three cars were destroyed, and NASCAR red-flagged the race to clear the debris from the track.

Moffitt won the second stage, with Dillon and Cindric second and third behind him.

Only 22 of the 40 cars that started the race were running at the finish of a race that featured nine cautions for a total of 43 laps.

Corey Heim Takes Lucas Oil 200 Driven by General Tire

Venturini Motorsports last month pinned Corey Heim as its full-time driver in the ARCA Menards Series for 2021. His first task was to attempt to extend the team’s four-race winning streak at Daytona International Speedway with a victory in Saturday’s Lucas Oil 200 Driven by General Tire. He did just that.

The 18-year-old Heim held off his VMS teammate, pole-sitter Drew Dollar, on the last lap to win the ARCA Menards Series season-opener at the 2.5-mile tri-oval in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Heim, who won last season’s finale at Kansas Speedway to earn his first series victory, picked up right where he left off driving the No. 20 Toyota.

“I gotta give it all to (crew chief) Shannon Rursch,” said Heim of the final restart with one lap to go Saturday. “He made the perfect call, executed this race perfect. He dialed this JBL Camry in perfect.”

A caution with four laps to go set up Saturday’s overtime finish. With Heim, the leader, taking the top lane and Dollar on the bottom, the latter let the former move to the inside so the duo could work together in the draft.

Even with Dollar’s car damaged and lacking power steering, the plan worked to perfection, and VMS ended the race with a 1-2 finish.

“I felt like that was really all we could do there,” Dollar said of the last lap. “We had a super fast Camry today; just didn’t really have what it took to win once we had damage. Had a little bit of a tire rub and just wanted to get to the end. It was tough without any power steering.”

Defending series champion Bret Holmes finished third ahead of Ty Gibbs in fourth and Kyle Sieg in fifth. Derrick Lancaster, Tanner Gray, Andy Jankowiak, Jack Wood and Sean Corr rounded out the top 10.
