Supra driver Riley Herbst was the highest-finishing Toyota driver in Friday night’s NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) event at Richmond Raceway as he finished ninth in his 2019 NXS debut.

After leading 32 laps (of 250), Supra driver Christopher Bell was involved in an on-track incident in stage two that put him off the pit cycle. As a result, Bell finished 16th and remains second in the NXS driver point standings.

Fellow Toyota teammate and Joe Gibbs Racing driver Brandon Jones lost an engine on lap 175 and finished 33rd.

    TOYOTA QUOTES

RILEY HERBST, No. 18 Monster Energy Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 9th

How was your first NASCAR Xfinity Series start of 2019?

“We started on the pole and led a few laps in the beginning. The whole first stage we just rode in third and fourth. We were cruising. We had a really good Toyota Supra. I made a lot of mistakes tonight. At the end of the stage, I spun my tires and that brought me back down to the mid-teens and 20s. Then I missed my pit box on pit road and had to start at the tail end and we just battled our way back through the field to somehow come away with a top 10. I definitely learned a lot every single lap tonight and Richmond is definitely a difficult race track, but it’s fun.”

BRANDON JONES, No. 19 Ruud Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 33rd

What happened to take you out of today’s race.

“We were having an okay day. I think we definitely could run inside the top 10. I came off turn four and truthfully thought I had kind of had a bad corner at first because I just didn’t really get past seven thousand RPMs and then it was like it almost took off again. I came back and I was like, I think we’re okay, but then all of a sudden I felt it go back down again. I’m sure we lost a valve or something. All in all these last two weeks have been a little tough on us, but we’re going to keep going. Talladega is normally pretty good to us if you can miss the big one and then we’ve got some more tracks too that are pretty good coming up. We’re going to keep plugging away and keep doing what we’ve been doing all year long which has been running in the top 10, top five and we’ll see what happens next week.”

    Quotes:
“We’re going to another short track this weekend in Richmond! We just came out of Bristol with another Top-10 finish. I’ve got Elliott Sadler as my teammate in the No. 10 for Kaulig Racing, so I’m going to use his veteran experience. I haven’t been to Richmond in quite a few years, since my NASCAR K&N Series days, so this will be my first time in a Xfinity car there this weekend. I plan on leaning on Elliott quite a bit and we will try to get another Top-10 finish – maybe even a win!”

    Driver Quotes

“We had a solid Pilot Flying J Chevrolet last week at Bristol, but we needed a little bit more to run in the top five. With how hard that Travis (Mack, crew chief) and the guys have been working, we’ll have it this weekend at Richmond. We’ve been on a roll so far this season, and we’ve had a pair of top-10 finishes the last two weeks, so we’ll continue on that plan and continue working on getting our Chevrolet ready for the Playoffs.” – Michael Annett

“Jason Burdett (crew chief) and the guys on this BRANDT Professional Agriculture team have worked hard to put together a strong short track program. I think we were proving that last weekend at Bristol until misfortune struck our team. We’ve had a lot of that so far this year and I’m ready to turn things around. Hopefully we get things done this weekend in Richmond and end the night in Victory Lane.” – Justin Allgaier

“We made a lot of progress last weekend in Bristol in what was my first start on a short track in the Xfinity Series. Taylor (Moyer, crew chief) and I learned a lot and I feel like we can continue to grow off of that this Friday in Richmond. It’s a one-day show which will be interesting but I’m ready for the challenge with our PatientPop Chevrolet. Hopefully we can have a smooth night and come home with a solid finish.” – Zane Smith

“I’m excited to be racing at Richmond again this weekend. We came so close here last season in my first ever Xfinity Series start and I’m really looking forward to seeing what we can do this time around with JR Motorsports and our Switch Chevrolet. We’ve had a lot of positive momentum here lately and I’m confident that we can keep building off that and be in contention all night long on Friday.” – Noah Gragson

    2019 Season Stats

    7 starts, 2 top-five and 5 top-10’s

    Notes:

    –     Nemechek and the No. 23 team will utilize chassis no. 216. This chassis was raced this year by John Hunter Nemechek at ISM Raceway (start: 13th/finish: 9th).

    –      FALCI Adaptive Motorsports (FAM) and its founder Dr. Scott Falci – a renowned Denver-based neurosurgeon and longtime NASCAR crew chief and auto racing executive Joe Garone will showcase cutting-edge technology to maximize the impact of bringing mobility to spinal cord injured and amputee individuals. Dr. Falci’s team constructed and installed the technological components that allow mobility-challenged individuals to drive the car hands-and-foot free by a slight movement of the head and mouth which enables input to the car’s steering, accelerator and braking systems.

    –      U.S. Paralympians from the National Wheelchair Basketball Association, including Will Waller, Trevon Jenifer and Steve Serio will take laps around Richmond Raceway on Wednesday, April 10beginning at 9 a.m.

    Quotes:

“I am really looking forward to going back to Richmond this weekend for my second Xfinity start at the short-track. Last year I had a strong car and led 36 laps before we lost the break pedal. Richmond, I feel like, falls into one of my stronger tracks on the NASCAR circuit and hopefully coming off the top-five finish at Bristol we can follow that up with another strong run. Having FALCI (Adaptive Motorsports) on the car this weekend is great. What Dr. Scott Falci and Joe Garone are doing for the mobility-challenged community is really special and to be able to raise awareness in the NASCAR community for their operation is a great honor.”

Toyota Racing NXS Bristol Victory Lane – Christopher Bell

CHRISTOPHER BELL, No. 20 Rheem Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 1st

Could you have scripted the win any better?

“I don’t know man. That’s pretty cool. To get my first win here with the Dash 4 Cash bonus. Thank you to Xfinity for doing that and more importantly thank you to Rheem, Ruud, everyone at Toyota, TRD (Toyota Racing Development), everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing. These Supras are super, super fast. Joe Gibbs Racing has a really, really good package here at Bristol, but for whatever reason we struggled to find it. I didn’t feel good basically all of practice and didn’t qualify good and as soon as they dropped the green flag for the race I was really, really loose. The longer the runs went, the better I got. I’m just very thankful to be here at Joe Gibbs Racing driving for such a wonderful team.”

Your pit crew really delivered this race.

“They’ve been taking care of us. We’ve had fast race cars every single week. My guys on pit road have been outstanding. It seems like week in and week out, every stop they’re able to pick us up a couple of spots. That’s huge. That’s really huge.”

How does it feel to hold a check for $100,000?

“It feels really good. Cardboard checks are my favorite trophies. I’ve got a couple of them from the dirt races, but none of them say a hundred grand so that’s pretty cool.”

Talk about that battle you had going on in the last stage.

“It was tough. I knew that if it would stay green I’d have a better shot because this thing was really good on the long run. The yellow came out with 35 (laps) to go and I was like man, if I can get the lead off pit road I think I can hold them off and then Brandon (Jones), my teammate, got out there on old tires and was doing a really good job. Ultimately I was okay with that because I was still in the spot for the one hundred grand and then he started fading and my car started coming to me and I felt really good.”

Was the most nerve-wracking part of the day the restarts for you?

“This thing was just really, really loose on taking off. Obviously it was really, really good in the long run and that’s what we needed. We needed a 35-lap run car and the longer that thing was going to go the better off we were.”

Tyler Reddick Earns Second-Consecutive Top-Five Finish with No. 2 Dolly Parton Chevrolet Camaro at Bristol Motor Speedway

    Finish: 2nd
    Start: 2nd
    Points: 1st

“Man, just one spot short again. Our No. 2 Dolly Parton Chevrolet Camaro was great today at Bristol Motor Speedway. The guys at Richard Childress Racing keep bringing me some fast Chevrolet Camaros. We had a miscommunication that caused us to finish second at the end of Stage One, and from there on second just seemed to be our number. We finished second in Stage Two and then second in the race. We’re on the edge of winning this year. We just need to clean a couple more things up. The good news is we qualified for Xfinity Racing’s Dash 4 Cash again, so we’ll have another shot at the money. I wish we could have finished just one spot better, especially for Dolly Parton in her home state. Hopefully, we’ll be one spot better next week. Our fifth top-five finish of the year is great, but we want that win.” -Tyler Reddick

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 98 Nutri Chomps Ford Mustang – HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR DAY? “That’s really what we should be doing all year long. It’s just taken us a little bit of time for me to learn the race cars and for them to kind of find what I like. Overall, this is by far our best weekend from start to finish. We showed that I feel like we can be a top four contender, so there at the end I felt like I honestly was the best car it’s just so hard to pass when they get like that around the top. I found a little bit of speed down on the bottom of one and two, but we didn’t get the $100,000 this week, but we’ve got a shot again next week. We’ll go there with our Nutri Chomps Ford and see what we can do.”

THIS IS WHAT YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT LAST WEEK WHERE THE BEGINNING YOU WERE OFF AND GOT BETTER AT THE END. YOU SEEMED TO BE CONSISTENT ALL DAY TODAY. “Yeah, we still weren’t great necessarily at the beginning to the middle stages, but it’s definitely the closest we’ve been. That’s definitely encouraging. There at the end, once again, I felt like we were probably the best car and for sure one of the top three best cars, but we’ve got to keep getting better and we have every week. It’s definitely something encouraging to look forward to for the rest of the season. I’m looking forward to going to Richmond and seeing what we can do.”

COLE CUSTER, No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang – “We just got that damage early and then had to come from the back. We just didn’t really have the fire off speed or the perfect scenarios to pass people when we got up in the top five to really get track position. It was impossible to pass, really. I don’t know. I’m pretty mad because I think we had the best car there at the end, we just didn’t have the best fire off. I know we’ve got to get a little bit better.”

YOU BATTLED THE 2 AT THE END. BUMPED HIM A FEW TIMES, BUT COULDN’T PASS. WHAT WAS YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS THERE? “Yeah, you just need the perfect scenario to pass somebody. You have to have the perfect run to get next to him and then you have to have no lappers on the inside. There are tons of lappers, so it’s almost impossible to get that perfect scenario to pass someone. We just couldn’t get it to happen. I think we had the best car there at the end, it’s just a matter of having the track position.”

AUSTIN CINDRIC, No. 22 MoneyLion Ford Mustang – “Bristol hasn’t been the strongest track for us over the last couple of years, but I think we’ve made a lot of improvements in our package and I think that showed in qualifying and in the race today. I feel like we’re just a bit compromised short run versus long run and lane usage. I could either be really good on the bottom or really good on the top, but I couldn’t be good enough at both with speed over the run, so we’ve got some things to learn and something to bring back here in the summer I had a lot of fun. I learned a lot. I think I was two laps down in stage two here in the fall race and was running second in stage two today, so I’ll take it.”

HOW WAS THE TRACK SURFACE? “It was interesting. There were glimmers of hope. I probably ran it more than anyone did in the first stage and made really good time on it because I felt like we were set up for it and no one on the track was gonna move up to the top. We set our car up for the top and we were just as competitive on the top. It was interesting for sure. It was racier than I expected it to be, but I’m interested to see what happens in the Cup race tomorrow for sure.”

  • Toyota NXS Bristol – Christopher Bell Quotes

Toyota NXS Bristol – Christopher Bell Quotes

    Toyota Racing – Christopher Bell
    NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS)
    Bristol Motor Speedway – April 5, 2019

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Christopher Bell was made available to the media in Bristol:

CHRISTOPHER BELL, No. 20 Rheem Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

Do you always look forward to coming to Bristol?

“Bristol is one of my favorites. After the fall race last year I was like man, I wish we could go to Bristol next week. Here we are. I love this race track. It’s one of my favorites.”

Why is Bristol one of your favorite tracks?

“It rewards hard driving. I would say that’s the biggest thing. Second of all, lap traffic is a lot of fun here because this is one of the few places in NASCAR that we go where lap traffic can’t just move over. All of the 1.5-mile and most of the other short tracks, they just can kind of pull out of the way. Here you can’t get out of the way. You have to race through the lap traffic and it makes it really fun.”

What is indicative of the racing from a NASCAR Xfinity Series standpoint at Bristol?

“We definitely have the opposite of the Cup package this year. Cup cars have a lot of downforce and we have very little downforce. They are going to be stuck a lot more with higher loads and fast corner speed where we’re going to be a little bit slower corner speed, but a lot more slipping and sliding.”

Harrison Burton is making his Xfinity Series debut at Bristol this weekend. Any advice for him and how closely are you going to be working with him?

“I don’t really know Harrison too well. Obviously he’s in a really good position driving for Joe Gibbs Racing and Kyle Busch Motorsports. He’s definitely got the equipment to go out there and do it. He’s been running pretty good in the truck deal, so it’ll be fun to see his progress.”

Are you happy with the 2019 season so far?

“I’m very happy with our speed. Not so happy with the results and it seems like that’s kind of the same story, different year type of deal. Last year, we were really fast and I crashed a lot. This year we started off really good. That was my best ever run at Daytona to start the year and then we went to Atlanta and won and then we went to Vegas and were competing for the win all race long until I crashed and then I crashed again at Phoenix. That was pretty disheartening to crash at Vegas and Phoenix, but at the same time we were really, really fast so that was good. We were really good at Texas again so it’s been okay. The results haven’t been what I want, but besides the two crashes they’ve been really good, but I need to win more.”

What was the biggest thing you learned coming from dirt racing to pavement racing?

“I think the biggest thing I had to learn is just distance racing. It’s so difficult for me and it still is so difficult for me. Going from sprint car races to stock car races, that’s just something you never learn is how to distance race. The learning curve is pretty steep in that aspect.”

How do you learn how to drive longer distances in the races?

“You just have to go through it. Now that I’ve gone through it a little bit I feel like I’ve kind of grasped a little bit of it, but there’s still a lot to learn.”

Do you ever think man, I can’t wait to get over to the Cup garage? People are already talking about what your 2020 plans will be.

“It’s cool to have people talking about it, but I love where I’m at. Honestly I love these Xfinity cars. They’re a ton of fun to drive. I sent Wayne (Auton), the Xfinity (Series) competition director, a text this last week saying that I love the Xfinity rules package right now. I don’t know if you want to call it the small spoiler, the small splitter, whatever it is. I feel like dirty air is not really that big of a deal in these cars, so they’re a ton of fun to drive and they’re a lot of fun to race too.”

Will you have a hard time getting used to when you do move to Cup?

“We don’t know when I’m going to go to Cup, so we don’t know what the rules package will be. I certainly love what I’m driving right now. They’re really, really fun to race and hopefully you guys are seeing that too. I feel like the Xfinity races have been excellent.”

Is there anything you can take from the Xfinity Series that would work well in the Cup Series?

“Hopefully car control. This year the Cup cars have so much downforce and you go to the bigger race tracks and they have less horsepower. Obviously I haven’t driven Cup cars, but I feel like they would be a little bit easier to drive than what we’re doing right now except racing. Racing would be harder because dirty air is significantly more. The Truck Series dirty air was really bad. Right now I feel like the Cup Series probably relates a little bit more to the trucks than it does the Xfinity cars.”

So you’d like it to be less turbulent air, but harder to drive with the downforce?

“I’m all for less downforce and more motor. Obviously NASCAR has been on that cycle for a while where they kept taking downforce out, taking downforce out and you know the fans didn’t really seem to like that answer so they’ve gone back the other way now.”

Have you heard anything about your plans for next year?

“No. I haven’t. It’s still early in the year. Normally I don’t figure out where I land until August-ish. We’re definitely way early in the year to know where I’m going to be.”

There’s been chatter that Erik Jones is close to a contract extension with the No. 20 Camry. Does that muddy your path to the Cup Series or is there some path that you may not even know about at this point?

“I never really pictured Erik being my hole. If you look at the Gibbs camp right now, I can’t really picture anyone being my hole because all four of their Camrys are running exceptional right now. If you watch any of the races, all four of them are right in the top five. I don’t know. I don’t know where I’m going to land. I’m just enjoying the ride right now.”

Is it a distraction when everyone starts talking about your future when we’re only in April?

“It’s cool, right? I’m honored that people want to know where I’m going to go. That’s better than people not caring. That’s really cool. I don’t know. I wouldn’t say it’s a distraction just because it kind of goes in one ear and out the other. It’s not anything that I have any input in or it’s not like I can control that. The only thing that I can control is finishing races and hopefully winning races.”

What do you think about the 2020 Xfinity Series schedule and the addition of Martinsville?

“Martinsville being on the schedule is definitely good for me because that was one of my worst race tracks whenever I was in the Truck Series. Everyone has kind of preached to me that Martinsville is a super big struggle for dirt track racers and that was very true in the Truck Series. It’ll be good for me to get seat time there before I – more seat time there if I ever make it to Cup.”

If you make it to the Cup Series?

“Yeah, unless you know something I don’t.”

It sounds like it’s a different attitude this year. Last year you were talking about how you didn’t want to waste another year in the Xfinity Series and now it sounds like this year you’d be okay with spending another season in the Xfinity Series?

“Obviously I want to go to Cup. I never meant that phrase (last year) of being I don’t want to be in (the) Xfinity (Series) because I love the Xfinity Series. Like I just said, I love the Xfinity cars. I feel like they race really well. Ultimately I get to drive race cars for a living, so that’s really cool.”

That’s a really good attitude to have because then you’re not frustrated and you love what you’re doing. What’s wrong with that?

“I don’t see anything wrong with that, thank you (laughter).”

Do you miss not have Kyle Larson in the race tomorrow after having such a good battle with him last time?

“For sure. Bristol one last year was nothing compared to Bristol two just because – I don’t know. Obviously the night race adds a lot to it, but having the Cup guys in there, that definitely adds some excitement and I feel like it adds maybe a little bit of atmosphere too. I wish we got to compete with more of those guys like you could back in the day.”

Is the Dash 4 Cash something you think about and focus on winning?

“I don’t think it’s anything that we focus on early in the race. Maybe late in the race if you’re not in position to win the race then you may adjust strategy to try and beat the other three competitors. Early in the race you’re just trying to go for the win.”

What would you do with the $100,000 if you won the Dash 4 Cash?

“Hopefully work on my future sprint car team.”

Chase Briscoe, driver of the No. 98 Nutri Chomps Ford Mustang, is one of four drivers competing this weekend in the Dash 4 Cash with a chance to win a $100,000 bonus. He spoke about that opportunity, along with the start to his season, before today’s practice.

CHASE BRISCOE, No. 98 Nutri Chomps Ford Mustang – HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR TEAM IS DOING AND HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU STACK UP IN THE FIELD? “I feel like we haven’t had the speed we expected to have. The 98 team has been kind of weird, but we’ve been consistent every week where we literally practice right around 15th-place, the first half of the race we’re 10th to 15th, and then the last 50 laps we’re right there in the top five battling for the win. So we just have to finally be able to put the whole weekend together. It’s taken us a little bit of time each and every weekend to kind of find that balance I like and that’s normally with around 50 to go, that last pit stop we finally kind of hit the nail on the head, so we’ve got to start making our practices more efficient. Instead of trying to tune a 15th-place car, we’re tuning a fifth-place car. Once we do that, we can start the race better and then get some stage points. All year long I think we’ve had four stage points and that’s not very good, so we just have to do a better job of running up front the whole entire race, instead of just the last 50. Obviously, the end is what matters, especially in this Dash 4 Cash situation, but in the points situation you’ve got to run good the whole race and that’s something we haven’t been able to do yet.”

IS IT NICE TO BE BACK AT A SHORT TRACK? “Yeah, this place – I don’t, it’s weird for me – I love Salem and Winchester. Those were probably two of my best ARCA tracks, but this place I have not figured out the handle, it seems like. I feel like once we get up to the wall here I run really good, but when we’re on the bottom I really struggle. I’m looking forward to coming here this year. This is probably the most experience I’ve ever had, where I’ve been racing week in and week out and kind of know the feeling I need and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do this weekend.”

WHAT WOULD WINNING THE DASH 4 CASH MEAN TO YOU FROM A FINANCIAL ASPECT? “It would be huge, especially growing up being a sprint car guy. I never did get to race for $100,000, so that’s a ton of money. To be able to do that would definitely be special. It would go a long way with my Chili Bowl organization. I’m trying to get a new motor for my midget right now, so if I could do that, I feel like I could maybe give Bell a little more of a run for his money at the Chili Bowl, so there’s definitely a little extra incentive to try to go win and, honestly, a lot of it would probably go toward my dirt team to try and make it a better program.”

WHERE DOES THE DIRT SIDE OF THINGS SIT FOR YOU RIGHT NOW? “I feel like Florida is a place that just doesn’t fit necessarily our style of how our cars are setup and Dave’s driving style he kind of always struggles in Florida, so we’re really excited to get back to Indiana and run some stuff. Hopefully, I can go run some sprint car stuff this year. I know we don’t have a lot of off weekends, but I know there’s one in May I’d like to go run, so hopefully I can go run and kind of see where out stuff is, but I’m looking forward to his weekend. This is really the first weekend where the USAC season gets going, so I’m looking forward to watching it tonight and see what happens.”

CHASE BRISCOE CONTINUED — HAVE YOU GOTTEN APPROVAL TO GO RUN THAT YET? “I haven’t talked to Tony yet. I feel like my sweet spot is gonna be going to talk to Tony. That’s my best chance. I don’t even know if Tony knows that I’m probably not allowed to go do it, so I’ll just go to Tony I guess and see what he says and then maybe ask for forgiveness later.”

HOW DO YOU LIKE RACING HERE AT BRISTOL? “I love the atmosphere of the place. It’s probably one of my favorite races to come to just to watch and hang out in the grandstands. I was telling those guys a second ago that Bristol’s brother and sister tracks are probably Salem and Winchester. Those are probably my two favorite and my two best tracks when I ran ARCA, but for whatever reason I can’t figure Bristol out. I don’t know what I’m missing, but I feel like this year I kind of came here with a different mindset. I’ve studied a lot and I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what I need to be doing different here when I come here, so I’m looking forward to it. The races here are always fun and I’m really anxious this year to get going just because I feel like the track compound is the least amount it has ever been and I feel like that will play into my hand a little bit more. I feel like I struggle in that typically, and I feel like the track is gonna be changing a lot more than we’ve normally seen it do, so I feel like that just helps the dirt guy’s background and we’ll see what happens this weekend.”

NO CUP DRIVERS THIS WEEKEND. DO YOU LIKE THAT? “I don’t know. I kind of have mixed feelings. I personally really enjoy racing the Cup guys. I feel like it makes me a way better race car driver just getting around those guys and learning. A lot of people don’t think we’re ever gonna beat them, so when you do go beat them it just makes you look even better. I personally like it. I’m not gonna say that I’m disappointed that Kyle is not racing this weekend because this is probably his best track, but it does make it special and it makes you feel like you’ve really earned something whenever you beat those guys. I like having them in the field, but at the same time I feel like the XFINITY guys have proved the last couple of weeks that we can run with Kyle. Even last week he wasn’t necessarily the best car, and then even back to Fontana, Cole beat him so they’re beatable, but they definitely don’t make it easy on you.”

IS THE FEELING THAT IN ORDER TO WIN THE DASH 4 CASH YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO WIN THE RACE? “Yeah, I would say so. Tyler is obviously really good everywhere he goes and Bell is probably the class of the field, I would say, out of the XFINITY guys, and even Michael has been running really, really well this year. So I feel you’re probably gonna have to win the race to win it, but that’s kind of the unique thing about Bristol is anything can happen. Here and Talladega are the two places I feel like you might not necessarily have to win the race to win the $100,000. With that being said, I feel like you’re gonna have to be up front and definitely battling for that top three to be able to do it. There’s a reason these guys are battling for this extra $100,000 and they’re the guys that are running up front each and every week, so I would say you’re probably gonna have to win the race. There might be one or two spoilers. Obviously, Cole will be really good too, so we’ll just have to find out Saturday.”

CHASE BRISCOE CONTINUED — HOW DO YOU FEEL YOU’VE DEVELOPED AS PART OF FORD’S DRIVER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM? “Going back to before I had any ride I wasn’t getting paid to do anything. My mom and dad were giving me a little bit of money, but then never had the kind of money to support me full time. I’d pay rent. It was $50 every month or two when I could afford it. I came to Bristol and would drive to Daytona and I would sneak into the race track just so I could talk to people. I had business cards made and I would hand them out. It’s funny, but I remember going up to Jack Roush one time and said, ‘Hey, I’d love to have a meeting with you,’ and he said, ‘I don’t do meetings.’ And then last year I end up getting to drive for him, so it’s kind of been cool from where I started to now. I’m getting to drive for Tony Stewart, the guys I looked up to growing up, and it’s been incredible all the support I’ve gotten from Ford and the opportunities they’ve provided me. It’s pretty hard to imagine how much my life has changed in the last four or five years, especially with everything I’ve been able to do. It’s pretty unbelievable.”

HOW HAVE YOU EVOLVED THROUGH THIS PROGRAM? YOU GOT TO DRIVE THE GT4 LAST YEAR AND CAME INTO THIS WITH VERY LITTLE ASPHALT EXPERIENCE. “Yeah, it’s been huge. I feel like a lot of people don’t realize how much inexperience I have compared to every other guy I’m racing against. Going back to even last year and getting to run the GT4 and getting to run the Truck at Eldora and getting to run the XFINITY car, just getting to jump around and do so many different things has allowed me to get so much better at what I get to do. This is the one year I’ve been so excited for because it’s the first time I’m ever gonna get to race the same car literally week in and week out. I was full-time in the Truck Series, but it’s only 21 weekends whereas this is 33 weekends, so just getting to be in that car every week I feel like I’ll be so much better by the end of the year because of that. That’s one thing throughout my career I’ve never really had is being able to be in the car consistently every week, so I’m definitely looking forward to it.”

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 iK9 Toyota Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing
    Finishing Position: 1st

What did it take to finally get your Camry out in front of the field to win this race?

“Not taking any tires was certainly a help. We jumped the field there and I was worried about the restart. I just didn’t think there was going to be enough grip. This car certainly had enough grip in it. I can’t thank iK9, the First Foundation – this Toyota Supra was awesome today. It was really fast. Really fast on the long run, I just could never get people away from me on the front side of the run to just settle into my rhythm and settle into my run and be able to go. Every time I got to the outside people would just drive by me on the bottom, and then I’d get to the inside and somebody would bust it on the outside on me and make me lose. We were just all over the place. Certainly, a fast race car once I could get rolling. Overall, Christopher Bell ran a great race. He should’ve won this thing today. I want to thank the fans and everybody for coming out and supporting the Xfinity Series and what we do here. Thank Monster Energy, Cessna, DVX Eyewear and Black Cover.”

How were you able to balance your car on long and short runs?

“Not very well. Just on the short run on the restarts everybody would get alongside of me and they would pull me backwards and mess up my hair and get me to the high side, which was the slow side and our car just wouldn’t run up there at all. Finally, once I could get inline and get everybody away from me I could start my momentum going back forward and pass some guys. It just took a while to get that going. We were better on the long run. This iK9 First Foundation Toyota Supra was awesome today. They gave me a really good piece on the long run. We worked on that in practice and it worked. It was better. Just track position. Once you all get rolling and start running a rhythm it was hard to catch the 20 (Christopher Bell) and the 2 (Tyler Reddick) there at the end. I could gain on them some, but then lapped cars would mess with you and take you backwards. Overall, just want to say thanks to the fans, Monster Energy, DVX Eyewear, Cessna, Black Clover and all of our friends and partners.”

What does it mean to have some of J.D. Gibbs friends here today in victory lane with you today?

“Any victory is special and to continue to live the J.D. (Gibbs) legacy all life long and what he meant to us and meant to this organization and the things he did for me, especially. It was cool to see that car out there today — I wish it had a better day. Overall, was excited for my group of guys to bring home a win for Joe Gibbs Racing and Joe (Gibbs), Norm Miller at Interstate Batteries – they’re all around here somewhere too. I look forward to hopefully getting another one of those tomorrow.”
