Kansasland and their other brands, like Nebraskaland, Coloradoland, and McWhorter Tire, have been growing throughout the Midwest, and we’re proud to be a small part of their business,” said Ryan Ellis, driver of the No.43 Kansasland Tire Chevy Camaro.

“We are excited to partner with two iconic brands in the car industry – American Racing Wheels and Hoonigan on this unique paint scheme to sponsor Ryan Ellis at our home track,” said Josh Dowell, Head of Motorsports Marketing at Kansasland Tire.

    Cook Out Southern 500

AJ Allmendinger, No. 16 Action Industries Camaro ZL1

    • AJ Allmendinger qualified 16th for the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
    • Allmendinger reported early his No. 16 Action Industry Chevy was plowing tight. Running 16th on lap 18, spotter, Frank Deiny, relayed to Allmendinger he was running top-five lap times. On lap 33, the No. 16 came down pit road for this first scheduled green-flag stop of the race. The team made an air pressure adjustment to help with the handling of the car, and Allmendinger cycled out to 17th place. Allmendinger told crew chief, Matt Swiderski, on lap 56 the rear tires faded quicker this run, and that was his biggest struggle. The No. 16 Chevy came back down pit road on lap 67 for a scheduled green-flag stop. Once the pit-stop sequence cycled through, Allmendinger took over 14th on lap 74, and went on to finish the opening stage 13th.
    • Allmendinger came down pit road under the stage break for tires, fuel and an adjustment. The No. 16 team picked up two spots on pit road and restarted 11th on lap 122. Allmendinger took over 10th on lap 141 and maintained position until coming down pit road under green on lap 152. By lap 171, Allmendinger made it back up to 11th before the caution came out for a track lighting issue in turns three and four. The No. 16 team came down pit road for four tires and fuel before the red flag was displayed on lap 188 to fix the lighting issue. When the field took the green flag on lap 191, Allmendinger restarted 17th and took over 15th on lap 193. Allmendinger told his team track position was critical, and he was stuck in traffic sitting 16th. The caution flag came out on lap 216, and the team came down pit road for tires and fuel. After a slow stop, Allmendinger restarted 20th on lap 221 and made his way up to 17th before the caution came back out on lap 226. The No. 16 came back down pit road, and restarted 18th on lap 229, where he finished the second stage.
    • Allmendinger stayed out under the stage break and restarted 13th on lap 236 before reporting he was tight in traffic on lap 242. The team came back down pit road on lap 266 for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment to help with the handling of the car. Allmendinger cycled out to 11th where he ran until lap 289 when he fell to 12th place, reporting he needed more rear grip on the next stop. When the next caution came out on lap 310, the No. 16 was running 11th. The team came down pit road under caution for four tires, fuel and an air pressure to help the rear of the car. On the restart on lap 316, Allmendinger was 11th and had taken over 10th by lap 319 when maneuvered around wrecking cars in front of him that brought out another caution. The No. 16 stayed out under this caution to restart eighth on lap 327. Two laps later, the caution came out again while Allmendinger was running ninth, and the team came down pit road for fresh tires and fuel. Restarting in 17th with 31 to go, Allmendinger quickly made up ground, taking over 14th on lap 343 before going on to finish 13th in the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

“I’m really happy with the whole weekend our No. 16 team had in Darlington. We made significant improvement from the spring race. Our car had a good amount of speed, and we tried to fine tune the balance all night. This was the best I’ve ever felt in a Cup car and a career-best finish for me at this track. I’m satisfied with our end result.” – AJ Allmendinger

Justin Haley, No. 31 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Camaro ZL1

    • Justin Haley qualified 29th for the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
    • Haley struggled early with lack of grip but relayed that the No. 31 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevy handled well otherwise. By lap 26, Haley sat 27th and radioed that the No. 31 Chevy began handling a little free. He made his first green-flag pit stop eight laps later for four tires and fuel. Once the green flag stops cycled through, Haley maintained position and radioed that the No. 31 was getting very loose. He made his second green-flag stop on lap 70 for fresh tires and fuel. As the stops cycled through again, Haley moved up one position but fell back to 27th, radioing that his brake pedal was going to the floor. He finished the stage in 27th.
    • Haley made his third pit stop of the day under caution for fresh tires and multiple adjustments to tighten up the No. 31 Chevy. Crew chief, Trent Owens, remarked that the tire falloff on the No. 31 was not where it needed to be. He restarted 29th on lap 123. By lap 146, Haley reported more brake issues and made his fourth pit stop on lap 153 for more tires and fuel. The first caution came out on lap 179, as the lights in turns three and four would not turn on. Haley sat 27th two laps down. The team decided to gamble and take the wave around to gain back one lap in the hopes of a quick caution as the race resumed. Unfortunately, the caution did not fall, forcing Haley to pit under green on lap 196 for tires and fuel. The next caution came out on lap 217, and Haley took the wave around to gain one lap back before restarting with nine laps remaining in the stage. The next caution came out for a spin on lap 225, as Haley missed the lucky dog spot by one position. He pitted under caution for fresh tires to try and race for the lucky dog spot. Taking the green for a one-lap shootout, Haley finished the second stage in 30th, and was able to earn the lucky dog spot to put him back on the lead lap to start the final stage.
    • During the second stage break, Haley pitted for fresh tires and fuel and started the final stage in 30th on the lead lap. By lap 251, Haley radioed that his No. 31 Chevy was now tight handling. Haley made his next green-flag pit stop from 19th place, radioing he needed front grip. Cycling out to 29th, Haley’s No. 31 Chevy began trending free once again. The next caution came out on lap 311, and Haley pitted for four tires and fuel. The race went back to green only three laps before the next caution, allowing Haley to pit again under caution for tires and fuel. Haley restarted 27th on lap 327. The field went green for only two laps, as Haley avoided the spinning cars ahead of him. He stayed out under caution and restarted as the first car one lap down in 24th on lap 336. The race remained green until the end, and Haley finished 24th.

“Darlington was tough for us this time by. We lacked grip and fought really free from tire falloff during the first part of the race. We were kind of stuck sitting two laps down and in need of clean air and got really tight before we got free again. At the very end we were able to get the car close and find what we needed for the long runs, but unfortunately it was too late for us to make any gains. We will regroup for Kansas next week.” – Justin Haley

Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200

Kyle Busch, No. 10 LA Golf Chevrolet Camaro

    • Kyle Busch qualified 14th for the Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway.
    • Although Busch’s No. 10 LAGolf Chevy fired off loose, he gained three spots before the first caution came out on lap 13. He stayed out under caution and restarted 11th on lap 17. After the first restart, Busch worked his way to eighth, but reported his No. 10 Chevy had begun handling extremely tight. Busch finished the opening stage in eighth place, after a debris caution ended the stage early on lap 44.
    • Busch pitted during the first stage break for tires, fuel, and multiple adjustments to free up the No. 10 Chevy. When the first caution of the second stage came out on lap 56, Busch reported his tires were much better, but by lap 70, he reported his No. 10 Chevy was plowing tight. Busch dropped back to 12th place where he finished the second stage, as he battled an ill-handling race car.
    • During the second stage break, Busch pitted for more of the same adjustments to free him up and give him some front turn. He restarted the final stage in 11th place, but reported he was still battling a tight-handling racecar when the next caution came out on lap 104. Crew chief, Alex Yontz, made the call to pit again for fresh tires and more adjustments, as the team had two sets of tires remaining. Busch restarted 19th with 39 laps remaining. The next caution came out with 14 laps to go, and Busch pitted once again for his last set of sticker tires and an adjustment to continue freeing up the No. 10 Chevy. He restarted 12th with 10 laps remaining before the final caution came out on lap 142, sending the race into overtime. Busch restarted 12th and was able to work his way to ninth in the closing laps, earning a top 10 in his final race with Kaulig Racing.

“Not where we wanted to finish in our last race together. We were super-loose in practice and qualifying and tried to get ahead of it, thinking that’s how our No. 10 LA Golf Chevy would be during the race, but we ended up plowing tight. Alex [Yontz] and the guys had some good stops and kept trying to free us up as much as they could without losing the rear, but unfortunately, we still fought super-tight. I wish we could have had a better outcome today.” – Kyle Busch

Daniel Hemric, No. 11 Cirkul Chevrolet Camaro

    • Daniel Hemric qualified sixth for the Sports Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway.
    • Hemric’s No. 11 No.11 Cirkul Chevrolet fired off free, and made contact with the No. 8 car on lap eight before recovering. The first caution came out on lap 13, and Hemric stayed out, restarting seventh. Still fighting a loose-handling No. 11 Chevy, Hemric fell a few positions, but worked his way back to seventh, where he finished the opening stage.
    • At the stage break, Hemric pitted for four tires, fuel, and an air pressure adjustment to help tighten the car. On the restart, Hemric restarted 10th where he maintained position until the next caution came out on lap 55. He restarted 10th where he went on to finish the second stage.
    • Hemric came down pit road at the stage break for four tires, fuel and another air pressure adjustment. On the restart with 51 to go, Hemric restarted seventh after gaining three spots off pit road. The caution flag flew again on lap 103, and Hemric pitted again for four tires and fuel, gaining two more spots on pit road. On the restart with 39 to go, Hemric restarted 15th and worked his way back into the top 10 before the next caution came out with 14 to go. Under caution, Hemric came down pit road for four tires and fuel. On the restart with 10 to go, Hemric restarted ninth before the next caution came out on lap 143, sending the race into overtime. Hemric restarted 10th, where he went on to finish the race.

“Darlington has always been a place that has been tough on me over the years, especially with my time here at Kaulig Racing. We’re not satisfied with 10th, but we are content with the day we had. It was just a solid day, and we ran between seventh and 10th all day. I’m proud of the grind and of the way we were able to bounce back. It was a good day for us, and I look forward going to Kansas.” – Daniel Hemric

Chandler Smith, No. 16 Quick Tie Products Chevrolet Camaro

    • Chandler Smith qualified 10th for the Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway.
    • The No. 16 fired off tight, but maintained position as the first caution came out on lap 12. Bruce Schlicker, the No. 16’s crew chief, radioed to Smith that he was losing time exiting each corner and to be more patient on the throttle. The race restarted on lap 17 with Smith still in 10th. He gained one spot just before the final caution of stage one came out on lap 43 and finished in ninth.
    • Smith came in for an air pressure adjustment, fresh tires and fuel during the stage break. The No. 16 gained two positions on pit road and restarted in seventh on lap 51. Smith fired off decently but suffered lack of lateral grip, losing two spots before debris brought out a caution on lap 55. Smith restarted ninth on lap 60 and gained two positions over the next 31 laps. He finished stage two in seventh.
    • Another fast full-service stop by the pit crew helped the No. 16 restart in fifth on lap 97 for the final stage. Smith was running in sixth when the next caution came out on lap 103, and he came back down into the pits for fresh tires and to top off on fuel. He restarted in 16th due to pit strategy on lap 109 and took advantage of cars on older tires over the next 24 laps to move into seventh. After another caution came out on lap 132, Smith came back down for another air pressure adjustment, more tires and fuel. The No. 16 restarted seventh on lap 138 and moved back to eighth by the time the final yellow came out to force overtime on lap 142. Smith lost four spots during the final two laps and finished the race in 12th.

“It was a solid day for the No. 16 team and the Quick Tie Products Chevy. We had great pit stops all day long and continued to make handling gains throughout.” – Chandler Smith

    Sound Bites:

“There at the end, I was just hoping that the three of them in front of me would battle it out and I could get around them. Our No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang was just so tight all day. I couldn’t get it to turn. We kept trying different adjustments, but we just couldn’t get on the other side of it. Overall, I feel like we did pretty good, and it shows that even on an off day, this team can run in the top-five. That will go well for us as we head into the playoffs.” – Cole Custer, driver of the No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang

“Obviously, we wanted to come here and get a win today at Darlington. That’s always the goal for this No. 98 Monster Energy team. The fact that we’re back in the playoffs at the moment is cool, but ultimately a win is what we’re hunting. We have some work to do, but I know that this team can do it. We’ll take this Ford Mustang and head to Kansas to try to execute a win.” – Riley Herbst, driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

    TOYOTA QUOTES

DENNY HAMLIN, No. 19 Sport Clips Haircuts Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 1st

What are your thoughts on earning your sixth Xfinity win at Darlington today?

“Yeah, I’m just proud to do this for Gordon Logan and everyone at Sports Clips. He’s been such a supporter of my career for such a long time. Thank you to Sport Clips and Help a Hero. Appreciate everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing for the opportunity to come and do one Xfinity race per year and it’s great to have a win.”

How long did it take to find a rhythm in the car today?

“It took a while. I really needed some long runs, but I really didn’t want to show everything we had until the very end of the race there. We really did a good job of maintaining what we had and man, it was going to be cool to see that race play out, but still it was a great win.”

How were you able to get the win today?

“These cars just drive so different than the Next Gen does. Really, I just maintained my pace and kept them within shouting distance and then pounced when I really needed to.”

What is it about Darlington Raceway that you love?

“First, I’ve got to thank our sponsors in Sport Clips, Toyota, TRD, FedEx, Coca-Cola, Interstate Batteries, Jordan brand, Logitech, Shady Rays. Man, it just suits my driving style really. I don’t know how else to explain it than I feel like you can manipulate the car to do the things you really need it to if it’s not perfect. And, a driver, when he feels like he can make a difference, you like the race track.”

How much confidence does this give you for tomorrow’s Southern 500?

“I thought our car was pretty good over on the Cup side. I’ll go and work on it tonight. I feel like there’s some things we can improve on, and we’ll work with the team to get it there. I’m obviously very confident.”

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK, No. 20 Pye Barker Fire & Safety Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 3rd

Are you disappointed with the finish today?

“I’m just frustrated with myself. I didn’t make the right adjustment the last stop and it’s on me. I said I didn’t need an adjustment and probably did. It sucks coming up short here twice with such fast Toyota GR Supras both times. We’ll keep plugging. Solid points day for us. Gained some points back on the 21 (Austin Hill), I think that puts us back to second in points as well. Go to Kansas next week to finish out the regular season and hope to go win all three stages instead of two.”

What is your outlook going into Kansas?

“I think for us, it’s just continuing to push as hard as we can. We’re here to win every single week and we’re going to try and do that. That’s it. I wish I would’ve been in Denny’s (Hamlin) seat and him pushing me instead of me pushing him, but that’s how it works sometimes.”

Future Focused: With AM’s inaugural Xfinity journey set to continue in the Palmetto State, the team has chosen veteran driver Brett Moffitt to lead the team’s campaign from the driver’s seat aboard the No. 25 Ford Mustang.

Moffitt, a native of Grimes, Iowa, hails numerous starts across all three of NASCAR’s National Series, including the 2018 Truck Series championship with Hattori Racing Enterprises.

Moffitt, 30, arrives on the scene at AM Racing after a stint at Our Motorsports.

Partner Intel: The Statesville, N.C.-based team will sport the signage of AM Technical Solutions on the No. 25 Ford Mustang for the 23rd of 33 NASCAR Xfinity Series races this season.

Headquartered in Austin, TX, AM Technical Solutions (AMTS) was founded in 1994.

AM Technical Solutions is a Global Architecture, Engineering & Construction firm specializing in the high-tech markets. AMTS has managed over $20B of global capital projects for over 170 different customers in 24 countries and across five continents.

AM Minute: Last weekend was another busy summer weekend for AM Racing.

In addition to the NASCAR Xfinity Series team being in action at Daytona International Speedway, the ARCA Menards Series was competing in their 15th race of the season from the historic The Milwaukee Mile.

Driver Christian Rose banked another top-12 finish with a competitive 11th-place finish in the Sprecher 150 on Sunday, August 27, 2023.

Conversely, AM Racing’s Dirt Division was victorious again at East Lincoln Motor Speedway.

Austin Wayne Self was able to claim the pole, score the victory in the dash race and host the trophy in the feature for a clean sweep.

Overall, the Statesville, N.C.-based Dirt Division has 10 victories thus far in 2023.

Thanks For Your Support: With more than 72 percent of the 2023 season complete, AM Racing and Brett Moffitt would like to thank their associate marketing partners for their support: AIRBOX Air Purifier, CForce Bottling Company, Flying Circle, Kreuz Market, Lane Frost Brand, Mechanix Wear and Mobil 1.

Brett Moffitt Xfinity Series Darlington Raceway Stats: Saturday afternoon’s Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help a Hero 200 will mark Moffitt’s sixth Xfinity start at the iconic 1.33-mile speedway.

In his previous five efforts, he has delivered one top-10 and three top-15 finishes. His track-best result occurred during the 2021 Steakhouse Elite 200 when Moffitt steered to an eight-place finish after starting 13th for Our Motorsports.

Earlier this year for AM Racing at Darlington, Moffitt in his No. 25 AM Technical Solutions Tim Richmond Throwback Ford Mustang contended for a top-10 finish but was collected in a restart accident. Despite the damage, the team fought back to a 20th-place finish in the Shriners Children’s 200.

In addition to Xfinity, Moffitt also has one NASCAR Cup Series and one NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series start at Darlington.

Brett Moffitt Xfinity Series Speedway Stats: At NASCAR Xfinity Series tracks classified as a speedway, Moffitt has made 52 starts throughout his career earning one pole and 17 top-10 finishes. He also holds an average finishing position of 15.6.

Brett Moffitt NASCAR Xfinity Series Career Stats: In 108 career Xfinity Series starts, Moffitt has earned three top-five and 30 top-10 finishes, including a second-place outing at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway in February 2021. During that tenure, he also holds an average finishing position of 17.5.

He earned a career-best Xfinity Series qualifying effort of fourth earlier this year at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway with AM Racing.

In addition to 104 Xfinity Series starts, he has achieved 45 NASCAR Cup Series and 92 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series starts to his credit.

Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway | Wawa 250 Race Recap: In the most recent NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway, Brett Moffitt and the AM Racing team chased their seventh top-10 finish of the season.

Without practice, Moffitt and the No. 25 Wawa Rechargers Ford Mustang team qualified 22nd for the 100-lap race.

From the drop of the green, Moffitt quickly maneuvered forward and entered the top-10 early in Stage 1. At the conclusion of the stage, Moffitt had steered his No. 25 Wawa Rechargers Ford Mustang to fourth.

Unfortunately, while battling for more stage points in Stage 2, Moffitt would be collected in a multi-car accident. Despite the damage, a resilient performance would put Moffitt and the team back on the race track and contend for a top-15 finish until being swept in another incident in the closing laps.

With a battered race car, somehow, Moffitt returned to the race track and finished the remaining two laps to finish a respectable 18th.

In 24 races this season, Moffit has delivered one top-five, seven top-10s, 14 top-15s, 17 top-20s and an average finish of 16.7.

From the Pit Box: Industry veteran Joe Williams is Brett Moffit’s crew chief.

He will be crew chief for his 123rd NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Friday night and his eighth race at the track dubbed “Too Tough to Tame.”

In his previous 122 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts, he has collected one win (Auto Club Speedway | February 2022), eight top-five and 28 top-10 finishes.

    Brett Moffitt Quoteboard:

On Darlington Raceway: “Darlington Raceway is one of the more challenging race tracks on the schedule. Despite the challenge, I embrace the track characteristics and look forward to collecting another top-10 finish this weekend for everyone at AM Racing.

“We had such a fast No. 25 AM Technical Solutions Ford Mustang in the spring; unfortunately, we did not leave the track with the finish we deserved. Luckily, we will get another shot at it on Saturday afternoon.

“It’s been a few races since we finished inside the top-10. I want to get some momentum back on our side and propel ourselves into the Playoff with a win. We have two more races to accomplish that.”

On 2023 Season Outlook: “We are quickly approaching the homestretch of the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series season, and I feel we have much to be proud of. Our team has strengthened as the season has marched on, and I believe the results have showcased that.

“We have been on a little bit of a roller coaster, but that will end soon. We have some excellent tracks coming up for our AM Racing team. Despite our finish at Daytona, we are energized and ready to head to Darlington and fight for more than a top-10 finish.

“With the Playoffs on the horizon, we are doing everything in our power to fight our way into Victory Lane so we can take up one of the coveted 12 spots and bring some attention to our AM Racing team.”

TITAN CONSTRUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT PARTNER WITH DAWSON CRAM AND ALPHA PRIME RACING

Titan Construction and Development, an Anaheim, California-based company, will make its sponsorship debut in the NASCAR Xfinity Series Saturday at Darlington Raceway.

And Titan will be entering NASCAR in a very big way.

Titan will be sponsoring the No. 44 car of Alpha Prime Racing and driver Dawson Cram in the Sport Clips Haircuts Help A Hero 200. Alpha Prime will have three cars in the race, and each one will honor NASCAR great

Richard Petty, the Cup Series’ all-time leading race winner and seven-time champion, and the Petty Enterprises team with a unique paint scheme.
Cram’s No. 44 will carry a design reminiscent of the Brawny-sponsored car Kyle Petty drove during his career.

“When Alpha Prime Racing asked us to be part of the trio to honor the King, Richard Petty, I was excited and honored to participate,” said Titan chief executive officer Mike Bradley. “He was one of my favorite drivers to watch.”

Cram, a 21-year-old from Mooresville, North Carolina, has driven seven times in the Xfinity Series but will be making his debut with Alpha Prime.

“This will be Dawson’s first chance with our team, and I’ve been really impressed by what he’s done in underfunded equipment,” said Alpha Prime owner Tommy Joe Martins. “He’s a great kid. It will be fun to have him in one of our Petty-themed cars.”

Also racing for Alpha Prime at Darlington will be Ryan Ellis in the No. 43 car. Sponsored Saturday by Southern Elevator, the car will carry a paint scheme similar to the Cheerios design raced by John Andretti when he drove the No. 43 for the Petty team.

Rajah Caruth, another up-and-coming driver, will drive Alpha Prime’s No. 45 car with sponsorship from Circle web development. Caruth’s car will be a throwback design to the Sprint sponsorship of Adam Petty’s cars.

The special Petty paint schemes were developed by Ryan Pistana, Alpha Prime’s graphic designer.

“I appreciate Titan coming on board with us,” said Cram, who also has driven in 31 Craftsman Truck Series races. “Darlington is a fun track, and it’s going to be a bonus to be in one of the Petty-themed cars. It will be a big weekend for Titan and for us.”

The race will be televised by USA Network beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET Saturday.

Stewart-Haas Racing: Darlington NXS Advance (Cole Custer | Riley Herbst)

    COLE CUSTER | RILEY HERBST
    Darlington NASCAR Xfinity Series Advance
    NASCAR Xfinity Series Overview

    • Event: Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 (Round 25 of 33)
    • Date: Saturday, Sept. 2
    • Location: Darlington (S.C.) Raceway
    • Layout: 1.366-mile oval
    • Time/TV/Radio: 3:30 p.m. EDT on USA/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

    Cole Custer Notes of Interest

    • Cole Custer and the No. 00 Haas Automation team for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) head to Saturday’s Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway looking to keep their latest streak of top-10 finishes alive. Custer finished sixth on Aug. 12 on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, seventh on Aug. 19 at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, and fifth last Friday night at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. The top-five at Daytona was Custer’s best NASCAR Xfinity Series finish at the 2.5-mile oval.
    • When the Xfinity Series last visited Darlington in May, Custer was coming off four consecutive top-10s and back-to-back Dash 4 Cash wins after a rough start to the 2023 season. He seemed to be finding his stride as the series was heading into the summer months, but he was without a race win this season at the time. Custer had a solid qualifying effort of fifth for the Darlington race and ran in the top-five for a majority of the race. While he was unable to catch the leaders, he did fight his way up to third place spot and held that position through the end of the 147-lap event. It equaled his best finish of the season to that point, first earned April 15 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway. He followed that performance with another third place finish May 29 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, before finally scoring his first win of the 2023 season June 3 at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway.
    • Saturday’s Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200 at Darlington will mark Custer’s fifth career Xfinity Series start at the track nicknamed “Too Tough to Tame.” In the August 2019 race there, the Ladera Ranch, California, native crossed the finish line second but was awarded the victory when apparent race winner Denny Hamlin’s racecar failed postrace inspection. It was Custer’s eighth of 10 career Xfinity Series victories. Custer finished second to Brad Keselowski in the 2018 Darlington race and ninth in 2017, all behind the wheel of the No. 00 SHR Ford. Custer has an additional seven starts outside of the Xfinity Series at Darlington, all in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2020 to 2022. His best of those outings was an 11th-place effort in the September 2021 Southern 500. He scored two other Darlington top-15s in the Cup Series – a 12th-place finish in September 2020 and a 14th-place finish last September.

    Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

    • Riley Herbst hopes a recent spate of mechanical issues is behind him and his No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang for SHR as they take to the 1.366-mile, egg-shaped Darlington oval for Saturday’s Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help A Hero 200. Heading into last Friday’s race at Daytona, Herbst held the 12th and final spot in this year’s NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs by a three-point cushion, and he was hoping to widen that margin with a fast racecar that he was able to keep in the top-10 during in the initial part of the race. But mechnical issues hampered his performance the rest of the way, and he was able to salvage only a 24th-place finish. He left Daytona 13th in the playoff standings, 20 points behind 12th-place Parker Kligerman.
    • Saturday’s race will mark Herbst’s eighth career Xfinity Series start at Darlington. While he’s experienced a mixed bag of results, he has enjoyed some of his career-best races at the “Lady in Black.” He finished third there in May 2022, and fourth in September 2020. While his day ended early after contact in this year’s May race, Herbst is banking on his successful history on intermediate-style tracks, where he’s scored 38 career top-10s. While Herbst is still seeking his first Xfinity Series win, SHR has been victorious twice at Darlington in the Xfinity Series – in August 2019 with Custer and in May 2020 with Chase Briscoe.
    • With only two races remaining before the 12-driver NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs begin Sept. 15 at Bristol, Herbst’s fight for a playoff spot will rely on the kind of form he and the No. 98 Monster Energy team exhibited at the outset of the season, when they reeled off six consecutive top-10 finishes in the opening six races, including a pair of top-fives. A win would lock him into the final playoff field, but he can still point his way in with a flurry of stage points and strong finishes at Darlington and in the final regular-season race at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.

Cole Custer, Driver of the No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang

Last time the Xfinity Series visited Darlington, you scored a solid third-place finish after running in the top-five all day. What are your expectations heading into this Labor Day weekend race?

“I think we learned a lot at Darlington last time and, hopefully, we can kind of fine-tune what we had so we can be right in the mix this weekend. The No. 00 Haas Automation team felt like we were solid when we went there last time, so it’s just a matter of making what we had even better. I feel like we’ve done that at every track that we’ve revisited this year, and I’m hoping we have the speed to contend for not only the pole and stage wins, but also the race win. It would be cool to get another trophy from Darlington and get that win as we head into the playoffs.”

Darlington is a beast of its own. How do you navigate such a difficult racetrack as you also try to go for the win?

“Darlington is definitely a challenge. Turn one, you just really have to weigh risk versus reward. You’re always wondering how far you can drive in without hitting the wall, going up the hill on exit to get the speed. It’s kind of nerve-racking there. Then, you’re up against the fence and, really, it just depends on your racecar if you have to run to the wall or run a lower lane. You’re always kind of edgy with the back of the car there, and then you’re waiting for turn two. You’re able to just drive off and that makes it a little bit easier. In turn three, you’re hard on the brakes, so then you wash up. You’re constantly modulating brakes and holding your breath that you don’t carry too much speed and hit the fence in the center of three and four. Finally, it’s always a really tight exit off of turn four to head back to the start-finish line. As a driver, this is one of the hardest places we go to.”

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

Darlington has been a roller coaster of a racetrack for you and your career. You’ve had some solid runs there, but also some bad luck that took you out of contention for top finishes. How are you approaching this weekend knowing that you still have a chance to point your way into the playoffs, but also trying to not get yourself in trouble?

“This is a tough situation that I never wanted to be in with how strong we started the season. I feel like a lot of bad luck was thrown our way, and I keep hoping that it’ll be behind us. We’re obviously on the outside looking in now for the playoffs, but you can’t give up. There’s always a chance and, at the end of the day, if you win, you’re in the playoffs. We have to be conscious of the points situation, but we have had the speed to run up front to contend for points and possibly wins. Darlington is an easy track to get yourself in trouble because it is so difficult. You have to be patient and not drive over your head. Hopefully we can do just that and find ourselves in a better position coming out of the race weekend.”

You’ve come a long way since the season began in February. With only two races left in the regular season, how do you think you and the No. 98 Monster Energy team have grown in the time since?

“We’ve come a long way, and we’ve been through a lot together. Going through the bad luck and bad runs is never easy, but we’ve been able to work on our communication and figure out the issues after each bad run. I’ve enjoyed working with Davin (Restivo, crew chief) since we switched crew chiefs in June, and hopefully we can find our stride again soon. This Monster Energy team deserves to be in victory lane, so hopefully we can find our way there soon.”

    Driver Quotes

“I am looking forward to getting back to Darlington this weekend. Daytona got us once again but I know we still have great momentum going that we can take to “the Lady in Black” and hopefully put this Accelerate Professional Talent Solutions Chevrolet back in Victory Lane.” – Sam Mayer

“I’m really looking forward to getting to Darlington this weekend. We finished second here in the spring and I can’t think of a better place to come to off of a win than here. We’ve had extremely strong cars the last couple of years here, and I feel very confident that our Hellmann’s Chevrolet will be just as fast again on Saturday. Hopefully, we can go out and execute the way we have been and continue to close that gap on the point lead and the regular season championship. We know what is ahead of us and what we have to do, now we just need to make it happen.” – Justin Allgaier

“We’ve run really well at Darlington in the past, and we need to run that way this weekend. We would like to start the playoffs with some momentum, and a win or a good finish here would help that along. Darlington is tough, but we’ve been second here so we proved we can do it. I knowthe Bass Pro Shops/TRACKER Boats & ATVs Chevrolet is up to it and so is our No. 8 team.” – Josh Berry

“We were working our way towards the front when we visited Darlington a few months ago, but got caught up in someone else’s mess that ended our day. I know Jason (Burdett, crew chief) and this entire No. 9 team are working extremely hard to make sure we have that speed and a little more for this weekend. Darlington has been good to me in the past, and hopefully we can be in contention for the win at the end.” – Brandon Jones

    ABOUT BOOZE POPS

Booze Pops from Charleston, SC was the brainchild of Woodrow (Woody to his friends, and since you are reading this that means you too) Norris, a former US Army mechanic after a tour of duty in Iraq. He was at a friend’s birthday party where he was offered a popsicle infused with alcohol. Woody immediately wondered if anything like this was available on one of America’s favorite pastimes, an ice cream truck. After researching the market, Woody learned that no ice cream men were cool enough to pass out alcohol-infused popsicles and so Woody bought an ice cream truck.

On his first trip through a neighborhood, Woody wasn’t sure if his idea would be a hit, but when he returned for a second trip, he had everyone from Little League coaches to housewives lined up on street corners waiting on him, and Booze Pops has been bringing communities together ever since.

Booze Pops offers a menu based on customer-tested products of Adult Pops, Jello Shots, and ice cream for the kids.

They are available for corporate events, weddings, bachelor/bachelorette parties, birthday parties, block parties and more. Check them out at www.boozepop.com.

SOUTHERN ELEVATOR ELEVATES PARTNERSHIP WITH ELLIS – WITH A PRIMARY SPONSORSHIP OF THE NO.43 CHEVY AT DARLINGTON RACEWAY

Ryan Ellis and Alpha Prime Racing are proud to announce that the Southern Elevator Company will be the primary sponsor of Ryan Ellis and the No.43 Chevrolet Camaro in the Sport Clips Haircuts VFW Help a Hero 200 at Darlington Raceway on Saturday, September 2nd, 2023.

Not only will Southern Elevator debut as a primary sponsor in NASCAR, but they’ll do so with a big splash. The No.43 Southern Elevator Chevy will be running a special throwback scheme honoring John Andretti’s Cheerios/PopSecret Pontiac Grand Prix that Andretti raced for Richard Petty Enterprises in 2000.

Southern Elevator Company is a full-service elevator maintenance, repair, and modernization company serving North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. They previously announced a multi-race secondary sponsorship with the No.43 Chevy and Ellis, which included both races at Martinsville, Darlington, and Charlotte. Darlington will be their first race as a primary sponsor.

“It’s been really cool to see how quickly this partnership has grown,” said Ryan Ellis, the No.43 Southern Elevator Chevy Camaro driver. “We just started speaking with Southern Elevator earlier this year, and I’ve gotten to know their employees well. They have a phenomenal group of people there, and everyone seems excited about this partnership – both from the team side and Southern Elevators’. I hope we can give them a great run at Darlington and grow this partnership even more for 2024! It’s also extremely exciting to be running this scheme – especially in their debut. It’s one of the more iconic schemes from my childhood, and it means a lot to me to honor everyone involved with the original car this weekend.”

“We are excited to expand our partnership with Ryan and his team,” said Christopher Short, President of Southern Elevator. “Being partnered with the No.43 is phenomenal for Southern Elevator and aligns with our brand. We are happy to have him on our “We are Southern” team.
