Joey Logano Scores the Pole at Michigan

Joey Logano will lead the field to the green flag on Sunday in the Irish Hills of Michigan.

The driver of the No. 22 Team Penske Ford scored the pole for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway after posting a time of 36.080 and a speed of 199.557 mph.

“It feels good,” Logano said. “Finally, we were able to break through. The last two weeks have stunk for me and my team. We have won the first two rounds the last few weeks and qualified second. Now we figured out how to be second in the first round and first in the last two. That is a good move. I couldn’t be more proud of the team and the effort they put into this new package. This is such an unknown showing up here so it is cool to show what all the engineers and simulation department were able to do to put together a good package off the truck. I am very happy to be driving this car.”

It’s his 16th career pole in 270 Sprint Cup Series starts, second in 15 at Michigan, second of the 2016 season and 11th top-10 start in 2016.

Martin Truex Jr. will start second in his No. 78 Furniture Row Racing Toyota after posting a time of 36.178 and a speed of 199.016 mph.

“It was definitely an exciting run that third round – we freed the car up quite a bit and it was pretty ‘slideways’ going into turn three so it was a lot of fun out there,” Truex said. “Sunday is going to be a blast – get the tape off and get the race setups in the race cars and get that sun on the track all day. It’s going to get slick and it’s going to be a lot of fun so looking forward to that. All in all, it was a good day for us. We had to work hard on it today and had trouble getting through tech. Our first run was pretty bad, our second run was better and our third run was pretty good so really proud of the guys on the Denver Mattress Furniture Row Toyota. We came out with a good result so it was good. We just keep digging and never give up – front row starting spot is pretty decent.”

He was late getting to the grid in the first round after his car didn’t pass tech inspection the first time through.

“I think the biggest thing was just the track conditions changing so much,” Truex said of getting his car through tech. “It got so much hotter, the pace slowed down quite a bit and anytime that happens it changes these cars considerably. That was the biggest factor. I was fine, I figured I knew we would get through eventually and we would get a lap in when it was ready. Just calm, cool, collected and wait my turn.”

It will be his ninth top-10 start in 2016 and sixth in 21 races at Michigan.

Tony Stewart will start third in his No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet after posting a time of 36.190 and a speed of 198.950 mph.

“I’m glad that was the last time I had to do that today,” Stewart said of his lap in the final round. “It felt really good. We were really loose in practice and Mike (Bugarewicz, crew chief) did a great job in the break there of making some big changes to get us caught up. It got my confidence back there and made me feel like I finally had the right-rear (tire) in the track there. Now we can hustle a little bit.”

It will be his 10th top-10 start at Michigan and second in seven starts this season.

Denny Hamlin will start fourth in his No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota after posting a time of 36.222 and a speed of 198.774 mph.

“It’s slippery out there,” Hamlin said. “Even though the speeds are up there, averaging 199, a lot of it is straightaway speed. What we really wanted was slower corners and faster straightaways and that’s definitely been achieved so far.”

Ryan Blaney will round out the top-five in his No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing Ford as the highest starting rookie after posting a time of 36.256 and a speed of 198.588 mph.

“We were really loose the first run, just really, really free and that hurt us a lot,” Blaney said. “They got it a lot better the second run out. They did a good job of getting us better throughout the day. Unfortunately, we had an extra lap on our tires. Who knows what would have happened with one less lap on the tires in the final round.”

Ryan Newman will start sixth in his No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. Kyle Larson will start seventh in his No. 42 Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet. Austin Dillon will start eighth in his No. 3 RCR Chevrolet. Kyle Busch will start ninth in his No. 18 JGR Toyota. Chase Elliott will round out the top-10 in his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet.

Carl Edwards will start 11th in his No. 19 JGR Toyota. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will round out the 12 drivers that made the final round of qualifying in his No. 17 Roush Fenway Racing Ford.

During the session in the first round, David Ragan got loose rounding turn 3, slid up the track and made contact with the wall with the right-rear corner of his car. The session was also red-flagged after a brake duct that came from the No. 1 of Jamie McMurray was found on the track in turn 3. Kevin Harvick was caught out on the track by both and was unable to make a lap that would place him higher than 29th.

Twenty-two Chevrolet’s, 11 Ford’s and seven Toyota’s make up the 40-car field. No driver was sent home as 40 cars were entered.

Changes Coming to Aero Package for Michigan and Kentucky

CONCORD, N.C. — NASCAR will test changes for the 2017 aero package in two races this season in their continuing effort to remove downforce from the cars and improve competition.

NASCAR announced Thursday that modifications to the aerodynamic package will be implemented for the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway and the Quaker State 400 at Kentucky Speedway. These are designed to further reduce the amount of downforce the cars generate and lead to more improvement in the on-track product across the board in the Sprint Cup Series.

“I think we look at it as a never-ending journey; if we can improve we’re going to do that,” Steve O’Donnell, executive vice president and chief racing development officer, said of continuing to make adjustments. “We wanted to go the direction of low downforce, see how that worked, not kind of go all the way in and hope that we are directionally right. And we are seeing that play out. We’ve seen some great racing at the beginning of the year.

“But we also knew that we had some more levers that we could pull if the direction kind of proved out, so we’ve tried some of those things. We’ve tested it and what we’ve also wanted to do is lower some of the corner speeds to allow for even more passing. That was one of the areas where we’ve seen minimal change, but there are some levers we can pull to really drive that down.”

The changes include reducing the spoiler size from 3.5 to 2.5 inches, a two-inch reduction of the splitter and resizing the deck fin.

These are in addition to the changes already implemented in the past few weeks such as welding the truck arm mounts and reducing the number of brake fans the cars can run.

“We have worked collectively on some directions we want to go in, but to do that right we think the final step is to let that play out on one or two tracks,” O’Donnell said. “And these are the two — Kentucky and Michigan — that we’ve played out and let the teams concentrate really on what they’ve done to prepare for the year. We think that’s manageable and that’ll give us enough data to look at for 2017.”

This follows a trend NASCAR started last year where they tested the lower-downforce package currently being used at Kentucky and Darlington Raceway. Both races received rave reviews from drivers, media and fans.

  • Kenseth Wins Coors Light Pole at Michigan

Kenseth Wins Coors Light Pole at Michigan

By Reid Spencer | NASCAR Wire Service

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Matt Kenseth’s No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota crew woke a sleeping giant just in time for qualifying for Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race (2:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN) at Michigan International Speedway.

But Kenseth jokingly credited a sleepless night — brought on by worry over teammate Denny Hamlin’s lack of punctuality — for his pole-winning effort in Friday’s time trials at the two-mile track.

Getting the most out of the high-drag aerodynamic package in force at the event at Michigan, Kenseth covered the distance in 36.458 seconds (197.488 mph) to win his third Coors Light Pole Award of the season, his first at MIS and the 16th of his career.

Hamlin (196.990 mph) was second fastest, and Carl Edwards (196.276 mph) claimed the third starting spot, as Joe Gibbs Racing swept the top three positions on the grid for the 23rd Sprint Cup race of the season.

Austin Dillon (195.918 mph) qualified fourth as the top Chevrolet in the field, followed by Tony Stewart (195.477 mph) in a Chevrolet and Kyle Busch (195.450 mph) in the fourth JGR Toyota. Joey Logano, last week’s winner at Watkins Glen, qualified 10th as the only Ford driver to crack the top 12.

Based on practice speed, Edwards was a favorite to win the pole, but Kenseth, who was 10th on the speed chart in the opening practice session, closed the gap in time from qualifying.

“We were a long ways off Carl in practice, and I don’t even know what changes they made, but they changed a lot of stuff that really woke this thing up and had some speed,” Kenseth said. “I knew I got through (Turns) 1 and 2 good, but Denny put up such a fast lap, and I got into (Turn) 3, and I was bound and determined that I was going to make it wide open.

“I had the first half of the corner. It was the second half that was starting to get exciting. I got sliding up the track and bogged down a little bit. I wasn’t sure that we were going have it, but I have to say thanks to those guys (the crew). They gave me a car with a lot of speed.”

In Hamlin’s view, Busch’s return from an injury has achieved a critical mass of four talented, veteran drivers at JGR who can benefit from each other’s expertise.

“When you have drivers that you can feed off of, like the three teammates that I have, it makes a difference, and so that’s where you’re seeing the results,” Hamlin said.

That didn’t prevent the driver of the No. 11 Toyota Camry from throwing a barb toward the 43-year-old teammate who beat him for the pole.

“Matt was probably too old to remember to lift there,” Hamlin said of Kenseth’s qualifying run.

    Kenseth provided a different perspective.

“I could say it’s because I didn’t get enough sleep,” Kenseth said. “I flew up with Denny today, and he likes to come to everything at the last minute. I didn’t sleep last night thinking that we weren’t going to make it up here, so it’s really just for lack of sleep. I get to credit Denny for the pole.”

Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Logano completed the top 10. Reed Sorenson failed to make the 43-car field.

  • Kyle Busch Returns to No. 54 Seat

Kyle Busch Returns to No. 54 Seat

    Race Advance

No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota News and Notes:

    • This week at Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in Brooklyn, Kyle Busch returns to the seat of the No. 54 Monster Energy Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) Toyota Camry, after recuperating from injuries sustained in the season-opener race that left Busch out of his familiar black machine for 11 weeks. At the beginning of the 2015 NASCAR XFINITY Series (NXS) schedule, Busch sustained a compound fracture of the right lower leg and a mid-foot fracture of his left foot in an accident during the Feb. 21 XFINITY Series race at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. While Busch returned to racetrack action four weeks ago at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway, in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, this week will be Busch’s first XFINITY Series attempt back in the No. 54 since February. Future scheduled races for Busch in the No. 54 Camry, after the Michigan event, are not yet confirmed.
    • At the ‘Motor City’ track this Saturday, Busch will make his 298th XFINITY Series start piloting the black Toyota Camry and works to offer the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 54 team their first taste of victory lane this year. Historically on the two-mile D-shaped oval, Busch has earned one win, one pole, six top-five and six top-10 finishes over his XFINITY Series career.
    • While Busch last experienced victory Lane at Michigan International Speedway in 2004, with a previous manufacturer, his last attempt was a strong Toyota effort at grabbing the checkered flag. In 2014, Busch started by capturing a track record with a qualifying lap of 193.242mph, a 37.259 second lap to start the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet 250 event. The field was set to complete 125 laps on a track surface that was repaved in recent years and would prove difficult for some drivers to maneuver. Despite pavement challenges, however, Busch led the field to green and maintained a top-five position through much of the event until a late-race pit-stop sequence forced the No. 54 team further back into the field. Without enough yellow-flag cautions to work with, Busch drove his Monster Energy machine home as high as possible, a fourth-place result.
    • The now 30-year old Busch holds an 11-year streak from 2004 to 2014 of consecutive poles within the XFINITY Series, a 43-career total. Busch’s last visit to MIS in this series, in June of 2014, produced a pole-qualifying result with a track record 193.242mph.
    • 2014 XFINITY Series statistics for Busch include a seven-win season with seven poles, 25 top-five and 25 top-10 results along with 1,769 laps led. In 2014 Busch maintained ownership of the laps-led leader (1,769 laps, 29.18%) and miles-led leader (1,958.94, 23.80%).
    • Joe Gibbs Racing at Michigan in the NASCAR Xfinity Series covers 34 races, two wins, 12 top-five finishes, 23 top-10 finishes and one pole.
    • Loop Data Statistics at MIS over the last 10 races record Busch with over 89% of laps in the top-15 spots on track. Busch is the youngest winner at MIS on 8/21/04 at 19 yrs., 3 mos. and 19 days.
    • Crew Chief Chris Gayle’s Michigan statistics include two races over two years accomplishing one top-10 finish. Gayle served as crew chief on JGR’s No. 11 Nationwide Series team the previous two seasons after he was an engineer on JGR’s No. 18 Sprint Cup Series team, aligned with Busch.
    • Race Info: June 13, 2015 at 1:30pm EST live on Fox Sports 1, Great Clips 250 Benefiting Paralyzed Veterans of America, 125 laps.
  • The Final Word – The Top Four at Pocono Have Been the Season’s Best Four

The Final Word – The Top Four at Pocono Have Been the Season’s Best Four

Three drivers. When it came to the story of the Pocono race, only three mattered. You probably wanted to know who led the race for the opening few laps, and that would have been Carl Edwards. He finished 15th. For the rest of the way, it was down to two names, right down to the final lap; Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick. No one else much mattered on Sunday.

When it comes down to points, these two lead the way this year. When it comes to wins, Harvick’s two trailed only Jimmie Johnson’s four in that department. Truex, on the other hand, still had to close the deal. That finally happened in a race where he was a factor from start to finish, leading four times for 97 of the 160 laps, to snap a 69 race winless string. Harvick led for 39 to claim his 10th Top Two in 14 starts. As for third place, that eventually went to Johnson, as Pocono became a showcase of the three best thus far in 2015. Okay, Top Four, with Joey Logano finishing fourth.

With the Truex win, we still have no drivers outside the Top 16 in points with a victory this season. With a dozen events to go, that could change, which would put some pressure on those up there, yet still winless. However, Jamie McMurray, Kasey Kahne and even Jeff Gordon look safe for the moment though Paul Menard, Aric Almirola and Ryan Newman are vulnerable. All three finished outside the Top Thirty on Sunday.

Top Thirty on the season is valuable for those who want to win to be in. Only Kyle Busch has a realistic expectation to possibly win amongst the outsiders, and he sits 151 points behind Trevor Bayne for that 30th spot. Busch gained 15 points on Bayne over the weekend and needs to average a 12.6 point advantage over each of the next 12 races, as well as claim a win along the way, for it to matter.

Danica Patrick looked good for much of the race, solidly a Top 15, if not better. She lost a tire, found a fence, and finished 37th. However, the girl looked good, and for those on her bandwagon, that certainly counts for something.

After taking the last five at Pocono, shared by their four drivers, Team Hendrick had to settle for all four in the Top 15. Considering the trials Truex has faced both professionally and personally over the past couple of years, I think their genuine happiness over his success more than makes up for any disappointment that they might feel. Way more.

While Truex celebrated, Almirola (43rd), Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (42nd), and Sam Hornish Jr. (41st) were top thirty drivers who did not have top thirty days. Meanwhile, Kyle Busch (9th), Ty Dillon (18th), and Landon Cassill (25th) were among those outsiders who gladly took their place.

Michigan International Speedway is the next stop, where the last six contests run over the past three years have been split between Hendrick Chevrolets and Roush or Penske Fords. At least it is a venue Hendrick has not won the last five…just the last two.

  • Stewart to Sit Out Michigan; Jeff Burton to Serve as Interim Driver for No. 14 Team

Stewart to Sit Out Michigan; Jeff Burton to Serve as Interim Driver for No. 14 Team

KANNAPOLIS, N.C., (Aug. 14, 2014) – Tony Stewart has decided not to compete in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event this weekend at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

Veteran driver Jeff Burton, a winner of 21 Sprint Cup races, will pilot the No. 14 Mobil 1/Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet SS for Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) in place of Stewart.

This driver change pertains only to Michigan. Stewart’s plans for upcoming Sprint Cup races have yet to be determined.

At 10 a.m. EDT on Friday in the deadline room of the infield media center at Michigan, Burton will be part of a press briefing featuring SHR executive vice president Brett Frood and SHR vice president of competition Greg Zipadelli.
