    Crafton Wins Homestead Truck Race; Erik Jones Claims Series Title

    As strong as he was in winning Friday night’s Ford EcoBoost 200, Matt Crafton was already looking ahead to 2016.

    Crafton, whose hopes for a third consecutive NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship were dashed by a crash at Phoenix last week, won his sixth race of the season, holding off John Hunter Nemechek and Tyler Reddick in the season finale.

    Although Crafton’s No. 88 Toyota Tundra finished 2.9 seconds ahead of Nemechek and more than six seconds ahead of Reddick, the 39-year-old veteran still wound up third in the point standings, 15 behind 19-year-old Erik Jones.

    “I was having so much fun there at the end of this race,” said Crafton after his first career victory at HMS. “Six wins with as many laps as we’ve led–it’s been awesome this season. We just made too many mistakes. I made too many mistakes. … I promise one thing: It’s going to make us stronger in 2016.”

    Crafton said he was happy to be able to “take the gloves off” and go all out for a win at HMS. “That was a lot of fun,” he said. “It’s amazing what Junior (crew chief Joiner) can do with these trucks. On that last run, we hit a home run there.”

    Ultimately, Kyle Busch’s eye for youthful talent paid off as Jones did what he needed to in becoming the youngest driver ever to claim a CWTS title (19 years, 5 months, 21 days) and first NASCAR Next alum. He also became the first to win a driver’s title for Kyle Busch Motorsports.

    “He put it to me when he beat me in a Super Late Model race,” recalled Busch, who will race for the Sprint Cup title on Sunday. “I tend to pick up on the talent of younger kids. Actually, the first time he raced against me, he blew my doors off, then blew up 40 laps later. I said, ‘Good. I don’t have to race (against) this one.’”

    There was no blowing up Friday night.

    Jones entered the race 19 points ahead of Reddick, his nearest competitor, and 32 points ahead of Crafton, the Keystone Light Pole-sitter. Making his first HMS start, Jones needed only to avoid trouble and finish 15th or higher to claim the series crown.

    Jones, who notched three wins this season and has seven career CWTS victories, finished sixth in the race behind Ben Kennedy and Timothy Peters. He qualified fifth and was content to race safely and efficiently, remaining in the top 10 for most of the race and avoiding any calamity on the track.

    “I can’t think of a better way to repay these guys. I can’t think of a better ending than that,” said Jones, who expects to drive full-time in the XFINITY Series for Joe Gibbs Racing next year after parts of three seasons with Kyle Busch Motorsports.

    “Eric’s done a lot of growing up in a short period of time,” Busch said. “I’m glad he stuck with me and our plan. I think he has a lot of bigger and greater things ahead on his plate.”

    NASCAR Drive for Diversity and NASCAR Next alum Daniel Suarez appeared to have the strongest truck early in Friday’s race, charging from sixth to the lead. But Suarez slid up the track into the truck of Dexter Stacey on Lap 61, falling back to 15th, then found the wall again on Lap 83.

    That left Crafton in position to dominate the race. He led 93 of the 134 laps, leaving NASCAR Next driver Nemechek (Chevrolet) and Reddick (Ford) in his wake to battle for second.

    Reddick, driving for Brad Keselowski Racing, started fourth and advanced to second behind Crafton with 40 laps to go. But by then, Jones, who briefly slid back to 14th after a caution flag shuffle, had rallied to seventh, keeping Reddick, also a 19-year-old driver, at bay in the chase for the title.

    “We were very consistent this year. I’m proud about that,” Reddick said. “We just have to move on to next year. I know what second place feels like and I really don’t like it too much. If I didn’t have enough reasons to win a championship, I’ve got one more.”

    Jones Extends Championship Lead With Truck Series Win At Texas

    FORT WORTH, Texas – On turf that typically belongs to two-time defending NASCAR Camping World Series champion Matt Crafton, Erik Jones dominated on Friday night.

    Jones led 117 of 147 laps on the way to victory in the WinStar World Casino & Resort 350 at Texas Motor Speedway, his first win at the venue, his third of the season and the seventh of his career.

    In an event that featured only one caution, a track-record low, Jones finished 2.855 seconds ahead of runner-up and NASCAR Driver for Diversity alum Daniel Suarez, who matched his career-best finish. Jones extended his series from 10 to 17 points over Crafton, who ran fourth after winning the Keystone Light Pole Award. There are two more races left in the Truck Series season.

    The top two finishers drove Toyotas fielded by Kyle Busch Motorsports.

    Jones, who is doing triple duty this weekend at Texas, will race the No. 4 Tundra next at Phoenix, where he has won the last two races.

    “Getting the win here, that’s a nice boost for everybody, not just myself but everybody at KBM,” Jones said. “We needed this to get back on track. We’ve struggled a little bit the last month, month and a half and worked hard to get back to this point.

    “And now, to go out there and win one the way we did, and lead as many laps as we did, that’s a really nice statement for us. Hopefully, we can go to Phoenix and do the same kind of thing we’ve done the last two years. It’s nice to have that points lead back up closer to the 20 range than the 10 range, but we still have two more weeks, and we have to hold onto it, be strong and close this deal out.”

    In recent years, Crafton’s been the dominant force in the series at 1.5-mile intermediate speedways, but Jones grabbed the lead on Lap 13 and pulled away to a lead of nearly three seconds. Joes squandered that advantage with a slow pit stop under green on Lap 47, but the lone caution on Lap 54 bunched the field and erased a lead of 5.9 seconds built by Crafton.

    Jones overtook Crafton for the top spot on lap 65 and controlled the race the rest of the way, losing the lead only briefly during a cycle of green-flag pit stops around Lap 100.

    The race was the shortest ever in the Truck Series at Texas, lasting just one hour, 23 minutes and 48 seconds.

    FORT WORTH, Texas (November 6, 2015) – Rookie Erik Jones continued his march toward a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship with a dominating victory in Friday night’s WinStar World Casino & Resort 350 at Texas Motor Speedway.

    Jones (No. 4 Toyota) led 117 laps of the 147-lap event as he cruised to a 2.855-second margin of victory over Kyle Busch Motorsports teammate Daniel Suarez (ARRIS Toyota) for his third win of the season and sixth of his career. It also was his first NCWTS win at Texas, which came in his third career start.

    The victory allowed Jones to stretch his championship lead from 10 points to 17 over two-time defending NCWTS champion Matt Crafton (No. 88 Damp Rid/Menards Toyota) despite his strong outing. Crafton started on the pole and led 27 laps en route to a fourth-place finish, his seventh top-10 effort in the last nine races.

    Jones, however, extended his run of consecutive top-10 finishes to 13 with the win, allowing him to inch closer to that series crown with races remaining next week in Phoenix and then the Nov. 20 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

    Jones, who won his first career XFINITY Series race at Texas in April, took the lead from Crafton on Lap 13 and did not encounter any major challenges throughout the evening. Crafton led again for a 15-lap stint from Laps 50-64 before Jones took complete command and led 82 of the final 83 laps.

    Caution periods and possible gambles by other drivers never came about as the race established a track record for fewest cautions (1) and caution laps (8). The race also set a track record in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series for fastest time of race at 1 hour, 23 minutes and 48 seconds. The previous mark was 1 hour, 25 minutes and 30 seconds from the fall race in 2012.

    In addition to the 1-2 finish by Jones and Suarez, it was a banner night for Kyle Busch Motorsports as all three of its drivers finished in the top 10. Christopher Bell (No. 54 JBL Toyota) rounded out the strong performance for the organization with an eighth-place finish.

    Atlanta Motor Speedway introduces “Perfect Race Weather Guarantee”

    The 2016 schedule still hasn’t been released, but one track has both announced it’s date and a full “credit” for inclement weather.

    Tuesday morning, Atlanta Motor Speedway announced that the NASCAR traveling circus of the Camping World Truck, XFINITY and Sprint Cup Series will return on the weekend of Feb. 26-28, 2016 following the 58th Daytona 500. The track has reduced the price of tickets by 15 percent, the cheapest being $39 and most expensive being $99.

    The most notable announcement was the “Perfect Race Weather Guarantee.” It doesn’t mean that track General Manager Ed Clark acquired Destro’s Weather Dominator and will crank the temperature up to 100 (that’s for you G.I. Joe fanatics), but it will give fans options if they can’t make the race. Here’s an excerpt from the press release.

    “The all-new policy offers fans options in the event that inclement weather prevents them from attending the race. If the daytime high temperature in Hampton, Georgia on Saturday or Sunday of race weekend fails to reach at least 50 degrees as observed by the National Weather Service, or if weather issues postpone the day’s activities to a different day and fans are unable to attend on the rescheduled date, fans who do not enter the admission gates on the day the event is held will receive an account credit for the full price of their tickets. Credits can be applied to any future AMS event or events in 2016 or the 2017 NASCAR Weekend.”

    In other words, if the weather doesn’t go higher than penguin house or if mother nature decides to rain on us and you can’t make the race, you can use that credit for a free ticket to the 2017 NASCAR race weekend at Atlanta.

    In addition, Atlanta Motor Speedway is offering three different ticket packages for the 2016 race weekend. Their “Good” ticket package, starting at $79, includes general admission seating for Sprint Cup Series qualifying on Friday, tickets to the XFINITY and Truck doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 for the Sprint Cup Series. Next is the “Better” package at $139. This package is comprised of everything included in the “Good” package plus a weekend FanVision rental and a pre-race pit pass for Sunday’s Cup race. The “Best” package at $179 includes everything in the “Good” and “Better” packages and $25 off any purchase greater than $50 at the AMS souvenir shop.

    Statement from Brad Keselowski Racing Regarding Driver Austin Theriault

    STATESVILLE, N.C. (Sunday, Oct. 4) – Brad Keselowski Racing driver Austin Theriault was transported to University Medical Center in Las Vegas during the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

    Theriault underwent a comprehensive CT scan of the upper body, which showed a 10 percent compression fracture of the lower back. Theriault was released and will travel back to North Carolina where he will follow up with an orthopedic specialist for further treatment.

    No further updates are expected today.

    LAS VEGAS—John Wes Townley collected his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday night, saving just enough fuel during his final run to win the Rhino Linings 350.

    Townley, who qualified his No. 05 Chevrolet second, battled among the top five for much of the race taking the lead from two-time series champion Matt Crafton with five laps to go when Crafton was forced to pit road for a splash of fuel.

    Townley’s victory came in the Georgia veteran’s 89th career start. He scored a previous best finish of third at Texas Motor Speedway in June. His best performance at Las Vegas had been a seventh place.

    Both Townley and crew chief Michael Shelton credited the team’s spotter, Terry Cook, for coaching Townley through the deciding laps.

    “I would have run out of gas if it hadn’t been for Terry,” said Townley of the former series competitor. “I took care of this thing (truck) tonight and it took care of me. This is amazing; awesome.”

    Said Shelton, a former series championship crew chief, “It’s been a lot of time coming. He’s (Townley) had a tough career at times.”

    Crafton, who led the most laps and qualified his No. 88 Toyota on the pole, finished eighth. He closed the gap on championship leader Erik Jones to four points as Jones finished ninth.

    Red Horse Racing teammates Timothy Peters and Ben Kennedy drove their Toyotas to second and third-place finishes, respectively. John Hunter Nemechek, who won at Chicagoland Speedway last month in a race also dictated by fuel mileage, took fourth despite being involved in an early caution. Brandon Jones was fifth.

    Nine different drivers swapped the lead 15 times with Crafton—whose ThorSport Racing truck had been the fastest in both practice and qualifying—leading seemingly at will. His greatest challenge came from a teammate, Cameron Hayley, who passed Crafton on the 69th lap and built a lead of five seconds before a slow pit stop dropped him back in the field.

    Hayley’s Toyota, running third behind Crafton and Townley, also ran short of fuel and finished 10th.

    Contact in Turn 4 on lap 14 between Brad Keselowski Racing teammates Austin Theriault and Tyler Reddick sent Theriault’s No. 29 Ford head-on into the outside wall, triggering the race’s first caution. Theriault was assisted from his truck by safety workers and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation, where he reportedly was awake and alert.

    Reddick continued to finish seventh and remain in championship contention, 16 points behind Jones.

    Johnny Sauter, the race’s 2009 winner, and Nemechek triggered another caution on lap 49, spinning in Turn 2 while battling for the runner-up position behind leader Peters. Both continued after pit stops for repairs.

    Notes: Defending Rhino Linings 350 winner Jones, who entered the season’s 18th event leading Crafton by seven points, qualified his No. 4 Toyota 15th but fell to the rear of the field at the start after his Kyle Busch Motorsports crew made an engine change. … Action sports star Travis Pastrana made his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series start, finishing 16th. Pastrana was 15th in his initial appearance, also at LVMS in 2012.
