    Truex Nabs the Pole at Martinsville

    MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Martin Truex Jr. will lead the field to the green flag on Sunday afternoon after posting the fastest time in the final round of qualifying.

    The driver of the No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota scored the pole for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 after posting a time of 19.282 and a speed of 98.206 mph.

    “I’m feeling good, it’s definitely a good day,” Truex said on getting the pole. “It’s fun to be back at the race track with some positive things happening. First pole here at Martinsville so it feels good, it’s a cool accomplishment and this track is so difficult and so tough. The history here and it’s just a place that everybody wants to be good at. Really proud of my guys after the week we had last week. Obviously to come here, perform and get it done – I’m excited to see what we can do the rest of the weekend.”

    It’s his 12th pole in 402 career Sprint Cup Series starts, his fifth of the season and first in 22 starts at Martinsville Speedway.

    Joey Logano will start second in his No. 22 Team Penske Ford after posting a time of 19.290 and a speed of 98.165 mph. Jimmie Johnson will start third in his No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet after posting a time of 19.354 and a speed of 97.840 mph. AJ Allmendinger will start fourth in his No. 47 JTG Daugherty Racing Chevrolet after posting a time of 19.376 and a speed of 97.729 mph. Chase Elliott will round out the top-five in his No. 24 HMS Chevrolet after posting a time of 19.382 and a speed of 97.699 mph.

    Tony Stewart will start sixth in his No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet. Carl Edwards will start seventh in his No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Denny Hamlin will start eighth in his No. 11 JGR Toyota. Kyle Busch will start ninth in his No. 18 JGR Toyota. Jeff Gordon will round out the top-10 in his No. 88 HMS Chevrolet.

    His 10th place qualifying effort snaps a 23-year streak with at least one pole in a season.

    Kyle Larson will start 11th and David Ragan will round out the 12 drivers that made the final round of qualifying.

    Matt Kenseth will start 17th, Kevin Harvick will start 20th and Kurt Busch is the lowest starting Chase driver in 23rd.

    Ricky Stenhouse Jr. wheel-hopped going into turn 1, spun around and hit the wall with his left-rear corner. The damage prompted the team to roll out their backup car. As a result, he’ll start from the rear of the field on Sunday.

    “I had a lot of wheel-hop,” Stenhouse said on what happened. “It was definitely not ideal in qualifying, but you’re always pressing the issue to try to qualify better and trying to get everything out of the car that you can and it just started wheel-hopping. As a lot of us drivers know, once it starts wheel-hopping it’s hard to save. I down-shifted to try and keep it out of the wall as best I could, but we weren’t able to do that. We’ll get this Fastenal back-up out and get to work on it tonight and make sure that we have it ready to go for practice tomorrow.”

    With 40 cars entered, none were sent home.

    In total, 21 Chevrolet’s, 11 Ford’s and eight Toyota’s will comprise the 40-car field in Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500.

    MARTINSVILLE, Va. — William Byron topped the chart in final Camping World Truck Series practice at Martinsville Speedway.

    The driver of the No. 9 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota was the fastest in the final practice session with a time of 19.687 and a speed of 96.185 mph. Johnny Sauter was second in his No. 21 GMS Racing Chevrolet with a time of 19.749 and a speed of 95.883 mph. Daniel Suarez was third in his No. 51 KBM Toyota with a time of 19.757 and a speed of 95.845 mph. Cole Custer was fourth in his No. 00 JR Motorsports Chevrolet with a time of 19.765 and a speed of 95.806 mph. Tyler Reddick rounded out the top-five in his No. 29 Brad Keselowski Racing Ford with a time of 19.799 and a speed of 95.641 mph.

    Ben Rhodes was sixth in his No. 41 ThorSport Racing Toyota. John Hunter Nemechek was seventh in his No. 8 NEMCO Motorsports Chevrolet. Spencer Gallagher was eighth in his No. 23 GMS Chevrolet. Daniel Hemric was ninth in his No. 19 BKR Ford. Christopher Bell rounded out the top-10 in his No. 19 KBM Toyota.

    Ben Kennedy was 11th, Matt Crafton was 12th and Timothy Peters was the lowest Chase driver in 15th.

    Cameron Hayley posted the fastest 10 consecutive lap average at an average speed of 93.710 mph.

    Logano on New Rule Limiting Number of Starts for Cup Drivers in XFINITY and Truck

    MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Joey Logano gave his take on the new rule limiting Cup participation in the lower tier national touring series in the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing while speaking to the media at Martinsville.

    During his media availability this morning prior to first Sprint Cup Series practice, the driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford talked about NASCAR implementing a new policy starting in 2017 curtailing the number of starts a Cup driver can make in the XFINITY Series and Camping World Truck Series, and how it would affect his organization’s operations in the XFINITY Series.

    “It affects them a lot. It affects the sport a lot,” Logano said. “As a race car driver, I want to race all the time, so if I put my race car driver hat on I think, ‘Man, this kind of stinks,’ because I want to drive. But I think when you kind of take that hat off and look at it from more of a global view I understand it.”

    NASCAR instituted a new policy on Wednesday that starting in 2017, limits Sprint Cup Series drivers with five or more years of experience at the highest level to 10 races a season in the XFINITY Series and seven in the Camping World Truck Series. Those Cup drivers won’t be allowed to take part in the four XFINITY Dash 4 Cash races next season or in the last eight races of either the XFINITY or Truck Series.

    The rule doesn’t apply to drivers with less than five years experience in Cup, such as Austin Dillon and Kyle Larson, or drivers with five or more years experience in Cup who are declared to run for points in either the XFINITY Series or Truck Series, such as Elliott Sadler.

    While this has largely been positively received by fans, it’s been a mixed bag amongst drivers.

    “I get why we’re doing that. I think it’s important to have Cup racers out there because I think growing up as a young race car driver I learned that you only get better when you’re racing against people that are better than you, and I think this has the ability to give young drivers that and young crew chiefs coming up through the XFINITY Series,” he said giving one of the common arguments by proponents for allowing Cup drivers in XFINITY and Truck competition.

    “I think it gives them the ability to work with Cup drivers and things like that, so I think that’s good that they have that mix in there, but at the same time you also want to have the opportunity for young drivers to get into the seat and drive it at some point. I get that. If you look at it from the business end, it’s no secret that a lot of sponsors want to have the big-name drivers in there. They want to have Sprint Cup racers that can go out there and are proven winners, so that’s definitely gonna change the game quite a bit from the business side of our sport.”

    MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Daniel Suarez topped the chart in first Camping World Truck Series practice at Martinsville Speedway.

    The driver of the No. 51 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota was the fastest in the first practice session with a time of 19.823 and a speed of 95.525 mph. Cameron Hayley was second in his No. 13 ThorSport Racing Toyota with a time of 19.835 and a speed of 95.468 mph. William Byron was third in his No. 9 KBM Toyota with a time of 19.848 and a speed of 95.405 mph. Matt Crafton was fourth in his No. 88 TSR Toyota with a time of 19.914 and a speed of 95.089 mph. John Hunter Nemechek rounded out the top-five in his No. 8 NEMCO Motorsports Chevrolet with a time of 19.963 and a speed of 94.856 mph.

    Johnny Sauter was sixth in his No. 21 GMS Racing Chevrolet. Harrison Burton was seventh in his No. 18 KBM Toyota. Christopher Bell was eighth in his No. 4 KBM Toyota. Ben Rhodes was ninth in his No. 41 TSR Toyota. Kay Grala rounded out the top-10 in his No. 24 GMS Chevrolet.

    Ben Kennedy was 17th and Timothy Peters was the lowest Chase driver in 20th.

    Matt Tifft posted the fastest 10 consecutive lap average at an average speed of 93.283 mph.

    The Truck Series is back on track at 2:30 p.m.

    MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Kyle Larson topped the chart in first Sprint Cup Series practice at Martinsville Speedway.

    The driver of the No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet was the fastest in the first practice session with a time of 19.289 and a speed of 98.170 mph. Denny Hamlin was second in his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota with a time of 19.311 and a speed of 98.058 mph. Joey Logano was third in his No. 22 Team Penske Ford with a time of 19.312 and a speed of 98.053 mph. Chase Elliott was fourth in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet with a time of 19.321 and a speed of 98.007 mph. Danica Patrick rounded out the top-five in her No. 10 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet with a time of 19.328 and a speed of 97.972 mph.

    Hot 20 – NASCAR’s Cup Drivers Runneth over to Swamp the XFINITY and Camping World Series

    Bless NASCAR’s pea-pickin’ hearts. You have to admit that they keep on trying. With both the junior and truck circuits pretty much irrelevant these days due to the inclusion and the total domination of Cup drivers, NASCAR once again is trying to do the right thing.

    Cup drivers are already banned from the season finales in both minor leagues. Now those with five years Cup experience, not registered to drive for points, can not race in any of those other versions of the Chase, their regular season finales, or the XFINITY “Dash 4 Cash” events. Still, that leaves Cup drivers eligible to race in 10 of the remaining 21 junior races, along with seven of the remaining 15 truck races.

    That means that instead of racing 16 junior contests and winning nine, defending Cup champion Kyle Busch gets to start only 10 times next year. Then he could turn the seat over to, say, Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin to fill in for the other 11 rides available. Cup drivers could still dominate for much of the season, though next year they would have to share those opportunities. It is a step forward, but we will have to see if it will be enough to return the spotlight on those who should be showcased in those divisions.

    In 29 events, regular XFINITY drivers claimed 11 of them. Erik Jones took four, Elliott Sadler three, Daniel Suarez a couple, with the others going to Justin Marks and Sam Hornish Jr. Eighteen went to Cup drivers, with half of that total taken by Busch, including their Chase race at Kansas. Chase Elliott and Kyle Larson have also won and, with less than five years Cup experience, the restrictions would not apply to either of them. Still, it beats doing nothing but will it be enough to stop the major leaguers from moonlighting to kick some minor league butt most weeks?

    This Sunday, the contenders and pretenders of the Cup circuit head to Martinsville, Virginia. A win earns a free pass to race for the title in Homestead next month. A wreck, and then Texas and Phoenix get a lot more stressful. Eight contenders, but only four will be in the running when it counts.

    Among our Hot 20, Kevin Harvick has been best over the course of the season. That means nothing come Sunday.

    Would have a 37 point lead if season-long points were still the determining factor…over Keselowski.

    2. DENNY HAMLIN – 4000 PTS
    If you see him in a photo with good friend Michael Jordan, Denny is the short one.

    Last year, he was the guy to beat coming out of Talladega…and so they did.

    The Outsider: Kenseth’s Struggles Continue

    If you would have told me that Matt Kenseth would have been winless headed into the ninth race of the season and on the outside looking into the playoffs, I would have called you crazy. But, that is the case, he currently sits 18th in points with just one top 10 finish this season.

    Last year at this time, Kenseth was sitting pretty with four top 10 finishes, one of those being a win at Bristol, which solidified his spot in NASCAR’s playoffs.

    So, what happened? It’s certainly not a team performance issue as Job Gibbs Racing has proven that it is one of the top teams in NASCAR, if not the top. Kyle Busch has won two races, Edwards captured a checkered flag at Bristol and Hamlin won the biggest race of the season, the Daytona 500. But, Kenseth can’t seem to put solid runs together. From an outside perspective, it looks as though he has a great relationship with his crew chief Jason Ratcliff, they’ve seen victory lane numerous times together, so what’s the issue?

    Here’s my take:

    Last season, Kenseth was the first driver in NASCAR history to receive a two-race suspension. The suspension followed his actions at Martinsville Speedway when he had a “tire go down” entering into turn one, where he then took out race leader Joey Logano.

    But, let’s flashback to a couple of weeks prior. Kenseth was leading at Kansas, Kenseth throws the block two times on Logano. Following that, Logano heads into turn one and races Kenseth hard into the corner, Kenseth gets spun out. That incident severely hurt Kenseth’s chance of advancing to the next round of the Chase.

    Next stop, Talladega. One of Kenseth’s last shots at advancing into the next round of the chase. Harvick causes mayhem on a final restart resulting in the field piling up, Kenseth is involved, therefore eliminating him from the next round of the chase.

    Following Talladega, the incident between Kenseth and Logano happened at Martinsville and Kenseth then gets suspended. He said he had a tire go down, but we all knew that it was retaliation stemming from Kansas. He felt Logano took something from him at Kansas, therefore, Kenseth took something from Logano at Martinsville, an eye for an eye, or as it’s called in NASCAR, “driver code.”

    This begs the question, could Kenseth’s slow start in 2016 all stem from his issues with Logano last season? Listen, Kenseth is a professional on and off the track, he’s a champion at NASCAR’s highest level and he’s one of the most respected drivers in the garage. However, he’s also human and whether he’d want to admit it or not, he might currently be having a hangover from last season’s incidents.

    Kenseth will find victory lane this season. This weekend at Richmond might be the perfect place for him to bounce back since he won there last season. But, for now, he’s on the outside looking into the playoffs.

    Surprising and Not Surprising: STP 500 at Martinsville

    Paperclips, hot dogs, and close racing. These are all the ingredients of another exciting Sprint Cup Series race at Martinsville Speedway, the oldest track in NASCAR. The 67th annual STP 500, the second oldest race in all of NASCAR, is in the books. Here is what was surprising and not surprising from Sunday’s event.

    Surprising: Kyle Busch finally won his first Sprint Cup race at Martinsville in his 22nd attempt. It’s his 35th Sprint Cup win and yet another weekend sweep as “Rowdy” had won the Camping World Truck Series race the day before.

    Busch, who is a month shy of his 31st birthday, has won 169 national touring series races (Cup, XFINITY, and Truck) in just 13 full time seasons. He is only 41 wins away from Richard Petty’s mark of 200, a record nobody thought could ever be broken. That being said, if Cup races were only being counted, Busch would need to win 165 more races to reach Petty’s 200; a near impossibility that would require Busch to go undefeated for nearly five seasons.

    Busch is also very close to becoming the first driver in NASCAR’s Modern Era (1972 on) to have won at every single track he has ever raced at in Sprint Cup. The only tracks he hasn’t won at are Kansas, Pocono, and Charlotte. He’s already won at both Kansas and Charlotte multiple times in XFINITY and Trucks as it is. The two closest to this mark, Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart, cannot achieve this as they never won at Rockingham Speedway when it was on the Sprint Cup calendar.

    Busch was proud of this diversity when he entered the media room following his win. But, of course, he wasn’t thinking just about Cup.

    “As far as being able to check off some more races, I checked off the truck series win yesterday,” said Busch.  “I never won here at Martinsville in the trucks.  I think I’ve concluded being able to win at all the active tracks that I’ve made a start in the truck series.  I believe that’s right.  And then I’ve got Watkins Glen left on the XFINITY side, and I’ve got I think three, Kansas, Pocono and somewhere — Charlotte.  Imagine that.

    So it’s a pretty good problem to have. There’s not very many left on the list, but we’ve certainly put some emphasis on that over the past few years and being able to try to do that last year was a big year for us, knocking off a couple of those, as well. I’m pumped when I’m able to do that. I don’t know that many guys have ever been able to accomplish being able to win at every single active track that they’ve made starts at, and I look forward to trying to complete that feat.”

    Even so, Busch isn’t thinking too much about old Cup records, even when asked if he could match David Pearson’s 105 mark.

    “Man, I thought I’d get that question when I was like 75 or wherever the hell Jimmie is at,” Busch responded. “Y’all just asked Jimmie if he could make it to 100, I think last week or two weeks ago.  We’ve got a long ways ahead of us.  Let’s get to 50 first; how about that?”

    Not surprising: There were more accidents at Martinsville than at any other races so far in this young season. It all started off when David Ragan got into the fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. just six laps into the 500 lap endurance race.

    “The No. 23 pushed up in the middle of the corner and just barely touched us and it cut the left-rear tire,” Earnhardt said following the race. He battled for much of the day to get back on the lead lap and ended up 14th after pitting on the last caution.

    Some of the other incidents included Brian Scott knocking Michael Annett into the wall, Regan Smith’s two wrecks, and shockingly, favorite Denny Hamlin.

    “It’s my first time ever doing it here, so it’s a little embarrassing, but I mean we were the fastest car those last 30 laps and we got back to the top-five and I was making up a lot of my speed on entry,” Hamlin said about his misfortune on lap 222. “As the tires wear, the rears get hotter, less grip, you can’t brake at the same amount and I, just – it was really out of the blue. I didn’t ever have a hint of it up until that moment, so a bit of a rookie move on my part – been around here too much to do something like that, but learning for the fall and I’m really encouraged about how good our car came up through the pack and I really thought we had a car that could win.”

    Surprising: AJ Allmendinger ended the day second after spending most of the race in the top 10. It matched his record finish at a NASCAR oval, another runner-up finish at Martinsville in 2012.

    It’s the Los Gatos, California native’s first top-five finish since his win at Watkins Glen in 2014.

    “Well, Brian Burns and Tony Palmer, my crew chief and race engineer last year, they were just at a bit of a disadvantage,” Allmendinger said, reflecting on what has changed since last season at JTG Daugherty. “We didn’t have the personnel to have the cars where we needed them when they left the race shop, exactly where they needed to be, getting put into the hauler and getting brought to the racetrack. Ernie (new competition director, Cope) is really good.  He’s had a relationship with RCR working there, and obviously, when he worked with Kevin Harvick and they had the truck and Busch teams at the time.  So he’s been really good about making sure we got what we need for the race cars and built the way they need to be to the specs that he wants them and things like that, and Randall, for a first-year crew chief, you wouldn’t really know it.  He’s great on the box.  He calms me, which shockingly I don’t know if you guys know that, I probably need that sometimes.

    It doesn’t seem like he’s only done this for six races. They’ve brought a lot, but it’s not just about those guys. Brian Burns and Tony Palmer, they stepped back into new roles and instead of feeling like they were downsized or demoted they’ve stepped up and embraced it.”

    Kyle Larson, who ended the day third, had run top five all day before moving up on the final restart.

    “Yeah, it was a solid weekend for myself, also,” Larson said, referring to his start in the truck race the day before.  “I was able to do double duty this week, and I think that definitely helped me get my rhythm early in the weekend and better myself each time I was on the track.

    Our car was way better than it has been here in the past. I felt like I learned a lot throughout that race. I was able to run behind great drivers here, AJ, Jimmie (Johnson) Kevin (Harvick), Kurt (Busch), (Brad) Keselowski, there was a lot of people that I could learn off of.  You know, this was — in the past it’s been my worst racetrack on the schedule, so to get a top-three finish here feels great, feels like a win, to be honest, and hopefully, this is a good momentum shift that we need. We’ve been struggling all year long so far and been working hard, but it hasn’t paid off.”

    Not surprising: Change the cars, change the tires, change the point system. The one constant in NASCAR, outside of Kevin Harvick winning at Phoenix, is that restarting on the outside line at Martinsville is not a good thing.

    Matt Kenseth and Harvick, after being up front almost the entire day, struggled to 15th and 17th respectively after being on the outside line on the last restart.

    It has been the story of the year for Kenseth. He has been fast every week but outside of a seventh at Phoenix has always faded back by the time the checkered flag waves.

    “Yeah, we had a great Dollar General Toyota today,” Kenseth said following the race. “We’ve had fast cars this year, but got shuffled to the back, so disappointing ending but it was an encouraging day. We ran really well, had great pit stops and they gave me fast cars. Hopefully, we’ll start getting some finishes soon.”

    Harvick did not speak to the media following the race.

    Surprising: Austin Dillon, at a track where he had a best finish of 12th going in, ended the day a strong fourth after a back and fourth battle between himself and teammate Paul Menard in the latter stages of the race.

    It has been a career year for the Richard Childress Racing driver, who has an average finish of 10.3 and has doubled his career number of top fives. He currently sits eighth in points. Dillon, however, puts most of the credit on his crew at RCR.

    “We just keep getting better every week,” Dillon said. “I didn’t like myself last year. I didn’t like who I was for the team. I was frustrated and I wanted to be better for these guys. When they step-up, they make me better. I’m trying to be different, but I’m not doing a lot of different stuff. They’re just building me a lot better race cars. Everybody back at the shop putting all those 80-hour weeks in, I hope you understand how important it is because you’re making it happen. I wish we had one more spot, but that was pretty darn cool.”

    Not surprising: Brad Keselowski has never won at Martinsville but has always been very consistent, with seven top 10s in 13 starts at “the Paperclip”.

    This didn’t change on Sunday when the driver of the No. 2 Miller Lite Ford finished fifth.

    “It was a good Martinsville race,” the 2012 Sprint Cup champion said. “We had a lot of speed with the Miller Lite Ford on the long runs, but just not quite enough on the short runs to make anything of the Gibbs cars. They were really strong all day. All in all, I’m real proud of my team. We’re starting to get to this place where we’re real consistent and can run up front and that’s a good feeling.”

    Next week, it’s the first night race of the season at the Texas Motor Speedway. Tune in Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. EST for the Duck Commander 500.

    Kyle Larson Captures Season Best Third Place at Martinsville

    Kyle Larson drove his Chip Ganassi Racing No. 42 Target Chevrolet to a third place finish in the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway, earning his best result of the season. It’s a track where Larson has struggled in the past which made this top five even sweeter.

    His four previous starts at Martinsville resulted in finishes of 42nd, 27th, 30th and 19th.

    “It was really fun this whole weekend to be competitive every time I was on the race track. Normally, I’m very bad here and to finish top three feels like a win for me. Never would I have thought that I’d get a top three here and now I can kind of see a (Grandfather) clock, maybe in my future,” Larson said post race.

    “We were running in the top five and top seven the whole race. I learned a lot,” he continued. “I spent a lot of time behind Jimmie Johnson and I felt like I just followed his track there and got a lot better throughout the race. Chad (Johnson, crew chief) did a good job taking two tires there at the end, we got lined-up on the inside row and we were pretty good there. So, hat’s off to everybody on this Target Chevy and it was cool to get a good finish.”

    Larson also ran in the Camping World Truck Series event this weekend, where he finished fourth. He talked about the advantage of competing in both races and the importance of seat time.

    “Normally, a truck does not drive anything like a Cup car, and this is the only racetrack probably where it does,” he explained, “just getting more laps on this racetrack is the most important part for myself.  In the past, I’ve always struggled with just hitting my marks lap after lap, and I think getting almost twice the amount of laps here this weekend as I normally would here, just helped me become smoother and more patient and maybe get an idea of what I need to feel like going around the racetrack.”

    I definitely think it paid off,” he added. “Hopefully, the next Martinsville I can run both again. I think it helped a lot, and hopefully, it’s something I can do from here on out for a while until I feel like I’m good enough where I don’t need to run it.”

    Larson’s 2016 season has a rollercoaster of highs and lows but he hopes to use his success at Martinsville as motivation going forward.

    “In the past,” Larson said, “it’s (Martinsville) been my worst racetrack on the schedule, so to get a top‑three finish here feels great, feels like a win, to be honest, and hopefully, this is a good momentum shift that we need. We’ve been struggling all year long so far and been working hard, but it hasn’t paid off.”

    The Sprint Cup Series heads to Texas Motor Speedway next week where Larson will try to capitalize on his success at Martinsville as he looks for another “solid finish.”
