Race: Drive for the Cure 250 presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina

No. 22 Wurth Ford Mustang – Austin Cindric
    Start: 11th
    Stage 1: 13th
    Stage 2: 4th
    Finish: 6th
    Status: Running
    Laps Completed: 68/68
    Laps Led: 0
Point Standings (behind first): 2nd (-10)

    Notes:

Austin Cindric started 11th and finished sixth in the most unpredictable race of the 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series season Saturday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL. The driver of the WURTH Ford used his 23rd top-10 finish of the season to advance to the Round of 8 in the NASCAR Playoffs. Cindric showed speed early in the dry conditions but torrential rain soon began to fall, forcing the team into a conservative strategy to ensure they’d advance in the playoffs.

At the onset of the race, Cindric made a power move at the drop of the green flag, stacking traffic four-wide into Turn 1 and picking off six positions in the opening lap with the No. 22 Wurth Ford Mustang. The team elected to put on rain tires under the first caution on lap 4 plus make a significant chassis adjustment preparing for the wet conditions, which had arrived as quickly as the race began. Unfortunately, NASCAR was forced to throw the yellow flag again at lap 15 for unsafe conditions as the rain intensified and the track accumulated standing water.

Cindric took a cautious approach to the remaining laps in the first stage, remaining focused on the championship pursuit, and was credited with a 13th-place finish position when the segment ended on lap 20. He relayed to crew chief Brian Wilson during the stage caution that he was too tight to make any progress through the field, so Wilson made the call to pit and put on the team’s final set of rain tires on plus make a significant air pressure adjustment to the front tires.

The adjustments greatly improved the handling of the Wurth Mustang. Cindric moved from outside the top-20 to 15th position before the race was halted again on lap 30 for standing water on the track, delaying the event for an hour.
When racing resumed, Cindric picked his way through a multi-vehicle incident in Turn 4, moving his No. 22 Mustang back inside the top-10. When the green-flag was displayed again, Cindric picked up four positions, returning to the top-five before the sixth caution was displayed on lap 38.

With a spot in the Round of Eight within reach, Cindric settled back into a conservative rhythm, logging laps after pitting for fuel to make the finish as darkness began to settle over Charlotte Motor Speedway. As other competitors continued to have issues, Cindric clinched his place in the Round of 8 during the final stage and set his sights on finishing the race in treacherous conditions fueled by heavy rain and dwindling daylight. He stayed out of trouble and cleanly logged laps to the finish and was rewarded with a sixth-place finish at the checkered flag.
Cindric opens the Round of 8 at Kansas Speedway next Saturday, second in the standings, trailing the lead by only 10 points.

Quote: “Advancing to the Round of 8 is a box checked for us. Obviously, we weren’t in a super tight spot heading into today, but that was kind of my only goal after it started raining. I got off to a pretty aggressive foot there to try and establish track position in the dry, and I think that got us the fastest lap of the race as well, so that’s a positive. After it started raining we were pretty conservative as far as my driving, the strategy and after we got into a place where we could advance I started being able to peck my way up through the field and finish inside the top-10 with our WURTH Ford Mustang.”

    SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2020
DRIVE FOR THE CURE 250 – CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY
FORD PERFORMANCE DRIVER – POST RACE QUOTES

    FORD FINISHING RESULTS:
    6th — Austin Cindric
    7th — Cody Ware
    18th — Chase Briscoe

AUSTIN CINDRIC, No. 22 Wurth Ford Mustang — “I think a top-five effort was pretty likely there. I probably made one small mistake that kept our Wurth Ford Mustang out of the top five, but to race a car in the dark, in very, very wet conditions, pouring down rain with no headlights, no tail lights, splitter clearances being at dry minimums, I can assure you that no other race car can experience what we experienced today in our race for better or for worse. I’m sure it was entertainment for anyone at home, but I look forward to Kansas, Texas, Martinsville and Phoenix surely just for the fact that we don’t have to do that again.”

THE GOOD NEWS IS YOU ADVANCE TO THE ROUND OF 8. HOW DOES THE NEXT ROUND SET UP FOR YOU? “Advancing to the Round of 8 is a box checked for us. Obviously, we weren’t in a super tight spot heading into today, but that was kind of my only goal after it started raining. I got off to a pretty aggressive foot there to try and establish track position in the dry, and I think that got us the fastest lap of the race as well, so that’s a positive. That will help us out tremendously at Kansas, so looking forward to that, but after it started raining we were pretty conservative as far as my driving, the strategy and after we got into a place where we could advance I started being able to peck my way up through the field and get us to where we could finish inside the top 10 and maybe have a little more clear visibility than back in the twenties.”

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 98 Ford Performance Racing School Ford Mustang — WHAT HAPPENED OFF TURN ONE? “The driver just made a mistake. In the conditions like this you’ve got to be at 100 percent and I tried going 110 and it bit me, so very unfortunate. That one is gonna sting for a long time. I felt like I did my job for about 95 percent of the day right and I just knew if AJ was beside me getting into three, he had been running me up so much I tried throttling up and I was in first gear and I just hit the puddle and it spun me out. That was frustrating to say the least. We obviously had a really good Ford Performance Racing School/HighPoint.com Mustang, but didn’t get it in victory lane, so we’ll try to do it next week.”

YOU JUST WENT DOOR TO DOOR WITH A GREAT ROAD COURSE RACER IN AJ. IS THERE ANY SOLACE IN THAT? “It’s encouraging for sure to run with AJ, but the end result is he won the race and I came in 17th. I’m gonna think about that one a lot laying in bed. I know what I did wrong. That’s the frustrating part and just try to learn from it and move on.”

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE RESTART? “I just messed up. I wish I could have got the win. It’s a hometown race for both of our sponsors. Obviously, the racing school is based out of right here and HighPoint.com is down the road in Ballentine, so it would have been a big day. I did 95 percent of the day right and that’s 100 percent on me at the end. That last restart I knew if AJ was beside me getting into three he was gonna try to run me up the racetrack and I tried throttling up and I just hit a puddle wrong when I did it and messed up. That one is on me. We’ll go onto Kansas and have a short memory. Next week is a lot more important than today was, so we’ll go onto Kansas and try to get a win.”

For Graf Jr., 22, Watchonista is the third new partner that he has brought to the NASCAR Xfinity Series scene since returning from the COVID-19 pandemic in May.

Collectively, Graf Jr. and Watchonista are committed to growing their relationship both on and off the track heading into the 2021 season.

“I’m super excited to welcome Watchonista to NASCAR and have them be a part of the NASCAR Xfinity Series with SS GreenLight Racing,” offered Graf Jr. “I’m a frequent visitor to the site being an avid collector of many things myself and to be able to bring this partnership to fruition is a testament to a lot of hard work and Watchonista eager to expand their horizons.

“Hopefully, we can have a strong finish on Saturday for Watchonista, WAX Insurance, STANDARD H, and Cantonment and then work on building our partnership for years to come.”

“We just got done with Talladega – what an awesome week to get my third win in that beautiful looking LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevrolet for Kaulig Racing. I couldn’t be more happy for everyone at Kaulig Racing, LeafFilter and all of our partners for going out there and getting the job done and locking ourselves into the round of eight. This weekend we have the ROVAL at Charlotte Motor Speedway. We broke last year, but we’ve been fast. We finished second at the Indy ROVAL, so I’m expecting some good stuff. My teammate, AJ Allmendinger, won the ROVAL race last year, so I know we’ve got speed in our cars. I’m really hopeful for this weekend. There’s some rain in the forecast, which I am in love with, because we won a stage in the rain at Road America. I’ve got a little rain racing experience myself. I cannot wait to get that LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevrolet up front. We’re starting up front, due to our amazing win last weekend, so hopefully we can keep her there and get win number four.”

If I can see AJ Allmendinger and Justin Haley all day I think I’ll be doing ok, because they’re both really fast every weekend, but especially on the road courses. I still have a lot to learn about turning right and how to do it efficiently. That’s going to be my main focus — doing everything efficiently to take care of my drive line, because I haven’t always done that. Hopefully we can get Nutrien Ag Solutions and Kaulig Racing the finish we deserve”

    Driver Quotes

“To have a runner-up finish taken away in post-race inspection this close to the cutoff race was a tough blow. We were in the playoffs at that point, too. That leaves us a lot of work to do this weekend at the Roval. Travis Mack and the No. 1 team have given me fast Pilot Flying J Chevrolets all year long, and the key to finishing well in these road-course events is to stay on the track. We’ll do that and do everything we can to win the race and keep going in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs.” – Michael Annett

“Being in the position we’re in after Talladega makes me that much more thankful for the wins and bonus points we earned before the playoffs. We definitely wish we had more of a cushion heading into to the Roval this weekend, but we’re still above the cutline and I feel like we’ve got a good track record on road courses. We just need to have a solid day, make no mistakes and maximize stage points with our BRANDT Camaro. I’m looking forward to the challenge and I know that I’ve got the best team that I could possibly have to get things done and move on to the next round.” – Justin Allgaier

“Any opportunity to race here in Charlotte is extremely special to me. From growing up racing on the quarter-mile here to competing across all three series here, it just carries a special meaning, especially since this is my home track. I feel really confident that we will unload with a really fast OnDeck Capital Chevrolet on Saturday. I have always enjoyed this layout at the Roval and road-course racing as a whole has been something that I’ve always enjoyed doing. So hopefully we can have a solid day and get this No. 8 team into the Round of 8 for the owner’s championship.” – Daniel Hemric

“I’m really looking forward to racing at the Charlotte Roval this weekend in my Lionel Racing Camaro. I enjoy road-course racing and have had success at road courses but the only thing I haven’t done yet is win at one in the Xfinity Series. That is the goal for this weekend to advance us into the Round of 8 and to give us a few extra playoff points along the way to help us further down the road.” – Noah Gragson

    JRM Team Updates:
    • JRM at the Roval: In eight previous starts at the Roval at Charlotte Motor Speedway, JRM has recorded two top fives and four top 10s with a best finish of fourth coming in this event last season with Justin Allgaier.
    • JRM on Road Courses: JRM has netted four wins, 30 top fives and 65 top 10s in 125 starts on road courses in the NXS. Ron Fellows and Regan Smith earned the organization’s first two road course victories at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal in 2008 and at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 2015, while Justin Allgaier went to Victory Lane at Mid-Ohio and Road America in 2018.

Like Father, Like Son: Harrison Burton Making His Own Opportunities

    • Nineteen-year-old Harrison Burton has taken lessons he learned from his father, accomplished racer and current NBC broadcaster Jeff Burton, to heart as he’s embarked upon his own racing career
    • Burton, a NASCAR Xfinity Series rookie, will compete to earn his spot in the Round of Eight this Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Drive for the Cure 250 at America’s Home for Racing

CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 5, 2020) – From the outside, it may seem as though Harrison Burton’s road to the NASCAR Xfinity Series has been an easy one. However, just because his father – accomplished racer and current NBC broadcaster Jeff Burton – enjoyed a fruitful NASCAR career, there was no guarantee Harrison Burton would enjoy that same success. The younger Burton will look to continue to build a name for himself this weekend, seeking his third win of the season at the Drive for the Cure 250 presented by BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina on Saturday.

“I think everyone has to work super hard. You don’t get to the Xfinity Series, Truck Series or Cup Series without being really, really darn good,” the younger Burton said. “I think the thing that taught me that was watching my dad do it growing up.

“He was always at the shop. He was always working out. He was always, always working to be a better race car driver. That was really something I was proud of as a kid, watching my dad do his thing and be who he was. That was something I wanted to be like when I got bigger.”

Harrison Burton, who will turn 20 on Oct. 9, started in quarter midgets and progressed up the ranks, finding success at nearly every level. He’s won multiple times in asphalt late model competition, claimed the ARCA Menards Series East championship in 2017 and earned three ARCA Menards Series victories by the time he turned 18.

“If you go back and look at his whole career, he’s never really had a chance to just sit back, settle in and spend two or three years doing something,” Jeff Burton explained. “I think it has made him better. I think it has made him appreciate opportunities. I think it’s put him in situations where he has had a chance to learn.”

When Harrison Burton was announced as part of the Joe Gibbs Racing Xfinity Series team prior to this season, some questioned his selection. They pointed to his lackluster 2019 season driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series. Entering the season, he was considered a title contender, but he failed to win or make the Truck Series playoffs.

The haters were quickly silenced early this year when Burton claimed his first NASCAR Xfinity Series victory at California’s Auto Club Speedway. He backed it up by collecting another victory a few months later at Florida’s Homestead-Miami Speedway.

So why is Harrison Burton so good behind the wheel at such a young age?

“Number one, he has talent, right? Talent can be nurtured to a point, but there’s also a certain amount of talent that where you’re not able to be competitive as you step up through the ranks,” Jeff Burton explained. “He’s fortunate enough to have some talent that God gave him. He doesn’t have that without also appreciating and understanding that if he doesn’t work really hard every day, he won’t be successful.”

Harrison Burton’s work ethic has gotten him this far. As a rookie, he qualified for the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs, which gives him a shot at winning the series championship. If he’s going to do that, he’ll first need to survive the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL™.

Lucky for Burton, he competed on the ROVAL™ last year in the Xfinity Series, so he’s not entering the Oct. 10 Drive for the Cure 250 presented by BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina completely green.

“That’s an advantage I think, just knowing the racetrack and being on kind of a level playing field with the guys you’re racing against to try to win a championship,” Burton said. “I think I’ve learned a lot from then until now, and I’m excited to go back and try it again.”

Burton enters the race 10th in the Xfinity Series Playoffs standings, just six points below the cutline to advance to the second round.

Justin Haley Emerges From “Darkhorse” to Victor in Chaotic Finish to Ag-Pro 300 At TALLADEGA

    • Haley Wins Third Consecutive NASCAR Xfinity Series Superspeedway Race Following Wins at Talladega Superspeedway & Daytona International Speedway This Season
    • Kaulig Racing’s Win Locks the No. 11 into the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs

TALLADEGA, Ala (Oct. 3, 2020) – With “Darkhorse” written above his door, Justin Haley drove his No. 11 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet through the field in some chaotic final laps of the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff race at NASCAR’s Most Competitive track on Saturday, to capture the checkered flag in the Ag-Pro 300 At TALLADEGA. Haley only led two of 113 laps, but they were the most important laps as he notched his third win of the Xfinity Series season.

“We were so far back with 10 to go,” said Haley. “Matt Kaulig (team owner), we love you! Three (superspeedway wins) in a row. I guess I told you earlier I wasn’t saying it’s luck but three in a row is pretty hard to do on luck. Just super thankful. This is such a blessing.”

The celebration was Haley’s third consecutive Xfinity win at a “super” superspeedway (Talladega Superspeedway & Daytona International Speedway) as he took the checkered flag in the Unhinged 300 at Talladega on June 20 and Wawa 250 Powered by Coca-Cola on Aug. 28. The first two victories were part of the Xfinity Series regular season. Haley swept the season at Talladega, which hosted two Xfinity races in the same year for the first time in its history. In his career at Talladega, Haley has two wins and three top-10 finishes in four races. It was also Haley’s 18th top-10 finish of 2020.

“The ‘Darkhouse’ nickname has been with me since the truck days when I was at GMS and went all the way to the final four and had a chance at the championship,” continued Haley. “A lot of people doubted my existence even in the playoffs that year and I’ve just always felt like an underdog…I’m here to race and I’m here to win. I could really care less about anything else. I’ve just always been overlooked. That’s just how it is.”

Michael Annett finished second in his JR Motorsports No. 1 Chevrolet after “the big one” occurred at the start-finish line as the white-flag flew for the final lap. Ryan Sieg, driver of the No. 39 RSS Racing Chevrolet, finished third followed by Noah Gragson in the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevrolet and Brandon Jones in the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

The Ag-Pro 300 At TALLADEGA was the second of seven races in the Xfinity Series playoffs, the middle event of the opening three-race Round of 12. Chase Briscoe, driver of the No. 98 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford, had already clinched a spot in the Round of 8 with last weekend’s victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Briscoe was dominant throughout, leading a race-high 73 laps, but conflict with Gragson shuffled him out of contention in the final laps and leaving him with a 20th-place finish.

“At the end you are doing everything you can to protect the runs and (Gragson) is doing everything he can to make moves,” said Briscoe. “It is just part of racing here. It was exciting, at least on my end.”

“I about wrecked two or three times trying to block. He had talked to Dale (Earnhardt Jr.) about how to run this place and I had talked to Dale about how to run this place and it was weird because I knew what he was trying to do every time so I was trying to protect it.”

Briscoe won the first two stages of the race with his fellow Ford driver, Austin Cindric in the No. 22 for Team Penske, close behind in second. In the third stage on Lap 76, Austin Cindric and Austin Hill got knocked out of line as several teams were getting ready to head down to pit road and each slammed into the inside retaining wall.

“I had no chance of even making it to pit road,” said Cindric. “Really unfortunate. I really wanted to have a great run. Ran up front all day, unfortunately, circumstances kept me and (Briscoe) from being up front there. Really sucks, but it’s part of racing.”

Briscoe and Haley are now locked into the Round 8 of the Xfinity Series Playoffs. In the Xfinity Playoff standings, Briscoe leads followed by Cindric (+46), Gragson (+43), Brandon Jones (+30), Sieg (+23), Justin Allgaier (+25), and Ross Chastain (+3). On the cutline bubble is Annett (-3), Harrison Burton (-7), Brandon Brown (-19), and Riley Herbst (-33).

For the first time in history, the Xfinity Series, which has been a staple during the track’s springtime weekend since 1992, competed twice in the same season at NASCAR’s Most Competitive venue. The addition of the Ag-Pro 300 At TALLADEGA came as part of a realignment from the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course event, originally set for May 30. The Ag-Pro At TALLADEGA continues a strong partnership between the 2.66-mile track and Ag-Pro Companies, which is also the Official Tractor Dealer of Talladega Superspeedway.

The Ag-Pro 300 At TALLADEGA was a part of a double-dose of action on Saturday, with the Chevy Silverado 250 NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series held earlier in the day. Raphael Lessard won the event while Christian Eckes was eliminated from Playoff contention. The Chevy Silverado 300 was the second race in the Round of 12 for the Xfinity Series.

Sunday’s anchor event, the YellaWood 500 for the NASCAR Cup Series, is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. CDT start. The race will play a pivotal role in NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs, serving as the second race (of three) in the Round of 12.
