Truex runs away with win at the Monster Mile

A mistake by Alex Bowman on the final lap of the second stage let Martin Truex Jr. pounce on and pass him to win the stage. After that, the Gander RV 400 was his race to lose.

Lap traffic allowed Kevin Harvick and Truex to reel in Bowman. Harvick tried, but failed to overtake him, as did Truex. On the final lap of the second stage, however, Bowman went too high in Turn 1 and Truex made the pass underneath him to win the stage.

For the final 160 laps, nobody could catch Truex. Aside from a pit cycle under green, he didn’t lose the lead and drove to his 21st Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory, and third at Dover International Speedway in his 488th start.

“What a race car we had today,” he said. “(This) SiriusXM Camry was just incredible. Thanks to everybody at the shop…

“We came here with a new setup this time, because we had kind of an older setup that we won with in 2016. We’ve been good, but not good enough.

“Just hats off to Cole (Pearn) James and all those guys, everybody at (Toyota Racing Development) back in California, Costa Mesa for some awesome engines, awesome horsepower.”

He started from the rear of the field, after his car failed pre-race inspection, and ended the race with a nine-second margin of victory. But he swore that it wasn’t as easy as it looked.

“It was a lot of work,” he said. “It was tough, but this race car, man, it was just incredible.”

Alex Bowman, who started in the rear for failing inspection, finished the afternoon in second for the second weekend in a row.

“Talladega (Superspeedway) is a speedway and it’s a lot of luck involved,” Bowman said. “But to come here to, in my opinion, the hardest race track we go to and run from the back of all things was pretty special.

“Just proud of everybody at Hendrick Motorsports for all the improvement we’ve made over the last year or so, and we’re gonna keep it going.”

While Kyle Larson fought a tight-handling car early in the race, he got the car handling right and rounded out the podium for his best finish of the 2019 season.

“And in the last run there, after cycling through green-flag stops, I was really loose and got stuck in traffic and then was just looser in the dirty air,” Larson said. “So, I had to just make sure I hit the bottom lap after lap to hold (Kevin) Harvick off. So, it was good to finally have a clean race. I don’t think we’ve had a clean weekend all year long. And we’re 11 weeks into the season. So, it’s good to finally get a clean day, like I said, and thanks to our race team. Our pit crew did a good job today as well. It was a nice day.”

Harvick and Chase Elliott, who led a race high of 145 laps, rounded out the top five.

“…we just fell off there at the end of that second Stage,” Elliott said. “That was the time of the race that we needed to be controlling it and not falling back. Just a bad time to have a bad half of a run and that is kind of what happened. So, we were fast, just not fast enough when it really mattered.”

Erik Jones, Joey Logano, William Byron, Clint Bowyer and Kyle Busch rounded out the top 10.

    RACE SUMMARY

Chase Elliott led the field to green and led the first 108 laps. After Ricky Stenhouse Jr. cut a right-front tire, hit the wall in Turn 1 and brought out the caution on Lap 106, Joey Logano took just right-side tires and exited the pits with the lead. He drove on to win the first stage.

Logano pitted during the stage break, which handed the lead to teammate Brad Keselowski. He led for 57 laps, before he pitted from the lead under green on Lap 181. After a few drivers took turns in the front for nine laps, Elliott cycled back to the lead.

Thanks to lap traffic, Bowman pulled up to his teammate and passed him entering Turn 1 on Lap 223. Likewise, lap traffic allowed Kevin Harvick and Truex to reel him in. Harvick tried, but failed to overtake him, as did Truex. On the final lap of the second stage, however, Bowman went too high in Turn 1 and Truex made the pass underneath him to win the stage.

Truex lost the lead for 27 laps, while Daniel Suarez stayed out hoping to catch a caution. When that strategy failed, he pitted on Lap 347 and Truex led the rest of the way.

    Who had a good day

After starting the day in the rear, Bowman drove through the field and led 16 laps, on his way to a runner-up finish.

Teammate Elliott led a race high of 145 laps, on his way to a fifth-place finish.

William Byron earned his second top 10 finish of the season, with an eighth-place finish.

Kyle Busch finished 10th to extend his top 10 streak to 11 races. He tied Morgan Shepherd for the longest top 10 streak in the Modern Era of NASCAR.

    Who had a lousy day

Denny Hamlin, who started the day in eighth, quickly fell through the field as his car’s handling went loose. He finished the first stage in 23rd. His afternoon crossed the Mason-Dixon Line when he cut a tire, couldn’t get to pit road and spun in Turn 1 on Lap 265.

    Nuts and bolts

The race lasted three hours eight minutes and 37 seconds, at an average speed of 127.242 mph.

There were 15 lead changes among 11 different drivers and six cautions for 31 laps.

Kyle Busch leaves with a nine-point lead.

  • NASCAR postpones Dover race to Monday

NASCAR postpones Dover race to Monday

Rain invaded the Dover, Delaware area on Saturday night and did not let up throughout Sunday, forcing NASCAR to postpone the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Gander RV 400 until noon ET Monday.

The race will be broadcast on FS1, MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. There will also be a competition caution on Lap 40 due to all of the rubber on the track being washed away as a result of all the rain.

There was a 75% chance of rain to begin with but that increased to 100% in the early morning hours of Sunday. After a long part of the day, NASCAR dried the track and completed the pre-race ceremonies. However, right before NASCAR took the one to go flag, the rain came again and after five minutes of riding around, they brought the teams down pit road and called it.

It will be an all Hendrick Motorsports front row with last week’s winner and the winner from last year’s fall Dover race, Chase Elliott, starting on the pole with William Byron in second.

Four drivers, including Alex Bowman, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Preece and Matt Tifft  will start the race from the rear of the field after failing pre-race inspection twice.

  • Christopher Bell captures third Xfinity win this season at Dover

Christopher Bell captures third Xfinity win this season at Dover

Christopher Bell captured his third Xfinity Series victory of the season in Saturday’s Allied Steel Buildings 200 at Dover International Speedway. Bell also won the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash’ bonus for scoring the highest finish among a field of four drivers.

“I just can’t say enough about everyone on this team 20 at Joe Gibbs Racing. They never quit. They keep working and over the last couple weeks we’ve had really fast race cars, but we just haven’t been able to capitalize on it. This one is really out to my pit crew. They did a great job of getting me out first there where I could control the restarts,” Bell said.

“Over that long run there, I felt like I could make gains on him running the top. Last time we were here, the top was really good for me, but it seemed like it rubbered up more and the top was a little less of a disadvantage. Once we got the lead – thank you to my pit crew, they did an outstanding job – it’s really special to be here,” Bell continued.

Cole Custer dominated the race, leading 155 laps but after Kaz Grala’s spin on Lap 154, everybody came in for one final stop and the Joe Gibbs squad got Bell out before Stewart-Haas Racing’s group.

Bell said after the race in Victory Lane, “There’s no doubt that he (Cole Custer) was really good.”

Bell had to overcome not one restart but two restarts as Riley Herbst spun out on Lap 175 and then once again on Lap 181 as Grey Gaulding got involved in an incident with Vinnie Miller.

Justin Allgaier finished second for his fifth top-10 this year, Tyler Reddick was third followed by Custer and Chase Briscoe to round out the top five.

    Stage 1:

Cole Custer led from wire to wire after starting on the pole in his Stewart-Haas Racing Ford. The Ladera Ranch, California native went coast to coast, leading all 40 laps as there was no caution during the first stage. There was an incident, however, as Noah Gragson got into the wall. There was no yellow as Gragson was able to continue. Gragson ended up finishing 19th after having to pit late in the race.

    Stage 2:

Stage 2 began right where it left off in Stage 1 as the winner from Auto Club Speedway continued his approach to tame Miles the Monster. Custer began the race leading only 38 laps in his four previous trips to the Monster Mile. After the second stage? He led double that. Custer once again led from start to finish, lapping everybody up to 15th place before the green and checkered flags waved to end the stage.

This was Bell’s 11th victory in 51 Xfinity starts in his career but he does trail Tyler Reddick by 23 points in the point standings.

The NASCAR Xfinity teams will have two weeks off before heading to Charlotte Motor Speedway on Memorial Day Weekend.

  • Harrison Burton quietly finishes third at Dover

Harrison Burton quietly finishes third at Dover

In previous years at Dover, Harrison Burton has driven the No. 18 Kyle Busch Motorsports Truck to finishes of 13th in his first outing in 2017 and fifth in last year’s outing.

Burton was looking to improve upon those results coming into the 2019 race and hoping that perhaps a win could solidify those finishes.

“I love Bristol and Dover and fast, high-banked tracks — they fit my style very well,” he said before the race. “I enjoy it and hopefully we can continue that success and build on that. Last year, we didn’t have the best truck at the beginning, but we kept working on it and made it pretty good. We just need to start the weekend of better than we did last time, get a good qualifying spot and we’ll be there for the win — hopefully.”

Burton qualified ninth and when it was all said and done, he came up three spots short, but it wasn’t for lack of trying.

After finishing fifth in Stage 1 and sixth in Stage 2, Burton made everyone hold their breath, as he made a heart-stopping move for the lead after the restart with 83 to go. He couldn’t make it stick and had to fall back to third.

Evidently, the No. 18 Team had to work their way back up after some various strategies on the late-race pit stop. In the end, the scoring pylon showed Burton and the No. 18 Safelite Autoglass Toyota Tundra winding up third for his second top five of the year.

“It was a lot of fun,” Burton said to MRN Radio. “The truck came in for the second half of the race. We had a shot at it and then we got clear of everyone, except for Ben Rhodes. I got trapped in the idea of running the bottom. I don’t know, I got tight behind him. That’s when we lost the race. I’m upset with myself about that, but we had a good day. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun, and had some big moments. We were able to rebound from that and had a good points day, and we’ll go win the next one.”

  • ThorSport teammates Enfinger and Crafton collect top-five finishes at Dover

ThorSport teammates Enfinger and Crafton collect top-five finishes at Dover

Grant Enfinger and Matt Crafton each had to settle for a top-five finish as their teammate Johnny Sauter went on to win Saturday’s Jegs 200 at Dover International Speedway.

For Enfinger and the No. 98 team, he would quietly end up finishing fourth after also finishing fourth in both stages.

“Overall a great day for ThorSport racing and for Duke and Rhonda Thorson to be able to come out here and do this,” Enfinger told MRN Radio. “Locked in the Playoffs, so that’s good. Overall, we had a solid Champion Power Equipment F-150 all weekend really. Just not a race winning truck, but I think if we could have had some track position, we could have held him off. That’s about all we had.”

Matt Crafton, who is also a two-time champion, had a difficult day having to deal with a plug wire issue that came off after Stage 2 was done. However, the No. 88 Menards team was able to rebound to fifth. It was Crafton’s fourth top-five of the season but he was looking for a little more and was not satisfied with a top five.

“No not at all,” Crafton told MRN Radio describing his finish. “Just very aggravated with it, to be honest. It’s a damn shame that a plug wire came off, motor problems two races in a row in these things. Just keep digging us out of a hole. It’s good for these guys who work so hard, but I know this Menards Ford F-150 is better than that. I’m super excited for Johnny Sauter and everybody there, everybody at ThorSport. But at the end of the day, I know we could have been racing for the win.”

  • Johnny Sauter goes three in a row a Dover

Johnny Sauter goes three in a row a Dover

Two-time Truck Series champion Johnny Sauter finally scored a win in the 2019 Truck Series season after starting second and taking the lead with 31 to go. However, it didn’t quite look that way earlier in the race as the Wisconsin driver had an ignition issue after trying to save fuel.

“Well I was trying to figure out why it (truck) wouldn’t start,” Sauter told MRN Radio. “I looked at the ignition switch right away and it was up, I just couldn’t get it to fire. I played with the switch on the steering wheel, killswitch and that didn’t do anything, so I thought what the hell? We’ll try to get it running. I just can’t thank all of these guys enough at ThorSport Racing. Our Ford F-150 was awesome. Tenda Heel, Joe and all of these guys at ThorSport, this was a big win. Three in a row at a place like this, that’s saying something. I can remember being in the lounge yesterday before the start of practice and I saw the victory lane hat bag, and I thought, hell, why not? Just can’t thank Duke and Rhonda (Thorson) enough. A couple of months ago didn’t know if we’d be here racing, so it’s pretty special.”

The race sure didn’t start out that way. Moffitt sat on the pole and completly dominated Stage 1 with very little incident. It was Moffitt’s first stage win of the year and there were only 17 trucks on the lead lap.

During the pit stops, however, there were some penalties handed out. Tyler Ankrum (uncontrolled tire), Todd Gilliland (too fast), Derek Kraus (safety violation), and Joe Nemechek (too fast).

Stage 2 was when we saw Sauter out front, as he took the lead on Lap 81 after Moffitt encountered lap traffic which allowed Sauter to go on by.

Not much else happened in that stage and Sauter went on to win Stage 2. However, his ThorSport teammate Matt Crafton had a different story, as he was a facing a plug wire that fell off but it was eventually fixed. The ignition issue came into play for Sauter as well.

With 102 to go for the restart in Stage 3, ARCA champion, Sheldon Creed, took the lead. There were some incidents that took place in this stage.

Jesse Little had a flat right rear tire off Turn 4 and barely lost it. A caution flew on lap 110 with 90 to go for Korbin Forrister who wrecked on the frontstretch.

There was a breathtaking moment with 83 to go on the restart, as Moffitt, Creed and Harrison Burton made it three wide for first. However, Creed came out on top and retained his lead.

Jesse Little’s day went from bad to worse, as he suffered a broken track bar and was done for the day.

With many drivers short on fuel should a caution not come out for the rest of the race, the drivers were able to catch a break when the caution came out with 47 to go for Austin Wayne Self who wrecked off Turn 4.

On the restart with 41 to go, another caution broke out when Sheldon Creed wrecked on the backstretch after getting loose and collecting Todd Gilliland who got through, but suffered damage.

A late race caution came with 10 to go for Brennan Poole, but even with the late caution, nobody could touch Sauter and he went on to win his third consecutive race at Dover, thus becoming the first driver to do so.

Despite his ignition issue early on, the No. 13 ThorSport Racing driver explained how special this win was for him.

“Well I knew after Atlanta we were going to be able to race for wins,” Sauter continued in his post-race interview with MRN Radio. “At Martinsville, we had the truck to beat and it went away from us. People like Duke and Rhonda (Thorson) are gold. You don’t encounter too many people like that throughout your life. You know when we first had the conservation, I didn’t know how it was going to go, honestly. Like I said, you don’t encounter people like that very often. All of these guys, I worked with a lot of these guys with ThorSport in the past, some of them are new, youthful a lot of them and got some experience on the team as well. Just hats off to everyone at ThorSport Racing, fab shop, finish fab, it’s a team effort. These races are won during the week, not during the weekend and that showed today.”

Sauter led twice for 43 laps and became the first driver in the Truck Series to win three in a row at Dover.

There were 12 lead changes among six drivers.

  • Runner-up finish for Brett Moffitt and No. 24 GMS Racing Team

Runner-up finish for Brett Moffitt and No. 24 GMS Racing Team

Could’ve, would’ve, should’ve for Brett Moffitt and the No. 24 GMS Racing Team.

Moffitt and company got off on the right foot Friday afternoon, as the No. 24 Team sat on the pole. He completely dominated Stage 1 and won his first stage of the year. Moffitt lost the lead in Stage 2, but still had a great stage as he finished third.

He was back up front with 83 to go, as a hold your breath moment took place on the restart as Moffitt, Harrison Burton and teammate Sheldon Creed went three wide for the top spot.

Unfournately, Moffitt didn’t come out on the top spot, but was still running near the front.

He remained strong throughout the race running in the top-10. Late in the going, he tried everything he could to catch eventual race winner Johnny Sauter, but had to settle for a second place finish.

“Track position,” Moffitt said to MRN Radio when describing how tough it was to catch Sauter. “You’re not going to beat the guy on the top, restarting on the bottom there and you are in a vulnerable position. I was lucky to hang on to second. I saw the 98 (Grant Enfinger) get a bad restart and I was able to get in line and try to go after Johnny (Sauter), but clean air here is big at Dover. We weren’t catching a big group of lap cars or anything, just a clean air thing.

Dirty air came into effect when it came to Moffitt’s chances of catching Johnny Sauter for the race win and Moffitt describes why it was so key to be out front.

“When this place rubbers in, it gets pretty slick,” Moffitt continued. “And then you’re within five car lengths of somebody, it magnifies that. All in all, I’m disappointed since we’ve had really good trucks all year and I thought today was going to be our day, but it just wasn’t. A stage win and second is good for our ISM Connect Chevy Silverado, and we’ll go on to Kansas to try and win.”

  • NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Preview-Dover

NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series Preview-Dover

The NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series returns to action this weekend at Dover International Speedway, popularly known as the “Monster Mile,” after well over a month off from action. The last time the Trucks were last seen was at Texas Motor Speedway in March, when all-time wins leader Kyle Busch got four in a row to extend his winning streak.

This time, however, Busch will not be competing at Dover this weekend, as the next time he’ll be in a Truck will be Charlotte in middle May. Despite Busch not being able to compete this weekend, the Truck Series normally action packed on any given race weekend.

Last time the Truck Series visited Dover saw a thrilling finish between Johnny Sauter and now Xfinity Series driver Noah Gragson battle it out for the win. In the remaining laps, Noah made a divebomb move to try and pass Sauter for the win, but couldn’t make the Truck stick and ended up wrecking out of the race, thus seeing the race ending under caution.

When the entry list came out earlier this week, there were 35 trucks entered but the No. 04 of Roper Racing with Cory Roper withdrew Wednesday due to the lack of funding. The No. 1 (Travis Kvapil) and No. 43 (Anthony Mrakovich) also withdrew Thursday, leaving a total of 32 entries for the JEGS 200. In other notables, this weekend will see the return of Austin Wayne Self to his family-owned team to the No. 22 of AM Racing. Self violated NASCAR’s substance policy earlier this year but has since been reinstated as of this week.

With the Truck Series back racing this weekend, here are five drivers that might get it done in the JEGS 200.

    1. Johnny Sauter – You really can’t go to a race without having Sauter as a contender for the win. Surprisingly enough, he does not have a win yet in 2019 but Sauter is the defending Dover race winner. In 10 starts at Dover, he has two wins, two top fives and seven top-10 finishes with an average finish of 8.0. Sauter also won here in 2017 making it two consecutive wins when he visited victory lane here last spring. He has 170 laps led in total and zero DNFs but that was with GMS Racing when Sauter visited victory lane. What about his time with ThorSport Racing? The last time Sauter and company raced with each other was back in 2015 where he finished ninth. Other finishes include fifth in 2009, 15th in 2010, 11th in 2011, 24th in 2012, seventh in 2013, and third in 2014. Sauter turned 41-years-young this past week and what a birthday present it would be if he could get to victory lane Friday night.
    2. Todd Gilliland – Gilliland only has two starts at Dover with one top-10 finish coming in last year’s race where he finished 10th. However, Gilliland kept himself busy during the off week by winning the ARCA race at Talladega last weekend. It was a little sigh of relief after facing so much pressure to perform this season in the Truck Series. Gilliland is determined to get to victory lane this weekend and put the critics’ comments aside once more. Momentum is everything in this sport, so don’t be surprised if he wheels the No. 4 Kyle Busch Motorsports entry into victory lane at Dover. The No. 4 KBM team will be using chassis KBM-045. The chassis has 10 starts and one win at Chicagoland Speedway in 2016 with owner-driver Kyle Busch behind the wheel.
    3. Ben Rhodes- Rhodes could be an upset winner this weekend at Dover. He may not have the best results statistically but he has improved his finishes the last two times the Trucks visited there. His first two outings did not fare well for the Kentucky native with finishes of 22nd and 28th but he finished fourth in 2017 and eighth in 2018. In last year’s race, Rhodes finished sixth in both stages. He has an average finish of 15.5 with 71 laps led. Rhodes will continue to look to improve his finish by going to victory lane this Friday.
    4. Brandon Jones – Jones will be back in the No. 51 KBM entry at Dover this weekend. Jones could very well end up in victory lane and it wouldn’t be shocking. He has competed at Dover in the Truck Series since 2014 and aside from the 2016 race (where Jones finished 20th), he has finished inside the top-10 in most of his starts at the “Monster Mile.” Jones’ best finish in a Truck at Dover is fourth in 2014. He did not compete in last year’s race but made five starts for KBM in 2018 with a best finish of third at Charlotte.
    5. Stewart Friesen – Despite Friesen not finishing the last two Dover races, he has been solid in 2019 and is currently the Truck Series points leader. So far this year, the No. 52 Halmar Racing driver has three top fives and four top-10 finishes with one pole. Friesen’s best finish this year is second at Texas. He’ll be looking forward to putting the Dover slump behind him.

The Truck Series has competed at Dover over the past 19 years since 2000. Current Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Kurt Busch won the first outing here in 2000. The first back-to-back winner was Kyle Busch from 2013-2014. Johnny Sauter is the most recent back-to-back winner here at Dover. No driver has ever won three in a row.

The race winners is a list of who’s who ranging from Scott Riggs, Ted Musgrave, Jason Leffler, Chad Chaffin, Mark Martin, Scott Speed, Brian Scott, Aric Almirola, Todd Bodine, Tyler Reddick to Matt Crafton.

Kyle Busch has the most wins at the track with four. However, as previously noted, will not be racing this weekend in the Truck Series.

First time winner? The Truck Series at Dover have produced 15 different winners.

The race winner has come from the pole only three times with the most recent taking place in 2014 set by, none other than Kyle Busch. The lowest a winner has ever come from to win was 15th and was set by NASCAR Hall of Famer Ron Hornaday in 2007.

The Truck Series takes to the track on Thursday afternoon with two practice sessions. The first practice will take place at 2:05 p.m. ET and final practice at 4:05 p.m. ET with no live TV coverage.

Trucks will qualify on Friday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. ET live on NASCAR.com.

The JEGS 200 is slated to get underway a little past 5 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 and MRN Radio.

  • Harvick finishes sixth after dominant drive at Dover

Harvick finishes sixth after dominant drive at Dover

Kevin Harvick wore his signature shades and sarcastic smile, on pit road after the race. He was disappointed that a dominant victory slipped away, and a good points day didn’t make it better.

“I don’t care about points. I’d rather win.”

It was Harvick’s race to lose, and he found a way to lose it.

In the midst of a woodshed whooping, Harvick pitted from the lead with 80 laps to go. He pitted again a lap later with a loose wheel, caused by a lug nut knocking off the valve stem to his right-front tire. He returned to the race a lap down.

“I can’t control where the lug nuts fly. Our Busch Beer Ford was really fast, and that’s about it.”

A caution got Harvick back on the lead lap. He avoided the multi-car pileup on the backstretch with three laps to go.

“Yeah, we were just lucky there. We were dodging and weaving and being in the right place. I guess that makes up for the bad luck on losing the race with a dominant car.”

His charge through the field stalled out at sixth, where his day ended.

He took command of the race on the 16th lap. Aside from a few laps during two green flag pit cycles and Joey Logano beating him off pit road under the first caution, it was his to lose.

Harvick led a total of 251 laps and swept the stages.

He leaves Dover with the points lead.
