    Driver Analysis: Jason Hathaway

    With the 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season over. It gives us time to analyze some drivers and see how they did throughout the year.

    There were several rookies that made their first start this season. One of them being Appin, Ontario Canada driver, Jason Hathaway.

    Before making his career debut at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park for the truck series, Hathaway made several series starts in the Canadian Association for Stock Car Auto Racing and the NASCAR Pinty Series with selective starts in the K&N Pro Series East.

    When he made his Truck Series debut at Bowmanville, Hathaway started 22nd and finished 15th. In that race, he ran as high as 14th and as low as 29th, which gave him a total of 41.4 percent quality passes. Not bad for making your first start, especially at the challenging race track.

    Hathaway’s best finish of the year came at Phoenix International Raceway driving for Jay Robinson. After three crazy wrecks and red flags, this saw him getting a potential top 10 finish. However, he was relegated to an 11th place finish at the 1-mile racetrack.

    “We had a great run tonight at PIR. Having an opportunity to run at this fun oval was a dream come true,” Hathaway said after the race. “The NASCAR Truck series is so much fun and the competitors are great to race with. Thanks to Kubota for all they did to get us here. It meant the world to us to have their support.”

    Needless to say, Hathaway had a solid 2017 season by only making two starts. Nothing is set in stone yet for the 41-year-old in 2018, but it would be great to see him back in the Truck Series.

    Four Takeaways From The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Race At Phoenix

    The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series raced in the mid-west this past Friday night at Phoenix International Raceway. It was an action-packed race that did not disappoint.

    Here are four takeaways from the Lucas Oil 150.

    1. Chase Briscoe Earns A Top Five Finish – With a strong F-150, Briscoe was able to earn a top-five finish at Phoenix International Raceway. He did not place in the top 10 at all in both stages, but, after all the melee was over and adjustments made to the truck by the pit crew, he wound up fourth on the pylon at the end of the night. It was his ninth top-five finish of the year.
    2. Todd Gilliland Has Another Strong Finish – In his rookie season in the truck series, Gilliland has been finishing inside the top 10 for the most part. Despite not finishing at Dover and Gateway, he seems to have found his groove. Before Phoenix, Gilliland placed 11th at Bowmanville, third at Loudon, fifth at Martinsville and recently finished seventh at Phoenix. He started fifth and placed eighth in both stages. When the night was all said and done, Gilliland finished seventh thus earning a spot in the truck series owner’s championship that will conclude Friday night at Homestead-Miami.
    3. Bayley Currey and Jason Hathaway Have Strong Runs – Expect the unexpected was used this past weekend at Phoenix. Currey and Hathaway only made one previous start, placing 25th and 15th, respectively. But after all the carnage was over with, these two rookies earned the best finish of their career thus far.
    4. Robby Lyons Gets 12th Place Finish In Debut – The Seminole, Florida driver made his first Truck Series debut at Phoenix International Raceway. Previously, Lyons only made starts in the CARS Super Late Model Tour making only four starts in two years. He collected a 12th place finish in his career debut. Not bad in your first career start.

    NCAT: Frustrations Take Over Barrie Speedway, Penalties Handed Down

    NASCAR announced that two NASCAR Canadian Tire Series drivers and three crew members have been penalized as a result of rules violated at Barrie Speedway on September 10thafter racing was over.

    J.R. Fitzpatrick and Kerry Micks were found in violation of Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock-car racing – aggressive driving and excessive speed on pit road after the race) of the 2011 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series rule book.  They are both on probation for the final two races of schedule and remain on probation till September 28, 2011. Both drivers sped down pit road after an on-track altercation on the final lap where Micks spun out Fitzpatrick due to earlier contact.

    Matt Vanderwal, crew chief for Don Thomson Jr. was found in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock-car racing – involved in an altercation (fighting) in another competitor’s pit area) and 9-4 (the crew chief assumes responsibility for the actions of his team members). Vanderwal has been fined $500, suspended from the final two races and placed on probation until December 31, 2011.

    Josh Turner, crew member for No. 3 of Jason Hathaway, and Chad Turner, crew member for Don Thomson Jr., were both found in violation of Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock-car racing – involved in an altercation (fighting) in another competitor’s pit area).     The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series returns to the track this weekend for the Komatsu 300 presented by Wilson Equipment at Riverside International Speedway in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.

  • NCTS: Mark Dilley Comes Out Victorious After Last Lap Incident in Wild Wing 300

    Short tracks always seem to bring close racing and the Wild Wing 300 presented by Independent Electric Saturday night at Barrie Speedway for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series was no exception as there would be contact with the leaders in the final laps.

    On the green-white-checkered restart, Kerry Micks and JR Fitzpatrick would start side-by-side. With history being on their side with past incidents between them, the eventual contact of Micks spinning Fitzpatrick around was no surprise.

    Though amidst the smoke, Mark Dilley would find his way past both Mick sand Fitzpatrick to score his third career victory.

    “I just thought I’d stay as close as I could to everybody and that way by the time they went, I would go through,” he said. “They just tapped just going down in 1 there and I just seen smoke and I just turned left as hard as I could and floored it and we got lucky.”

    Dilley had qualified the car in the seventh position, though ended up starting at the back of the 22 car field to start the race. This mark’s Dilley’s first win since Cayuga Motor Speedway in 2008.

    “Its good to win in your hometown and all that,” he said in victory lane. “Barrie Speedway has been good to me obviously over the years with the racing. It was just a good race. The guys did a great job on the pit stops. We had to go to the back at the beginning and I just tried to keep my head and not knock the wheels off it and it just worked out good.

    “I can’t thank Rheem, PartSource, all the sponsors enough. They make it possible. They’ve been sticking with us through thick and thin so I mean this one’s all for them.”

    Jason Hathaway would grab second and Kerry Micks would end up third at the end of it all.

    “We started 12th and tried to be real calm coming through and I think we did a real good job there,” Micks said afterwards. “We got all the way up to the lead there without too much damage to anything or anybody. J.R. goes through my spotter and says, ‘Let’s just have a nice clean race here’ and I said, ‘Okay. That sounds good to me.’

    “And we go into the second corner and he puts me completely sideways and you know that’s just not right. When you got your man’s word to say something like that and I said okay, and just didn’t happen. He put me sideways and I said, ‘I’m not taking that’.

    “Then we’re going down the front straightaway and he puts me in the front wall. I’m passing him on the outside and he puts in the wall. I said, ‘What are you thinking?’

    “Anyways, I don’t want to race that and its just too bad, but I don’t take any…..”

    Don Thomson Jr. would come home fourth followed by Jeff Lapcevich, Brad Graham, DJ Kennington, Joey McColm, Fitzpatrick and Chris Raabe. Kennington would rally back to a seventh place finish after spinning to bring out the final caution of the evening.

    Meanwhile Kennington’s points rival and the pole sitter, Scott Steckly, would lead 147 laps before having a wheel issue, which caused him to finish 15th. Steckly now leads Kennington by 69 points with two races remaining.

    The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series will be back in action next weekend on September 17th with the Komatsu 300 presented by Wilson Equipment at Riverside International Speedway.

  • Canadian Tire Series: Don Thomson Jr. To Run For Ed Hakonson in 2011

    Team 3 Red/Ed Hakonson Racing announced that Don Thomson Jr. would be joining their team. According to team officials, the new deal will allow for some great opportunities for Thomson with his wealth of knowledge, driving ability and experience as a seven-time Canadian stock-car champion.

    “The group at Team 3 Red/EHR is a great group of guys and I am looking forward to working with Jason and the rest of the company,” said Thomson in the team’s press release. “This move puts me in a great position, opens doors for me and I am excited to be a part of the plan for T3R/EHR in 2011.”

    “Don has a great history of being a superb contender in racing here in Canada,” team owner Ed Hakonson said. “We are looking forward to the new opportunities that lie ahead for Don and our team in the coming season. His knowledge and ability is unmatched in the industry and we are proud to have him a part of our organization.”

    In 51 career NASCAR Canadian Tire Series starts Thomson has six wins, 27 top-five and 38 top-10 finishes. He also holds the series record with 11 career poles. Thomson spent last year at Fitzpatrick Motorsports, finishing fourth in points with one win, nine top fives and 11 top 10s in 13 starts. Thomson and Fitzpatrick Motorsports split ways at the end of the 2010 season as a result of Fitzpatrick Motorsports changing their team outlook.

    “Fitzpatrick Motorsports was originally founded for (team-owner) John to have some fun,” JR’s business partner, Jason Sharpe, told Inside Track Magazine. “When John became involved with the CASCAR Super Series, he wanted to bring the level up in shop, to turn it into a professional operation, and that’s when Don Thomson came on board.

    “The most recent objective of this team has been to develop J.R.’s career. We’ve enjoyed our time in the CASCAR and the Canadian Tire Series, but it’s time to put all of our resources behind J.R. and go to the States. We’ve developed relationships with JR Motorsports and Harvick Motorsports, we’ve put the pieces in place, now we need to make the move south.”

    “It’s the right time to go there,” Fitzpatrick told Inside Track. “I’m not saying we won’t run in the Canadian Tire Series next year, we’re not shutting down the Canadian side, but we’ve got nothing left to prove here. We’ve been in talks with a lot of different teams and we’re working hard on finalizing our sponsorship package. Nationwide is the goal for 2011.”

    “We had a great 13-year run with Fitzpatrick Motorsports,” Thomson said. “We parted on good terms, we’re just going in different directions. I’m 48 years old and been doing this a long time. I believe I can still get the job done behind the wheel, but to be successful, it requires ’24/7′ dedication.”

    Thomson’s new teammate Jason Hathaway says he looks forward to working with Thomson.

    “Donnie and I have always respected each other on and off the track so I am excited that he has joined our team,” Hathaway said. “His knowledge and our joint efforts will help our organization on a number of levels.”
