    Harrison Burton gets first win at Auto Club Speedway

    It was a beautiful day for the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Auto Club Speedway for the Production Alliance Group 300. For one driver it was even more special as he is one of the few who can say he won his very first Xfinity Series race on Leap Day. Who is the lucky driver? It was Harrison Burton in only his 12th start. Burton, who drives the No. 20 Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, took the checkered flag after a caution filled final stage.

    “It’s awesome!” Burton exclaimed, “I’m so proud of our guys, it’s really awesome, it feels so good to win.” He further stated, “When you go through a little bit of a drought, you doubt yourself especially after last year, we struggled a little bit.”

    Stage 1 went caution free with Brandon Jones taking the stage win.

    Stage 2 went pretty much the same as stage one. There weren’t any cautions and Jones won the second stage too. It was looking as if no one would be able to touch Jones, until the third stage.

    The final stage of the race was the exact opposite of the first two. They say that cautions breed cautions and this stage was proof of that. There were several drivers vying up front including Chase Briscoe and Daniel Hemric. The cautions flew fast mostly for cut tires and a couple of spins. There was a mini big one that a few drivers like Brandon Brown and Michael Annett got caught up in but most cars were able to continue the race.

    The two drivers who could get the closest to Jones were Riley Herbst who took second in his No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and Austin Cindric who placed third in the No. 22 Team Penske Ford.

    When asked what he needed at the end to catch Burton, Herbst commented,” A few more laps. This Monster Energy Supra was really fast. I’m really proud of Harrison, me and him have worked so hard this off season.”

    Austin Cindric said, “Obviously it is great to continue the consistency. I think we had a car capable of winning, especially with some of the attrition there at the end. Execution kind of bit us today. I had to get brave on some restarts. We were better than the 20 and 18 there at the end but you just need track position sometimes. Overall, I couldn’t be prouder of my Odyssey Battery Ford Mustang team for where we came from after unloading to being a race winning car. Just not enough laps in the race for us.”

    Rounding out the top five were Ryan Sieg and Justin Haley. Anthony Alfredo, Daniel Hemric, Ross Chastain, Jeremy Clements, and Josh Williams finished sixth through 10, respectively.

    Harrrison Burton has the points lead with 136 points over second place Chase Briscoe with 126 points.

    Weekend schedule for Auto Club Speedway

    This week the NASCAR Cup Series and the Xfinity Series travel to Auto Club Speedway. The NASCAR Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series has two weeks off and will return to competition at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 14.

    The last five Cup Series races at Auto Club Speedway have been won by five different drivers: Kyle Busch (2019), Martin Truex Jr. (2018), Kyle Larson (2017), Jimmie Johnson (2016) and Brad Keselowski (2015). Cole Custer won last year’s Xfinity Series race at the 2-mile track.

    There are 36 cars on the Xfinity Series preliminary entry list and 38 cars on the Cup Series preliminary entry list.

    NASCAR Xfinity Series Power Rankings – Las Vegas I

    The NASCAR Xfinity Series headed out west for their first stop on the west-coast swing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. When the Xfinity Series drivers and teams arrived on Thursday, it was sunny skies and the usual Vegas temperatures. However, when race day on Saturday arrived, the Boyd Gaming 300 was in jeopardy due to the threat of rain increasing throughout the day. They always say, if you want rain, bring a NASCAR race to your town and it will rain.

    Just shortly after drivers fired their engines, the skies opened up and created a delay. After the 50-minute track drying effort, cars got on-track for the first time since Friday afternoon as qualifying was canceled. Only 50 laps and the first stage were completed before the rain returned to the track. NASCAR dried the track for what felt like the longest rain delay ever. Then, there looked liked to be some light at the end of the tunnel, as the track was ready at 10:30 p.m. ET. However, Mother Nature had other plans and completely washed out any progress that NASCAR had made. This forced the Xfinity Series officials to postpone the race to Sunday, one-hour after the Cup Series race.

    Once Sunday came, the Xfinity Series drivers were able to get the rest of the 150 laps remaining completed. While there were only five cautions for 28 laps and not much action occurred in this race, there were some drivers that had and needed a great run after a dismal week at Daytona last weekend.

    Here are this week’s Power Rankings following the Boyd Gaming 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

    1. Chase Briscoe – Briscoe completely dominated and waxed the field in Sunday night’s race. After starting second, it didn’t take him long to get the lead. In fact, Briscoe led the last 25 laps of the first stage before taking the stage win. One day later, the Indiana native continued to have a great car and consistently remained up front. Briscoe had an intriguing battle with Ford Performance teammate Austin Cindric, while also battling with Justin Allgaier at times for the lead. Though, the No. 98 Stewart Haas Racing team was the team to beat in this race. It seemed like nothing could stop Briscoe. Once the final pit stops cycled out, Briscoe led the final 36 laps to score his third career Xfinity Series victory. A dominant showing by Briscoe and the No. 98 team.

    2. Harrison Burton – A quiet race for Harrison Burton and the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Dex Imaging Toyota. Burton never challenged for the race win or lead, but had a strong car to fight for a top-five finish. He ran as low as 20th, however, that was mainly due to pit stops cycling out. Burton’s mid-race run was a seventh-place car. The JGR driver was able to finish seventh and sixth in both stages, respectively. A late-race caution might’ve helped Burton to challenge for the win, but ultimately, had to settle for a fifth-place finish.

    3. Austin Cindric – After a disastrous run last week at Daytona by finishing 25th due to a crash, Cindric had a great run this week at Vegas and almost pulled off the win. He led a couple of times early in the stages and narrowly grabbed a stage win in the second stage. Cindric led 16 laps from laps 149 to 164 but was passed by eventual race winner Briscoe. The Team Penske driver tried all he could to run Briscoe down late in the finish but ran out of time to do so. Cindric finished second at the end of the night after leading 39 laps.

    4. Noah Gragson – Noah Gragson and the No. 9 JR Motorsports team had an interesting night out in Las Vegas. The hometown driver started seventh thanks to qualifying being rained out but had a unique moment on lap 163. Gragson accidentally made contact with the No. 21 of Myatt Snider on the frontstretch, which sent Snider spinning. After this happened, Snider and his team were certainly unhappy with the No. 9 of Gragson. Despite the incident, Gragson finished fourth after finishing eighth in Stage 1. However going forward, Snider will make it a lot tougher for Noah to pass them whenever those two are racing.

    5. Ryan Seig – As the race concluded, Ryan Seig and the No. 39 team was the story of the night after having a stellar run late in the going. The team finally started to show some progress in the second stage by finishing seventh, but really started to make some noise late. Sieg never got to lead any laps, though he was running inside the top five and as high as second at one point. Even with the reported vibration from Sieg’s car, they still managed to run inside the top five. After the final pit stop of the night for may teams, Sieg needed a late-race caution as he was the only that had a set of unused tires left. Unfortunately, the break never came and Sieg was left with a third-place finish. Still, this was a great run by a small team who are bound to do big things in 2020.

    Fell Out

    1. Myatt Snider- It was a forgettable night for Myatt Snider in Las Vegas. Snider was sent to the rear of the field after going to a back-up car after crashing in practice on Friday afternoon. There was some progress being made as he was able to finish 10th in Stage 2 and was starting to have a good race as the laps wound down. However Snider was caught up in a spin by Noah Gragson on the frontstretch. While this certainly didn’t take him out of the race, Snider was relegated to a 16th place finish.

    2. Timmy Hill – It was a rough outing for Timmy Hill and the No. 61 HRE team Sunday night. Hill finished 26th, five laps down.

    Chase Briscoe wins postponed Xfinity Series race at Las Vegas

    Chase Briscoe led 89 laps in his No. 98 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford to clinch the Xfinity Series Boyd Gaming 300 victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Sunday night. The race, originally scheduled for Saturday, was postponed to Sunday evening after only 50 laps were completed due to inclement weather.

    Briscoe won Stage 1 of the race Saturday but had had to wait until Sunday to seal the deal. It was a decisive win with Briscoe leading at the line by 2.874 seconds. It was his third career win in 52 Xfinity starts and his second top-five this season.

    Briscoe said that getting a race win early in the season would provide extra motivation for the team going forward.

    “Yeah, it’s so early, but definitely it’s nice to get a win early. I think obviously we were hoping that we could get a win at some point in the year, we expected to, but to get it before Phoenix is definitely nice just because we can go there and kind of try some stuff because I feel like that’s one place I need to get way better at. 

    “That being said, it’s nice to take the point lead. It doesn’t mean as much this early in the season like you said, but it’s a good confidence-booster for all the guys and it goes a long way when you’re that first garage stall with your guys and their work ethic and everything else. We knew that we could go win races, but to get one this early in the year I think it’ll go a long way, especially on this west coast swing. It’s hard to stay motivated and for us to win the first one that definitely goes a long way.”

    Austin Cindric led 39 laps and finished second in the Team Penske No. 22 Ford for his first top-five of the year.

    “It was definitely a track position sensitive race after the sun went down,” he said. “We knew it was gonna tighten up and tried to adjust for it on the final stop and didn’t get quite enough, and then obviously lost a little track position. I tried to hang it wide-open on Chase’s door, but track position is pretty important and then just fell off too tight following him there. It was pretty bottom dominant. It was really weird the track didn’t take any rubber today even in the Cup race. That was different than what I expected, but overall a great day for our MoneyLion Ford Mustang and we’ll try again next week at Fontana.”

    Ryan Sieg placed third in the No. 39 RSS Racing Chevrolet. JR Motorsports’ Noah Gragson overcame a penalty for speeding on pit road that sent him to the back of the field, to finish fourth in the No. 9 Chevrolet for his second top-five this season. Harrison Burton captured fifth place in the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and was the highest-finishing rookie.

    Brandon Jones, Michael Annett, Justin Allgaier (Stage 2 winner), Riley Herbst and Ross Chastain rounded out the top 10 at Las Vegas.

    Chase Briscoe is the series points leader by seven points over Noah Gragson.

    Next week the Xfinity Series travels to Auto Club Speedway for the Production Alliance Group 300.

    Las Vegas Xfinity race postponed to Sunday

    The NASCAR Xfinity Series Boyd Gaming 300 race has been postponed due to persistent rain Saturday. It will resume Sunday evening about one hour after the completion of the Cup Series Pennzoil 400 at approximately 7:30 p.m. on FS2.

    The race was red-flagged Saturday after Lap 50 of the scheduled 200 laps shortly after Chase Briscoe won Stage 1.

    Joe Graf Jr., in the Bobby Dotter No. 8 Chevy, did not pit and was scored as the race leader at the time of the red flag. Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe, after leading 27 laps, is currently in second place.

    Qualifying was rained out and the beginning of the race was delayed about 90 minutes due to rain. The lineup was set by owner points with Richard Childress Racing’s Myatt Snider on the pole. But after a crash during practice Friday the team made the decision to go to a backup car which sent Snider to the back of the field for the race start.

    Daniel Hemric was running in fourth place but on Lap 19 brought out the first caution when his car got loose and he made contact with the wall on the frontstretch. He was only able to complete 34 laps and is out of the race.

    NASCAR Xfinity Series Power Rankings- Daytona

    The NASCAR Xfinity Series kicked off their 2020 season opener at Daytona International Speedway on a bright sunny Saturday afternoon in central Florida. It was the first race of the season and it sure didn’t disappoint. Xfinity Series regular, Noah Gragson was finally able to pick up the first win of his Xfinity Series career, which more than likely will be the biggest of his young career. Though there were some other drivers who also had great runs. 

    Here is the first installment of this week’s Power Rankings for the NASCAR Xfinity Series following the NASCAR Racing Experience 300. 

    1. Noah Gragson – No surprise here as Gragson dominated the last 20 laps after the final pit stops. He lost the lead briefly to Chase Briscoe for five laps, but was able to take the lead back with two to go before a caution ended the race. The JR Motorsports driver started 12th, finished fourth and ninth in both stages respectively, en route to victory. He led just 15 laps but they were the most important 15 laps of his career.

    2. Chase Briscoe – Despite not having a teammate to work with, Briscoe was strong throughout the whole race, finishing 10th in both stages. The Indiana native only led five laps but remained consistent in the top five or 10. Briscoe had no issues and had a flawless race. Sure, he probably wished he could have finished second or won the race as he was in the lead but a top-five finish is still a solid day, especially at a place like Daytona where a big crash can take you out of a good finish late.

    3. Harrison Burton – While it’s not his first rodeo in the Xfinity Series, rookie Harrison Burton had a strong first outing at Daytona finishing second. There was a lot of hype with the Burton name having a presence Saturday afternoon and certainly, high expectations in the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. Burton was able to finish eighth in Stage 1 before missing out on some points in the second stage. He also led nine laps before the race ended. Had the race not ended under caution or if he had a teammate to work with, we most likely would have been talking about a different story right now. Still, not a bad finish for Burton in his first race at Daytona. It will be interesting to watch how Burton progresses throughout the year.

    4. Myatt Snider- New year, new ride for Myatt Snider who is racing part-time in the No. 21 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet. Even though Snider is a rookie in the Xfinity Series, this was not his first Daytona race as he has had previous starts in the Truck Series. The Charlotte, North Carolina racer looked like a seasoned veteran in this race. Snider started on the pole, led the first 13 laps and laps 15 to 23 before Jeb Burton took the stage win. Unfortunately, it would be the only laps led of the day as Snider was caught up in a Lap 61 accident which took him out of contention. The Richard Childress Racing driver wound up a disappointing 33rd place finish after a strong run early on.
    5. Timmy Hill – The underdog Timmy Hill came out of nowhere on the last lap, similar to what Jordan Anderson did on Friday night in the Truck Series race. The Maryland native finished third, earning his best career finish with the Carl Long owned No. 66 Toyota. Hill didn’t place in the top-10 in either stage but had the caution not ended and tandem drafting was allowed, Hill could have been the upset winner and a story we could have been talking about for ages.

    Noah Gragson captures first Xfinity Series win at Daytona

    Noah Gragson was in the right place at the right time and grabbed his first Xfinity Series win in the season-opening NASCAR Racing Experience 300 at Daytona International Speedway in the No. 9 JR Motorsports Chevy. He took the lead from Chase Briscoe on the final restart of the race and was scored as the winner when a caution came out on the last lap.

    The final restart came on Lap 118 of the 120-lap race as Gragson moved to the lead. A multi-car wreck in Turn 3 brought out the final race caution on Lap 120 and he was declared the winner, besting second-place Harrison Burton by 0.631 seconds.

    It was the 21-year-old’s first victory in the series in 37 starts but it was the seventh win at Daytona for car owner, JR Motorsports, who has now won three of the season-openers in a row.

    He thanked everyone who has helped him along the way, particularly team owner, Dale Earnhardt Jr.

    “Man, I’m speechless right now,” Gragson said. “I didn’t think this would come. But there’s so many people who made this possible for me, Dustin Ash back at home, the O’Hanley family, Jefferson Pitts Racing, Kyle Busch Motorsports, everybody who’s helped me get to this point. 

    “I spent a lot of time with Dale Jr. this week, talked to him for about two hours, and wanted to be a better speedway racer. He told me, go have fun; wreckers or checkers; you’ve got to manage your gaps, be there at the end, and just go lead the damn thing. That’s what we did.

    Joe Gibbs Racing’s Harrison Burton finished second in his debut race for the team.

    Although he conceded it was a great finish, he had hoped for more and credited his fallen friend, John Andretti, whose presence he felt during the race.

    “Not as great as it could have been, which is unfortunate,” Burton said. “There was a couple times where we almost got wrecked, and we kind of barely squeaked out of it, so I know I had John Andretti kind of over my shoulder watching me for that. That was really cool. There was a couple times this weekend in general where I blew a tire in practice and somehow didn’t wreck. Had a lot of help there from him.”

    Timmy Hill, who qualified for the upcoming Daytona 500 in the Bluegreen Vacations Duel 2, finished third, saying, “I just feel like this year is kicking off on a great note. Making the Daytona 500 on Thursday was awesome. I didn’t think it could get any better. Third place was a nice finish. I thought we could’ve had a shot at the win.”

    Brandon Jones and Chase Briscoe rounded out the top five as Justin Haley, Brandon Brown, Ray Black Jr., Ryan Sieg and Alex Labbe completed the top 10 finishers.

    Jeffrey Earnhardt reunites with JD Motorsports to compete in the NASCAR Xfinity Series

    GAFFNEY, SC – JD Motorsports with Gary Keller (JDM) is pleased to announce the return of Jeffrey Earnhardt to the driver lineup for the 2020 NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) season. The grandson of legendary driver and NASCAR Hall of Fame member Dale Earnhardt reunites with JDM after running a full season with the team in 2014.

    While racing for JDM full time, Earnhardt was able to capture seven Top 20 finishes, placing 18th in the final drivers’ points standings.

    Last season, Jeffrey Earnhardt proved that he is capable of running with the best, notching one Top 5 and three Top 10 finishes in just seven starts. With more races on his plate this season, he is expected to continue to shine on track.

    JDM & Earnhardt have 12 races on the schedule and are working on additional sponsorship to increase his opportunities to compete this season.

    The North Carolina native is eager to return behind the wheel, saying this, “I am really thankful to Johnny Davis and the JD Motorsports with Gary Keller team for having me on board this season. These guys work hard every week and they’ve demonstrated the ability and desire to compete. I am looking forward to getting back on track this season.”

    Though the NASCAR Xfinity Series season kicks off from Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, Feb. 15th, Jeffrey Earnhardt’s season kicks off at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 14th.
