One Man’s Journey from Tragedy to Inspiration

Our lives are often shaped by tragedy that forces us to look within for answers. Author John Green wrote, “Grief does not change you.  It reveals you.”

Matt Poole’s journey of self awareness began in 2003 when his mother, Peggy Poole, passed away suddenly from a heart attack. “Her death,” he told me, “hit me hard and turned my world upside down. Then the darkness doubled up on me in 2005, when my friend Tonya Schultz was murdered by her husband.”

Disheartened but not defeated, Matt’s childhood dream of racing reawakened, fueled by love and the desire to honor the memory of this mother and friend. It has been 10 years since his journey began. The road traveled has been littered with the debris of broken promises, apathy and deception but his determination is unwavering.

    This is his story.

“So here I was,” he begins, “on the outside looking in with no experience and almost 40-years-old. Over the course of the next 10 years, I heard the word ‘No’ not just occasionally, but often. Nobody cared about me.  Nobody cared about Mom and Tonya.  Nobody cared about my dream.  However, if I was able to come up with enough money, they were willing to at least act like they cared.”

Matt was quickly confronted by the stark realities of racing. “One instance that comes to mind,” he remembers, “is walking into the race shop of a well known Nationwide Series owner. As I had done many times before, I went in and introduced myself, sat at the conference table with him and told him about my dream and what my goals were. He asked a few basic questions and his reply was short and sweet. ‘Bring me $2 million and I’ll run you in the K&N East Series.’ Just like that. He had never seen me turn a lap but after a 10 minute meeting he was ready to put me in a car and get me right out on the track, provided I came up with $2 million dollars.”

Amid the frustration, there were also moments of sweet success. After four years of knocking on doors, phone calls, emails and letters, Matt had the opportunity to test at Hickory Motor Speedway and eventually compete in his first race, with a picture of his mother and friend, Tonya, taped to the dash of the car for inspiration.

”I walked in off the street and ran against guys who had been doing it for years. I didn’t burn the world down in my first race; I started 10th and finished 12th.”

He donated his winnings to the American Heart Association in his mother’s memory, “because it was a heart attack that took Mom from us,” and to the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Tonya’s memory, “because her children were her world.” In Matt’s second race, he started ninth and finished seventh, once again donating his earnings to charity.

His biggest disappointment came in 2012 when he entered a nationwide driver search which was advertised as “giving a grass roots racer a shot.” It seemed straightforward with reputable backers so Matt submitted a video and asked his friends to vote.

My mindset when I entered,” he explained, “was whether I win or lose, if I just get in and get on TV then maybe, just maybe, someone will take notice. All I had to do was get chosen. “

He soon rose to the top in fan votes and remained there for most of the competition but was not selected as a finalist.

“For reasons still unknown to this day,” Matt says, “that opportunity was taken away from me. Tens of thousands of votes and the voting server crashing three times wasn’t enough to get me chosen.  Sitting in first place for three months wasn’t enough.  Yes, I was mad and I was hurt. I had been publically embarrassed. But even as let down as I felt, I felt like I had let down the people who voted for me day in and day out.”

“I turned my back on the dream,” he continued, “but the dream never went away. The desire never went away. I was the one who went away. That was, by far, the lowest point of this 10 year journey.”

But dreams cannot be denied and Matt is once again chasing his dream. This time, he’s doing it on his terms with a specific goal.

When I walked away, I didn’t think a comeback was possible. At that point in time I didn’t want to,” he admitted. “But the feeling kept eating away at me that if I gave up, I was disappointing Mom and Tonya. I felt like I was disappointing all of the fans, who were behind me and kept telling me, ‘Don’t give up on your dreams.’ I knew there was no use trying to find a sponsor again, I had done that. I knew there was no use trying to find an owner willing to give me a shot. I had done that. I knew that the only way to do it was to turn to the fans for help. A fundraiser was literally the only way it was going to happen. It was, quite simply, my only choice.”

Matt has negotiated a deal with a car owner and put together a plan that he feels is not only realistic, but attainable. All that remains is procuring funds to maintain, transport and operate the car. Any winnings will be donated to charity. Matt will also host various promotional events including an auction of his helmet and firesuit with all proceeds going to charity.

“The goal amount of the fundraiser is for the costs involved with running the 11 race ARCA Series package we have put together. Nobody makes any kind of profit from this deal,” he emphasized. “Not me, not the owner, no one. One hundred percent of my winnings are being donated to the American Heart Association in Mom’s memory and to the Victory Junction Gang Camp in Tonya’s memory. The only thing I get out of this is the opportunity to drive the car. That’s all I have ever chased after.

“This is just my way of honoring the memory of two people who were very dear to me. It’s about a childhood dream and it’s about helping others. I can’t do it without help, though. This is literally my only shot. I’m asking the fans for their help in getting there so I can drive it like I stole it. That’s all I want, that’s all I ever wanted, to drive it like I stole it. And I won’t give up until I do.”

For as little as $1, you can not only help Matt achieve his dream but also make a difference in someone’s life through the charities that he supports. Everyone who contributes will be recognized on the “Contribution Wall of Fame” at Matt Poole Racing and businesses can share their link on the page as well. Matt’s progress will be documented so that you can follow along and be a part of the journey.

“It’s about a childhood dream, and it’s about helping others. I can’t do it without your help.”

  • Matt Poole Making his Return to Racing

Matt Poole Making his Return to Racing

Matt Poole is making his return to racing, thanks in large part to his many fans that have encouraged him to do so after many disappointments in the 10 year quest for his racing dreams. Therefore, Matt is turning to those fans to help him make the dream come true.

“Chasing the racing dream, the hard way” was Matt Poole’s slogan from the beginning. He set out on his journey after the sudden death of his mother, Peggy Poole, in January, 2003. Then his motivation was given an extreme boost after his dear friend Tonya Schultz was murdered by her husband in 2005.

During his time away from racing, Matt Poole says many of his fans and friends asked him repeatedly if he would come back to racing, especially after numerous disappointments along the way.

“I have a legion of fans that have been behind me over the last several years” he says. “It is my hope that those same fans will help me get there”.

The goal is a package of races in the ARCA Truck Series and the ARCA Series. Matt would run a full season in the ARCA Trucks, (8 races) and would be competing for Rookie of the Year honors. Also slated for Matt are three races in ARCA’s premier series. Matt would race two short tracks, as well as an intermediate track. Two of those races will be televised on Fox Sports 1 channel.

A crowd funding page has been integrated with the Matt Poole Racing website, where friends and fans can contribute as little as ten dollars, or any amount they care to contribute. Each and every person who contributes will get their name listed on the Matt Poole Racing website.

As he has always done, all race winnings will be donated to the American Heart Association in memory of Peggy Poole, and to the Victory Junction Gang Camp in memory of Tonya Schultz. Donations will be made on behalf of Matt Poole Racing, as well as the car owner, and each and every person who contributes.

“Fans aren’t just helping to make the dream come true. We are all helping others together, as a team. We need 12,500 people on our team”

  • Matt Poole Will Make His Return to Racing at Caraway Speedway

Matt Poole Will Make His Return to Racing at Caraway Speedway

As a result of scheduling conflicts, and the lack of available dates to race, Matt Poole’s race at Hickory Motor Speedway, which was originally scheduled for August 31st, has been re-scheduled for Saturday, October 12th, at Caraway Speedway, near Asheboro, North Carolina. Matt will be in the Lafferty Motorsports Street Stock, competing in the “Carolina Big Ten Street Stock Series” The race is being sponsored by Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil.

“I’m really excited to get back in the race car again, and I’m proud to have Peak on the car for the race,” said Matt Poole. “Peak gave me a great opportunity to prove myself to them when they invited me to participate in the Peak Stock Car Dream Challenge, and I’m looking forward to showing them that they made the right choice when I get back in the car at Caraway Speedway. I hate that we had to push back the race, but we want to do it right for Peak. We only had a few dates to choose from since it’s the end of the season, and scheduling conflicts made it even harder, but we want to make Peak proud. I’m really looking forward to this latest opportunity they have given me, and I can’t thank them enough for coming on board as a marketing partner for this race.”

Chris Lafferty of Lafferty Motorsports is equally excited about Matt Poole being back in his Street Stock car, saying “I’m very excited for Matt to climb behind the wheel in the Street Stock Series at Caraway Speedway. Matt has gone through our driver development program and he has shown the drive that it takes to overcome adversity and find himself behind the wheel to take the green flag.”

“PEAK is proud to support grassroots racers who continue to show the determination and passion that Matt has shown in his journey towards his dream.  Matt’s hard work and the community supporting him allowed us to see what Matt had to offer, resulting in his invitation to our three day PEAK Stock Car Dreams test at Charlotte Motor Speedway in July.  His involvement in that program enabled folks from PEAK and Michael Waltrip Racing to experience the passion that Matt has for the sport and gave us confidence that helping Matt continues his dream was something that PEAK wanted to be part of.  We wish Matt the best in his next race at Caraway,” said Bryan Emrich, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Peak Anti-Freeze and Motor Oil.

  • Matt Poole Tops the Hot List in the Peak Stock Car Dream Challenge

Matt Poole Tops the Hot List in the Peak Stock Car Dream Challenge

Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) has teamed up with Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil to offer the opportunity of a lifetime to aspiring race car drivers.

Michael Waltrip, the founder and co-owner of MWR, says “the PEAK Stock Car Dream Challenge is a really big deal for all the men and women across the country who feel they could be professional race car drivers if they were just given a chance. Our sport is always trying to usher in a new generation of driving talent as well as spread our passion for racing with everyone, and PEAK is giving us a really unique opportunity to do so.”

Matt Poole originally saw the tweet about the ‘Peak Stock Car Dream Challenge’ on Twitter.

“I clicked on the link,” Matt said, “and my heart skipped a beat. I knew this could be the chance I have been working towards for the last 10 years since I began chasing my racing dream. The first thought that popped into my head was ‘oh, this is me’. It’s a very fair contest. They are not picking just one person from all of the contestants but are picking 10 drivers to have a three day competition in July at Charlotte Motor Speedway.”

For those who are not familiar with his story, Matt explains, “Everyone who knows me knows how I have been ‘chasing the racing dream the hard way’ for the last ten years. My dream is all about honoring the memory of my mother, Peggy Poole, who passed away from a heart attack in 2003 and my best friend Tonya Schultz, who was murdered by her husband in 2005. When I ran my very first race in the Street Stock Series at Hickory Motor Speedway, I had their pictures taped to the dash of the car and I donated my winnings to the American Heart Association and the Victory Junction Gang Camp in their memory.

My dream is not about being rich and famous; my dream is about racing and winning. I plan to donate race winnings from any race the same way, to honor their memory. They meant the world to me and this is my way of making sure they are not forgotten.”

The contest runs through May 31. Each participant must submit a video audition and fans can vote for their favorite up to five times each day. Points are awarded based on a variety of factors including votes, video audition views and the number of times the driver profile is shared on Facebook and Twitter.

Matt read through the rules and submission guidelines, made a video and submitted his entry.

“When I submitted it,” he told me, “I had no clue that it would explode the way it has. I knew that the people who know me best would be behind me but they took the ball and ran with it. The votes started rolling in. Then out of nowhere, both Kelley and Rene Earnhardt shared my contest page on their Facebook pages. Next, the ‘Fans of Dale Earnhardt Jr’ Facebook page shared my link. I started getting requests for interviews, was a guest on several different radio shows and the votes continued to pour in.”

At the conclusion of the contest period, ten drivers will be chosen to participate in a three day Richard Petty Driving Experience (RPDE) race program. The Grand Prize Winner/PEAK Dream Driver will be chosen from these ten participants using the following criteria: (1) performance and ability during the 3-day RPDE program including input from RPDE personnel and other personnel chosen by Sponsor; (2) attention to the PEAK brand; and (3) attention to racing subject matter and demonstrated enthusiasm for racing.

The winner will become the next Michael Waltrip Racing Development ‘PEAK Dream Driver’ and will, subject to verification and subject to qualification as provided in the rules, have the opportunity to compete as a competitively licensed driver in a PEAK-sponsored stock car in a sanctioned race of Sponsor’s choosing in the Summer or Fall of 2013.

Being on the Peak Stock Car Dream Challenge top ten ‘Hot List’ is no guarantee that a driver will be selected.  But Matt Poole believes that first place takes him one step closer to his dream.

He is amazed at how quickly he achieved his goal, thankful to everyone who continues to support him and appreciative of the opportunity.

“It took only 2 weeks for me to reach the top five on the “Hot List,” he said, “and less than a week later, I was in first place. Now I am sitting on a 15,000 plus point lead over second place.

Everyone is still sharing the link every single day, encouraging all their friends to vote 5 times a day. The response has been literally mind blowing. But we would not even have this opportunity if it weren’t for Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil who is sponsoring the contest. I cannot thank them enough for giving me this opportunity. There will never be enough thanks for everyone who has voted for me five times a day and shared the page every day. All of my friends, fans and my family are the ones who have gotten me to where I am today.

This is my childhood dream of being a race car driver coming true. This is what I have worked towards for ten years. I’m in it to win it.”
