RCR NXS Race Recap: Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL

Jesse Love and the No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet Team Battle at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL to Advance to the Round of 8

    Finish: 19th
    Start: 8th
    Points: 6th

“I’m proud of our No. 2 Whelen Chevrolet team for the effort today at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL. We had a car at the beginning of the race that I felt we could win with. We short-pitted and got stuck back in traffic. There were times that I could have gotten wrecked, so I had to let those guys by so we could live to fight another lap. We had to keep our heads down, stay cool, and do everything possible to get the best finish for our team. In the end, I forced so many people, including myself to race in a way that I didn’t want to, but I knew what it was going to take to advance to the Round of 8. I’m never going to be the driver that lets my team down. I’m looking forward to racing for a championship, which is the most important thing. I poured my heart and soul into the ROVAL since Watkins Glen International, and it was shown early in the race. We fought all day. To finish 19th doesn’t show how good we were, but we did what we had to. Thanks to Richard Childress Racing and ECR Engines for bringing a fast Chevrolet today. We have good tracks coming up and I feel like we have a shot at making the Championship 4.” -Jesse Love

Austin Hill and the No. 21 Bennett Transportation & Logistics Chevrolet Team Keep Championship Hopes Alive with Fourth-Place Result at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL

    Finish: 4th
    Start: 6th
    Points: 2nd

“Our Bennett Transportation & Logistics Chevrolet was capable of winning the race, but a few restarts didn’t go our way. We had really good speed and were catching the top four at the end. Just ran out of laps and wasn’t able to get there. Maybe I didn’t get the tires cleaned enough, but on the overtime restart, I slipped the tires too much for the green-white-checkered laps. All in all, it was a solid day for our No. 21 Richard Childress Racing team. We came in here and did what we had to do to advance to the next round. At the beginning of this week, I told our team that all we had to do was run top 10 for the stages and get a solid finish to move on. I definitely want to win on a road course, because I know our program is good enough to do it. But I’ll happily leave the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL with a fourth-place finish.” -Austin Hill

Kaulig Racing Race Recap | Drive for the Cure 250 at Charlotte ROVAL

    AJ ALLMENDINGER
No. 16 Campers Inn RV Chevrolet Camaro

    • AJ Allmendinger qualified third for the Drive for the Cure 250 at the Charlotte ROVAL.
    • Allmendinger took the lead on lap four and maintained the lead for the duration of the stage. Allmendinger remained quiet on the radio and won the first stage by 6.3 seconds over second place. Allmendinger reported his No. 16 Campers Inn RV Chevy was a tick free. The team came to pit to road under the stage break for four tires and fuel.
    • Allmendinger restarted the second stage in 17th place after several cars flipped the stage. Allmendinger gained positions quickly, and by lap 28, when the caution came out, he was in 10th place. On the restart on lap 30, Allmendinger took over ninth place and was scored in fifth when the caution came on lap 31. The team came to pit road under the caution for four tires and fuel and went on to finish the second stage in sixth place.
    • The No. 16 restarted in third place for the final stage. On lap 48, Allmendinger took over second place but reported three laps later that he was loose. When the race’s next caution came out, Allmendinger was scored in third place. He came to pit road for four tires and fuel before restarting in 14th on lap 57. The No. 16, on four fresh tires, moved up to seventh on the restart and took third on lap 59. When the final yellow flag waved, Allmendinger was scored in third, where he restarted for overtime. Battling until the end, Allmendinger went on to finish in second place, advancing to The Round of 8.

“I wanted to win the race. I wanted to go for five in a row, but I didn’t want to take us out of the next round. The Campers Inn RV Chevy was really good that first stage. It just built too loose as the track kind of cooled off there, that was probably our hinderance of actually being faster than the No. 1. Sam did a good job; I feel bad for Parker [Kligerman], he deserved to win. I’m so proud of my group to start off at Kansas the way we did, to fight through Talladega and get to the next round; It’s a big deal.” – AJ Allmendinger

    SHANE van GISBERGEN
    No. 97 WeatherTech Chevrolet Camaro

    • Shane van Gisbergen qualified on the pole for the Drive for the Cure 250 at the Charlotte ROVAL.
    • He led the first three laps of the event before his teammate, AJ Allmendinger, took the lead on lap four in the front chicane. On lap eight, Van Gisbergen missed the back chicane and fell to sixth. He quickly made his way to second by lap 17. Van Gisbergen completed the first stage in second, earning nine stage points.
    • Van Gisbergen reported the car lacked grip and felt weak at the conclusion of Stage 1. He pitted during the stage break for fuel, four fresh tires, and adjustments. Starting the second stage in 22nd, he quickly advanced to 12th by lap seven. A caution came out on lap 28, and Van Gisbergen restarted in 12th. He made gains up to ninth before another caution on lap 31. The field had just returned to speed when another caution followed quickly on lap 35. Taking advantage, the No. 97 WeatherTech team pitted for four tires and fuel, rejoining the race in 17th. Van Gisbergen swiftly moved into the top 10, reaching seventh with three laps remaining in the stage. The second stage ended under caution, with Van Gisbergen finishing seventh, earning four stage points.
    • The No. 97 WeatherTech team started the final stage, 5th, with 24 laps remaining in the race. Van Gisbergen battled to catch the leader and reached second place with 15 laps remaining in the event before a caution flew. The No. 97 team opted to stay out, when the caution flew, giving Van Gisbergen the chance to restart the stage first with 11 laps to go in the race. Van Gisbergen lost the lead with 9 laps remaining, dropping back to fourth where he raced for the remainder of the race. A caution came out seconds before the white flag flew, giving the No. 97 another chance at a restart. Van Gisbergen restarted the official overtime, 4th, with two laps remaining. Van Gisbergen ultimately took the checkered flag, 3rd. Van Gisbergen and the No. 97 WeatherTech team would not advance into the Round of 8, finishing two points below the cut line.

“We had a good crack at it, but just gutted for the whole team. It was a bit of a rollercoaster all race and my WeatherTech Chevrolet was fast. Just wish last weekend would have gone better and we would have been in a better (playoff) spot heading into today. Proud of my Kaulig Racing team. We’ve had an amazing year, my first year in NASCAR and I’ve loved it. I’m happy but also not, I would have loved to keep advancing in the playoffs.” – Shane van Gisbergen

    JOSH WILLIAMS
No. 11 Alloy Employer Services Chevrolet Camaro

    • Josh Williams qualified 23rd for the Drive for the Cure 250 at the Charlotte ROVAL.
    • Williams spent most of the first stage running on the cusp of the top 20. At the end of lap 15, Williams pitted for tires and fuel, flipping the stage and taking the green-white-checkered in 30th.
    • He fired off for the second stage in 11th and immediately was embroiled in battles with cars that had fresher tires. The caution came out on lap 28 while Williams was in 19th. After restarting on lap 30, another caution came out, and Williams restarted in 17th on lap 33. He was involved in a multi-car wreck after the ensuing green-flag lap, ending his day prematurely. He finished in 36th.

“Just a bad day all around, we didn’t get a chance to see where we’d fall with the cautions or pit strategies. Looking forward to moving on to the next one.” – Josh Williams

SMITH SCORES SIXTH STRAIGHT TOP-FIVE, ADVANCES TO ROUND OF 8
Sheldon Creed’s championship hopes are dashed after being involved in a mid-race incident

CONCORD, N.C. (October 12, 2024) – Chandler Smith’s hot streak continued as he led Toyota with a fifth-place run at the Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL in NASCAR Xfinity Series action on Saturday evening. Smith, who previously clinched his spot in the next round, earned his sixth straight top-five finish and eighth-consecutive top-10. Smith led three Joe Gibbs Racing Supras to finish in the top-10 with Josh Bilicki finishing eighth and Aric Almirola in ninth. The Georgia-native will start the Round of 8 as the fourth seed, eight points to the good.

Sheldon Creed, who came into the race 32 points to the good, looked likely to advance early after earning stage points in the first stage, but was involved in a major multi-car incident during the race. The team did the best to repair the damage, but the California-native was unable to continue, ending his quest for the Xfinity Series title.

    TOYOTA QUOTES

CHANDLER SMITH, No. 81 Wheelers Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 5th

Another good run, and you are moving on in the round of 8.

“Yeah, it is a testament to everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing. All of the hard working men and women that has been thrashing to make this No. 81 Wheelers Toyota group back to how we were at the start of the season. We went through a rough patch through the summer. We were hit or miss. We would show up and be really good some weeks, and others we would show up and not be great. Very, very happy with the consistency we have shown. I’m looking forward going into the next round.”

How was your car today and what were your thoughts on the changes?

“I actually liked the changes. I thought it was unique and I thought it made it a little more racy in my opinion, but at the same time, I only raced the old ROVAL once, but honestly, we struggled today. We were at-best a top-five car. We couldn’t run hard and have speed at the start and make it last, so definitely have some work to do here at the ROVAL, but we will go back to the shop and keep building fast Supras and make it better.”

JOSH BILICKI, No. 19 Insurance King Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 8th

What do you take away from this opportunity with Joe Gibbs Racing?

“Yeah, just learning how a powerhouse team like (Joe) Gibbs (Racing) operates, from the prep before the race, throughout the race weekend – it is next level. Honestly, I’m forever grateful. It was super cool to lead some laps – really my first consecutive laps led. That was fun. I think I didn’t do a good job on the start of stage three. We went backwards on an adjustment – and we just lost track position and track position was key. We kind of dug ourselves in a little bit of a hole at the start of stage three, got some track position back those last couple of laps. I’m happy – we were at least able to move forward on that last restart and pick up some positions. Eighth isn’t terrible, but I really wanted a top-five, but thank you to Insurance King, Trim-Tex and AMECO for giving me this opportunity.”

ARIC ALMIROLA, No. 20 Samaritan’s Purse Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 9th

What were your thoughts on the ROVAL?

“Yeah, I didn’t love it. It seemed like it raced a little better than I probably expected, but it is still certainly calamity corner, right? It just invites you to dive bomb it in there. It seemed like for the most part, everyone was pretty respectful, and got through there okay, but it is really, really tough to manage – do you block? Do you not block? It is really inviting to shove it down in there, even when you are two to three car lengths back.”

SHELDON CREED, No. 18 Friends of Jaclyn Foundation Toyota GR Supra, Joe Gibbs Racing

    Finishing Position: 35th

How do you summarize this race as a team?

“Yeah, I guess just not our day, I guess. We were running third, and my transmission locked itself in second gear, so that was weird. First time that has ever happened to me. That was the whole reason that we went to the back. I thought I was going to be okay, when they started crashing. I stopped right at it, and then whoever was behind me, pushed me into it even further. Unfortunate. It sucks that our Playoffs will end this way. My guys deserve a lot more. Everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota deserve it. I guess, I don’t know – I will just go grab a beer and watch it unfold.”

    What happened out there?

“I had to go to the back. My transmission locked itself into second gear, and then the 5 (Anthony Alfredo) and the 98 (Riley Herbst) just ran into each other and caused a crash. They started stacking up. I stopped right at the crash, and whoever was behind me just piled me into it even further, and I think that is what broke the radiator. I don’t know what to do. It was out of our control there.”

    How tough is this?

“It’s out of my control. It’s obviously very frustrating if we don’t get to move on this way. I don’t know.”

COLE CUSTER, No. 00 Andy’s Frozen Custard Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Finished 13th | Advanced to Round of 8)

“That definitely was not pretty, whatsoever. We did a great job the first two races getting ourselves where we needed to in the points. All year we put ourselves where we needed to in the points and it ended up where we didn’t need our best day today. I am definitely frustrated. I felt like road courses were our strong suit last year and we are really struggling with them this year. I am a little confused. We have some good tracks for us coming up, so we are looking forward to those.”

UNFORTUNATELY, YOUR TEAMMATE, RILEY HERBST DOES NOT ADVANCE:

“I just hate it for Riley and that whole 98 team. They definitely deserved to be in the next round on speed throughout the year. I don’t know. I haven’t seen the replay of it, but I feel real bad for them because I definitely feel like they were good enough to advance on.”

RILEY HERBST, No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang Dark Horse (Finished 32nd | Eliminated from Playoffs)

“It wasn’t what we wanted. It sucks. This race was frustrating for me. The Roval has never been a good track for me, but I thought we would be okay to advance if we just survived. Neither myself nor the 5 were giving up in the chicane and it took me out ultimately. We probably would’ve been fine if it wasn’t for that. Still, we struggled with the handling of our car all day so it wasn’t perfect. We almost stayed in it until the end, but it just wasn’t enough. There’s still four races left to try and get a win though with this 98 team.”

Leland Honeyman Jr. NASCAR Xfinity Career Stats: Entering the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course, Honeyman has 36 career NASCAR Xfinity Series races to his credit, earning a career-best fourth-place finish at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway after starting 33rd in the Ag-Pro 300 for Young’s Motorsports in April 2024.

Since 2023, he has carried an average finish of 22.7.

Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway | United Rentals 250 Race Recap: In the 28th race of the 2024 Xfinity Series season, Young’s Motorsports and Honeyman searched for another solid finish in the team’s Xfinity Series return trip to the breathtaking Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway in Talladega, Ala.

After qualifying his No. 42 Mezrano Injury Lawyers Chevrolet Camaro 19th, Honeyman did a masterful job staying out of trouble throughout the race and even avoided a major multi-car accident with three laps remaining.

The late race caution threw the race into overtime with Honeyman inside the top-10 in his Young’s Motorsports entry. Looking to duplicate or better his fourth-place run at the 2.66-mile superspeedway in NASCAR overtime,

Honeyman was in contention for his first NASCAR Xfinity Series win until he was booted from the lead pack in heavy drafting conditions, relinquishing the team to a 14th-place finish at the checkered flag.

Calling the Shots: Guiding Honeyman Jr. as crew chief of the No. 42 Young’s Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro is longtime crew chief Andrew Abbott.

On Saturday, he will be crew chief in his 126th NASCAR Xfinity Series race. In his previous 125 races, he has four top-five and 13 top-10 finishes.

The season’s 29th race will be his fourth tango at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course as crew chief in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Young’s Motorsports’ NASCAR Xfinity Series History: Since entering the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2024, the family-owned organization has logged 28 starts and maintains an average starting position of 27.3 and an average finish of 21.9.

“Charlotte is such an instrumental race with a lot of friends and family in attendance. Following a strong performance at Talladega Superspeedway last weekend, the vibe is good and we’re focused on keeping ourselves in the hunt for 67 laps on Saturday.

The former ARCA Menards Series West winner returned to NASCAR Xfinity Series competition for the first time since Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway last year on Oct. 5, 2024, at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway.

Driving the No. 15 Sentinel Foundation | Nine Line Apparel Ford Mustang for AM Racing, Lupton contended for a top-10 finish before being collected in the “Big One” with three laps to go.

To jumpstart his stock car racing career this year, Lupton returned to the ARCA Menards Series at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International in mid-September when he piloted the No. 30 Lupton Excavation | Rette Jones Racing Ford Mustang to a top-10 finish in the General Tire 100 at The Glen.

The Californian has spent most of 2024 competing in select Late-Model events on the West Coast and in a limited Trans Am Series XGT Class schedule.

In addition to his Xfinity Series starts, he has achieved four NASCAR Cup Series starts and 15 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN® Truck Series starts to his credit.

Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway | United Rentals 250 Race Recap: The 28th race of the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series season kicked off in a return trip to Talladega Superspeedway in Talladega, Alabama, on Saturday, October 5, 2024.

Without the benefit of practice, Lupton qualified his No. 15 Sentinel Foundation | Nine Line Apparel Ford Mustang 36th, but quickly from the drop of the green flag, the Wilton, Calif. native navigated through the field and found himself inside the top 20 for most of the race.

In Stage 3, Lupton pressed the attack, drafted his No. 15 AM Racing Ford Mustang inside the top-10, and contended for the team’s best finish of the 2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series until he was collected in a massive “Big One.”

The accident damaged Lupton’s race car on the right side. The team patched up his blue oval, allowing the 30-year-old to return to the race and finish a respectable 24th at the checkered flag.

From the Pit Box: Industry veteran Ryan “Pickle” London is Dylan Lupton’s crew chief.

He will be crew chief for his 29th NASCAR Xfinity Series race and his first on the Queen City road course.

On The Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course: “I’m hoping for another strong effort from our AM Racing team on Saturday. It’s a bummer that we did not get the finish we deserved at Talladega because we showcased a lot of speed, but we’ll have an opportunity to rebound on Saturday at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course.

“It’s an updated layout, so I feel like it will put me on a level playing field with the rest of the field as we utilize practice to get used to the new configuration and set you up for qualifying and race day.

    Cole Custer Notes of Interest

    • Cole Custer enters Saturday’s Drive for the Cure 250 on the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway Roval with high hopes as he sits second in the points standings and third in the playoffs standings as the series heads to the Round of 12 finale. After the first two playoff races, Custer sits 37 points above the Round of 8 cutline due largely to his solid second-place finish Sept. 28 at Kansas Speedway in Kansas City. Last week on the Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway oval, Custer drove to a 27th-place finish that normally would not bode well for his championship hopes, but he banked 13 valuable playoff points by virtue of his two race wins and three stage wins, as well as a 15-point bonus for winning the regular-season championship. Custer arrives at Charlotte tied for second in the standings with Austin Hill, 27 points behind leader Chandler Smith. Barring a disastrous result Saturday, Custer is in position to advance to the Round of 8 on points. A win would to lock him into the next round and earn an additional five playoff points. Custer has made the playoffs in all five of his fulltime Xfinity Series seasons, advancing to the Championship 4 in all but his rookie season in 2017, when he missed it by one position. As he eyes back-to-back championships, Custer knows that if he can make it out of the Round of 12, the team will hit its sweet spot of racetrack combinations in the Round of 8 – Oct. 19 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Oct. 26 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, and Nov. 2 at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.
    • The Drive for the Cure 250 marks Custer’s fourth Xfinity Series start at the road course that incorporates portions of the Charlotte Motor Speedway oval. He made his first start in the inaugural Roval race in September 2018, when he finished seventh and led five laps. He followed that with an eighth-place finish in September 2019 after starting sixth. In last year’s race, Custer looked to be on his way to another road-course victory in the final laps when Sam Mayer passed him for the lead. Custer emerged with his best Roval finish of second. This weekend, he’s looking for redemption. Custer has an additional three starts outside of the Xfinity Series on the Roval, all coming in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2020 to 2022 with a best finish of ninth in October 2020.
    • Custer has excelled on road courses since his return to the Xfinity Series at the start of the 2023 season, finishing in the top-10 in every race but four when turning right and left. In nine road-course and two street-course starts since 2023, Custer has earned two victories and nine top-10s. Custer’s history on road courses suggests he’s a silent road-course ringer. He followed up his June 2023 victory at Portland (Ore.) International Raceway with another win in the inaugural Chicago Street Race in July 2023. Custer has finished in the top-10 in 20 of his 24 career road-course outings. This past March 24, he finished fourth on the 3.426-mile, 20-turn Circuit of the Americas (COTA) layout in Austin, Texas. He followed that up with a sixth-place finish June 1 at Portland and a ninth-place result June 8 at Sonoma (Calif.) Raceway.
    • Custer will sport the bright and vibrant colors of Andy’s Frozen Custard once again this weekend in the company’s third and final race as primary partner in 2024. Founded in 1986 in Osage Beach, Missouri, by Andy Kuntz’s parents John and Carol Kuntz, Andy’s Frozen Custard has been providing the freshest frozen custard in the business for 38 years, giving ice cream the “cold shoulder” by scooping, mixing and presenting handcrafted frozen custard treats with speed and a smile. Since the beginning, the family members have had one dream: to share what makes them happiest with everyone else, and to warm hearts one scoop of frozen custard at a time. With a focus on product quality, customer service and community involvement, Andy’s has grown into the nation’s largest frozen custard-only business, with 150 stores across 15 states proudly serving the World’s Finest Frozen Custard. Andy’s has been committed to supporting developing drivers of all ages from their first race throughout their racing career for more than 30 years, an extension of the family’s lifelong commitment to motorsports. Andy’s is the “Official Frozen Treat” of Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, where fans can enjoy Andy’s on-site through branded kiosks, treat trucks and in suites.

    Riley Herbst Notes of Interest

    • Riley Herbst heads to the final race of the Round of 12 of the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs focused on making it to the Round of 8 for the first time in his young career. The driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang Dark Horse enters Saturday’s Drive for the Cure 250 on the Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway Roval seventh in the playoff standings, 20 points above the top-eight cutline. While he has been open about expecting to struggle in the first round, Herbst knows that if he can make it to the Round of 8, he’ll have a good shot at fighting for a spot in the Championship 4. The Round of 8 includes the intermediate tracks of Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway, plus the short track of Martinsville (Va.) Speedway – all of which Herbst has excelled at in his career. The three tracks could be considered Stewart-Haas Racing’s “bread and butter” as the team owns wins at two of the three tracks in the Xfinity Series. Herbst finished the best of the Stewart-Haas Xfinity Series Ford Mustangs in all three races of the Round of 8 last season with his win Oct. 14 at Las Vegas, runner-up finish Oct. 21 at Homestead-Miami, and fourth-place result Oct. 28 at Martinsville. He scored more points than any driver in the Round of 8 and, had he been in the playoffs, he would’ve advanced to the Championship 4. Herbst hopes to repeat that feat this year and officially make the field for the championship race. First, he has to survive and advance Saturday on the Roval.
    • The Las Vegas native looked to be on his way to his second win of the 2024 season last Saturday at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway. He started sixth and quickly found himself in the front of the field. He finished the first stage just outside the top-10 and sixth in the second stage. In total, Herbst led six times for a total of 22 laps throughout the day. With no drafting help at the end of the race, Herbst was forced to settle for a third-place finish, his second straight top-three at Talladega after his runner-up finish in April. While he wasn’t able to capture the win, he was able to secure a solid points day for the No. 98 team in the championship battle.
    • The Drive for the Cure 250 will be Herbst’s fifth career Xfinity Series start on the Charlotte Roval. Herbst had a strong outing in his first start there in 2020 during a torrential downpour. He ran up front and led seven laps en route to a 12th-place finish, best among that year’s rookie class. In October 2021, Herbst started ninth and was holding his position in the top-10 during the final stage before a suspension issue ended his race seven laps from the finish. In 2022, Herbst started 11th and led a lap before an accident ended his bid five laps from the finish. His best finish of fourth was earned last October in his first of five straight top-five finishes to end the 2023 season after narrowly missing the playoff field.
    • Herbst is driving for a team that knows how to win on the Roval. SHR’s No. 98 team won the inaugural Xfinity Series race there in Sept. 2018 with driver Chase Briscoe. It was Briscoe’s first career Xfinity Series victory. He led twice for 33 laps to beat Justin Marks by 1.478 seconds.

Cole Custer, Driver of the No. 00 Andy’s Frozen Custard Ford Mustang Dark Horse

Talladega didn’t quite go how you would’ve liked, but you’re still in a good spot to make the Round of 8, 37 points above the top-eight cutline. How are you approaching this weekend knowing that you’ll still have to continue watching the points situation?

“Talladega was just rough. There wasn’t anything we could do to avoid that wreck and it just killed our day, unfortunately. Still, I’m confident going into this weekend. We’re 37 points to the good of the cutline and should be in a good spot if we can just finish the race. After finishing second last year, I think we’ll have a chance to go for the win, too. We’ve had fast cars on road courses, but it’s always hard when you have guys like Shane Van Gisbergen and AJ Allmendinger in the field. They’re the ones you have to beat to win on this style of track. I think we’ll be in contention, though, and find ourselves in the Round of 8 once again.”

You’ve had solid runs on the Charlotte Roval in your previous starts there, earning back-to-back top-10s in 2018 and 2019, plus the runner-up finish last year. Do you feel like this is a solid track for you and the team, and what are your thoughts heading into the weekend?

“I think the Roval has been a good track for us throughout my career at Stewart-Haas Racing, and you even saw that in my return to the series last year. Road courses in general have been strong for us and we’ve been silent contenders almost every race. Our road-course cars have been really good this year, even if we haven’t always gotten the results. We scored two victories on road courses last season, but I have a good history at them, in general. Hopefully, we can continue to keep that up and secure our spot in the Round of 8 this Saturday. I think the Roval will be a good race for us even with some solid road-course aces in the field. We’ve always been able to compete with them and I think we’ll be able to do that again. We just need to have a fast car and not make mistakes to keep ourselves in the game at the end to easily advance.”

Riley Herbst, Driver of the No. 98 Monster Energy Ford Mustang Dark Horse

Saturday’s race marks the last race of the Round of 12 of the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs. Currently, you’re 20 points above the top-eight cutline in seventh. With the Roval being labeled a wild card, what’s your thought process heading into the weekend?

“I mean, 20 points to the good is better than being below the cutline. It puts us in a better position than we’ve been in during the past when heading into this race. I have yet to advance out of the Round of 12 in my career, so that’s ultimately the goal this weekend. We have to be smart and not put ourselves in bad situations, but we also have to be aware of that points battle. The No. 98 Monster Energy team had a good run there last year and finished fourth, but the Roval has been a track that I’ve struggled at. I don’t really enjoy it, so if we can make it out of this clean and into the Round of 8, that’ll be a good day for us. Obviously, there’s the unknown of the new turn seven, but we have a 50-minute practice session on Saturday morning to hopefully figure it out.”

The Charlotte Roval has been a difficult track for you in the past, but you’ve also never been in this situation where you have a 20-point cushion going into a playoff cutoff race. How are you approaching this weekend?

“To be honest, this is one track that I haven’t been able to wrap my head around. I don’t enjoy it as a driver, but every driver has tracks like that. It’s not that we haven’t run decent there in the past, but I think I was just at a disadvantage because I never had a full practice session on this track. Road courses have always been a struggle for me, but then you take an oval and make it into a road course, and it just isn’t my strength. The first two years at SHR, we had such bad luck there and didn’t finish either race. Then last year, we didn’t have the pressure of the playoffs and we finished fourth. We’re trying to keep that same mindset we had last year, but there’s still a playoff battle. None of us are sure about what to think about this new configuration, but at least we’re all in the same boat there. Hopefully, we can have another strong weekend as a team and have both us and the No. 00 team advance to the Round of 8.”

It takes some of the pressure off going into the Roval, as it’s not a must-win situation, but we know the points are still just as important and we’re going to continue to fight to get Pilot Flying J in Victory Lane and score maximum points before the Round of 8 begins.”

“The Roval is such a unique track and unlike anything I’ve ever raced. It’s a pretty cool track, with the blind crest and hairpin spot and it’s going to be a challenge for me. We don’t really run on tracks with big curbs, so it’s going to be interesting to feel the curbs and learn how much I can take and use and how to pass. “I tested on this track before I drove Chicago last year and have been practicing on the SIM recently. It’s going to be a big challenge, as it’s not like anything I’ve ever driven before. The track is a hybrid, not really a road course, and the cars are compromised to run on the oval as well. Going to be a fun weekend, but also going to be tough. We are on the other side of the playoff cut line than we want to be on, so just want to be up there at the front and get as many points as possible, which should hopefully put us in a good position for an awesome result in my WeatherTech Chevy.” – Shane van Gisbergen on Charlotte ROVAL
