    This Week in Motorsports: July 1 – 7, 2024

    • NCS/NXS: Chicago Street Race – July 6-7
    • ARCA WEST: Irwindale Speedway – July 4 & 6

PLANO, Texas (July 3, 2024) – NASCAR returns to the streets of Chicago for the second time with the Cup and Xfinity Series on Independence Day Weekend. The ARCA Menards Series West holds two races this weekend at Irwindale Speedway out in California.

NASCAR National Series – NCS | NXS

Bell takes over Playoff points lead … Sunday’s frantic race in Nashville further shook up the NASCAR Cup Series points as the Playoffs continue to get closer. After sweeping the stages Sunday afternoon, Christopher Bell now leads the Playoff standings with 24 playoff points and sits sixth in the overall championship points going into the weekend. The Oklahoma native has the most Cup Series stage wins (nine) to go along with his three race victories so far this season.

Hamlin looks for Chicago pole repeat … Capturing his 42nd career pole in Nashville, Denny Hamlin will look for his second straight this weekend in Chicago, where he grabbed the inaugural pole position last season. Hamlin had three poles on road courses last season and looks to add a third pole in 2024 to go along with those he captured in Nashville and Phoenix.

Reddick seeks to continue top-10 streak … Coming up just short of his second win this season, Tyler Reddick finished third in Nashville, earning his fifth top-10 finish in the last six races. The result also gave Reddick his 12th top-10 this season, which is the most in the Cup Series. Reddick showed promise on the streets of Chicago a season ago, starting second and leading eight laps as he looks to extend his streak this weekend.

Three-peat on the line at Chicago … Following the dominant victory by John Hunter Nemechek last Saturday in Nashville, Toyota and the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing GR Supra each seek three consecutive NASCAR Xfinity Series wins this weekend in Chicago. Nemechek followed up Bell’s win in New Hampshire two weeks ago as the No. 20 team now has five victories in 2024, also entering victory lane earlier this year with Ryan Truex and Aric Almirola. Nemechek will once again pilot the No. 20 this weekend on the Chicago streets, where he finished second last year in the rain-shortened race.

Karam returns to No. 26 … For the first time since Portland back in June, Sage Karam is back behind the wheel of the No. 26 GR Supra for Sam Hunt Racing. Karam ran on the streets of Chicago a year ago where he started 11th and finished 22nd. The Pennsylvania native looks to improve upon his best finish so far this season of 17th at COTA.

NASCAR Regional Series – ARCA Menards Series West

Robusto eager to continue top-10 streak … Heading into the doubleheader weekend at Irwindale Speedway, Isabella Robusto looks to keep her top-10 streak alive to start off the 2024 ARCA Menards Series West season. The 19-year-old has been inside the top-six specifically in all three ARCA West races thus far, including a third-place finish at Portland.

I’m looking forward to seeing what my Wendy’s Saucy Nuggs Chevrolet can accomplish this weekend. It’s not going to be easy; it’s going to be a challenge but it’s going to be fun and hopefully better weather! • At this course last season, Mayer was on a fast track to the front until the rain delayed chaos subjected the young driver to an 18th-place effort.

    • Mayer and JRM welcome new partner PCI to ride along side the No. 1 Chevrolet Camaro in the streets of Chicago.

    Sam Mayer

“I am for sure ready for a change of pace in tracks so I am pumped to get back to the Chicago Street Course. Last season at this course, it was hard to really get a feel for the track with all of the different weather hurdles we faced. Road courses have been really good to us in the past so I am looking forward to getting our left and right turns in at Chicago this weekend. Hopefully we get a chance to drive this No. 1 PCI Chevrolet into Victory Lane.”

Hopefully this weekend the weather will stay clear and we can go out and put on a great show. I know that everyone on this No. 7 team is fired up, especially Jim (Pohlman, crew chief). It’s definitely a unique experience to be racing on a street course, but I know that we will have a good game plan when we hit the track. Cole Custer Notes of Interest

    • Cole Custer and his NASCAR Xfinity Series counterparts are trading in the oval tracks for the unpredictability of the Chicago Street Course in Saturday’s The Loop 121 in downtown Chicago. The Ladera Ranch, California native who scored his second of three wins of 2023 in the inaugural Chicago Street Race a year ago, hits town riding a streak of consistency. He’s scored top-10s in 14 of the past 15 races, including each of the last five, starting with his sixth-place finish June 1 at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway and culminating with his ninth-place finish last Saturday at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway. At Nashville, he qualified second, just .051 of a second shy of his third pole earned this season. He led twice for 64 laps and tallied a total of 15 stage points throughout the race. While he fell back in the final stage due to struggles with his long-run speed, he was able to hold on for a solid ninth-place result, equaling his previous best at the track, earned in June 2023. Custer’s 14th top-10 of the season was his second in a row at Nashville, and he leads the regular-season points standings with a 15-point advantage over Chandler Smith. He’s dealt with the difficulty of the summer heat and rain storms in recent weeks, and now he’ll be presented with a different challenge during NASCAR’s return to the streets of Chicago for the second year in a row.
    • Custer was up for the challenge in last year’s inaugural event, posting the fastest lap in practice before earning the pole for the race. The 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion led all 25 laps prior to a torrential downpour that brought out the red flag and eventually led NASCAR officials to call the race before its halfway point, giving Custer his second win of 2023 in unprecedented fashion.
    • Custer will sport the bright and vibrant colors of Andy’s Frozen Custard once again this weekend in the company’s second of three races as primary partner in 2024. Founded in 1986 in Osage Beach, Missouri by Andy Kuntz’s parents John and Carol Kuntz, Andy’s Frozen Custard has been providing the freshest frozen custard in the business for 38 years, giving ice cream the “cold shoulder” by scooping, mixing and presenting handcrafted frozen custard treats with speed and a smile. Since the beginning, the family members have had one dream: to share what makes them happiest with everyone else, and to warm hearts one scoop of frozen custard at a time. With a focus on product quality, customer service and community involvement, Andy’s has grown into the nation’s largest frozen custard-only business, with 150 stores across 15 states proudly serving the World’s Finest Frozen Custard. Andy’s has been committed to supporting developing drivers of all ages from their first race throughout their racing career for more than 30 years, an extension of the family’s lifelong commitment to motorsports. Andy’s is the “Official Frozen Treat” of Texas Motor Speedway.

    Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

    • Riley Herbst is ready for the electricity of downtown Chicago during Saturday’s The Loop 121 on the Chicago Street Course. The driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang Dark Horse will bank on his family roots of racing SCORE International Trophy Trucks in the deserts of Mexico and the Desert Southwest while learning to navigate the city streets of Chicago. While the two types of racing are significantly different, both are full of unknowns, but Herbst showed his propensity to overcome the unknown when he piloted the Herbst Motorsports Trophy Truck to a third-place finish in the November 2022 Baja 1000, and a win in last November’s renewal of the iconic event. He’s looking to channel that positive mojo this weekend on 2.2-mile, 12-turn Chicago Street Course as he looks to extend his streak of three consecutive top-10s. His latest run started with a runner-up finish June 15 at Iowa Speedway in Newton, an eighth-place finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, and a sixth-place result last Saturday at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway after battling his way into race-winning contention on the final restart. Herbst’s Nashville effort, waged in extreme heat and humidity, was all the more impressive as his coolsuit malfunctioned early in the race and necessitated an extended pit stop that sent him to the back of the field. He persevered through the extreme conditions in driving to his eighth top-10 of the season.
    • In last year’s inaugural Chicago Street Race, Herbst started 15th and worked his way into the top-10 before pitting to repair damage sustained when he was collected by a spinning car in the opening laps. He worked his way back toward the front until the No. 98 Monster Energy team opted to pit when the caution flag flew on lap 24, dropping him out of the top-20. Lightning then brought out the red flag on lap 25 and the race never resumed due to torrential rain and standing water. When it was declared official the next day, Herbst was credited with a 24th-place finish despite the speed he had shown during the weekend.
    • With just nine races to go before the Xfinity Series Playoffs kick off Sept. 28 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Herbst looks to be in a good position to make the 12-driver postseason field. While he has yet to score his first win of the season that would lock him into the playoff field, his consistency and stage points have put him 103 points above the top-12 cutline. In the regular-season standings, he is currently fifth, 118 points behind his first-place teammate Cole Custer and 40 points behind fourth-place Austin Hill. After missing the playoffs last season, Herbst not only went on to score his first victory during the Round of 8 at his home track of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, but he scored more points than any other driver during that round. He followed up his Las Vegas win with a runner-up finish at Homestead-Miami Speedway and fourth-place finish at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

Cole Custer, Driver of the No. 00 Andy’s Frozen Custard Ford Mustang Dark Horse

You’re returning to the place where you got your second win of the 2023 season in a rain-shortened inaugural event at the Chicago Street Course. You won the pole and led all 25 laps before the torrential downpour came. What’s your confidence level this weekend, knowing the field includes some road course ringers?

“I won’t lie – the competition is going to be stiff this weekend. The Xfinity Series field will have both of the inaugural Chicago Street Course winners racing with myself with SVG (Shane van Gisbergen). That’s just crazy, but it’s a challenge that myself and the No. 00 team are ready for. We have proven that we can compete with the best of them at road courses and hopefully that holds true this weekend. Of course, there’s always extra pressure heading into a race that you had previously won, but I’m excited. I enjoyed this track last year, and to be the inaugural winner meant a lot. We’ve been close to a win the past few weekends, but it’s all about putting it all together and having a great race. We’re close to that win, but we just need that little bit more.”

Andy’s Frozen Custard is back on your No. 00 Ford Mustang Dark Horse this weekend. Talk about that relationship and what it means to have their support this season with their long history in motorsports.

“It means a lot to have the support of Andy’s Frozen Custard on the No. 00 Ford Mustang Dark Horse this year. They’ve been in this sport as a supporter for so long, so to have them on my car just proves that they think I can go win another championship. I met Andy Kuntz (owner) on the streets on Nashville during the NASCAR Awards and immediately gave him my business card. A couple of months later, they were on my car at Texas. It’s a dream come true to have a custard company as a sponsor, and I’m thankful for their support. It was a perfect match and, hopefully I’ll be able to get them a good run at Chicago.”

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang Dark Horse

After three strong weekends on intermediates and short tracks, you’re heading back to the Chicago Street Course. What are your expectations for the weekend?

“Honestly, Chicago was one of those races we struggled at last year, so I think our goal this weekend is to just have the same speed we’ve shown all season. We’ve been a top-five car every weekend except two – COTA and Sonoma. Even at those tracks, though, we outperformed for a good portion of the race. We just lacked speed. Still, we were fast at Portland, so hopefully we can see that again at Chicago. It’s such a unique race given its location, and I want to do well there. I’m confident in my No. 98 Monster Energy team and ready for the challenge.”

You’ve found a stride in the summer months during the same timeframe you were having difficulties last season. Describe what you’ve gone through this season to be sitting where you are in the points.

“I think it’s super interesting, to be honest with you, because Iowa and New Hampshire actually gave us our first back-to-back top-10s of the year, which was a big surprise to me. That just kind of shows how fast we are to get stage points and help get us to fifth in points, so I feel like if we could finish where we’ve been running, we would probably be first or second in points, but we’ve had some awful finishes, some of our own doing and some not. It just shows how much speed we’ve had on the No. 98 Monster Energy team because last year we finished really bad, and we were really bad in points. This year, we’re finishing bad and we’re still pretty high in points, so that just means we have to execute and put everything together and I think we can close in on the gap. I believe in this team, though, and I’m having fun right now.”

  • Connor Mosack Ready for ‘Saturday in the Park’

Connor Mosack Ready for ‘Saturday in the Park’

25-Year-Old Racer To Make First NASCAR Xfinity Series Start of 2024 in The Loop 110 on Streets of Downtown Chicago
Chicago-Based Porter Pipe & Supply Backing Mosack and JR Motorsports in NASCAR’s Second Annual Chicago Street Race Weekend

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (July 1, 2024) – Ever since last year’s inaugural NASCAR race weekend on the streets of downtown Chicago, Connor Mosack has been itching to get back to the temporary 2.2-mile, 12-turn street circuit that surrounds Grant Park.

Despite being a rookie in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Mosack came into last year’s race as the rare driver with previous street-course experience. In the TA2 division of the Trans Am Series, Mosack made two street-course starts in the Music City Grand Prix in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The Charlotte, North Carolina, native started second and led nine laps before finishing third in the inaugural event in 2021. In his return to Nashville in 2022, Mosack qualified fourth and grabbed the lead on the opening lap. He proceeded to lead the 39-car field for 26 laps before finishing second.

That background, along with Mosack’s overall road-racing history in Trans Am, allowed him to find speed immediately in Chicago. In just his 12th Xfinity Series start, Mosack qualified a career-best fourth. He ran among the top-five for the first 20 laps until a carburetor issue derailed his strong run. When the caution came out for a nearby lightning strike on lap 25, Mosack ducked into the pits for his crew to lift the hood and diagnose the problem. He returned to the track in 35th, but shortly thereafter, the race was postponed for rain. But with a plan to replace the carburetor and seemingly plenty of laps still remaining, Mosack eyed the opportunity to work his way back toward the front when racing resumed. It never happened. Persistent rain forced NASCAR to call the race official after 25 laps, denying Mosack a chance to return to the front.

“Despite the outcome, I thought the Chicago Street Race was an awesome event,” Mosack said. “I’m definitely excited to get back and finish what I started there. The track was a lot of fun to drive with a lot of high-risk, high-reward corners. I think it’ll be just as big, if not bigger, of an event than last year.”

The race is definitely big for Mosack. Even with being a two-time winner in Trans Am and a two-time winner in the ARCA Menards Series, the 25-year-old is still trying to secure a fulltime ride in NASCAR.

While running the entire, 12-race Trans Am schedule, Mosack has only been able to run four ARCA races and four NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races in 2024. The Loop 110 marks his first Xfinity Series race of the season after making 24 starts in the stepping-stone division to the elite NASCAR Cup Series last year. Nonetheless, Mosack eyes the positives gained from jumping into different racecars in different series.

“I think being able to adapt to a different car and a different track is definitely important,” Mosack said. “Even when you run the same series consistently and see the same racetracks, grip levels are constantly changing. Being able to adapt every lap to the grip the car has at that moment is definitely important for making speed in the race.

“And there are certain things from each car and each series, the guys you race against, that you’re able to learn from. Even though they may not apply directly to a different series, there are a lot of things you can take away from it. There’s a lot of benefit there, and seat time is obviously important.

“Of course, there are some things that you miss not being fulltime in a particular series, just from guys constantly getting better each and every week in that car and learning what they need to build on, and having that chemistry with the crew chief and all the guys on your team. You kind of miss a little bit of that, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have speed each and every weekend you show up.”

Mosack is aided on this front by the team that he is with at Chicago – JR Motorsports, the powerhouse Xfinity Series team owned by NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Jr., that has collected 84 Xfinity Series victories and three championships.

“JR Motorsports does a really good job. They’re particular with the details, and this is a detail-oriented sport,” said Mosack, who first drove for JR Motorsports in 2020 when he wheeled a Late Model to the CARS Tour rookie-of-the-year title.

“My crew chief, Andrew Overstreet, is really sharp. I’ve been able to work with him in the simulator and at the shop, getting fitted in the car and ensuring we’re where we need to be before we even unload at Chicago. So, I’m definitely looking forward to it. It’s a great opportunity to have a great run.”

Mosack comes into Chicago with some fresh road-course experience. The Trans Am Series has raced the past two weekends at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington and Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, with Mosack finishing fifth and fourth, respectively, in 30-car fields. Mosack also ran the ARCA race June 21 at Mid-Ohio, winning the pole and leading 13 laps before a restart penalty on the green-white-checkered finish relegated him to 13th.

“All of that recent road-course experience is certainly helpful. Just reps at a road course in general help you in any kind of car you hop into. You kind of get used to what the weight (of the car) feels like on a road course,” Mosack said.

“While the Trans Am car and the Xfinity car do have quite a few differences, they’re also still fairly similar, or at least a lot more similar than a sportscar or an open-wheel car would be. It is fairly adaptable between the two, you just need to be mindful of the extra weight you’re carrying. The car rolls over a little bit more, and the brakes aren’t as strong as they are on the Trans Am car, but a lot of the same principles apply throughout the race.

“The braking is probably the biggest difference between an Xfinity car and an ARCA car, so I feel like it was good to kind of manage my brakes throughout the ARCA race at Mid-Ohio and see how they faded. I feel like that’s going to be the biggest thing to manage going into Chicago. In our eyes, we won that race at Mid-Ohio, and having that confidence helps going into Chicago.”

Confidence is what’s needed to attack Chicago’s 12-turn layout, where drivers speed past some of the city’s most renowned landmarks, from Michigan Avenue to South Lake Shore Drive, with the start-finish line near Buckingham Fountain.

“There are definitely some really challenging corners at Chicago,” Mosack said. “Turn one is a heavy braking zone where you quickly have to set up to get back to turn two, and when you do it right you can make up a little bit of time.

“That leads onto a long straightaway through (turns) three and four, where your exit off two is going to be really important. And then turn four is one of the really challenging corners on the track. It was really rough last year, so it’s a corner you never feel like you get into hard enough, but you also feel like if you go in a little harder, you’re probably going to crash. That’s a spot where maybe late in the race there’s time to be found there, but there’s definitely a risk to go get it.

“That leads to a little tight section into turn five, which is another important corner to get off of well because it leads onto the longest straightaway. And that leads to another heavy braking zone in (turn) six, back into a quick setup into turn seven, which is probably the tightest corner on the track. It’s really easy to get into trouble there with the downhill braking zone.

“And that leads to the fastest cornering section – (turns) eight, nine and 10 – which is probably the most fun part of the track, but it’s also very easy to make a mistake there. The closer you can get to the wall there, the faster you’ll go, but obviously that comes with a risk.

“And then the last two corners are pretty basic, 90-degree, right-hand corners. That section of the track has been repaved, so those corners will have a lot of grip.”

Typical road-course venues have significant run-off areas, whereas street circuits do not. Getting comfortable with those confines can set one’s lap times free.

“The biggest takeaway from those street-course races at Nashville was just getting comfortable running up close to the walls,” Mosack said. “Scott Lagasse, who I drove for in Trans Am, told me that if your car had sideview mirrors on it, you want to scrape it on the outside wall turning in, scrape the inside one at the apex, and then scrape the outside one on exit. It’s about getting comfortable with those last few inches against the wall.

“That’s where the track’s going to have the most grip late in the race, where there’s a little less rubber to slide on. It’s also going to give you the most radius at the corner and allow you to carry the most speed. But, obviously, the more risks you take, the more likely you are to catch the fence at some point. If you catch the outside here and there, it’s probably not going to hurt you too bad, but clipping the inside could definitely send you too hard into the outside wall.”

In addition to street cred, Mosack brings Chicago-based Porter Pipe & Supply to The Loop 110, where he will drive the No. 88 Porter Pipe & Supply Chevrolet Camaro. Porter Pipe & Supply is a third-generation, family-owned and operated wholesale supplier of commercial and industrial pipe, valves, fittings, plumbing supplies, HVAC and refrigeration equipment and mechanical products.

“We’re proud Chicagoans and the NASCAR race weekend brings a tremendous amount of pride,” said Nick Porter, CEO, Porter Pipe & Supply. “It’s an incredibly unique way for us to take care of our customers in our hometown. Seeing the Porter Pipe & Supply car in a NASCAR race will be another milestone moment for our family-owned company.”

Mosack brokered the partnership with Porter Pipe & Supply, putting his degree in business entrepreneurship from High Point (N.C.) University to good use.

“I had the pleasure of being at Porter Pipe & Supply last week for a few hours before I went to Road America,” Mosack said. “I got to meet with a lot of their employees and their customers. They definitely seem to be even more excited than they were last year, and I feel the same way. It was great to see a lot of the same people who were all excited about how things went last year until we had our issue, and I feel like we can do even better for them this year.

“The Porters are a great family. If you talk with any of their employees, they’re all happy to be working there. It’s just a really cool atmosphere that they have there, and it makes you want to perform and do well for them.”

All aspects of the Xfinity Series race take place on Saturday. Mosack and his Xfinity Series counterparts hit the track at 9 a.m. CDT/10 a.m. EDT for a 50-minute practice session before qualifying starts at 10 a.m. CDT/11 a.m. EDT. The Loop 110 gets underway at 2:30 p.m. CDT/3:30 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by NBC and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

  • Joey Logano to Pilot the No. 15 Ford Mustang for AM Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Chicago Street Race

Joey Logano to Pilot the No. 15 Ford Mustang for AM Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Chicago Street Race

STATESVILLE, N.C.: AM Racing confirmed today that Ford Performance driver Joey Logano will drive the No. 15 AM Racing Ford Mustang for the upcoming NASCAR Xfinity Series race at the Chicago Street Race on Saturday, July 6.

Logano, Sunday’s winner of the NASCAR Cup Series Ally 400 race at Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway will fill in for Hailie Deegan, who has piloted the team’s Ford Mustang in the first 17 Xfinity races of the season.

After a rough start to the first half of the Xfinity Series season, the team is looking to channel the two-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion and Sunday’s winner at Nashville Superspeedway to help provide feedback that the team can use to improve on-track competition as the sport heads into the second half of the season.

“The level of competition in the Xfinity Series is as competitive as it’s ever been,” commented AM Racing team president Wade Moore. “It is our goal at AM Racing to field a competitive race team through our technical alliance with Stewart-Haas Racing and provide any of our drivers the best equipment and opportunity to be successful on track each weekend.”

“With that being said, we haven’t had the success on track that we were hoping for in the first half of the season. When the opportunity to have Joey in the car at Chicago became a possibility, we felt we needed to take advantage of the knowledge and feedback that a two-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion could provide to our teams’ growth.”

Added Moore, “We intend to take the feedback and data from the Chicago race weekend and apply it to building better race cars each week so AM Racing can have a stronger second half of the season.”

Team partner Klutch Vodka will support Logano’s return to Xfinity Series competition in the second-annual Loop 110 at the Chicago Street Course.

“We support AM Racing and we’re happy to have Joey Logano behind the wheel of the No. 15 Klutch Vodka Ford Mustang at the Chicago Street Course,” offered Klutch Vodka CEO Anthony S. Quattrochi and his Co-Founder, fiancé Brandy Wong.

“His experience and talent will be a great asset to the AM Racing team this weekend and no doubt will present the opportunity to introduce the Klutch Vodka brand to new race fans as well.”

Logano, a native of Middletown, Connecticut, has delivered many achievements in the Xfinity Series, including 36 poles, 30 wins, 95 top-five and 143 top-10 finishes.

The Team Penske driver did not compete in the inaugural Xfinity Series race last year in Chicago; however, he finished eighth in the first-ever Cup Series Street Course event.

AM Racing at the Chicago Street Course, with driver Brett Moffitt, captured a Xfinity team-best of fourth after starting seventh in the 2023 The Loop 121.

“Racing in the rain on Chicago’s Street Course last year was a challenge within itself. Any extra seat time is always a positive for unique tracks such as this one. Driving the NASCAR Xfinity Series cars are a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to climbing behind the wheel of the No. 15 AM Racing Ford Mustang, with high hopes to wheel it to the front.”

The Loop 110 at the Chicago Street Race is scheduled for Saturday, July 6th, at 3:30 p.m. Fans can tune in to NBC to see all the action from the Windy City.

Kaulig Racing Race Recap | Tennessee Lottery 250

    AJ ALLMENDINGER
    No. 16 Celsius Chevrolet Camaro

    • AJ Allmendinger qualified fourth for the Tennessee Lottery 250 at Nashville Superspeedway.
    • Allmendinger took over third place on the opening lap. Allmendinger remained quiet on the radio as he took over second place on lap 31. The No. 16 went on to finish the opening stage in second place. After the yellow flag waved at the end of the stage, Allmendinger reported his Chevy was better than it was in practice. Allmendinger told crew chief, Alex Yontz, his No. 16 started off free on entry but was building too tight by the end of the run. The team pit for four tires and fuel and exited pit road in sixth place.
    • Allmendinger restarted in sixth place for the second stage. He continued to regain position and took over second place on lap 84. Allmendinger finished the second stage in second place and reported his No. 16 Celsius Chevy was the same balance wise as the end of the first stage. Under the stage break, Yontz called Allmendinger to pit road for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment.
    • Allmendinger restarted the final stage in third place on lap 97 and has taken over second by lap 113. When the caution came out on lap 136, Allmendinger was scored in forth place. The No. 16 came to pit road for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. The team had an issue on the right rear during the stop and lost several spots on pit road. Allmendinger restarted in ninth place and went on to finish in seventh place.

“I don’t think we were fast enough that last run to win the race. The lost track position for sure didn’t help but we just got too tight there. The most important thing is our Celsius Chevy was pretty quick today. All we are searching for it speed. Of course we want to win the race, but at the end of the day, we need to keep finding speed. If we run like we did today at other tracks, the wins will come.” – AJ Allmendinger

    SHANE van GISBERGEN
    No. 97 WeatherTech Chevrolet Camaro

    • Shane van Gisbergen qualified 28th for the Tennessee Lottery 250 at Nashville Superspeedway.
    • Shane van Gisbergen and his WeatherTech team started 28th for the 188-lap event on Saturday afternoon. During stage one, which ran its duration without cautions, Van Gisbergen maintained his position, taking the green and checkered flags in 27th place. He battled a tight-handling car throughout stage one and pitted during the stage break caution for four new tires, Sunoco fuel, and adjustments.
    • The WeatherTech team started stage two in 23rd place after gaining four positions on pit road and quickly moved into the top 20. Van Gisbergen continued to contend with a tight race car throughout the stage but finished 18th at the green and white checkered flag.
    • Van Gisbergen made a pit stop under the stage break caution for new tires, fuel, and adjustments. He started stage three in 21st position. The No. 97 battled in the top 20 through the first 40 laps of the stage, reaching 17th place before the first caution of the race occurred with 51 laps remaining. The WeatherTech team restarted stage three in 15th place with 47 laps left in the event. Van Gisbergen maintained his position and finished 15th at the checkered flag.

“The heat was crazy, but a good day for our WeatherTech Chevy. Struggled a bit with tightness but my team worked hard to adjust it and the car drove better near the end (of the race). Getting better on these ovals, learning and having fun. Looking forward to next weekend.” – Shane van Gisbergen

    JOSH WILLIAMS
No. 11 Alloy Employer Services Chevrolet Camaro

    • Josh Williams qualified 26th for the Tennessee Lottery 250.
    • Williams picked up four spots in the opening five laps before his forward momentum halted for the rest of the stint. He said the No. 11 Chevy Camaro had no grip, and he subsequently fell back to 25th, where he’d finish the opening stage in.
    • He came down pit road during the stage break for tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment and restarted 24th on lap 51. He immediately began battling to move into 20th, taking it from teammate Shane van Gisbergen on lap 66. He eventually moved into 19th, finishing stage two there.
    • Williams pitted for tires, fuel and another track bar adjustment during the stage caution and gained seven spots to restart from 12th on lap 98. During the long green flag run, the No. 11 Alloy Employer Services Chevy began slipping backwards. Williams fell to 24th by lap 136, when the race’s first natural caution came out. He pitted for tires, fuel, and a track bar and air pressure adjustment. Restarting on lap 143 from 30th after a speeding penalty, Williams could only muster a six-spot gain and finished the 188-lap race in 24th.

“That was a pretty frustrating day. I felt like we had some more to give, but unfortunately the adjustments we made went the wrong way and we couldn’t recover.” – Josh Williams

  • Nemechek Wins NASCAR Xfinity Series Tennessee Lottery 250 Thriller

Nemechek Wins NASCAR Xfinity Series Tennessee Lottery 250 Thriller

John Hunter Nemechek held on to win a thrilling Tennessee Lottery 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Nashville Superspeedway

LEBANON, Tenn. — John Hunter Nemechek held on to win a thrilling Tennessee Lottery 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race Saturday at Nashville Superspeedway as a host of challengers were charging toward him as the race finished.

Nemechek, 27, earned his second win on the season in dramatic fashion by holding off teammate Chandler Smith and Richard Childress Racing teammates Jesse Love and Austin Hill during the final 48-lap, green-flag run.

It was Nemechek’s first win at Nashville and his 11th career Xfinity Series victory in his No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.

“I thought we gave the race away there at the start of Stage 3; I asked for an adjustment and probably shouldn’t have,” said Nemechek, who won Stage 2. “Can’t say enough about my team and glad to finally get it done here at Nashville.”

Part of today’s challenge for the drivers was battling warm summer temperatures and for those who chose not to wear the high-tech cool-body suits, even higher temperatures in the cars. Nemechek said he’s old-school when it comes to racing in the heat.

“I love it when it’s hot out,” Nemechek said. “It separates the men from the boys.”

Nemechek also has an affinity for Nashville, the city where he grew up and learned and perfected his race craft.

“Getting my start at the Fairgrounds, and winning there and now getting a win here at the big track is very special to me,” Nemechek said. “Being able to come to this market for a NASCAR race and putting on a great show for the fans here is really cool.”

Nemechek, who received a beautiful green Gibson guitar for the hard-fought victory, will try to double-up tomorrow during the Ally 400 NASCAR Cup Series race (2:30 p.m. CT, NBC and PRN Radio), where he could add a shiny purple Gibson guitar to his collection. Nemechek will start 35th in row 18 alongside rookie Zane Smith.

Smith rallied to finish second in his No. 81 Toyota, but it was Love who had the fans on their feet as he put on a heck of a show marching all the way through the field.

Love, who finished third after starting last in his red and white No. 2 Chevy, passed a grand total of 69 cars and battled back from several different challenges during the race. He passed an incredible 35 cars during his inspired run to the front.

“I am just proud of everyone at RCR and proud to be a part of a team that doesn’t give up,” an exhausted Love said after the race.

Second-place Smith, who finished just over a second behind Nemecheck said he needed a few more laps to get the job done.

“We got caught up in (Allgaier) and (Gibbs’) scuffle there I’m super proud of everyone at the JGR,” Smith said. “I hate that we got in that mess there cause we could’ve probably made a better run at the win.”

RCR’s Hill, who finished fourth, said he and his teammates couldn’t get the car right where they needed it.

“We fought, it was probably a fourth-place car,” Hill said. “Throughout the race we lost the handle on the car. Everyone at RCR is working really hard. We just have to get a little bit better., I think we will be OK. It’s frustrating to run third and fourth, but it’s still a top-five day. We have to keep our heads up.”

Pole-winner Ty Gibbs finished 20th after winning stage one and finishing fourth in Stage 2. He and Allgaier tangled on Lap 137, ending both drivers’ chances at victory. Allgaier finished eighth.

The other Cup regulars in the race were Noah Gragson, who finished fifth, Tyler Reddick, who finished 14th, and Ross Chastain, who finished 27th.
