    The Final Word – Monaco, and Indy, and Charlotte, Oh My!

    It was the biggest day in motorsports, starting with the streets of Monaco, where they have been racing since 1929. Then, to Indianapolis, where they have been logging 500 miles this time of year since 1911. Finally, the long way home, the World 600 at Charlotte for the boys and girl with fenders.

    Overseas, Nico Rosberg claimed the prize for the third straight year. It helps when it is handed to you. During a late caution, the dominant car of Lewis Hamilton was called in for fresh tires. He had thought Rosberg and those immediately behind him had done the same. They had not. Nice call, team. Thanks a bunch. Surprise, surprise, surprise, as Gomer Pyle used to say.

    Gomer’s creator, actor Jim Nabors, performed “Back Home Again in Indiana” for the final time last year, but Juan Pablo Montoya was back in Indianapolis. An early mishap cost the former NASCAR performer what passes for a rear fender on his open wheeled car, forcing him back to 30th. That set the stage for his charge through the pack. With just three laps to go, he made his pass for the lead and claimed the crown he first won back in 2000.

    They have been racing 600 miles at Charlotte on Memorial Day weekend since 1960, the longest NASCAR event of the season. Martin Truex Jr. would have been the story, had he won after leading 131 laps. He did not. Kurt Busch led the way for 118, but no suds for him, either. In fact, five other drivers led more than Carl Edwards, but it was the man from Missouri doing the back flip in the end as he led the final 21 to take his first of the season, 24th of his Cup career. It might still be a bit premature, but what the heck. Welcome to the Chase, Mr. Edwards.

    Welcome to the Hall of Fame, Bruton Smith. The 88-year old owner of the Charlotte track, along with seven others on the circuit, will be inducted as part of the class of 2016. Joining him will be two-time champ Terry Labonte, the legendary Curtis Turner, six-time Modified king Jerry Cook, and 1970 Cup champion Bobby Isaac.

    Landon Cassill was still running at the end of the race in Charlotte. For another hour, 41 minutes, and 49 seconds, he continued to run the 14 miles between the track and the Hall of Fame. This time, the only rubber on the road was on his sneakers. This sounds like something my sons might do. I, on the other hand, am much too smart…and fat…and old…for that.

    If you want to win the Indianapolis 500, spend some time in NASCAR. Montoya won his second after 278 races in Cup and the XFINITY series over parts of the previous nine seasons. His Indy lead engineer, Brian Campe, was on the box as a crew chief for 22 Nationwide races in 2009, including seven for Dale Earnhardt Jr. Not a bad apprenticeship.

    Jeff Gordon was at Indianapolis, drove the pace car before returning to North Carolina. After getting out of the car, he will head to the broadcast booth to join Mike Joy and Darrell Waltrip at FOX next season. I think they might be replacing the wrong guy, but maybe that is just me.

    So, what is next? The Monster Mile in Dover is slated for this Sunday, where everybody who has won there the past nine events also has claimed a Cup title along the way. In fact, over the past six years, the only non-champion to take the checkered flag there was Kyle Busch. Not a bad pick, come to think of it.

    ByrnesStrong Poll Votes Rick Hendrick and Alan Kulwicki In For Next HOF Spot

    The ByrnesStrong Poll, formerly known as The Century Poll but renamed in honor of Steve Byrnes who just lost his battle to cancer, focused this month on who of the twenty NASCAR Hall of Fame nominees would be voted in for induction in the next class.

    The ByrnesStrong Poll members included as usual fifty voters from the NASCAR garage and fifty from the NASCAR media corps. Those members from the garage included drivers, crew chiefs, crew members, team owners, sponsors, manufacturer representatives and track officials.

    The actual voting breakdown for the ByrnesStrong Poll was as follows:

    Both NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick and 1992 Cup champion Alan Kulwicki tied for the top spot with 15 apiece. It was also evident that those two were the front-runners for all of those voting from the garage area.

    Those that voted for Hendrick cited his eleven Cup championships, his dedication to the sport, and his participation as a multi-car team owner and those that voted for Alan Kulwicki noted his tenure as a driver who could always ‘do more with less’ and as the last owner/driver to win a Cup championship.

    It was not surprising that the next vote-getter garnered the most votes from the media, with a total of nine votes going to Benny Parsons. BP, as Benny Parsons was affectionately known, was a driver, a Cup champion, a car owner, and a broadcaster. His professorial and relaxed approach to broadcasting was legendary and sorely missed when he passed away on January 16, 2007.

    The media also seemed to favor Curtis Turner and Mark Martin in the voting poll. Turner was one of NASCAR’s early drivers, who had quite the reputation for not only driving hard but playing hard as well. During his career, Turner won 360 races in several different racing series, including 22 in the NASCAR Convertible Division in 1956, and 17 wins in the NASCAR Grand National series (now Sprint Cup).

    Turner did, however, have an interesting relationship with NASCAR, having been banned for trying to organize a labor union before being allowed to race again four years later. Turner died in an airplane crash near Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on October 4, 1970.

    Unlike Turner, Mark Martin’s tenure on the track is more recent, although he is currently not behind the wheel of a race car. Martin has often been described as ‘the best driver never to win a championship’, as he has finished second in the Cup Series standings five times.

    All of the other nominees in this month’s ByrnesStrong Poll at least garnered one vote, with the exception of Bobby Isaac, a 1970 Cup Champion, whose crew chief was the legendary Harry Hyde. Isaac won 37 Cup races, including eleven races during his championship season. He also holds the record for most poles in a single season, with 20 poles in 1969.

    Outside of NASCAR, Isaac set 28 world speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. He, unfortunately, passed away at the age of 45 from a heart attack after a race at Hickory Motor Speedway.

    Bobby Isaac possessed the one attribute that all NASCAR drivers crave. He was quite simply; fast. In 1969, he captured the record for most poles in a single season with 19. That record still stands today. In fact, only 38 drivers have achieved 19 or more poles throughout their entire career.

    Isaac is probably one of the least known NASCAR Champions. Often described as a loner and reluctant to give interviews, he was most comfortable behind the wheel of a race car.

    He was the second youngest of nine children and his father died when he was six. The kids were left to take care of the farm and themselves while their mother found work in town and Isaac eventually quit school at the age of 13. Three years later his mother passed away. Many of the details surrounding his young life vary depending upon who you ask. But most will agree that his life changed when he first set eyes on a race track and that track was Hickory Motor Speedway, otherwise known as “America’s most famous short track.”

    He was around 19 or 20 when he decided that he wanted to become a race car driver and he began competing and winning in other peoples’ cars at the local dirt tracks. Isaac became part of a group of racers including NASCAR Hall of Famers (NHOF) David Pearson, Ned Jarrett and Richard Petty who frequented the same tracks.

    Pearson had seen Isaac around and introduced himself at one such track in Cowpens, South Carolina.

    “He was hard to talk to,” Pearson said. He wouldn’t talk to nobody. He was kind of quiet and everything. I just more or less made him talk to me. I liked him and we became real close friends.”

    Isaac spoke about those early days saying, “One time I drove 200 miles to drive a fellow’s modified car with $4 in my pocket. I figured that I’d have enough to buy gas to get down there and eat a hot dog before the race. The gas was $3, but I had to put two quarts of oil in my car so I was broke when I left town. When the feature started my stomach was not only growling but I didn’t have enough gas to get back home. I drove that car as hard as I could and won. I had to win!”

    Isaac was making his mark on the dirt track circuit but what he really wanted was to move up to the NASCAR Grand National Series (now Sprint Cup Series). But that required money he didn’t have so he began looking for someone to finance him.

    Unfortunately, while Isaac was becoming known as a fierce and successful competitor he was also gaining a reputation as a hot head. If he felt someone had raced him unfairly, he would settle the dispute with his fists off the track or by running a driver off the track during a race.

    It has been said that Isaac was one of the most fined drivers in NASCAR history. Although there are no records to back up this claim, his temper is well documented. It soon became a battle of wills; Isaac would get in a fight and NASCAR would fine him. The more he fought, the higher the fine.

    The story goes that finally NASCAR had enough and Pat Purcell, the executive manager of NASCAR at the time, laid down the law.

    “Racing doesn’t need you,” Purcell said, “but it’s up to you to decide if you need racing. Racing is going to get along without you unless you change your ways and learn to use your head instead of your fists. Now it’s up to you.”

    Isaac took the advice to heart and later began to golf, which started off as a way to exercise, but became a way to let off steam.

    ‘I’m taking my temper out on the course now,” he explained, “not on the race track. That’s no place to get mad. There’s a difference. You break a golf club, you can always replace it.”

    The turning point in Isaac’s career came when he got a phone call from the famed crew chief and mechanic, Harry Hyde. K&K Insurance, owned by Nord and Teddi Krauskopf, was financing a team and they wanted Isaac as their driver. The plan was to run 12 races in 1967 with the goal of winning a championship in a few years.

    In 1968, he ran his first full season in the Grand National Series and finished second in the series standings to David Pearson. In 1969 his 19 poles and career-high 17 wins earned him a sixth place ranking at season’s end.

    The 1969 season also featured what Isaac called his most satisfying victory, even more so than his 1970 Championship. It came at the last race of the year at the two-mile Texas World Speedway in College Station, Texas. It was the track’s inaugural race, the Texas 500, and NHOF nominee Buddy Baker had the win in sight after leading 150 laps. But Baker crashed during caution as he was apparently trying to read the pit board with only 21 laps remaining. Isaac grabbed the win, leading the last 19 laps.

    It was Isaac’s 20th victory but his first win at a track larger than one mile.

    “We won a lot of short-track races, but we couldn’t pull it all together on the big tracks until the last race of the season at Texas. That win was my biggest moment in racing,” Isaac told Greg Fielden for “NASCAR: The Complete History.”

    In 1970, Isaac won the Cup championship scoring 11 wins, 13 poles and 32 top-fives in his No. 71 K&K Insurance Dodge Charger Daytona.

    “Winning the championship gave me personal satisfaction, but I’d rank it second to the Texas win,” Isaac said. “The way I look at it, it took me seven years to win a superspeedway race and only three years to win the championship.”

    He later came to appreciate the significance of his championship. Isaac appeared in a documentary called “Once upon a Wheel,” hosted by Paul Newman. It was filmed in 1971 and various drivers were asked why they chose to race.

    “This has been a life-long ambition for me since I’ve been in racing, to be the Grand National Champion,” Isaac replied. “I had a lot of good friends that was the champion years before me and I like when we’re standing around to feel that I’m as good as they was. They was the world’s champion and I’m the world’s champion.”

    Isaac’s claim to fame did not end there. In September 1971, he took his Dodge to the Bonneville Salt Flats and set 28 world-class records in one day. Many of those records still stand today.

    In 1972 Isaac walked away from the K&K Insurance team amid problems between owner Krauskopf and NASCAR over rule changes. Those issues led to Krauskopf boycotting some races while Isaac sat on the sidelines. He was also unhappy to learn that the team had agreed to run a second car with Buddy Baker, feeling that it would unfairly divide their resources. More than anything, Isaac just wanted to race every week but he remained appreciative of all the opportunities he had been given by Krauskopf.

    “They were awfully good to me. I can’t say anything bad about Nord or Harry. They did what they thought they had to do,” he emphasized. “I won more races in two years than most drivers have in a career.”

    Isaac continued racing until 1976, but he never won another NASCAR race after leaving the K&K Insurance team. His final race was at Hickory Motor Speedway on August 13, 1977. With 10 laps to go, Isaac pitted. He asked for a relief driver and took a few steps after leaving his car, but suddenly collapsed.

    Dr. Jerry Punch, a veteran ABC/ESPN broadcaster, was a second-year medical student at the time and was in the announcer’s booth that night.

    “It was a typical Isaac race, smooth and consistent,” said Punch. “But with about 40 laps to go, he got very erratic. After driving all over the track, Isaac pulled into the pits with 10 laps to go. It looked like a case of heat prostration.”

    “They took him to Catawba Memorial Hospital in Hickory,” Punch continued. “When I walked in, they had Bobby on one of the tables. He still had his fire suit on, but it was unzipped, and he had his sleeves tied around his waist. And he told me, ‘That old car just drove so hard tonight. My arms just ache.’”

    As Isaac was being examined in the X-ray room, he went into cardiac arrest and the doctors were unable to revive him. He was only 45 years old at the time of his death.

    Isaac had a short but impressive career. His quiet demeanor off the track was in stark contrast to the intensity with which he drove a race car. A man of few words, he let his actions on the track do his talking for him.

    Ryan Newman’s Loudon Love Affair Continues with Pole Run

    In spite of the rain drops that yet again delayed action on the track, Ryan Newman continued his love affair with the ‘Magic Mile’, scoring a record-setting sixth pole.

    [media-credit name=”Gary Buchanan” align=”alignright” width=”225″][/media-credit]Newman, behind the wheel of the No. 39 Haas Automation Chevrolet, turned a lap of 28.213 seconds and a speed of 135.002 mph.

    This was Newman’s third pole in 2011 and his 59th career pole, tying him for ninth all-time with Bobby Isaac, Hall of Fame Nominee. In spite of it being a personal career pole best, it was the drama of it all that most impressed Newman.

    “In general, I don’t think I’ve seen that kind of drama going into the last five cars qualifying in my ten or eleven years of experience,” Newman said. “It’s kind of a tough situation, one hand you’re thinking other guys had to qualify in the sprinkles.”

    “My track was dry,” Newman continued. “I don’t know if it was any faster. I think we picked up the same speed as the other guys did earlier in qualifying.”

    The drama particularly played out with five-time champion Jimmie Johnson, driver of the No. 48 Lowes Chevrolet, who started his qualifying run but then pulled off the track, only to be resoundly booed and heckled by the crowd, who were desperate for the completion of qualifying.

    “Some of them did and some of them didn’t go out, but in the end we’re supposed to have dry track conditions or at least not be raining when we go out on the race track,” Newman said. “So, I understand where Jimmie (Johnson) came from when he pulled in.”

    “I’m just really proud of my team,” Newman said. “We backed up what we did here at least on Friday from the spring race and give the Haas Automation a good starting spot.”

    The Red Bull teammates of Kasey Kahne, behind the wheel of the No. 4 Red Bull Toyota, and Brian Vickers, driving the No. 83 Red Bull Toyota, were also part of the drama that played out in Loudon qualifying.

    Vickers went out prior to the rain drops falling, where Kahne had to cool his heels with the five remaining cars awaiting the drying of the track. In the end, Kahne still scored the outside pole, while Vickers lost the provisional pole, falling to the third spot.

    “Obviously the conditions were tough,” Vickers said. “I would have liked to have seen it play out just running straight through.”

    “It is what it is,” Vickers continued. “Either way we started out better than we would have.”

    “We ended up with a top-three start,” Vickers said. “So, that’s great and both Red Bull cars are up front.”

    “But again, I would have liked to have seen our laps hold if we were heads up in the same position.”

    Outside pole sitter Kasey Kahne was second quickest when he finally got to qualify, with a lap of 28.263 seconds and a speed of 134.763 mph.

    “It was a good effort,” Kahne said. “We ended up right where we would have been if it would have ended up if it hadn’t rained.”

    “The track was definitely slicker,” Kahne continued. “The way my car handled, we were definitely quicker in practice. But I’m glad we got qualifying in.”

    Greg Biffle, driving the No. 16 Ford40MPG.com Ford, and Kurt Busch, behind the wheel of the No. 22 Shell Pennzoil Dodge, rounded out the top five for the 15th annual Sylvania 300.  The remainder of the top ten qualifiers were Kevin Harvick, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, Martin Truex, Jr. and Jimmie Johnson.
