Sam Mayer, Embraces Road Course Challenges at Road America as the NASCAR XFINITY Series Takes Center Stage, July 29

ELKHART LAKE, Wis., July 18, 2023 – Road course racing doesn’t float to the top of a favorite list for many young NASCAR drivers, but one young talent is breaking the mold with his exceptional experience and passion behind the wheel. Meet Sam Mayer, a rising star from Franklin, Wisconsin, whose early introduction to road course racing has set him apart from his peers in the world of stock-car racing.

Mayer’s journey into motorsports started at the tender age of 4, when he discovered his passion for racing in a go-kart. From that moment on, his fate was sealed, and he embarked on a remarkable journey, honing his skills at Franklin Karts and Badger Kart Club in Dousman. Road racing quickly became his “bread and butter,” shaping him into the formidable road course expert he is today.

“It’s how I grew up,” Mayer fondly recalls, emphasizing how road course events have always been a confidence builder for him. His love for road racing is unwavering, and he embraces each opportunity to compete on these unique tracks, especially the beloved Road America, cherished by the racing community.

Currently in his second full-time season, driving the No. 1 Chevrolet for JR Motorsports, Mayer’s dedication to road course racing has led him to the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Road America on July 29. Alongside this event, he relishes competing at tracks such as Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, the roval at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and Bristol Motor Speedway.

“Road America is one of the tracks that’s at the top of my list,” Mayer proudly declares.

Despite facing challenges in previous events at Road America, including a chain-reaction incident in 2021 and a 20th-place finish in 2022, Mayer’s unwavering determination fuels his desire to excel at the legendary track. His impressive experience extends beyond NASCAR, having competed in a pair of Trans-Am Series races in a Camaro, securing a remarkable TA2 victory at Road America during the 2021 season.

Preparing for the forthcoming race, Mayer is well aware of the changes that have taken place at Road America. The track underwent a significant resurfacing project in October 2022, including pit lane, fine grading, a new base layer, and a brand-new final surface asphalt layer. The first repaving since 1995 promises a faster and more challenging track, requiring precise car setup and driving finesse.

Mayer anticipates that the track will be exceptionally fast, and he and his crew chief, Taylor Moyer, are leaving no stone unturned in fine-tuning their car setup for the race.

“On the driver’s side, it’s going to be fast,” Mayer confidently expresses. “We’re going to be hauling the mail around that place. It’s going to be tons of fun, and I’m looking forward to seeing what it provides for these XFINITY cars.”

He also recognizes the challenges that await his team. Nevertheless, he trusts in their resources and expertise to ensure they perform exceptionally well from the moment they hit the track.

Even amidst the demanding schedule, Mayer intends to cherish time with family and friends during his visit to Elkhart Lake, where Road America is located.

Mayer’s eyes light up with enthusiasm when asked about his favorite section of the track. “I love the back section around Canada Corner,” he shares. “You take Canada Corner, and you kind of go up the hill through the esses right there.”

For Mayer, stringing together a strong lap at the 14-turn track is challenging. He highlights the importance of precise braking, optimizing braking power, and downforce in the XFINITY cars. Additionally, he emphasizes the need to avoid spinning the tires on the exit, as the track can be notoriously slick.

As Sam Mayer gears up for the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Road America, fans and fellow racers eagerly await to witness his road-course prowess on display once again.

The NASCAR XFINITY Series weekend will be jammed with on-track and off-track action as the Porsche Carrera Cup, OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Challenge, and GRIDLIFE will also be on the schedule. There will also be open karting and Super Moto at the Briggs & Stratton Motorplex.

Ambetter Health 200: Nemechek Captures First Victory at “The Magic Mile”

Joe Gibbs Racing driver wins under caution following green-white-checkered finish.

LOUDON, N.H. – The NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) makes one annual visit to the Granite State each year, and the latest visit may just have cemented a new championship contender.

John Hunter Nemechek avoided several multi-car wrecks and held on through two late restarts, including a green-white-checkered finish on his way to a victory in the Ambetter Health 200 NXS race on Saturday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS).

Driving the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, Nemechek collected his NXS-leading fourth win of the season, the sixth of his career and his first at “The Magic Mile.” It was also Joe Gibbs Racing’s 199th career NASCAR victory.

“I am so proud of this 20 team,” said Nemechek, who led a race-high 137 laps. “I’m so thankful for this opportunity. Hats off to all of our guys at Joe Gibbs Racing, and a huge shout-out to all of the fans here. I love coming up here [to New Hampshire].”

Nemechek, a 26-year-old North Carolina native, was up front much of the way, allowing him to miss several big wrecks throughout the race, including nine-car crash following a restart at lap 70, a three-car spin in turn one on lap 196 that led to the green-white-checkered finish and a two-car collision just after he took the white flag, leading to his victory under caution.

“I was a little worried on the last restart,” said Nemechek, who has raced full-time in all three NASCAR national series. “I didn’t know who was saving what. I’m so thankful to sit behind the wheel of this 20 car.

“The goal has been to win races, but that’s very hard to do. There’s some really tough competition for sure. We’re going to do everything we can to be there at the end.”

Pole-winner Chandler Smith (10 laps led) finished second, with Austin Hill placing third, Daniel Hemric in fourth and Sammy Smith (stage two winner, 18 laps led) in fifth. Justin Allgaier led 27 laps and won stage one before finishing sixth.

“We definitely have some work to do with this package,” said Hill, who trails leader Nemechek by 33 points in the NXS standings. “For us to salvage a third-place finish, with us not having that great of a car, we’ll take it and move on.”

Notable finishes among New England natives included Kaz Grala (Boston, Mass.) placing 13th in a backup car following a crash in practice. C.J. McLaughlin (Framingham, Mass.) came in 28th, Parker Kligerman (Greenwich, Conn.) was 32nd and Anthony Alfredo (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished 34th.

Nemechek completed the overtime-aided 206-lap event in two hours, 38 minutes, 40 seconds, averaging 82.417 mph with 20 cars finishing on the lead lap. Seven leaders exchanged the lead 13 times with 10 caution periods taking up 60 laps.

NHMS’s NASCAR weekend events concludes Sunday with the Crayon 301 NASCAR Cup Series race at 2:30 p.m. ET (USA, PRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).

    ● Nemechek remains the championship leader after New Hampshire with an 33-point advantage over second-place Austin Hill.

    Sound Bites:

“I wouldn’t say the results of this race were a positive, even with gaining points. I don’t know what I was doing when I got into the No. 10 car there. I thought there was some room there, and I just wasn’t clear. That really ruined our top-three day, and now we’ll finish 20th. It’s super frustrating. I apologize to Austin Dillon, the No. 10 team, and my guys for that incident. We go to Pocono next week though, and that’s a track that I won at in the ARCA series. Hopefully, we can build on that and park this No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang in victory lane.” – Riley Herbst, driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

“I got a decent start there on the last restart, and I just got tight. Off of Turn Four, the No. 2 tried to clear himself on me, and I was still there. Got loose and then got into him. Ultimately, it wrecked both of us. It just didn’t work out right for either of us. It wasn’t the right move. The No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang was so good, but I think we just needed a little bit more. I thought we could compete with anyone today. We’re digging. We have really fast cars, it’s just a matter of getting that little bit more.” – Cole Custer, driver of the No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang

    Next Up:

The next event on the NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule is the Pocono 225 on Saturday, July 22 at Pocono (Pa.) Raceway. The race begins at 5:30 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by USA and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

LOUDON, NH (July 15, 2023) – John Hunter Nemechek dominated the day at New Hampshire Motor Speedway and won his second straight race on Saturday afternoon. It is the fourth win of the season for the North Carolina-native, who expands his points lead. For Toyota, Nemechek’s victory helps the manufacturer close in on major milestones as it was the 598th NASCAR national series win and 196th NASCAR Xfinity Series triumph. Sammy Smith (fifth) battled from the back after an unapproved adjustment to win the second stage and finish inside the top-five, while Kaz Grala (13th) started last in a backup Toyota GR Supra after a practice accident and drove through the field to earn his third straight top-15 finish.

    TOYOTA QUOTES

JOHN HUNTER NEMECHEK, No. 20 Persil Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 1st

How nerve-wracking is final restarts like that?

“It’s nerve-wracking for sure. Just hats off to this whole 20 team, and everyone that works on this Joe Gibbs Racing Persil Toyota GR Supra. It was as fast as Xfinity 10G today. Hats off to them. I appreciate it. They’ve had dominate Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota GR Supras up here the last few years. I had to hold up my end of the bargain.”

Do you feel like this team is clicking?

“For sure. We’ve clicked from almost day one. We’ve been consistent all year. Just time to keep clicking off all of these victories.”

SAMMY SMITH, No. 18 TMC Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 5th

You had to drive through the field twice today and scored a top-five finish. Do you look at this as an accomplishment or a missed opportunity?

“A missed opportunity. We had an up-and-down day. We came from the back twice and worked our way back up there. Stage two kind of fell our way a little bit. We got some track position, just kind of fell off there compared to the 20 (John Hunter Nemechek). Good day overall. Thanks to TMC, Pilot Flying J, Allstate Peterbuilt Group, Golden Harvest, Renda Group, Toyota – everyone that helps us get here. Frustrating day, but a good day and glad we could capitalize on getting good stage points that we did. Just things to keep working on.”

KAZ GRALA, No. 26 Island Coastal Lager Toyota GR Supra, Sam Hunt Racing

    Finishing Position: 13th

Can you talk about battling through the adversity to earn another strong finish?

“I’m really proud of everyone at SHR (Sam Hunt Racing) for the hustle. That was a massive task for them to get the backup Island Coastal Lager Supra ready. I hate it for them, because they brought such a good primary car, and it was certainly none of our doing – nothing of anyone’s doing that put us in the box that we were put in. Really cool to see everyone pitch in and pull together and put together as good of a race car as we had there. I was really pleased with it. We were able to drive through the field and get to the top-15, which is this year a really good place to run in this series. The field is super deep, so a top-15 day in a backup car no less I think is major accomplishment. I think we got a really good finish there. Happy to be able to end it on a good note. I know it was a tough weekend for everybody, but I feel like we are coming out of it pretty strong. It was cool to see. Excited for Pocono next weekend, hopefully, we will race our primary car there.”

Unfortunately, an electrical issue on the last lap spoiled the team’s top-10 finish and the team was credited with an 11th-place result.

Austin Wayne Self returned to the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series tour aboard his No. 22 AIRBOX Air Purifier Ford F-150. Qualifying 27th, Self-impressed in the rain – quickly entering the top-10 in the early onset of the O’Reilly Auto Parts 150.

The team will work to salute all the men and women, past and present, who truly deserve the title of Hero, every weekend.

Brett Moffitt Xfinity New Hampshire Motor Speedway Stats: Saturday afternoon’s Ambetter Health 200 will mark Moffitt’s third start at the 1.054-mile speedway.

In his previous two efforts, Moffitt has delivered one top-10 and two top-15 finishes. His track-best result occurred during the 2021 Ambetter Get Vaccinated 200 when Moffitt steered to a ninth-place finish after starting seventh for Our Motorsports.

In addition to his previous two Xfinity Series races, the popular driver also has three NASCAR Cup Series starts at the New Hampshire race track to coincide with one NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series start in the Granite State.

Brett Moffitt Xfinity Series Speedway Stats: At NASCAR Xfinity Series tracks classified as a speedway 1.0-mile to 2.0-mile in length, Moffitt has made 51 starts throughout his career earning one pole and 16 top-10 finishes. He also holds an average finishing position of 15.7.

He earned a career-best Xfinity Series qualifying effort of fourth earlier this year at Las Vegas (Nev.) Motor Speedway with AM Racing.

In addition to 101 Xfinity Series starts, he has achieved 45 NASCAR Cup Series and 92 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series starts to his credit.

Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway | Alsco Uniforms 250 Race Recap: In the most recent NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway, Brett Moffitt and the AM Racing were hoping history would repeat itself.

In the spring at the hybrid superspeedway track, Moffitt and the AM Racing team earned their second career top-10 finish when they posted a then-season-high sixth-place finish in the RAPTOR King of Tough 250.

On the heels of a top-five finish the week prior at the Chicago Street Course, Moffitt and the Joe Williams Jr.-led team were hopeful to continue the momentum.

After a subpar qualifying effort of 27th in the No. 25 AM Technical Solutions Ford Mustang, Moffitt utilized the drat following the first stage to cleverly maneuver his race car inside the top-10 where he remained throughout the remainder of the race.

A late race caution threw the race into overtime and while battling inside the top-10 on the last lap of the race, Moffitt was running on fumes when his car began to fumble coming out of Turn 4.

The stumble cost the team their fifth top-10 finish of the season and instead delivered a respectable 11th-place finish.

In 17 races this season, Moffit has delivered one top-five, four top-10s, 11 top-15s, 12 top-20s and an average finish of 16.1.

From the Pit Box: Industry veteran Joe Williams is Brett Moffit’s crew chief.

He will be crew chief for his 116th NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday and his third at the 1.054-mile facility in Loudon, New Hampshire.

In his previous 115 NASCAR Xfinity Series starts, he has collected one win (Auto Club Speedway | February 2022), eight top-five and 25 top-10 finishes.

    Brett Moffitt Quoteboard:

On New Hampshire Motor Speedway: “New Hampshire has been relatively a good track for me and I’m hoping to continue that statistic with my AM Racing team on Saturday afternoon.

“I feel like we were robbed of a top-10 finish last weekend at Atlanta, so as a team, we’re going to New Hampshire looking for some redemption.

“Our AM Racing team is really in a good place right now and we just need to keep working hard and future focused and I believe we’ll have a good race result.”

On 2023 Season Outlook: “We’ve officially reached the halfway point of the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series and I feel like we have a lot to be proud of.

“However, as the Playoffs are on the horizon, we are doing everything in our power to either point our way in or fight our way into Victory Lane so we can take up one of the coveted 12 spots and really bring some attention to our AM Racing team.”

    • Time/TV/Radio: 3 p.m. EDT on USA/PRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio

    Cole Custer Notes of Interest

    • Cole Custer and the No. 00 Haas Automation team look to keep the momentum rolling as they head into Saturday’s Ambetter Health 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. A solid third-place finish in last Saturday’s Alsco Uniforms 250 at Atlanta Motor Speedway netted Custer his 11th consecutive top-10 finish and his second top-five in a row. Custer ran in the top-12 for a majority of the race and, in a fuel-saving call, was able to bypass his competitors on a NASCAR overtime restart to jump from 10th to third. It was his best finish on a superspeedway-style track and his best finish since the Atlanta repave and reconfiguration. Custer now has the longest top-10 streak of any driver in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.
    • Saturday’s Ambetter Health 200 will mark Custer’s fourth Xfinity Series start at New Hampshire. In his three prior starts from 2017 to 2019, he never finished outside the top-10. His best finish was a second-place run in his last Xfinity Series race there in July 2019, when he was bested only by race-winner Christopher Bell. Custer also has seven New Hampshire starts outside of the Xfinity Series – three in the NASCAR Cup Series, three in the NASCAR Truck Series, and one in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East. Two of those were wins – the 2014 NASCAR Truck Series race and the 2013 K&N Pro Series race.
    • Custer will be pulling double duty for the second weekend in a row as he’ll also be behind the wheel of the No. 51 BioHaven / Jacob Companies Ford Mustang for Rick Ware Racing in Sunday’s Crayon 301 Cup Series race.
    • Custer has been on a roll for the past 11 weeks since the April 1 race at Richmond (Va.) Raceway. It’s a stretch that includes two race wins and three pole qualifying efforts, and most importantly has put him in a strong position for the 2023 NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs. He’s jumped to third in the driver standings from the 10th position he held prior to Richmond. He is now 45 points behind John Hunter Nemechek, the regular-season championship leader. Custer’s streak of 11 top-10s in a row began with his fifth-place result at Richmond. With only nine races left before the playoffs begin Sept. 15 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Custer is looking to close the points gap even further and take home not only more wins, but the regular-season championship trophy.

    Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

    • Riley Herbst and the No. 98 Monster Energy team are ready to show their resilience and ability to rebound in Saturday’s Ambetter Health 200 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Last Saturday at Atlanta Motor Speedway, Herbst experienced the high of passing Josh Berry to steal the win in the opening stage. Herbst and the No. 98 team felt they were in position to contend for the win looking forward, but an untimely flat left-rear tire put Herbst in a bad position on track, where he was caught up in an accident that forced him to retire to the garage on lap 88. While he may not have gotten the ending he had hoped for, Herbst’s stage win was the first of his Xfinity Series career, which began in 2019.
    • Saturday’s race at New Hampshire will mark Herbst’s third at the 1.058-mile oval. In his prior two visits, he earned a best result of 10th in his first start there in July 2021. He also has two New Hampshire starts outside of the Xfinity Series, both in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East in 2018 and 2019. He finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
    • With only nine races to go before the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs begin on Aug. 15 at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Herbst is looking to secure his spot in the 12-driver playoff field. He is currently 11th in the driver standings but 12th in the playoff standings, with a six-point cushion ahead of 13th-place Parker Kligerman. Herbst and his team are looking to find the momentum they exhibited at the outset of the season in order to better protect their points buffer and work their way upward in the playoff standings by accumulating points at a greater rate. A race win, of course, would lock Herbst into the postseason.

Cole Custer, Driver of the No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang

Your statistics at New Hampshire are strong across all of the NASCAR national touring series, including wins in the Truck Series and K&N Pro Series East. How do you feel coming into this weekend’s race?

“I love going to New Hampshire. I love seeing the fans up there because of how hardcore they are. It’s a very technical and difficult racetrack for a driver, though. It can be very awkward, and it can be a challenge. But overall, that’s what makes it fun for us. I’m hoping that the No. 00 Haas Automation team can put a strong weekend together so we can park our Ford Mustang in victory lane again.”

After a strong race at Atlanta last weekend, what’s your plan heading to New Hampshire?

“The plan is always to compete for the win, but this track isn’t always the kindest to us drivers. New Hampshire’s just so hard because you have to roll the corners so long and modulate the brake pedal in order to do well at this track. It’s a very tricky race. You have to be patient so you don’t overdrive the cars and get yourself into trouble. It can honestly be a challenge for a driver, but I’m ready for it. Hopefully, I can keep calm and bring home a strong finish this weekend.”

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

Last Saturday’s race at Atlanta provided racing’s highs and lows for the No. 98 Monster Energy team after you won your first career stage, then ended up being collected in an accident. How do you get past those heartbreaking races and move on to the next?

“You just have to take it race-by-race. We’ve had some bad luck, and I hate it for this No. 98 Monster Energy team. We were so strong in the beginning of the year and, honestly, we were building a strong race in Atlanta. We were a top-three car, for sure, and I think we could’ve been a contender for the win. That cut tire caused so much trouble, and we had to end our day early. You can’t dwell on that, though. Each weekend is a new race and a new opportunity to show our speed and determination.”

You’ve had two prior starts at New Hampshire with a best finish of 10th. What’s the plan for this weekend?

“The plan is simple – survive and get back on track. We had some bad luck in both Chicago and Atlanta, so we want to get back to where we were at the beginning of the season. There have been a lot of ups and downs, so I really want to end these final races of the regular season strong. New Hampshire has always been a fun track for me, but we got involved in a wreck last year that wasn’t of our own doing. We have the speed to run well there, so hopefully you’ll see that this weekend.”

    Driver Quotes

“New Hampshire is a track that we have not had the best luck at but I am looking forward to getting back there and capitalizing on all I have learned to have a good finish. My No. 1 team put together a solid car for me last week to fight back from that incident in the final stage and grab a solid fifth-place finish, so I hope we can continue on to another top-five effort while contending for the win.” – Sam Mayer

“New Hampshire has been a really strong track for us as of late, and it’s always a nice feeling coming back to a track as the defending race winner. Hopefully we can execute the same way we did here last year and come away with another victory with our BRANDT Professional Agriculture Chevrolet. I know that Jim (Pohlman, crew chief) and all the guys on this No. 7 team are ready to go, so we’ll see what we can do.” – Justin Allgaier

“We were pretty good at New Hampshire the last two seasons, getting a pole last year and running really well late into the race. It’s a tough place to race, as flat as it is, which puts a premium on how your car handles. We’ll take the JARRETT Chevrolet up there and give it our best shot this weekend, hopefully getting some consistency back to enter the playoffs with some momentum.” – Josh Berry

“New Hampshire races like a big short track with the long straightaways, tight turns and just how flat the track is overall. It’s a tough place to get around but Jason (Burdett, crew chief) and this team knows how to build a strong car for this place and I can’t wait to get there this weekend. We’re due for a good run and hopefully that starts this weekend.” – Brandon Jones

Superspeedway, seventh April 29 at Dover (Del.) Motor Speedway, third May 13 at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway, third May 29 at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, won June 3 at Portland (Ore.) ● Nemechek remains the championship leader after Atlanta with a 16-point advantage over second-place Austin Hill.

    Sound Bites:

“Man, those final laps were chaos. We were all just wondering if we were close on fuel, so we were all running around the apron. You’re just praying that no one runs out of gas. Half the field did though. The No. 00 Haas Automation team did a great job on fuel mileage today. We just didn’t have a ton of help there at the end. You know how it is here, once you try to make a move, you get shuffled back. It was fun though, and we had a great Ford Mustang. Things just didn’t happen to play out right. I thought the seas might part there at the end when everyone was running out of gas. We got it up to third though. It was a good run, and we’ll try to keep it rolling.” – Cole Custer, driver of the No. 00 Haas Automation Ford Mustang

“We had a pretty good night going, obviously. The No. 98 Monster Energy team won the first stage, and I thought our Ford Mustang was good enough to run in the top-three. Then, I just rolled it into Turn 1 on the restart and I knew my tire was down. I tried to save it and probably got out of the gas too soon. It just lost it on me. I’m sorry to everyone else who got involved. I hate this for my Stewart-Haas Racing guys. I just wish we hadn’t blown a tire.” – Riley Herbst, driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang

    Next Up:

The next event on the NASCAR Xfinity Series schedule is the Ambetter Health 200 on Saturday, July 15 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The race begins at 3 p.m. EDT with live coverage provided by USA and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

  • Nemechek scores Xfinity Series victory in thrilling Alsco Uniforms 250

Nemechek scores Xfinity Series victory in thrilling Alsco Uniforms 250

HAMPTON, Ga. (July 9, 2023) – John Hunter Nemechek took advantage of an overtime restart and pulled away from a trio of Kaulig Racing challengers to score a thrilling victory Saturday night in the Alsco Uniforms 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

As the laps counted down, Kaulig Racing’s Justin Haley, Chandler Smith, and Daniel Hemric appeared to be in position for a 1-2-3 finish, but hard-charging Austin Hill spun on lap 162 while attempting to break up the Kaulig party, bringing out the caution flag and setting the stage for the overtime finish.

Hill’s No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevy had picked up a ton of momentum and was making a move on the leaders when he went into a single car slide after nearly making contact with Parker Kligerman in the No. 48 Chevy.

In the overtime restart, Nemechek started on the front row and was able to pull away from the pack in his No. 20 Toyota. Kaulig’s Hemric finished second in his No. 11 Chevy and Haley, who led 80 laps and appeared to have the car to beat before the overtime session, finished fourth after running out of fuel. Cole Custer moved into third in his No. 00 Ford. JR Motorsports driver Sam Mayer rounded out the top five in his No. 1 Chevy.

The win was the third victory of the season for Nemecheck, the fifth of his Xfinity Series career, and first at the Hampton, Ga., track. Nemecheck increases his series points lead to 16 over Hill with the win.

Nemecheck says he doesn’t know how things would’ve played out without the extra laps, but he was glad he didn’t have to find out.

“I got a huge push from the 11 there so thanks to Daniel (Hemric) for giving me that push,” Nemechek said. “Thanks to the fans who came out tonight, I appreciate you guys.”

Nemecheck started the race in second and the only laps he led in the race were the three overtime laps.

“I don’t know if the track changed a ton but we had to keep making our car better all night,” Nemecheck said. “The guys made the right adjustments and got us to where we needed to be. It came down to an overtime finish and we were able to execute on the restart and got the win.”

Full-time Cup Series star Haley, who was making an Xfinity start in the No. 10 Kaulig Racing machine, was obviously frustrated with how the race ended.

“You think you have it won till the caution came out and then things don’t pan out,” Haley said. “We were just a little short on fuel there.”

Hemric rallied to finish second in his No. 11 Chevy after Haley’s car fell sharply off the pace in the overtime laps.

“I thought we put ourselves in position there to put our No. 11 Chevrolet in Victory Lane after pushing the 20 there,” Hemric said. “Everybody was kind of short on fuel or iffy on fuel and me running third the majority of last run, I thought that maybe allowed me to save enough.

“I thought we were in good shape,” Hemric continued. “I drove back and was expecting a big shot in the back and tandem up to the 20, and thought we would have a big run, but whatever happened, I guess maybe (Haley) lost fuel pressure, and when that happened he pulled out of line or got out of line. It put him in my left rear and just killed all the momentum at that point that just put us in a scramble to stay second. It’s disappointing for us to be coming down to take the trophy and then fall short like that.”

A massive crash on the backstretch on lap 89 collected 10 cars and shifted the outcome of the race, ultimately ending the night for early-race frontrunners Sheldon Creed, Ryan Sieg and Riley Herbst. Anthony Alfredo and Brandon Jones also were involved in the spark-flying melee. Creed won Stage 2 in his No. 2 Chevy and Sieg led 15 laps of the race in his No. 39 Ford.
