  • J.R. Fitzpatrick Set to Tackle Martinsville Paperclip This Weekend

J.R. Fitzpatrick Set to Tackle Martinsville Paperclip This Weekend

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”266″][/media-credit]A couple weeks before the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway, fans learned that J.R. Fitzpatrick had struck a deal to drive for TurnOne Racing this season. However, it wasn’t just a quick last minute deal.

“Stacy and I had been talking well over a year, putting this deal together,” Fitzpatrick says. “Even though we still got a couple gaps to go for the remaining parts of the year to be able to run full season here.”

The opening race at Daytona didn’t go as Fitzpatrick would’ve hoped as he finished 34th due to debris hitting the radiator.

“It’s just unfortunate that we didn’t have a truck that was very fast by itself, so obviously we had to start at the back,” he says. “It worked really well, it sucked up in the draft really well. I think if we would’ve missed the wreck, we would’ve been good.

“I hung around the back, tried to stay away from all the wrecks, but ended up involved in one. So you go to front, you go to the back, I don’t know. Its just a big chess game. So our strategy didn’t work.”

Now focus shifts to this weekend at Martinsville Speedway where Fitzpatrick is hoping to have a good finish.

“The track is exciting,” he says. “Obviously it’s a little more familiar to what I’m used to, in terms of short track racing. Even though it’s definitely a lot bigger than tracks at home, it’s definitely something I’m comfortable on. I’ve already been there twice.

In his last two starts on the paperclip, despite running strong, he finished 21st both times due to being caught up in wrecks. However, so far this weekend things look good as he was 15th in final practice and tested well.

“We tested extremely well so I think going into the race this weekend, I think we have one of the best trucks ever,” he says. “So looking forward to it.”

Hoping the rest of the season goes well, Fitzpatrick is hoping to finish in the top 10 in points.

He got started in racing at the age of six running a Jr. Late Model at Sauble Beach. Then he was 13 years old, he moved to Delaware Speedway and got a late model.

Fitzpatrick then moved up to the CASCAR Super Series, where he finished second in the Rookie of the Year standings in 2004 at the age of 16. At the age of 17, he scored his first win and got three top-fives and five top-10 finishes.

[media-credit name=”TurnOne Racing” align=”alignright” width=”301″][/media-credit]Then in 2006, he became the youngest Canadian National Series Champion winning the CASCAR Championship with a win, five podium finishes and two pole awards at the age of 18.

Between 2006 and 2007, NASCAR took over the series, renaming it the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. Since then, Fitzpatrick has scored six wins, 22 top fives and 36 top 10s in 54 starts while finishing as high as second in 2010.

Heading into this year, he is hoping to win the championship.

“I haven’t been able to piece that together,” he says. “Last couple of years, I’ve been second, third in points, due to mechanical failure. I think now with the new stuff that we’ve got, I don’t think that’s going to be a problem anymore.”

The first race on the schedule is Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (Mosport), which is set to happen on May 20th.

“We’re going for the win,” he says. “I think there’s only two of us that are two time winners at that place and we’re both going to be at that race so it’s going to be exciting. That’s one of my favourite tracks and to be one of the guys everybody watches every week when we go there, it’s kind of a cool feeling. Having new road course equipment, it makes that program better. So I think we’re going to be a threat to win one.”

When he is not racing at the NASCAR ranks, you can still find Fitzpatrick racing somewhere as he often goes go-karting.

“It’s a lot of fun,” he says. “When I’m not working on a car or doing anything of that nature, I go out with a bunch of people and go-kart whenever I can. The place I normally go to, I know inside and out, so it’s a lot of fun.”

Looking forward 10 years down the road, he says he can’t plan that far ahead, but still wants to be racing.

  • Mark Dilley: Racecar Driver, Track Owner, Co-Owner of Wide Open Motorsports

Mark Dilley: Racecar Driver, Track Owner, Co-Owner of Wide Open Motorsports

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignright” width=”266″][/media-credit]Mark Dilley had a plan in his mind as he knew what he wanted the track to look like. However, explaining it to the construction engineers was another story. They wanted it explained in percentages while Dilley only knew the degrees of banking he wanted.

With just over 12 hours to put together a plan, it was time to hit a deadline. Everything came together that night after drawing at the kitchen table using his kids’ crayons, a dinner plate and tea cup, along with a call to a friend who had a computer program.

Flash forward two race seasons and Sunset International Speedway has gone from a track that was down in the dumps into a track that drivers want to race at.

“First off, the staff they all seem to take pride in their jobs at the speedway and they do it with a sense of professionalism,” 2011 Limited Late Model (LLM) Champion Kevin Cornelius says. “The facility is second to none, in my opinion. I think the new ownership group has done an outstanding job bringing Sunset Speedway back to life and generating a lot of excitement at the speedway. Also, the competition last year was the some of the best in Ontario and it showed with close hard racing every night, and the competitors, I’m proud to race door to door with them.”

Dilley got on the ownership side of Sunset after hearing about the status of track. Dilley himself grew up racing at Sunset and the track still meant a lot to him. He also had enjoyed the time that he spent in charge of Barrie Speedway with Brad Moran. So when it came to this situation, everything just came together.

“When we got involved in this, they put a team of owners together that had money to back it and really wanted to make a difference,” he explains. “They’ve done that by the investment they’ve made into the track, redoing the track. Just whatever they said they’d do, they’ve done and it’s been good to work with partners like that where they have the money to repave the track, redo it and a real fast and exciting place to be.”

For drivers that race at Sunset, they note it’s because of his understanding with them.

“Mark has made Sunset International Speedway one of Canada’s top oval tracks by being a promoter who understands what it takes to make a track work,” Mike Bentley, Sunset LLM Competitor, explains. “Being a driver himself, he understands what the weekly racers at Sunset go through and makes sure their opinions and concerns are heard.”

Becoming in charge of Sunset Speedway came out of a business venture already started with business partner Linda Jones – Wide Open Motorsports. They started Wide Open Motorsports in 2007 because there was a need for race teams to someone to organize the marketing.

“When NASCAR started, there was a need for teams to have organization from the side of corporate representation,” he explains. “As far as organizing things at the race track, activation of sponsorships, and really where the teams are on demand to that, that’s really how it got started. Whether we came in and managed an existing sponsorship or brought in a new sponsorship and did it that way. Basically to organize and do everything under one umbrella.”

One of the keys to the organization is finding sponsorship, which isn’t always easy. Due to that, most businesses, as Dilley explains, ask for money up front.

“A lot of times there are companies and agencies that will do things, but they take a big retainer,” he explains. “So what that means is basically if I was going to get you a sponsorship, you’d give me $40,000-$50,000 up front to hunt that sponsorship down. I guess if I find something, that’s good. If I don’t, well, that’s part of the business.”

However, Dilley and Jones do it differently to make it easier.

“Basically, Linda and I put whatever to some degree – I mean, we’ll come back and ask for some money if its getting real crazy – but generally speaking, we do everything upfront,” he says. “We work on a street permission basis.”

So far in the five years the company has been open, they’ve put together some good sizable sponsorship packages for drivers. One of the biggest was getting Canadian Tire to sponsor Scott Steckly.

“Early on, to get Canadian Tire was huge for us,” he says. “They were basically going to get out of motorsports – we managed to get them back in, so that was huge.”

Finding the sponsorships hasn’t been easy due to the economy as Dilley says when the economy goes down, a lot of companies cut advertising business first.  However, it’s still possible to find sponsorship as it’s all about being prepared to give back to the sponsor.

“Make sure to be prepared to give back 30% minimum of what you’re going for,” he advises. “So if you’re basically if you need $10,000 to race, if that’s your race budget, then you really need to get $13-$14,000 cause you’re going to spend $4,000 on activating that $10,000. So what that means – so if you get $10,000, you’re only going to spend on race program about $7,000 cause you’re going to be spending $3,000 on tickets, buildboards, shirts, lettering, shows, whatever it may be to get them involved.”

Dilley adds that most people don’t do that and end up using the full $10,000 they get on the race car and doing their own thing. Dilley says that because drivers are forgetting to give back to the sponsor, sponsors are leaving due to no return investment.

Beyond Wide Open Motorsports and running Sunset Speedway, Dilley is also a driver in the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. This past season, Dilley finished sixth in points with a win on the season coming at his home track, Barrie Speedway. Keep everything balanced at times isn’t quite easy, he admits.

“There’s a lot of stuff that goes on at the same time; that’s the biggest thing,” he explains.

There was the one weekend during the season in July where Dilley made multiple trips back and forth from Sunset Speedway to Exhibition Place for the Canadian Tire Series race weekend so he could race, while keeping an eye on the double-header show.

When he can’t be there, he depends a lot on his staff to keep things under control.

“We do have good staff that works for us at Sunset that can take up a lot of slack,” he says.

Most notably, he brought Steve Slaughter on board to be part of the management team. Slaughter has experience running race tracks himself as he was in charge of Sunset during the last 1990s.

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”266″][/media-credit]Despite all the positives noted, there are some issues that some drivers note about the track.

“Sunset Speedway thinks that they need to have one late model driver to what they call headline the show which I think is a slap in the face to the rest of us other drivers that race at sunset speedway,” Cornelius explains. “It’s my opinion that this do called headliner hurts our car counts and the quality of the show that we try to put on every Saturday night.”

There are also those who feel that there are issues within technical inspection and drivers getting away with breaking the rules.

“They need to stick with the rules when it comes to teching,” Tara Case, Sunset Super Stock driver, says. “They let too many people away with stuff and makes it harder for others to make it anywhere.”

Though overall, everybody says that things with the track are quite positive from their perspective.

“His team has done a great job and you can see this by all the people in the stands,” Evan Towle, who is in charge of CanadianRacingOnline.com. “Every time I go, I notice a new improvement.

“The things I notice is the staff is really friendly and the people in the stands are talking about how much they like the track and what Mark and his team has done.

“Never had anything that I can complain about since Mark took over. I have followed Mark Dilley since his CASCAR days and he loves racing and he is a no bs type guy. I brought my daughter to NASCAR Speedpark and Mark was there with his car. He talked to her and you can really see he enjoys racing and his fans and you can see this with everything he has done for Sunset Speedway.”

DJ Kennington Continues Partnership with Castrol Edge

[media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”150″][/media-credit]Early last week, DJ Kennington and Castrol Edge announced that once again they’d be partnering up to compete for the 2012 NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Championship. The St. Thomas, Ontario racer will pilot the No. 17 Castro Edge Dodge to continue one of the longest partnerships in the series as it approaches two decades.

“I’ve said this for many years, I simply wouldn’t be where I am and would not have been able to win races and a championship without the backing from Castrol,” the 2010 series champion says.  “They have welcomed me into their family from the beginning and our relationship continues to grow, nobody’s had better support than me.”

The company is excited about the continued partnership as Marketing Communications Manager for Wakefield Canada, which distributes Castrol Edge, Marsha McLaughlin says, “partnering with DJ Kennington has been an important part of our marketing program with Castrol for nearly two decades.  We’re proud of all that DJ has accomplished in racing and look forward to another exciting season together helping him edge his way to another championship.”

Last season, Kennington won two races – Mosport and Kawartha – though fell short in going back-to-back, as he finished second to Scot Steckly.

“We gave it a good run last year but came up just a little short repeating,” Kennington says.  “Our guys are all anxious to get back and get back on top because we like finishing first better.”

The 2012 season opens up on Sunday May 20th at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, formerly known as Mosport International Raceway. All the races during the 2012 season will be televised on TSN.

Robert Yates To Be Part of NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Display at CME

[media-credit name=”NASCAR Canadian Tire Series” align=”alignleft” width=”282″][/media-credit]NASCAR Canadian Tire Series staff announced that Robert Yates will be part of their display this year at the Canadian Motorsports Expo.

“We’re very pleased that the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is back at the Canadian Motorsports Expo,” series director Brad Moran said. “While many fans see our races at the track and on TSN, this show, however, offers a unique opportunity to see what goes on in the pits and in ‘tech lane’ on race weekends. This level of fan access isn’t possible when we’re in the heat of an actual race event, so we enjoy offering some hauler tours and an up close look at all that goes on.”

Yates will be part of the display that will be running for its second year. The display is meant to give fans a behind-the-scenes look at the series. This is the first year that Yates will be part of the display, though. Yates will be there on Saturday February 11th at the display to talk with fans and sign autograph’s from 10:30am till 4pm.

Robert Yates Racing is the exclusive provider of the NASCAR-approved Spec Engine, which is an optional program available for use in all NASCAR touring series in US and Canada. Both Yates and Davy will be on hand to answer questions that drivers and team owners may have about the engines.

“Making official suppliers and industry experts available to racers is something that NASCAR regularly does as a service to its competitors,” Moran said. “Chris Davy was at last year’s CME with us and many of the teams took advantage of the opportunity to discuss the ‘Spec’ Engine program. Having Robert Yates join him this year is an added bonus. As a team owner and engine builder, Yates has won championships and the biggest stock-car races in the world. His drivers were successful and his engines were legendary for their power and reliability. NASCAR is proud to have him at our booth Saturday, February 11 at the Canadian Motorsports Expo.”

Lastly, Yates will take to the Mazda Stage from 6:15pm to 7pm to discuss his career in motorsports.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series display will go beyond just having Yates and Davy. The center of the display will be the race hauler that officials use at each race for all of their activities.  Moran and officials will be on hand to offer tours. They will also have ‘tech lane’ set-up so fans can see what it looks like, while also having some race cars on display.

Also, Yates will take to the Mazda Stage from 6:15pm to 7pm to discuss his career in motorsports.

The Canadian Motorsports Expo will be held from February 10th till 12th at the International Centre in Toronto. For more information, check out http://www.canadianmotorsportsexpo.com.

  • Don Thomson Jr. To Crew Chief for J.R. Fitzpatrick in 2012

Don Thomson Jr. To Crew Chief for J.R. Fitzpatrick in 2012

    [media-credit id=4 align=”alignleft” width=”200″][/media-credit]

Fitzpatrick Motorsports announced on January 9th that Don Thomson Jr. will be crew chief for J.R. Fitzpatrick in 2011.

Thomson Jr. hangs up his helmet as a driver for 2012 after winning seven Canadian championships and driving the EHR/Team 3 Red Dodge last year.

“I am really excited about this next chapter in my career and glad to be back at Fitzpatrick Motorsports, the Hamilton, Ontario native said. “I am comfortable here, I know the way the system works here and John is really committed to put the best product on the track for J.R. and our sponsor partners. I have also known J.R. since he was eight years old and he has grown to become the best driver in the series so I really want to be part of whatever he does up here.”

Before moving to EHR for 2011, Thomson had spent four years racing for Fitzpatrick so it was no surprise that shortly after the season, discussions started between J.R. Fitzpatrick, Thomson and team owner John Fitzpatrick.

“I know Thomson well and I know what he brings to the team,” John Fitzpatrick said. “We were a pretty formidable program, winning eight championships between him and J.R. during the CASCAR days and I expect his transition to Crew Chief here to be pretty seamless.”

The role of pit boss and adviser to Fitzpatrick isn’t a new role either as he built and crewed a late model program in the early years and was there for Fitzpatrick’s first laps behind the wheel of a CASCAR.

“I am really pumped to get this season started,” J.R. said. “I had a lot of good runs last season and Thomson’s addition to the team will only make us stronger. The new car should be great and to have another championship caliber mind working in the shop gives me great confidence.”

Fitzpatrick is looking for his first Canadian championship since winning the CASCAR championship 2006. Last year, Fitzpatrick finished third in points with 10 top 10s in 12 races.

The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series season gets underway May 20 on the road course at Mosport International Raceway. The Championship will be comprised of 12 races in Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
