Venturini Motorsports files lawsuit against Frank Kimmel, alleging theft of team secrets

Venturini Motorsports, a championship-winning organization in the ARCA Menards Series, has filed a lawsuit against two former employees, one of whom was former Crew Chief Frank Kimmel.

The lawsuit alleges that Kimmel, a 10-time series champion during his driving career, engaged in a scheme with fellow defendant Griffin Rider to steal the team’s secrets before their departure from the team.

“Just before terminating their employment with VMS, both defendants engaged in a scheme designed to steal VMS’ most sensitive intellectual property,” alleges the complaint.

The complaint goes on to state that Kimmel is accused of taking pictures of suspension components and setups developed by VMS “through wind tunnel and pull down machine testing for aerodynamic and handling advantages.”

Kimmel was ordered by a judge on Friday to return any and all documents and photographs he may have taken to VMS by Monday, and he is also required to submit his phone for forensic analysis.

Kimmel left VMS last month to serve as General Manager for KBR Development, a direct competitor of VMS in the ARCA Menards Series. VMS has asked the court to enter a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction and is seeking to recover damages in excess of $25,000.

Josh Williams Motorsports seeks driver with sponsorship for Lucas Oil 200

It has been two years since Josh Williams has fielded an ARCA car for a race. The last time his own team competed on the ARCA circuit was in April of 2018 at Talladega Superspeedway, where Williams started 12th and finished sixth.

Recently the Port Charlotte, Florida native brought his team to the annual ARCA test session at Daytona with Ryan Vargas who piloted the No. 60 Chevrolet at the test and led the team to finish 11th on Saturday.

The test went so well that the team hopes to have a funded driver for the season opener at Daytona next month on Saturday February 8th. Co-Owner Kevin Williams says the test went better than expected.

“The test was successful, real successful,” said Kevin Williams, co-owner of JWM. “It’s been a while since JWM has participated in an ARCA Menards Series test session at Daytona, but we came to the test and had speed and our drivers did exceptionally well, including Ryan. Quietly we’ve been working hard behind the scenes at JWM to not only prepare to compete at Daytona but other races on the schedule in 2020.”

Despite the season opener quickly approaching, the team still does not have a driver but hopes to have one in time before the week of the race. Even though the team has hopes to race at Daytona, they aren’t expecting to run the full ARCA schedule this late in the off-season. However, they have cars ready for any of the upcoming races on the ARCA schedule.

Team Owner Josh Williams gives more explanation about the situation.

“We’re not looking to run a full schedule at this point, but the races that we’re able to field an ARCA car – we’re focused on going to the track with a ton of leadership, a confident group and fast race cars. We have opportunities this year for funded drivers on a variety on levels, including single-race and multi-race options and hope to make some announcements in the near future.”

The team says if any driver has the funding or is interested to compete at Daytona, they are advised to contact Josh Williams Motorsports at 941-628-9362.

Williams had a breakout year in the ARCA Menards Series in 2016, having two wins, five top fives and 11 top-10 finishes. The year prior, he had six top fives and 15 top-10 finishes in the ARCA Series.

  • Dominique Van Wieringen tops final test session in preparation for ARCA Lucas Oil 200

Dominique Van Wieringen tops final test session in preparation for ARCA Lucas Oil 200

When you hear the name Dominique Van Wieringen, you normally associate her with what was formerly named the NASCAR K&N Pro Series. Van Wieringen has made 15 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East starts with four top-fives and six top-10 finishes, along with one NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series start.

She made her ARCA debut this weekend by competing in the two-day test session ahead of the Lucas Oil 200.

The Ontario native placed quickest on the last day of testing with a time of 49.615 seconds with a speed of 181.397 mph. Van Wieringen, competing in the No. 30 Rette Jones entry, was surprised to find that she was at the top of the charts at the end of the day.

“I was really surprised when Mark (Rette) said we went to the top of the charts,” Van Wieringen said. “I was practicing trying to time the draft for qualifying and I didn’t get it times just right. Hopefully, when we come back for the race I can time it out a little better in qualifying and get even more.”

It was the first time the Rette Jones driver completed any laps at the iconic Daytona International Speedway. Despite the history surrounding the place and the legendary names that have won and competed at the speedway, Van Wieringen says she was calm.

“It’s been a good experience. It’s really intimidating because you go really fast and when things go wrong they go wrong really fast. For the first time out, it was better than I thought it would be. It was actually really relaxing. I don’t know how to explain it, it was just really relaxing.”

Testing out his experience in the stock car world was a usual name in the World of Outlaws, David Gravel. Gravel was second in the No. 28 KBR Development Chevy with a time of 49.659 seconds at 181.236 mph. The Sprint Car driver is supposed to make select starts in the Truck Series and will compete in the ARCA season opener.

Rounding out the top five in the final test session was Sean Corr with the Empire Racing Group, ARCA Menards Series Championship runner-up Michael Self and Drew Dollar, along with Ryan Repko as Venturini Motorsports makes its name heard once again in the ARCA world.

  • ARCA season finale sees rating increase

ARCA season finale sees rating increase

Looking back almost one-week removed from the ARCA Menards Championship season finale, we saw a ratings increase during the exciting finale from Kansas Speedway last Friday night. The event featured a battle between two Venturini Motorsports teammates, Michael Self and Christian Eckes.

With the ARCA race precluded by the postponed Major League Baseball ALCS Game 5, an immediate replay was shown on Fox Sports 1 shortly after. There were 420,000 fans who watched the ARCA Menards Series Championship battle Friday night. There was also a live stream set up on nascar.com that saw roughly 13,600 fans who tuned in and watched it live on the internet.

With that in mind, at least 19,000 plus also saw the last few laps of the race on Twitter.

“What a great way to close out our 2019 season,” said Mark Gundrum, ARCA vice president of corporate partnerships. “Mother Nature threw MLB a curveball and everyone at FOX Sports and NASCAR did what they could to hit it out of the park. We had a great championship battle decided in an exciting race that went down to the wire.

“Our partners at FOX Sports did a great job throughout their part of the 2019 broadcast schedule and we look forward to kicking off 2020 with them at Daytona next February.”

While the 2019 season was an exciting season for the ARCA Menards Series, series officials are already looking ahead to 2020. The season opener will once again begin at Daytona International Speedway in just a few months in February. With the new schedule announced a few weeks back, the new TV schedule has yet to be announced but should be coming within the next few weeks. As expected, NBC Sports will carry the ARCA Menards East and West Series.

  • Christian Eckes dominates to win the race and ARCA championship at Kansas

Christian Eckes dominates to win the race and ARCA championship at Kansas

It was a dominating race by the Venturini Motorsports team at Kansas Speedway and a battle between two championship contenders, Michael Self and Christian Eckes, that was decided by one position on the race track. Even an engine change would not stop Eckes from winning. The New York native took the lead on Lap 58, never looked back and went on to win the race and the ARCA Menards Series championship.

“The day didn’t go smoothly at all,” Eckes said. “We had an engine problem in qualifying and the guys had to change it an hour before the race. We started at the back and we were in the top 10 in five laps. The car was on a rail all night.”

When the Kansas 150 started, it was all Michael Self who was trying to hunt down Eckes for the championship as Eckes held the championship by 15 points. In the first half of the race, Self had the dominating car and it was his race to lose at that point.

There were only two cautions in the season finale. On Lap 39 the first caution flew for the No. 4 of Drew Dollar who was in the wall off Turn 4. During the first caution a round of pit stops was seen and a couple of drivers had issues. The No. 54 of Tanner Gray overshot his pit box and the No. 55 of Hailie Deegan was too fast entering pit road. The second yellow flew on Lap 52 for Tim Richmond in the No. 06 after he spun off Turn 2.

The Lap 52 caution was a pivotal moment in the race. After Self dominated the first half, it was Eckes turn to take the lead. And so he did. Eckes took the lead on Lap 58 and from there the Middletown, New York native held on and went on to win the championship and race.

It was Eckes’ first ARCA Menards Series championship of his career at age 18 and his fourth win of the season.

“It’s huge,” Eckes added, saying that winning the championship helped his confidence immensely. “It hasn’t been the smoothest of years but the fact we were able to win really boosted my confidence. We came back from missing a race and came back today from qualifying in the back. I can’t stress this enough of how good this team is coming back from these situations and we proved that today. I told them in the race, we can’t have what happened in qualifying define us. Everybody did a great job and that’s why we’re in victory lane.”

Self, Eckes’ teammate, finished second in the race.

“Second sucks,” Self said after visiting Eckes in victory lane. “I am thankful to have the opportunity to come and race for a championship. We won four times but we had a lot of ups and downs. I wish it would have turned out differently but I am really happy for Christian and the Venturini team. I just wish it played out in our favor tonight.”

Only one lead change took place between only two drivers. Two cautions slowed the pace for 12 laps. Eckes won the ARCA Menards Series championship by 25 points over Self.

  • ARCA Menards Series Preview-Kansas

    ARCA Menards Series Preview-Kansas

After 19 races of ARCA Menards Series action, the season is coming to a close Friday night in the heartland at Kansas Speedway where a champion will be crowned. It will be decided between two Venturini Motorsports drivers, Christian Eckes or Michael Self.

While a champion will be crowned, there will also be a race winner who will go to victory lane. Although some say to win the championship, you must win the race.

That goes for Michael Self and his No. 25 Sinclair Venturini team. Self spent most of the summer leading the ARCA standings, racking up race wins and building a sizable lead over his teammate, Christian Eckes. In fact, at this point, Self believes he will have to finish ahead of Eckes or perhaps grab a win in Friday’s night race.

“We have to be ahead of Christian if we are going to win the championship,” he said. “Nothing that happened prior to this race really matters. It’s all about what happens in this race. We’re going to do what we’ve done all season long and go out and try to win. I like the style of racing on the big tracks. We won earlier in the season at Michigan and had really good cars at Charlotte and Chicago. If we do that, we’ll have done all we can and we’ll see how it shakes out.”

And it could go Self’s way. He has one win in three starts while his other two starts are both top-five finishes.

“Kansas is one of my favorite tracks, and knowing that we’re going in without having to be conservative or playing it safe at all kind of eases my mind. We can take risks and gamble this weekend and not have to worry about the outcome and if that’s what it comes down to then we’ll see if we can make it pan out.”

His teammate Eckes spent most of the year catching Self in points. The points gap increased when he became ill and missed a race at Salem in April. However, after the Talladega crash, Eckes has had solid results by finishing in the top five or winning the race. After Lucas Oil Raceway, Eckes is ahead by 15 points and is looking for his first ARCA championship.

“It’s all one race at a time for us,” Eckes said. “We don’t get nervous because the point situation has gotten closer. We knew we could run this good when the season started. We had some mediocre runs in the middle of the season but we got past those and we’ve been in the top two the last six races. That’s exactly how we felt we should be all season long.”

It will be a little tricky for the New York native who will be making his first Kansas start Friday night. Practice time will come in handy and Eckes knows it’s all about taking it race by race and not get caught up looking ahead.

“We have to go to Kansas and race for it. It’s going to be tough,” Eckes said. “Michael is really good at the mile and a half tracks. We’re looking forward to it. It feels good to be in the position we are now. We really haven’t had the pressure on us all year so it’s definitely a change of pace. At the end of the day, we just need to go do what we do and be perfect at Kansas to finish the job.”

While two drivers in the Venturini Motorsports stable will be going for the championship, two other drivers will be going for the race win. One of them is Harrison Burton, who opened up the season with a victory back in February at Daytona. Now, Burton comes to Kansas and hopes to end the season with another victory.

“It’s a great feeling being a part of the success of this Venturini Motorsports team this year,” said Burton. “But it’s not over yet. We still have some unfinished business to take care of at Kansas. Nothing would be better than ending the season on a high note like the way we started it. I love running on these big tracks and know my RUUD team will be ready to answer the call.”

Burton has one start at Kansas in the Truck Series where he started third and finished 10th.

The other driver on the Venturini Motorsports team hoping to go for a win Friday night is popular driver Hailie Deegan. Like Eckes, Deegan will be making her first start at Kansas Friday night. Kansas will also mark her first start at a 1.5-mile track.

“I’m excited,” says the Temecula, California native. “I’ve never raced on a mile-and-a-half track before so I think it’s going to take a little bit getting used to especially since I’m not testing. Hopefully, I’ll pick up on it quick, do some simulator work and hopefully have another strong finish. It’s been a great season and I’ve learned a lot. Really looking forward to this next race.”

Deegan recently scored her career-best finish in the ARCA Menards Series with a finish of fifth at Lucas Oil Raceway.

Hoping to end the year strong are the Chad Bryant Racing drivers, Joe Graf Jr. and Ty Majeski.

Majeski returned to the ARCA Menards Series scene this season driving the No. 22 Ford. He’s been quite successful in doing so. The Seymour, Wisconsin native has notched three wins in five starts. However, Majeski’s last start was at Chicago back in July and that ended in victory lane. He also recently participated in a test at Kansas Speedway as well.

“The test went well,” said Majeski who has earned five top-five finishes in 2019. “We ran through a couple of different packages and made some changes that we would not have been able to do on race weekend. Overall, I think we are happy with the speed and the feel our No. 22 Chad Bryant Racing Ford had and hope we can capitalize on that during Friday night’s race.”

Majeski’s comeback has been dominant by having a 1.8 average finishing position in his five starts total.

“We’ve had a fantastic handful of races thus far,” offered Majeski who will make his 15th career ARCA start on Friday night. “Winning at Charlotte in the heart of racing and then at Chicagoland which is so close to where I grew up definitely are the highlights of the season for me. I said at the beginning of the season I really wanted to win those two races. And we’ve been able to accomplish that and so much more. I’m really thankful to everyone who has made it possible.”

Joe Graf Jr. hopes to follow in Majeski’s footsteps Friday night. The Chad Bryant Racing driver also hopes to put the bad luck behind him after what happened last time out at Lucas Oil Raceway a couple of weeks ago.

Lucas Oil was tough to swallow,” said Graf Jr. who is all but assured of fifth in the final ARCA championship standings this season. “We had a great car, a fast car and we were letting the advantage of having tires be our ticket. Unfortunately, things quickly changed, and we were left with another top-10 finish instead of a likely win.

“We can’t dwell on what happened in the past though, we have to focus out the windshield and we’ll go to Kansas Speedway this week and give it our best.”

Like his teammate, Graf Jr. also participated in the test as well.

The test went pretty good,” added Graf Jr. “I don’t think any driver or team leaves a test completely satisfied and I think that spoke well for us. We were pleased with the progress we made during the day but knew we still had some work to do. The guys have been busting their tails getting our car ready for the race on Friday night and I’m looking forward to the chance to contend for our 13th top-10 finish of the year.”

Graf Jr. competed in last year’s race, where he started 14th but did not finish due to a crash that took him out early and resulted in a 21st place finish.

One team that is bringing back a driver who was very successful in their program is Win-Tron Racing with Gus Dean. Dean has run a limited schedule this year and has three starts with a best finish of third his last time out at Charlotte. Since then, Dean has been busy with the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series. The team looks for success Friday night.

“I’m really looking forward to this opportunity to run the ARCA race with Win-Tron Racing,” said Dean. “Kevin (Cywinski) and my crew chief Jamie (Jones) have been an instrumental part of my racing career as I’ve progressed and anytime we get the chance to compete in a race together, we have one goal in mind, winning.”

Dean has three starts with no wins but he very much still likes visiting Kansas Speedway.

“Kansas Speedway is such a fast race track, but I enjoy racing there,” added Dean. “We had a super competitive car last October but unfortunately didn’t get the finish we deserved. We’re bringing the same car we raced at Charlotte in May and it was fast. I think we have a good opportunity to put ourselves in a position to win the race on Friday night and end the ARCA year on a high note.”

While Kansas could certainly create an opportunity for a new winner, you can guarantee Bret Holmes and his No. 23 family owned team will take advantage if the opportunity is there to strike. In 2019, he’s amassed seven top fives and 17 top-10’s. However, Holmes had hoped to have at least a couple of wins by now.

“We were expecting a couple of wins this season,” he said. “We are going into Kansas with that mindset. We tested there last week. We expected a little more but things don’t always work out. That’s just part of being with a new team. Those two guys in front of us have been with the same team for the last couple of years so they’ve had an advantage because they’ve had that same feel in their cars. There’s been a big difference and feel in the cars has been so different than anything I’ve had previously. We had a good test and I am feeling really good about our chances to go and get our first win to close out the season.”

With those drivers hoping to compete for wins, there are other drivers that hope to end on a high note. Those are Riley Herbst, Travis Braden, Sheldon Creed, Tanner Gray, Drew Dollar, Tommy Vigh Jr., Eric Caudell, Ed Pompa, Brad Smith, Scott Melton, Carson Ware, Dick Doheny and Con Nicolopoulos.

Since 2001, Kansas Speedway has seen 18 ARCA Menards Series races. Those winners include a list of names such as Jason Jarrett, Frank Kimmel, Shelby Howard, Ryan Hemphill, Chad Blount, Scott Lagasse Jr., Scott Speed, Parker Kligerman, Ty Dillon, Alex Bowman, Spencer Gallagher, Mason Mitchell, Chase Briscoe, Michael Self and Sheldon Creed.

Frank Kimmel has the most track wins with three followed by Alex Bowman in second with two wins. Everyone else has one win each on the list. There is the potential that there could be a two time winner on Friday night with Self and Creed back in the field.

Chevrolet has the most manufacturer wins here with six (2001, 2005, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2017). Dodge and Toyota have four wins each while Ford has three wins.

The race winner has come from the pole four times (2002, 2004, 2012, 2016). The lowest a race winner has ever come from to win was 32nd set by Gallagher in 2014.

Christian Eckes leads Michael Self by 15 points in the standings.

Friday is an all day show for ARCA drivers with the only practice at 1 p.m. ET. General Tire Pole Qualifying is slated for 6 p.m. ET with no live TV coverage. However, fans can follow along at arcaracing.com.

The ARCA Kansas 150 is scheduled to get underway shortly after 8:30 p.m. ET. The race can be seen live on Fox Sports 2 with a replay set on Fox Sports 1 at 12:30 a.m. ET Saturday morning.

  • Chandler Smith makes late race pass to win rain-shortened race at Lucas Oil Raceway

Chandler Smith makes late race pass to win rain-shortened race at Lucas Oil Raceway

With a late-race pass for the lead, rookie sensation Chandler Smith took home the ARCA Menards Series win at Lucas Oil Raceway after the rain started falling on Lap 162. The field made a few more pace laps before coming down pit road on Lap 168. After waiting a few more moments, ARCA Menards Series officials had no other choice than to call the race early, giving Smith the win.

“It was meant to be,” Smith said as he celebrated in victory lane. “We couldn’t have timed that pass out any better than we did.”

It wasn’t all about Chandler Smith though. Another rookie, Ty Gibbs, was back for his 11th and final race of the season. It was also a day past Gibbs 17th birthday and he sat the No. 18 Monster Energy Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota on the pole for the second time in his ARCA career.

With showers in the area, the race was moved up prior to its original starting time in hopes of beating the rain to complete the 200 lap race.

As soon as the race began, Gibbs took off and was the dominant car early on. In fact, he led every lap and held the lead despite a few cautions that slowed the pace until Gibbs became the caution. On Lap 142, the No. 77 of Joe Graf Jr. made contact with Ty Gibbs, sending him up the wall and ending his night early.

“I don’t even know who that guy is or what happened out there,” Gibbs said. “We had a really great car. I am pretty bummed. Most of all I am sorry for my guys, the deserved a win here tonight.”

When the race went back green on Lap 151, Christian Eckes, who is chasing the championship, made a dive bomb move to take the lead. Eckes led until Lap 159, where his other teammate Smith got side-by-side with him and took the lead. Just as Smith took the lead, the sky started to open up with rain sprinkles falling from the sky.

The yellow eventually came out due to rain on Lap 162. Just a few laps later, the cars came down pit road to sit under a red flag before officials called the race early due to heavy rains, leaving Chandler Smith to earn his fifth win of the 2019 season.

The race was slowed four times to yellow. The first caution flew on Lap 53 for the No. 5 of Bobby Gerhart, who went spinning around on the backstretch. The second caution came out on Lap 98 for the No. 11 of Dick Doheny who crashed in Turn 2. A third caution came on Lap 145 for the Ty Gibbs and Joe Graf Jr. accident. The final caution was seen on Lap 162 for rain before the race was called.

By finishing second, Eckes wound up winning the Short Track Championship and is heading to the season finale at Kansas with a 20 plus point lead advantage over his teammate Michael Self.

“We’re obviously disappointed with second,” Eckes said, “but it’s our sixth top-two finish in a row. We really have things turned around after a tough stretch in the summer. We’d have liked to have had that caution for rain a few laps earlier though.”

There were four cautions for 25 laps and three lead changes among four drivers.

ARCA Menards Series Preview- Lucas Oil Raceway

With just two races remaining, the ARCA Menards Series drivers are back on track this weekend for race No. 19 of the 2019 season at Lucas Oil Raceway. After this weekend, there is just be one race left to decide the 2019 ARCA Menards Series champion.

At this point, it will be decided between the two Venturini Motorsports drivers, Christian Eckes and Michael Self. This weekend, the two drivers and the other series drivers look to tackle the famous short track in Indianapolis.

Speaking of Venturini Motorsports, they have been the team to beat all season long winning most of the races, leaving everyone in the dust, and they plan to do the same again on Saturday night. The Venturini’s will bring four cars to the track driven by Self, Eckes, Hailie Deegan and Chandler Smith.

Beginning with the series championship points leader Michael Self, the Utah native has two starts at LOR with a best finish of second in his first outing two years ago. However in last year’s race, Self finished two laps down in 11th. With two races left until the championship, Self notes that Lucas Oil isn’t one of his greatest tracks.

“Lucas Oil has been a bit difficult for me. I’ve raced there twice and it’s been a little hit or miss. In ‘17 I about had the race won but got beat late in the race by someone who came in and took tires. Last year we had a ton of issues that unfortunately ended our night early so I guess there’s a little bit of limited base knowledge when It comes to this track. On the other hand, Kansas has always been one of my favorite tracks. I’ve won at Kansas. I love going to any intermediate track in general. My confidence is high because I’ve had success there in the past,” added Self.

His teammate Eckes, sits second and still has a shot, but he will have some work to do if he wants to win the championship in a couple of weeks.

“I’ve got a huge amount of respect for Michael and all the guys on that team,” said Eckes. It’s going to be a lot of fun racing against each other the final two races. I feel like I’ve been in ARCA so long and this is the first time I’ve been able to compete for a championship. It would be very cool to win a championship in my first full-time season for everyone at Toyota Racing, JBL Audio and Venturini Motorsports. Venturini Motorsports has had such a storied history. I would love to add my name alongside past series champions racing for this team.”

“I’m proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish so far but we still have a lot of work to do. Lucas Oil falls into one of our strengths for sure. We dominated the race last year and led a bunch a laps to get the win, looking forward to going back. Kansas might be a little bit of a weakness but at the same time our mile and half program really stepped up at Pocono and we were able to win. We’ll have to see. I’m feeling good about our chances.”

While two of the Venturini Motorsports drivers are fighting for the championship, one driver will try to win the race for herself and that’s Hailie Deegan. Deegan will be making her first Lucas Oil Raceway start this Saturday night.

“There’s a lot of good cars at the top of the field in the series including three of my Venturini Motorsports teammates. I’ve got a lot of confidence right now. Last week we had a really good test. Lucas Oil (Raceway) reminds me of tracks like Evergreen and Irwindale out west, kinda gives me a good baseline going into this weekend’s race. There’s no reason we can’t expect to run top-five.”

Hoping to put his name back in the spotlight after making some positive news earlier this season is rookie sensation Chandler Smith. The young upstart will be making his second LOR start and final start this season.

“Bitter sweet feeling knowing this is my final ARCA race of the season,” said the 17-year-old Smith. “It’s been a good year. But we’re not done yet. We’ve still got unfinished business and I plan on finishing strong. I realize and respect that the focus is on my teammates (Self and Eckes) going into Indianapolis but this 20 team still has a lot on the line. ”

With Venturini Motorsports most certainly the powerhouse team, there’s always one team that is looking to spoil the party and that’s Chad Bryant Racing drivers Joe Graf Jr. and Corey Heim.

Graf comes into the race weekend with 11 top-10s this season and hopes to add another on Saturday. The Chad Bryant driver has one start that came in last year’s race where he finished 13th, a few laps down. Graf hopes to overcome that this weekend.

“Lucas Oil isn’t your typical short track. You really need to hustle the car,” added Graf. “It’s a relatively flat surface but tire wear is so important which makes track position crucial. I think we have a good game plan for Saturday, just need to see what happens between the green flag and the checkered flag.”

Hoping to make a last good impression on Saturday night is Graf’s teammate Corey Heim. The Marietta, Georgia native will be making his last ARCA start of the season and it has been a solid year for the No. 22 driver. Heim has earned seven top fives and 11 top-10 finishes, with a best finish of third (twice) at DuQuoin and Salem. Heim makes his first LOR start Saturday night.

We’ve had a few good finishes in a row now and I’m excited to carry the momentum into my final ARCA start of the year,” said Heim who is ninth in the championship standings despite running a limited schedule this season. “I feel like we’ve had an up and down year, some bad luck here and there, but I feel like I’ve improved in several ways and hope to showcase that in a huge way on Saturday night. The goal this year was to get better and learn and I feel that I’ve done that this year.”

“Hopefully, we can end the year in style with another win for the No. 22 Chad Bryant Racing team.”

Despite not having any previous start at Lucas Oil Raceway, Heim tested the No. 22 Ford a couple of weeks ago to gain some experience.

While it is just another track for Venturini Motorsports and Chad Bryant Racing, it’s a home game for the family owned Travis Braden No. 27 machine. It also marks a great moment a few years back when Braden took home the victory.

“Having a home track race is really a foreign concept to me and I have had a lot of fun being able to call Lucas Oil Raceway my home track for the past few years,” Braden said. “RFMS Racing’s shop is just a few minutes from the track. Growing up in West Virginia, I was used to at least a two-hour drive to even the nearest track typically much further. While the short drive is extremely convenient, probably my favorite part about this home track race is that I get to race in front of a lot of my peers from my daily life here in Indiana. That’s something I’ve never experienced before, and it’s adrenaline-filling. I now know why they call it the home-field advantage.”

Another family owned team looking to make headlines is Bret Holmes and the No. 23 machine. Holmes brings in two starts with finishes of sixth and seventh but will be making his first start in over two years.

“Lucas Oil Raceway is a tough track. You’re running a lot harder and faster there than you are at a track like Salem Speedway. The corners are so flat, you almost have to talk yourself out of lifting going into the corner. It’s your first instinct when it’s that flat to lift. I think this weekend will be a solid race for us. This team has really improved our short-track program over the course of the season. It’s going to be hard racing with it being the second-to-last-race of the season and a short track. The fans will enjoy it for sure.”

With it being a home game for Braden and his No 27 team, it will be a busy weekend for Sam Mayer and the GMS Racing team. Mayer will first head to Dover on Friday afternoon to compete in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season finale with hopes to win the championship. Then he will get on a plane that night and fly to Indy for Saturday’s race at Lucas Oil.

“We have had so much success this year but always came short from a win in the ARCA Menards Series,” Mayer said. “I hope that the momentum we have now, and hopefully after Dover that can rocket us into victory lane Saturday. Mardy (Lindley, crew chief) and I have been working really hard to get better and better and we both are confident in what we will bring to the racetrack to close out our ARCA season.”

Mayer has just one start but did a test run a few weeks back at the track.

“Coming back to a place I’ve been to always helps me as a driver,” Mayer said. “I don’t have to go through an entire learning curve at the track again. The team and I tested at Lucas Oil Raceway a few weeks ago and had a really solid Chevy Accessories Chevrolet. I feel like we have an amazing shot to go get a win.”

Despite having no starts at Lucas Oil, Ty Gibbs hopes to end on a high note in the 2019 ARCA season after being solidly strong earlier this season scoring wins at Gateway and Salem.

“It was really cool to get the win at Gateway. You work so hard to get a win and I’ve finished second so many times this year, to finally break through and get the win felt really good,” Gibbs said. “That last-lap pass for the win was awesome and our Camry was so good from the start of the weekend. I feel like we had the fastest car from when we unloaded. We actually blew up in practice and had to start from the back in the race and came through the field for the win. To be able to do that just shows how strong our team is.”

Being back in the ARCA field this weekend is Chesterfield, Virginia native Howie DiSavino. DiSavino is making his first start in the No. 32 Chevy since his first career ARCA race at Elko back in July, where he finished 10th.

I’m really looking forward to seeing how the ARCA car goes around the track at LOR because it’s so much heavier and has more horsepower than the pro late model does,” DiSavino said in regards to the upcoming race. “We ran good and were up front all race, and I feel like we should have a good race there in the ARCA car. The biggest challenge will be to save tires and to avoid the wall because the groove is up high next to the wall. I’ve never raced anywhere like this but I’m really looking forward to getting another opportunity to race there with Win-Tron.”

Other names looking to be strong at Lucas Oil this weekend are Benjamin Peterson, Darrell Basham, Bobby Gerhart, Eric Caudell, Tommy Vigh Jr., Dick Doheny, Carson Hocevar, Mike Basham, Brad Smith, Scott Melton and Tim Richmond.

Lucas Oil Raceway has seen various winners in its track history. Names like Ramo Stott, Ralph Latham, Bruce Gould, Marvin Smith, Bob Schacht, Davey Allison, Ty Dillon, Frank Kimmel, Brandon Jones, Travis Braden, Chase Briscoe, Dalton Sargeant and Christian Eckes have all visited victory lane at the famous short track in Indianapolis.

It will be a busy Saturday for the ARCA Menards Series drivers with it being a one day show. The only practice session takes place at 2 p.m. ET and ends at 3:30 p.m.

General Tire pole qualifying is slated for 5 p.m. ET with no live TV coverage but can be followed on arcaracing.com.

The Herr’s Potato Chips 200 will get underway shortly after 8 p.m. ET live on MAVTV.

  • Changes announced for 2020 ARCA season

Changes announced for 2020 ARCA season

2020 will be a big season for the ARCA Menards Series with changes to the sanctioning body that will be run by NASCAR.

Announced on Wednesday afternoon were the changes that will be seen next season. What was originally known as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West Series will now become the ARCA Menards Series East and West. The schedule will consist of six to eight races and the crowning of the champion at the end of the season.

As for the ARCA Menards Series, nothing major will change. The season will consist of a 20 race schedule as it has been the past few years. Tracks like Daytona International Speedway, Charlotte Motor Speedway, Madison International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, among others, will be on the schedule. Kansas Speedway will still be the season finale ending race for the series.

Then there is the ARCA Racing Series Showdown between the East, West and the major series. With the Showdown, there will be 10 races to see who is the best among the series competing with each other. There will also be a Showdown champion crowned as well.

Also unique to the series is a rules package that will allow ARCA Menards Series team owners to race in the East or West Series, should their car meet the required rulebook.

“We cannot be more excited about 2020,” said Brandon Thompson, Managing Director, NASCAR Touring Series. “Both NASCAR and ARCA have worked extremely hard over the last year to provide a rules package and schedule that will serve as the foundation for the preeminent series for racing at this level. It was important for us to move the series forward while creating an environment inclusive for both the current long-term owners and drivers in the series as well as aspiring competitors.”

“What first started as a friendship between Bill France Sr. and John Marcum nearly 70 years ago took a momentous step forward today,” said ARCA President Ron Drager. “The amount of history and tradition these series are bringing together to form four elite championships for drivers is an amazing testament to the strength of this sport.

“We are proud and honored to be able to bring the ARCA sanction to the East and West Series and we are looking forward to working with the race teams, tracks, media partners, fans, and sponsors that have helped those series achieve their long term success.”

Also announced is the TV package for next year. The regular ARCA Series can be seen on Fox Sports 1 or 2, while the East and West Series will continue to be on NBCSN.

The Showdown schedule that sees a 10-race schedule has tracks like Salem Speedway, Lucas Oil Raceway, Elko Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Iowa Speedway, World Wide Technology Raceway and the return of Memphis Motorsports Park.

It’s an exciting time for the series that was founded by John Marcum in 1953 and will mark a new era beginning in 2020.
