Tyler Reddick Secures Ninth-Consecutive Top-Five with Second Place Finish at Pocono Raceway

    Finish: 2nd
    Start: 6th
    Points: 1st

“Another week, another fast No. 2 TAME the BEAST Chevrolet Camaro from the RCR team. We started off the race with a bit of a challenge since we had to start at the rear due to a transmission change that happened after final practice yesterday. I knew if we were smart and didn’t get caught up in anyone’s mess back there that we’d be back up front in no time. Luckily we were able to get back up there in plenty of time and were able to keep our streak of earning stage points in every stage this season alive. The balance of my TAME the BEAST Camaro was decent in Turn 2, just building tight throughout the run. Randall (Burnett, crew chief) and the team did a great job trying to loosen it up for me, but it just kept snapping back tight. We had to overcome a bit of a hole late in the race after a pit road violation for an outside tire violation, but we had such a fast car that we were able to be back in contention for the final two restart attempts. I had Cole on the start of that final lap but just got way too tight in that final turn. I hate finishing races like that, but we’ll rebound next week at Michigan. If we keep bringing Chevrolet Camaros like this one, we’ll be in good shape.” -Tyler Reddick

    RACE WINNING TEAM PRESS CONFERENCE

DID YOU SAY YOU DIDN’T WANT TO DOWNSHIFT INTO TURN THREE AND DIDN’T WANT TO WIN THAT WAY? WHY NOT?

COLE CUSTER: “I guess that was heard wrong. I just wished it wasn’t that close. I just wish it was no cautions. We had such a big lead. I just went in there and tried to get on Tyler’s bumper. I didn’t hit him at all. He just overdrove the corner and missed the bottom a little bit. I already had my downshift planned so I was able to have a little extra torque coming off the corner and was able to clear him. I just wish it wasn’t that close.”

TYLER SAID THAT YOU DIDN’T KNOW WHERE HE WAS ON THAT LAST RESTART AND THAT MOVE HE MADE. DID THAT CATCH YOU OFF-GUARD? “I just had no idea how he didn’t miss the bottom because I drove it in there the same as I did the other restarts and I barely felt like I made it and he drove in there like three car lengths deeper and somehow still made the corner. I thought he was going to blow the bottom and I was going to drive right under him. I don’t know. I was really shocked by that. I guess I will know that for the future.”

“He was driving really hard there at the end and actually hit the wall in turn one. I knew he was giving it his all and I was going to have a shot, I just needed to hit my marks and try to get on his bumper to try to pack some air on him. I was able to just kind of make it happen there on the last corner.”

DO YOU NEED TO WIN RACES LIKE THAT TO BE A CUP DRIVER? “I think so. If you are going to be a Cup driver, all those guys in that series know in every single situation they are put in what they are going to do. You have to adapt to it and you have to know what your strengths and weaknesses are and what you are going to try to do. The one thing I wish I didn’t do today was I wish I didn’t get beat into turn one.”

WITH YOU WINNING THE RACE AND CHASE FINISHING THIRD, WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THE STRENGTH OF THE TEAM RIGHT NOW? “We have had fast cars all year. The 98 is getting better and better. HOpefully we just keep going in the same direction. I don’t know what to say. We have pretty fast cars every single weekend. It is pretty much between us, the 2 and 20 every weekend. As long as we keep hitting our marks I think we will be right there.”

DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU ARE THE CHAMPIONSHIP FAVORITES RIGHT NOW? “I think it is a toss up between us, the 2 and 20. I think any of us could win it right now. We are all pretty even. We are going to get better and better as the year goes on. As we go back to tracks a second time with me and Mike working together again it is going to help and the second half of the year we will get better and better.”

MIKE SHIPLETT, crew chief, No. 00 Ford Mustang: “It all still boils down to one race at Homestead and he is very good there.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT MICHIGAN NEXT WEEKEND AND WILL YOU TAKE THE SAME CAR BACK THERE? “I would love to take the same car back there but unfortunately we will have to spend a couple weeks getting it fixed back up and pass NASCAR tech. They get beat up pretty bad racing here. It will be about a five week rotation. This car will probably come back at Kentucky. We have another one just as good at the shop for Michigan.”

COLE CUSTER CONTINUED – “Michigan has never been my favorite track but we have been fast everywhere and I think it is a matter of me doing my homework and figuring out what I need to do there. I don’t run bad there, it is just not my favorite place.”

WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR MIND WHEN THE CAUTION CAME OUT TO WIPE OUT YOUR BIG LEAD? “As you do it enough, you know with 15 to go and you have like a 10-second lead that something is going to go wrong. I was planning on there being a caution. You always plan on it. That way when it happens you don’t freak out. It is definitely disappointing. You just have to know what you have to do in that situation with the restart on older tires and try to get the best push from the guys behind you and you go from there.”

YOU HAVE AN ARCA WIN HERE, NOW AN XFINITY WIN HERE. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THIS PLACE THAT YOU SEEM TO LIKE? “I don’t know. I have always had pretty fast cars here. I think this time was the first time that I really understood the track and I feel like I have learned a lot and have a really good grasp on it. It is a tough place to figure out just because it means so much to get off the corners. Also we don’t have the motor to really pull us off the corner. You have to get your center speed up. It is a tough place to figure out with such fast straightaways and flat corners. I think I finally have a good understanding of it.”

YOU HAD A CUP START HERE PREVIOUSLY AS WELL, DID THAT PLAY INTO ANYTHING YOU LEARNED COMING IN THIS WEEKEND? “I think so a little bit. I think I learned some things there. I don’t know if it is what made the difference or not but it definitely helped me a little bit in some litte areas.”

    FORD FINISHING RESULTS
    1st – Cole Custer
    3rd – Chase Briscoe
    7th – Austin Cindric

COLE CUSTER, No. 00 FIMS Manufacturing Ford Mustang: FINISHED 1st

WHAT ABOUT THAT LAST LAP PASS? “It was pretty unbelievable. Tyler gave me a real run for my money there. I have no idea how he made it stick on that restart on the bottom passing me but he did. He was unbelievable on the brakes at the end. I was just able to kind of force a mistake a little bit trying to pack air on him. It was a fun end of the race. I wish I didn’t have to do it like that, but it probably made it exciting. I can’t thank everyone enough at FIMS. They are great people. Thanks for coming on board for this race. Hopefully we get more wins for them in the future.”

CLEAN AIR WAS KING WASN’T IT? “It was definitely important. It was pretty huge. It is not easy to pass. The biggest problem was that we kind of lost some of our brakes and had to be pretty conservative with that so it was harder to get to the front. We just had a great Mustang that could overcome that.”

HOW ABOUT THIS TEAM AND THIS WIN? MOMENTUM IS ON YOUR SIDE: “Yeah, we are hitting our stride. We have really fast cars and it is just a matter of doing it week in and week out and we have been doing it. We just need to keep going out there and execute.”

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 98 Nutri Chomps / Orscheln Ford Mustang: FINISHED 3rd

“That last restart I thought I timed it really well and I thought I was maybe going to be able to clear Cole but just didn’t quite have the push from behind. We were too tight to get up there and mix it up with him and Reddick. Overall a really strong day for our Nutri Chomps Ford guys and a good day for Stewart-Haas with Cole winning and us running third. A lot to build on. Still need to get a lot better. We will go to Michigan and see what we can do.”

    • Annett has had much success on tracks measuring 2.5 miles or more this season, winning at Daytona International Speedway in February and earning the pole at Talladega Superspeedway.
    • Annett’s sixth-place finish last week at Charlotte Motor Speedway was his seventh top-10 of the season in 11 races.
    • Annett and his No. 1 Pilot Flying J Chevrolet team are already qualified for the NXS Playoffs by virtue of the victory at Daytona to open the season.

    Justin Allgaier

    • Justin Allgaier has one top-five finish at Pocono in three starts. He claimed the runner-up spot at the track in 2017.
    • The Illinois native has a best start of fourth at the Tricky Triangle and has led 13 laps there.
    • Allgaier is coming off two consecutive second-place finishes after earning the runner-up spot at both Dover and Charlotte.

    Driver Quotes

“Bigger tracks are good for me, and I’ve always liked Pocono. We won at Daytona and earned the pole at Talladega, so this is the next opportunity we have to continue that success this season on these larger tracks. The communication among the team is really good right now and we are hitting the goals we established, to qualify well, earn stage points and get top-five and top-10 finishes. I’m looking forward to keeping that consistency going into the summer and on toward the Playoffs.”– Michael Annett

“I love racing at Pocono. I was fortunate enough to win there in the ARCA Series. Jason Burdett and our No. 7 Klondike team have done a really good job there in the past. I really like racing at tracks that are unique and aren’t necessarily your standard shape. You really have to think through all three corners. To be good in Turn 1, you’re going to struggle a little in Turn 2 and Turn 3 and vice versa. Figuring which corner you’re willing to give up a little bit of speed in order to gain the speed on the other corners is so important. I’m excited for this race. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.”– Justin Allgaier

“I’m really looking forward to hopping back in the No. 8 Planters Chevrolet this weekend at Pocono Raceway. Pocono is a track that I don’t have a lot of experience at, and I’m definitely ready to get on track and learn more about the details of each turn. Pocono is a place where it’s hard to know what to expect ahead of time. All three of the turns are so different, and I’m very fortunate to have the opportunity to race for JR Motorsports and contribute to the success of the No. 8 team so far this season.”– Ryan Preece

“I really like racing at Pocono. It’s a fun and challenging track that really keeps you on your toes with the three different corners. We were really fast in practice here last year in the truck and I’m very confident we can unload that same way again this year in the Xfinity car. Hopefully we can keep the positive momentum going after last week in Charlotte and get our Switch Chevrolet in the front on Saturday. I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can do.” – Noah Gragson

    JRM Team Updates

    • JRM Driver Appearance at Pocono Fan Fair Stage: JRM teammates Michael Annett, Justin Allgaier and Noah Gragson will be appearing at Pocono Raceway’s Fan Stage on Friday, May 31 at 11 a.m. ET. The Fan Stage is located in the Fan Fair between Gates 9 and 10.

    – Nemechek is currently second in Sunoco Rookie of the Year points, 11 points behind Chase Briscoe in first place.

    Quotes:

“Pocono is a really fun track because it’s like no other track on the NASCAR circuit. It’s a challenge for not only the drivers but for the crew chiefs and teams as well. All three turns are different, so it makes the setup difficult to nail in all three corners. We showed some speed last weekend at Charlotte and I know that this 23 team have been working really hard to prepare this car. Hopefully we can get back up to the front and compete for a win in our ISM Connect Chevy.”

Supra driver Jeffrey Earnhardt captured a career-best third-place finish at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Teammate Brandon Jones (10th) also finished in the top 10 – his sixth top-10 finish this season.

After starting from the pole and leading 33 laps, Christopher Bell’s day ended early with a flat right-front tire on lap 90 and the Supra driver finished 31st.

    TOYOTA QUOTES

BRANDON JONES, No. 19 Menards / Jeld-Wen Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 10th

How was your day after salvaging a top-10 finish following a few brush-ups with the wall?

“This was not ideal temperatures to be fighting the car like that. I think a top 10 was great. I tried again that last little bit to use the outside (lane). I know a lot of guys were doing that and I was just too tight there with the damage that I had to do it. I hit the wall again. All in all, I think 10th was pretty good considering what we had today. We had Menards back on the car, so I know you could see that Supra all day long on the race track and we’re in Jeld-Wen’s backyard as well. All in all, we can build off that. I had a lot of confidence. I think on those restarts a couple of times I was able to jump out a lot and gain some ground, so I think that was big.”

CHRISTOPHER BELL, No. 20 Rheem Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 31st

Was there any warning that the tire would go down?

“No, none at all. I got pretty tight there the first stage. The second stage I was fighting a little bit loose. I had no warning.”

    What happened from your perspective?

“I don’t know. I felt like my balance was really good. My car was running good there. I had no warning of blowing a right front. I was actually a little bit loose that entire run. I guess we ran something over. I pile drove the fence and then rolling down the back straightaway I saw my teammate do it there too. Bummer, but we had a really fast Rheem Supra today.”

    Finish: 1st
    Start: 3rd
    Points: 1st

“Man, that Tame the Beast Chevy was one of the best race cars I’ve ever sat in. Randall Burnett and my team really used the two off-weekends to their advantage and spent a lot of time working to find what we needed to have just that edge we wanted to have when we roll of the hauler at these tracks. This Chevrolet was just awesome right from the start of the weekend. I almost hated having the Friday off in between practice day and the race. I wanted to get out there and race right away. Charlotte Motor Speedway has been a challenge for me in the past, so I knew I needed to be on my game to get us to Victory Lane. Luckily, I was able to do just that. The handling fired off a little loose today but by the time the final stage came around it was right where I wanted it. The boys on pit road got it done today, which helped a lot too. This was a huge team effort, and I can’t thank everyone for their support. This has been an awesome start to the year.”-Tyler Reddick

    Ford Finishing Results:
    9th – Austin Cindric
    19th – Chase Briscoe
    24th – Cole Custer

COLE CUSTER, No. 00 Thompson Pipe Group Ford Mustang – WHAT HAPPENED ON THAT LAST RESTART WHEN YOU HAD THE LEAD? “I got such a good restart before that. I mean, I picked the bottom again because I got such a good launch and I didn’t have it that time. It’s really frustrating. It seemed whoever was leading just couldn’t really get a good launch for whatever reason. I’m pretty frustrated with myself. I think we had a really good Thompson Pipe Group Mustang I just probably made too many mistakes there at the end.”

YOU DROPPED TO SIXTH AFTER SPINNING THE TIRES ON THAT LAST RESTART, BUT GOT BACK UP TO FOURTH BEFORE HITTING THE WALL. WHAT HAPPENED THERE? “I was just getting the air taken off my nose and I was just trying to run the top as best I could right behind somebody and I eventually got the wall. I shouldn’t make those mistakes, but it’s something I’ll learn from.”

YOUR TEAM OVERCAME A LOT OF ADVERSITY TODAY WITH THE HOLE IN THE NOSE. “Yeah, we did a great job fixing the car and then coming back through the field, but it’s just frustrating that that happened. When you put yourself behind like that you kind of lose what you want in the handling of your car.”

AUSTIN CINDRIC, No. 22 PPG Ford Mustang – “It wasn’t the cleanest day by any means. I’m proud to come home with a top 10. That’s probably about the only positive. I thought I learned the right lessons from last year and I guess I didn’t prepare enough for conditions being different or whatever. But I’m proud to come home P9 with the PPG Ford Mustang with one less set of tires than everybody. We’ve got a hard-working team and I’m very thankful for that. This is the first time we’ve had a day like this, so that’s kind of a positive, but, overall, looking forward to getting to Pocono and having a clean run.”

IS THAT AS HOT AS YOU’VE BEEN IN A RACE CAR? “No, I’ve been hotter. I’m not bad.”

HOW DID YOU MANAGE IT? “Hydrating a lot, working out a lot. I don’t have much fat to burn, so I’ve got to get myself some water to burn. All in all, you can’t be mad at the result, but it’s frustrating when the mile-and-a-halves seem to be our weak point, but at least we can recognize it this early in the season and go to work.”

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 98 Nutri Chomps/Pet Supermarket Ford Mustang – YOU PLAYED A DIFFERENT STRATEGY, BUT THE CAUTION DIDN’T FALL EXACTLY RIGHT FOR YOU. “We were probably for sure a second or third-place car, but honestly I felt like if I could have got clean air I was just as good as the 2. Then we came down, I thought we were still gonna be alright, and we were just working our way back through the field. I was on the outside of somebody and they just drove us into the fence and cut the right-front down and ended our day. I’m really proud of all of our Nutri Chomps Ford guys. We probably brought the best race car we’ve had all year long and feel like we’re finally getting the feel of what I like in a race car and I feel like we’re really gonna be able to contend for races week in and week out now.”

THE DECISION TO STAY OUT WAS A CASE OF JUST DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT THAN THE 2 AND 00? “No, I don’t really know what the plan was. I know Boswell didn’t think anybody would really come at all and when they all came I never heard if I was coming or not, so I just stayed out. Looking back on it, you never know, but I felt like if we didn’t get put in the wall we still could have won the race. The 7 obviously ran second and he was on the same strategy as us and we were definitely way better than him, so it’s just unfortunate. We’ll go on to Pocono and see what we can do.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL AFTER THIS RACE? “I honestly didn’t feel like it was that hot until after I got in the wall and our race was kind of over there. That’s when it kind of hit me, but I wasn’t too bad. I love when it’s hot and slick. I don’t love sitting in there the whole time, but as far as what the race track does it’s more up my alley. It’s gonna be a hot summer and I’m sure we’re gonna have a lot more of these.”
