    Laps Led: 75
Point Standings (ahead of second): 1st (+8)

    Notes:

Austin Cindric and the No. 22 Menards/Richmond Mustang grabbed the lead on the final lap to win at Phoenix Raceway and capture the 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series championship. Cindric won for the sixth time this season and his first in six starts at the one-mile Arizona speedway and his 100th NASCAR Xfinity Series start.

Cindric started the 200-lap, 200-mile event from the third position after the field was set per the NASCAR rule book. He battled a slightly loose-handling Menards/Richmond Mustang throughout the first 45-lap stage, a segment that was slowed by four yellow flags including the competition caution on lap 20. Cindric and Ford Performance teammate, Chase Briscoe put on an impressive battle for the lead, racing side-by-side for multiple laps. The driver of the Menards/Richmond Ford Mustang finished second when the stage concluded on lap 45. Crew chief Brian Wilson called his driver to the pit lane during stage caution for four tires, fuel, and Cindric restarted fifth on lap 53.

He was up to second position when the fifth caution was displayed on lap 74. The 22-year-old driver took the lead on lap 83 and held on to win Stage 2 when the segment concluded on lap 90. Cindric pitted during the stage caution for four tires, fuel, and a slight adjustment to aid his tight handling Mustang and restarted third on lap 98.

Cindric took the lead on lap 130 and made a scheduled stop under green on lap 162. A caution came out on lap 171 before the green flag pit cycle was complete with Cindric in fourth position. He remained on track during caution and cycled to the race lead for the restart on lap 177. Cindric steadily pulling away from the field when the eighth and final caution was displayed on lap 199, setting up a NASCAR Overtime dash to the finish. Cindric pitted during the caution for four tires and fuel and restarted third. He motored by Justin Allgaier and Noah Gragson over the final two laps to claim his first NASCAR Xfinity Series championship and eighth-career victory.

Cindric’s championship is Team Penske’s second NASCAR Xfinity Series championship, and series tying fifth NASCAR Xfinity Series owners Championship.

Quotes: “This was an amazing effort by Brian Wilson and everybody back at the shop. There was a lot of work put into this Ford Mustang. I’ve got to thank Roger Penske and everyone from Team Penske plus the Menards family who put so much support into racing itself. It’s awesome to get them a championship in NASCAR, to be a champion in NASCAR, and do it in front of all these great people cheering us on at championship weekend. Thanks to Ford Performance, Doug Yates, and everybody at Roush Yates Engines. I’m speechless. I’m pretty humbled by the effort for sure.”

    TOYOTA QUOTES

BRANDON JONES, No. 19 Toyota Service Centers Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 3rd

Great finish tonight. How was your race?

“We were eating everybody lunch on the long run. That’s such our strong suit. We have a setup that just dominates these guys when we get strung out like that. I think tonight we were lacking a little bit of speed on our fire off. We went back and talked about it, and possibly, I think we were just on the splitter a little too hard and that was affecting our first couple of laps. Once the car came off of the splitter, we would get really good, so we are going to look at that. We pumped the tires up on that last restart and that was my best restart of the day, so we definitely made some gains on it. This was a really good race. I thought that we were the ones that were going to be competitive enough to win the race. I think the whole year as a whole was phenomenal really. It was definitely one of the best years I have had in my career, so couldn’t be more thankful for that. We have a lot of momentum building for that next year.”

HARRISON BURTON, No. 20 DEX Imaging Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 6th

What was the biggest thing you learned this season?

“I think the biggest thing for me was just having confidence in myself. These Xfinity Series cars are so tough to drive. You are always on the edge of grip if you are going fast. I had a great time this year building that confidence. We had a win early at Auto Club and that really kind of made me a better driver, if that makes sense. Once I kind of knew I could get to victory lane and was confident in my team that we could get it done, that made things easier. Just looking at myself and reflecting, the biggest thing you learn – and it’s kind of a weird answer – is everything. You can’t point at one thing and say I got better at this, and this and this, if you could, it would be a lot easier to be a better racecar driver. There is a whole picture that you have to put together. I have great people around me that help me get there. I feel like we were a competitor to win the championship this year. We won four races. We needed a little bit more to get to where the Championship 4 was as far as consistency, and we just came up short. I learned a lot and the biggest thing was just confidence.”

FORD PERFORMANCE DRIVER – POST RACE QUOTES

    FORD FINISHING RESULTS:
    1st – Austin Cindric
    9th – Chase Briscoe

MARK RUSHBROOK, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports — WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO HOW THAT RACE ENDED? “It’s incredible to see how Austin has developed from racing in IMSA with us, through trucks and then Xfinity, and to have such a strong breakout season with six wins now and winning the championship shows how much he’s developed. In this race he was just patient, looked for his opportunity and drove with a lot of confidence and got it done.”

WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND WITH HOW THE RACE PLAYED OUT? “It was crazy those last few laps with the cautions and different strategies. Allgaier taking his tires two stops before the end was the start, but I thought it was good that Austin held him off on old tires. I knew once Austin got new tires he just needed a clean shot to pass him, and he went and got it on the green-white-checker.”

MUSTANG HAS NOW WON AN XFINITY DRIVER OR OWNER’S CHAMPIONSHIP IN ALL BUT TWO SEASONS SINCE IT BEGAN RACING IN THE SERIES IN 2011. HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO FORD FOR MUSTANG TO HAVE THAT KIND OF SUCCESS? “Mustang is a flagship for Ford Motor Company and it tells a great story about the company because it represents what we’re capable of, so to have it representing the company on the track in so many different series, especially in Xfinity with the success that it’s had, is important. Plus, the new body this year has demonstrated what our engineering tools are capable of in terms of developing and putting successful cars on the track.”

A LOT HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT HAVING ONLY TWO MUSTANGS IN THE SERIES, BUT FORD WON 15 OF THE 33 RACES. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE SUCCESS OF THIS YEAR WITH AUSTIN AND CHASE? “We knew it would be a challenge with only two cars for this whole season, but we knew we had two great teams with two great drivers. They all showed what they were capable of, so we’re really proud to get those 15 wins and to get this driver’s championship.”

AUSTIN CINDRIC, No. 22 Menards/Richmond Ford Mustang — YOU ARE THE CHAMPION. HOW CONFIDENT WERE YOU IN THAT LAST CALL TO COME TO PIT ROAD? “I watched Sheldon Creed do it last night, so why couldn’t we? Amazing effort by this 22 team. Brian Wilson and all the guys. Everybody back at the shop. There was a lot of work put into this race car. Roger Penske. Everyone from Penske Racing. The Menards family, John, Paul, Jim, Jeff — all those guys that put so much support into racing itself. It’s awesome to get them a championship in NASCAR, to be a champion in NASCAR, and do it in front of all these great people cheering us on at championship weekend. Ford Performance, Doug Yates, everybody at Roush Yates Engines. I’m speechless. I can’t believe it. I’m pretty humbled by the effort for sure.”

EARLIER THIS WEEK YOU SAID WHEN YOU CAME INTO NASCAR YOU KNEW A LOT ABOUT CARS BUT NOT MUCH ABOUT RACING. TO NOW BE A CHAMPION IN NASCAR WHAT DOES THAT TELL YOU ABOUT YOURSELF? “I finally learned how to race a little better, that’s for certain. The people that have put the support in me and been dedicated — my spotter Coleman Pressley. All the folks that have supported me throughout my career, not just here but the road racing, driving Rallycross cars. My mom and my dad. I can’t forget them. They’re my parents and they’ve put more support behind me than anyone else. My mom has been my rock for my entire racing career. I told you guys that early in the week and I’m so glad she was here to watch.”

WHAT WAS THE TURNING POINT IN THIS RACE? “This thing came to life lap one. I mean, talk about a relationship between driver and crew chief. I can ask him exactly…we were terrible here in the spring race when I moved up, and I asked him, I told him exactly what I needed and he gave it to me and look where we are. It’s amazing.”

WERE YOU NERVOUS ABOUT THAT LAST PIT CALL? “You’d think I’d be nervous this entire weekend, but given how important this race was for me and my team I was happy to be here, happy to be racing for a championship and that mentality has paid off. I’ve been points racing for the last six weeks and I got to drive my ass off for one day and put this Menards/Richmond Ford Mustang in Victory Lane.”

THE CAR SEEMED IT WAS MUCH BETTER ON LONGER RUNS. DID YOU MAKE ANY CHANGES THROUGHOUT THE DAY? “I think we gave her a skosh of air-pressure. I mean, this thing came here perfect. It’s amazing what these guys are capable of. It’s a lot of hard work, a lot of preparation. I know that’s easy to say, but the work gets done and effort equals results.”

DID YOU EVER DREAM YOU WOULD BE A NASCAR CHAMPION AT 9 YEARS OLD WHEN YOU WANTED TO GO RACING? “When I started racing Bandolero and Legends cars I got a lot tougher because I wasn’t very good. I guess to any kid out there that’s trying to make a career at this it’s about the hard work you put in. It’s not about where you start, it’s how you figure it out along the way and I’m very fortunate that I have parents that have seen it all and believe in me and I have a team behind me that does the same.”

IT’S BEEN A DIFFERENT YEAR. ROGER PENSKE IS HERE. WHAT DID HE TELL YOU ON THE RADIO? “He was pumped. This is a guys that gives his drivers what they need and the fact that we were able to get it done with those resources and have a shot at a championship tomorrow. We’re just getting the crowd warmed up for Penske Racing. On Saturday we get the championship and hopefully the boys can get it all on Sunday.”

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 98 HighPoint.com Ford Mustang — WHAT CHALLENGES DID YOU GO THROUGH TODAY? “I don’t run very good here in general. At the start of the race I felt pretty good. I was able to lead and, honestly, for me, just leading here was a big deal and we were just so loose. I think it was good that first run and then from there I just kept getting looser and looser as the night came. I don’t know how many times I hit the wall in turn one and the same into three. I was so loose. It would cut the center good on the long run. II would lose a straightaway and a half on the short run just being too loose, so I’ve got a lot to do to get a lot better here that’s for dang sure. I hate that it switched from Homestead. I feel like that’s my best track. Of all the years to make it to the final four it just didn’t work out, but overall a great season in our HighPoint.com Ford Mustang. I’m glad Austin was able to get the championship. That’s big for Ford. It’s on to next year.”

WHERE ARE YOUR EMOTIONS RIGHT NOW? “It’s nice to know that I’m going to the Cup Series and all these things, but it sucks to run fourth in the championship after the year that we had, but that’s how it works. I didn’t execute and they did a better job, so go on to next year. It’s gonna be an uphill battle all year long, but looking forward to the challenge.”

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE TODAY? “It was just a frustrating day. This is by far not my best racetrack. We started the race and, for me, just leading laps here I was like, ‘Wow, this is different.’ I was just so loose at the beginning of the race and as the night came I was just getting freer and freer. I don’t know how many times I about wrecked into one and would end up hitting the wall. I’ve got to do a lot better job coming here. There’s something about this place that I just really struggle at, so I’ve got a lot of homework to do. It’s definitely frustrating to finish fourth in the championship after the year we had, but, overall, to win nine races it’s been a phenomenal year. I’m happy that we were able to just make the final four with our HighPoint.com Mustang. I’m just thankful to be driving in NASCAR honestly. I’m obviously looking forward to next year, but this one obviously hurts. Anytime you can win nine races and finish fourth in the championship isn’t what you wanted, but we’ll keep our heads high and, like I said, just proud of the whole team. To be able to work with me these last two and a half years from where we started to where we are now has been a huge difference, so just thankful to be driving for Stewart-Haas Racing and come back next year.”

HOW HARD DID YOU WORK AT TRYING TO MAKE PHOENIX YOUR HOMESTEAD? “A lot. Homestead I feel like is by far my best racetrack. Phoenix I would say is probably my third or fourth-worst, so I knew it was gonna be an uphill battle. The three guys that are in this final four outside of us are really, really good race car drivers. They do a great job here and we knew it wasn’t gonna be easy coming into it and they just did a better job as a race car driver. I just have to do a lot better here, so definitely do a lot more homework and hopefully come back better.”

Ford Performance NASCAR: Austin Cindric Championship 4 Media Availability

AUSTIN CINDRIC, No. 22 Menards/Richmond Ford Mustang — WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT TRYING TO NAVIGATE THE TRACK ON SATURDAY AND BEATING THE OTHER GUYS? “It is a 200 lap race. There are 199 laps you can screw up and not put yourself in position on the most important one. With this format and with the way our races have gone over the last six weeks, I have been worried about points the entire time. Now I can just worry about where I finish. The stages are just time for me to drink water and get ready for another green flag run.”

HOW AGGRESSIVE DO YOU THINK IT WILL BE AMONG THE 4 COMPETITORS? “We have all watched the Xfinity races enough this year to know that we are going to be pretty aggressive as far as whether that is just packing air on each other or maybe some contact. I am not going to make any speculation but I am sure everyone will be giving 100 percent.”

AND YOU ARE WILLING TO BE AGGRESSIVE IF YOU HAVE TO? “I think I am not doing my job if I am not. I think you have to be fair. This is racing at a pretty high level and I think we are all professionals. I expect that out of my competitors, a professional level of racing. At the same time, I expect them to go for it.”

HAS THE DYNAMIC CHANGED AMONG YOU AND YOUR TEAM SINCE THE ANNOUNCEMENT THAT YOU WOULD BE BACK WITH THE 22 TEAM IN XFINITY NEXT YEAR? “I don’t think the team dynamic has changed a whole lot. I think approaching this weekend, that is the number one goal, to make it to Phoenix. For everyone on the team, myself included, this is the most important weekend and opportunity in my life and racing career as well as pretty much every single member of the team. I think the only one excluded would be Presley who has a shot to win a Cup championship the next day. From that side of things the team is in a great spot. I have a lot of guys that are very confident in my abilities and I am confident in theirs. It has been a fun team dynamic to have.”

HAS THERE BEEN A DECISION ON WHAT CUP RACES YOU WILL RUN NEXT YEAR? “There have been some discussions within the team. I think the first thing to get out there was the Xfinity schedule and understanding what that looks like from a personell side and what is possible. I think where my desires lie is that I want as much of a variety as possible. I want to learn as much as I can, whether there is putting myself at some tough race tracks or be able to go have some success at others that I feel strongly about. Then when it comes to partners, what racetracks make sense for the partners we will be able to have on those races. I think there are a couple of variables there but my desire is to have a variety.”

SO YOU DON’T WANT TO JUST DO ALL ROAD COURSES? “There are only six of those and there are 30-plus races. I feel like I would be doing myself a disservice to not go out and learn something but also perform well at some of the other types of race track. Whether that is a mile-and-a-half track or short track. The thing I need to keep in mind for my development is understanding does that NextGen car really relate well to that 550 package and the big splitter and big drag and so-on. Those are all things we are still considering and trying to figure out. I want to do as many ovals as road courses. I will say that I am extremely excited that Road America has a Cup race on the Fourth of July weekend. I think everyone is going to really enjoy that.”

WHAT WILL YOU REMEMBER THE 2020 SEASON FOR? “Well, there are a lot of things. The obvious within the industry but for our team it is that we did what we knew we have been capable of, whether that was halfway through last year or the start of 2019. For me as a driver, it has been gratifying to put that out there and not just feel that inside me but to also put that on paper. I think that has been an important part of this year and validating myself within the sport. On the flip side, it has been a little frustrating because I feel like there are a lot of races this year where we were either the best car and weren’t able to capitalize on it or had things out of our control put us out of position to win the race. I am very motivated for 2021 for those races in particular. When I say those races, I feel like there are quite a few. I am very excited to have an opportunity to go for it again. I think my team is excited for the same reasons. I am looking forward to having a shot this weekend as well as starting it all over again next year.”

DO YOU LOOK AT THIS RACE THIS WEEKEND AS YOU HAVE TO WIN THE RACE TO WIN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP? “Yeah. I think you have to approach Phoenix as a must-win situation. Just because the competitiveness this year has been off the charts. Also the unpredictability of who was going to be good on what day. I think that has been fun from a competitive side to try to figure out, but also anyone that has watched and enjoyed watching Xfinity races this year. I don’t think you can underestimate any of your competitors and you have to bring your best foot forward.”

CAN YOU TAKE ME THROUGH RESTARTS AT PHOENIX AND WHAT IT MIGHT BE LIKE THIS WEEKEND WITH THE CHOOSE RULE? “I think the choose rule definitely adds a small dynamic. I feel like for me the choose rule hasn’t been as effective. We go to a place like Martinsville and you figure there will be guys lined up on the bottom to make sure they won’t get lost in traffic but it really has been about if you can gain a row you take it. I don’t think that will play as big of a factor. I think depending on how the PJ1 comes in this weekend, that will play a role in what is the dominant lane. I think the other thing to consider is there are plenty of fast guys. Whether that is Harrison Burton who has won the last two races and has a shot to win pretty much most weeks. Guys like that and Brandon Jones, Ross Chastain that don’t have a shot to win the championship this weekend but are going to be racing aggressively to win the race. The restarts at Phoenix are always crazy to where we get six-wide on the apron trying to get track position. Inconsequentially, I think that could play a factor as far as the nature of the restarts at Phoenix.”

HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO BE RACED BY GUYS THAT ARE NOT CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDERS? “I have been in that position the last two years and I feel like I have been extremely respectful about the situations. That has been at Homestead, so that is something that I am just as interested about as well. I don’t expect to be given any breaks, but some respect definitely needs to be given in those situations as far as when it comes to racing people hard for a position that you probably don’t already have. That is the place where I feel like as competitors this year in the Xfinity Series we push that envelope pretty hard. I hope there is enough respect for everyone’s situation. If there is not, oh well. I can’t affect it.”

WHO ARE YOU HAVING WITH YOU AT THE TRACK THIS WEEKEND? “I can’t remember if they were able to go to Charlotte or not, but both of my parents will be at the race track. I am excited for that. My dad in general doesn’t usually get to watch me race very often but my mom comes to almost all my races and hasn’t been able to come to almost any this year. I am sure they are both excited for that opportunity as well as some of the leadership within our team. Some of the guys haven’t really seen a race since the Daytona 500 and now they have a shot to go watch on Saturday and Sunday and see their cars race for a championship. I am very excited about that opportunity and hopefully get to warm up the crowd there on Saturday and cheer the boys on on Sunday.”

WHY HAVE WE NOT SEEN A SCENARIO WITH THE CHOOSE RULE WHERE ALL BUT A COUPLE CARS CHOOSE ONE LINE? “I feel like that is a two-part answer I guess. One, I feel like the speeds of our race tracks are much higher than the speeds of the tracks that traditionally use the choose rule. Whether it be a quarter-mile Legends race or a ⅜ mile oval or whatever it may be. I feel like we are going a lot faster and have a lot more time to make up speed and aerodynamics play a huge role in that. Track position plays a huge role in that. If you can gain a row, that is track position. From that standpoint I feel like that is why it hasn’t been maybe as effective as maybe you would have hoped. On the flip side, at the back of the field it is really difficult to pick and choose and understand what is a gain and what isn’t a gain. I am sure there is probably more analysis on the Cup side when you have a top-20 that is extremely competitive. I feel like that is the hardest part about the choose rule, not when you are top-five or top-10 but when you are back top-15 or top-20.”

CHASE BRISCOE AND AUSTIN CINDRIC CHAMPIONSHIP 4 MEDIA AVAILABILITY

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 98 HighPoint.com Ford Mustang — HOW IS EVERYTHING GOING WITH YOU AND MARISSA? “It’s been a crazy week. Fortunately, I mean, it’s never a good thing, but we were way earlier this time than we were the last time. After the first time we had a miscarraige, the amount of outreach from people we felt like it helped making it public. We just felt the same way this time and, honestly, Marissa, it just helps her a lot whenever she can read other peoples’ comments, tweets and all these things. That’s another reason we’ve just kind of been open about it and I feel like it helps me too going to the racetrack. If I was going through that and nobody knew what I was going through or just the stress or whatever at home just makes it a lot easier for me to have people know what’s going on, instead of trying to hide it. It’s definitely been a very unfortunate week, it’s been a tough week, it’s been really hard on Marissa and obviously it’s been hard on me as well. We’re trying to stay positive and get through this week, and then figure out what we’ve got to do going forward.”

DO YOU FEEL READY TO RACE? ARE YOU CLEAR AND READY? “Yeah, absolutely. I feel like I’ve always done a good job at kind of keeping the two separate and, truthfully, it doesn’t motivate me more but just helps me get in the race car and get away and really focus. I feel 100 percent ready to go this week, no different than any other week.”

HOW CONFIDENT ARE YOU HEADING INTO PHOENIX AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN THE LAST TIME YOU WERE THERE? “I felt like we made some good gains the last time we were there. I feel like the results didn’t necessarily show the speed that we had. We had a miscue on pit road towards the end of the race and had to go to the back and got back to sixth, so I felt speed-wise we were pretty good. Statistically, it’s not my best racetrack, but we still won nine races this year. The confidence is high. I feel like we’ve been the best team all year long and there’s no reason why we can’t go to Phoenix and be the same way. I feel like we’re going in there with nothing to lose and everything to gain. We’ve just got to go there and do our normal deal no different than all the other 32 races. If we just go there and focus on the 98 car and nobody else, I feel like we’re gonna be in the hunt at least at the end and as long as you’re in the hunt, you’ve got a chance for it, so that’s what we’ll try to go do.”

DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH DURING THE OFFSEASON? “I’d like to probably get in a little bit better shape just going into next year with the length of the races and just kind of really focus on that side of things, just being as physically prepared as possible going into next year. I’ve talked to quite a few of the Cup guys and they don’t feel like the physical side running those long races is necessarily any tougher, but I just feel like that’s something I could definitely improve on if I had to pinpoint one area. It’s a short offseason with all the preparation you’ve got to get going ready for Daytona and it’s just a quick turnaround in general. Plus, I’ll do some midget racing in the offseason, so just trying to get better in shape overall — physically, mentally, all those things just trying to be ready for next year.”

MARISSA TWEETED YOU HAD SOME GOOD BABY NEWS TO SHARE. CAN YOU UPDATE US? “I don’t want to go into it too much because I don’t know what she wants the world to know and what she doesn’t want the world to know, but really just kind of the next process of talking to her doctors about why it’s been happening and what the next prevention measure, I guess, could be — the next kind of thing we can try. I’ll let Marissa talk about it if she wants to say more of the details, but the doctors feel a lot more confident that this will kind of help our situation with what Marissa deals with, so hopefully that will be something going forward that will help. It’s obviously been super hard on both of us, especially Marissa, so I don’t want to say. I don’t want Marissa mad at me, but it’s kind of the next process and kind of the next thing to try in our path of trying to have a kid.”

WHAT WOULD IT MEAN FOR YOU TO WIN THE TITLE WITH THE PERSONAL CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED, AND HAS THAT HURT OR ENHANCED YOUR PERFORMANCE ON THE TRACK? “I feel like no matter how high the high is on the racetrack it never compares to the low, but it does help balance it out a little bit. It would be obviously great to win the championship. I don’t know if it necessarily gives me anymore motivation one way or the other. I’m going every week to win the race no matter what happens during the week, so it would be great to win the championship, but I don’t think that necessarily helps the low of lows. But it has been a really unique season for everybody just with Covid and everybody has kind of had a rough year, and it’s been no different on our part, but there are people that have had a way worse year than we’ve had, so I’m just very fortunate that we had the potential and the possibility to kind of have those high moments still because there are a lot of people that are stuck at home that can’t do anything, where they can achieve any of those things. So for us to be able to kind of have something that can potentially offset the lows certainly helps.”

WILL YOUR WIFE BE THERE THIS WEEKEND? WHAT WOULD IT MEAN TO CELEBRATE A TITLE WITH HER? “That’s a great point. She’s only been to Bristol, but she wasn’t able to celebrate. They didn’t allow anybody to come down there, where for the championship they will. As of right now, she plans on going to Phoenix unless something crazy happens. She’s terrified of flying and normally a 20-minute flight has her freaking out and Phoenix is obviously a lot more than 20 minutes, so she’s trying to muster up the courage to go out there, but hopefully she’ll be there and hopefully I can win the race and the championship and we can finally have that moment to celebrate together. I feel like it would be good for both of us. She really hasn’t been there for a lot of my wins in general this year. She’s only been able to go to that one race and didn’t get to celebrate after and outside of that she’s only been at the Roval and when I won at Iowa, so we haven’t really got to celebrate a lot of success together on the racetrack, so this would be the biggest one to this point and hopefully she can make the flight and then, secondly, I can win the championship.”

IN PAST RACES YOU’VE WON HOW WOULD YOU CELEBRATE WITH HER? “Normally, I’ll just Facetime her afterwards after the media or before I go do the media, and then when I get home it’s normally so late she’s asleep anyways and we just wake up the next morning and it’s just a normal day. Just being able to finally celebrate with her and get to see her emotion because normally I don’t get to see the raw emotion right after a win, so hopefully it happens and hopefully we can have that moment.”

WHEN HARVICK GOT KNOCKED OUT LAST WEEK HE SAID WINNING ALL THOSE RACES DURING THE REGULAR SEASON IS WHAT IT WAS ALL ABOUT. IS THAT WHAT IT’S ABOUT OR WOULD IT BE A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT NOT TO WIN THE TITLE AT THIS POINT? “I think that’s a great question and one that with today’s playoff format technically you could win the first 35 races of the year and blow a motor early and you’re fourth in the championship. I don’t think you can let winning a championship necessarily define your season. If you win two or three races and you win the championship, then I would say, yeah, it defines your season because you’re the champion, but if you have a year like Harvick had, where you win nine races and you don’t even make the final four and you don’t win the championship, I don’t think you can say, ‘Hey, this year was a failure,’ because winning nine races is a phenomenal year, so, yeah, you’re gonna be disappointed if you don’t win the championship, but, at the same time, we’ve won more races than anybody else all year long and that’s what you start the season to do. You try to go there and win every race and win as much as possible and we’ve been very fortunate to be able to do that. Yeah, we’re going there to win the championship, but, at the end of the day, whether we finish first or fourth we’ve had a really good season and one to be proud of and hopefully we can win the championship.”

WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE WHERE YOU WERE AND NOW WHERE YOU ARE? “It’s unbelievable and crazy to think about. Whether you go back five years when I was literally just walking into random race shops trying to let me volunteer and sleep on couches. And even going back to literally this weekend last year, I had no ride. And now to have a 25 percent chance to win the championship and won nine races this year and be going into the Cup Series next year for not only my dream team, but my dream number, all of those things are just so crazy to think about. It’s been an unbelievable journey the last five or six years and I’ve certainly been blessed to be able to get to this point, and the way it’s all happened and came full circle has just been really unbelievable to think about.”

THE OTHER THREE DRIVERS WILL BE BACK IN THE SERIES NEXT YEAR. IS THERE ANY URGENCY THAT THIS COULD BE THE LAST TIME YOU WORK WITH THIS GROUP FOR A WHILE? “I think, for me, you always want to go out on top anytime you leave any team or any series. You want to leave on top. You want to feel like you didn’t leave anything on the table and I’ve been super fortunate. In ARCA I was able to win the last race of the season and win the championship. In the Truck Series I was able to win the last race that season and that’s always been as I’ve progressed to the next year. Hopefully, the third time continues to be that way, but you definitely want to do that. You want to reward those guys. I’ve been with the 98 team for two and a half years now and without those guys there’s no way I would be moving on to the 14, so I want to say thank you to those guys and I want to give them a championship. That’s what they all deserve. They’ve worked so hard, not only this year but the last two and a half years and you want to go out and you definitely have a little bit of added pressure, I think, just in general of wanting to make those guys proud and want to go out on top as a team.”

WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR PHOENIX? “I think for me just the racetrack. Not that I don’t get around Phoenix great, I just simply haven’t had the success that I’d like to have there. It’s a place I’ve always kind of struggled to just get the balance that I need. I think that’s the biggest thing at night is just constantly, ‘All right, what am I doing wrong and what am I telling the team that I need different?’ Because I feel like in practice I can get the car to drive good or maybe it’s not driving how I want it to, but then I’m faster and just kind of that balance of what you need versus what the car is doing. I think that’s the hardest thing for me and, truthfully, I’m kind of excited for no practice just because I feel like I tune myself out every time we go to Phoenix. I kind of think I need one thing and the race starts and it’s the total opposite, so, hopefully, the no practicing will kind of bode well for us. I feel like we have a pretty good baseline of where we need to be. Being fortunate enough to be locked in these last couple weeks has allowed us to really focus on Phoenix and go to the simulator and do all these things and, hopefully, that will all correlate over to real life and we’ll have a good balance.”

IS PART OF IT MENTAL WHEN A DRIVER DOESN’T HAVE SUCCESS AT A TRACK? “For sure. I think confidence is such a big deal. I feel like my confidence level this year has been a lot of the reason just for the success. When you’re confident you’re not second guessing things you’re doing on the racetrack, you’re just reacting and going. When you go into a racetrack that you’re confident at, you normally run good. For me, statistically I haven’t ran there great, but just trying to keep in the back of your mind that we’ve won nine races this year. We’re gonna be fast. We’ve kind of been the guy to beat all year long and there’s no reason why going to Phoenix we can’t be that same way, so just trying to keep that mentality and that confidence I think will go a long way. It’s not that we’ve been slow at Phoenix it’s just results-wise things haven’t gone our way at the end of races. We don’t have the wins that we’d like to have, so hopefully we can change that this weekend.”

HAVE YOU REACHED OUT TO KEVIN HARVICK FOR THIS WEEKEND? “Obviously, with everything going on in the playoffs I haven’t reached out to bother him. I know he’s got a lot going on and then this week I know he’s probably bummed out, so I’ll call him probably on Saturday, truthfully. I’ve kind of been letting him have his space. I know he’s a super busy guy. I think the plan was for him to come on Monday and help with the simulator and then after everything on Sunday we didn’t even reach back out. We just let him kind of have his space, so I’ll call him before Saturday. I’ll probably honestly even talk to Tony. He always got around there pretty good, so just trying to use all those things. I’ve talked to Kevin in the past at Phoenix. Last year I went and stood on their trailer all of practice with Rodney and just tried to listen and learn, so I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of what I need to go around there, it’s just kind of talking to Kevin and even Tony to kind of just get a refresher of what I need.”

“We’ve done it! We’ve made it to the final four. That’s the whole point of the season. The whole goal of the season is to rack up wins and rack up enough points to get ourselves into the final four. We had some difficulties in Martinsville, but we were able to overcome them just barely enough to lock ourselves into the championship four.

I can’t wait to get to Phoenix. We’ve been super good there in the past. I’ve been good there. I have sat on the pole there I believe in a K&N car, and I ran up front in the trucks. I’m looking forward to it. Our short-track program is amazing. I know Phoenix isn’t quite a short track – it’s called an intermediate, but it’s a short track in our eyes. We’ve been doing a lot of simulator time getting prepped for this at Chevrolet. I can’t thank everyone at LeafFilter Gutter Protection and Kaulig Racing enough for getting this No. 11 car into the final four. We’ve got a shot at it, and that’s all you can ask for as a driver. Hopefully we hit the set up perfectly, and we can drive away into the sunset with a championship come Saturday.”

Ross Chastain Quote“We’re going to Phoenix. Justin Haley and the LeafFilter Gutter Protection car have a chance at the championship! I’m so excited for those guys – Alex Yontz and everyone on that car. This No. 10 team is going to go finish fifth in the points after we win this race and end the season on a high note. We had a really fast car there in the spring, but we had one small power-steering leak. We lost power steering, but we were able to get it fixed and get back on the lead lap late in the race and finish 10th. I know we will have the speed, so we will go spoil the party and try to just outrun everybody. We’ve shown the speed all year, and if we get the car working good and turning good in the center up in that VHT spray, the sticky spray painted high in the corners, I think the track will migrate up there.

I’ve got a lot of family coming out. We are going to have some good times out in phoenix, enjoy a little vacation, and finish this season on a high note. Check us out Saturday in the Nutrien Ag Solutions car – the final race in our black and green colors this Saturday.”
